It's been a quiet list for awhile now but there is a lot of expertise
on here. Shelia is a php wiz. Rudy either invented sql or was weaned

Joseph, if you are not getting the "error rendering this directive"
type message then the server side include does not seem to be
functioning on the web server.Even if you path statements are wrong,
and I'm not saying they are, you would get the processing error
message.

Are you wanting to do these includes through php not shtml? php
includes are different.

Is the web server yours? Or is this a hosted environment? If the
latter, then you should speak to the tech folks and ask them what is
happening. You can't get much more authoritative than the Apache
tutorial for adding ssi to Apache.

Good WAMP package and instructions are found at:

Still don't see any errors thrown in IE6. Only problem I see are with
the horizontal menu. Nothing with the Navigate. I don't see any jumps.
The top level item slides a fraction left as the submenu appears but
that looks good not at all like an error.Nothing is jumping at all.

It a very good remake of the site. Much cleaner code.

Poking at it slowly. The horizontal menu issue comes from
menu_back_off.jpg being only 100px wide so it is too short for some of
the links.

Browsers used: IE6, FF3.0.1, Opera 9.51 all on xp. There is a firewall
which sometimes causes funky results so I wouldn't worry too much here
unless somebody else confirms what I see.

Don't see a drop. The left "Navigate" items move a little because of
the change in the icon but that's a left-right movement. In FF the
menu doesn't reset if you go to "Adversity" and return via the back
arrow. Does fine in the other two.

But there are a number of other issues. The foundation1 page, that you
asked about has problems with the tabs for the horizontal main
menu. The headings such as "Our Philosophy" are longer than the tabs so
the background showson the right end. The tabs don't cover the entire
width of any of the spaces between the vetical separators. Compared to
other pages the text is too far left. And none of the tabs produce
the sub-menu in IE6. The other two browsers to get the submenu.

In Opera, the flash next to the logo is actually below the logo but
above the horizontal menu. It creates a whole new space for itself.
The mahagony box (if that is the color) is there; it is just empty.

In FF the submenus apprear across the face of the main horizontal menu
on pages other than your problem page.

Companing code on the problem page and others is interesting. Only 11
html errors and most of those are flash related (which says all that
needs to be said about flash and standards) and 4 css error. Two of
the errors involve the use of illegal negative padding on div.sdmenu
and div.sdmenu div a. Killing both seems to make no visible difference
in FF. Can't be sure of the effects elsewhere.

formmail! Oh I hope it is at least the more secure version not Matt's.

Deprecated elements. Tables.

The DW generated page "Our Philospohy" on the other hand has 231
errors and 33 warning for html and 4 css errors. Just hate it when the
errors are intricate enough to make it all work; including the 5 style
sheets courtesy of DW.

Can't find a quick solution to the horizontal bar. I'm curious to see
if this is just the firewall here that causes it or if others see the
same issues. I'll check later when I don't have the firewall to
contend with.

Re: [wdvltalk] Kaspersky problems - or maybe not... maybe!

2008-02-28 Thread Drew Trusz
Have you checked their respective knowledge bases yet? Forums?

Do we have a case of dueling tools here? ZA Pro also includes av. Was
the entire Pro suite operational? How was the isp reached? Browser?
ftp client?

Treat this like it was a new machine never before networked. Check all
the basic configurations including browser settings and mail. Install
ZA Pro as it was installed. If you don't know that, do the default
install paying careful attention to what is installed. If that
restores connectivity beyond the isp, try the Kaspersky again. If
not, got a backup copy?

If the problem recurs then you are going to have to disable some parts
of one or the other products until you get a workable arrangement.
Multiple av still seems a dicey proposition.

Much of what he says is unexceptional. Mac is a dependable
proprietary, sealed platform. That's it strength and weakness.

If we want to use his car analogy, its got a BMW price but it really
is a Mini Cooper. That makes it better than a Redmond Yugo but not as
good as a handcrafted machine. There's a lot of glitz, good press and
it makes a great vvoo. But for the price difference most
people will take the Yugo since it too does work out of the box right
until it falls apart and then you can replace it easily. And if you
want a real high performance machine you will custom build either
yourself or someone else.

You don't see niche cars in fleets either just like you don't see Mac
office networks. Macs show up in offices as specialty machines, like
they do in print shops for some graphics work. But you only rarely see
them as desktops. They aren't built for it. Scot Finney just had an
interesting piece on this very subject in his newsletter:
http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/93.htm#aapl
In essence he argues that the very never-crack-the-case strength of a
Mac won't work in the world of corporate IT. And setting up the
servers just makes people shudder.

Its just the same as most things: six of one half a dozen of the
other. If you're not a game player the Mac is a good longer term
value. Linux is an even better longer term choice if you want to do
the work. And Windows will let demonstrate the blissfulness of
ignorance. Personally, I do longer term with blissfulness. Sooner or
later you gotta test the site in IE.

I get the problem in ie6 as well. The solution for 6 is to clear
between wrapper 3 and wrapper 2. You need layout since everything has
a relative position. Something has to be fixed and the clear does
that.

Since Media Center is a hardware and software package, your PC should
have the wherewithal to run it without modification. System
modification shouldn't be necessary and I suppose could be disruptive.

MS has some warnings about running Media Center when doing what they
call "high-stress" activities. Generic discussion is here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327158

If you want to sort through some of the technical issues this may be a
good place to start:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/partners/dfw.mspx

Mostly the answer seems to be you need to shutdown other programs.

is what the specs show in their example. You could achieve your goal
of h2 for the sidebar by using a double float right setup. That is,
float the main content right then float the side bar right. That also
neatly takes care of the skip-to-contents question since the content
will appear first in the code.

It's also a wonderful reminder of the power of css just watching
things reverse with a few quick editing changes.

Couple of small things relating to css. There are a couple of errors
in the .ul1 selectors. I think you are trying to comment out the
#margin-left using the #. In css the comments as in the /* stuff */
format. The other 'errors' are background color issues and not
something that matters.

Because you are using transitional doctype, fully valid, you get to
cheat a little. You've got some "align" attributes in the element
tags: align=center in a p tag for example. This works in transitional
but in fact is wrong. That's presentation and needs to go into the
styling. Similarly you have images which are align=right which
properly should be floated. It's usually better to play with floats a
bit until they make sense. If you try to change at this point it might
mess everything up. But it gives you something to do in your "free
time".

Lastly, a point I'm almost loath to mention -- header order. There is
a note in the specs about having to use headers in their numerical
order h1 to h6 without skipping. While the note refers to "some
people", it was once mentioned on this list best I can recall, that
those people are the IETF. So if appeals to authority are important to
you, that would matter.

What might matter more is that headers are generally taken to be an
outline structure for a page. If you accept this (it isn't specified)
then you have to rethink your column headings. Starting with h2 is
wrong. And it is certainly erroneous if you are doing it only for the
size effect of the text. Use bigger text instead. Again your practice
may be acceptable in transitional states. (Just as an aside there is
an old and what I find to be sterile debate about having more than a
single h1 per page -- the specs talk about sections and have two h1's
in the example.)

Overall, it's a good effort and these are mostly minor issues which
familiarity resolves.

Have to agree with Deb it is both busy looking and governmental. And
that is probably the effect you want on the home page. But maybe a
little less busy on other pages might be good?

Once someone starts looking through the categories, might it not be
helpful to drop the left column? You've got Login and Membership at
the top and I imagine it would be triggered when they go to check out
as well. Or perhaps add some elements of the left column to the
lighter red menu preceding the content? This way you are down to two
content content columns -- documents and categories. Much easier on
the eye and as a user I think I'd likely be ignoring the left column
while looking for my documents.

Oh and is the "Unauthorized Copy" splashed across the documents on
even the downloads? Here that might create the impression that there
is something wrong with the document.

Good luck with it.

Remove all you want. I've got 9 entries under Universal Serial Devices
for a usb hub which is my thumb drive. Sometimes I just don't have the
patience to wait for windows to decide its safe for me to remove it
and I just take it out. The multiple listings are a result of that
action. On the workstation the thumb appears as 2 entries under HID
and 11 usb listings. Am I that impatient or is windows that slow?

This happens because when booting, plug and play reads the attached
devices and compares them to a table the os keeps listing devices.
When devices are changed or the environment changes (my cavalier thumb
drive removal) records aren't properly removed or new ones are added.
If you eliminate the "extras" whatever is needed will be found on the
next boot and added back. So my 4 listings for a single monitor on one
machine means nothing.

The device manager is showing devices not drivers per se. So you can
delete and see if it comes back. Its possible xp sees your printer as
2 devices, for example. If you kill one it will work through the
session and either return or not when rebooting.

Just looking at it in IE6 I hear screams of width and margin bugs.
When sections drop like that in IE6 it usually means math errors fed
by IE's various margin and padding bugs. Things fit perfectly until IE
adds a pixel or three here and there. Put some borders around the main
parts to see how far off he is and then adjust widths downward until
it fits. Looking at positioniseverything.net would also help.

Looking quickly and briefly at the css seems to confirm the initial
impression. First, IE6 doesn't recognize position: fixed. If he means
to fix the location of the header etc in the container, use
position:absolute within the position:relative container.

Secondly., using pixels for sizing is problematic. Percentages usually
work better in addition to being liquid. The design shatters quickly.

That's enough before the fine tooth combs are applied. And there isn't
anything really horrid, just that annoying tweaking.

Well the last thing you added was the dual monitors and tv. Following
the usual conventions of trouble shooting, remove the tv then the dual
monitors to see if either of those is the cause of the loss of the
hub. If not, disconnect everything from the hub and see if that works.
Then you may want to look at the hub and cable.

I'm involved in producing a web site for a group of churches locally.
All will be linked under one umbrella site with either a page of
their own or a link out tot heir existing site.

My own parish uploads its weekly newsletter using the letter saved as
a web page in MS Word and then uploads using an FTP program.

Now the others in the same deanery want to do similar are asking if
they can use MSWORKS and WORDPERFECT to do the same thing.

Anyone out there able to tell me if these two packs can save a
document as a web page?

Works is Office Jr; doesn't have the full range of apps but what it
has, as far as I remember, works as expected. Word in Works should
then be able to make those lovely web pages.

Don't know about WordPerfect but I expect it would also do a web page.

even the simplest layout using CSS.

I have two pages using the SAME stylesheet and DIV
structure. However, I am not receiving the same results and, for the
life of me, I can't figure out why.

Here they are:

(1) This is a view source dump from a web application page using
the new CSS layout. It has all of the .NET junk and that may be
causing my problems. But -- THIS PAGE IS WORKING:
http://www.littletownmart.com/css/index-sat.html

(2) This is the "bare bones" page with just the DIVs and a little
bit of text. THIS PAGE IS NOT WORKING!!!
http://www.littletownmart.com/css/index_Simple.html

(3) Here is the stylesheet:
http://www.littletownmart.com/css/main.css

Welcome to the list and to css. It does get easier but it takes a
little time to change how you think about issues.

Lets start at the top. First you need an entire doctype; yours is only
partial. You are throwing IE into quirks mode. Essentially you are
asking the browser to guess at what you want to do not telling it what
set of rules to follow. I'd suggest using the strict html 4.01
version. Doctypes can be found here (you may already have all of these
links but I can't know that so forgive the repition):
http://www.w3.org/QA/2002/04/valid-dtd-list.html

Second, don't develop in IE. IE6 and lower are notoriously broken in
terms of css. IE7 is better but still not top of the line. Use Firefox
or Opera then corrupt your code to make it work in IE. Get the
developers plug in for FF, the Peppersack plug in, allows in browser
editing so you can immediately see the effect of changes.

Thirdly, have a look at http://www.positioniseverything.net (often
referred to pie).It has an entire section devoted to known bugs in IE6
and 5x. Most of the bugs have several methods of dealing with them.
The ones shown are pretty much the latest and greatest but there are
simpler ways to manage things. Mostly you have to watch the width of
things and you have to clear floats. Anything floated is out of the
flow of the document. With IE6 you have to watch the "hasLayout"
problem discussed in pie. For a discussion of floats, I've always
found this document at brain jar makes sense to me:
http://www.brainjar.com/css/positioning/

Fourthly, if you look at css sites you'll find that absolute
positioning isn't widely used for full layouts. There are problems
with using it since it takes things out of the normal flow of the
document and leads to the always aggravating unintended consequences.
Take the plunge and go with normal positioning and floats. Its worth
learning the value of position:relative in layout (covered in part in
pie).

So, start with the doctype, it won't seem to help much but it does,
and then do the pie articles. At that point bring back your questions
and this group should be able to help. It's a struggle like Riva said,
but it's worth it.

Almost certainly there are box model problems with 5 and 5.5 as well

You can always remove the extras and doing it specifically rather than

There are some really knowledgeable people on this list when it comes

also php lists.

If you have a server at home, php and mysql are a breeze to add even
for windows.

Having moved from Perl to php I can say it is something you can pick
up at the basic to intermediate levels without too much trouble. The
manual is helpful but like so many manuals, only after you reach the
point where you already understand half of it.

Looked at it with FF 2.01, IE6 or Opera 9.02.

Opera is very unhappy with your fruit table image. In fact it is so
unhappy the image is shoved up and mostly out of the view port. Having
a top margin of -120px on this image means something isn't right. That
image should be in the logo container and not having to be shoved
around relative to the top of the viewport.

What I did was to reconstruct the site by cutting and pasting from the
logo out. For each section I added the html, checked how it looked.
Then added the css. The one thing I made sure to do was to add a
comment for each closing tag for a div.

What I found was that in IE I had to add a clearing statement before
the closing of the wrapper div in order to add content (your height
101% might do this, I just reflexively remove height statements). The
other thing I found is that I think you have an extra closing div tag.
Since I did the reconstruction on a separate page I'm not sure. But
when I was done the image was where is was supposed to be and didn't
need any of the -120px business to place it in the right place.

There does seem to be a small hesitation as the graphics load and are
positioned for the logo. Might be that you need to onload the images.
It resolves fast and may not matter.

Hope it helps.

On the above URL in FF, the display table has gaps.. but on IE.. it does not?
Can anyone explain why?

(I know I know, tables are bad.. though I've never really understood why...)

There isn't a thing wrong with table based layout if your goal is to
exchange documents. The table based web is great for that. It's a lot
faster and cheaper than using snail mail.

The audience will be somewhat more limited. There is the language
issue but there are translation programs; even though the quality
degrades rapidly as the material becomes more complex. And of course
what is now known as accessibility would further reduce the audience
-- visual problems, motor issues, etc.

Of course you could use screen readers to compensate for a lot of the
latte. Serialization is pretty reliable. But now and then you can get
odd results. The same kind of results you get when using wysiwyg
editors to compose. Way to often the editor simply corrects your code
because it knows better what it is you "really" wanted to code.

And that's the problem with tables. What you see isn't really what you
get. A lot of it is guess work by the browser. Unclosed tags force
guesses as to where the ending should be. Mostly browsers and screen
readers are good at this. If that's acceptable, and it is for many
very large corporations and a lot of government operations as well,
then keep using table based layouts.

If on the other hand, accessibility and portability are concerns, it's
time to look at the semantic web. Here data is the focus so increased
precision in the use of elements is required. Elements need beginning
and ends. Certain elements have particular functions assigned to them;
although some of the functions are so vaguely worded as to be pretty
much useless. Lists which do this and that among other uses are a bit
suspect for precision.

Similarly tables for layout have the same problem. At some point the
browser is guessing at what the author means; never a good idea. Plus
tables have a mathematical meaning by which the data in a cell is
given meaning by the axis of the table. How's a poor little browser to
know which meaning of table to apply? Is it layout or is it data? Only
the author knows for sure and hasn't been kind enough to share that
with the rest of us. Unfortunate but not fatal if you can see the page
you can usually get the gist. If not, oh well.

In some ways this is a bit of a red herring anyways. The semantic web
is about data -- unlocking the data hidden in applications. It does
this through the use of RDF and OWL. The of precise elements supports
this but doesn't define it. The w3c probably says it best (something
which might actually be considered a significant accomplishment in and
of itself):

"The Semantic Web is about two things. It is about common formats for
integration and combination of data drawn from diverse sources, where
on the original Web mainly concentrated on the interchange of
documents. It is also about language for recording how the data
relates to real world objects. That allows a person, or a machine, to
start off in one database, and then move through an unending set of
databases which are connected not by wires but by being about the same
thing."
http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/

Its the ontologies and the reliably represented information that make
the semantic web work. Its the precision rdf and owl offer which
almost incidentally solve accessibility - the data is there its just a
matter of finding the ontology which makes it understandable. That
single page is rich in resources and will help get you passed the
puffery now common in the endless rehashing of which is more semantic.
Skip that stuff, get the essence and then decide in which web you want
to work.

I don't know what happened w/mine but I do have my external drive
back. Seems to have come back all on it's own. Strange.

:: Deb | PBC Web Design

This isn't really strange at all. It's a matter of recognizing the
drive and enumerating the content. For example, when you put in a cd
there is a moment when the searching flashlight icon shows before the
content of the cd is listed. Also there are times when you click on
Windows Explorer and get the flashlight while the explorer program
busily goes about its business of creating the folder or tree view.

With a usb connection, it's the same thing. Usb is built for quick
connections and that's the case with such small things as flash
drives, keyboards, printers etc. A big/large/humongous/ginormous
external drive with all those files, pictures, sound files, movies on
it takes time to enumerate.

And sometimes when you use more than one usb device, windows "expects"
it in a particular port. You may then see two removable devices, with
different drive letters, even though only one is actually plugged in.
I've got one machine where the camera works in one port and the thumb
drive in another and I lack the patience to wait them out if I switch
the connections. OS helpfulness is sometimes a mixed blessing.

Wikipedia has a very nice piece on usb if you are interested in some
of the history and technical details.

Interesting question.

Anything like a calendar would require maintenance. How likely is the
restaurant to bother to update the web site? How likely are they to
engage your services to do that and to remember to tell you to do so?

You'd have to make a virtue of being closed. Something like:

"We are often fully booked for the evening for private parties. Please
call ahead to check seating availability. We'd hate to have you make
the trip only to find out we're hosting a private party."

Usually the sql administrative transparently manages the database

care of the rest so that you never need to know the name of the sql
server. The sql server and webserver should be different.

While I've never used it, it is my understanding that such management

Thanks,

There is typically an interface with the backup software. If the
Seagate is the drive to which the backup has been sent, that's where
you should look for the backups. To test you can select a directory on
the backup drive and restore it to a different location on the active
pc. Doesn't have to be a lot of information, just enough to show it
works. Maybe a small documents file restored to "test directory".

Normally you just drill down to the directory you want and specify the
path to where you want the information restored and click "go",
"start", "restore" or whatever is appropriate. I

The interface should also allow you to review what is being backed up
and what the schedule is in case you need to make changes. This will
give you the most recent backup date, etc. If 11/20 is the last actual
backup, you'll probably want to recommend a change in the schedule:
weekly incremental is common.

It's good to have the manual for all of this and with luck it will be
available online if you can't locate it.Otherwise post what the backup
software is and likely someone has experience with it or the manual.

Don't know what you mean about 'bypassing' the website.

The script is most likely located in the cgi-bin for an apache server
or some other directory on an iis server. That is, it should be on the
same server as the web page in which it is embedded. So yes, using
10.1.111.2/scriptpage.html would be the same as
http://www.example.org/scriptpage.html, for example. Normally, the IP
is part of the original documentation provided by the isp. If your isp
uses host headers, that should be dealt with in the same
documentation.

So the company site has been moved to a new location and you can't get

Your machine would not be the only place the old address is cached.
The dns server with authority for your location (your isp) very likely
has the old address cached as well. If others can't get there that
would indicate a caching problem at the isp. Try using the IP not the
friendly address. That is get the actual IP numbers, the
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx octects and use those.

Mapping is a network function. Access to resources is controlled by
network security settings so you have to be logged into the network.
And if you are using private network addresses behind an internal
router, the packets won't go anyway.

That's easy enough to arrange. Just hack your sever to allow everyone
to telnet. Then you and anyone else who's interested can login and
have a look around your server.

Alternatively if you don't want to share, there is vpn. It can be
costly but you can keep the rest of us riff-raff out.

Mostly, you'll be stuck with what you are doing. Cumbersome but
reasonably secure. You can never tell what kind of guests the rest of
us would be.

It sounds as if your daughter didn't actually enable the add-ons.
First part of enabling is to click on the "Enable or disable Add-ons"
choice. This does the enabling. A reboot is reuired then the "Manage
add-ons" selection works. This seems counterintuitive but much of t he
security enhancements you see as an end user in Vista (and IE7 as
designed for Vista) have a certain counterintuitive element about
them.

It's far more robust and by adding either Sunbird or Lightning you get

Thunderbird has a nice baysian anti-spam system which learns quickly.
The interface will look familiar but easier to navigate. Setup is

The effect was to completely jam the machine [Xp SP2, Dell]. Is
there a solution which a) saves the information or b) loses the

Or should I go to he newest Firefox, Vista is it?

Yours, M$-ered,

Both Opera's and Firefox's latest versions (8 and 9, and 2
respectively) will save your tabs during a crash or a normal shutdown.
When you reopen the browsers there is an option to continue 'last
session'. Updating versions also preserves settings for both browsers.

Are you saying that FF just suddenly started to open more and more
browser sessions? Or that you keep opening multiple sessions rather
than tabbing? Opening 40 or more tabs would make it hard for me to
keep track of things. That's a lot of system resources to use. It's
not surprising the machine broke down.

I've only seen multiple uncontrolled openings like that on Konquerer
(Linux browser) when plug-ins like Flash insist they need to installed
immediately.

You might want to think about updating to a version where the tabs are
preserved. And Vista is the new MS operating system, not a browser.

The Help Files at Start | Programs | Microsoft SQL Server 2005 |

answers?

I installed 2005 on a machine which has 2003 and the Enterprise
Manager for our 2000 sql servers. The connections to the existing
databases were detected and configured. I can see the connections in
the TCP/IP under the SQL Native Client Configuration | Client
Protocols, Properties as being active and enabled on port 1433. Plus
the Express connections properties show as not enabled.

Local files are available and interestingly throw all sorts of errors
related to standards. In fact the vast number of errors caused me to
simply abandon 2005 on this project until it gets rewritten. It's one
I originally wrote in cf and was rewritten in classic asp and then had
asp.net added (3 people between me and me). Now it's back to me but I
don't think I'll move it back to cf; just patch and then remix in
asp.net in Studio 2005.

On my non-server machine, a similar result obtained. The connections
to the 2000 sql server are active and enabled and the Express
connections are not enabled. Checked again using the Sql Server
Configuration Manager and looking at the protocols. This machine does
not have Enterprise Manager.

So in both cases, the Express seems to be disabled.

Anybody else have installation experiences with Studio 2005 that might
help Diane?

That's why you need to search for the exe for the missing programs.
For IE it's iexplore.exe. Your anti-virus should have taken care of
any possibility of Kama Sutra or anything else.

Installed any new toolbars lately? Could such a toolbar or desktop
management tool have hidden the files? New music/multimedia manager?
Might be worth a check on the My Computer |Tools | Folder Options.

Re: [wdvltalk] Web login system - best approach

2006-11-06 Thread Drew Trusz

On 11/6/06, Ross Clutterbuck <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Previously, I have an Access database storing the login information which is
accessed through ASP. This database is stored in a folder outside of the
domain hosting area so you can't physically access it through the website's
URL. The ASP script accesses the file through the server's file system using
Server.MapPath.

My problem now is twofold: firstly, I don't have this sort of access to the
server and second it's likely that I have to use PHP and MySQL.

I've started playing with MySQL recently for a Flash-fronted CMS project and
I'm fairly comfortable with it for the basic uses I have in mind, but I have
difficulty getting my head around creating a database - it's a bit odd not
having a tangible, MDB-esque file I can just drop into a directory.

So in a nutshell, what's the best way of doing a user/password login using
PHP/MySQL?

TIA

MOU

The ISP should provide some form of mysql admin tool (myphpadmin is a
popular one) which you can use to manage the db. Building the db using
myphpadmin is easy. You can look at the entire db as well, just like
you did for access. Easy to do and manage with a good tool.

Learn the syntax, or borrow heavily from good examples. If you use asp
a lot you'll find the syntax of php as annoying at times as php
users find asp. But it will be managabke. Start with a good example,
as Tris suggested, and just be sure to practice reasonable security:
use post, check user input, use secure connection. You know the drill.

There are or were some very good php and sql people here who can keep
you from sweating over the details. It'll be a lot less of a trial
than you fear.

Not good in IE6. The background of the nav list jumps all over the
place. This probably has to do with the layout you are using (see
below).

First you need a complete doctype to get IE out of quirks mode.

You might be having a variation of the listbug problem. This results
from using relative positioning within a floated div, exactly what you
are doing with the nav list. Have a look at this and see if it helps:

http://www.positioniseverything.net/explorer/ie-listbug.html

The other choice is to redesign. You might want to consider something like this:

1. wrapper with auto margins and fixed percentage or px width so the
stripped background still shows.
2. logo in a div
3. another wrapper with a margin to preserve that very nice
separation effect between logo and main body. Use the grey background
for this wrapper.
4. float the nav left without the relative positioning.
5. float another box (I'd float them both left but that's my
preference). Put the strip of photos at the top of the box. Then do
the main text (welcome to.). You'll probably need a clear inside
this box to give it height before you move to the footer.
6. footer. Clear this and see if it works first with the clear in #5
and then without that clear. This is an industrial strength solution
for clearing -- it works in browsers without having to resort to
browser particular hacks which blow up in later versions.

Microsoft recommends you put IE6 on a virtual machine.

Couple of options, most of which are probably more trouble than your
friends want to deal with. Set the firewall to block port 80. The
parents will have to log into the firewall to turn it on when they use
it and remember to turn it back off again.

If it's an xp pro edition, look at the local policies to edit them to
disable IE. I don't think this can be done on the home edition. This
link looks at some of the ways to do this:

Don't have any recommendations for nanny's since I don't have anyone
that needs minding; they are all old enough so I can ask them to take
care of me.

On 6/30/06, Portman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Thanks Drew. I am a little unclear (no pun intended) on the clearing,

Riva

Two major points about positioning and clearing. First is that
absolute and float take elements out of the normal flow of the
document. While the placement of such elements is respected, normal
content will attempt to fill any gaps left by such non-normal blocks.
So when a positioned element doesn't take up the entire width of the
document, the normal content will try to squeeze into the empty space.

A clear will tell the browser to not do that but instead to drop below
the non-normal element.

That would be easy to handle. So just to make it interesting, there
are times when browsers (yes IE is the most egregious) will decide
that floats in particular have no content, no matter what you think
you've put in them. Content of such floats are rendered as normal
flow, with often astonishing visual results. The cure for that is to
put an otherwise empty clear within the float.

While it is possible to deal with the discreet conditions which cause
this in an elegant fashion you should be forewarned that when IE7
arrives, many of these elegant solutions won't function properly. It's
easier to use the industrial strength solution of an empty float
element and bare the shame of being accused of classitis or divitis by
the purists.

A good explanation of floats is found at:

http://www.brainjar.com/css/positioning/

If you want the details of why you have the problem in the first
place, this will do

There used to be some good pieces on Position is Everything but those
articles now seem to be for sale.

quick links or click here
 for more
detailed links. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm a bit behind in my reading so this is a bit late.

The page is having problems in FF1.5 and Opera9. Essentially, the few
links which show are in the header and the area of the page below the
"Links" title is blank. Looks fine in IE.

When I put borders around the headermain, subheader and bodytext, the
boxes are problematic. That is, border doesn't go all the way around
either the headermain or the bodytext. The subheader is comletely
contained in the border. The links are shoved into the header box.

In a floated design this would be the result of improper clearing.
Your design seems to be primarily absolutely and relatively positioned
elements. Relative is often used to compensate for many IE problems.
If that's what you've done, it's created severe problems in other
browsers. Nonetheless, if anything is floated, you might want to
check that it is properly cleared. Drop in a few clearing elements and
see if it helps.

Re: [wdvltalk] Need CSS help

2006-06-20 Thread Drew Trusz

On 6/19/06, Diane Schips <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I know I'm behind the times, but this is my first attempt to design a
site in CSS. I'm having a problem with this layout:
https://secure.enticedbynature.com/Soap.asp. The blue on the left is
supposed to go all the way to the bottom. But if the content area gets
too long, it stops before the bottom of the page.

My style sheet is below. I'm sure there are lots of better ways to do
what I did, so I would welcome any feedback on it.

You'll notice I have two body styles, that's because the first style is
always ignored. I don't know why that happens either.

First attempts with css are generally unpleasant. The difference in
concepts between a table and tableless orientation is significant. You
design contains 6 nested tables, according to Opera so this will take
some doing.

The next thing is to understand the concept of the faux columns. This
technique requires setting the body background to the color of the
shortest column and then changing the background of the longer
columns. This can be done both for absolute and liquid designs.

An good source for understanding different designs can still be found at:
http://www.positioniseverything.net
The site also has a good discussion on floats.

I'd suggest that you put colored borders around each of your divisions
so you can see just exactly what it is you've done. All to often the
results are vastly different from the intent. Working out what has
gone wrong will solve many problems.

I'd suggest you go all the way and dump the tables. If you want to use
this as a learning lab, replacing the tables would be a good thing to
to work on. You'll get lots of suggestions here on how to do that.

So start by adding that doctype then put borders around you divisions
and see what you've got. FF is a good browser for doing this kind of
thing since tyou can edit the css on the fly (tools |web developer
|css |edit css).

For me it only works in IE.

Opera 8.52 doesn't show the main text headings(Head, Chest etc) but
several of the submenues will display when the appropriate portion of
the body image is clicked. But not all of the submenus display.

FF and Moz are even worse. No main headings and no submenues.

The javascript console on FF, not surprisingly, shows a lot of errors.
The first is that the the swapImage is not defined. 4 such errors in
Line 1. No image; no swap. The rest of the errors have to do with
unknown properties causing declarations to be dropped; which would
cause problems with displaying things. Have a look yourself.

The problem then seems to be that the js is sufficiently at odds with
ecma standards so as to cause failure in more modern browsers.
Dreamweaver is not the most standards friendly text editor. You may
have to redo the js to get it to work. I don't have a handy
replacement script but I imagine someone here does or can point you to
a good resource.

Done with the gimp? Nicely so. It isn't "fuzzy" more muted like the

The font setting is under Tools | Options then Fonts & Colors --

for allowing pages to choose their own size instead of your

Positioning works. You are going to move all the style statements into
the css files? Leaving all those styles and spans is not good.

The xml prolog and IE quirks mode matter remains.

And while it isn't likely to be related to the prolog business, I
don't get either the logo image or the background for the nav in IE.

Really, really bad thing - font sized fixed in px. Switch to em.
Leave it to the end user to decide how big the font should be.

Beyond that it's just a matter of personal taste about how it looks.
And it looks okay to me. I wouldn't run from the site based on how it
looks.

That explains it.

The caution about the prolog still stands. Support for xml in
browsers is pretty much current generation so most older browsers
won't handle an xml page. If you haven't already, see:

http://www.w3schools.com/xml/xml_browsers.asp

If you want to learn a bit more about possible ways to deal with IE,
http://www.positioniseverything.net , is always a good start. The IE
section explains what IE does very clearly. It also offers a number of
hacks. Keep in mind that the hacks may or may not work with IE7. There
are other perfectly valid ways to handle many of the problems without
the hacks. Be forewarned some of those ways will raise accusations of
sinful if not outrightly perverted syntax, even though the syntax is
perfectly valid -- divitis and excessive markup.

Good luck with the update.

Nothing wrong with the color pallette; it works fine.

The appearance issues have been well covered and David has made a good
start on the technical. From a technical point of view, drop the xml
prolog, it's unnecessary unless the pages are being servedf as
applicaltion/ xhtml+xml. All this does otherwise is to throw IE into
quirks mode, which might explain some of the IE issues you hint at. Go
all the way and go for the strict; html would be fine.

Most importantly, this is not tabular data so why is it a table
layout? There is a certain inconsistency between proclaim xhtml
validity and using a layout antithetical to the spirit of xhtml. Your
table is rife with font tags. Why?

And there are lovely arcane debates which can be engaged in over the
use of strong versus a span. And the perpetual favorites about when
markup crosses the line between semantic and styling. Those are fun
but really not the issue of the moment.

Seriously, why tables? This is a pretty basic two column layout which
is easily managable with floats and em for width (centering is a piece
of cake). If you haven't already, check out some of the layouts on
position is everything http://www.positioniseverything.net Or ask
here. You know we aren't shy about helping.

That said, it looks good. I don't see the jumps but then eyes vary.

You have such interesting problems, Riva.

Are you saying she has a u3 with Migo on it? That arrangement is new
to the market. Haven't seen it much less used it. If she is trying to
use a Migo drive to sync a separate u3, I don't think that will work.
Migo is a portable profile and data system. u3 is a protable app and
data system. The two are now being combined by some vendors. If she
has the combined system, a call to tech support would seem in order.

She could have something on the u3 which isn't playing nice with the
laptop. It's hard to guess without knowing what's on the u3. Best
general advice would be to uninstall and reinstall the wireless card.
And to check her settings for remote desktop on the laptop, in
particular which users are allowed to use remote.

Really interesting stuff that u3.

If you are going to use phmysql admin to manage the databases, here's

There are also a number of very skilled php people on this list who
will, I'm sure, be happy to help.

This is the MS guide to setting up a home network. It's a good how to
beginning with installing a nic and finishing with printer sharing.
Have a look at it using IE since FF has some trouble with some of the
"features" of the pages.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813936/en-us

And please be sure that you have a router between your network and the
cable modem. As Mark's cited article points out, using anything other
that a router (like a swithc or hub) just opens your machines to the
world.

When you are describing how you share, it sounds at times as if you
expect the shared folder to be duplicated on another machine. That
doesn't happen. The shared folder remains on its own machine. What
sharing does is let you see that directory and its contents from
another machine. If you add to the shared folder there is no need to
do more than refresh your share on the other machine to see the new
content.

The reason you create a share on each machine is so that the human can
see the shares in "my computer". Each share is identified as being on
a particular machine again for the convenience of the humans.

If you want to name all of the shared files the same, go ahead. They
will be identified by the computer name. Just don't expect to find
files in "shared on desktop" in "shared on laptop". That isn't how it
works.

If that's too simplistic, I appologize. But at times you seem to be
expecting that to happen. At other times you seem to understand the
process fully. Remote troubleshooting often trips over things like
this.

Follow the MS steps and it should fix all your problems.

Have a look at CIHost. Check the "details" on their "Innovator". The
db is based on total size. Often if you talk to them or email in your
case, you can work something out.

Joseph, sadly for you, Peter and the rest of us, short of major
changes in how mail is processed, we can't eliminate spam. Even if
every mail server were properly configured (and we are a long way from
that), unless people stop responding, you can't eliminate spam. Spam
exists because it makes money.

You can cut down the amount you receive. One way is to let your email
client filter the mail along with insisting your isp do so or
changing to an isp which does. If you insist on using Outlook, here's
MS's version of how to filter:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010450041033.aspx

In general, this wikipedia entry may be of help. Bayesian filters are
particularly popular and seem to be extremely effective:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail_filter

If you want a hardware solution much like a Bayesian filter, try Deep
Six Technology:(its impressive but really meant for large scale
operations, but even with that market it's cheap -- if much to much
for most home applications -- $999US)

http://www.deep6tech.com/

Finally, if you want to let others know about spammers, check the
google directory for those blacklists which seem to make sense to you:

http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Abuse/Spam/Blacklists/

Beyond this, there are other techniques advocated for obscuring email
addresses. They take more effort than they are worth in general. But
that's a matter of personal choice. Mostly you just have to live with
it.

You have a workgroup not a network. No server, no network. The
machines have to be made aware of each other and resources have to be
properly shared.

Here's a good how to which will work for wireless:

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/home-network.htm

Do it step-by-step for what you have. I'd suggest reading it through
before starting. Ask any further questions that come up.

Start by moving your swap file to the larger drive. If you've not done
it berfore, the windows help files can walk you through it.

You might want to consider moving your "Documents and Settings" to the
larger drive as well.

The MS Knowledge Base has a variety of articles you might want to
investigate dealing with low disk space.
