[Videolib] Retirement ~ Retunement ~ Farewell
Dear friends on Videolib, It is with great joy and a measure of sadness that I write to say farewell to my friends and colleagues. On October 1st I completed twenty-nine years with Bullfrog Films, through four format shifts (from 16mm to VHS to DVD to streaming). At the National Media Market in Baltimore I shared my news in person with attendees, and celebrated my retirement with cake and music in the Bullfrog Films suite. Under a full moon, moving towards the Winter Solstice, I see my path to lay it all down. Thanks to all of you who have worked with me and Bullfrog Films all these years. I am grateful for your support and encouragement. One of my favorite jokes (I'll tell you another time) has a great punchline: "Ist es nicht wunderbar dass wir doch zusammen gekommen sind!" Isn't it wonderful that we got together! With love and gratitude, Elizabeth Elizabeth Stanley BULLFROG FILMS P.O. Re: [Videolib] Suggestions: films with themes of university level int'l students in the US or US students studying abroad
Dear Videolib friends, Bullfrog Films suggests a short film called “Translation Possible” that may spark discussion among both international students in the US, and US students studying abroad—both groups having to adjust to new surroundings! Here is the link to the description page and trailer: http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/trans.html Translation Possible (DVD, 2007, 11 minutes) Using a simple filmic device, this film illustrates the disorientation we all feel on encountering a new culture, and the way we gradually learn to fit in. A European tourist arrives in Shanghai, and finds herself totally disoriented in a different culture. In “Translation Possible” we see the process of overcoming cultural and language barriers rendered in a surprising way, illustrated visually, without words. We marvel at the filmmaker's clever technique that so effectively illustrates people out-of-sync with their surroundings. It is sympathetic and instructive both to the person who finds themselves in a new situation that seems incoherent, and to a person who wants to help someone seemingly overwhelmed by their new environment. Re: [Videolib] need a change from the daily grind...i need help!
Hi, Rhonda, Great questions! We've come up with a list of titles from Bullfrog Films that may be interesting to the faculty who made this request. The True Cost http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/true.html Groundbreaking investigation of fast fashion reveals that while the price of clothing has been decreasing for decades the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. Human Terrain: War Becomes Academic http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/humt.html Examines and questions the US military's new counterinsurgency initiative, 'Human Terrain Systems', under which social scientists are embedded with combat troops. Life Apps http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/la.html Part of the "Reframing Rio" Series, this 5-part series features tech-savvy young adults from around the globe who create mobile apps for a better, more sustainable world. Xmas Without China http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/xmas.html Explores the intersection of consumerism and immigration in American culture. Shadows of Liberty http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/sol.html Uses shocking examples of cover-ups and censorship by the US media to show how a few mega corporations exercise control over the content of our news. The American Ruling Class http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/arc.html A dramatic, musical, documentary satire on class in America that attempts to answer the question 'Who rules America?' I got a whopper of a faculty request and I'd love some ideas from you all... Faculty is looking for documentaries ABOUT THE POWER OF MEDIA to create social change and social justice. * a documentary ABOUT political rap music, or conscious reggae music aimed at political issues, or political punk music. (I SUGGESTED Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes) * a documentary ABOUT radical movies that take on social justice issues. not talking about documentaries about the issues themselves, like a documentary about racism, but specifically a documentary about the USE OF THE MEDIA to address racism, for instance. Social justice issues could include: environmental issues, racism, sexism, economic inequality, war, etc. Or a documentary about the use of the internet for political movements and efforts at social change. Could be international, for instance, how the Arab Spring movements used the internet to organize. How about a documentary about WikiLeaks? (--I SUGGESTED Citizenfour and The Internet's Own Boy) Or any documentary about anti-consumerism / anti-materialism and/or media reform. Also, does anyone know of if there is a video on this guy: Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir --a New York City based radical performance community, with 50 performing members and a congregation in the thousands. Re: [Videolib] Alternative films to Tig ~ resilience Come Hell or High Water
Lisa, Take a look at Come Hell or High Water DVD from Bullfrog Films. Description and trailer here: http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/chow.html This intimate film tells a gigantic story - about race, about power, about so-called development. But it is also a saga of community, resilience, resistance, and hope. It's about everything that matters in our society. We already have several Katrina film options so we're now looking for other issues that can be associated with the concept of resilience; it could be illness, race, LGBT, gender, etc. The field is, actually, pretty wide open. The people making the final selection tend to like films that are recent productions, have a rapid pace (our students lose interest far too quickly), have a high production quality a la Hollywood (for the same reason), and are easily accessible. I think Tig stood out because it appeared to meet all four criteria. Re: [Videolib] Whites and Civil Rights ~ two from Bullfrog Films
Hello, Nicholle, Bullfrog Films offers two titles: The Long Walk to Freedom http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/long.html A story of 12 ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary things in the Civil Rights movement. Home of the Brave http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/hob.html Told through the eyes of her children, this critically acclaimed film examines the case of Viola Liuzzo, the only white woman murdered in the Civil Rights Movement, and reveals why we hear so little about her. A 39-year-old mother of five from Detroit, she joined thousands of people in Selma, Alabama for the historic Voting Rights March in 1965. Shortly after it ended, she was shot in the head by a car full of Klansmen, while driving on a deserted highway. J. Edgar Hoover immediately mounted a smear campaign to divert attention from the fact that a key FBI informant was in the car with Liuzzo's killers. This gender-based discrediting of her name has succeeded up till now in robbing Viola Liuzzo of her rightful place in our history. We have trailers for both of these films on our web site. Re: [Videolib] Source for Cuban Films
Hi, Johanna, If the professor would like to include non-fiction documentaries, Bullfrog Films offers several titles related to Cuban Studies. UNFINISHED SPACES (DVD, 86 and 58 min, SDH captions in English, Spanish subtitles) http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/unsp.html In 1961, three young, visionary architects were commissioned by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara to create Cuba's National Art Schools on the grounds of a former golf course in Havana, Cuba. Construction of their radical designs began immediately and the school's first classes soon followed. Dancers, musicians and artists from all over the country reveled in the beauty of the schools, but as the dream of the Revolution quickly became a reality, construction was abruptly halted and the architects and their designs were deemed irrelevant in the prevailing political climate. Forty years later the schools are in use, but remain unfinished and decaying. Castro has invited the exiled architects back to finish their unrealized dream. CUBA: The Acccidental Revolution (DVD, 2 part series x 45 min, Closed Captioned) http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/cubas.html Two-part series examining Cuba's enormous experiment in sustainable development in the face of an economic crisis brought on by the collapse of the Soviet Union. Re: [Videolib] looking for suggestions: healthcare
Hello, Sarah, Bullfrog Films offers Money Medicine, which compares two medical centers in the US: UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and Intermountain Medical Center in Utah. Although both of these are in the US, the film may help to focus attention on the issues related to comparisons of quality and health care expenditures, and serve as a baseline for comparison with other health care systems in other countries. http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/monme2.html There is also an outstanding 56-page Viewers Guide for further discussion: http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/guides/monme2viewerguide.pdf Synopsis: As rising health care costs threaten to bankrupt the country, MONEY MEDICINE tackles the medical, ethical, and financial challenges of containing runaway health care spending. In addition to illuminating the so-called waste and overtreatment that pervade our medical system, this timely documentary explores promising ways to reduce health care expenditures and improve the overall quality of medical care. MONEY MEDICINE was filmed at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and Intermountain Medical Center in Utah. While UCLA ranks among the nation's top academic medical centers, it spends considerably more than the national average on patient care. In contrast, Intermountain spends about a third less than the national average and is a model for low cost/high quality medical care. The dramatic doctor/patient stories filmed at these two hospitals illuminate the powerful forces driving soaring health care costs as well as proven strategies that effectively reign in excessive medical spending. With remarkable candor, MONEY MEDICINE captures the painful end-of-life treatment choices made by patients and their families, ranging from very aggressive interventions in the ICU to palliative care at home. The film also investigates the controversy surrounding diagnostic testing and screening as well as the shocking treatment variations among patients receiving a variety of elective procedures. As the focus of health care reform shifts from the access crisis to the cost crisis, MONEY MEDICINE makes a timely contribution to the debate over cost containment and deficit reduction. Re: [Videolib] Documentaries about youth unemployment
Hello, Sue, Bullfrog Films offers three titles that may shed some light on the youth unemployment issue in the US, and suggest some positive reponses to those challenges: SHIFT CHANGE DVD http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/shift.html Investigates employee-owned businesses that provide secure, dignified jobs in democratic workplaces even in today's economic crisis. Shows young people gaining employment in employee-owned businesses in the US. A refreshing and thoughtful response to those who argue there are no better or even viable alternatives to our current for-profit, top-down market-based economic organizations...The film exposes the viewer to the wide range of workers (from highly skilled engineers to newly arrived immigrant workers) as well as workplaces (from household appliances to industrial laundry) engaged in cooperative production... could easily be used effectively in economics, sociology, political science, and management courses. Randy Albelda, Professor of Economics and Senior Research Associate at the Center for Social Policy, University of Massachusetts-Boston Highly recommended...Fascinating and inspiring. While viewing this, one may often find oneself asking, 'How can I get started?' The film not only lays out a blueprint for success in forming a progressive cooperative, but encourages the practice as a manner to establish a community consciousness...Addresses such issues as wage pressures, competition, and globalization...A beautifully crafted film. Michael J. Coffta, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, Educational Media Reviews Online DETROPIA DVD http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/detro.html A vivid portrait of Detroit, America's first major post-industrial city, as it struggles to deal with the consequences of a broken economic system. Re: [Videolib] Suggestions for anti-bullying media (in addition to Bully)?
Hello, Scott, Bullfrog Films offers Bully Dance, a short, animated film you may want to list in the resource guide for parents on the topic of school bullying. http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/bully.html BULLY DANCE is the third film in the ShowPeace series -- lively, animated films designed to explore issues of conflict and dispute resolution. They are produced by the National Film Board of Canada. BULLY DANCE is a non-verbal film with a strong message about bullies. In the film a community is disrupted when a bully victimizes a smaller member of the group. Eventually, the whole community becomes involved in dealing with the bully, who is himself a victim in his own house. Issues of peer pressure, accountability and imbalance of power are explored in a story that deals with a sensitive and pervasive problem. It has special resonance for schools in the US today. Visually arresting and supported by a substantial study guide, the film also features a unique soundtrack of percussion instruments composed by Judith Gruber-Stitzer. BULLY DANCE was created by the Academy Award-nominated animator Janet Perlman. Janet also made DINNER FOR TWO, the first film in the ShowPeace series. Collective Wisdom, One of our Social Work faculty members is updating a resource guide directed towards parents on the topic of school bullying and has requested some materials that are not sensationalist or full of scare tactics. I have not seen Bully, but it appears to have received tons of press coming from Weinstein, with the film's initial R rating and associated in-school anti-bullying movement. The reviews I read have been mixed, with the greatest criticism being that the documentary is overly emotional and fails to consider the complex dynamics of school bullying, as well as backgound of the students featured. More than one critic appreciated the attempt, however, calling for additional documentary films to be made that provide greater balance to the issue. Does anyone know of other quality films that perhaps I might recommend? Again, the audience for this resource guide is parents, so some of the educational media you may recommend may not be accessible. Still, I will forward relevant suggestions to the faculty member. Sadly enough, it appears this issue may be too new to our public consciousness for the material to develop. Other issues covered include the use of freelancers and consultants, preferences for programming languages, how the script development workload is divided among the staff and others, relations with the college administration and the college web staff, use of social bookmarking tools and much more. Just a few of the report's many findings are that: * 61.4 percent of libraries in the sample have their own webmasters (or web staffs) that are separate from the college website staff. * Library web staffs account for a mean of more than 80% of the total man hours required to run the academic library web site. College-wide web or IT staff account for a mean of 14.7 percent of the work done on, while an average of just 2.25 percent of total man hours is attributed to consultants, outsourced service providers, and other third parties. * Open-source content management alternatives were extremely popular among the largest colleges in the sample (those with 15,000 or more students), as 53.85 percent of these participants adapted such a system. * Just 22.81 percent of survey participants find it to be relatively easy to position and manipulate videos within the website's CMS. * A mean of 31.26 percent of the routine content updates for the library website are done through dynamic, database-driven web pages rather than through static pages. * 51% of the libraries in the sample maintain a library presence on YouTube. * No community college rated it very easy to enter tabular data into the college website, while 21.05 percent of 4-year and MA-granting colleges thought it very easy to do so. Re: [Videolib] Looking for recommendations on videos about ethics
Hello, Erika, Thanks for your request. Here are several titles from Bullfrog Films: The American Ruling Class http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/arc.html Guaranteed to stimulate hours of heated--but meaningful--classroom discussion about personal ethical choices, this is must viewing for undergraduate business students and younger MBA candidates. James O'Toole, Daniels Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics, Daniels College of Business, University of Denver. Better This World http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/better.html A thriller...The directors have a sympathetic view of Crowder and McKay, but interviews reveal details that are both objective and thought provoking. This film could easily serve as a case study on the ethics of current policies and practices used to ensure our safety in any social justice, political science, or ethics course. Katherine Bertel, SUNY-Buffalo, Educational Media Reviews Online The Flaw http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/flaw.html This timely documentary skillfully shows the links between the predatory lending practices of the mortgage industry, the easy credit policies of the government, the securitization of mortgages by the banks, and the increasing inequality between the very wealthy and everyone else. But it also shows the impact of the bubble on ordinary Americans who lost their homes, their life savings, and in some cases, their dignity. While accepting American capitalism with its essential profit motive, The Flaw still contends, in one commentator's words, that 'capitalism should work for us, not work us over.' John R. Boatright, Professor of Business Ethics, Loyola University Chicago, Author, Ethics and the Conduct of Business and Ethics in Finance Heist: Who Stole the American Dream? http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/heist.html Heist pinpoints and explains those key aspects of our recent history that led to the current deep and lasting economic crisis. It shows dramatically and effectively why we must end the structure of inequality in the US today if we are to avoid repeating the economic crisis in the near future. Richard Wolff, Professor of Economics Emeritus, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Author, Democracy at Work: A Cure for Capitalism (forthcoming) All are available in DVD format as well as licensed for streaming. He isn't interested in videos in which meeting conduct is limited to checklists or discussed by talking heads. Ideally, he'd like to find visual materials that show how speakers - as well as audiences - behave and react in public speaking situations in countries including Brazil, China, Germany, India, and Japan. There are many videos that present meeting behaviors and expectations in the checklist/talking heads format, but I've really hit a brick wall when it comes to videos capturing real life experiences. What I've considered instead is finding film clips from dramas, comedies, and documentaries that would help describe meeting cultures in various countries. For example, for U.S. meetings, clips from the following films might be good to consider: * The Family Man * Wall Street * The Informant * The Yes Men Possible TV Shows: The Apprentice, Dragon's Den (UK) Would anyone have ideas on films that have done a good job representing meetings and business presentations in the following countries? * Brazil * China * Germany * India * Japan * UK If you do, please share the film title, year, and the country/culture represented. Re: [Videolib] PPR question
Hello, Becky, et al, Just wanted to reassure everyone that DVD titles purchased from Bullfrog Films include PPR. A library may screen the program in public or in a community setting, so long as no admission is charged for the film itself. For the Green Festival, Bullfrog Films would be happy to suggest titles from our collection. Strictly speaking, what you're proposing doing constitutes public performance, and therefor requires rights. On the other hand, depends on how risk-averse you are and what it is that you're thinking of screening. If it's Bullfrog or Video Project or another indie distributor, I'd bet a nice courtesy call would get you an OK. Again, if you're feeling frisky, you might just go ahead and do it (unless it's a Disney film). Seems like the risk of mad dog litigation is pretty small. gary Hi, all, I'm going to be participating in a community Green Festival - many booths of vendors/organizations promoting Green Living. I also have a powerpoint presentation from last year that I can run on a continuous loop, but I thought the DVDs would create a little more interest in our booth. If I need PPR, I just won't do it. My understanding is that this is allowed under ADA and that no permission is needed. Right? (Contacting the distributor to find out if there is perhaps a captioned version available, yes. Hello, Meghann, Bullfrog Films offers the following documentary titles you may want to consider: 1. The Motherhood Manifesto (DVD, 2007, 6 chapters/58 minutes, $250) Looks at the obstacles facing working mothers and families and the employer and public policy changes needed to restore work-life balance. Builds compelling arguments for women's pay equity, saner work hours, flexible and part-time work, child care programs, and universal health care for children. We hear the voices of mothers asserting what strikes this viewer as reasonable, even modest, demands for basic needs and a balance between work and family responsibilities...engaging and humorous...Timely. An equally large chunk of the collecting I do, though, is based on what I think we *should* have to support broader curricular needs, and a lot of that comes from distributors like Bullfrog, Icarus, Women Make Movies, etc. But those titles are so expensive that I can only afford to buy a few per year. However, if independent documentary filmmakers sold their films for $30.00 each I would increase my total purchases from them times ten, probably more. I'm not kidding. Nothing would make me happier than flipping through catalogs with a shiny red marker circling all of the titles I would love to have. For me, I would be getting amazing content at a cost that aligns with a pricing model that's supportable under the constraints of my institution's collection development strategies and budget priorities. For the filmmakers and distributors it means that I would be buying more titles, possibly multiple copies, of videos that I wouldn't have even considered before, and if I'm willing to do that then I bet there are at least four other media librarians who'd do the same. There, the filmmakers are still making money (maybe more) and the visibility of their films has increased five-fold. Or is it four? Anyway, you see my point. Elizabeth, Meredith, Karen, are you interested? $30.00 per title, no PPR, and I promise to buy at least 10 times the number of titles I bought last year. Or perhaps there's another mutually beneficial pricing model out there... The subject matter is generally geared towards the academic community or at least not to the popular topics that sell in the thousands and they have a lot of expenses to recoup and it is a bitch to distribute. These are simply not the same as the more popular $19.95 to $29.95 videos you will find at the retail level and keep in mind the distributor only gets back 60% or so on thing sold through third parties like Amazon. I assure you if 1500 institutions would actually buy a wonderful series of films on the post genocide justice system in Rwanda or even one on Gerrymandering ( to plug the ones I deal with) the directors would be over the moon to sell them for $25 knowing more people could see them. When good documentaries are carried by public libraries at a fraction of the rate of bad action movies then you will see a huge drop in prices, heck if just one in every 500 university libraries bought them you would see the same. Gary and deg, To add to the wordless doc list, from Bullfrog Films: Translation Possible http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/trans.html Using a simple filmic device, this film illustrates (visually, without words) the disorientation we all feel on encountering a new culture, and the way we gradually learn to fit in. I've got lots of silent films with title cards I can use, but I am looking for others. Some that come to mind include The Man with the Movie Camera, My Dinner with Andre, and Koyaanisqatsi. Any further suggestions? Re: [Videolib] Resources for teens and early 20's about personalfinance, consumerism, and investing
Hello, Sabra, Bullfrog Films offers two titles you may want to consider. If your library owns the VHS video of Affluenza, you may want to upgrade to the DVD. 1. AFFLUENZA DVD http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/affl.html AFFLUENZA is a groundbreaking film that diagnoses a serious social disease - caused by consumerism, commercialism and rampant materialism - that is having a devastating impact on our families, communities, and the environment. We have more stuff, but less time, and our quality of life seems to be deteriorating. By using personal stories, expert commentary, hilarious old film clips, and uncommercial breaks to illuminate the nature and extent of the disease, AFFLUENZA has appealed to widely diverse audiences: from freshmen orientation programs to consumer credit counseling, and from religious congregations to marketing classes. 2. kids + money DVD http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/kids.html Money talks. Teens in Los Angeles discuss money: getting it, spending it and learning to live without it. Additionally, for a deep and wide list of titles on economics, check out this subject area: http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/subjects/economics.html Call me if you have any questions. Thanks. Re: [Videolib] FW: Cold War/Atomic History
Hello, Rick Sayre, Bullfrog Films offers Nuclear Dynamite DVD, a unique documentary that investigates American and Soviet plans to use nuclear explosives for geographical engineering. The DVD is available in two versions, 72 and 52 minutes. Check the link to our web description here: http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/nd.html Absorbing docu digs up declassified footage to explore a threat that ran quietly alongside the Cold War weapons race. The expertly assembled Nuclear Dynamite looks back on 30 years, now almost forgotten, in which the U.S. and the Soviet Union competed to find the most dramatic peacetime use of atomic explosions. Variety Important and timely, 'Nuclear Dynamite' recalls a fast-fading epoch of the world's nuclear history. Together with the documentary 'Atomic Cafe', on the government propaganda and popular culture of the early nuclear age, and such commercial films as 'The Day the Earth Stood Still', 'On the Beach', and 'Dr. Strangelove', it would wonderfully enrich courses on postwar America or on the nuclear era...Highly recommended. Re: [Videolib] Doing Business in China?
Hello, Deborah, Bullfrog Films offers China Blue DVD, that links the power of the US consumer market to the daily lives of a Chinese factory owner and young factory workers. It provides a rare glimpse at China's rapid transformation into a free market society. See link and trailer below. CHINA BLUE http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/china.html China Blue offers an illuminating window onto the normally hidden worlds of global production. It provides unparalleled access to the everyday lives of garment workers in China, giving them voice, and giving a face to the reality underlying China's emergence as the factory floor to the world. For those interested in globalization, economic development, or current controversies around sweatshops, China Blue is an excellent introduction to the experiences of workers from developing countries - even those supposedly 'winning' through globalization. Re: [Videolib] Indians of California video?
Hello, Janice, If you are unable to find this specific program, you may want to consider a more recent production about North American Indians from Bullfrog Films: COMING TO LIGHT: Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indians (2000, 84 or 56 min, DVD) Directed by Anne Makepeace http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/ctl.html Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952) was a driven, pioneer photographer who set out in 1900 to document traditional Indian life. He became the most famous photographer of his time, creating an enormous body of work. COMING TO LIGHT tells the dramatic story of Curtis' life, and his changing views of the people he set out to document. Hopi, Navajo, Eskimo, Blackfeet, Blood, Piegan, Suquamish, and Kwakiutl people who are descended from Curtis subjects, or who are using his photographs for cultural preservation, discuss the meaning of the images to Indian people and to all Americans today. An unusually well-balanced view of Edward Curtis' life and works as the best known photographer of North American Indian people during the first part of the twentieth century.
