[Videolib] Retirement ~ Retunement ~ Farewell

2016-12-14 Thread Elizabeth Stanley
Dear friends on Videolib,

It is with great joy and a measure of sadness that I write to say farewell to
my friends and colleagues. On October 1st I completed twenty-nine years with
Bullfrog Films, through four format shifts (from 16mm to VHS to DVD to
streaming). At the National Media Market in Baltimore I shared my news in
person with attendees, and celebrated my retirement with cake and music in the
Bullfrog Films suite.

Under a full moon, moving towards the Winter Solstice, I see my path to lay it
all down.

Thanks to all of you who have worked with me and Bullfrog Films all these
years. I am grateful for your support and encouragement. One of my favorite
jokes (I'll tell you another time) has a great punchline: "Ist es nicht
wunderbar dass wir doch zusammen gekommen sind!"

Isn't it wonderful that we got together!

With love and gratitude,
Elizabeth

Re: [Videolib] Suggestions: films with themes of university level int'l students in the US or US students studying abroad

2016-10-20 Thread Elizabeth Stanley
Dear Videolib friends,

Bullfrog Films suggests a short film called “Translation Possible” that may
spark discussion among both international students in the US, and US students
studying abroad—both groups having to adjust to new surroundings!

Here is the link to the description page and trailer:
http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/trans.html

Translation Possible (DVD, 2007, 11 minutes)
Using a simple filmic device, this film illustrates the disorientation we all
feel on encountering a new culture, and the way we gradually learn to fit in.

A European tourist arrives in Shanghai, and finds herself totally disoriented
in a different culture.

In “Translation Possible” we see the process of overcoming cultural and
language barriers rendered in a surprising way, illustrated visually, without
words. We marvel at the filmmaker's clever technique that so effectively
illustrates people out-of-sync with their surroundings.

It is sympathetic and instructive both to the person who finds themselves in a
new situation that seems incoherent, and to a person who wants to help someone
seemingly overwhelmed by their new environment.

Hello community,

I've had a request from a faculty member for a streaming documentary about the
use of therapy dogs to treat veterans with PTSD. Ideally it should be about
35-45 minutes long. I've located some titles that might work and have had a
look at Kanopy, New Day, California Newsreel, etc.,, but if anyone knows of a
title like this I would appreciate the suggestions!

Hi, Rhonda,

Great questions! We've come up with a list of titles from Bullfrog Films that
may be interesting to the faculty who made this request.

clothing has been decreasing for decades
the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically.

Human Terrain: War Becomes Academic

'Human Terrain Systems', under which
social scientists are embedded with combat troops.

Life Apps http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/la.html
Part of the "Reframing Rio" Series, this 5-part series features tech-savvy
young adults from around the globe who create mobile apps for a better, more
sustainable world.

Xmas Without China http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/xmas.html
Explores the intersection of consumerism and immigration in American culture.

Shadows of Liberty http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/sol.html
Uses shocking examples of cover-ups and censorship by the US media to show how
a few mega corporations exercise control over the content of our news.

The American Ruling Class http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/arc.html
A dramatic, musical, documentary satire on class in America that attempts to
answer the question 'Who rules America?'

I got a whopper of a faculty request and I'd love some ideas from you all...

Faculty is looking for documentaries ABOUT THE POWER OF MEDIA to create social
change and social justice.

* a documentary ABOUT political rap music, or conscious reggae music
aimed at political issues, or political punk music. (I SUGGESTED Hip-Hop:
Beyond Beats and Rhymes)

* a documentary ABOUT radical movies that take on social justice
issues. not talking about documentaries about the issues themselves, like a
documentary about racism, but specifically a documentary about the USE OF THE
MEDIA to address racism, for instance.

Social justice issues could include: environmental issues, racism, sexism,
economic inequality, war, etc.

Or a documentary about the use of the internet for political movements and
efforts at social change. Could be international, for instance, how the Arab
Spring movements used the internet to organize.

How about a documentary about WikiLeaks? (--I SUGGESTED Citizenfour and The
Internet's Own Boy)

Or any documentary about anti-consumerism / anti-materialism and/or media
reform.

Also, does anyone know of if there is a video on this guy:

Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir --a New York City based radical
performance community, with 50 performing members and a congregation in the
thousands. We are wild anti-consumerist gospel shouters and Earth loving urban
activists who have worked with communities on four continents defending
community, life and imagination. Our Devils over the 15 years of our "church"
have remained the same: Consumerism and Militarism.

Love to hear from you all.thanks!

This intimate film tells a gigantic story - about race, about power, about

Hi Mat,

The overriding theme for this film series is resilience (we are, after all,
marking Katrina10 in a big way down here). We already have several Katrina film
options so we're now looking for other issues that can be associated with the
concept of resilience; it could be illness, race, LGBT, gender, etc. The field
is, actually, pretty wide open. The people making the final selection tend to
like films that are recent productions, have a rapid pace (our students lose
interest far too quickly), have a high production quality a la Hollywood (for
the same reason), and are easily accessible. I think Tig stood out because it
appeared to meet all four criteria.

Thanks!

Sorry can't help think of an alternative but just know you are not alone. The
Netflix model has been to only allow docs they buy to show in NY LA to make
them Academy qualified and then refuse all other requests from theaters to
colleges. A lot of venues really wanted to show the Nina Simone doc and others
but were blown off.

I am not even sure if Netflix ever releases their docs on DVD/blu ray

Anyone know if you can legally buy a copy of VIRUNGA?

Libraries and archives are increasingly responsible for curation of digital
data. This includes not only acquiring and managing data but curation within
the context of libraries and archives. This workshop will be an interactive
event, including a combination of lecture, discussion, and also engagement with
data creators and facilitating new forms of research through data use. It will
provide participants with an introduction to the primary opportunities,
challenges, principles and strategies for addressing data practical exercises.

There are two registration options: Certificate Program, and Non-Certificate
Program. Participants who wish to engage in a specific project of interest can
work with an instructor to do so. These participants will receive a certificate
of accomplishment from the School of Information and Library Science UNC-Chapel
Hill and the Charleston Conference following the completion of their project
work and approval from the supervising faculty.

Re: [Videolib] Whites and Civil Rights ~ two from Bullfrog Films

2014-08-27 Thread Elizabeth Stanley
Hello, Nicholle,

Bullfrog Films offers two titles: The Long Walk to Freedom
http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/long.html
A story of 12 ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary things in the
Civil Rights movement.

Home of the Brave http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/hob.html
Told through the eyes of her children, this critically acclaimed film examines
the case of Viola Liuzzo, the only white woman murdered in the Civil Rights
Movement, and reveals why we hear so little about her. A 39-year-old mother of
five from Detroit, she joined thousands of people in Selma, Alabama for the
historic Voting Rights March in 1965. Shortly after it ended, she was shot in
the head by a car full of Klansmen, while driving on a deserted highway. J.
Edgar Hoover immediately mounted a smear campaign to divert attention from the
fact that a key FBI informant was in the car with Liuzzo's killers. This
gender-based discrediting of her name has succeeded up till now in robbing
Viola Liuzzo of her rightful place in our history.

We have trailers for both of these films on our web site. Let me know if you
have any questions.

Hi, all,

Next spring, we will be moving into a brand new library! Yay for us. I'm
starting to look at opening day collections for DVD and CDs. Not that I think
we'll have any funds for it, but just in case. For films, along with Academy
Award winners (which I know can be controversial), AFI lists, National Film
Registry, is there anything else to look at? This can also include television,
Spanish films, and information/documentaries. Thanks a lot!

Re: [Videolib] Source for Cuban Films

2014-04-25 Thread Elizabeth Stanley
Hi, Johanna,

If the professor would like to include non-fiction documentaries, Bullfrog
Films offers several titles related to Cuban Studies.

UNFINISHED SPACES (DVD, 86 and 58 min, SDH captions in English, Spanish
subtitles)
http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/unsp.html
In 1961, three young, visionary architects were commissioned by Fidel Castro
and Che Guevara to create Cuba's National Art Schools on the grounds of a
former golf course in Havana, Cuba. Construction of their radical designs began
immediately and the school's first classes soon followed. Dancers, musicians
and artists from all over the country reveled in the beauty of the schools, but
as the dream of the Revolution quickly became a reality, construction was
abruptly halted and the architects and their designs were deemed irrelevant in
the prevailing political climate. Forty years later the schools are in use, but
remain unfinished and decaying. Castro has invited the exiled architects back
to finish their unrealized dream.

CUBA: The Acccidental Revolution (DVD, 2 part series x 45 min, Closed
Captioned)
http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/cubas.html
Two-part series examining Cuba's enormous experiment in sustainable development
in the face of an economic crisis brought on by the collapse of the Soviet
Union.

Streaming licenses are available for these titles. Please call.

Re: [Videolib] looking for suggestions: healthcare

2014-04-24 Thread Elizabeth Stanley
Hello, Sarah,

Bullfrog Films offers Money Medicine, which compares two medical centers in
the US: UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and Intermountain Medical Center in
Utah. Although both of these are in the US, the film may help to focus
attention on the issues related to comparisons of quality and health care
expenditures, and serve as a baseline for comparison with other health care
systems in other countries.

http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/monme2.html

There is also an outstanding 56-page Viewers Guide for further discussion:
http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/guides/monme2viewerguide.pdf

Synopsis: As rising health care costs threaten to bankrupt the country, MONEY
MEDICINE tackles the medical, ethical, and financial challenges of containing
runaway health care spending. In addition to illuminating the so-called waste
and overtreatment that pervade our medical system, this timely documentary
explores promising ways to reduce health care expenditures and improve the
overall quality of medical care.

MONEY MEDICINE was filmed at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and
Intermountain Medical Center in Utah. While UCLA ranks among the nation's top
academic medical centers, it spends considerably more than the national average
on patient care. In contrast, Intermountain spends about a third less than the
national average and is a model for low cost/high quality medical care. The
dramatic doctor/patient stories filmed at these two hospitals illuminate the
powerful forces driving soaring health care costs as well as proven strategies
that effectively reign in excessive medical spending.

With remarkable candor, MONEY MEDICINE captures the painful end-of-life
treatment choices made by patients and their families, ranging from very
aggressive interventions in the ICU to palliative care at home. The film also
investigates the controversy surrounding diagnostic testing and screening as
well as the shocking treatment variations among patients receiving a variety of
elective procedures.

As the focus of health care reform shifts from the access crisis to the cost
crisis, MONEY MEDICINE makes a timely contribution to the debate over cost
containment and deficit reduction.

Re: [Videolib] Documentaries about youth unemployment

2014-02-27 Thread Elizabeth Stanley
Hello, Sue,

Bullfrog Films offers three titles that may shed some light on the youth
unemployment issue in the US, and suggest some positive reponses to those
challenges:

SHIFT CHANGE DVD http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/shift.html
Investigates employee-owned businesses that provide secure, dignified jobs in
democratic workplaces even in today's economic crisis.
Shows young people gaining employment in employee-owned businesses in the US.

A refreshing and thoughtful response to those who argue there are no better or
even viable alternatives to our current for-profit, top-down market-based
economic organizations...The film exposes the viewer to the wide range of
workers (from highly skilled engineers to newly arrived immigrant workers) as
well as workplaces (from household appliances to industrial laundry) engaged in
cooperative production... could easily be used effectively in economics,
sociology, political science, and management courses. Randy Albelda, Professor
of Economics and Senior Research Associate at the Center for Social Policy,
University of Massachusetts-Boston

Highly recommended...Fascinating and inspiring. While viewing this, one may
often find oneself asking, 'How can I get started?' The film not only lays out
a blueprint for success in forming a progressive cooperative, but encourages
the practice as a manner to establish a community consciousness...Addresses
such issues as wage pressures, competition, and globalization...A beautifully
crafted film. Michael J. Coffta, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania,
Educational Media Reviews Online

DETROPIA DVD http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/detro.html
A vivid portrait of Detroit, America's first major post-industrial city, as it
struggles to deal with the consequences of a broken economic system.

WE ARE NOT GHOSTS DVD http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/wang.html
Detroiters are reinventing the old Motor City as a vibrant new self-sustaining
and human-scaled city for a post industrial world. In the midst of high
unemployment, the film shows college age and young adults stepping up to
leadership in small-scale, local and community businesses and organizations
that provide a path from unemployment.

All three are available for purchase or rent, with public performance rights
for screening on campus. Please contact us.

Hello, Elizabeth McMahon,

Thanks for the shout out about Rachel Carson. Take a look at A Sense of
Wonder.

When pioneering environmentalist Rachel Carson published Silent Spring in 1962,
the backlash from her critics thrust her into the center of a political
maelstrom. Despite her private persona, her convictions about the risks posed
by chemical pesticides forced her into the role of controversial public figure.
A Sense of Wonder is an intimate and poignant portrait of Rachel Carson's
life as she emerges as America's most successful advocate for the natural
world. Starring Kaiulani Lee as Rachel Carson.

Hi Elizabeth! You reminded me of the incredible documentary Rachel Carson's
Silent Spring about the grandmother of the environmental rights moving, whose
book really pissed off the federal government. She was painted as a fringe
radical, but her legacy is long-lasting.

Hi Vicki,

HBO doesn't currently license its documentaries for streaming and, as you are a
for-profit college, you aren't covered for face-to-face screenings under
section 110 of Copyright. If your students are able to access physical
reserves in a library, that might be your best option for making these films
available.

Re: [Videolib] Contact info for Raincoast Storylines? + Bullfrog Films' COCAINE UNWRAPPED

Kim and friends on Videolib,

One new release from Bullfrog Films documents the devastating effects of the
war on drugs and suggests realistic alternatives:

COCAINE UNWRAPPEDhttp://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/coke.html
2013, 83 minutes
DVD, Digital Rights Available

View details here: http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/coke.html

The story of cocaine: coca farmers in Colombia, drugs mules in Ecuadorian
prisons, cocaine factories in the Bolivian jungle, dealers on the streets of
Mexico, law enforcement officials on the streets of Baltimore -- and the
everyday consumers around the dinner tables of the West. It's a story of
politics, death, economic devastation and human suffering, and explores
realistic alternatives to the war on drugs.

Front line reportage, exclusive access to the political leaders of Latin
America, revealing interviews with drugs czars -- watch this film and you will
never think the same about cocaine and the War on Drugs again.

Cocaine Unwrapped is a terrific introduction to the insanity known as the War
on Drugs. Teachers and professors who want to give their students a fresh and
compelling perspective could not do better than to start with this documentary.

Re: [Videolib] Suggestions for anti-bullying media (in addition to Bully)?

2013-05-14 Thread Elizabeth Stanley
Hello, Scott,

Bullfrog Films offers Bully Dance, a short, animated film you may want to
list in the resource guide for parents on the topic of school bullying.
http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/bully.html

BULLY DANCE is the third film in the ShowPeace series -- lively, animated films
designed to explore issues of conflict and dispute resolution. They are
produced by the National Film Board of Canada.

BULLY DANCE is a non-verbal film with a strong message about bullies. In the
film a community is disrupted when a bully victimizes a smaller member of the
group. Eventually, the whole community becomes involved in dealing with the
bully, who is himself a victim in his own house. Issues of peer pressure,
accountability and imbalance of power are explored in a story that deals with a
sensitive and pervasive problem. It has special resonance for schools in the
US today.

Visually arresting and supported by a substantial study guide, the film also
features a unique soundtrack of percussion instruments composed by Judith
Gruber-Stitzer.

BULLY DANCE was created by the Academy Award-nominated animator Janet Perlman.
Janet also made DINNER FOR TWO, the first film in the ShowPeace series.

Subject: [Videolib] Suggestions for anti-bullying media (in addition to Bully)?

Collective Wisdom,

One of our Social Work faculty members is updating a resource guide directed
towards parents on the topic of school bullying and has requested some
materials that are not sensationalist or full of scare tactics. I have not
seen Bully, but it appears to have received tons of press coming from
Weinstein, with the film's initial R rating and associated in-school
anti-bullying movement. The reviews I read have been mixed, with the greatest
criticism being that the documentary is overly emotional and fails to consider
the complex dynamics of school bullying, as well as backgound of the students
featured. More than one critic appreciated the attempt, however, calling for
additional documentary films to be made that provide greater balance to the
issue.

Does anyone know of other quality films that perhaps I might recommend? Again,
the audience for this resource guide is parents, so some of the educational
media you may recommend may not be accessible. Still, I will forward relevant
suggestions to the faculty member. Sadly enough, it appears this issue may be
too new to our public consciousness for the material to develop.

Best,
Scott

Hi Nell,
Have you looked at Valentino's Ghost?
Valentino's Ghost takes viewers on a chronological journey through more than a
century of images of Muslims, Arabs and Islam in the U.S. media, from the early
20th-century fantasies of romantic sheiks to today's damaging stereotypes as
evil fanatics. Through interviews with Robert Fisk, Niall Ferguson, and John
Mearsheimer amongst others, the film shows the way in which the changing image
of Arabs and Muslims has mirrored America's political agenda in the Middle
East. Valentino's Ghost aims to sharpen viewers' media literacy and increase
their skills in questioning media representations, especially those of minority
groups and people with whom our government is in conflict. The film ends with a
report of a few Hollywood films that have provided complex images and avoided
ethnic stereotyping-Container

I have been asked to come up with a list of films on the lives of undocumented
workers. The films need to focus on workers and their labor issues, as opposed
to films on other parts of the undocumented experience (i.e. wonderful films
like Inocente).

I have several in our collection and don't need to know about those:

Maid in America
No Sweat
El Contrato
Los Trabajadores / The Workers

but any others in the same ball park would be good to know about, especially if
they highlight Latino workers. Thanks,

Primary Research Group has published Academic Library Website Benchmarks, 2013
Edition, ISBN 978-157440- 221-6.

The 160+ page study shows how academic libraries are re-shaping their websites.
The study is based on a survey of 56 academic library web staffs with data
broken out by size and type of institution and other criteria. The study gives
exhaustive data about academic library preferences in areas such as: use of
mashups, library social media site policy, web staff size, role of the college
and library it staff, range of individuals allowed to enter content, content
policy, website branding, website budgets, plans for upgrades and overhauls,
staff time devoted to various website maintenance and development tasks, use of
blogs, listservs, rss feeds, and email newsletters, content management system
development and satisfaction levels, plans for federated search, search box
presentation strategy, use of cascading style sheets, ease of use of the site
including ease of positioning videos and tables, entering same content to
multiple locations, checking the functionality of page links, reporting
features, and restricting site access. Other issues covered include the use of
freelancers and consultants, preferences for programming languages, how the
script development workload is divided among the staff and others, relations
with the college administration and the college web staff, use of social
bookmarking tools and much more.

Just a few of the report's many findings are that:

* 61.4 percent of libraries in the sample have their own webmasters (or
web staffs) that are separate from the college website staff.
* Library web staffs account for a mean of more than 80% of the total man
hours required to run the academic library web site. College-wide web or IT
staff account for a mean of 14.7 percent of the work done on, while an average
of just 2.25 percent of total man hours is attributed to consultants,
outsourced service providers, and other third parties.
* Open-source content management alternatives were extremely popular
among the largest colleges in the sample (those with 15,000 or more students),
as 53.85 percent of these participants adapted such a system.
* Just 22.81 percent of survey participants find it to be relatively
easy to position and manipulate videos within the website's CMS.
* A mean of 31.26 percent of the routine content updates for the library
website are done through dynamic, database-driven web pages rather than through
static pages.
* 51% of the libraries in the sample maintain a library presence on
YouTube.
* No community college rated it very easy to enter tabular data into
the college website, while 21.05 percent of 4-year and MA-granting colleges
thought it very easy to do so.

Hello, Erika,

Thanks for your request. Here are several titles from Bullfrog Films:

The American Ruling Class http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/arc.html

about personal ethical choices, this is must viewing for undergraduate business
students and younger MBA candidates. James O'Toole, Daniels Distinguished
Professor of Business Ethics, Daniels College of Business, University of Denver.

Better This World http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/better.html
A thriller...The directors have a sympathetic view of Crowder and McKay, but
interviews reveal details that are both objective and thought provoking. This
film could easily serve as a case study on the ethics of current policies and
practices used to ensure our safety in any social justice, political science,
or ethics course. Katherine Bertel, SUNY-Buffalo, Educational Media Reviews
Online

The Flaw http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/flaw.html
This timely documentary skillfully shows the links between the predatory
lending practices of the mortgage industry, the easy credit policies of the
government, the securitization of mortgages by the banks, and the increasing
inequality between the very wealthy and everyone else. But it also shows the
impact of the bubble on ordinary Americans who lost their homes, their life
savings, and in some cases, their dignity. While accepting American capitalism
with its essential profit motive, The Flaw still contends, in one commentator's
words, that 'capitalism should work for us, not work us over.' John R.
Boatright, Professor of Business Ethics, Loyola University Chicago, Author,
Ethics and the Conduct of Business and Ethics in Finance

Heist: Who Stole the American Dream?
http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/heist.html
Heist pinpoints and explains those key aspects of our recent history that led
to the current deep and lasting economic crisis. It shows dramatically and
effectively why we must end the structure of inequality in the US today if we
are to avoid repeating the economic crisis in the near future. Richard Wolff,

Hello,

I've been asked by a faculty member to identify clips from films that would
present how business meetings and other public presentations are conducted in a
variety of countries. He isn't interested in videos in which meeting conduct
is limited to checklists or discussed by talking heads. Ideally, he'd like to
find visual materials that show how speakers - as well as audiences - behave
and react in public speaking situations in countries including Brazil, China,
Germany, India, and Japan.

There are many videos that present meeting behaviors and expectations in the
checklist/talking heads format, but I've really hit a brick wall when it comes
to videos capturing real life experiences.

What I've considered instead is finding film clips from dramas, comedies, and
documentaries that would help describe meeting cultures in various countries.
For example, for U.S. meetings, clips from the following films might be good to
consider:

 *   The Family Man
 *   Wall Street
 *   The Informant
 *   The Yes Men

Possible TV Shows: The Apprentice, Dragon's Den (UK)

Would anyone have ideas on films that have done a good job representing
meetings and business presentations in the following countries?

 *   Brazil
 *   China
 *   Germany
 *   India
 *   Japan
 *   UK

If you do, please share the film title, year, and the country/culture
represented. Thank you for any and all help!

Hi All

Well, it has been a little over three months since my retirement from
videolibrariandom... An interesting experiment in letting go. I've recently
started a part-time (17 hr a week) gig as coodinator of public services for the
Judah L. Magnes Museum in Berkeley (www.magnes.org) (now administratively a
part of UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library) ...something completely new for
me--both exciting and a bit scary. It's a contract job, so I'm on for the next
year. Then I'll have to reassess.

After a great deal of debate, I think it's probably time for me to pull the
plug on my videolib subscription at the end of this week. I'm sad about doing
this...seems like such a final break with my beloved professional past. But
probably best to move on.

Gisele Tanasse, Operations Supervisor in the Berkeley Media Center, will be
managing the list after my departure (at least in the short-run). Pls address
queries to her at gtana...@library.berkeley.edu

My email is hand...@berkeley.edu and I'd love to stay in touch. I'd be glad to
continue bouncing ideas around and sharing whatever professional wisdom I have
(as long as the shelf-life is still good) with librarian colleagues or with
film distributors or makers.

Salud!

Dear Librarian-

The ALA Public Programs Office is currently seeking public, academic, and
community college librarians to serve as peer reviewers for the Bridging
Cultures Bookshelf on Muslim
Journeyshttp://www.programminglibrarian.org/muslimjourneys project. Only
those working for libraries that *are not* applying to receive the Muslim
Journeys Bookshelf are eligible to serve.

To volunteer as a Bookshelf reviewer, please send an email to
aryche...@ala.orgmailto:aryche...@ala.org with your name, title, and library
name as soon as possible. If you are not currently employed with a library,
please send a copy of your résumé. Those selected will be asked to review a
maximum of 50 applications during the review term, October 26 through November
15. Each application will take approximately 5-10 minutes to review via a
password protected Web site. All reviews must be submitted by November 15.

Reviewers will be selected in the coming weeks, and all volunteers will be
notified of their reviewer status no later than October 22. Review instructions
and access to the reviewer website will be sent via email on October 26.

The Bridging Cultures Bookshelf is a project of the National Endowment for the
Humanities, conducted in cooperation with the ALA Public Programs Office.
Because this project will impact thousands of library users across the country,

Hi

Well, maybe you could bring in a couple of table lamps, a nice area rug, and
comfy couch and call it home video viewing...

Strictly speaking, what you're proposing doing constitutes public performance,
and therefor requires rights. On the other hand, depends on how risk-averse you
are and what it is that you're thinking of screening.
If it's Bullfrog or Video Project or another indie distributor, I'd bet a nice
courtesy call would get you an OK. Again, if you're feeling frisky, you might
just go ahead and do it (unless it's a Disney film). Seems like the risk of mad
dog litigation is pretty small.

 Hi, all,

I'm going to be participating in a community Green Festival - many
booths of vendors/organizations promoting Green Living. Could I take
a laptop and run a couple of subject oriented DVDs to show examples of
what we have? They would run for the whole program - about 5 hours.
I also have a powerpoint presentation from last year that I can run on

interest in our booth. If I need PPR, I just won't do it. Thanks.

Re: [Videolib] Captioning - Is permission required from distributor?

2011-10-12 Thread Elizabeth Stanley

Gary, Barb, et al,

Several colleges and universities have contacted Bullfrog Films for permission
to caption a video when there is no closed-captioned version available.
We often provide a transcript of the program to assist in this process. Now
most new DVD titles from Bullfrog Films have SDH captions: subtitled for the
deaf
and hearing impaired. Please contact us for further details.

I believe that, technically, permission must be sought... Don't think the ADA
makes provisions for doing this without such.

Check out: (legal opinion, State of California)

Option 2
Obtain Permission to Caption Audiovisual Materials If a closed-captioned
version of the needed video is unavailable from the publisher, the next best
option is to request permission from the copyright owner to caption the video.
It is important that you obtain written permission to caption the video. You
should not interpret a lack of response from the copyright holder as permission
to caption.

Gary Handman

I just saw a memo for our system counsel that struck me as wrong, but
 need some backing evidence.

It is telling the Office of Disability Services to ask permission from
distributors before creating an open captioned version of films.
My understanding is that this is allowed under ADA and that no
 permission is needed. Right?
(Contacting the distributor to find out if there is perhaps a
captioned version available, yes. Permission, no.)

Captioning is only being added to videos where there is a
hearing-impaired student enrolled in the class. (And only on legally acquired
 -i.e.
 purchased-videos.)

I am appealing to the wisdom of the list. A music faculty member wants recent
dvds on the various eras of classical music:

Middle Ages Renaissance
Baroque
Classical
Romantic
20th Century

He would like something visually stimulating and attention-grabbing. We have
in our collection:

Art and Music as Reflections of Time (VHS) 1986, originally 1974, which has
parts on all of the eras
Teaching Company's Music Appreciation series of lectures (VHS) 1993
Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts (DVD)
Various VHS and DVD productions on individual composers

What the faculty member would like are interesting, dynamic presentations on
all of the eras. On OCLC, I found a Films for Humanities series, The
CLEARVUE/eav Art Music Series - 8 parts for $799.60. It is not available on
Films on Demand, which we purchase yearly. Even though the description calls
the series visually dynamic, all I saw in some of the various part previews was
a talking head.

I have checked a number of our regular vendors, and have found nothing that
fits the bill. Do any of you wise librarians have any suggestions??? Any help
would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, Meghann,

Bullfrog Films offers the following documentary titles you may want to consider:

1. The Motherhood Manifesto (DVD, 2007, 6 chapters/58 minutes, $250)
Looks at the obstacles facing working mothers and families and the employer and
public policy changes needed to restore work-life balance.

Builds compelling arguments for women's pay equity, saner work hours, flexible
and part-time work, child care programs, and universal health care for
children. We hear the voices of mothers asserting what strikes this viewer as
reasonable, even modest, demands for basic needs and a balance between work and
family responsibilities...engaging and humorous...Timely. Cynthia Ninivaggi,
Georgian Court University, Anthropology of Work Review

2. This Black Soil (DVD, 58 minutes, 2004, $250)
http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/this.html
Chronicles the successful community struggle of Bayview, VA, under the
leadership of visionary women, to pursue a new goal of prosperity.
* ALA Notable Videos for Adults

This black soil is unique in that the filmmaker is able to document a decade
long process of American activism at the grassroots level. It serves as a
motivational and inspirational story for all social activists. Highly
Recommended. Monique Threatt, Educational Media Reviews Online

A lot of the collecting I do is based on faculty requests but they're
requesting Glee and Twilight. An equally large chunk of the collecting I do,
though, is based on what I think we *should* have to support broader curricular
needs, and a lot of that comes from distributors like Bullfrog, Icarus, Women
Make Movies, etc. But those titles are so expensive that I can only afford to
buy a few per year.

However, if independent documentary filmmakers sold their films for $30.00 each
I would increase my total purchases from them times ten, probably more. I'm
not kidding. Nothing would make me happier than flipping through catalogs with
a shiny red marker circling all of the titles I would love to have. For me, I
would be getting amazing content at a cost that aligns with a pricing model
that's supportable under the constraints of my institution's collection
development strategies and budget priorities. For the filmmakers and
distributors it means that I would be buying more titles, possibly multiple
copies, of videos that I wouldn't have even considered before, and if I'm
willing to do that then I bet there are at least four other media librarians
who'd do the same.

There, the filmmakers are still making money (maybe more) and the visibility of
their films has increased five-fold. Or is it four? Anyway, you see my point.

Elizabeth, Meredith, Karen, are you interested? $30.00 per title, no PPR, and
I promise to buy at least 10 times the number of titles I bought last year.

Or perhaps there's another mutually beneficial pricing model out there...

generally geared towards the academic community or at least not to the popular
topics that sell in the thousands and they have a lot of expenses to recoup and
it is a bitch to distribute. These are simply not the same as the more popular
$19.95 to $29.95 videos you will find at the retail level and keep in mind the
distributor only gets back 60% or so on thing sold through third parties like
Amazon. I assure you if 1500 institutions would actually buy a wonderful series
of films on the post genocide justice system in Rwanda or even one on
Gerrymandering ( to plug the ones I deal with) the directors would be over the
moon to sell them for $25 knowing more people could see them. When good
documentaries are carried by public libraries at a fraction of the rate of bad
action movies then you will see a huge drop in prices, heck if just one in
every 500 university libraries bought them you would see the same.

Problem isn't solved if the expensive title they've taken out and lost is
out of distribution.

All depends on the mission of your collection (and whether preservation
for long-haul to support teaching and research is part of it)

Gary (who's cool in Berkeley)

At the University of Southern California we have in our collection
at least 750 documentary films costing $250 or more. And no effetism
here. All such films fully circulate. And if a student happens
to lose such an item then said student is fully obliged to reimburse the
costs of the film. Problem solved--and it is a policy that seems
very much to work for us.

And greetings from ALA and New Orleans!

Hello, Sabra,

Bullfrog Films offers two titles you may want to consider. If your
library owns the VHS video of Affluenza, you may want to upgrade to
the DVD.

1. AFFLUENZA DVD http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/affl.html
AFFLUENZA is a groundbreaking film that diagnoses a serious social
disease - caused by consumerism, commercialism and rampant materialism -
that is having a devastating impact on our families, communities, and
the environment. We have more stuff, but less time, and our quality of
life seems to be deteriorating. By using personal stories, expert
commentary, hilarious old film clips, and uncommercial breaks to
illuminate the nature and extent of the disease, AFFLUENZA has appealed
to widely diverse audiences: from freshmen orientation programs to
consumer credit counseling, and from religious congregations to
marketing classes.

2. kids + money DVD http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/kids.html
Money talks. Teens in Los Angeles discuss money: getting it, spending it

Subject: [Videolib] FW: Cold War/Atomic History

Thought I'd pass this one on to the collective wisdom of the video-lib
group. I have a faculty member looking for film suggestions on the
following topic:

Subject: Cold War/Atomic History

Is anyone aware of a good 1-2 hour film on early Cold War history and
politics? I'd like to give my ILA [i.e., freshman seminar] class some
more insight on the tensions surrounding the late 40's and early 50's.
I'd also be open to popular films which really come out of the fear of
communism and soviet aggression.

Thanks in advance!

Rick

Re: [Videolib] Doing Business in China?

Hello, Deborah,

Bullfrog Films offers China Blue DVD, that links the power of the US
consumer market to the daily lives of a Chinese factory owner and young
factory workers.
It provides a rare glimpse at China's rapid transformation into a free
market society. See link and trailer below.

CHINA BLUE http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/china.html

China Blue offers an illuminating window onto the normally hidden
worlds of global production. It provides unparalleled access to the
everyday lives of garment workers in China, giving them voice, and
giving a face to the reality underlying China's emergence as the factory
floor to the world. For those interested in globalization, economic
development, or current controversies around sweatshops, China Blue is
an excellent introduction to the experiences of workers from developing
countries - even those supposedly 'winning' through globalization. Dara

hi everyone

Do you have any recommendations for something current in video for
students of international business regarding the difficulties that
western businesses may encounter when doing business in China: i.e.
different business practice norms, cultural and/or communication
differences?

Thanks!

Re: [Videolib] Indians of California video?

2010-07-01 Thread Elizabeth Stanley

Hello, Janice,

If you are unable to find this specific program, you may want to
consider a more recent production about North American Indians from
Bullfrog Films:

COMING TO LIGHT: Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indians (2000,
84 or 56 min, DVD)
Directed by Anne Makepeace
http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/ctl.html

Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952) was a driven, pioneer photographer who set
out in 1900 to document traditional Indian life. He became the most
famous photographer of his time, creating an enormous body of work.
COMING TO LIGHT tells the dramatic story of Curtis' life, and his
changing views of the people he set out to document. Hopi, Navajo,
Eskimo, Blackfeet, Blood, Piegan, Suquamish, and Kwakiutl people who are
descended from Curtis subjects, or who are using his photographs for
cultural preservation, discuss the meaning of the images to Indian
people and to all Americans today.

An unusually well-balanced view of Edward Curtis' life and works as the
best known photographer of North American Indian people during the first
part of the twentieth century. Bill Sturtevant, Curator of Ethnology,
National Museum of National History, Smithsonian Institution

Let me know if you have any questions.

Anyone know where I could get a copy of this? Last distributor I could
find was Peter Pan Industries, 1994, now out of business.

Indians of California [videorecording] / a film by Arthur and Donald
