Direct download link for VNC 4.1.2 Unix source
Hello, I'm doing an updated ebuild for Gentoo using modular X.org 7.0 for VNC 4.1.2. The question is that Gentoo needs a direct download link for the source. The actual ebuild in the distribution is using 4.0 version, available from http://www.realvnc.com/dist/vnc-4.0-unixsrc.tar.gz. But newer versions, like 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 aren't available at the following URL's: http://www.realvnc.com/dist/vnc-4.1.1-unixsrc.tar.gz, http://www.realvnc.com/dist/vnc-4.1.2-unixsrc.tar.gz. Gentoo just needs the direct download link only to upload the source on the mirrors. Actually VNC 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 are only avalaible through a web browser, and not using wget. Do we have to stick with the 4.0 version? X.org 7.0 has just entered stable on Gentoo, and it will be available in the 2006.1 install. Thanks, Dennis. unusable display
Dear all, I have been using the free (as provided with RH9) server and it worked great although the resolution was low (color would display fine though) and security was bad. So I just purchased the VNC server and installed it. All worked fine (had to remove old package first) but when trying to connect with the server (using the Windows XP client) I can get it but get an unusable screen. That is: purple background, I can see the windows but no text. If I open a menu I can see the panel but no text. I tried several things: (a) change color depth setting in XF86Config (b) tried all color settings on VNC client (c) contacted VNC support Any suggestions? Regards. VNC server free edition 4.1.1 !!! Crash !!! (fwd)
Hi All, I run this server in service mode and when I am conneced to server and trying to move a window back to the screen - which is out of the screen for some reason - server crashes. I am using a terminal program (Century Term V 7.2) and its window sometimes - I don't know why - goes out of screen and in a normal case - when I am using it on a local PC - I can put it back to screen by a right click on its taskbar icon and using 'move' menu and arrow keys. But when I try to do it from other PC (connected to a PC with VNC server) when I chose 'move' menu, connection freezes and I cannot connect again. On the target PC today I have found a standard window of Windows (WinWnc4.exe application error 'memory cannot be read...') and service did not work. It happens on Win2k Prof and WinXP prof also. Can anybody tell me is it a VNC bug or something else? Re: set password by code
Max Odendahl wrote: Hi, I am installing vnc with a self created inno setup installation, and would like to not only set custom ports, but also a password. How can I write the password directly into the registry, how to encrypt it correctly? As far as I know, the unix distribution has a separate tool to encode the password. Pick that source and you have your example. It's possible a unix specific library is used. You can find it in 'cygwin' for your M$Windows box. Then you can update the encoded password in the registry. Remember, ther are 2 locations: user specific and/or system specific. Re: display
Rabinowitz, Ethan wrote: The perfect setting for the computer I use the viewer on is 1280 x 960, but the only video settings when using my viewer comp, are the settings for the server comp (which does not have 1280x960 as an option). Are there any plans for the viewer to be able to display via setting on the viewer comp, that are not available on the server comp? Well, the nature of VNC is that the server-side provides a (static) resolution. Where VNC provides a view at the console (all M$Windows, some linux) there the setting of the console also sets the vnc-server-side. As far as I know, the vnc-server will reset if the console-geometry changes so the viewer must also be restarted. On most unix and linux implementations, the resolution is set at startup and cannot be changed on the fly. The vncviewer only shows what the server offers and unfortunatly, once the server resets, the viewer must also be restarted. So, no there is no easy way to change the resolution on the fly. On the viewer-side, there are 2 ways to change the display geometry (or better said: viewport size): By default the view just is clipped around the edges, scrollbars are provided to change the viewport. There are viewers that can reduce the view by interleaving: the resolution of the same picture is changed just as your picture viewer will resize. So yes, vnc can change size, both on server as on client side. However, not the way you like it... Re: Using VNC with a Screen reader?
Dan wrote: Hey all, I'm totally blind here, so therefore I use a screen reader to access my PC. And I wanted to know if there are any scripts for JAWS for windows, or set files for window-eyes for VNC to make it accessible, in particular, the VNC viewer. Dan, I'm sorry I have to tell that VNC provides a fully graphical view of the remote machine. It gives a screendump of the remote-side: just the pixels, no text information or such. I donnot know how your screen-readers work but as far as I know, they scan for character information in the screen buffer. Since the display is only a bitmap, this text information is lost. You do need a character recognition program to get the text from the vnc viewer. If your can install a screen reader on the remote machine, you might be helped with a vnc variant that also provides a sound channel. I donnot know details but I do know there are more vnc variants around: For real-vnc I'm sure it does not provide a sound-channel. You can try with tight-vnc, true-vnc or maybe others. If your remote machine is a unix or linux based machine, I think you are better helped with an X11 server on your desktop and use the X11 way to do remote desktops. This might give hooks for your screen readers. If your desktop is also unix or linux, just set the $DISPLAY variable on the remote system to your desktop machine. Re: MPEG Pixel Encoder
Shane Walton wrote: I have seen mention of MPEG as a pixel encoder for VNC, but have not found any implementations. It would seem that MPEG type encoding would be more efficient than JPEG as MPEG counts for unchanged areas where JPEG doesn't maintain any history of the previous frame. Does anybody see or know of a reason why MPEG encoding hasn't been used by VNC implementations? As far as I know, both mpeg and jpeg have no advantage for vnc as long as the grapics are all computer graphics and no pictures or photographs or such. The compression of mpeg and jpeg is verry good on pictures and photographs, at the cost of some cpu-power. However, for computer graphics like windows and such, the compression is verry poor. Not to mention the extreme loss of quality. You can test this yourself by taking a screen-dump of this window (the one you use to read this mail) and store it as a bitmap (*.bmp), a gif and a jpeg. Now compare the file-size and view them. I bet the gif is smaller than the jpeg and the readability of the jpeg is not that good... The advantage of mpeg over jpeg is that it only sends the update of the screen with every frame, just as vnc does by default. Hence no advantage for mpeg there. The disadvantage for mpeg is that it must send a continuous streem (with an entire picture once in a while!), where vnc only sends updates if ther are updates. Hence, except for handling pictures and photographs, jpeg is not usable for vnc. Due to the continuous data stream, mpeg has no advantage for vnc either. HOWEVER: If you like to make a demonstration, vnc can be an aid and it would be nice if a session can be recorded and stored in some default video format. I know there is such a thing around but I donnot have any ponters at hand. With this tool, you can record a session and creat a video-stream out of it. As far as I have peeked into this in the past, It acts as a vncviewer that records everything it gets. Re: JAVA/Browser access to Linus via xinetd?
Alan A. Dunwell wrote: Howdy List Folks, I'm running a RHEL3.x linux box and routing the Xvnc through xinetd, RedHat's version of inetd. This all works well for access with a VNC viewer. I have been unable to discover any process for defining a similar setup that will allow access from any browser using the JAVA script plugin. Perhaps I have just missed it somewhere in the various documentation sites. - Is this possible? Yes, I've done it. - Is this already implemented somehow by my running Xvnc and I just don't know how to access it? If so please advise. The vnc-webserver is just serving the *.vnc files as html files with some variables filled out. Carefully read this html-source and the source you get in your vncsession-browser. Now you can fill out the 'variables' that are used and create genuine html-files out of these files and feed them to a webserver on the same machine. If there is no webserver running on the machine, use a static vnc-session for the job: just leave the files with their origionals in the same directory. If http://vncserver.5900/; is then the other 'servers' are at http://vncserver:5900/filename.html;. Detail: you cannot use a webserver on an other machine due to security restrictions in java. However, you can always create a page on any server that refreshes itself to the preferred page. - Is this a separate process that needs to be implemented? If so, any direction to information/documentation appreciated. no Thanks, Alan D. You forgot to ask: Is it worth the hussle?. Here I can answer NO. One (dis-)advantage of the inetd approach is that the session is killed as soon as the connection is lost. If the browser moves to an other page (or even a page-refresh!), the connection is lost and hence the session is killed. CBee !Reply to: ! Alan A. Dunwell ! JILA Software Manager ! JILA - CB440 ! For unix (and linux) systems: VNC provides an X11-server with a virtual display. This display can only be seen using the vnc-viewer. For M$Windows (and some X11-servers): VNC provides a way to capture the display at the console to view it with the vnc-viewer. In all cases, the base VNC setting only provides KVM: Keyboard Video and Mouse. No sound, no remote disks nothing else than kvm. Re: make the vnc as a standard service in linux
?? ? wrote: Is it possible to make the vnc as a standard service in linux? My idea is : 1.as the system booting ,vnc service start up like other standard service such as ssh, sendmail, 2.before a request comes ,the vnc service does not start any Xvnc servers ,but only listens to a port (for example: 5900) 3.at the client side ,do : $ vncviewer xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -user username 4. the server side get the user name ,and start an Xvnc server for the user, There are various ways to do that. Several distributions have their own way to implement something like that. See RedHat, Fedora and SuSE (and possibly others). In the end, the inetd-approach comes most close to what you like: it starts Xvnc in system space (not user-space) just as an other Xserver (just like Xorg or Xfree) In the past I pointed frequently to a page on sourcecodecorner dot com. This site has gone down and spits windows and maybe even viri. On http://www.realvnc.com/ are some hints and tips to setup the inetd way and maybe even in the mail archives. Di Pietro, Fabio VSD wrote: CBee Only with xclipboard (nice thing) open, I can copy in WinXP and paste in Linux. Why?? When I close xclipboard only copy in Linux and paste in WinXP works. THis is due to the multiple buffers in X11 and the one that is used: There are different buffers for cut-copy-paste and for selection. With X11, the default is to use the selection buffer: Just select what you need and press the middle-mouse button to paste. Works roughly everywhere (in X11). With vnc, the selection buffer is copied between the sessions, not the copy buffer. That is what you see withthe xclipboard application and thats an app to work withboth if neded. On most X11 systems, the buffers are copied as needed. However, Xvnc is just as nice to not interfear with this and only use the select buffer. I think this has changed between vnc3 and vnc4. I don't think the fontpath is the problem, better look at the warning. This all starts with a fontpatherror. IF it is just one of the fontsdirectories in your fontpath, it should not be a problem. However, if this leaves no fonts left (all fontdirectories are wrong) then I can imagine there are problems. Since your Xvnc call does not specify any fontpath, the windowmanager has to come with one. If they don't, there are no fonts and the windowmanager might have a problem here... Try specifying a fontpath in the Xvnc-call, try the one you use on the console. Re: Install VNC on Solar 2.6
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Greetings, I would like to install VNC on a Sun Spac Ultra 5 running Solaris 2.6. We use it as a network work management station running HP Openview, which stays active on the desktop always. Not being very familiar with Solaris and considering the importance of this management station, I want to do my homework before trying to install VNC. Well, you found the maillist. Scan the archive on SunOS and/or Solaris. I recall one major flaw: the /tmp/X11... directory is to much restrictive for vnc: Give the world read and write rights so Xvnc can put its socket there. Xvnc for Solaris is available and/or easy to build. I've used it ages ago (in a previous job) without any problem. The Sun runs on a local network, and I would like to use VNC to connect into the Sun station and view the running HP Openview session that is active on the desktop. ?? You indicate the session at the console?? That depends on how that is done. I don't recall there is a vnc-module to Xsun (suns X11 server) as there is to xfree86 (nore do I recall such a mdule to HPs X11 server). I bet all you can build for HP-UX is buildable on Solaris. If you run XFree86 (4.x) on solaris, than the vnc-module should be buildable and usable. Can anyone provide some pointers for successful installation of VNC on Solaris 2.6? Am trying to avoid having much downtime. Best to start with the default vncserver and get that going. To have the same app in a vnc-session and on the console, start a vnc-session that can be accessed with more viewers: See the Xvnc options with `Xvnc --help`, provide that option to `vncserver`. Now open a viewer on the console and on your destop and start the application in that vnc-session and off you go. This is not the best solution but it should get you going. the better part is that the app runs in a vnc-session so the console can loggout too. If someone has much experience with Solaris 2.6 and VNC, it would be worth a couple of hours of consulting to assist in the installation of VNC. Thanks! How to set a timeout on Vncconnect?
I set on my Linux Debian 3.0 box a system with VNC, xinetd and XDM. Everything works fine. The drawback of this technique is that only on client can connect on a display at a time. But there is a workaround which works fine to connect additional users, which consists in using vncconnect. Additional users have vncviewer running on their computer and listening. The first user who started a VNC display connects all the other users using vncconnect. Newbie question about connecting across a WAN
Hi - I hope someone can help. This is a newbie question, if the answer is obvious, please let me know. I intend to install VPN as a way of adminstering friends PCs remotely. My setup is My computer (running the VPN server) - connected to a ADSL Modem My friends computer(s) (client) - connected to a ADSL modem (or) My friends computer(s) (client) - connected to a router - connected to ADSL The question is - as the client PC is on a private network - the IP address they setup could be anything. How do I associate a public IP address for my client PC? How do I use my ADSL connection to connect to another PC using ADSL (or ISDN) - who do I contact to find or setup a public IP address. And how does this work when there are several PCs at the remote location? I would really apreciate any help on the matter. RE: Lost cursor / arrow control in dos box
Craig, To me the biggest advantages of UltraVNC are that it : - Can transfer files from one computer to the other. - Can capture one window and only show that window. - Allows to turn of the remote screen while you are working. Although these benefits have some drawbacks - The file transfer capability should include multiple file delete, cut and paste with Ctrl-C/V (I used to use PC Anywhere and that has quite good control over file handling) - When you capture one window it tends to be repositioned on the screen of the remote computer. Anyhow nothing that bothers me a lot, just pointing out that improvement is always possible. Secure tunneling ought to be included as wel as described a couple of days ago in ZVNC. (A long standing problem with manny people if you follow the list). It would be great if all the efforts of the different versions of VNC would be put together in one application. In anny case, I have used UltraVNC for the last 4 weeks and it has never failed me. I intend to put what I described earlier in a more detailed list once I have more experience with the product so that the developers can turn it into an even better product. Herectics?
Gentlemen Developers of real, tight and ultra (please note in alphabetical order): I do not know, whether its the right time now to pick a quarrell but as an observer of the three lists for a year or so (as it applies) and as a user of different flavours of vnc I would like to state a few observations which I believe to have made particularly during the last few months (and certainly they are not at all ingeniously new). I do not wish to touch at any sensitivies of you developers or reduce the diversity of directions open software has as one of its major advantages. Nor do I want to involve in sophisticated debate (which may, however, be required) about the advantage of development in one or the other direction. HOWEVER: Observation 1: An increading conversion process in the development of the tree flavours can be observed each borrowing from the other, which to me indicates increasing maturity of the underlying product. It can even be traced down during the last few months, that a fundamental feature frequently requested and heavily disputed in the lists (such as file transfer) now, from esvnc embedded in ultra now is announced to become shortly available in tight. Other features such as port definitions for the listening daemon as in real are available in tight and ultra. Port/or Display specification is said to become available in ultra as it is in tight (we all know the never ending repetition in the of how-to compute the display number from the complement ... to set eg. port 80) - Not to mention visibility of the remote cursor. This conversion goes to the extend that, at least seemingly, comments/questions/requests are send to the wrong list in some cases Observation 2 While merging these features from one flavour into the other, features inclusion is not synchronized resulting in the situation, that one feature you appreciate is not (yet) included in an another flavour which might require both running two flavours at the same time and/or extensively testing compatibility among server/viewer flavours. Not to speak of inconsistent syntax (within and/or between) different flavours (see eg. port definitions with :: or :) Observation 3 In fact there appears to be substantial progress being made at the different deeveloper groups in different areas, VDAC in ultra, to only quote one of the most recent which to me appears as such, much the same as as most recent and apparrently not yet finally resolved NT authentication, while inclusion of other achievements in other flavours lags behind (see Observation 2) I am fully aware that even (or excatly?) in open software environments competion for market share fosters progress in features and quality. But one could equally argue that (last but not least for the benefit of the users) it might be an idea to join faculty and resources in different areas of competence rather than to cut after one another. Altogether (and provided it is true that vnc in its core and traditional features is mature in the positive sense) it is my impression, that such joining of competence may result in major leaps forward in the areas mentioned above but also including streaming video audio and other not currently being thought of. I do say so knowing (?) the current main areas of application, but also anticipating the large potential. I do say so in view of the sometimes heavily debated list of necessary features, which eventually are included in flavours where they were not intended to be. I am also fully aware of the overhead when spreading development accross the world but there may also be a trade-off worth considering in feature richness, consistency, usabilty, quality and many alikes. Blame me, pounce on me, fly at me if I incite a debate that has been closed prior to my arrival, if I missed the boat, if these are improprieties, unnecessarily kicking of a row. The forks seem mostly to be by windows programmers who don't have experience of maintaining a cross platform codebase and have only produced windows versions. Of course, many of the improvements in these forks are uniquely tied to windows (the video driver, for example) and aren't suitable for other platforms. Viewer -listen port
Hi all, From the web I learned that starting version 3.3.5 the server as an option in add client to specifiy a port other than 5500 I know how to change the SERVERs listening port but, while parsing the archives / docs I haven't found how to change the port for the VIEWERS listening daemon, rather that it be hardwired to 5400/5500. It would be cute to be able to change this, because to support ignorant users on a dynamic IP it would be easier to add a fixed IP client rather than to have them find their IP - and for firewall reasons I cannot use 5500. Am I missing something - any trial and error fails on w2k/w2k server/viewer boxes? I know how to change the server Anyone's got a clue? SSH woes
Hate to ask this on here since its more SSH related then VNC but here is the story: 2 Windows 2000 pro boxes, separated by a NAT type firewall. SSH server ( currently SSH.com, until it expires then i have to find a free server ) and SSH client ( also from SSH.com ). SSH shell thru firewall works. SSH File transfer works. On client config: forward port 5900 ( correct port for my setup at home ). On work pc ( SSH client ), connect to localhost:0, but i never get the password prompt back from home machine ( SSH server ). No errors, no time outs, nothin just dead air. Everything works fine on each respective network, so its the tunneling that is the issue.. Anyone got a clue? + advice on a useable free SSH server for windows.. Re: How to set time-out
So, are you saying that the clock in the system tray is keeping the system from timing out? Andy Harter writes: The semantics of IdleTimeout are currently to disconnect only if there are input events or update requests from the viewer. If you have a clock updating in the taskbar, for example, nothing more than a minute will have any effect. Re: Local printing with VNC
No it wouldn't be a useful feature to bloat up VNC with it, as any real OS supports print re-direction. There is no need to duplicate services. Same goes for file transfer. Or sound, or or or.. Re: Sound Support
I vote NO.. ( yes i know it wasn't a poll ) Why you ask? Because it starts to get out of what VNC is designed for, and its a slippery slope.. before long we will end up with a 20mb install file and require 128mb of ram to run. Its designed to be a small multi-platform utility for remote control/viewing. Lets not loose sight of that, and just improve that functionality.. ( if there is much more that can be done to improve it.. ) Now.. a code fork into a project to develop something that has everything + the kitchen sink isn't a problem, as it would have its place in life. Just please dont do that to the base VNC and destroy it. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Andy Harter [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: How about sound? Its pure IP, it should work ok. ( remember netBEUI wont work ) It just wont be able to use name resolution / file sharing if the rest isn't setup. Just to clarify, I'm big on personal rights and freedom ( being here in America and watching it slowly dwindle away is frustrating ) But i also realize where those freedoms stop. In a business, personal freedoms dont apply once you walk in the door. It is the companies building, equipment etc. and they are paying you to work for them, not for ANY personal activities. Plus the users WERE informed of the random auditing will take place.. Nothing was 'hidden' from them before they hired on and AGREED to the rules here... ( i didn't make them, i just enforce them ). Same goes for drug tests, GPS style ID badges, cameras in the halls, parking lots, guard at the door, etc.. while at work you dont have the same 'rights' as you do in public or home. its a legal fact of life. Its also a choice you make before you work for a company. Now.. once i walk out the door.. that is a different story. oh.. and what's a 'stage police'??? I was able to access my computer several times and it worked beautifully each time, opened programs, etc. Then, the next time I tried to access it, I got the Failed to connect to server message, and have gotten it every time since. The only thing I changed was that I went to full-screen the last time it connected successfully. We went to a third location with another Windows 98 computer with a DSL connection, installed the software, and couldn't access either of the two computers, getting the same failed to connect to server message each time. I finally went home and tried to access the other two from my computer and got the same message. What puzzles me is that it worked so perfectly several times, and then not at all. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but nothing changed. Is there anything else I can do, or should I just give up? What you want to do is make 'pro' appear to be TS, and it CAN be done, ( and no i wont tell you how, as technically that's violating the DMCA and i goto jail.. ) but, it would be totally illegal with all of Microsoft's new rules.. I want to use the VNC java applet client to allow access to multiple Windows 2000 Terminal Services sessions via the web. I could do this with the Terminal Services Advanced Client Active X control on a web page, but I would like for the users to be able to use any browser/OS, not just IE/Win. I know I could pay for Tarantella, Citrix, or HOBLink JWT but that will get expensive, and why pay if VNC can do it free? The FAQ at www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ states that VNC can be used with separate VNC servers running in each terminal server session, but that the VNC clients don't update unless they also have a WTS client (I assume they meant on the client computer, not within the TS session). Has anyone attempted to run both a VNC server and client within each WTS session and then accessing them via the java applet client? Or has anyone found any way to use the VNC or TightVNC java clients to access multiple Terminal Services sessions? Or, do you know of a java client for WTS/Remote Desktop Protocol, like HOBLink JWT, but free? Discontinued Win2k
Pro is no longer a product, since it was replaced with XP. So you cant sell it unless you have a special agreement with MS ( like we do, but we are HUGE , 100k+ machines ) but of course, that will stop soon and besides, new machines wont have drier support for 2k.. Server is still available, until *.NET is released. then I'm sure about 6 months later Server 2k will also not be a 'non product'.
