Last I heard, XFree86 (or was it X more generally) has a limit of 5

(Xpert-99 iirc). The limit here is the size of memory.
My Intel i815 (on an Eastern motherboard) seems to be limited to 1200
vertical.

Do you have both /etc/X11/XF86Config and /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 ?
Are you changing the one that the server is reading (look in
/var/log/XFree86.?.log to see which the server is using).

I note that Matt Sottek of Intel, has problems with the idea of
clients using arbitrary modelines on the fly; since one of the reasons
apps use DGA is to control screen resolution, is that a problem ?

I believe they use the standard XFree86 source tree, but I assume
that they use a gcc based compiler.

More generally, laptops have a limited warantee on the flat panel back
light, and often recommend that you turn them off when not in use.

o hard rule about this yet, on many laptops DDC info
applies to any external monitor, not to the built in screen.
This should be seen as reporting that there is no (DDC-compilant)
external monitor, not a failure of DDC.
