Do you have a Win98 boot disk or can you get a friend to make you one?
Yes.
Boot your machine from this disk and use fdisk to create 2 partitions of
roughly the same 2GB size.
Install Win2000 in one of the partitions, it does not matter which. I

I use KDE so I am not exactly sure how you work it in GNOME but after you
enable system sound you still need to associate a sound file with each event
that you want sound. Start-up, logout, max, min, and so on.

An added note on PM. If you let the Mandrake installation create your
Linux partitions then PM will see them all as 1 Type 85 partition and you
will not be make any changes to the partitions using PM. You will instead
need to use DiskDrake

I should have mentioned that I installed
Helix GNOME IS a specific build of GNOME. It has features and abilities that
no other GNOME distro has.
Helix is to GNOME as Mandrake is to RH.
