Good morning, it’s Peter here and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope
your day is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at
6.30pm. Lisa Gallagher will have the weather forecast. The rumours are that
it’s getting better for the Easter weekend and it certainly looks like that
might be true looking at the glorious weather this morning. Of course that’s
good news this week. And this week is a nice short week too. I hope you’ve got
some lovely plans for Easter.

Well, it’s no longer parent and toddler groups anymore. There’s a new scheme in
Hull to develop grandparent and toddler groups! I’ll have more on that later on
Look North.

I also want to hear your views tonight on the proposed police mergers. I’ll be
launching a text vote tonight on the programme, so make sure you tune in so
that you can register your vote. On the day that council leaders sign a letter
addressed to the government asking for a full consultation on this matter, I’ll
be asking whether you feel that this merger will improve policing in your area.
I want your views on this one. Council leaders feel that the decision on this
has been taken out of theirs and the public’s hands, so get in touch with your
views.

My guest tonight is the charming Hayley Westenra. She’s got an incredible voice
and is coming to Sheffield for a concert. Staying with music, I’ll be launching
a great competition for a huge concert in Lincoln in May. Headlining will be
Westlife, with Liberty X, Lee Ryan and X Factor finalists, Journey South also
performing. It’ll be a great concert in the summer, so tune in tonight to find
out how you can win two pairs of tickets for this. A very busy show, so I hope
you can join me.

DIY

I see that the under-thirties are unable to do DIY. They’re ok with flat pack
and they can set their videos, but they can’t tackle simple DIY jobs like
wallpapering. One in four struggle to sew a hem on a skirt or wire a plug. The
other job that they can’t do is bleed a radiator. That’s the problems for
younger ones, but of course they have no problem operating their computer or
setting their VCR. The older generation struggle with those tasks. The results,
out today, show that we spend nearly £2000 a year getting someone in to do the
simplest of tasks around the house and garden!

Emails

Don’t forget if you want to drop me a line on any subject, then it’s [EMAIL
PROTECTED] I’ve received emails on a variety of subjects so far this week. I
was talking about the size of hand luggage yesterday. This one has come in from
Tony. He says, “Regarding the airlines cutting down on the size of hand
luggage, then I’m all for it. What annoys me is the weight limit on luggage.
Most airlines allow twenty kilograms of weighed in luggage, whilst others allow
fifty kilograms. I’m six foot two inches tall and weigh nineteen and a half
stone. Obviously my clothes weigh a lot heavier than a twelve stone person.”
You never really think about that do you? “But if we were both to take the same
items on holiday, then I would have to pay excess baggage weight.” That’s
interesting isn’t it? Something I’ve never thought about. Thank you Tony for
bringing that one up.

There’s one here from John Musgrave. “I’m writing to see if you could give me a
quick mention about a fundraising night we’ve got for a little girl called
Nadine Conroy. She’s two years old and is suffering from several disabilities,
which includes fluid on part of her brain. She’s had to have an operation to
fit a tube into her tummy, so that she can be fed. She weights just over
eighteen pounds and cannot walk or talk and is in stark contrast if you see her
twin sister, who’s a typical two year old. Even though Nadine has these
disabilities, she always has a smile on her face. The doctors do not know what
she’s suffering from and have said that it could be a number of years before
they can diagnose what exactly Nadine has got. Well, we’ve organised a
fundraising event at the Southcoates Club on the Newbridge Road in Hull on
Thursday 13th April where some of Hull’s finest acts, including Becky Brown,
Mike King, Brian Hill, Paul Alan and myself, Jonny M, will be performing. !
We’ve got a signed football by Manchester United and George Best and also Hull
FC and Hull KR shirts and also a guest appearance by Hull FC’s Kirk Yeaman and
also Hull KR’s Paul Barker.” So there you are. A very good cause. If you can
get along, then it’s the Southcoates Club on Newbridge Road in Hull on Thursday
13th April. So if you can support that one, then it’s for a very good cause.

And don’t forget, if you’re involved in a charity and you’ve got an event
coming up that you’d like a mention for in the Levy Letter, then drop me a line.

Pens

Don’t forget if you haven’t got your Peter Levy, Levy Letter pen and you’d like
one, then get in touch. Just send me a stamped addressed envelope, post it off
to BBC Look North, Queen's Court, Queen's Gardens, Hull, HU1 3RH. Just send me
a stamped addressed envelope and I’ll send you a pen back by return of post.

Women’s Bodies

If you want to know what’s on a woman’s mind, then take a look at her body.
She’s worrying about its shape and size every fifteen minutes, according to a
new survey. Podgy thighs, muffin top waists and chunky arms are just a few of
her concerns. In fact only one in fifty women are truly happy with her body,
according to the survey that has just been published. Those questioned said
they wanted to lose an average of nineteen pounds, with most suggesting that
nine stone two was their ideal weight. The women, who worried about their
bodies every fifteen minutes or so, were the lucky ones. 29% said they worried
every waking minute. Can you believe that? That’s so frightening isn’t it? The
top ten British female bodies? Well, Kelly Brooke, Kate Moss, Catherine
Zeta-Jones are at the top of the list. I think that’s a little bit far fetched
if you don’t mind me saying so. Anyway, that’s in a survey that’s published
today.

Sleep

As you know, this is something that’s close to my heart – sleep, or the lack of
it in my case. I’ve been trying just about everything to help me sleep. Thanks
to everyone, who have written in to suggest a banana before bed. I’m pursuing
that at the moment. However, there’s an interesting article out today that’s
called, “How Much Sleep Do You Need?” It says that how little sleep we get is
becoming a national obsession. Britain’s leading expert on the subject said
that like our Victorian ancestors, we could get by on half as much as we
actually get at the moment. It seems that Britons spend an average of seven
hours twenty-nine minutes asleep each night apparently, but we could get by,
quite adequately, on four hours sleep a night. This is according to figures
just out. Again, your views on sleep are gratefully received.

Leave It To Levy

Don’t forget, if you’ve got a problem or there’s something that you think we
could tackle on your behalf on the programme, then send me the details. Also
send me a contact telephone number as well so that I can give you a ring about
it and let me know. Either post it to me to the address I gave you for the Levy
Letter pens or just email me!

Well, that's it from me for today. Have a very good day and thanks for reading.
Join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Take care,

Peter
