Direct download link for VNC 4.1.2 Unix source

2006-07-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello,

I'm doing an updated ebuild for Gentoo using modular X.org 7.0 for VNC 4.1.2.
The question is that Gentoo needs a direct download link for the source.

The actual ebuild in the distribution is using 4.0 version, available from
http://www.realvnc.com/dist/vnc-4.0-unixsrc.tar.gz. But newer versions, like
4.1.1 or 4.1.2 aren't available at the following URL's:
http://www.realvnc.com/dist/vnc-4.1.1-unixsrc.tar.gz,
http://www.realvnc.com/dist/vnc-4.1.2-unixsrc.tar.gz.

Gentoo just needs the direct download link only to upload the source on the
mirrors. Actually VNC 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 are only avalaible through a web browser,
and not using wget.

Do we have to stick with the 4.0 version? X.org 7.0 has just entered stable on
Gentoo, and it will be available in the 2006.1 install.

Thanks,

Dennis.

Can someone help please.

I require remote access software for my small business.

I am considering using the Free edition but I am not sure if it will offer
the two features that I am interested in, these are:

1)The abilitiy to remote access a customers PC and offer them technical

2)I require customers to be able to be able to view my PC screen so I can

Can you please advise if this is possible with the Free software.

unusable display

2005-11-18 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Dear all,

I have been using the free (as provided with RH9) server and it worked

great although the resolution was low (color would display fine

though) and security was bad. So I just purchased the VNC server and

installed it. All worked fine (had to remove old package first) but

when trying to connect with the server (using the Windows XP client) I

can get it but get an unusable screen. That is: purple background, I

can see the windows but no text. If I open a menu I can see the panel but
no text.

 I tried several things:

 (a) change color depth setting in XF86Config

 (b) tried all color settings on VNC client

 (c) contacted VNC support

 Any suggestions?

 Regards.

x0vncserver - Problem

2005-10-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I've run into the same problem... and I'm running the latest Fedora Core 4
release of vnc-server:

 rpm -qa | grep vnc
vnc-4.1.1-10.1
vnc-server-4.1.1-10.1

Going to the straight RealVNC release (vnc-4_1_1-1) works fine. Is there a
coordination between
Fedora and RealVNC - or is this strictly a Fedora issue??

It looks like you're running an older version of x0vncserver from somewhere.
Can you try running the VNC 4.1.1 version?

VNC server free edition 4.1.1 !!! Crash !!! (fwd)

2005-09-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi All,

I run this server in service mode and when I am conneced to server
and trying to move a window back to the screen - which is out of the screen
for some reason - server crashes.

I am using a terminal program (Century Term V 7.2) and its window
sometimes - I don't know why - goes out of screen and in a normal
case - when I am using it on a local PC - I can put it back to screen by a
right click on its taskbar icon and using 'move' menu and arrow keys.

But when I try to do it from other PC (connected to a PC with VNC
server) when I chose 'move' menu, connection freezes and I cannot
connect again.
On the target PC today I have found a standard window of Windows
(WinWnc4.exe application error 'memory cannot be read...') and service
did not work.

It happens on Win2k Prof and WinXP prof also.

Can anybody tell me is it a VNC bug or something else?

Best Regards,
Zoltan

As far as I know, the unix distribution has a separate tool to encode the
password. Pick that source and you have your example. It's possible a unix
specific library is used. You can find it in 'cygwin' for your M$Windows box.

Then you can update the encoded password in the registry. Remember, ther are 2
locations: user specific and/or system specific.

Re: display

Are there any plans for the viewer to be able to display via setting on the
viewer comp, that are not available on the server comp?

Well, the nature of VNC is that the server-side provides a (static) resolution.
Where VNC provides a view at the console (all M$Windows, some linux) there the
setting of the console also sets the vnc-server-side. As far as I know, the
vnc-server will reset if the console-geometry changes so the viewer must also be
restarted. On most unix and linux implementations, the resolution is set at
startup and cannot be changed on the fly.

The vncviewer only shows what the server offers and unfortunatly, once the
server resets, the viewer must also be restarted. So, no there is no easy way to
change the resolution on the fly.

On the viewer-side, there are 2 ways to change the display geometry (or better
said: viewport size): By default the view just is clipped around the edges,
scrollbars are provided to change the viewport. There are viewers that can
reduce the view by interleaving: the resolution of the same picture is changed
just as your picture viewer will resize.

So yes, vnc can change size, both on server as on client side. However, not the
way you like it...

Re: Using VNC with a Screen reader?

Hey all, I'm totally blind here, so therefore I use a screen reader to
access my PC. And I wanted to know if there are any scripts for JAWS for
windows, or set files for window-eyes for VNC to make it accessible, in
particular, the VNC viewer.

Dan,

I'm sorry I have to tell that VNC provides a fully graphical view of the remote
machine. It gives a screendump of the remote-side: just the pixels, no text
information or such. I donnot know how your screen-readers work but as far as I
know, they scan for character information in the screen buffer. Since the
display is only a bitmap, this text information is lost. You do need a character
recognition program to get the text from the vnc viewer.

If your can install a screen reader on the remote machine, you might be helped
with a vnc variant that also provides a sound channel. I donnot know details but
I do know there are more vnc variants around: For real-vnc I'm sure it does not
provide a sound-channel. You can try with tight-vnc, true-vnc or maybe others.

If your remote machine is a unix or linux based machine, I think you are better
helped with an X11 server on your desktop and use the X11 way to do remote
desktops. This might give hooks for your screen readers. If your desktop is also
unix or linux, just set the $DISPLAY variable on the remote system to your
desktop machine.

In service mode, most services are not started. Just start it and off you go. If
you want to start it automatically in service mode, peek at systemdocs on how to
do so. You can try to install it in service mode and see if that works.

Re: MPEG Pixel Encoder

2005-08-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Shane Walton wrote:

I have seen mention of MPEG as a pixel encoder for VNC, but
have not found any implementations.

It would seem that MPEG type encoding would be more
efficient than JPEG as MPEG counts for unchanged areas
where JPEG doesn't maintain any history of the previous
frame.

Does anybody see or know of a reason why MPEG encoding
hasn't been used by VNC implementations?

As far as I know, both mpeg and jpeg have no advantage for vnc as long as the
grapics are all computer graphics and no pictures or photographs or such.

The compression of mpeg and jpeg is verry good on pictures and photographs, at
the cost of some cpu-power. However, for computer graphics like windows and
such, the compression is verry poor. Not to mention the extreme loss of quality.
You can test this yourself by taking a screen-dump of this window (the one you
use to read this mail) and store it as a bitmap (*.bmp), a gif and a jpeg. Now
compare the file-size and view them. I bet the gif is smaller than the jpeg and
the readability of the jpeg is not that good...

The advantage of mpeg over jpeg is that it only sends the update of the screen
with every frame, just as vnc does by default. Hence no advantage for mpeg
there. The disadvantage for mpeg is that it must send a continuous streem (with
an entire picture once in a while!), where vnc only sends updates if ther are
updates.

Hence, except for handling pictures and photographs, jpeg is not usable for vnc.
Due to the continuous data stream, mpeg has no advantage for vnc either.

HOWEVER: If you like to make a demonstration, vnc can be an aid and it would be
nice if a session can be recorded and stored in some default video format. I
know there is such a thing around but I donnot have any ponters at hand. With
this tool, you can record a session and creat a video-stream out of it. As far
as I have peeked into this in the past, It acts as a vncviewer that records
everything it gets.

Howdy List Folks,

I'm running a RHEL3.x linux box and routing the Xvnc through xinetd,

viewer. I have been unable to discover any process for defining a
similar setup that will allow access from any browser using the JAVA
script plugin. Perhaps I have just missed it somewhere in the various
documentation sites.

- Is this possible?

Yes, I've done it.

- Is this already implemented somehow by my running Xvnc and I just
don't know how to access it? If so please advise.

The vnc-webserver is just serving the *.vnc files as html files with some
variables filled out. Carefully read this html-source and the source you get in
your vncsession-browser. Now you can fill out the 'variables' that are used and
create genuine html-files out of these files and feed them to a webserver on the
same machine.
If there is no webserver running on the machine, use a static vnc-session for
the job: just leave the files with their origionals in the same directory. If
http://vncserver.5900/; is then the other 'servers' are at
http://vncserver:5900/filename.html;.

Detail: you cannot use a webserver on an other machine due to security
restrictions in java. However, you can always create a page on any server that
refreshes itself to the preferred page.

- Is this a separate process that needs to be implemented? If so, any
direction to information/documentation appreciated.

no

Thanks,
Alan D.

You forgot to ask: Is it worth the hussle?.

Here I can answer NO. One (dis-)advantage of the inetd approach is that the
session is killed as soon as the connection is lost. If the browser moves to an
other page (or even a page-refresh!), the connection is lost and hence the
session is killed.

For unix (and linux) systems: VNC provides an X11-server with a virtual display.
This display can only be seen using the vnc-viewer.

For M$Windows (and some X11-servers): VNC provides a way to capture the display
at the console to view it with the vnc-viewer.

In all cases, the base VNC setting only provides KVM: Keyboard Video and Mouse.
No sound, no remote disks nothing else than kvm.

For the differences between pcAnywhere and vnc: vnc uses tcp/ip networking where
pcAnywhere can use other network connections like serial lines and such.

VNC has always provided the option to operate without requiring
authentication, there is no such thing as a RealVNC4 NULL
Session, and VNC has never used SSL encryption, so I'm afraid it
sounds like someone's been telling you porkies!

The output that you've included just seems to show that (assuming
passworded means was able to guess password) your VNC Servers
have been configured with poorly chosen passwords.

Of course, if you think you know of any viable attacks on VNC
servers then feel free to get in touch.

 Cheers,

 Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

?? ? wrote:

Is it possible to make the vnc as a standard service in linux?
My idea is :
1.as the system booting ,vnc service start up like other standard
service such as ssh,sendmail,
2.before a request comes ,the vnc service does not start any Xvnc
servers ,but only listens to a port (for example: 5900)

3.at the client side ,do :
 $  vncviewer xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -user username
4. the server side get the user name ,and start an Xvnc server for the
user,

There are various ways to do that. Several distributions have their own way to
implement something like that. See RedHat, Fedora and SuSE (and possibly others).

In the end, the inetd-approach comes most close to what you like: it starts Xvnc
in system space (not user-space) just as an other Xserver (just like Xorg or
Xfree)

In the past I pointed frequently to a page on sourcecodecorner dot com. This
site has gone down and spits windows and maybe even viri.

On http://www.realvnc.com/ are some hints and tips to setup the inetd way and
maybe even in the mail archives.

Only with xclipboard (nice thing) open, I can copy in WinXP and paste in

Why??
When I close xclipboard only copy in Linux and paste in WinXP works.
THis is due to the multiple buffers in X11 and the one that is used: There are
different buffers for cut-copy-paste and for selection. With X11, the default is
to use the selection buffer: Just select what you need and press the
middle-mouse button to paste. Works roughly everywhere (in X11).

With vnc, the selection buffer is copied between the sessions, not the copy
buffer. That is what you see withthe xclipboard application and thats an app to
work withboth if neded.

On most X11 systems, the buffers are copied as needed. However, Xvnc is just as
nice to not interfear with this and only use the select buffer. I think this has
changed between vnc3 and vnc4.

How do you paste in linux? If you use some edit-paste menu, try pasting
with
the middle mouse button. On vnc version 3, that was the way to paste.

Then, with `xclipboard`, you can see there is more than just one
clipboard in
X11 (linux, unix e.a.).

Finally there is some clipboard (cut, copy, paste) info in the
documentation on
the website. Some settings might offend you.

If you set your server in text-mode (`init 3` on most distro's) then it might
work. It is because `vncserver :0` tries to start an Xserver (e.g. Xvnc) at
display :0 but your machine already has an Xserver running at that display.

Any ideas?
Carefully check the documentation and your configuration and see if you can hook
up. It should work.

I'd begun to wonder if it was a CDE issue. I've tried an Openwindows

feeling my way around Solaris, so do suggest things that you think are
obvious!

Thanks,
Alasdair
I hope you can help, as google et. al have proved unable to!
I am running VNC4.0 on Solaris 8 (2/04), via inetd. My inetd.conf
line is thus:
vnc-1152x864x24 stream tcp nowait root /space/tools/bin/Xvnc Xvnc
-inetd -query localhost -once -geometry 1152x864 -depth 24
-SecurityTypes=None -desktop=baltar-Sol8 -fp tcp/baltar:7100

I can start a session via vncviewer, and get the CDE login prompt. I
can enter a username password, but then the VNCviewer window simply
disappears. vncviewer informs me end of stream and nothing else.
I've looked at /var/dt/Xerrors:
/usr/openwin/bin/xset: bad font path element (#38), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
Warning: Null child found in argumnet list to unmanage
dtlogin: recieved signal 11

This indicates CDE, which services your login is quitting, its not vnc
to blame for this, Xvnc just quits because it is instructed to do so
by dtlogin.
I don't think the fontpath is the problem, better look at the warning.
This all starts with a fontpatherror. IF it is just one of the
fontsdirectories
in your fontpath, it should not be a problem. However, if this leaves no fonts
left (all fontdirectories are wrong) then I can imagine there are problems.
Since your Xvnc call does not specify any fontpath, the windowmanager has to
come with one. If they don't, there are no fonts and the windowmanager might
have a problem here...
Try specifying a fontpath in the Xvnc-call, try the one you use on the console.

I've looked at the font path from xset -q, and all the dirs exist and
contain a fonts.dir. I've modified them all to be 777, so permissions
should be fine (they have 7x5 all the way down the path). I guess I'm

red hat install problems

2005-02-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I installed the vnc-4.0-1.i386.rpm

I verified it installed both with RPM and buy checking the files and
/usr/bin/Xvnc is there.

I can run vncserver and it creates the .vnc directory and the .log, .pid,
passwd and xstartup
files.

the log shows it is starting and listening on the standard ports.

I modified /etc/services to include a line for Xvnc on each port 5900-5901 and
5800-5801

But I still can't access it from outside.

What can I check next?

Re: Install VNC on Solar 2.6

2004-11-18 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Greetings,
I would like to install VNC on a Sun Spac Ultra 5
running Solaris 2.6. We use it as a network work
management station running HP Openview, which stays
active on the desktop always.
Not being very familiar with Solaris and considering
the importance of this management station, I want to
do my homework before trying to install VNC.

Well, you found the maillist. Scan the archive on SunOS and/or Solaris.
I recall one major flaw: the /tmp/X11... directory is to much
restrictive for vnc: Give the world read and write rights so Xvnc can
put its socket there.

Xvnc for Solaris is available and/or easy to build. I've used it ages
ago (in a previous job) without any problem.

The Sun runs on a local network, and I would like to
use VNC to connect into the Sun station and view the
running HP Openview session that is active on the
desktop.

?? You indicate the session at the console?? That depends on how that is
done. I don't recall there is a vnc-module to Xsun (suns X11 server) as
there is to xfree86 (nore do I recall such a mdule to HPs X11 server). I
bet all you can build for HP-UX is buildable on Solaris.

If you run XFree86 (4.x) on solaris, than the vnc-module should be
buildable and usable.

Can anyone provide some pointers for successful
installation of VNC on Solaris 2.6? Am trying to
avoid having much downtime.

Best to start with the default vncserver and get that going.
To have the same app in a vnc-session and on the console, start a
vnc-session that can be accessed with more viewers: See the Xvnc options
with `Xvnc --help`, provide that option to `vncserver`.

Now open a viewer on the console and on your destop and start the
application in that vnc-session and off you go.

This is not the best solution but it should get you going. the better
part is that the app runs in a vnc-session so the console can loggout too.

If someone has much experience with Solaris 2.6 and
VNC, it would be worth a couple of hours of consulting
to assist in the installation of VNC.
Thanks!

VNC4.0: Screensaver with password to lresume , VNCclient error read connection aborted (10053)

2004-06-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thunersee
Hy,
We use in LAN VNC4.0 Server on Win2000 and VNC4.0 Client on WinXP.

Cannot connect, if screensaver on Win2000 server has a password to resume.
Win2000 Sever terminate screensaver and prompt the win2000-login window.
Client gets error message: read connection aborted (10053).
No problem, if screensaver on Win2000 server has no password to resume.
What I have to configure on VNCserver? Or what on VNCclient?
Thanks for help.

java viewer and display :0

2004-05-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi All,

Suppose I am running a debian linux machine with KDE as the GUI, and
tightVNC. A friend is using the linux machine locally and I would like to
show them how to do something. I am on an arbitrary pc somewhere on the
network which may or may not have VNC veiwer installed, and may be any OS.
So I want to use the java viewer in a browser to access the :0 desktop so
that my friend can see what I am doing on their local screen and so learn
how to do whatever it is next time. I can use vnc viewer to do this, but
I've had no luck using the java viewer. I am trying name:5800 in the
browser. Anyone had any success with this? Should I use real VNC instead of
tightVNC?

How to set a timeout on Vncconnect?

2004-05-25 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Because I'm using xinetd and xdm, each time a user connect through xdm a new vnc
server will be started. That's why only one client can connect at a time. But then
other clients can join using vncconnect.

I managed to solve my problem by writing a python script which is testing port 5500 on
the computer potentialy runing the listening vncviewer. This is not the best solution
but it works. If anyone have an idea to improve the solution.

I can not use at and launch vncconnect, because if there is no listening viewer,
vncconnect freezes everything

import os,sys
import socket

serverHost = '192.168.1.100'

try:
  sockobj.connect((serverHost, serverPort))
  sockobj.close()
  os.system('%s %s' % (command,serverHost))
  sys.exit()

 Everything works fine.

The drawback of this technique is that only on client can connect on a display at a
 time. But

Not true. It's possible to connect simultaneously several clients/viewers to one
single server. You have to specify the option that you're using shared mode.

For your next question about timeout, sorry, I don't know. Hope someone else knows the
answer.

But I have an idea. Could you write a script to use the at command? In this way, I
think it's the system scheduler's job to run them in different processes.

Good luck

there is a workaround which works fine to connect additional users, which consists
 in using
 vncconnect. Additional users have vncvie
er who started a VNC display connects all the other users using vncconnect.

That's what I'm doing and it work sfine as well, except that if one of the users is
 not
connected or has not his vncviewer listening then vncconnect hang, everything is
 blocked.
Detaching the process with '' doesn't work.
I tried to wrap vncconnect in a python script and set a time delay before killing
 the process
 but it doesn't work either.

Does anyone has an idea on how to set a timeout on vncconnect?

Dear Christopher,

I back at work now and I just ran regedit,
In my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\ORL\WinVNC3\

It's a Win2000 Advanced Server machine, and I believe
I have administrator rights?

By default, WinVNC servers accept incoming connections on any network
adapter address, since this is the easiest way of coping with
multihomed machines. In some cases, it is preferable to listen only for
connections originating from the local machine and aimed at the
localhost adapter - a particular example is the use of VNC over SSH
to provide secure VNC. Setting this registry entry to 1 will cause
WinVNC to only accept local connections - this overrides the

Thanks all,

I should have read the documentation more carefully,
when I posted my question I thought the (linux)vncviewer
client blocked the connection, now I understand (hope) that
the vncserver at work blocked the connection, because it thought
the connection was coming from localhost...
This Monday I'll do the registry thing at work and try again.

Newbie question about connecting across a WAN

2003-11-25 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi -

I hope someone can help.
This is a newbie question, if the answer is obvious, please let me know.

I intend to install VPN as a way of adminstering friends PCs remotely.

My setup is

My computer (running the VPN server) - connected to a ADSL Modem
My friends computer(s) (client) - connected to a ADSL modem (or)
My friends computer(s) (client) - connected to a router - connected to ADSL

The question is - as the client PC is on a private network - the IP address
they setup could be anything.
How do I associate a public IP address for my client PC?

How do I use my ADSL connection to connect to another PC using ADSL (or
ISDN) - who do I contact to find or setup a public IP address.
And how does this work when there are several PCs at the remote location?

I would really apreciate any help on the matter.

Many thanks

Paul Middleton

See 'vncserver' script. There's default 'fp' setting somewhere.

Best to ask the X11 server at the console of the machine running vncserver.
Therefor, at the console type:
# xset -query
or
# xset -q

That lists the actual font path for that session. (if you change teh $DISPLAY
value to a working session and then use xset, you might also get it)

On some systems, you can als peek at what the X11 server at the console starts
with but that can be changed on login.

Once you have something that should work, you can test on the fly with the
`xset` command while working in a vnc session. See `man xset` for some hints on
how to operate the fontpath with that.

RE: Lost cursor / arrow control in dos box

2003-07-02 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Craig,

To me the biggest advantages of UltraVNC are that it :
- Can transfer files from one computer to the other.
- Can capture one window and only show that window.
- Allows to turn of the remote screen while you are working.

Although these benefits have some drawbacks
- The file transfer capability should include multiple file delete, cut and paste with
Ctrl-C/V (I used to use PC Anywhere and that has quite good control over file handling)
- When you capture one window it tends to be repositioned on the screen of the remote
computer.
Anyhow nothing that bothers me a lot, just pointing out that improvement is always
possible.

Secure tunneling ought to be included as wel as described a couple of days ago in
ZVNC. (A long standing problem with manny people if you follow the list).

It would be great if all the efforts of the different versions of VNC would be put
together in one application.

In anny case, I have used UltraVNC for the last 4 weeks and it has never failed me.
I intend to put what I described earlier in a more detailed list once I have more
experience with the product so that the developers can turn it into an even better
product.

Regards,
Edwin

Apologies to the list up front if this is a old issue.
I've gone through the last 4 months of archives and have not
seen this specific issue. I'm still digging further back

We are using (windows) VNC Host ver. 3.3.6 and client 3.3.7
to connect 2 windows machines to each other. If we get the
kinks worked out, the normal setup will be a win 98 box
controlling the win2k box (home to office).

The Windows 2000 Pro box is the VNC host. It runs an old
FoxPro database in an MS Dos window. The app runs fine
but we can't seem to get the arrow (left, right, up, down) or
page up / page down keys to work correctly.

I've tried all the tricks I know. I believe it has something to
do with the way FoxPro is manipulating the screen. In just
a plain old dos box, I can get the cursor keys to work fine
under VNC. Once we launch the FoxPro app, the cursor
keys seem to stop functioning.

If you have any ideas or hints, I'd be really grateful.
thx

Re: Witch is the Best

2003-06-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Reto,

As far as I have been able to conclude the thing is as follows :
- RealVNC is the original thing.
- TightVNC added functionality to RealVNC by modifiyng the source code, especially
regarding compressing data end sending information quicker over your connection. The
latest RealVNC is considered to be faster since a new compression was included.

81% system resources free is extremely low for a 384Mb machine that's not
even running anything. Having said that, Windows 98 is particularly bad at
dealing with large amounts of RAM.

Having no virtual memory configured is also a bad idea with Windows 98. I
have no idea as to the reasons behind that, but it seems to really badly
affect performance in many cases.

since 5 days, system is restored in original state. (compaq evo

Strange. 5-day old installation should be OK. Are you installing standard
Windows 98, Windows 98SE, or a Compaq OEM'd version of Windows 98?

Herectics?

2002-12-19 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Gentlemen Developers of real, tight and ultra (please note in
alphabetical order):

I do not know, whether its the right time now to pick a quarrell but as
an observer of the three lists for a year or so (as it applies) and as a
user of different flavours of vnc I would like to state a few
observations which I believe to have made particularly during the last
few months (and certainly they are not at all ingeniously new). I do not
wish to touch at any sensitivies of you developers or reduce the
diversity of directions open software has as one of its major
advantages. Nor do I want to involve in sophisticated debate (which may,
however, be required) about the advantage of development in one or the
other direction.

HOWEVER:

Observation 1:
An increading conversion process in the development of the tree flavours
can be observed each borrowing from the other, which to me indicates
increasing maturity of the underlying product. It can even be traced
down during the last few months, that a fundamental feature frequently
requested and heavily disputed in the lists (such as file transfer) now,
from esvnc embedded in ultra now is announced to become shortly
available in tight. Other features such as port definitions for the
listening daemon as in real are available in tight and ultra. Port/or
Display specification is said to become available in ultra as it is in
tight (we all know the never ending repetition in the of how-to compute
the display number from the complement ... to set eg. port 80) - Not
to mention visibility of the remote cursor. This conversion goes to the
extend that, at least seemingly, comments/questions/requests are send to
the wrong list in some cases

Observation 2
While merging these features from one flavour into the other, features
inclusion is not synchronized resulting in the situation, that one
feature you appreciate is not (yet) included in an another flavour which
might require both running two flavours at the same time and/or
extensively testing compatibility among server/viewer flavours. Not to
speak of inconsistent syntax (within and/or between) different flavours
(see eg. port definitions with :: or :)

Observation 3
In fact there appears to be substantial progress being made at the
different deeveloper groups in different areas, VDAC in ultra, to only
quote one of the most recent which to me appears as such, much the same
as as most recent and apparrently not yet finally resolved NT
authentication, while inclusion of other achievements in other flavours
lags behind (see Observation 2)

I am fully aware that even (or excatly?) in open software environments
competion for market share fosters progress in features and quality.
But one could equally argue that (last but not least for the benefit of
the users) it might be an idea to join faculty and resources in
different areas of competence rather than to cut after one another.

Altogether (and provided it is true that vnc in its core and
traditional features is mature in the positive sense) it is my
impression, that such joining of competence may result in major leaps
forward in the areas mentioned above but also including streaming video
audio and other not currently being thought of. I do say so knowing (?)
the current main areas of application, but also anticipating the large
potential. I do say so in view of the sometimes heavily debated list of
necessary features, which eventually are included in flavours where
they were not intended to be.
I am also fully aware of the overhead when spreading development accross
the world but there may also be a trade-off worth considering in feature
richness, consistency, usabilty, quality and many alikes.

Blame me, pounce on me, fly at me if I incite a debate that has been
closed prior to my arrival, if I missed the boat, if these are
improprieties, unnecessarily kicking of a row. But finally - it is only
a question

Cheers,
Dietmar

better. What is nice is having a choice. It would be great that
common API

three+
teams to work out, so all can inter-work.

The impression I get is that whilst the originial VNC programmers
(now RealVNC) knew how to do cross-platform development. The
forks seem mostly to be by windows programmers who don't have
experience of maintaining a cross platform codebase and have only
produced windows versions. Of course, many of the improvements
in these forks are uniquely tied to windows (the video driver,
for example) and aren't suitable for other platforms. But in
doing this, I think they've broken the USP of VNC, ie the abstraction
away from the OS and the excellent cross-platform connectivity.

Just my 2p, not a flame.

Viewer -listen port

2002-11-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi all,
From the web I learned that starting version 3.3.5 the server as an
option in add client to specifiy a port other than 5500
I know how to change the SERVERs listening port but, while parsing the
archives / docs I haven't found how to change the port for the VIEWERS
listening daemon, rather that it be hardwired to 5400/5500. It would be
cute to be able to change this, because to support ignorant users on
a dynamic IP it would be easier to add a fixed IP client rather than
to have them find their IP - and for firewall reasons I cannot use 5500.
Am I missing something - any trial and error fails on w2k/w2k
server/viewer boxes? I know how to change the server
Anyone's got a clue?

SSH woes

2002-11-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hate to ask this on here since its more SSH related then VNC
but here is the story:

2 Windows 2000 pro boxes, separated by a NAT type firewall.

SSH server ( currently SSH.com, until it expires then i have
to find a free server ) and SSH client ( also from SSH.com ).

SSH shell thru firewall works. SSH File transfer works.

On client config: forward port 5900 ( correct port for my setup
at home ).

On work pc ( SSH client ), connect to localhost:0, but i never get the
password prompt back from home machine ( SSH server ). No
errors, no time outs, nothin just dead air.

Everything works fine on each respective network, so its
the tunneling that is the issue..

Anyone got a clue? + advice on a useable free SSH server
for windows.. ( off list replies are ok to keep the static down )

So, are you saying that the clock in the system tray is keeping the system
from timing out?

Andy Harter writes:
The semantics of IdleTimeout are currently to disconnect only if there are
input events or update requests from the viewer. If you have a clock
updating in the taskbar, for example, nothing more than a minute will have

It would be possible to add more control to what IdleTimeout means, will
consider it for a future release.

Re: Local printing with VNC

2002-10-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
No it wouldn't be a useful feature to bloat up VNC with it,
as any real OS supports print re-direction. There is no
need to duplicate services.

Same goes for file transfer. Or sound, or or or..

Will this basic thread of destroying what VNC is designed

Its designed for MULITPLATFORM REMOTE CONTROL. Period.
Nothing more, nothing less. And does a good job of it as well.

Often it would be nice to be able to use a local printer to print copies
of
documents in the remote system. Is there any work being done to create a

a

Re: Sound Support

2002-10-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I vote NO.. ( yes i know it wasn't a poll )

Why you ask? Because it starts to get out of what VNC is designed for, and
its a slippery slope.. before long we will end up with a 20mb install file
and
require 128mb of ram to run.

Its designed to be a small multi-platform utility for remote
control/viewing. Lets
not loose sight of that, and just improve that functionality.. ( if there is
much more
that can be done to improve it.. )

Now.. a code fork into a project to develop something that has everything
+ the kitchen sink isn't a problem, as it would have its place in life.

Just please dont do that to the base VNC and destroy it.

We have experimented with adding sound to VNC in the past.

There are some interesting questions. Uni-directional, or bi-directional?
 Behaviour with multiple clients?

There are lots of features which are requested, and some which will be
added. However, we have to watch the code budget carefully if we are to
 avoid bloatware.

It is certainly on the list of possibilities.

2002-10-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Just to clarify, I'm big on personal rights and freedom ( being
here in America and watching it slowly dwindle away is
frustrating )

But i also realize where those freedoms stop.

In a business, personal freedoms dont apply once you walk
in the door.

It is the companies building, equipment etc. and they are paying
you to work for them, not for ANY personal activities.

Plus the users WERE informed of the random auditing will take
place.. Nothing was 'hidden' from them before they hired on
and AGREED to the rules here... ( i didn't make them, i just
enforce them ).

Same goes for drug tests, GPS style ID badges, cameras in the halls,
parking lots, guard at the door, etc.. while at work you dont have the same
'rights' as you do in public or home. its a legal fact of life. Its also a
choice
you make before you work for a company.

Now.. once i walk out the door.. that is a different story.

oh.. and what's a 'stage police'??? A typo perhaps?

Can anyone please give me a not-too-technical suggestion, as I'm not up on

Here's the deal: I installed VNC on my computer, which runs Windows 98 and
has a cable internet connection. I then went to a friend's house, and we
installed it on his computer, which also has Windows 98 and a cable
internet
connection. I was able to access my computer several times and it worked
beautifully each time, opened programs, etc.

Then, the next time I tried to access it, I got the Failed to connect to
server message, and have gotten it every time since. The only thing I
changed was that I went to full-screen the last time it connected
 successfully.

We went to a third location with another Windows 98 computer with a DSL
connection, installed the software, and couldn't access either of the two
computers, getting the same failed to connect to server message each
time.
I finally went home and tried to access the other two from my computer and
 got the same message.

What puzzles me is that it worked so perfectly several times, and then not
at all. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but nothing changed. Is
there
anything else I can do, or should I just give up?

VNC requires TCP/IP to work. I assume you use your Win2k machine to

RE: Any way to have VNC with multi-users/sessions on windows?

2002-08-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What you want to do is make 'pro' appear to be TS, and
it CAN be done, ( and no i wont tell you how, as technically
that's violating the DMCA and i goto jail.. ) but, it would
be totally illegal with all of Microsoft's new rules..

Citrix does support most currently used platforms..

On a side note, personally I'm surprised they allow things
such as Citrix to exist.. Prolly wont much longer since
they have nothing to fear..

I am reposting this because no-one replied, and I think it's a question
that a lot of people would like answered.
I want to use the VNC java applet client to allow access to multiple
Windows 2000 Terminal Services sessions via the web. I could do this
with the Terminal Services Advanced Client Active X control on a web
page, but I would like for the users to be able to use any browser/OS,
not just IE/Win. I know I could pay for Tarantella, Citrix, or HOBLink
JWT but that will get expensive, and why pay if VNC can do it free?
The FAQ at www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ states that VNC can be used
with separate VNC servers running in each terminal server session, but
that the VNC clients don't update unless they also have a WTS client (I
assume they meant on the client computer, not within the TS session).
Has anyone attempted to run both a VNC server and client within each WTS
session and then accessing them via the java applet client? Or has
anyone found any way to use the VNC or TightVNC java clients to access
multiple Terminal Services sessions? Or, do you know of a java client
for WTS/Remote Desktop Protocol, like HOBLink JWT, but free? Thanks,
Ralph Smorra.

Discontinued Win2k

2002-07-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Pro is no longer a product, since it was replaced with XP.
So you cant sell it unless you have a special agreement with
MS ( like we do, but we are HUGE , 100k+ machines ) but
of course, that will stop soon and besides, new machines wont
have drier support for 2k..

Server is still available, until *.NET is released. then I'm sure
about 6 months later Server 2k will also not be a 'non product'.

Its just normal practice, put out new versions, then remove
the previous from the shelves.. ( oh and change the license
so its more restrictive on the new stuff :P )

tell me the truth, id wanna see for myself..

Just read thru for yourself, its not THAT big of a program...

Dear All,

I heard from somewhere that VNC has a backdoor password.
I just curious, is it true or not?
If it is true, then can we disable this backdoor password?

I have VNC installed on some machine and I am afraid if
somebody accessing that machine from outside.

Thank you

RE: Headless booting

2002-07-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Most new machines, you can disable it in the Bios setup..

Black-box used to sell stuff like what you are talking about for
older machines, or stubborn new ones... I dont think it was as
complex as an ASIC chip, just a couple of resistors to simulate
a load.. though i could be wrong..

( btw, id call no monitor headless.. in case you search on line
and get only video hits.. thats why.. )

Ok, I'm going out of my mind over here trying to find something I saw on
the
internet about a year ago. I'm hoping some of you have also seen it.

It plugs into you keyboard port and gives the computer proper signaling,
tricking the computer into thinking there is a keyboard connected. They
made
a similar adaptor for the mouse port. I'm not looking for a KVM switch.

All it was only a keyboard asic soldered onto the end of a keyboard
connector. But it worked great.

Some machines (most) require a keyboard to be connected. I want to setup an
array of VNC machines, and get rid of the keyboards and mice.

RE: Problem with 3.3.3r9 and Win98SE - no icon in taskbar

2002-07-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

( original was pretty clear, no need to copy it )

I have noticed the same problem but only with SE.. Id say its
might be bug. But i cant prove it either way, so ive never submitted it.

I never did get a work around.. sometimes nothing seemed to work
to get it to show.

Though actually at work i preferred it that way, less confusion
for my users. ' what's this icon, bla bla'. And no, i dont want to get
into the 'legality discussion' of long ago, my users signed the agreement,
and were told upfront that monitoring occurred on a regular / random basis.
Not that it really did beyond daily web logs, but it covered us for when it
was necessary to do more..

RE : VNC On Terminal Server - URGENT HELP Pl.

2002-06-21 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

That's the way VNC works with windows, it only attaches
to an active 'screen'.

If you can have a person login as root on the console and
run vnc you would have the same sort of access as you are
looking for i think.

But running VNC as a service on TS wont really work
as there isn't a 'screen' to connect too..( unless someone
has made changes in Xvnc that I'm unaware of )

Unix is different of course..

As a side note I've done remote access to TS via dialup
and not had any problems. i bet its not a TS 'bug' as you
suggest but something more related to the RAS side of
things..

 Hi,

Am having trouble accessing one of the Windows Terminal Server via
VNC.We hv a customer request for installing Apps on a Terminal Server
 the
connectivity is by a dialup to that server. Unfortunately the terminal
server logoffs after sometime our installtion aborts. (We suspect
 Terminal Server prob
also that there might be a bug in installing Apps via terminal server)

Hence we proposed to hv a VNC access to that terminal server, but now it
appears that the VNC is looking up the Terminal Server Display itself
am unable to get the screen display via VNC unless I have the Terminal
Client window (with the Terminal Server Session) opened on my PC at the
same time, By this am back to square one of logoff issue unsuccessfull
 installation.

Is there a way wherein I can hv a direct VNC Access to the Terminal
server. Can you kindly let me as to how to go about resolving this
 problem?

 Thanks Regards
 Girish

Small request to new users

2002-06-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Ever since that story ran on slashdot, our little community has
exploded.

Seems that every day I'm now flooded with people asking rather
basic questions ( or clueless on fundamental IP network function ) that
would be answered if 5 minutes were taken just to glance over the
docs.

I realize not every question is answered there, but come on people,
at least TRY to make an effort before you come crying to the list.
When its not found in the docs/FAQ/listsearch THEN come and ask
the group for help..

If its to much to ask to READ a little, perhaps you shouldn't be playing
with things that are out of your league?

For the new people that are out there and ARE doing their homework
first, welcome and thanks for not bothering us with noise.

Sorry for the rant but this is getting silly...

[VNC] Virus in list, java viewer for Xinit

2002-05-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Donno if I'm the only one, but edition #5 was tagged
as a virus.

It was deleted to fast to catch its name..

Back to a VNC subject, wondering if there is a way
to use the embedded HTTP/Java client when you
run Xvnc as a service?

This way i wont need to carry around the client disk
to get to my linux box. ( running 3 different resolutions
on 3 ports, i hit the respective port depending on the
local workstations capilbities. )

Or do i just need to offer the client via apache or
something, then point it to the proper port for
the resolution i want?
