Hi, Thanks for all the feedback on our work so far. We were glad to see that the use of brown was welcomed with some scepticism, we aren't sure about it, too! :) And even more, thanks for all the new contributions. Mr. doob—we love your work, please talk to us on the mailing list or on irc, wiki is not really a good place for discussions... Talking about new contributions, in particular ones that were based on our work—great job guys, it's really encouraging to see so much response. Few notes: - the current designs are bound with various technical limitations, in particular the gdm codebase, which only allows for theme changes without much flexibility (e.g. no transparency). Therefore (this time) we can't really go full on with crazy, innovative UI concepts. - we really want to maintain the impression of depth and spacious environment—something we felt was missing in mr.doob's work and some other contributions. Mr.doob (if you're reading this): please don't give up yet! :) So, enough babbling, this is the 3rd iteration. I like the color , makes me think of black-currant ice-cream , Yummy ;) But , I wonder how with 3 light sources , there are still dark spots in the room? [lower right and left] IMO, those dont have to be fully black. Glow on the logo seems over the top to me. Background/colors are smooth and harmonious now. Makes me think of wine. The flat color with no beveling on the dialogs still make them look like holes. Please consider to make the Cancel and Log in buttons bright on dark. Login options should not have Menus elsewhere come without. [ubuntu-art] Idea for Karmic GDM
Here is my opinion on the new boot plus an idea for the gdm: First, I really like mr.doob's iteration 3. For the GDM I would still like to see what I suggested before. For the GDM, when you click on the user, it should use the current background from that user. It should fade just like when you select a wallpaper for a user. If it were to fade in when the user was selected, I think it would help to make a smoother transition into a session. It would also give the illusion that you are already a step further to a ready desktop when you click/enter your username. People said it would take away from privacy. In that case, make an option in gnome-appearance-properties to make it public or not. Probably a checkbox underneath the style selection. If the box is checked, it will show during gdm, if not checked, it stays to whatever it was when no user was selected. I think this would put our login experience above others. If this is not possible, let me know and I'll stop suggesting it. But until then, I really want this to happen. [ubuntu-art] Hanso 0.3 Release
Hi all, Hanso has come along way since it's first iteration released in the beginning of April. I'd like to thank the many community members who have contributed their feedback and helped create what this evolved into, specifically mac_v, dilomo, and SiDi. Many of the ideas I was set against won me over in time with the insight of the artwork members. The initial inspiration for the theme was the Jaunty GDM and now with the advent of the new incredibly beautiful GDM in development for Karmic, I feel the integration is synergistic. Request for a mentor
Hi everyone, I just subscribed to this mailing list, I started programming in C, C++, MATLAB, Java, Python and now I am learning perl. I have a lot of interest in System Administration and fixing sound related bugs (this one because I don't know much about it, so I want to learn) I have been using Ubuntu for about 3 years and I have to say this is the best but like I said before I didn't know about this place, most of my work in in fixing wikis and others documentation tasks. [ubuntu-in] problems with .dmrc
Hello All Some time back I did ssh server installation and ftpd-ssl installation for my internal network and then found that $HOME/.dmrc was causing this message - "User's $HOME/.dmrc is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. User's $HOME directory must be owned by user and not writable by any other user." So when I try to change the permissions, it goes back to the same and I get the above message. Comment faire pour démarrer sur la clé USB? dans la liste des périphériques, seul apparaissent DD, CDRom, Réseau y'a t'il un moyen de mettre une ligne de code dans le menu.lst afin de choisir de démarrer de la clé USB? je voudrais valider si c'est possible de lui installer la version Netbook 9.04 d'Ubuntu. Faudrait remasteriser le CD afin qu'il inclut les drivers correspondants, c'est ps juste une ligne dans menu.lst... Normallement en installant un command line system (minimal) à partir d'un Ubuntu 9.04 alternate, puis ensuite le paquet ubuntu-netbook-remix, tu arriveras au même résultat. Hi, I can't understand why pulseaudio is standard soundserver under ubuntu. It has many a11y related problems: 1. Not acceptable latency 2. stability problems 3. need to install a complete desktop for working sound (no easy console setup). The mailinglists orca and gnome a11y contain many Messages about problems with pa. So folks go on and remove pulseaudio completely to bring as stability back. Always removing pulse or building espeak is not an ideal solution. Just me 2 cents. I'm sorry but I gotta say that's a bit naive. (but completely understandable) I have tried to involve the Studio community and even the wider Ubuntu community to no avail. Nobody is willing to really do what it takes and stick with it. Which also goes into my feeling that maintaining multiple themes is a bad idea. We get enough bug with the current one already. Here's what is needed from the position: * Define a new design direction or update our current one. * Create a single theme, wallpaper and if you're really ballsy, an icon set. (i've been trying to get someone to head up a off-shoot of Breathe: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/BreatheIconSet/UbuntuStudio) * Know the technicals of how these work together and on the system. * Know how to use BZR. * Be able to troubleshoot issues with the art packages. * Ability to communicate in a clear and timely manner. * Find new contributors for things like the website. Many thanks Guys, From what I can gather my problem more so lies from accepting the advice of the rep in the Vodafone shop this morning, who said noway - XP/Vista only. They have a bit of a deal on with their USB prepaid modem plans, to which I was hoping to take advantage of, and if it works (the USB modem) on Jaunty maybe go on a plan down the track. Judging from the info' replies from the list, it seems there's a fair possibility that the Vodafone product may be a go. I think I might just 'jump in the deep-end' on this one and see what happens. I would advice trying to get the make and model of the modem (which can be harder than it sounds as the guys at voda will likely only know it as the vodaphone prepaid modem) but hopefully it is printed on the box. Then do some research as to whether that model is supported by the linux kernel or has drivers available. Also look for some instructions re getting it working. I have some experience with a few 3g usb modems working for telstra and some will work out of the box and some need new drivers sometimes the drivers are not available yet. For instance it took sierra wireless about 2 months between releasing their 306 21mbps modem and them releasing linux drivers. Another trick is if you have one of these fancy modems that have windows software loaded on the device you will probably need to eject the internal memory on the device before it will function as a modem. Unfortunately I haven't come across any company telco or manufacturer that officially supports linux. That way they can get out of training staff to assist with technical support. However most have unofficial support such as sierra wireless writes drivers and zte help users on there forum. I have the iso from a mag but prefer to run teh dual boot option and keep teh xp on the side.. Can I somehow run the wubi and get it to use the magazine ubuntu I have? There are three options: 1. Put the .iso file into the same folder as the Wubi program, so it won't download it from the internet 2. Burn the .iso to a CD and run Wubi straight off the CD - it comes on the CD. 3. Best option: Burn the .iso to a CD, boot off it and tell the installer to resize your Windows partition and install Ubuntu in the free space, to make a real dual-boot. Wubi has a couple of massive drawbacks; firstly, you only get up to 30 gigabytes of space, and secondly if anything happens to Windows you will also lose your Ubuntu. If Windows crashes, it doesn't unmount its own partition cleanly, so Ubuntu won't be able to boot. You need to run chkdisk before Ubuntu will be able to work again. Even with the existence of Wubi, I still recommend a real dual-boot setup. In fact, it comes with a massive list of providers' settings, so when you plug in a supported 3G device it will ask you what provider you are with, and then will be able to connect immediately afterward. Much easier than Windows :-) I use a Haweuii E160G (I know I've spelt the manufacturer's name wrong) that Three provided me with - this is the standard Prepaid modem to my understanding. A friend of mine is on pay-as-you-go and has another Haweuii modem with a rotatable USB connector, that also works out-of-the-box on Jaunty but doesn't seem to be as good a modem. I've also seen someone with an Optus-branded E160G, so you can take a look at Optus and Three. Three have good pricing and generally a good signal and good speeds, although it's not a patch on my ADSL (I live in a mobile broadband slow patch as well actually). There are other modems around that work out-of-the-box on Jaunty, so just look up hardware compatibility lists. The modem is the important bit, not the provider - but stick with a mainstream provider otherwise you won't find their details in the Mobile Broadband Wizard. I hope this helps. So, anyway, I ended up buying the modem, and after reading a fair bit on various forums and Google searching etc I'm up to the stage of trying to connect. The modem itself is a Huawei K3520 (from Vodafone) and from what I've read it can work with a bit of perseverance using 'wvdial' (from a terminal window). I think my main prob' now is trying to determine the right config' for Australian settings in the wvdial.conf file. Oi André! Por que você não usa emacs? *risos* Brincadeira... Apesar de não trabalhar com octave trabalho com matlab mas não uso o gedit (estou no KDE e uso o emacs pra isso). Em outro post, achei uma pessoa dizendo que se ele abrir um arquivo, escolher Sintaxe Matlab (octave) e salvar, vai sempre funcionar - mas só praquele arquivo. Fazer isso pra todos os arquivos não deve ser fácil... A solução de uma das pessoas lá foi deletar a opção de sintaxe do Objective C do gedit - se você, como eu, JAMAIS for programar em C (risos), tenta isso... Se não funcionar, fala pra mim que eu testo por aqui e tento achar uma solução com você. Olá Joe tenho colegas que rodam o Ubuntu nesse laptop e funfa direitinho. Uso o XP em dual boot aqui em ksa por conta da minha VPN que é um pouco complicada de configurar então minha irmã pequena ainda usa o Windows (mandei um post pra lista pra tentar montar um script e deixar tudo automático... rsrsrs). Roda tudo tranquilo é só tomar cuidado na hora de instalar pra não apagar a partição com o Vista no teu caso. Bom fazer um teste com o Live CD pra ver se os drivers são todos reconhecidos, mas, como disse, acredito que não terá problemas. Quanto ao teu outro laptop com chipset SIS, ontem mesmo aqui na lista discutimos que essa SIS não funfa direito, principalmente os efeitos 3D, enfim é só dar uma olhada nos arquivos da lista. Povo tentei executar pelo terminal e nada, mesmo com a dica do Adorilson. Normalmente antes de dar os comandos no terminal, entro logo como root, através do comando su. Penso que pode ter algo a ver com o intervalo entre um comando e outro, enfim não sei. Volto a pedir ajuda porque minha irmã pequena (6 anos) que prefere o Ubuntu...rsrs (diz que é mais fácil de usar) não consegue ainda ir ao terminal e dar esses comandos todos, sem falar q como root ela pode bagunçar minha máquina... então quando ela quer acessar a net e eu não tô em ksa, volta pro xp. Para deixar o note pronto pro dual boot, vc não precisa fazer nada nesse sentido. Eh só instalar o sistema e tomar cuidado para não formatar a partiçao do Vista. Eu sugiro escolher, durante a instalação, a opção de realizar o particionamento manualmente e criar 3 partições: 1 para swap, 1 para o diretório raiz (/) e 1 para o diretório /home. O swap deixa com a qtd de memória RAM do seu note. O /, deixa com uns 8gb. O /home fica com a qtd que vc achar necessária para suas musicas, videos, documentos etc. Após a instalação, ao reiniciar o micro, o menu do grub aparecerá dando como opção escolher o Linux ou o Windows para bootar. Olha não sei se existe como fazer exatamente o que vc tá querendo. Mas uma boa era usar o Remastersys para criar um live cd do teu sistema e colocar no novo hd. Salvo engano ele tem a opção de incluir a partição /home. Espero ter ajudado!! Quando for fazer uma instalação em dual boot eu sempre aconselho que vc deve instalar tudo. Primeiro o windows, usando o disco completo. Já fiz esta experiência diversas vezes. No meu desktop tenho windows e ubuntu 9.04 e não tem nunhum problema. Dê o boot para entrar no ubuntu. A primeira coisa é escolher a configuração do teclado. Somente para testar, o Ubuntu vc pode escolher testar o ubuntu sem nenhuma mudança no computador. Se vc já decidiu realmente instalá-lo siga os passos em: http://ubuntued.info/2008/01/instalar-o-ubuntu-em-dual-boot-com-o-vista.html E se for o XP não dá nenhum problema. Quando iniciar a instalação escolha fazer a partição manualmente. Lá vc deverá particionar o disco escolhendo uma para swap e outra onde deverá ficar o linux. Eu usava o Evolution, depois migrei para o Kmail. Eu gostava bastante do Evolution. Mas vou te dizer, depois que conheci o webmail do gmail, nunca mais usei nenhum gerenciador de email, fiz dele um gerenciador, pois ele tem um recurso de receber e enviar email de outras conta atraves de endereços pop e smtp, como faz o outlook/evolution. Então eu não me preocupo mais em backupear meus emails, tudo fica no gmail, tenho agenda, gtalk, guardo meus documentos do office no google.docs e melhor, consigo acessar de onde estiver.. Acredito que a tendência é aos poucos a computação ser totalmente voltada para browser então porque você não experimenta os recursos do gmail, tem muita coisa, o compartilhamento de agenda e de documentos é bem legal, usamos aqui na empresa... Realmente muito melhor que ficar guardando email nos clientes e na maquina local, que pode ocorrer de apagar e perder tudo ou dar um pau no hd... Inicia um LiveCD Abre o terminal Loga como root $ sudo su Faz a cópia do CD inteiro # dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb onde /dev/sda é o HD de origem e /dev/sdb é o HD de destino. Como este é maior, vai copiar. Depois retira o HD de origem e guarda Ajusta o strap do HD de destino para ele ser o master. Boot no HD novo e vê se tá tudo bem Depois, provavelmente vais querer aumentar alguma partição do HD novo para ele casar com o tamanho novo. Neste caso: Inicia o LiveCD Inicia o GParted (Gerenciador de Partições) Aumenta a partição que tu quizeres. Talvez tenhas que mover partição, etc. Não precisa fazer backup porque o teu HD de origem tá íntegro e guardado - já é o teu backup: se algo der errado, podes usá-lo para recuperar os dados. Se o teu PC for um note, que não tem como inserir um outro HD no mesmo barramento, então vais ter que copiar para um HD externo e desde para o novo HD - dá mais trabalho, mas é fácil. Boot sempre pelo LiveCD ou LiveUSB. Neste caso gerar um RemasterSys talvez seja melhor, mas isso vai depender da quantidade de dados que tu tenhas. Pelo que eu saiba o RemasterSys não faz múltiplos volumes, logo, tudo tem que caber em, no máximo 4,7G o que normalmente é pouco. Provavelmente você vai gastar mais tempo trocando os HDs e esperando a cópia do que digitando ou clicando nos comandos -- André Cavalcante Porto Alegre, RS. Para deixar o note pronto pro dual boot, vc não precisa fazer nada nesse sentido. Eh só instalar o sistema e tomar cuidado para não formatar a partiçao do Vista. Eu sugiro escolher, durante a instalação, a opção de realizar o particionamento manualmente e criar 3 partições: 1 para swap, 1 para o diretório raiz (/) e 1 para o diretório /home. Só uma susgestão para Dual-Boot. Na instalação, dentro do particionamento manual, podes apontar diretamente a partição windows (e.g. /dev/hda1 ou /dev/sda1) para uma pasta do sistema (e.g /windows), assim sempre que tu iniciares o sistema vais poder ver os teus arquivos do windows. Se estás pensando em compartilhar dados, cria uma outra partição e formata como FAT. Podes também mapeá-la no próprio particionador do instalador para uma pasta do sistema (e.g. /common ou /comum). Se ficar partições demais, podes deixar como primária somente a do windows e a / do linux, as demais, do linux, podes por em uma extendida. Fica mais ou menos assim o esquema de particionamento: /dev/sda1ntfs /windows - não formatar /dev/sda2ext4/ - formatar (o sistema vai para cá) /dev/sda3extendida /dev/sda5swap - formatar 3,5G /dev/sda6ext4 /home- formatar (teus dados vão para cá) /dev/sda7fat32 /comum - formatar (ou no linux ou no windows, tanto faz, sugiro uns 10G, dá dois DVDs de compartilhamento) O swap deixa com a qtd de memória RAM do seu note. O /, deixa com uns 8gb. O /home fica com a qtd que vc achar necessária para suas musicas, videos, documentos etc. Como você tem bastante RAM é improvável que vá fazer uso de swap, mas é sempre bom ter algum. Neste caso, como se trata de um note e, eventualmente você vai querer hibernar, sugiro que use 3,5G para o swap, isto é, 3G da RAM + 512M para o swap propriamente falando, isto porque o linux, até onde eu saiba armazena todo o estado da RAM no swap na hibernação (ao menos era assim a umas boas versões do kernel atrás). Após a instalação, ao reiniciar o micro, o menu do grub aparecerá dando como opção escolher o Linux ou o Windows para bootar. Abs, Joe Só como alternativa ao dual-boot, sugiro você dá uma pesquisada em virtualização. De repente você não precisa instalar o linux em partição separada, mas como uma máquina virtual dentro do Windows, ou virce-versa. Para virtualização deste tipo, até agora o que eu achei melhor foi o VirtualBox. Sempre utilizei clientes e faço backups constantes, tenho todos meus mails comerciais e particulares significativos, recebidos e enviados, em backups desde 1999 até então: não os deixo no cliente de mail, salvo-os em arquivos. A empresa que hospeda meu site comercial bem como os mails teve uma pane geral em 2001, se não me falha a memória, e perdeu mais de 70% do conteúdo hospedado... o meu foi um deles. Graças à esta manutenção de backups, nada perdi e fui o primeiro a recolocar o site no ar... a maioria dos clientes sequer tinha backup de seus sites. Isso é estranho, nunca ouvi falar de perda de mails em nenhum cliente, salvo por descuido do usuário. De qualquer forma, o Evolution tem um excelente backup. Estava querendo inovar... Ao tentar fazer ocr de um documento escaneado, usando o Tesseract, notei que nunca obtinha resultados. Gastei umas boas duas horas lendo a documentação do programa no site oficial e descobri que ele depende de uma biblioteca chamada libleptonica. Acontece que esta lib, mesmo estando empacotada pelo Ubuntu, não é dependência do Tesseract! Imagino que esse seja um erro de empacotamento comparável a um pacote do GIMP que não depende do GTK. Como se trata de um pacote mantido pela comunidade (universe) e como eu não tenho conta do launchpad (já tenho contas demais na web, gostaria de não ter que criar mais... rsrs), gostaria de pedir a algum membro da lista que registre este bug. Em tempo, acabei compilando e instalando manualmente tanto a libleptonica quanto o tesseract (versão mais atual). Graças ao Paco isso não vai ferrar meu sistema. Recomendo FORTEMENTE o tesseract para quem quiser fazer OCR. Mesmo com uma xerox de má qualidade ele conseguiu mais de 80% de acerto no reconhecimento. Sendo assim, aqui vai mais uma pergunta de iniciante: Tenho um laptop acer aspire 4530 - AMD Athlon X2, 03 Giga de Ram, Placa de vídeo GeForce 9100G que atualmente roda com Windows Vista (trabalho com softwares de cenários prospectivos que não rodam no Linux), este é o meu laptop de trabalho no dia a dia, gostaria de instalar o Ubunto 9.04 nele para um dual boot. É seguro? Como fazer(já baixei o cd do ubuntu e instalei em outro laptop mais antigo que tenho)? Vou conseguir configurar a placa de vídeo (no outro laptop a placa de vídeo é uma SIS e não configura os efeitos ne que a vaca tussa!!)? Se alguem puder me ajudar, desde já agradeço a paciência. Abs, Joe Só como alternativa ao dual-boot, sugiro você dá uma pesquisada em virtualização. De repente você não precisa instalar o linux em partição separada, mas como uma máquina virtual dentro do Windows, ou virce-versa. Para virtualização deste tipo, até agora o que eu achei melhor foi o VirtualBox. Olá galera, Estou tentando instalar um software estatistico, o R, no UBUNTU, já tentei varias maneiras a instalação e não consegui. Estou desconfiado por meu ubuntu ser 9.04 ainda não existe atualizações com o R, pois antes no 8.04 eu consegui fazer a instalação. Nos links que vc mandou está a explicação de como vc deve proceder. Abra seu arquivo /etc/apt/sources.list e adicione a linha com o repositório do R para Ubuntu. Por exemplo deb http://cran-r.c3sl.ufpr.br/bin/linux/ubuntu jaunty/ (exatamente dessa forma). Para obter as chaves públicas gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv-key E2A11821 gpg -a --export E2A11821 | sudo apt-key add - sudo apt-key add key.txt Depois é só fazer sudo apt-get update e sudo apt-get install r-base r-base-core e vc terá a última versão (2.9.1) instalada. Oh Fernando, Eu fiz exatamente como vc mi instrui, mas quando digito no terminal: sudo apt-key add key.txt aparece esse erro: gpg: impossível abrir `key.txt': Arquivo ou diretório inexistente O que significa? Essa ultima parte é só para adicionar a chave de segurança do repositório. Nao vai afetar em nada a instalação do R. O único inconveniente é que sempre que vc fizer sudo apt-get update deve aparecer uma mensagem no final te alertando que essa chave não foi encontrada. Também não sei te dizer porquê a chave não foi encontrada, mas isso não será problema... Se quer inovar, experimente o KMail... mas sinceramente não gostei, é fresco demais para o meu gosto. Concordo plenamente com o Salles. O Kmail é um show, pelo menos para as necessidades que tenho. Tentei o Evolution mas não me adaptei. Gostei muito do Gnome nas duas vezes que tentei migrar para ele, mas onde trabalho, e sou reponsável pela área de TI só usam KDE. Confesso que é culpa minha, pois é herança do tempo que trabalhei na Conectiva. Também tem o K3B, K9Copy, digiKam e Amarok que são vícios antigos e uso muito o que me fazem por fim ficar no KDE. Pena que o Kubuntu não tem a comunidade que o Ubuntu, por isso tenho que me virar quase que sozinho por vezes. Mas não abandono a distro (K)Ubuntu e por isso sigo essa lista, aqui aprendo muito do sistema como um todo. Olá rapaziada, alguem teria dica de algum soft pra criar música? lembro que num tempo remoto na época do windows 98 havia um tal de acd-see, mas não encontro mais ele.
