Hello, its Peter here and welcome to Wednesdays Levy Letter. I hope your day is going well and I hope youll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm. Ill have all the days news and Paul will have the forecast.
Tonight on the programme, Ill have the very latest on the search for the missing mother, Alison Davies. Alison is believed to have jumped from the Humber Bridge with her son, Ryan, whose body was found on Sunday. Ill be speaking to the divers, who are directly involved in this search. Ill also have the details of the latest twist in the tale of the NHS dentists in Lincolnshire. I know this is a story that is affecting a great many of us in this region, so I hope you can join me tonight for this. My guest is Yorkshires top celebrity chef, Brian Turner. Hes in the region ahead of a major Food Festival at Bishop Burton College. And tune in tonight, if youd like the chance to win tickets to see Liberty X perform at Lincoln Live, the huge music concert happening in Lincoln in May. Watch tonight to find out how to enter our competition. Emails Thanks for all the emails on a variety of subjects. Just to tie in a couple of things from yesterday I was talking about the BBC not using Friar Tuck in the new Robin Hood programme because of the worry of upsetting overweight people. As I say, I didnt get this story from the BBC, but I read it in the paper, but its started a flurry of emails. This one is from Paul Are you serious about this? We dont want to laugh at the expense of fat people? Come on. Get real. What about Open All Hours with Ronnie Barker? Hes not the slimmest person on that show and nor is Nurse Gladys. Well, how about Johnny Vegas, Arthur Mallard (and Im going back there a bit now) Peter Kay, Ricky Gervais, to name just a few. Surely, theyre all a bit on the chubby side, but it doesnt stop us laughing at them or indeed with them. So there you go. I knew that one would start us off. And also, I was talking about trampolines and the one thing that cause disputes between neighbours. It used to be Leylandii hedges and now its trampolines. Theres a note here from Dick from North Somercoates. He says, I wish you hadnt mentioned trampolines. Ive been trying to forget about them. Our neighbours bought a huge one for their children, but ignored the instructions about securing it to the ground. During a winter gale, it took off, flew over my shed and somersaulted into my nearly new heated 30ft greenhouse! So Dick, thank you for that. And he says, On a different theme, why does the BBC have to ruin the dramatic impact of the new series of Doctor Who by revealing so much in the recent trails. You see what happens and who turns into what and there seems little point in watching. Do other readers of the Levy Letter feel the same? Well, do you feel the same that too much is being given away in the trails for new programmes and especially for Doctor Who? Political Correctness As you know, its something that weve touched upon a few times in the Levy Letter just recently. The latest story, Ive been reading about in the paper, is about a health and safety killjoy. A grandfather was ordered off a bus for carrying a tin of paint. Bryan Heal boarded the number nine bus and was told by the driver that, he couldnt come on here with that as its against regulations. The driver checked with the head office and explained to Mr Heal that tins of paint are banned from buses under new national health and safety rules. Passengers are also banned from carrying guns, swords, gas cylinders, panes of glass, open bladed tools, paraffin and petrol. Those seem fair enough dont they? But paint from a DIY shop? The driver then ordered the pensioner to get off, leaving him stranded in the rain and clutching his tin of water-based antique cream emulsion! You couldnt make it up could you? Nor could you about this story of Wellington College - Wellington College is one of the leading public schools and gives pupils compulsory lessons in how to be happy. Its introducing weekly classes for youngsters aged between fourteen and sixteen to help them become fulfilled human beings and to be happy! Im sure theres many people reading the Levy Letter, like me and Im beginning to sound like a grumpy old man, who managed to get through school without having to have lessons on how to be happy! Anyway, its going on at the moment at one posh school in this country right now. Single Parent Well, once again, the league tables are keeping us in business. Last night, we were talking about the fact that Hull is the second worst town in the UK for being burgled. And of course it also has the obesity capital tag as well. We were talking about the new big seats in Hulls City Hall, which are now an extra two inches wider compared with the old seats. Well, now it seems that generous benefits for lone parents have made Britain the single parent capital of Europe, according to research. There are more single Mums here than anywhere else. We top the list. Ireland, Holland, Germany and Austria are next on the list, who have the highest number of single parent families and pays them almost the highest levels of state handouts. Research has found that the two factors were linked so that for every £690 increase in payment, then it makes it 3.5% more likely a woman will become a lone mother. Thats quite interesting in itself isnt it? And thats according to figures in the p! aper just out. Well, that's it from me for today. Dont forget to drop me a line about anything weve talked about in the Levy Letter.
