connection bug on trisquel_9.0_amd64.iso (version of June 7, 2020) This post to notify you of an internet connection problem; when I indeed surf on the canvas after a certain time no more connection is possible, whatever the site visited: I am therefore obliged to disconnect / reconnect so that it works again (I thought that the problem originated from Technoethical N150 Mini Wi-Fi USB Adapter but by testing the dongle with PureOs I cannot reproduce the problem).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
So, this thread was meant to be an announcement for the ISOs published in December. I did ask for people to report issues with those ISOs here, but I didn't mean for all Trisquel 9 issues over the next 6 months to be dumped into this one thread. To anyone still experiencing an issue with Trisquel 9, I suggest opening a new thread about your specific issue. You will be more likely to have your issue seen by someone who can help, to receive a reply, and then to actually notice that someone has replied to you.

the same happen on my netbook eeepc 1001px whit atom processor... on the other laptop there is no problems
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
There's maybe something with Atom processors and their chipset, because in my HP mini (as stated earlier) the problem is the same and the CPU is intel Atom.

Hello, I have a problem on my Quest Slimbook plus 14.1 with all beta .iso of Trisquel Mini 9. The boot process can't show the login desktop. A few seconds after the boot process starts I get a black screen with the curser on the top left corner. on my netbook eeepc 1001 px the new trisquel mini 9 iso have the same problems of all the betas (when I select "Try trisquel mini" it hangs before loading a desktop environment with blinking cursor and no error message. Trisquel mini 8 runs fine on the same netbook) Trisquel Mini 8 dist-upgraded to 9 works very well, have only one small problem... in teh settings of PCManFM the single click to open file is lost after every reboot (and become double click to open file)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Hello, Tried trisquel mini 9.0. On HP-Mini 110, when I select "Try trisquel mini" it hangs before loading a desktop environment with blinking cursor and no error message. I tried the boot media on the other laptop and it boots fine, although it is with the damned ATI radeon chip, so screen resolution is very low. Strangely, on trisquel 8 the resolution is good, but I don't remember if I had to tamper with it somehow to fix the resolution and I think I had, but don't remember what exactly I did.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
A Wacom tablet (Wacom ONE) does not work with Trisquel 9. It seems that the file "xserver-xorg-input-wacom-hwe-18.04" is broken and cannot be fixed in Synaptic.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Thanks for your answer, I always use Trisquel Mini 9 on my netbook I think is the best o.s. to use and all is ok with Trisquel Mini 8, the version 9 probably have some bug... I upgrade from Mini 8 to Mini 9 some months ago I ask about the iso just for curiosity... maybe is time to made a new installation
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I think I installed from http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso-etiona/iso/20200421/trisquel-mini_9.0_amd64.iso Using the "graphical" installer because see first message in this thread. I haven't got a smartphone. If you cannot install Trisquel Mini on your Eeee PC, have you checked if you can install other distros (or use live systems), like Debian LXDE or Debian Xfce?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
This time, internet works even though I don't think I restarted!? I have no idea why. After waking up from suspend, I used logout and login AND Magic Banana's command, but it's possible it didn't even need all that, I failed to check. A nice surprise, anyway. I wonder if I can find some consistency. On the other hand, there are still so many things that don't work as I want. Locking doesn't lock, there's a widespread lack of navigation by letter keys (in Trisquel Mini LXDE's main menu and in many programs), a dearth of shortcuts (or shortcuts exist but aren't documented), a general dearth of documentation and explanation beyond what's already obvious from the UI (of the sort "To edit, select 'edit'. This lets you edit."), program features not working as advertised, system freezes. As with many things in life, upgrading to newer software often seems to be one step forward and one backward at the same time.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I found out that internet does work after waking from hibernation, so I can just hibernate more instead of suspending. Internet still doesn't work after waking from suspension. (Trisquel Mini, updated less than an hour ago) > One of the commands gave an error message, the other didn't. I forgot to copy it, will do next time. None gave an error message this time.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
> Executing 'systemctl restart networking' or 'systemctl restart NetworkManager' should be enough. Thanks. But no, neither of them did the trick. I tried both commands, first with "Enable Networking" checked and then in between unchecking and checking it, and waited for a few seconds after each try, and checked if the cable was plugged in; I'm using the same connection now, after rebooting, so I'm sure suspending and waking is to blame. It's always the same. One of the commands gave an error message, the other didn't. I forgot to copy it, will do next time.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Hello, I have a problem on my netbook eeepc 1001px with the latest 2 .iso of Trisquel Mini 9. the .iso can't show the Lxde desktop. During the plymouth I press f2 to read the verbose messages but they are fast to read. The Trisquel Mini 8.0.1.iso boot without problems. I have controlled the shasum256 numbers (the .iso's are o.k. and them boot on my others laptop) and I have used 2 different usb keys. And using Virtualbox I see in Trisquel Mini 9 there is both Calculator and Galculator. Thanks for your work Trisquel team, can't wait to see the new Trisquel 9 official versions
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
"Lock screen" on Mini doesn't do anything. No password prompt, no blank screen, no screensaver. This is an installation (so I have set a password) of Trisquel 9 Mini, using LXDE. Waking from suspend doesn't prompt for a password, either. I don't remember what it was like when waking from hibernation. Login, sudo etc. do ask for a password. Is there a command to lock the screen that I could try to check if that works? Thanks in advance.

Install alsa-utils if it is not installed already, and run $ alsamixer Press F6 and select your laptop's sound card. Make sure that the Master volume is unmuted and turned up. With your headphones unplugged, do the same with the Speaker volume. With your headphones plugged in, do the same for the Headphone volume. Then, run $ speaker-test and see if white noise plays. Try this both with and without headphones plugged in. Let me know the results and we'll take it from there.

I just tried to test qTox on my Etiona install and realized my sound hardware is not working at all. I tried watching a video using invidio.us, nothing I could do would give me sound. Suspend works, but after waking it back up, there is no internet connection and I cannot reconnect, so I have to restart (or just re-login? I forgot) to get internet again. Suspending can be useful to let the computer cool down in order to prevent emergency shutdowns from overheating. > There is a bug in the mate panel. When you add a program from the app menu to the bar, the window list disappears. Perhaps what you describe is similar to my earlier problems. Are you sure the window list actually disappeared? Perhaps it just got squished to 1 px size? I'd suggest you try unlocking things to move them back, that helped me. > In some apps eg IceDove the fonts are hard to read. What's good about Trisquel Mini 9 with LXDE is that you can switch off antialiasing (applied only after logging out and back in) and select a font with embedded bitmaps for crisp display, like "Unifont" which comes in one size, or "WenQuanYi Bitmap Song" (package "xfonts-wqy") at size 11, for example. What's bad is that some applications don't obey this setting and still antialias for the non-bitmap sizes. Likewise, many programs – usually those with uniform style, amnesia and poorly accessible, dumbed down menus like Evince, Calculator, Gucharmap – don't obey my widget style setting.

Since you explicitely allowed me, I might indeed dare to disagree about the alleged logical similarity between the two. The Amazon lens spyware was the very reason why I started to feel something was wrong with Ubuntu, and which pushed me to keep looking for more fitting alternatives. Please tell me if I am wrong about this, but from what I understand the sync option in Firefox/Abrowser does nothing unless you create and activate an account. What I meant by "turning it off" is getting rid of the related buttons and menu items that only clutter the interface since I am not using it, which I personnally do not find to be terribly hurtful. The very difference is whether anything happens before you have the opportunity to make a choice. Or to put it even more simply, sync is no spyware, YMMV. That said, I think we share the same reserves about using sync on a third-party server. > YMMV. Dude. That was a difficult one to get for the old man :D The first example I came by is: "I thought the shaving cream worked really well, but YMMV." Dude.

It would be better if a beginner, using Trisquel for the first time, could switch their Abrowser to using this community-hosted server by making a simple change in the GUI, either in Sync UI itself or somewhere in the Abrowser settings. It should be possible to add an item to about:preferences which provides a more beginner-friendly way to modify `identity.sync.tokenserver.uri`. However, translating the new menu item into every supported language would be non-trivial for us. Perhaps it would be worth a try for you to propose this feature to Mozilla.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Am I the only person who has this internet trouble on Trisquel 9? Mullvad seems to concern with this trouble so I sent them a log but since Icedove does not connect to the internet, I would not be able to read the reply, I think, though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
The above trouble might have been solved. Upgrade seems to be done. Those programs work now. Mullvad also seems to work. But it seems that all internet traffic is cut except of Tor Browser. Apt update, Abrowser, Icedove, Jami, etc do not get internet connection, neither with proxy nor direct (VPN). The internet speed is strangely fast.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I'm using a LibreBooted T400, and have just done a full system upgrade to 9.0... ...seems to boot slower - not a complaint, really, just an observation. No other issues discovered. I'm happy to report that everything else works right out of the box. Cheers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I just upgraded it to Etiona. Several functions/applications do not work (back up, appearance, network ploxy, etc). I have sometimes got some kind of notification that something called KVM conflicts with MATE, while upgrading too. Those are not serious problems for me, though.

Along similar lines, it would be great to have other frequently tweaked config applets available in the relevant menus. For example, perhaps the 'Network Connections' applet could be in 'Internet', and the Display or Screensaver applets in 'Graphics'. I think UI tweaks are probably going to have to wait until Trisquel 10, but I don't think this should be too hard. If I understand correctly, these menu entries already exist, and you just want them to appear in an additional location. Is that right? That's easier than create a new menu entry from scratch because we don't need to worry about translations. Speaking of the menu, for Trisquel 10 I am going to push for making [Brisk Menu][1] the new default. I wanted to do this for Trisquel 9, but until recently Brisk had a bug whereby it could not be fully navigated with the keyboard, making certain UI elements inaccessible to users who can't use a mouse. That bug was fixed recently, too late to make the change for Trisquel 9, but making it an option for Trisquel 10. I think it's a much better menu. > Again, as long as it's possible to choose a different Sync server in the Abrowser GUI, for me that's sufficient to address the network freedom issue. I'm looking at a Flidas system right now and the scrolling behavior seems to be what you are describing. I definitely did not intentionally change the scrolling speed. I can't find SyncThing there either. Both are available using sudo apt install from a terminal. This should be fixed before release. The problem is that Add/Remove Applications currently gets its application data from Ubuntu's [app-install-data][1] package (with non-free applications removed), which not only is missing Trisquel-specific packages like Abrowser, but also hasn't been updated since Ubuntu 15.10, so by now the application data does not very accurately reflect what is actually available in Trisquel's repositories. Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I ran the full-upgrade to Etiona from Flidas (keeping in mind this was a fresh install of Flidas). So far, it seems to be working fine. A few bits of feedback: Things I like: * Still loving the lightweight Mate desktop. It flies on Bishop (a decade old netbook with after-market SSD and 2GB RAM), yet still offers a reasonably full-featured UX. * language support seems to be fully installed by default, instead of asking me to add extra packages the first time I go into the Languages applet in the Control Panel. Same for Personal File Sharing. * the installer still finds my monitor and set it up flawlessly (as far I know ;) with no post-install tweaking required. * I can still ctrl-alt left and right to switch between workspaces, yay! * dragging (most) windows to the right or left of the screen still automatically docks them to that half of the screen. Yay! * Abrowser hasn't crashed on me yet, although I have yet to seriously stress test it. Things that could be improved on: * I can't see any kind of 'system information' in the Control Panel, or anywhere under system. Where do I find a list of my hardware (eg RAM detected, 32-bit vs. 64-bit etc)? * in Add/Remove programs, using the scroll buttons goes ridiculously slow, but using the mouse to push the scroll bars up and down goes ridiculously fast. Going up and down with the arrow buttons works more smoothly. * I can't find Jami in Add/Remove programs, not under that name, or under the old "Ring" name. I can't find SyncThing there either. Both are available using sudo apt install from a terminal. * I see both Eye of Mate and Viewnior under graphics, even though they both seem to do the same task. Isn't it redundant to have both? * I see there's no obvious passphrase manager. So users may still see the built-in password manager in Abrowser as being implicitly endorsed for storing website passwords. I already opened a thread to discuss this. * Transmission still doesn't dock to half the screen when I drag it against the left or right hand side. * The Sync feature in ABrowser still uses the Firefox branding. Does this even work? Does it use Mozilla's servers? Is this something we're comfortable with implicitly endorsing? * Goggle appears to be the default search engine in ABrowser. Wouldn't it be better to use something like DuckDuckGo or Ecosia or a Searx instance or something? * Would it be viable to run a Searx instance at search.trisquel.info to be the default search option in Abrowser? Or search.fsf.org, then it could be the default search in IceCat too. * I'm not convinced Pidgin is the best choice for default chat app. It's never recommended as an XMPP or IRC client by regular users of those networks. I don't think anyone who isn't a retro IM geek is still using any of the legacy nonfree networks it provides connections to. Menu Suggestions: * I've often though it would be useful to have 'About Trisquel' under 'System', giving the Trisquel version and a link to a page with more information about that version. The 'About Mate' pop-up could be triggered from a button on the 'About Trisquel' page. * The number of LibreOffice entries in the "Office" category in the start menu is overwhelming. Wouldn't it be better to have a single entry under "Office" for LibreOffice, which opens up a submenu containing its various tools? * The "Accessories" category in the start menu has a confusing number of items. It seems a bit unclear why some things are launched from there, some from "Other", and some from System. * Some of the items in "Accessories" arguably belong in "Office" (eg Plume, Atril, the calculator), in which there would be more room if you followed the suggestion above about LibreOffice. * I suggest reserving "Accessories" for things like Terminal, Caja, Engrampa, System Monitor, and Screenshot, that users use to carry out tasks, rather than to tweak the system. The rest probably belong somewhere under System (eg Character Map, Onboard, Passwords and Keys). * I would suggest replacing "Other" with a menu for "Accessibility", which can hold the Screen Magnifier, Orca screen reader, etc. That's more than enough for now. I'd do some more playing around tomorrow.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I just tried an install of 32-bit Etiona with the default Mate desktop, on Bishop, my decade old Acer Aspire One. Both the live session and the graphical failed, so I went for the test install, forgetting that this would install Flidas. Which it did. If anyone can remind me how to swap out the Flidas software sources for the Etiona ones, so I can try an upgrade, I would appreciate it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I checked that link again and found and downloaded a 32-bit ISO. I will have a go at making a boot USB ASAP and try a live session and a test install.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Might want to have that certificate updated
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I don't think they are final until they are announced at https://listas.trisquel.info/pipermail/trisquel-announce/ But thanks for bringing my attention to a new Trisquel Mini, I shall try it on a laptop prone to overheating due to either the case around the keyboard being slightly detached or a mismatching DC connector plug.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
*excited* So, are the new Iso's RC, Final ? I see there is the Trisquel-mini amongst others... Could someone let me know which Desktop Environment the Mini now uses ? Thanks !!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Hello, Thank you Connochaetes for your reminder. I downloaded and made a live USB from new testing Trisquel 9. Checked by md5 checksum. Now, I'm writting this from live testing session. Again spanish language is preinstalled but is not true. I had to deselect and select again to load the spanish language. Then I changed the keyboard layout and is working ok. Mate 1.20 looks cool ! Played default games: ok I Opened many programs at same time: ok I Opened many webpages in abrowser : ok To be continued..
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I don't see any ISOs here for 32-bit CPUs. Will Etiona not support 32-bit?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Hello Recently, I installed Trisquel 9.0 on my second x200. Everything works out-of-the-box. But I have some remarks: - abrowser is asking to update to version 74, but this is not done due to libnss3 (>= 2:3.47) but 2:3.35-2ubuntu2.7 should be installed, this isn't a great deal, but it is annoying to see 1 update everytime when I run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade - I also use nextcloud, but it isn't available. I assume it is because of this package qt5-webengine, is there a possibility to create a nextcloud-client version without qt5-webengine? (like Parabola did)[1] - also 3 missing plugin packages: webext-https-everywhere, webext-noscript, webext-ublock-origin. Are those going to be added? If not they can be added via abrowser extension tab. I also tried mini.iso, but that one didn't worked, when choosing the desktop environment, it keeps failing, without debug info. -- [1]: https://www.parabola.nu/packages/libre/x86_64/nextcloud-client/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Any update on what roadblocks are still preventing the release of Etiona? The Ubuntu base on Belenos has already hit EOL, and the base of Flidas is due to EOL next year. It's pretty crucial to get a stable Etiona release shipped well before that happens, to give users time to transition.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Connochaetes, thanks for the reminder. I uploaded the ISO and other files here. Unmodified but check the hash if you use the linked files. https://kaspian.kapsi.fi/trisquel/t9/ Or batch download with wget from the original location. wget -i t9.txt

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Following hints from an unrelated thread (1), I noticed that the output of 'xinput list-props' has very different entries on T8 and on T9. I thought I could simply use the same settings on T9 and T8 but because of this situation I am still somehow stuck in the middle of the touchpad settings. For now I have a choice between: 1. slow and somehow accurate and 2. fast enough but quite inaccurate nearby the target. I am not sure to be able to find a way to strike the right balance, so I wonder if there is a possibility to tweak it and come "back" to way the touchpad used to be managed in T8. Wow! I just typed reboot after full dist-upgrade and it rebooted back into my beautiful Mate environment with everything working again! I am happy! riseup installed fine but does not connect it close with error exit 1.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Ok. I put with echo into sources list all repos back and it showed some possible upgrade again. I started upgrade in hope to upgrade the mate desktop so that it fully apply. And after a night of upgrade it stuck and I had to press the switch button. Now when I try to boot the comp trisquel 9 demands login and password that I never had. This I see in grub: Trisquel GNU/Linux 9.0 [the name of PC] tty1 [the name of PC] login: and it waits. I never had any login anywhere. I don't know any login. What do I do?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I see a few problems: * All of the repositories are commented out. You need to remove the `# ` from the repositories you want to use, or they will be ignored. * `deb-src` lines are for downloading source packages. In order to be able to download and install binary packages, you need to change `deb-src` to `deb`. If you want to be to download both binaries *and* sources, then duplicate the lines and in the copied lines change `deb-src` to `deb`. * In the torproject line, you should probably change `xenial` to `bionic`, since Trisquel 9 is based on Ubuntu 18.04 bionic.

Okay, I was wrong. The [bionic repository][1] only includes packages for bitmask-vpn, not riseup-vpn. The [buster repository][2] does include riseup-vpn, so that's what you need. Note however, that there is only a 64-bit binary package for riseup-vpn. There is [no 32-bit package][3], so if you have a 32-bit system you're out of luck, unless you compile the program yourself. Thanks all! I successfully upgraded. Unfortunately riseup-vpn again does not install with the same mistake when installing from debian package as it did in trisquel 8: can't locate riseup-vpn. Mini 9 i386 works very fine. Wine, all mate environment utilities as in standard, icecat, tor browser, SQLite and libreoffice work very well, with as little as 2GB RAM. Thank developers for great job! Please never discontinue Mini and i386.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
The touchpad feels less precise on Trisquel 9 than on Trisquel 8 (to the same user on the same machine). I have noticed a (slight) difference in the mouse settings: on T8 the acceleration and sensivity settings were only available on the "General" tab while on T9 the two cursors are available in both the "General" and the "Touchpad" tabs. Maybe this is the reason why the same settings in the "General" tab do not feel the same on T8 and on T9. I have not managed yet to find the correct balance. Is there some work in progress on this configuration tool?

hello, I upgrade Trisquel Mini 8 to 9 changing the sources.list from flidas to etiona and all went well
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I trust that you backup your home directory before any upgrade, so a fresh install does not make much difference except being faster, easier and somehow cleaner. That is what I do and I find Trisquel to be particularly fast to install.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I decided to give the new Trisquel 9 graphical live system a spin, and found that the orca screen reader will not start. First, I tried waiting about 10 minutes after boot, thinking it might start in the manner to which I'm accustomed in Trisquel. When nothing seemed to happen, I ticked the volume controls on my keyboard, and heard the 'opop' sounds, thereby confirming that the audio system is working. I typed the orca command "/usr/bin/orca --setup" into the 'run' dialogue, and heard nothing. Next, I tested the tts system, and found that it's working. Finally, I opened a mate terminal and gave the command, "which orca", and got "/usr/bin/orca", which showed that the binary is in the proper place. I used the ocr feature in my smart phone to learn this. Finally, I ran orca from the terminal and heard errors regarding something called canbera being missing, and something about unable to start gtk dialog without a parent. Again, using my phone's ocr features and tts. BTW, this activity was all on bare metal. Thanks, -Dave H.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I cannot find the "Add software shortcut" on Trisquel 9 Application menu. Of course I can add software through the terminal or Synaptic, but that shorcut was quite helpful. Am I missing something?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Logged out, logged in, now both clocks show the correct time.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
On issue no. 24 (and possibly also related to issue no. 21 in this this post): Trisquel 9 has a clock in the panel by default, and you can add a different clock in any panel (open panel's context menu → Add to Panel…). Appending --timezone=Europe/Berlin before starting the live system does not seem to make any difference, both clocks will show UTC despite internet connection. In Trisquel's default clock, changing the time zone (click on clock with primary mouse button → Time & Date Settings…) does not affect the time shown by the clock, at least not when using a live ISO instead of installed Trisquel. Clock will still display UTC. In the separate clock which you can manually add, changing the time zone by changing the "location" (click on clock with either mouse button) does correctly change the time shown by the clock. I don't know if there are reasons to prefer the current default clock (for example, no leak of location because it does not fetch weather data?); if not, I would suggest making the other clock the default one.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
> TLDR: No, it looks like Debian doesn't handle my bad graphics card any > better. Nothing for Trisquel 9 to learn from Debian here. Sorry about that. AMD graphics cards are often a problem. I recently acquired four used laptops for quite cheap ($40 each). I take opportunities like this when the come up, so that I can install GNU/Linux on them and loan/give them to people who are interested in trying it out but not ready to mess with the software on their current machine. Unfortunately, two of these laptops have AMD GPUs, and because they are not fully supported by the free drivers, video playback is very laggy and choppy, giving the impression that the computer is slow when it is otherwise fine. Since the GPU is no longer sold by AMD, they no longer maintain their proprietary drivers, so even a user willing to compromise on freedom to better support their hardware does not have a choice to do so. This is why relying on freedom-hostile hardware is risky. > As you suggested, I wanted to use lspci to test Debian's recognition > of my graphics card, but the Terminal did not know that command, apt > knew no such package, and neither did Synaptic For future reference, when you are not sure which package provides a particular command, you can go to pacakges.ubuntu.com (or packages.debian.org in the case of Debian), and search by package contents for the name of the command. For example, searching for lspci on packages.debian.org reveals that the lspci command is provided by the "pciutils" pacakge. https://packages.debian.org/search?suite=buster=any=exactfilename=contents=lspci signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
TLDR: No, it looks like Debian doesn't handle my bad graphics card any better. Nothing for Trisquel 9 to learn from Debian here. I tried an Xfce-flavoured Debian live ISO, and apparently my graphics card, Debian and my monitor did not get along too well with each other. Screen resolution fell far behind the monitor's native resolution. If you are reading this on the Trisquel website (as opposed to the mailing list), see the screenshot. I have not shrunk the screenshot, what you see is the original resolution; it showed vertically stretched across my monitor's height, but did not match that horizontally, resulting in the globe logo losing its circular shape, for example. It was worse than any distro I've tried, including the three versions of Trisquel that I've used. As you suggested, I wanted to use lspci to test Debian's recognition of my graphics card, but the Terminal did not know that command, apt knew no such package, and neither did Synaptic; Synaptic did offer the usual plethora of installable packages. When I came back to the computer after a break of a couple of minutes, I think the screen was black and unresponsive, so I ended my experiment there. I hope the absence of lspci is not because I chose a wrong flavour of Debian. I had first tried the "standard" flavour which confronted me with a command line; I did not know what to do, and tried Xfce instead. I assume "standard" does not include a desktop environment.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
Flashed the ISO using the terminal method described in the documentation. When trying to boot into the "Try Trisquel without installing" option, I get presented with a blank screen and blinking underscore. Flashed the ISO twice to check whether this was an issue the first time around, but the issue persists. I suspect this might have something to do with section 3 here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/162075/my-computer-boots-to-a-black-screen-what-options-do-i-have-to-fix-it/162076#162076 The laptop is MacBook 2,1, so this has nothing to do with the nonexistent UEFI. Ready to investigate with further guidance!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Graphical ISO available for testing
I tried LiveCD session of Trisquel 9.0 amd64 and it works without problem for me. MATE desktop works as I want, internet works (from a USB mifi), browser works, file manager works & can access disk partitions just well, installing programs also works well from archive.trisquel.info server. My system is Intel Pentium 967 1.3GHz 4GB RAM with the bootable SanDisk usb flash drive 32GB. Thank you all Trisquel Developers! However, I didn't install that T9 yet. And I am really surprised to see Triskel, the KDE edition, is available. I have seen the manifest file and it says Plasma version 5.12 within. This is amazing.

That's the script that's supposed to launch compton on startup, and it appears to specify /etc/compton.conf as the config file unless ~/.config/compton.conf is present.[2] > 3. I tested torbrowser-launcher from the PPA and it works exactly as > expected with no issues. Okay, merging [3] will import the PPA's version to Trisquel. I will run it by quidam at the next meeting. > 4. Here is a bug report for this package in Ubuntu 18.04: > https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsdl2/+bug/1775067 Thanks. It looks like that issue was never resolved in Ubuntu, nor was it resolved upstream,[4] although a potential fix was discussed. It's not immediately clear to me how we could fix this on our end. I'd need to understand the issue better.
