[all-audio] GoldWave Tutorials
I have uploaded an ASCII text of a tutorial, by John "Wilson, to sendspace.com. I have three others that are audio files and too large to put on the sendspace free. Anyone who can direct me where and how, I can share them with you. They were offerred on the internet at no cost by their creators; and I am assuming they can freely be shared. Howard Traxler mailto:htraxl...@gmail.com To get the one text file that is on sendspace, go to https://www.sendspace.com/file/s6y605 It's the John Wilson creation. Hello. The two programmes are not exactly equivalents. Reaper is much more difficult to use, but it's also a more versatile programme that is a fully fledged multi-track recorder, editor, and you can even use it to drive soft synths and do midi. So it al depends on what it is you want to do. Reaper is more demanding and pretty much assumes you have good audio hardware right out of the box. It works with aseo (sp) and Goldwave doesn't, but that also means, if you use a screen-reader, it's bestif it is on its own audio output in windows. Goldwave is a great programme that can do all sorts of audio processing -- one track at a time. It's not really made for music production. But it can still use vst effect plugins. I have used it for ages. Unfortunately I have had some trouble with the latest versions, first with a keyboard command glitch (I consider it a problem because even though there's a solution it's not really documented anywhere I can see), and dictation mode, which I use a fair bit, not working. Still, you can get an older version if you want. As for usability with a screen-reader, they both are, but you will certainly have to take some time to study up, read documentation and so on. It'll be more of a long haul with reaper for sure, so if you are just starting out and not going to work with music production or midi stuff, I would think goldwave would be an excellent tool. There's also audacity of course, which is kind of somewhere in between Goldwave and Reaper in terms of its' abilities. It has a weird interface that I think isn't much like most daw software, but that could actually be an advantage if you can't see the screen and haven't used any other ones. -Original Message- From: all-audio@groups.io On Behalf Of David Mehler Sent: April 5, 2024 5:20 PM To: all-audio@groups.io Subject: [all-audio] Goldwave or Reaper Accessibility, and beginner friendliness as a DAW? Hello, I forgot, there was a set of free courses for GoldWave and Reaper by CAVI, very much out of date now but I mention them because getting started with audio is not seeking a DAW. The lectures for both DAWS were the same to start with. These lectures were on subjects such as; What is sound and how is it generated? How does a microphone work and what are the different types of microphone? What kinds of cables are required for audio production? What is an interface and which one do I need to get started? These are basic principles that are very important and I'd suggest an essential for getting into audio as it will save lots of head scratching and unnecessary waisted purchases. I just tried using my browser book mark and it appears that the domain has been pulled. Which is sad as the SD card that I had them stored died a few years ago. Tom, before you make any big changes is a good time to make copies of all your important stuff on a drive that can be disconnected from the computer and store it away in the interim. However, the workaround I think he is talking about involves activating the jaws cursor, then going to virtual cursor mode, or possibly routing jaws to PC, in order to fix the problem that both edge and chrome share. Sorry, I can't really walk you through system restore at the moment, but can come back later. In the meantime, you can type "system restore" into the search box in windows, and see if you have any recent restore points. If it's recent enough for your liking, you can revert to it, and get your old version back. You will also lose anything you installed or modified in settings after the restore point was made. If you haven't manually turned on system restore, the most recent restore point might be from some time ago. I believe large windows updates still automatically generate them, but automatic system restore is off in Windows now for some reason. - -Original Message- From: all-audio@groups.io On Behalf Of Tom Kaufman Sent: June 8, 2023 1:28 PM To: all-audio@groups.io Subject: Re: [all-audio] Major Problem With Tapin Radio: Can Anyone Help? Re: [all-audio] Goldwave and Issues with Start Marker, I think!
My new GoldWave installed in the "program files" folder; but the older one (5.68) remains in the program files (x86) folder; and that's the one that runs from the desktop shortcut. Looks like I'll have to remove the old one and point the shortcut to the new one. In addition, I'll have to put in my registration codes. Then comes the big problem: choosing and setting up a recording device. I'll be back. Is this "Shift +E" command part of GoldWave or part of an NVDA addon or JAWS script? I didn't know it exists. I use NVDA. [all-audio] How to make my Winamp play?
Good morning all, Using Windows 11 with NVDA and Winamp 5.9. In file explorer, I enter on an mp3 file and winamp comes up but it doesn't play. I usually use Winamp. or GoldWave. I also have foobar, VLC, audacity, and, of course, Groove and WMP; but I don't know those vary well. I guess I'll try loading a couple into GoldWave first and see if it plays. If not, then I'll try the others. Appreciate your thoughts. Howard On 5/26/2022 11:01 AM, Anders Holmberg wrote: Hi! Re: [all-audio] DM-720 Question
The little end of the cord goes into the female plug in the center of the very bottom of the olympus, I'm guessing. It only goes in one way; don't force it. Yes, in fact, I have a friend who can probably do those kinds of fixes. As soon as we are more comfortable about going out places again, I'll take it to him and see if he'll take a look. Re: [all-audio] Olympus DM-720 impressions?
Tom, have you ever had or had reason to know about the 520? I'm wondering how much like the 520 is the 720? I.E., the input jack is shared between mic and line and is located at the business end between the microphones; the audio output jack is 3.5MM and located on the side; the remote control jack is 2.5MM and also on the side; the USB port is also the charging connector and is on the end away from the mics; the power and key lock is a slider on the side near the record, stop and play buttons. This describes the 520. . Re: [all-audio] olympus recorders
Thank you Hamit, for your thoughts. Talking with the Olympus distributor, I got the impression that the 720 was just like the 520. Any time I used the 520 for music, I either transferred the files to my computer or just connected the 520 directly to my stereo. To my old ears, it sounded as good as I could want. But hay DVD is better then your usual Olympus stuff. The 720 like the P-4 takes 1 triple A and is small. The sound of the 720 and the LS-p4 is too mini me for my liking. [all-audio] Portable Audio Converter
Hello Listers, Has anyone here purchased what they call a "Portable Audio Converter"? It's a little square box that will accept audio (two-channel stereo) from a line level source and digitize it directly to a thumb drive or SD card. It's price is in the $40 range. I bought one of these and started using it to digitize my records and cassettes. I started using 16 gig thumb drives. It would start recording andsometimes stop before the program material ended. I returned it to the dealer who tested it out and determined that I should just not use 16 gig cards. They returned it to me and I've now been using it on an 8 gig card and it seems to work fine. Wonder what it would do with cards or thumb drives larger than 16 gig? I'm wondering about anyone else's experience with this device. It's not blind-friendly, but I like it anyway. Re: [all-audio] Little Sub-Woofers
Seems you could be right: smaller cones to make further excursion could produce greater sound pressure and low frequencies. I have not taken one of these apart so don't know about construction. Wonder it they are ported or non-ported. Wonder if one can purchase speakers of this type to build home made speaker systems. I still like my 15 inch woofers in large cabinets best; and using high-powered amplifier. Howard On 6/30/2019 12:37 PM, Steve Jacobson wrote: Howard, There are a couple of ways that companies are getting more out of small subwoofers. Probably the biggest thing is that they can partly make up for the lack of efficiency of smaller cones and cabinets by electronically equalizing the signal and by including higher power internal power amplification. Also, sometimes speaker cones are used that can move further than they used to. This means they can be driven harder. Some of the smaller subwoofers really do an amazing job. I have heard a couple, though, that do well at deep base but sometimes tend to "double", where low bass notes have their harmonics produced more than on the larger subwoofers. Therefore, one needs to listen carefully to be sure you are getting what you want. Re: [all-audio] Speakers
Thank you Dane for your explanation. I think it's what I was looking for. I think I'll stick to my old "pair of speakers" type of system. Howard On 2/28/2019 9:41 AM, Dane Trethowan wrote: The one good thing about all the Amazon speakers now is that they have line-out so you can use them with some other powered speakers, stereo Amplifier etc. The newer generation of Amazon Echo speakers have something called Dolby 360 and I tend to think this is a marketing therm rather than actually meaning that the speaker is stereo. It seems that - if you’re talking Smack Speakers - then you’re better to stick to the Smart Speaker brands themselves such as Amazon and Google. I have a Google Home Mac smart speaker here which is supposed to be the best sounding speaker in the Google range and its not bad but it is not portable and certainly wouldn’t fit the requirements of the original author of this thread. What I really like about the Google Home Max is its auto room tuning function. In many cases multi room speakers system are back to where it all started - feeding both stereo channels into one speaker - so in order to get stereo you need “A Pair”. There are multi room speakers that come as a stereo speaker such as the Denon Heos 7 and Heos 5 speakers. The Denon Heos 3 and Heos 1 are speakers speakers which you can pair together and that actually has advantages. You might just want to use one Denon Heos 3 speaker as a centre speaker for example. Getting back to the Google Home Max speaker I mentioned earlier. I’m considering getting another to make a pair. When the Mac lays horizontally its a stereo speaker though separation isn’t all that good. When the Max stands vertically it is a mono speaker and can be part of a pair if there are 2 Max speakers. You can do similar things with amazon echo speakers. Thanks Brian, it seems then, that when someone is selling a bluetooth speaker, you don't really know what's in it, huh? Howard On 2/28/2019 8:32 AM, Brian Olesen wrote: Yo Howard, Some speakers are those so called bars, where there are 2 or more speaker units in each bar. Thank you Colin, That was certainly the problem. I read something about scroll lock in the manual; but that's a key I never touched in 32 years of playing with computers. [all-audio] I think I broke my GoldWave
Hi all, I was looking at some of the recording setttings in my latest goldWave (under win10 64 and NVDA) and I must have made some undesirable changes. I'm now hearing (in the playback of an existing file) very loud white noise and sped up audio of the file. I'd just like to set GoldWave back to its default settings. Can't seem to find it in the manual or in the menus. Any thoughts, please? Thanks. Howard -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group. Re: [all-audio] CC EP Pro Radio continued
Dane, you are generalizing. Some ham radio guys know the stuff and some don't. Whichever I am is no concern to anyone but me. All I am saying is: (only an opinion); broadcast radio and TV, these days, is nothing but a vast waste land and not worth the price of any type of receiving device. - Original Message - From: "Dane Trethowan" To: Sent: Wednesday, October 10, 2018 10:15 PM Subject: Re: [all-audio] CC EP Pro Radio continued I think you're missing the point. This radio is a very reasonably priced and good sounding set so no matter what your radio listening habits - long distance or local - then it’s a set worth getting. And please forgive me again but those who use Ham radio sets I've found wouldn't know a a good sensitive long distance receiver if they fell over one. Yep I know that Kenwood are recognised for transceivers as are Uniden and a whole heap of other companies but they're not known for long distance reception of the type I'm talking about, you need nice antennas to be strung up, nothing wrong with that at all but I like to move around. -Original Message- From: all-audio@groups.io On Behalf Of Howard Traxler Sent: Thursday, 11 October 2018 2:10 PM To: all-audio@groups.io Subject: Re: [all-audio] CC EP Pro Radio continued Don't know what kind of broadcasting is done in Australia, but here in the states there isn't much that I'd turn on the radio for--no matter how good the radio be. Being a radeo ham, I have a Kenwood TS-590S. The receiver on this one tunes continuous from the "long wave" bandup through 54 (or so) megahertz; very nicely covering the US broadcast band. With external amplification, this one can have pretty good sound. Not to take anything away from the CC radios or even the super radios; there has to be something out there that one desires to hear; or what good is it? - Original Message - From: "Dane Trethowan" To: Sent: Wednesday, October 10, 2018 1:11 PM Subject: Re: [all-audio] CC EP Pro Radio continued Shame you feel that way as there’s plenty to recommend a radio such as this if you’re thinking from a content perspective. Actually one could argue that its probably better to be able to listen to long-distance radio given the rubbish some local city stations broadcast and then you’ll never know unless you try receiving these stations so therefore you’ll need something good to receive them on in the first place. So enter the CC EP Pro as a very good starting point for a most reasonable price. There aren’t too many radios that come near the CC EP Pro as far as performance these days and I’ve had my view confirmed when scanning about the band and listening to the set earlier this morning. Yes, you can go for all those vintage sets if you like as I myself have done but its really not worth the bother doing that unless you know someone in the repairs business. Let’s take the classic GE Super Radio version II, I got one in 1990 and I gave it away. Now suppose I was offered one of those sets today the question then arises, should I buy or should I settle for something else like a CC EP Pro? To me the answer is obvious, forget about the GE Super Radio and take the CC EP Pro. The GE Super Radio would most likely require an alignment and finding someone to do that may take some time. The CC EP Pro is as good as - if not a little better in some ways - as the GE Super radio was. The CC EP Pro is far quieter whereas the GE Super Radio was quite noisy in comparison. The CC EP Pro in my view has a definite performance edge when it comes to receiving those distant stations not only for the lack of noise but because of its pinpoint accurate DSP tuning, the CC EP Pro is about as selective a radio you’ll find anywhere. The GE Super radio may sound a little better but the amp isn’t much good and you’re not going to get much volume out of it. The CC EP Pro lacks a little bottom but does have a smaller speaker. So yes, whatever your listening habits - local or distant, AM or FM - then the CC EP Pro is certainly worth the look, I can’t remember the exact price of the radio now - I obviously pad to pay quite a bit more to have the unit shipped to Australia -, the price is well under a hundred US dollars. I had the pleasure of receiving my CC EP Pro AM/FM radio around half an hour ago so I’ve been able to do some quick testing of this unit. Firstly for the price its an absolute bargain if you’re wanting a modern-day “Super Radio” but the radio isn’t without some annoyances. The first is with the sound, not much bottom but enough I guess, certainly a lot of very nice crisp top. You have to be extremely careful how you tune this radio, you can’t go racing up and down the dial as you can with a standard analogue type radio. The CC EP. is in fact a radio with an Analogue dial but tunes in steps of 9 or 10KHZ selectable and you can hear the radio step as you tune slowly up or down the band. If you tune too fast then you’ll miss hearing those weak signals and may actually hear nothing at all if you tune at speed. So that out of the way the other thing to remember is that you may not hear a correct representation of the received signal when you first tune there, this radio has some traits of that annoying Soft muting so wait a second of two before passing judgement. The next thing the user has to bare in mind is that the CC EP Pro - like the former CC EP - has a tuneable ferrite twin coil antenna. Norma

The next thing the user has to bare in mind is that the CC EP Pro - like the former CC EP - has a tuneable ferrite twin coil antenna. Normally leaving the tuning knob at its middle detent should give you reasonable reception anywhere on the AM band but I have found that if you’re prepared to tune about with this knob you can improve the reception significantly, something you quickly get used to. The next thing to note is that this radio is extremely directional, is that good or bad? Well if you’re wanting to say nun out very weak stations next to very strong one’s then the directionality of this portable is a pure God Send and can make quite a dramatic difference. What it also means is that you may have to move the radio around a little bit to get optimal reception of your tuned station. All that aside then the radio is still a pure joy to use, simple but yet very affective at the job it was designed for, to enable the user to enjoy both local and long distance AM/FM broadcast with a reasonable quality sound not found on a lot of today’s radios. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group. Re: [all-audio] HDMI to RCA
When we bought a wide screen TV, back in 2015, the dealer made up a connecting cable that goes from an HDMI port on the TV (has two RCA males) to the input of my old-fashioned analog stereo amp. Don't know what they charged us, but it works fine. - Original Message - From: "Dane Trethowan" To: Sent: Sunday, July 29, 2018 1:03 AM Subject: [all-audio] HDMI to RCA Hi! A month or so ago one of our members posted an eMail looking for a device that would convert HDMI to RCA. I decided to do some research to see if such a device was available as it would seem perfectly logical for such a device to be in existence somewhere even though the among of RCA connections might be rather large given that the latest version of HDMI can handle more than 13 channels of audio along with Goodness knows what else in the video department. Alas I ssaw absolutely nothing that would convert HDMI to RCA whether that be dedicated audio, Video, or even just 2 channel HDMI. So I went to speak to an audio engineer friend of mine to see if such a device was even possible to manufacture. I'm told that - whilst such a device could easily be built - it would cost far too much to do so. Apparently all manufacturers of equipment who use the HDMI system have to pay a license fee of around $150 per unit where HDMI is used so there goes any chance of buying a HDMI to RCA converter. Shame really as I don't doubt the usefulness of such a device so - in the case of the Apple TV or any other device that has only a HDMI interface - your only options are to either feed the Apple TV directly into a modern TV which has HDMI inputs or into a modern Surround-Sound receiver which also has HDMI inputs and can integrate thus with a modern TV. HDMI inputs are not commonly found on stereo Hi-Fi equipment such as dedicated amplifiers and the like given that these devices handle audio only and not video.
