Yes, there is a device called the DATport that will
output a digital signal (spdif) from any usb connection.
The same company (sorry ican't recall the name
right now) also makes one called the Socnicport
which is a TOSlink output...

I'm not sure what current policy is, but back when I worked at bestbuy

I roughly recall hearing similar stories with a number of different units

Neither the CD player or the R90 are at fault.
as a proud owner of an R50 I have to say it is cooler than the
R55. The R55 is smaller and does have the backlit remote
it loses out on battery life and ease of use (jog dial)
The nearest replacement to it is the R37 which isn't in competition
with the R50 but with the R35 which it replaced.

I'm not terribly suprised. They are one of the worst places
for making good marketing decisions. Hell look at when they stopped

Most of the md stores one the net carry them in the "spare/misc" section.
I know minidiscnow.com carries them, and I've seen them at a few other

Usually they run around 45-60 bucks...

make sure you're using the discman while it's plugged into
an AC adaptor. I've heard a few things about optical being
turned off while in battery mode. Not sure if this is the case
with all portables, but worth looking into. You might be able
to fool it if you run from battery but have the
