It's above the baby stay and below the jib halyard. What's it purpose?

Good to see another LF 35 owner on the list!
The Landfall 35 has teak capped toe rails, so we get the joy of varnishing

You are more than welcome to come over and push buttons, Russ !
This one has me perplexed. I even aligned it straight on into the wind.
SB Tack shows 30° Close hauled, PT shows 60° Close Hauled maybe you are
onto something!

I had to pull the one on my 37 two years ago. Hard part is reaching up
underneath to undo the nuts. I also had to use some heat to get the pulpit
out. Local place sandblasted and powder coated the new one.
Are you doing toe rails too?

Compared to all the long-time veterans on this list, this is only my fourth
year at it (Wednesday night racing). For three years before buying my 30-1 this
year, I crewed on OPBs - Merit 25s, J/22s, Capri 22s as trimmer, helmsman, and
sometimes foredeck.
And Chuck, you sly dog. You never let
I raced in a Wednesday fleet a few years ago but at this point Wednesday

I'm curious: How many of you guys race every Wednesday night?
Started one night a week, either Tuesday in white sail or Wednesday
in flying sail, in 2000. Sailed both nights staring 2004, then bought
the boat in 2009. A couple of years ago the club offered a flying sail
start on Tuesdays
I've raced in the evening series on the Columbia since my early 20's. I am
74 now.
In 1998 I bought a Cal 20 with 2 long time sailing buddies and have raced
on Thursday evenings from spring through the summer in a fleet 10 to 15
Cals ever since.
In June I race my 44 in a Wednesday evening club
+1. On Chatfield Reservoir in Colorado. April 20th through September 7th this
year. Plus various weekend races. Plus a fall series consisting of five Sunday
afternoons.

Absolutely possible! Two weeks ago in the Gulfport Pensacola Race we had a
~1 knot favorable current. The wind was only 1-4 knots. Our speed through
the water was as low as 1.5 knots. Had the current been the other way, we
were prepared to anchor and wait for more wind.
In years past, boats

And yes, a very old drive. I may need to send it to Canada for repair/refurb,
but wanted to see if any suggestions hit before I disconnect the hoses and
wires.

Edd — the Octopus drives only have about eight moving parts, so there’s not a
lot that can fail on them. This is an older Octopus drive, right? Maybe it
would be worth sending it to them for diagnosis and possible repair/refurb.
Also, have you checked voltage at the solenoid and drive leads
I agree with Josh, that is just iron deposited from an unfortunate incident.
Sand it off, and go to a grit you are happy with, and soak it with something
acidic to remove surface iron, a poor man's passivation. You can then
polish it if you like. I am sure it is fine.

Listers,
Thanks to the advice here and from Gary at Octopus, I did some testing. I was
able to get the solenoid on the Octopus drive to click on and off, and the
autopilot did get the motor on the drive going (I could hear it.)
But, the wheel did not move. I added some hydraulic oil, but
That sounds like you could possibly win a race by anchoring!

I would try to sand/polish the plate clean and smooth before moving
forward. Work from 200 grit all the way up to 1000 or 2000 and then hand
polish. You'll be amazed at how much more you can tell about the area of
concern. It could just be a place where a steel cable deposited iron in
the metal
