OOo makes available all the fonts installed in the operating system's

Thank you Gene. The OP should know that even _related_ subjects are
_different_ subjects. If it is different enough to change the subject
line, then it is different enough to start a new thread. Replying to
the old thread with a new title is not the same as starting a new
thread. Presumably, the OP does not use a threading email client.

Incorrect.

Due to the way that mail programs thread subjects, changing the subject
line just intermingles the subjects into one thread.

The rule of thumb is:

New question

Do not hijack someone else's thread, even with a change of subject line.

That would have been me :-)

It doesn't surprise me that you couldn't open the resulting PDF, either.
If you had actually followed through and perhaps clicked on any of the
links I had provided you may have gained a clue as to why that would not
be possible.

I am also a firm believer in that once a subject changes from the

For me, this has been a little learning curve. i.e. I don't as-a-rule
set forms and save them to PDF.

But looking at setting forms and saving to PDF I would say that you have
struck a bug in OOo (I'm using version 3.01 for PPC)

That is: *you said* in an earlier post...

Now for me, on a PPC Mac using OOo 3.0.1, if I set a sans serif font in
a form - e.g. "Courier", on saving the file to PDF, the font defaults to
"Helvetica" (PPC Mac equivalent to "Arial"). But if I set the font to a
serif "Times New Roman", not a problem, the resulting PDF display Times
New Roman, as the font to use in the form.

I haven't looked for an issue on this -- it's a minor annoyance that I
figured was a result of my being too lazy to look into the SRB. As

Hello Joe,

Could you be a bit more specific as to what font you want to change.

For example the Base menus an such are, as are most of the OO.o UI, not
alterable form anywhere within the Options window. ( You can change the
HTML and Basic IDE fonts there however - and select between OS or OO.o
supplied fonts).

If you mean for instance that you want to change the fonts used in a
data grid - then yes they can be changed.

Open a dataview window.
( Open a Table object, execute a Query Definition, a grid on a form)
Move the mouse to the upper left corner of the table grid - the small
cell that has neither a column name, nor row number.
Right click and on the context menu select "Table Format"
Now you can set the font for all the cells in the table.

You CANNOT change the font for individual columns or cells.

You can change the alignment and formatting for data in individual
cells. Again your right click on the column header and select "Column
Format".

Now in the case of the DataView window these changes should be permanent
- but it appears that under Windows using the latest 3.0.1 RC1 release
this is lost when the database is closed. Under Linux is appears to be
working properly.

If you are talking about changing the font in some other part of the
Base UI - standard form controls or reports let me know and I'll try to
help there also.

Merry Christmas

I'm pretty sure that the fonts option in the general settings works
across the board. Just go Tools->Options, under openoffice.org you have
the fonts option. I'm not sure if it's exactly the same in 3.0 as I have
2.4.2, also it has been a while since I've played around with base, but
if memory serves me correctly the fonts option controls the font for all

I am dismayed to find that OOo 3.0 still cannot see OpenType fonts that
are based on Type 1 fonts.

I also note that when you save a form as an editable PDF, whatever font
you selected for the controls is converted to Helvetica in the PDF. I
complained about this two years ago. (Although I can't find the place
where I filed it.) I need to use a specific font in the controls for
work in linguistics. Helvetica has only a handful of the characters we
need. Evidently this has not been addressed.

Can someone confirm that 3.0 still cannot use all OpenType fonts and
that form controls will be set to Helvetica on PDF export? Or if there
is a way to do it, please advise how.

And just to include another reply to my own question (about Arial Narrow),
there is a font edit software included in one of the repositories of Ubuntu.
It's quite some work, but fully possible to edit the Arial font with it,
making each character narrower and save it as Arial Narrow... But I guess
it's just too much work to changing all the thousands of characters, but
maybe the most commonly used, such as a-z, A-Z, åäö, ÅÄÖ, üÜ, 0-9 can be
done without too much of an effort.

But still, finding a proper font by searching for it might be a faster
alternative.

Re: [users] Fonts

2007-11-10 Thread Henning von Roeder
Hi,

I am running Ubuntu Gutsy. I hope that this will be similar to Ubuntu Feisty.
Find the Fonts that you would like to install. Then find your fonts
directory. In Ubuntu Gutsy
it is /usr/share/fonts . Now make a new folder (I named mine
ttf-myfonts)(very imaginative).
Now take all these fonts that you want to install and put them in this
directory. OpenOffice should now recognize these fonts. Try it, you
can;t loose anything.

[users] Fonts

2007-11-09 Thread Linda L. Hull.
I have been using Open Office for a while now, but
I have never figured out how to get English fonts
into the box at the top of the page (or even into
the other list that I get with right click)?

I don't really have a lot of use for ae_Sharjah,
Baekmuk Gulim, or AR PL SanHeiSun Uni.

It seems with each upgrade I get more fonts in
other languages and fewer in English.

I would like things like Aral Bold, Times New Roman
and Schoolbook.

How do I get these?

I'm running Ubuntu Feisty, and prefer command line.

I am an adult with learning disabilities, and need
step by step instructions, not man pages.

2007-10-09 Thread Jim Hartley
I hate to contradict someone, but Bookman and Poor Richard **DO NOT**
always come with the default installation. I don't have either one (nor
Papyrus, either). I originally had OO 2.04 Red Hat Fedora Core 6 edition
(installed of course on FC6), then I upgraded to OO 2.3 "standard"
edition. I have lots of "IP unencumbered" fonts that came with FC6, and
some real weird stuff I downloaded from here and there, but none of the
three that are being requested.

I don't think OO actually installs **ANY** fonts. What you see are the
defaults that come with your operating system - Windows will have one
set, and Linux will have a different set. Actually different sets for
different Linux distros, depending on how purist the distro is being
about patents, copyrights, and other IP on the various fonts.

If you want some more fonts, it's up to you to find them, download them,
and install them.

Fonts are installed by the Operating System; OO just uses what you have
installed (appropriate to your OS - Linux, Windows, etc.). Download
those fonts wherever you can get them and follow your OS's directions
for installing them. ".ttf" font files work for both Windows and Linux.

If you added it correctly to the Windoze Fonts folder using Control

close OO AND any quickstart for it, or reboot Windoze. Then just look in

They are available from SuSE. Use YaST to install them from the
installaiton media. The MSFT fonts should have been on them. It is
better in Linux to use the RPMs available for your distro.

I've downloaded some of them and use them without any problem with OOo.

The fonts can not be legally distributed in any form other than the one that
they were initially released in, i.e. Microsoft CAB files.

You can download the original CAB files and use cabextract to retrieve the ttf
files.

No, that is a page to get a kit to make an RPM package that can download

It is worth noting that the fonts you mention here are just standard ttf fonts,
so they will work with any OS that uses that kind of font, not just Linux.

Hi All

My system is Debian Etch 4.0 with xorg 7.1 , xfs and xfs-tt (truetype)

So far my testing shows that openoffice 2.1.0 recongises most of the
Type1, Type3 and TTF fonts provided by the xfs and xfs-tt servers.
Openoffice 2.2.0 and 2.2.1 do not.

does anyone know how to force/make openoffice 2.2.1 or 2.2.0 to
recongise all the system wide fonts provided by the xorg X-windows
system the same way that Openoofice 2.1.0 does?

Was there a major change in the way fonts are read/used by openoffice
suite between versions 2.1.x and 2.2.x?

old document, all the devanagari symbols are replaced by little squares.

my questions:
1) what do i need to do the use the devanagri script again??
2) do i need to set up OOo in such a way that it does NOT use mac
system fonts for this purpose? (even though the devanagri script is
part of the mac system)
3) if the second question is answered with yes, then how can i
accomplish this task?

many thanks for the help!

The Monotype Corsiva is listed in OpenOffice.org on my computer...
You can add fonts by using the Wizard/Assistant: File > Wizard/Assistant >
Add new fonts from the web.
A Google search might provide places where you can download from (for free,

Hello,

I'm new to OpenOffice. I've just installed the program, but opted to
not "convert" System/open fonts for use in OpenOffice. Is there a way
to access this option to do it once the application has been
installed?

Since there was no information available about what this option was
for or how it really works, I figured it was safer to bypass it. Now,
however, none of my activated fonts are available to use (I manage
all fonts via Suitcase, and exercise extreme caution when an
application wants to take over handling typefaces).

The conversion converts some types of fonts and makes some other
types available to OpenOffice.org. The original fonts are not
modified at all. They are only read or copied from their original
location.

The converted fonts are made available in the folders:
/Applications/OpenOffice.org 2.1.app/Contents/MacOS/share/fonts/truetype
~/Library/Application Support/OpenOffice.org 2.1/user/fonts/

Inside these folders, you will find a text file with "fondu" in it's
name. Deleting these files will allow you to re-run the font
conversion, if like yourself you declined it the first time, or if
you add some more fonts. After deleting these empty text files, start
OpenOffice.org again.

I hope this answers your questions.

Shaun

Hi, Shaun (and James, too),

Thank you. This allowed me to run the conversion which I opted out of
the first time.

I may have a bigger issue than this, though. No system fonts (or any
fonts activated by Suitcase) are available after doing this. I see
mention of "truetype" in the "Contents" within the application, and
since I use only Postscript and OpenType fonts, I'm guessing nothing
was copied or converted.

I also found that there is an updated version of X11 available on the
Apple website, which I'm now downloading. perhaps this will solve the
problem.

Many thanks for your time in replying to my query.

Apparently, Ubuntu Edgy has removed this particular part of OOo.
So, you might want to ask Ubuntu why this functionality does not
exist in their version of OOo. It does exist in the Linux version of
OOo on the OOo web site which is RPM based.

Hi. You can alter the size with Tools >Options >OOo >View : User Interface
: Scaling.

On the same screen de-select "Use system font for user interface". Move to
>Fonts in the same list as >View, then insert Andale Sans UI as the font to
be replaced, choose the replacement font, add it to the table and select
"Apply replacement table". Those settings give the best results on the
Linux OSs I have used.

instead of Windows?

Thanks.

OpenOffice.org (OOo) has a wizard for adding fonts. File >
Wizards > Install fonts from the Web.
This probably requires JRE (Java Runtime Environment) which is
available from www.java.com. If you do not have this program,
download and install it. Then open OOo. Use Tools > Options >
OpenOffice.org > Java to allow OOo to find where the JRE is located.
Once it is located and listed in the window, click OK. Close OOo and
the Quickstarter in the System tray. (The icon with a blue and gray
background and three birds flying in it.)

OpenOffice offers. Scrap booking is my main hobby, with two small children

I had this problem too. ( Fedora ) OOo *used* to keep its fonts
separate, once I figured this out I just copied from the system
directory to OOo's. It may be that KDE and Gnome are doing better at

2006-11-09 Thread Olive

Hello,

I have some questions about fonts in openoffice (openoffice 2.0.4 on Linux).

I have installed the standard postscript fonts. On my platform (as in
most opensource platforms); these fonts are named "Nimbus Roman", etc...
Is there a way to change the name of the fonts as seen from openoffice,
so that these fonts appears under the traditional postscript font names
(i.e. Times, helvetica, etc...).

I have installed fonts destinated to render mathematics in application
supporting Mathml (these fonts are used by firefox and abiword). I would
like to disable these fonts in openoffice since they are not useful for
ordinary typesetting, is it possible?

What do you mean? That other applications offer you a greater
font selection?

I have the impression that OOo uses only scalable fonts and under
windows this is likely to mean only true type fonts.

Hi John

One place you can get it from is here:
http://www.fonts.com/FindFonts/detail.htm?pid=205652

It is a commercial Adobe font, and so is not free. You probably want the
Windows Truetype version.

If you used the word "need" loosely, and only need a font "like" that one,
then you can look for similar free fonts on some other sites.

A few sites I would recommend are:

http://www.getfreefonts.info/

Not much of a Mac user, I run linux, but most modern fonts have the
symbols you mention included. Try "Insert, Symbol" from the menu.
Superscript and Subscript are attributes of the characters. Try "Format,
Character". Try also downloading and reading the free manual from the
website.

Font availability on the Mac is something i am totally unaware of, thus
cannot help with.

The paid for version is called Star Office. It does include some
additional add ons. I do not know if it comes in a version for the
Mac. Please be aware that the Mac in all its various expensive
incarnations is also [EMAIL PROTECTED] PC, as PC just means Personal Computer.

Re: [users] Fonts

2006-06-15 Thread Adrian Try

Hi Leslie

GreetingsCongratulations on a really good word processor. I have a question

about the limited font availability on the MAC version. We are using an
older MAC MINI that does not have the new processor. The program works well
and has a number of features such as the page borders that other word
processors for the MAC do not have. The question we have is: Is there any
way to access a font list that has the math symbols such as the degree
symbol, superscript and subscript? Is there another version of openoffice
that is offered for sale? I believe I saw it somewhere but have not been
able to find it and if it does exist, does it have additional capabilities
such as those I have mentioned. We have a copy of openoffice on a [EMAIL
PROTECTED] PC
sort of running on XP professional but we use the MAC systems for all
important work such as scientific papers and legal documentation. Any
information you may be able to offer would be appreciated. All the
best,Les. Matthews

You can insert degree symbols etc by clicking on Insert / Special Character
from the menu.

Subscript and superscript are available from Format / Character / Position.

If you have more advanced mathematical formatting needs, you can use the
equation editor by selecting Insert / Object / Formula from the menu.

You shouldn't need a special font to do any of these.

Hope this helps.

Adrian

You can still manually add paragraph borders after turning off the
automatic "Apply borders" feature. These are paragraph borders.

Just insert a blank paragraph, move the text cursor to it and use Format
- Paragraph - Borders.
