As I mentioned some of the components of the signal are compressed and
some aren't. One dilemma is uncompressing the right bits of a complex
signal. Another dilemma is figuring out exactly what manner of
compression was applied to begin with.

exactly how they sound different. Many people do so. Talk is cheap. But
I haven't heard of anyone doing the harder trick of backing up big
words with a demonstration, and that is where the argument rests from

the protocol doesn't specify a data rate. Because the clock is simply
extracted from the data signal.
However, 20 bits is part of the standard with an option for up to 24
bits dependent on equipment.

source. IMO degradation of signal from the simple attenuator is probably
