Since I have incurred a situation at lest 3 times on my K3S, since it might
help someone I thought I would share some info. On occasion I need to un-cable
the K3S when working an something and like a fool thinking when I put it all
back together it is going to work first time. I do have
I have had my K3S about 6 months and working with WSJT and DX Lab have used it
with serial data for radio control plus RTS PTT with USB audio. I have tried
several times to convert to just USB alone but I am always stymied when
choosing RTS for PTT. I can use USB for Data and Audio fine but

As previously posted the problem had nothing to do with CODEC or the K3S.
Problem turned out to be the time update of the computer by Dimension 4. I had
it set for updates every 1 sec as I didn’t think that was a problem. I now
have it set for 30 Mins and probably and hour would not hurt
Well the good news is that the K3S has nothing to do with my Rate In/Out
numbers jumping out of range. The reason I say that is I was watching
the WSJT-10 program with the K3S powered off and the were still jumping
out of range. When seeing that I decided to check the analog audio
again and
I have used for years a K3 on EME with WSJT using Line In/Out audio. Recently
got a K3S and I am now using USB (CODEC) audio in and out of the radio. In
WSJT-10 they have Rate In/Rate Out monitors that should normally run at 1.000.
Using the K3 analog audio these always stayed right on 1.000
I have a K3 I am planning on selling to a local here but want to get
some input as to a fair price. I have looked at many ads for used gear
but with the many variation of the K3 it is hard to come up with a
price. I have a K3 SN 5895 that was factory assembled with the KAT3,
KIO3, and KSYN3A
I was doing some power line noise tracking with my AM VHF radio and brought it
into the shack and laid it on the desk with no antenna and started receiving a
loud buzz from it. The tracker radio was tuned in the 135 Mhz area. I moved
it around to all the suspects like computer monitors, TV,
I would like to exchange mail off line with someone using the K3 with a single
receiver option that is interfaced to DX4WIN logging program. Also another
qualifier is that they use the REV button in often in working pileups. 73 Mike

When using SPLIT, and using the REV button to listen the pileup I often get
disconnected from my logging program. I use DX4WIN and have tried different
polling rates. It does not always happen as when I try to duplicate it I can
hit REV 50 or 60 times but then when working a pile up out of
If you just punch the XMIT button it just puts the K3 into xmit with no RF out
but if you hold the XMIT/TUNE button for 2 seconds or so I will put out RF so
you can tune an amp or whatever. I find this an extremely useful function and
use both often. 73 Mike K4PI
I have the heavy weighted CNC knobs on both my K3’s but always missed having a
rubber grip ring. Thanks to K8JHR, although not an Elecraft owner, put me onto
some knob trim rings that Ten Tec sells. He sent me one to try, and although a
tight fit it does fit onto the CNC. I love it. You can
I have had a set for over a year with no problems. I would have never bought a
set but once I felt the difference on one actually mounted on a K3 at Dayton I
had to have one. I bought a second set this year. I’ll never go back to the
originals. They just have a dead feel. Something hard to
In regard to dipping the knobs, that would only make a slick rubber surface.
All the radios that have the rubber tire have a hatch work pattern in the tire
for grip. I don’t think the slick rubber would be any better than the metal
surface I have. 73 Mike K4PI
I have used several computer type mics on the back input as long as they are a
1/8 mono plug and the bias is turned on for the electret types. They have all
worked fine for me but to get them to sound better setting up the mic
equalization in the Main Menu is needed. I am using an AntLion at
the equalization
mic menu I am very happy with it. I have it set up for pile ups.HI. 73 Mike

Mike,
have you tried the Headsetbuddy option? I just
works okay
but the one Headset Buddy has is more elegant for sure. I may have to think
about it. It looks really neat and I like using the QC15. 73 Mike K4PI

I just received a new K3 S/N 7604. I am noticing the front panel is running
very warm. It has the second receiver installed so that might be a reason. I
have another K3 without the second receiver and it is very cool with a reading
of 36 C for the front panel but the new one is showing 61 C.
Thanks for all the responses. The new K3 was way out of calibration and I
think it was done by me accidentally. I recalibrated both K3’s in a 80 F deg
room. The old one with no sub running around 37 C and the new one 39 C after
over an hour powered on. 73 Mike K4PI
I have a LP Pan set up for the K3 and a Creative Labs EMU 0204 outboard sound
card for sale. The LP Pan has the preamp mod installed. Audio cables from the
Pan to the EMU only.
$225 for both plus shipping. Contact me at k...@bellsouth.net
I have had several suggestions but nothing to correct the problem. I am using

and you miss the first or second letter of many returning callers. Speed
increase is a solution but not what is needed. Sending 24 WPM
I noticed when using my memories on the K3, the keying line to the amp drops in
between some words. Even if I hold the foot switch down it will not hold he
relay in. If I try to invoke the XMIT switch during the memory run that kicks
the memory our of run mode.Of course I could run CW
My K3 has the KAT3 and I am using the external PR6 via the RX ant. On 6 M if I
have the antenna on Port 2 everything works correctly as the signal goes up in
strength when I select RX bringing in the PR6. If the antenna is on Port 1 I
get the opposite effect. The signal goes down at least 4

I use 350 hz pitch and with a decent signal the APF works okay although its not

hard for me to tell when the stations stops sending, ie the ring from noise

I know the thread was originally on the KX3 but wanted to send out info on a

I fought the same problem Dave W8FGU had and also tracked it to the cables for
the P3. The connectors on the cable were inferior to Amphenol’s in that there
was no tension in the connector when seating them and thus there was eventually
a poor connection to the shield. Whenever the problem
I use a board sold by W3YY for interfacing RTTY/PTT/CW. I also built into the
box housing a 12 V fan out for P3/PR6 and AUX and plug the main into the K3 12
V ACC. Also D connector for the PR6 connection and another D connector for
band out data to a DX Eng antenna switch. Made a nice
Has anyone done a check on the input impedance of the receive antenna port? My
crude check showed around 33 ohms. Just curious. 73 Mike K4PI

Without going into a long story why I need this, is there anyway to change the
band decode outputs? Just need to change 6 M to 60 M decode. Probably not
possible by firmware but thought I would ask. I can do it externally but it
would make things easier to have the K3 send the code I want.
I bought a new mic and decided to set it up using equalization for “pile up”
mode. I had always ran equalization at 0 across the board previously.
Everything went well until this morning I switched over to PSK31 with the audio
coming in on LINE IN. I kept having issues with being able to set
Lyle KK7P informed me about the DATA A option. That should take care of my
