delete the qgis.org/debian entries from sources.list, and follow the
advices here:

This is no problem at all. I also have
Qgis 1.8.0 Stand alone installer in
Polarstreographic did not project correctly with less than half
the meridians and no latitudes.
I do the vectorgrid with polygons instead of lines, and the result looks
quiet good, depending on the grid width.
