Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Monday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope your weekend was good. And did you bag the winner in the
Grand National? We had a sweep here, but I was not the winner of it
unfortunately. I’ve been doing these sweeps for about thirty years now at work
and I’ve never actually won one yet, so I don’t see why this year should be any
different!

Anyway, I hope your weekend was good and here we are at the start of another
week. I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

I’ll have all the day’s news and also tonight, I’ll be speaking with a
Lincolnshire man, who’s so fed up with motorists speeding through his quiet
village of Glentham that he’s built his own fake speed camera. Despite recent
fatal accidents on the roads around the village there were previously no speed
cameras to try and slow motorists down. I’ll be speaking to the Road Safety
Partnership to see what more can be done. More on this later.

Time is also ticking away for the decision about the future of the X1 bus that
travels daily between Grimsby and Hull. I’ll be speaking with the MP Austin
Mitchell on this one.

I’ll also be getting an update on the family, who travelled down to Carlisle to
see the Grimsby Town match at the weekend and I mentioned last week about Look
North’s new series starting where I’m getting all green fingered! I’ll be
introducing our new series with a taste of things to come over the following
weeks. I hope you can join me then.

Rumours

There have been lots of rumours of a possible Royal wedding on the cards.
There’s plenty of coverage of that at the moment. There are pictures of course
of Charles and Camilla one year on. It’s hard to believe isn’t it that it’s a
year since their wedding? Anyway, an official picture was published yesterday
and of course there are the rumours and the strong signals that Prince William
could soon marry Kate Middleton. These rumours have emerged after security
around the pair of them has been tightened up. There are a few Royal stories
from the papers.

Of course, also this weekend, much has been made about the fact that a choc a
day could keep the doctor away. In other words, that a piece of chocolate a day
is now, surprise surprise, good for us! One of the things that’s not so good
for us is smoking of course. And it seems, that if you give up smoking, you put
on weight. Well, there’s pictures in the paper of Charlotte Church, who has
finally given up smoking, but seemingly at the expense of her figure. She is
now really quite rounded and chubby! Anyway, that’s what the papers are saying
about her anyway. The singer had been criticised for damaging her classically
trained voice by puffing away through twenty-five cigarettes a day. She’s now
managed to stop smoking completely, but in the three months since giving up,
she has noticeably gained weight. This is the phenomenon, which puts off many
women from giving up the habit. Well, the health expert, Dr Trisha McNair, said
that giving up smoking often went hand in hand with!
weight gain. She said, “weight control is one of the biggest factors, which
induces people to smoke, especially girls and worries them about giving up, but
with a bit of thought, and some different strategies, you can stop smoking
without putting on weight.” And there’s a picture of Charlotte Church in the
paper and I think she looks absolutely fabulous. So if that’s what giving up
smoking does for you, then that’s not a problem and giving up smoking is the
main thing.

Living Longer

Still on the subject of health, (I’m like Gillian McKeith today aren’t I?),
eating less really can lead to a longer life, so say scientists. The first
study on a calorie controlled diet resulted in reduced signs of ageing. It
found that just six months on the regime cut volunteers’ chances of developing
diseases associated with old age, such as cancer. So there you are. They found
that a fifteen hundred calorie a day diet might include breakfast at three
hundred calories, lunch at four hundred calories – French bread with reduced
fat cheese and pickle, dinner at five hundred and fifty calories – skinless
chicken breast, boiled new potatoes and vegetables, a snack at one hundred and
fifty calories - fruit, wholemeal toast and ham and half a pint of skimmed
milk. Well, that’s what you can have throughout the day at fifteen hundred
calories a day, which will help you live longer. Either that or it’ll feel like
you’re living longer!! Your thoughts on that and indeed on anything !
else, then please email in to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And don’t forget that if you’ve got any photographs that you think I might like
to see – any funny ones or serious ones, or any views for our Big Screen, then
get in touch. Or do you have a problem that you think I might be able to tackle
on your behalf in Leave it to Levy? Then give me the details and also a contact
telephone number as well and I’ll look into it for you. Email me at [EMAIL
PROTECTED]

Pens

Yes, they’ve had plenty of coverage, but the Peter Levy, Levy Letter pens are
still available now to you all as you are subscribers to the Levy Letter. If
you want one, then send me a stamped addressed envelope and send it to Peter
Levy, BBC Look North, Queen's Court, Queen's Gardens, Hull, HU1 3RH. Send me a
stamped addressed envelope and the pen will be sent back to you by return of
post!

Frankie Howard

One of the newspapers this weekend gave away a free DVD of Up Pompeii. I had to
buy the paper just to get the DVD. It’s a classic series of course with Frankie
Howard. I’ve been reading up on Frankie and his house down in the South of
England is just as he left it with his partner. And it’s going to be open for
several days during the summer for people to go and look around. But also
Frankie’s wig was buried in the back garden of this house and they dug the wig
up so it could be on display in the house! It sounds a bit strange doesn’t it?
He’s a very funny guy though. I had the pleasure of meeting him once. I
interviewed him actually in his dressing room at Yorkshire Television. He was
up in Leeds doing 3-2-1 – do you remember that one with Ted Rogers? Well, I
went to interview him and he was a really nice guy – quite a character! He was
a complex sort of man, and serious as well, but he did a great interview and he
was great to talk to. But his house is now going to be open!
to the public on certain dates throughout the summer and I would love to go,
just out of curiosity!

Anyway, that’s it from me for today. Have a very good day and join me tonight
on BBC1 at 6.30pm. Look out for your Levy Letter again tomorrow.

Take care

Peter
