It depends what OS you're using, but with Windows 9x you have to open up a
folder in Explorer (C:\ will work) and click View --> Folder Options, then
select the File Typ
They don't likely want you pluggin in because they need all the channels on
the board they use, and an extra minidisc, if someone else doesn't know
that's in charge, would likely be a pain. Just one more thing the sound guy
would have to worry about, that's all.

I am a little surprised that the frequency response isn't a little better

If you remove a label, it is possible to remove all the crap and glue from
the MD using any household polish. I know this sounds weird, but all the
glue and paper soak up the polish and using a cloth or tissue will wipe the
stuff off.
