They are spangled bobbins with an "A" stamped at the base.

My bobbins arrived today & I am thrilled! John Aebi kindly made a few pairs of
Downton, Devon & Malmesbury bobbins to go with my lace samples so I posted pics
to Arachne Flickr. The Downton ones are bird's eye maple--spotted, sort of like
the nitric acid/Aqua Fortis effect. Way cool. The others

As both a bobbin lacemaker and a tatter, I would say that all items like that
are meant to be used. There's something ethereal about using a 'tool' that
has seen other hands on it over a number of years. I would repair a spangle
that broke, using the original beads where possble.

I am not a collector of antiques so I may not be in line with the value of
antiques, but I do not see the point in keeping something that is broken,
unless it is to prove some point about it's manufacture.
Lace bobbins should be used and loved, just as they were in their heyday.
Brian asked whether we should restore old bobbins or leave them in poor
state.
I think you should ask why you want the bobbin. Do you collect bobbins as a
collection of old bobbins or is this bobbin one you want to use? If it the
latter, then a certain amount of restoration is necessary.

There don't appear to be any holes or grooves to secure the various pieces.
But if secured on a base, perhaps they were part of an Aeolian Harp? The holes

For lace with numerous sewings I like to use Duchesse or Bruges bobbins
depending on the weight of the thread. For very fine thread I will use
Honiton bobbins especially if a large number of bobbins are needed as they
are slim and one can accommodate many bobbins on the pillow.
I prefer to use the Italian Cantu bobbins when I have lots of sewings. Besides
they make the most beautiful sound while I am working.

A little while ago someone on Arachne asked about Binche bobbins. In sorting
through some of my -extensive- bobbin collection I came accross some packs
of new Binche bobbins. They were bought a while ago for my own use but I use
the slightly heavier Duchesse bobbins. I have poste

Quite fascinating, especially to learn that they came with spools!
The style of bobbin is a well known style and I doubt if we pulled the heads
of these bobbins they would come apart

style was made for this system.
