Squad Car Tag Numbers
Haven't been on the digest in a long time and I know this has been gone over many times. Forgive me. I'm retired now and have more time to watch TAGS and think about these things. I remember squad car tag numbers JL-327 and DC-269 and thought there were a couple others. If any of you real smart people out there know of other tag numbers would you please pass them along? Yes Gary, Forgot to mention all the Mayberry sites in the Gas Mask episode of Superman. The easiest I guess was the man in the gas suit walking right in front of the court house. Jim Lindsey
Orville, thanks for the memory of the movie Shenandoah. James Best had a great line in that movie. After he and "the boy" and several others escaped from the prison camp and were heading south, one of his fellow escapees said he smelled bacon. Travelling from Mayberry
I remember a color episode where Andy, Aunt Bee and Opie traveled with Goober to the state capital for a gas station owners meeting or something to that effect. Near the end when they stopped for gas, Andy and Goober were standing outside of the car and a Coors beer truck drove by behind them. Any one who may have knowledge of adult beverages knows that in the 60's, Coors was illegal east of the Mississippi River. Hence the plot for Smokey and the Bandit filmed in the 70's. Paul, I can think of several reasons Ms. Lloyd would not want to come to Mayberry Days. If she was in the parade in a convertible she'd be in the sun.the sun gives her the herpes. If she rode in a sedan or coupe, she'd have to hang her head out the window like a dog. Also, most of the indoor events would include chit chat...she hates to chit chat. The Unknown
I may be in the minority, but I don't mind that we don't know the name of the gentleman who played Mr. Schwump. I like some mystery and the unknown gives us something to think about and discuss. Sort of like imagining what Sarah, Juanita or Andy's late wife might have looked like. I always assumed Mrs. Taylor had to have been a redhead due to the carrot top on Opie. I see Sarah as a spinster in her 60's with her hair in a bun and orthopedic shoes who was just waiting by the switchboard for the next juicy call to listen to. I think Juanita might have been a nice looking blonde who constantly chewed gum and called all the diner customers Hun or Sweetie. I hope the mystery of the man who played Mr. Schwump goes on and on. I do have one question though, since I've never had the opportunity to go the Mayberry Days. Has there ever been a Mr. Schwump tribute artist? I hope there is. My grandfather had a 1950 Chevy pickup named Maude. Every time he would down shift on a hill and the truck would strain, he would say, "Come on Maude" and she would pull the hill. Fond Memories
Ken, Even though I grew up in the 60's, I have many of the same fond memories of childhood summers. There seemed to be no where you couldn't go on your bicycle. Sometime if I didn't want her coming along, I'd have to put my dog in the basement because she followed me everywhere. She saw us play a lot of baseball. Like you we never had A/C so it didn't matter how hot it was outside, we never stayed inside. We played baseball, swam and did almost the same things here in Virginia that you did in Wisconsin. I guess by the 60's inflation had set in and we would collect 5 pop bottles for 10 cents to go to the local store and get a 16oz Double Cola and a 5-pack of baseball cards. We always got the Double Cola because the Cokes and Dr. Peppers only came in 10oz bottles. We were thrifty shoppers back then. If the baseball cards were of players that you had many multiples of, they'd go in the bike spokes to make a motor sound going down the road. I think kids today are missing out on a lot by doing nothing but playing video games and surfing the internet. I read an article several years ago about arm injuries to current baseball pitchers. A theory was mentioned that there are more arm and shoulder injuries to current players because they spent too much time indoors as kids instead of being out playing baseball all the time like we did. Their arms had not been trained to withstand the rigors of constantly throwing a ball. Well, that's my two cents as an old curmudgeon. I miss the good old days. But, as a recently passed friend of mine once said, "one of these days, THESE will be the good old days". I always remember Francis Bavier as Mrs. Barley in the original The Day the Earth Stood Still from 1951. Never saw the remake. George Lindsey appeared in an episode of M*A*S*H as a surgeon. My favorite though is an easy one, Don Knotts in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.Must have seen it 100 times. I have Va. Tech seasons football tickets. We have a defensive tackle named Luther Maddy. Whenever he makes a tackle there are always a few, "atta boy Luther" cries in the stands. I'm in the habit lately of DVRing the old Perry Mason's on MeTV everyday. There is hardly an episode that doesn't have someone from Mayberry in it. John Masters (Olan Soule) has a recurring role as a court clerk. Briscoe Darling (Denver Pyle) has been on several episodes and has even been the murderer on a couple. Many, many others, including members of the Esquire Club have appeared in the courtroom and as I mentioned a few weeks ago, I even saw Mr. Schwump one time. Some of us were talking about The Ed Sullivan Show and some of the stranger guests that would appear (Don't know about you, but I haven't seen a good plate spinner in years). One of my niece's, in her mid 20's at the time, wanted to know who Ed Sullivan was. When I told her about him and the show, she asked, "What did he do?". I told her that he secured a lot of great acts for the show as well as emceeing the show and introducing the acts. She asked again, "Was he a singer or comedian, what was his talent". When I told her he just introduced the acts on the show, she couldn't believe someone like that could get their own show. Simpler Time
Ken, thanks for the reminder of the simpler Christmas times of the old days. I miss the homemade cookies at Christmas as well. My mother would make what seemed like thousands to give to neighbors as gifts. When the baking was going on the only cookies that my sister and I could get while still warm were the ones that were just burnt enough to miss the cut. This caused my sister and I to be a little devious. When a batch of our favorites were in the oven, we'd watch the wind-up timer my mother had set. With about 1 minute to go, we'd go to the farthest part of the house and raise quite a commotion. While my mother was investigating, those cookies would be burnt just enough for our enjoyment. To this day, I still like cookies burnt around the edges. A Merry Mayberry Christmas to all, Harry in Salem, VA ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Taking pictures
Ken, After racking my brain for at least 2 minutes, the only picture taking I can remember is when the would-be bank robbers posed as the award bestowing FBI Agent and the newspaper reporter covering the story. Barney's fast draw had never been successfully photographed. All they were able to get was sort of a blur. Of course, we all know special agents with the FBI never allow themselves to be photographed. As soon as I finished typing this, I remembered Barney's hidden camera taking his picture when Wally's Fillin Station was experiencing the robberies. Otherwise, the only photos I remember are the ones already taken. Floyd's touched up photo he sent to Madeline Grayson, Barney's photos in the Gazette and Andy's high school and baby pictures. Harry in Salem, VA. P.S. Just typing the words Fillin Station reminded me of a funny but true old story. A friend's sister married a young man from up north (Michigan). Soon after the marriage, they came to visit her parents in a rural area near here. On Saturday morning the young lady's father announced he was going down to the 'fillin station'. The new son-in-law asked if he could go along. When the young lady commended him for wanting to spend time with his father-in-law, he said, "it's not that.I just want to see what a fillin station is". ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Casting
I haven't contributed to the digest in a long time. I hope you will forgive me if this subject has been brought up in the past. I have become hooked on MeTV and the old shows of my childhood. Lately, I've been DVRing the old black and white Perry Mason Shows. Many, many of the lesser and extra players from TAGS also appear on Perry Mason. As a matter of fact, on the one I watched last night, fun girl Skippy turned out to have been the murderer in a tear filled court room confession. I've always thought that the same people did the casting for each show. I had that somewhat confirmed the other night when Perry was at an inquest in a small town where the saloon was used as the court room. When they panned the gallery of the room, who was sitting next to the window but Mr. Schwump. I ran it back several time and am sure it was him. I just love seeing those Mayberry actors on Perry Mason. John Masters is often the court clerk, Charlie (or Chuck) O'Malley is often a judge, the guy Earnest T. bashed over the head at Mrs. Wiley's is often seated at the table with DA Hamilton Berger and just the other night Wally from the Fillin Station was the police lab expert. Nice Tribute
I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning on ESPN Radio and had no idea those two were such big fans of Andy Griffith. For their first tribute they whistled the theme to the show and then later they played the version from the early 60's where Andy sang the lyrics to "The Fishin Hole". Mike Greenberg then made a comment I found very touching. He said, "Andy Griffith was an artist. It is the goal of most artists to leave a legacy that outlives them. 99.9% of artist fail to do that. Andy Griffith has left a legacy that will go on long after his passing". Amen, Mike. They went on to talk about TAGS never being off the air and Greenberg said something I could definately relate to, even though I was raised in the south and he was raised in New York City. "If you were a kid home sick from school, you watched The Andy Griffith Show" during the day." These guys know more than sports. While it is a sad time, there is much to celebrate. A truly fine and caring man who gave so much pleasure and entertainment to so many people. I was talking to a friend yesterday about Andy. He gave Andy a great compliment. Andy Was Wrong
The one time Andy was wrong that always bothered me was in Barney and the Governor. Andy was trying to convince Barney that the Governor was not coming to ball him out and said something like, "Barney, I've never lied to you before and I'm not lying to you now." Actually Andy did lie to Barney in the past. I'm sure it was never malicious and was meant to spare Barney's feelings. The first one that comes to mind is about the "soloist" microphone in Barney and The Choir. That was a whopper. Don't forget the one about the rare nickel. Dramatic Acting
David, Very good point on Don Knott's being a dramatic actor playing a comedian. I have read many reviews raving about Don's stage performance in On Golden Pond. Doesn't get much more dramatic than that. I remember reading the same Jack Benny story. Harry in Salem, VA P.S. Speaking of Jack Benny: I remember seeing George Burns on The Tonight Show years ago talking about his friendship with Jack Benny and his ability to always make Jack laugh. He said one night he and Gracie were at a large dinner party at a producer's home with Jack and his wife. The producer was having Jeanette MacDonald sing after the dinner. George said right before she started to sing, he leaned over to Jack and said, "Y'know Jack, it would be very rude for you to laugh while this young lady is singing." Ms. MacDonald started singing and Jack almost fell out of his chair he was laughing so hard. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Dramatic Don Knotts
There was a mention of Don Knotts and dramatic roles. I'm sure someone else will also know this so I'll put it out there. From 1953-1955 Don played Wilber Peterson on Search for Tomorrow, one of the first soap operas. I'm sure that had to be very dramatic as those shows were real weepers in those days. Andy and Opie's Bait
Many times when I was kid in the early 60's, my father and I would go fishing near his old home place on the James River and we never took bait with us. Near the river bank we'd find a good digging rock and get our night crawlers that way. My father would also turn over some rocks to find helgramites which were sort of like centipedes if I remember correctly. The main thing I remember about helgramites is that I didn't want to touch them. So, just to assure everyone. You don't need a tackle box or a pocket full of worms to go fishing. I even know people who have used a safety pin as a fish hook, tied to a piece of string on an old bamboo pole. Earl Scruggs
I'm a few days behind on the digest but wanted to add to the comments about the great Earl Scruggs. I was luck enough to see him in concert about 6 years ago. Even in his 80's he hadn't lost a thing. About a year after that, my wife and I took a 5 day trip to Nashville. While touring the Country Music Hall of Fame, they had one whole room set aside as a tribute to Earl Scruggs. There was a quote on the wall from another great banjo picker named Bella Fleck that I have always remembered, he said, "No matter what any of the rest of us do, we're all just trying to be like Earl". To me that was quite a tribute. Harry in Salem, VA P.S. My favorite Earl Scruggs quote from one of his appearances on The Beverly Hillbillies when Lester Flatt was talking about Granny's fine vittals, "Me too, Lester, me too". I use that one quite often. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Trained Noticer
This may have been mentioned before, if so, I apologize. I was home from work the other day, flipped on the TV and a color episode of TAGS was being shown. I haven't watched many of the color episodes since they originally aired in the 60's, but decided to watch this one. I don't know the name of the episode, but it was the one where a con man bilked Floyd, Goober, Aunt Bee, Helen and eventually Andy out of $100 each with the hopes of finding a Civil War treasure. As the con man was preparing to leave town, he bought a train ticket and set down on a bench at the station. Behind him was a chalk board that had the train schedule written on it. Near the bottom it had Ashville. Someone forgot to put another e in Asheville. I just thought that was interesting. I'd like to add a broken heart if it hasn't already been mentioned. I think Barney's heart broke just a bit when Romona Wiley (Becktauris) didn't remember him. Allen, thanks for the heads up about Rodney Dillard being in Marion. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it down there. Could you get Tim White to give us a heads up when the show will air. Favorite Lines
Since my all time favorite episode is Convicts at Large my all time favorite quote comes from that episode, "Maude, Barney, those hamburgers are going to be ruined. I'm not gonna be responsible". To me that was one of Floyd's best episodes. From that line to "Dance with her Al" to swinging the banana in time with the music, Floyd was the man. Some other favorite lines: Barney: "Jubel, Jubel, Jubel" Malcolm Tucker: "For the love of Mike, just do it!" Gomer: "He's ugly, but he ain't stupid" Goober: "Ain't you got a Jack" Opie: "Pretty hard to forget a thing like that, Paw." Mayor Pike: "You're not gonna let them make fun of our little fat Mayor are you?" Andy: "Goober, will you tell her to quit hanging her head out the window like a dog?" Barney: "Andy, if you flew a quail through this room, every woman in here would point." Like most of you, I could go on all day. The Choir and Andy's father
Dewey, I also enjoy watching that choir member smile. I've always wondered if he was supposed to or if he just couldn't help it. There are several scenes where Barney or Floyd are doing something particularly funny and you can see Andy put his hand over his mouth to cover a smile. The comment about Andy being raised by Aunt Bee but his father still being around when he was 6 or 7 brought to mind my own father. He was the youngest of 8 born right before the stock market crash in 1929. His mother died when he was 6 weeks old and his father raised he and the ones who hadn't grown and moved out until my father was about 5. Then he and his remaining brothers and sisters were sent to live with relatives because his father was a mean old son of a gun. My father was raised by a woman who even though she was in her 40's was his first cousin. As far as my father was concerned, she was his mother and her daughters were his sisters. My grandfather lived to age 80 and passed in 1964. I have memories of him still being what everyone then called "an ornry old cuss" til the day he died. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Childhood Toys
Ken, We had the same toys here in Virginia. I loved my tinker toys. I used to spend hours making as many different airplanes as I could. Then I would get my metal gas station and all of my cars out. The lift on my gas station was a little different though, it was a lever and not a crank. Our living room couch has a skirt that hung down and I would stick my cars under there, that was the garage. I would put the airplanes under each of the end tables, they were my hangers. You see at the age of 10, in my imagination I was a multi-millionaire with around 10 - 12 cars and 5 or 6 airplanes. Life was sweet. One of the best things in my childhood though was my dog. She was a mutt we got as a puppy when I was in the 5th grade. I named her Samantha because I had a crush on Elizabeth Montgomery from Bewitched. We were the best of friends. She went everywhere with me, following me on my bike. When we played baseball all day, she would follow me to the field and sit there while we played all day and then follow me home. A problem arose when I got my drivers license at 16. Everytime I drove somewhere I would have to put her in the house so she wouldn't try to follow me in the car. The first time this happened, I had driven about 3 blocks down the hill from our house and looked in the mirror and saw Samantha chasing after me as fast as she could. I felt so bad, I stopped the car and drove her back home. She just couldn't understand why she couldn't go with me. She stayed with my mother when I went away to college and then when I got an apartment after getting out of school. She got very sick around the age of 12 and the vet said it would be best to put her to sleep. Taking her to the vet was the hardest thing I've ever done. Here I was a strong ex-football player of 23 years old and I cried like a baby and as I type this I still get a tear(s) in my eye. I've had several dogs since, but I don't think there is ever one as good as the one you had as a child. Mayberry Debt
Ken, You bring up a good point about spending in those days and spending now. I know my parents never went into debt to buy anything but our home. They saved for things and bought frugally. All of our appliances came from a store that sold new appliances that were scratched or dented. Our refridgerator had a scratch on the side that was against the counter so no one saw it. The washer and dryer were both scratched but they were in the basement laundry room and no one ever saw them. I remember the day we got our first color TV in 1970. It was an RCA floor model with a chunk out of the cabinet in front. We didn't care, it was $200 cheaper than an undamaged one. I was reminded of those times about 4 years ago when my wife and I wanted a refridgerator to put in our basement. We went to a used appliance store but they didn't have any that suited our needs. The owner told us he had a scratch and dent store in the next town over that sold new appliances. We bought a brand new name brand fridge for about $400 less than an undamaged one. It had just a small dent near the bottom. It runs great and so far we haven't had to call "The Man". The youngest brother, who had been a pest as a child said, "Do you two remember the time you two took me out in the middle of the lake and threw me off the boat to each me how to swim??" Trivial Trivialities
Does anyone know where a list of the trivia questions from the contest at Mayberry Days can be found. I'd love to see them and see how I would do. I'm sure they were difficult. Ken, when I was about 6 years old, they were finishing a leg of the Blue Ridge Parkway near my grandparents house and a lot of workers were brought in from out of town. My grandparents rented a room to 2 brothers from Pennsylvania. My grandmother had one hard and fast rule, no drinking alcohol. She wouldn't even say the word beer, she would offer you a "root drink". After 3 or 4 weeks, the brothers came in late one Friday night staggering worse than Otis. If they had seen a cow, I'm sure they would have been riding it. My grandmother let them sleep until about 5:30am and woke them up and told them they had to be out by 10:00am. We never saw them again. Gun over the hutch
Ken, I always remembered the gun over the hutch because my grandfather also kept a pistol over my grandmother's hutch. I never knew it until I was about 14 and he was teaching me about firearms. Once he taught me how to safely use them he told me about the one over the hutch in case of an emergency. All of the other guns were locked up. Luckily, we never had to get the gun down. Of course, we never entertained any TV repairmen either. In those days those guys could be a dangerous. Mayberry Alums
I know it might be a technicality, but there are an awful lot of Mayberry alums in Gomer Pyle, USMC. Jim Nabors, Frank Sutton, Alan Melvin, Ronnie Schell, William Christopher to just name a few. For some reason, whenever I think of Ronnie Schell, I remember seeing him doing a stand up routine on TV in the '60's. It may have been on The Tonight Show. The one part I've always remembered was when he talked about his career. He said, "You may remember me, for a couple of years I was Duke on the Gomer Pyle Show. Then, last year, I got my own sit-com, Good Morning World where I played part of a deejay team. This year, I'm Duke on the Gomer Pyle Show." I guess you had to be there. Shari, Your story about being a church visitor reminding of something I did at our church several years ago. We were having a dinner after church and I was asked to make announcments prior to the meal. I was also asked to acknowledge the fact that we had visitors joining us. I thought I did a bang up job mixing some humor into everything I was supposed to cover. Then our pastor (who was also a good friend and golf buddy) walked over with a grin on his face. He asked if I realized how I referred to our visitors? I said I couldn't remember the exact words. He laughed and told me I had said "I see some strange faces out there and would like to welcome them to St. Mark's." He laughed and said, "Don't ever tell visitors they have strange faces". After that I never did it again. Just to make sure I have a TAGS connection, "Lotsa luck to you and yours." Everyone have a great weekend. Pickles and Cars
Harriet, My grandmother was a pickle making expert who'se expertise I'd put up against your Ph.D professor any day. People used to come from miles around just to hear my grandmother talk about puttin' up a pickle. Just kidding, but she did make great dill, sweet and bread and butter pickles. My grandfather grew the cucumbers and she did the pickling. I'm not sure what method they used but the pickles were usually pretty uniform in size. Those are day I miss. Going down in Grandma's basement for a jar of whatever you might want. If you could can it, my grandmother could put it in a jar and everything home grown. Every vegatable you can imagine, tomato and grape juice, pickles and one of my favorites as a boy, pickled beets. I have not had a good pickled beet since my grandmother got too old to can. I guess I think about this now because two weeks ago would have been her 109th birthday. Grandma fed us all well. Ken, I know what you mean about your first car. My family never had the nicest car around either. In the early 60's we had a German Ford called a Taunus. Ugly little thing. My senior year in high school, my father let me have his old 1965 Rambler 770 Classic 2 door hard top. It hadn't run in 6 months and I had to work to get the money to get it going. $200 later I was tooling down the road in a copper colored beauty that others thought terrible. It had a 287 V-8 with a 3 speed on the column transmission. It burnt a quart of oil a week, had no lock on the trunk, would occasionaly get stuck in first gear and the only window that rolled up and down on it's own was the front passenger window. The others had to be pulled or pushed by hand. I doubt that car still exists, but if it did I would love for someone to contact me and send a picture. I'd love to have it back. That was a nice thing you did getting in touch with those previous owners. Here's the link with a picture of a 65 Rambler 770 Classic. Just imagine it in a copper or bronze color. Last week my wife and I were lucky enough to spend a couple of days in Mt. Airy celebrating our 21st anniversary. We had a great time. We checked into the Hampton Inn and Lenise (the General Manager) and her staff were very friendly and accomodating. They drove us in the "Opie Bus" to Wally's Fillin Station where we took a tour of Mt. Airy in a 1964 Mayberry Squad Car. While we did hit the siren a few times Ken, we didn't run the battery down. Dewey, I'd have to include a bullet. But it must have a note attached that says, "One of these was never used in anger in Mayberry". Harry in Salem, VA ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Last Names
Great idea Vicki, but I can't remember anyone mentioning Brewbaker on TAGS. There there was an actor, Robert Brubaker, who appeared in two episodes of TAGS. He played FBI Agent Frank Brewster in "If I Had A Quarter Million" and he Roger Milton in "Andy on Trial". However, my grandmother's maiden name was Crumpacker but I'm not sure if I am related to Andy's buddy Ed Crumpacker. Harry in Salem, VA P.S. Also, my Hometown of Roanoke, VA was mentioned when they had the choir competition there. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
