opportunity to try all sorts of things, like say, a 180/2.8 Zeiss. Biggest
downside: stop down metering only. I keep one on an old ME body all the time.

Don´t know about the viewfinder compared with those Nikons or PZ-1p but it compares
favourably with Pentaxes I have owned (LX, ME, ME Super).
AF is fast and certainly on par with everything - except possibly Nikon F5. It is even
faster if you disable the automatic sensor selection.

BTW, when I once had to have the top replaced, the repairman only had a set
determined for a Z-1 75th anniversary model in stock. :-) Not sure if it's a

I believe that's correct... the CL was doing SO well.. it actually was
outselling (if my memory of Stephen Gandy's website and other sources is
correct) the "other" Leica's of it's time (M4 and later the "failed" M5)..
I'm no expert.. but that's what I can remember..

Actually, the Z-1 and the whole Z-series has been controversial since this forum
started.
The Z-series was direct reason as to why Pentax dissapeared from the slr map. It's

collector's items Leitz has produced, I can see where you'd get
that idea. Their lenses are absolutely first rate, however, and
worth the price if you can afford them.
