 Now read on..

This year, just like the last few years I had planned to release a one hour
mix set of Rahman's finest. For those of you who are unaware, I release a
special non-stop Rahman's edit mix for each deevali . These are mixed
versions AR Rahman's finest tracks in the year. Lot of people out there
have downloaded them and played during their parities and events in wake of
 the festival and related reunions.

Just like last year, this year too many of you have sent me emails asking
if I was working on a mix set for Deevali. Yes I am and I present a preview
 of the mix here!

I am putting together two mix sets of Rahman's finest, one set for Hindi
tracks and the other one for Tamil tracks.. Both of them are the non-stop
mix edits with playback time of about 45 mins. Initially I had planned to
release the Hindi mix set without waiting for the audio release of Rahman's
latest – Yuvraaj. However, I instantly changed my mind when I heard the
tracks. They are mind-blowing and deserve a mention in the mix set.

I think the music of Rahman for the film Yuvraaj music is extremely fresh
and superbly produced. Very rich and appealing. Needless to say, being an
ardent fan of Rahman i will have a positive bias!

Anyways, i thought it would be nice if I present a portion of my
Wiredbeats – Rahman Festival Edit Mix 2008 which has a medley of the few
tracks from Yuvraaj so you may pre-judge the presentation and may be give me
few ideas and tracks that you want me to mix. I think that would be cool.

To say that an album shouldn't be criticized just because it is by Rahman
does not pass muster. There were couple of crude remarks as well which are
unwarranted.

The album stands tall on its own merits.

To hear a piece of music, for example, involves the primary auditory

Hi all,

Came across this review and the fun part is the comments. u'll enjoy it.
 http://harryjerry. com/music/ review-yuvvraaj- soundtrack/

 in between my thoughts :

Yuvraaj is in altogether different league and cannot compare it with Taal.
Frankly first hearing was OK. Now can't get enough of it. Yesterday the song
was played continuously on my player the whole day.Still have urge to
 listen.

Those who started writing the review after the first hearing..i hope they
had their lips sealed now. Who can give such a diverse music. First the
Historical in Jodha Akbar and jump straight to complete Gen X album
JTYJN and now symphony orchestration loaded Yuvraaj. Looking forward
to a knockout Ghajini What more one want. .. Obviously more song or better
 say gems from ARR.

 ARR Rules.. Always.

  1) Once Yuvvraaj comes to an end, one wonders that which of the songs
from the album would turn into a chartbuster.

 My take:

Shano is going to be most popular.
Mastam is going to be the runner up.

 in terms of chart toppings.

2)Dil kas rishta, manmohini and tu muskura are the top 3 numbers no
doubt. One similarity I could notice is the use of ALAAP in all 3,
Whenever he uses them, its almost a gauranteed hit. Good track tu
muskura becomes excellent bcoz of javed ali's alaap.

yeah, these songs are great and soothin.

But, a hip hop dance song would always become more popular than soothing
 songs.

3)I have an excellent audio system, somehow the other numbers are just
petrol on top of water, doesn't sink in.

 Sundar can't listen, saala.
 :-)

4)Not all rahman tracks grows on you.

We all say that before the tracks grow on us. :-)

5)Picturisation may save some tracks, which cannot be said at this time.

Picturization had helped many an albums in the past and turned the chart
 toppings.

In 80s, Madhuri Dixit/ Anil Kapoor's film Beta (Anand Millind)'s Koyal
Si Teri Boli was ruling the charts but when the movie got released, the
sensuous picturization of Dhak Dhak Karne Laga moved to the top and
 removed Koyal.

In 90s, Madhuri Dixit/ Sanjay Kapoor's film Raja (Nadeem Shravan)'s
Nazrein Mili Dil Dhadka was a hit but when the movie got released, the
naughty, mischievous picturization of Ankhiyaan Milaaoon Kabhi moved to
the top and removed Love you raja.

Of course, picturization can help and anything can happen.

 But, there is a catch.

Ghai is still holding his musical sensitivities, but his directorial
capabilities have taken a down slide. His films are not doing well, and
he has lost the grip on public's pulse. His latest many movies are
 outright shabbiliy made.

Even taal was badly made movie. Other than Anil Kapoor's new type of
practical, pragramtic, wordly-wise characterization, there was nothing
new in Taal that one can notice and remember (of course, Aish's beauty
and ARR's music were there). The scene where Akshay's dad insults Aish
and her father and the way Akshay reacts was outright sickening.

Pardes's climax of Mahima running away, and then showing the guy's love
bites to the elders was sickening.

Yaadein's climax of that shareholders' meeting showing cards to jury the
fate of love of the duo was unrealistic.

So, I am not expecting much, visually, from Subhash Ghai this time also.

In any case, this album has its own perfect foundation and it would
bring viewers to the theatres, exactly what happened in Taal, even the
 movie is badly done.

6)Ghai rightly quoted Taal - Best Musical Ever from rahman. He
  knows, rahman knows...

A statement is valid at the time it is made. That EVER meant SO FAR. It
has been 9 years. They are duly entitled to revise their statement or
 surpass it.

  Cheers
  Sundar (melbourne).

 Thanks

Rahman's music can be categorized under 5 broad categories:

 2) Indian Classical/semi classical/raaga based
 3) Western classical/symphony
 4) Folk/Indian regional/world reigional
 5) Hip hop/techno/electronica/jazz (western pop)

In yuvvraaj, he has combined numbers 2, 3, and 5 in the most unique
way more than any other MD has done in the past. This is what
makes
the Yuvvraaj album so special. Many have combined 1 and 2 well, 2
and
3, 4 and 5. But, rarely has anyone combined 5 with any other
number
other than 4 or at most 3, and that too in rudimentary ways.

Rahman has used these styles in different combinations in different
 albums:

Jodha Akbar is largely 1 and 2 with small 3
Jaane Tu is largely 5 with some 3 and small 2
Ada is mostly 2, some 3, some 5, some 4

There is almost always a 2 and 3 in each of Rahman's albums these
days
with heavy emphasis on 4 and 5 in his Tamil soundtracks of late. I
miss the 1s and 2s in his Tamil works!

 Which combination is your favorite?

 My favorite is 1,2,3!

I love this track. It's hypnotic and makes you groove. Love the

classical singing. One problem: it's too short! Imagine if this song

had gone on longer, added tablas or dholaks to the rhythm track and

fast string riffs to the vocal alaapstotal of 5-6 minutes. I just

feel frustrated when this song ends because I want more of it and

fantasize additional instruments being added one by one.

Oh well, I'm happy with the track anyway. It's one of my favorites of

Yuvvraaj.

couldnt see ARR posters lying down on the road...:)
and tickets were really costly .. 10k for a ticket in front rowtoo much :(
and when it started raining, management did nothing but it was ARR who kept his
promise and still performed on dat night.Great memories

Yuvvraaj - Colossal score by Rahman

IndiaGlitz  [Monday, October 20, 2008]

Yippee! For those who yearned to heed over spellbinding musical scores, here
comes A.R. Rahman's phenomenal gifts of composition, literary and playing skill
surmounting to the extremum. The sensational duo combo Subash Ghai-Rahman
electrified with their scintillating piece with 'Taal' and of course 'Yuvvraaj'
offers chest-full-of delights. Perhaps, before owning a copy of this album,
make sure it is not for those of you who want Rahman's full-toned sweet
melodies, but those who desire to listen to the driving energies of Mozart,
Yehudi Menuhin, Beethoven and indeed contemporary musician Rahman blended
together. If you're gonna question, Are the tunes so entrancing? Obviously,
it isn't a clichéd piece of work of turning Gulzar's lyrical lines into tunes.
Singers have displayed their emotions and it's stupendously balanced by sharp
clarity of instrumental texture. You're sure to lose yourselves out on the
purity and sweetness of realistic music.
Dil Ka Rishta – Enchanting score by Rahman
Singers: Sonu Ningam, Roop Kumar Rathod, A.R.Rahman, Clinton Cerejo, Suzanne
D'Mello, Vivinenne Pocha
The interlude goes on with fortepiano followed by fast flowing orchestral
violins and stringed instruments played together. The elegantly noble Andante
cantabile keeps accompanying throughout 7.39mins of songs turning down the
spotlights and arresting your senses. Never-seen-before vocalisms of singers
who keep sustaining at high level tones and A.R. Rahman rendering his voice in
middle parts are fascinating. Sonu Ningam strides with his uttermost spirits in
churning the best out of him. Roop Kumar Rathod, Clinton Cerejo, Suzanne
D'Mello and Vivienne Pocha add more to the attractive quotients. Moreover, the
song has a mix of symphonic genre blended with contemporary western beats and
of course the carnatic ragas. This should have really evoked your previsions of
how this exquisite melody would sound. Go ahead; get yourselves transfixed with
it ….
Shano Shano – Merely for disco floors
Singers: Sonu Nigam, Srinivas, Kartik, Timmy, Sunaina, Vivienne Pocha, Tina.
Again it's Sonu Ningam taking on lead along with Srinivas, Karthik and Sunaina.
But their exquisite voices get eclipsed by the winkling techno-beats. Well, the
melodious tunes seem to be bit mediocre at certain parts. But Subash Ghai with
his sorcerous abilities in cinematography would have got the best on visuals.
The song would go reiterated over and over straight onto the discotheques.
Shano Shano (Remix) – Sleek and stylish
Ember Rap
Distinctive peppy mix of instrumental synthesizers in hand with brilliantly
engineered work gets the best sound. Jazzy beat with chorally-stringed chords
blended with techno-bass all throughout the rap is sure to turn you zippy.
Preludes are completely played on sync-thick leads and Ember sways tattling
with rap lines are awesome. With refrains of 'Shano Shano' continually
recapitulated by female chorus, makes the entire 2.35mins effectually lavish…
Mastam Mastam – Chilling your senses
Singers: Sonu Ningam, Alka Yagnik, Naresh and Benny
Looks like Sonu Ningam haps to be the ducky lad for Rahman. He fleets rendering
his voice for end-to-end of different genres all throughout the album. Well,
this song sounds to be having been placed in elated situation. So, what makes
the song so special? A perfect orchestration of singers and instruments don't
overshadow voices at any extent… Rhythmic Rumba chords on guitars keeps flowing
through and last minute of the song you've the best combo of strings and
percussions blended…. Probably, you can expect a better dance over there on the
screen.
Manmohini Morey – Mix of classic 'n' western
Singer: Vijay Prakash
Merely, a fusion of Hindustani Ragas rendered by Gulzar and synthesized western
beats by maestro. Vijay Prakash vocalizes more or less similar with the styles
of Ustad Ali Khan and 'Sang-froid' would be the best term to entitle this
number. Surely, you'll feel this to be an already experienced musical and of
course it's alike 'Dheem Ta Dare' from Thakshak (singer: Suja Bhattacharya,
Music: A.R.Rahman).
Tu Hi Meri Dost – Ever-cherishing melody
Singers: Benny Dayal, Shreya Ghosal, A.R. Rahman.
Over-the-top! No other words to ennoble this

http://shreenathani el.blogspot. com/2008/ 10/yuvvraaj- music-review- arrahman-
strikes.html

The music release of the oncoming Subhash Ghai movie - Yuvvraaj , happened
recently. I had reason to be excited- A.R.R scored the movie's songs.

To start off this brief review, a general look at the album first up and you
realise that the film is an out and out musical. Talk about conveying things
through music, Gulzar has done justice to Rahman's tunes by penning apt lyrics
which create a sense of anticipation to the listener about the situation at
hand in the movie when the song is on. Another observation - a lot of
orchestration has been used- and almost all the songs have been seamlessly
blended with one another on the BGM front (maybe for the flashback effect? who
knows - Subhash Ghai and his fantasies !!)

Shano Shano -

A typical party track- gets you into the groove and dancing - I actually went
to the extent of trying out karaoke for this song! Addictive and an instant hit
for sure.

Shano Shano Remix-

A slower version of the same song remixed with some hiphop style lyrics-not as
impressive as the original I would say. Sometimes certain songs are best left
to their original version, or better, remixed by A.R.R. himself and not others.
Hope he is listening:)

Main Hoon Yuvvraaj -

Unsure why they included this in the album, but this brief dialogue style
song-wannabe with Salman Khan on the vocals is ok - passable. Subhash Ghai-ish
again.

Zindagi Zindagi-

Sung mellifluously by Srinivas, here is where the album starts getting a bit
hi-fi. Carnatic based composition which more than impressed me - will turn out
to be one of the best hits of the year.

(has some common notes with Narumugaiye from Iruvar, Manam Virumbudhey Unnai
from a movie's name I forgot, and more noticeably a common note with Luka
Chuppi from Rang De Basanti)

Tu Meri Dost Hai-

This song is where the Yuvvraaj theme music kicks in - ARR has included it in
almost all the songs, and infused life beautifully into it. A different duet,
the music and vocals deliver bigtime- transports you to dreamland. Defines
friendship beautifully with its lyrics, and surprise as A.R.R comes in towards
the end to render a few lines by himself! Sureshot bigtime hit. (Found some
common notes with Aao Na..of kyun ho gaya na)

Dil Ka Rishta-

One of my favourites of this album too - plenty of orchestra, vocals, and a
totally refreshing tune. Never before heard this type of a rendition. Seven and
a half minutes of absolute enjoyment, a peppy song ( supposedly emotional ) and
one which has apt English lyrics to go with good verses in Hindi. A.R.R. does
an Alaap in the end- don't miss out on it!

Mastam Mastam -

Another peppy track , with cues from Corrs' BGM ( and of course that means it
has resemblances to Nenjodu Kalandhidu from Kaadhal Konden) but the similarity
kind of ends there. One song which shoots up your energy levels, with nice
little instrumentals accompanying it. Cute number.

Tu Muskura -

Bigtime hit. No words to describe how wonderfully this song has been sung. I
think A.R.R. must have composed the tune and set the lyrics to it., but anyways
it fits in so wonderfully that there is no way noone could not like it. Hear it
to feel it - all I can say :) No comments :)

Manmohini Morey -

If Sonu Nigam was an everpresent phenomenon in this album who must have
impressed you in all the numbers, here's one person who takes everything away -
Vijay Prakash. A hindustani based composition, which requires a lot of training
for performance on such a high scale- Vijay has pulled it off with ease.
Remember him as the person who sung Poovasam.. from Anbe Sivam - this is by
far the best song in this album but by a slender margin( as far as I gauge this
one impressed me the most). Don't miss the alaap interludes.

Overall, Yuvvraaj gets an 9.0/10 from me and a thumbs up to A.R.R. for having
the guts to venturing on such territory and actually managing to pull it off.

Yuvvraaj - I'm hooked to it !

2008-10-21 Thread jamshid TC
May be you are true..But i really enjoyed reading most of it because i
think the reviewers  should think twice before they review a rahman release on
the first listen on the release day.( its high time they respect this man and
what he has given to indian music)

I am working in KSA in a remote area and doesn't get much time to watch TV to
catch up with the latest music . So i go by reading the reviews.( in india by
some means you will get to listen to most of the new songs and can pick your
own good ones) .

So , I feel , baseless reviews ( I didn't see even a single person supporting
his views in the thread) deserves its share from the mass so that next time he
will be more carefull and responsible :-) ..i am sure , in hindsight Joginder
will be repenting the hasty review he did for JA.and it was evident in his
review of ADA.

Yea..the tone is really sarcastic...i agree. may be he should not let the
public comment back in the site :-)( because controlling mass is difficult)

I am sorry to say but the comments are a bit juvenile.

To say that an album shouldn't be criticized just because it is by Rahman does
not pass muster. There were couple of crude remarks as well which are
unwarranted.

The album stands tall on its own merits.

Hi all,

Came across this review and the fun part is the comments. u'll enjoy it.

in between my thoughts :

Yuvraaj is in altogether different league and cannot compare it with Taal.
Frankly first hearing was OK. Now can't get enough of it. Yesterday the song
was played continuously on my player the whole day.Still have urge to listen.

Those who started writing the review after the first hearing..i hope they had
their lips sealed now. Who can give such a diverse music. First the Historical
in Jodha Akbar and jump straight to complete Gen X album JTYJN and now
symphony orchestration loaded Yuvraaj. Looking forward to a knockout

[arr] Lyrics First ... Music Second .. or Vice Versa?

2008-10-21 Thread rakesh kumar
Hi all,

There has been an ongoing discussions that yesteryear music directors makes
music according to lyrics given to them and not vice versa that they give a
tune to the lyricist to fill in with words..And nowadays the later is practiced
more..

Listen to the track MASTAM MASTAM mainly , and you can clearly feel the music
is weaved around the lyrics, keeping the lyrics at the core. The lyrics never
stick to the traditional pattern and ARR had done magic with that keeping his
music to flow along with the lyrics. This shows why Rahman is in league with
great music directors India has produced..SD, RD..Shankar - Jaikishan, OP
Nayyar etc..

And i would like to point out an interesting thing.. i hope you all noticed and
feeled.. in the same track.. when the words come kahega zamaana .. oo..
suneega zamaana, you are transferred to the 50's era..for these few seconds..
amazing.. No copying.. nothing.. but pure transformation..

Back to the main topic.. what you guys thing about it..

ARR Rules.. Always.

[arr] Will Slumdog prove to be this year's Little Engine that Could?

2008-10-21 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
This Year's Little Engine That Could
Every year over Labor Day weekend, film fans descend on the small mountain
town of Telluride, Colorado for the Telluride Film Festival, a fest that's
rather like an early Christmas morning for cinephiles. We buy our spendy
passes not knowing what we're going to get in return, but trusting that, for
the most part, fest co-directors Tom Luddy and Gary Meyer will have filled our
festival stockings with sugarplums rather than lumps of coal. And most of the
time, that proves to be the case.
But
no matter what ends up on the official schedule, there's always buzz
and speculation around what this year's sneaks (that is, bigger films
that haven't yet released, which aren't on the offical fest schedule)
are going to be, and often, the sneaks end up garnering a good deal of
the fest buzz. This year, the juiciest sneak by far was Slumdog Millionaire,
Danny Boyle's
film about a young orphan growing up in the slums of Mumbai who goes on
a game show and winds up a millionaire, only to find himself arrested
for fraud because no one believes a slumdog like him could have
possibly won without cheating.
I
went into the screening of Slumdog at the Palm Theater (one of several
temporary theaters in Telluride that, like the fest headquarters called
Brigadoon, appears as if by magic every Labor Day weekend) very
uncertain about what I was going see. I've seen most of Boyle's
better-known films, and therefore had certain expectations going in
about what the tone of the film was likely to be; those expectations
were heightened when Boyle introduced the film by saying, I should
warn you, the opening scene includes some fairly graphic torture, so if
you're squeamish ...
Then
the opening credits rolled, the film began, and by the time Boyle got
to the young hero's first flashback scene of a pack of young street
kids being chased by police through the streets of Mumbai, he had me.
Like pretty much everyone else who saw the film that night at
Telluride, I left the screening with the magical sense I'd had walking
out of the sneak of Juno almost exactly a year
earlier -- that undeniable feeling that I'd just seen something
special, a surprising, honest, heartwarming film with the potential to
be big. Very big.
Working
outside the UK, as a friend of mine observed after we saw the film,
seems to have enhanced the versatile Boyle's directorial strengths,
while allowing him to reach out to a wider audience than his previous
films. With Shallow Grave (my personal favorite of the director's films up to
now) Boyle explored the realm of a dark crime caper; Trainspotting focused on
an urban drug addict; Sunshine delved into sci-fi and the dire need to save the
sun; 28 Days Later brought on the zombie action (good for horror fans, not so
much for a more general audience), and Millions (the closest Boyle's previously
come to making a mainstream-friendly
film) was really a statement about British materialism cloaked in the
vestiges of a family film. But Boyle's films, while generally
critically well-received, haven't resonated well at the box office; 28 Days
Later and The Beach are the only two to have cracked $50 million.
Slumdog Millionaire,
which explores poverty, depravity, and disparity of wealth and class
while still maintaining a positive worldview and sense of hope, is
Boyle's his most broadly accessible film to date, and with it's classic
storytelling structure, it will appeal to a wider audience than many of
Boyle's previous films. It could do very well at the mainstream box
office, especially in the hands of Fox Searchlight, who passed on
financing the film but picked it up later for distrib.
And
of course, if any studio knows how to successfully market a sweet,
surprising film like Slumdog to an Oscar nom -- or better yet, Oscar
gold -- it's Searchlight, who previously did big things with 2006
Sundance acquisition Little Miss Sunshine and last year's mega-hit Juno. When
Searchlight shelled out $10 million for Little Miss Sunshine at Sundance a
couple years ago after a heated bidding war against a
couple of other studios, more than a few film journalists commenced
with much moaning, wailing and gnashing of teeth over the sale,
predicting the studio would never make back its investment on a film
that, they felt, would have minimal mainstream appeal.
They were wrong, of course, as the film ended up grossing over $100 million
world-wide. The film's directors, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris,
proved to have the right instincts too; after struggling for a decade
to get the film made and scrapping an earlier studio deal over a
casting dispute in which the folks with the money wanted an A-list cast
to draw higher international dollars, Faris and Dayton stuck to their
guns, insisting the film should be made with their talented, if
less-than-A-list ensemble cast. Dayton and Faris held out for a private
investor, and made the film they wanted. Their instincts, too, proved
to be

Hi All,
Just thought I would share my one as well.

I never knew my mom even knew who ARR was untill one day.
She was watching television in the afternoon one day and me and my brother were
just
doing something in another room.
Suddenly she called us and said they are showing the muslim guy on the
television.
I asked which muslim guy?
She said the guy about whom you and your brother talk all the times.
Me and my brother were stunned completely.
We ran and it was really ARR.
We asked her, 'What else do you know about his music?'
She said all the songs that you guys keep listening all the day are of same
kind and they
are different than the usual songs on Radio and television.

Me and my brother were in shock that day and completely stunned.
Hail ARR and secret powers of him.

[arr] Slow Songs !!!

2008-10-21 Thread sudesh
When it comes to slow songs, no one can ever come near to ARR
composition .
Everytime i think about the change in music pre and post ROJA
release, I get thrilled. The music has drastically improved !!. ROJA
movie music had made me to listen to all tamil music of ARR , even
though i cannot understand tamil. After release of ROJA, me and one
of my collegemate(he too doesnt understand tamil ) became such a big
fan of ARR that, we used to eagerly wait for the next audio
(casette ) release of ARR and also enquire every week in audio shop
whether any new album of ARR has released.

Since we dont understand tamil, we just glance in audio cassette
cover for any letter A R and also for Panchaten records in. One
more diff was that, only ARR album had list of all musicians, this
helped us to identify whether album belongs to ARR.

[arr] Re: Rediff Review - Yuvvraaj

2008-10-21 Thread Sai Theodore
here is the full article

That A R Rahman is a master composer is no biggie. What is truly commendable
is that he has earned an unblemished reputation of someone whose name alone
sends promises of astounding melody. And so, at the risk of gushing, I'd say
any soundtrack by him is like an event itself, more significant than hugely
popular stars and their purported demigod status.

This year, he took us on a breathtaking tour of royalty and romance with the
majestic *Jodhaa Akbar
[Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=jodhaa%20akbar
] *and followed it with the frolic-filled, foot-tapping trendiness in the
youthful beats of *Jaane
Tu[Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=jaane%20tu
]... Ya Jaane Na*.

   - *Why we should look forward
toYuvvraajhttp://specials.rediff.com/movies/2008/oct/20slid1.htm
   *

Next, he helms Subhash
Ghai's[Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=subhash%20ghai
] lavishly-staged, *Yuvvraaj*, inspired in soul and element from European
and Indian classical as well as Rahman's exclusive library of imagination.
Being a wide-ranging musical, *Yuvvraaj*, starring Salman Khan
[Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=salman%20khan
], Katrina Kaif
[Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=katrina%20kaif
], Zayed Khan
[Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=zayed%20khan
] and Anil Kapoor
[Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=anil%20kapoor
], like Ghai's
*Taal[Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=taal
]*, is every music-aficionado's delight.

Here's why:

Besides the CD layout, there's not much *Yuvvraaj *shares in common with *
Taal*. The latter was deliberately theatrical and consisted folk-tune
flavours. This one is marvelously smooth and meadow-fresh, conjuring lilting
images of Prague and Austria, where it has been extensively filmed. At the
same time, it packs in enough complex emotions of its own.

The soundtrack opens with *Main hoon Yuvvraaj*, wherein Salman Khan spews
hard-to-miss sarcasm, introducing himself as the proverbial 'bad boy'
against the etched-in-every-memory Fifth of Beethoven (performed by The
Chennai String Orchestra). He has a point to prove, a notion to dispel. And
he does it, with spirit, beauty and Benny Dayal (of *Pappu can't dance
saala *fame)'s striking vocals, through Gulzar's
[Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=gulzar
] wistful poetry and Rahman's inventive intricacy of* Tu meri dost hain*.

[image: Katrina Kaif]The lingering rhythm of *Tu meri dost *is swapped for
the zingy, retro, disco-friendly beats of *Shano Shano*. An animated line-up
of singers, right from Sonu Nigam
[Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=sonu%20nigam
], Srinivas to Sunaina, Vivienna Pocha bring the house down in this
club-meets-lounge ditty. Its remix by Krishna Chetan, featuring Ember, is a
dry and darker rap-inclusive interpretation of the racy original.

*Tu muskura* is a lyrical delight sending a wave of goose bumps across the
enamoured listener. Gulzar's vivid wizardry pours its heart out through
verse like, '*Sharir see yeh muskurahatein teri. Badan main sunti hoon main
aahatein teri*.' Needless to say it takes Rahman's exquisite touch to cast
these delicate words into the silhouette of his melodies.

Sonu Nigam lends his characteristic velvetiness to the peppy hues of *Mastam
mastam*, again overflowing with Gulzar's graphic thoughts (*Bheje mein
bhochal hain, pairon mein paatal hain*). Effortlessly free-flowing, *Mastam*'s
USP lies in its being entertaining and silvery, at once.

[image: Anil Kapoor]Misty-eyed poignancy breathes effectively through the
melancholic realisation of *Zindagi*. Rendered with excellent restraint and
stirring sentiment by Srinivas, against Rahman's deft play of woodwinds and
breezy strings, this is easily one of *Yuvvraj*'s best compositions.

Piano, cello and other participants of a grand orchestra and powerful chorus
create a vision of escalating drama of sibling bonding under Rahman's
intense guidance and signature *alaap. Dil ka rishta *is his brand of
symphony, generating a state of big-screen showmanship and mellifluous
festivities.

The vigorously classical notes of Manmohini morey, with a conspicuous stamp
of Rahman's whiz-kid personality, are grippingly and flawlessly translated
by Vijay Prakash.

Ultimately, *Yuvvraaj *is a triumphant score from the maestro. For all its
meticulous arrangement and old-world grandeur, it's essentially deep-rooted
in timeless melody, which seldom disappoints.

So, is might right ?

We also need to understand that the days of one or two newspapers throughout
a city, one TV channel , no internet have gone by. So with the media
channels increasing, the trash that comes with it is also going to increase.
We cannot expect everyone to toe our line.

The last thing we would to happen is tarnish Rahman by our responses.
Because as the largest fan group (I think so) , it is also our duty to
practice what Rahman preaches and practices.

I am sorry to say but the comments are a bit juvenile.

To say that an album shouldn't be criticized just because it is by Rahman
does not pass muster. There were couple of crude remarks as well which are
 unwarranted.

The album stands tall on its own merits.

Just thought I would share my one as well.

I never knew my mom even knew who ARR was untill one day.
She was watching television in the afternoon one day and me and my brother
 were just
 doing something in another room.

Even those who didn't the album in first few hearings, or didn't like

So, is might right ?

We also need to understand that the days of one or two newspapers throughout a
city, one TV channel , no internet have gone by. So with the media channels
increasing, the trash that comes with it is also going to increase. We cannot
expect everyone to toe our line.

The last thing we would to happen is tarnish Rahman by our responses.  Because
as the largest fan group (I think so) , it is also our duty to practice what
Rahman preaches and practices.

I am sorry to say but the comments are a bit juvenile.

To say that an album shouldn't be criticized just because it is by Rahman does
not pass muster. There were couple of crude remarks as well which are
unwarranted.

The album stands tall on its own merits.

gushing, I'd say
any soundtrack by him is like an event itself, more significant
than hugely
popular stars and their purported demigod status.

This year, he took us on a breathtaking tour of royalty and romance
with the
 majestic *Jodhaa Akbar

European
and Indian classical as well as Rahman's exclusive library of
imagination.
Being a wide-ranging musical, *Yuvvraaj*, starring Salman Khan
 [Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=salman%

 [Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=katrina%

 ], like Ghai's *Taal
[Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=taal
 ]*, is every music-aficionado's delight.

 Here's why:

Besides the CD layout, there's not much *Yuvvraaj *shares in common
with *
Taal*. The latter was deliberately theatrical and consisted folk-
tune
flavours. This one is marvelously smooth and meadow-fresh,
conjuring lilting
images of Prague and Austria, where it has been extensively filmed.
At the
same time, it packs in enough complex emotions of its own.

The soundtrack opens with *Main hoon Yuvvraaj*, wherein Salman Khan
spews
hard-to-miss sarcasm, introducing himself as the proverbial 'bad
boy'
against the etched-in-every-memory Fifth of Beethoven (performed by
The
Chennai String Orchestra). He has a point to prove, a notion to
dispel. And
he does it, with spirit, beauty and Benny Dayal (of *Pappu can't
dance
saala *fame)'s striking vocals, through Gulzar's
 [Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=gulzar
] wistful poetry and Rahman's inventive intricacy of* Tu meri dost
hain*.

[image: Katrina Kaif]The lingering rhythm of *Tu meri dost *is
swapped for
the zingy, retro, disco-friendly beats of *Shano Shano*. An
animated line-up
of singers, right from Sonu Nigam
 [Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=sonu%
20nigam
], Srinivas to Sunaina, Vivienna Pocha bring the house down in this
club-meets-lounge ditty. Its remix by Krishna Chetan, featuring
Ember, is a
dry and darker rap-inclusive interpretation of the racy original.

*Tu muskura* is a lyrical delight sending a wave of goose bumps
across the
enamoured listener. Gulzar's vivid wizardry pours its heart out
through
verse like, '*Sharir see yeh muskurahatein teri. Badan main sunti
hoon main
aahatein teri*.' Needless to say it takes Rahman's exquisite touch
to cast
these delicate words into the silhouette of his melodies.

Sonu Nigam lends his characteristic velvetiness to the peppy hues
of *Mastam
mastam*, again overflowing with Gulzar's graphic thoughts (*Bheje
mein
bhochal hain, pairon mein paatal hain*). Effortlessly free-flowing,
*Mastam*'s
USP lies in its being entertaining and silvery, at once.

[image: Anil Kapoor]Misty-eyed poignancy breathes effectively
through the
melancholic realisation of *Zindagi*. Rendered with excellent
restraint and
stirring sentiment by Srinivas, against Rahman's deft play of
woodwinds and
breezy strings, this is easily one of *Yuvvraj*'s best compositions.

Piano, cello and other participants of a grand orchestra and
powerful chorus
create a vision of escalating drama of sibling bonding under
Rahman's
intense guidance and signature *alaap. Dil ka rishta *is his brand
of
symphony, generating a state of big-screen showmanship and
mellifluous
 festivities.

The vigorously classical notes of Manmohini morey, with a
conspicuous stamp
of Rahman's whiz-kid personality, are grippingly and flawlessly
translated
 by Vijay Prakash.

Ultimately, *Yuvvraaj *is a triumphant score from the maestro. For
all its
meticulous arrangement and old-world grandeur, it's essentially
deep-rooted
in timeless melody, which seldom disappoints.

[arr] Appreciation for Rahman's music always demands an open mind

2008-10-21 Thread Chord
...and a broad perspective and appreciation for different genres of
music. Those who pan Rahman's music to me are automatically narrow
minded. ARR and some of his colleagues are challenging the junta to
look beyond typical romantic song ballads of yore. It's a musical
paradigm shift, esp. up North, still in process and is bound to be
met with resistance by the common man at times. Yuvvraaj is a
perfect example of this paradigm shift, where new, nuanced, dynamic
aspects of music are being brought forth in a Hindi industry
typically dominated by lovey dovey surface songs and hard and heavy
beats. I find individual Indians to be very narrow minded at times,
while India as a whole is open to new sounds and influences. Shankar
Ehsaan and Loy are also part of this musical paradigm shift with
albums like Rock On, which demand a different type of ear. But, more
than any other MD, I feel that Rahman's music is the most appreciated
by all ages, from the youth to the elderly.

Rahman's older music is appreciated more because it was new back
then, novel sound, had more emphasis on rhythm and was more instantly
catchy, but less nuanced, and is quite nostalgic from today's
perspective. Judgement of older material is always confounded by
nostalgia. Rahman continues to push the creative envelope,
emboldening a visionary approach to music that should challenge pre-
conceived, stereotyped notions of what is and is not good music. I
appreciate that he is trying to uphold higher standards of music
appreciation amongst music lovers and trying to broaden people's
minds. He has done this from day 1.

[arr] A R Rahman Is the man !

2008-10-21 Thread sreenivas.narayanan

Hi

There have been musicians who have come and rendered music and taken
listeners to a different level. But there has hardly been a musician in
the Indian music scene who has altered the meaning of good pure music
and after a point charted a new trajectory for listeners to grow with
him or his music.

With Yuvraaj Rahman confirms that he is the man !

The music of Yuvraaj is testimony to the fact that Rahman does not
want listeners to stagnate at a particular level.

So let us catch up.

This soundtrack rocks !

Thanks,
Sreenivas

[arr] Re: Rediff Review - Yuvvraaj - followed by idiotic comments

2008-10-21 Thread Jahanzeb Farooq
man you have to accept it. although it is growing on us and we have
started liking more compared to the first time, but the fact remains
that it is not something liked by the masses. only one song Tu meri
dost would be liked by the masses but not the rest. even recent ARR
albums had many songs loved by masses (and critics) e.g., Tere bina,
Mayya mayya, Barso re (Guru), Pappu, Aditi, Kahin to (JTYJN) etc etc.
Furthermore the fact remains that Yuvvraaj does not have even a single
song which can be called just mibdblowing or plain awesome as per the
ARR standards etc. comparing to Taal it still remains a HUGE
disappointment, if not for us (ARR fans) certainly it is for masses.
the weakest songs of Dil se, Taal or Bombay are still better than
strongest song/s of Yuvvraaj.

lets analyze it. Mastam mastam is good, it grows, melody is Rahmanish,
Sonu is perfect, but again it is not something instantly loved by
masses. Zindagi is again good but nothing exceptional. it heavily
relies on vocals, too little music, no traditional ARR interludes etc.
Man mohini is very good but alas too short, which is completely un-
understandable, why did not ARR put a few more minutes to it???
strange. Dil ka risha is very good again, orchestra is great. it would
be loved more than Zindagi, Mastam, Man mohini by masses. however it
is a very situational song, not something you will find people humming
or playing on streets etc. Shano shano is one of the weakest songs of
ARR ever, people will not find anything special in it. it is not very
different than dozens of Pritam and others' songs releasing every day.
even Pappu (JTYJN) was far far far far far far better. so at the end
the only song remains is Tu muskura which will be liked by the masses
but again there is nothing very special in it. it is likable but not
something blockbuster etc. it is in the league of recent Tu bin bataye
(RDB) and Milo wahan wahan (Ada) though the two were far far better.
just think of some of ARR's biggest hits and ask yourself honestly can
we compare any of Yuvvraaj's songs with Satrangi, Dil se, Chaiyyan
chaiyyan (Dil se) Taal se taal, ishq bina, ramta jogi (Taal), Kehna hi
kya, Hamma hamma, Tu hi re (Bombay) and those from Rangeela, Saathiya,
Lagaan, Roja, Sapnay etc etc or even recent lesser hits rang de
basanti (RDB), khwaja mere khwaja, azeem-o-shaan (JA) etc and those
from Guru etc. and you will get the answer.

hence i am certainly not surprised by the reactions of masses. ARR
here really disappointed, because of Ghai-ARR combo people were
expecting something as fantastic as Taal, but there is no comparison
between Taal and Yuvvraaj. at least if you ask me if i give 10/10 to
Taal i will give only 4/10 to Yuvvraaj. ARR should have experimented
in some other low profile album but certainly not in Yuvvraaj. also a
film solely based on music certainly required some instantly classic
music, like Taal.

Rahman's music can be categorized under 5 broad categories:

  1) Suffi/Devotional
  2) Indian Classical/semi classical/raaga based
  3) Western classical/symphony
  4) Folk/Indian regional/world reigional
  5) Hip hop/techno/electronica/jazz (western pop)

In yuvvraaj, he has combined numbers 2, 3, and 5 in the most unique
way more than any other MD has done in the past. This is what makes
the Yuvvraaj album so special. Many have combined 1 and 2 well, 2 and
3, 4 and 5. But, rarely has anyone combined 5 with any other number
other than 4 or at most 3, and that too in rudimentary ways.

Rahman has used these styles in different combinations in different
  albums:

Jodha Akbar is largely 1 and 2 with small 3
Jaane Tu is largely 5 with some 3 and small 2
Ada is mostly 2, some 3, some 5, some 4

There is almost always a 2 and 3 in each of Rahman's albums these days
with heavy emphasis on 4 and 5 in his Tamil soundtracks of late. I
miss the 1s and 2s in his Tamil works!

  Which combination is your favorite?

  My favorite is 1,2,3!

[arr] First Impression

2008-10-21 Thread Vithur
This is not really a review. It is just the first impression that that these
songs have had on me. I am going to give them my stars anyway :)

Yuvvraaj - A.R.Rahman and Gulzar have teamed up alright but that Jaane Tu Ya
Janane Na spark is missing. Tu Meri Dost hai which has already hit the TV
screens is undoubtedly the best track of the album. Salman Khan has managed
to strangle Beethoven in one of the tracks but there are other tracks that
sound good. The album surprisingly has 8 original tracks and just one remix.
The first impressions are not mind blowing but I am hoping that it might
start sounding good to ears once I get to watch Katrina in the videos
:). Until then, they will all be any other ARR melodious numbers to me. I
give it three stars out of five (***).

Jahanzeb, I really understand your feelings ! Even everyone has expected
more than 100% above than this end product I know you are a die hard fan
of Rahman, but still what must we expect ?

Rahman cant put a Chhaiyya Chaiyya or Ghagan Ghagan in Yuvraaj. Songs are
strongly based on Script and related to Western musical raagas [ Though I
dont know much about it ]

*Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter.

*Can you just hum a tone Rahman has to compose in coming years ? Please dont
take this an offensive mail. I am just curious... I just try to do so, but
somehow or other, it will resemble to any other songs of Rahman or the
other.

No body is perfect. Rahman is also a human being. Errors can occur. But in
rare case Rahman went wrong. So just relax, hear good music... If you really
didnt like this, wait for another Rahman release or switch to any other
Bollywood albums :) Movie Fashion has some really good music rendered by
Salim Sulaiman.

Anyhow, I strictly think that when it comes to picturization of all these
longs, you would love more :)

Have a great day ahead Dude :)

albums had many songs loved by masses (and critics) e.g., Tere bina,
Mayya mayya, Barso re (Guru), Pappu, Aditi, Kahin to (JTYJN) etc etc.

[arr] [ Non - ARR ] How to Configure Rahman Yahoo Groups in your Gmail

2008-10-21 Thread Farzad khaleel
Hello Guys,

Rather than any other forums or communities, I really love this place where
true fans really interact with each other. I introduce this fan clubs to
many of my friends and they all used to complain that it is not user
friendly to reply to each mails and read the follow ups. So if any of the
members is having difficulty in doing the follow ups and replying to the
emails, here is a good way to optimize the group in a user friendly manner.

The steps to configure Yahoo groups in Gmail.

1. Please configure the A R Rahman fan group to your gmail address in the
link www.arrahmanfans.com

2. If this is already being done, then it is fine.

3. Once Subscribed to the fan group all mails will be forwarded to your
Gmail address. ie Posts and related follow ups.

4. Once the email arrives in you gmail inbox, open one of the emails. Then
follow these steps.

   - Open an email of ARR Yahoo Group.
   - Besides Delete button, you will find More Actions
   - Click More Actions
   - Then click Filter Messages like these
   - Then Click Next Step
   - Tick the box Skip the inbox
   - Tick the box Apply the label
   - Click New Label
   - Type in the label name as A R Rahman or something you wish.
   - Also Tick Also apply filter to XX conversations below.
   - Then click Create Filter
   - Now a filter has been created and all email will be now moved to the
   Rahman Folder
   - Now you can manage and read the email posts in much a user friendly
   manner.

Hope this helps, many our Fellow Rahmaniacs. If you already know this,
please ignore this email :)

Hail Rahman :)

  So, is might right ?

We also need to understand that the days of one or two newspapers
throughout a city, one TV channel , no internet have gone by. So with the
media channels increasing, the trash that comes with it is also going to
increase.

Jahanzeb,

The true fact is you are disapponinted with the music but its only
you..but there is something called difference of opininion!!!

a lot of people both here and orkut ARRahman communitiy..liked the
music. well you can always compare with Taal, Dilse, Rangeela. but
really you should spend some time reading the reviews came out when
those were out. I'm sure there will be another Janhanzeb trying to
make people understand how Arr disapointed yet again. but outof
nowhere it becomes a classic after a year for some of those.

I have nothing against your taste...but Here is the most imp point
you migt havs missed!!
1.ARR is the highly paid music director...paid big bugs!!!
2.Big deal producers still trying to get ARR as their film music
director. They wait more time than even a ARR-Fan waiting for ARR's
release.
Do you think the producers like ARRs divine feelings??..or they like
his recording theater,or place where he lives or they liked him
because he composed Roja, Dil se, Rangeela(hahaa). na na
na..this aint joke!! they go to him because of the MASS, CURRENT
MARKET not the 1996 popularity..and these cant be given only by
Fans but a lot lot more people need to like the music.

but here is the catch with ARR - The MASS you are talking about is
the FANS. If ARR fans like it then it already reached the mass. be
assured about it.If you dont like it guess what? I pity you. You are
one of those small..tiny winy group who doesnt likes this..
sorry!! no Offense...you asked for it bro.!!

dont glue your eyes and ears to your music system with Yuvvraaj
playing..just relax yourslef.focus on your normal day to day life
and have this song played in yoru car, living room when you have
dinner..rom nowhere it hits you like a storm...!!

No way. Shano and Mastam are going to be on every youth's tongue, me think.

 even recent ARR
albums had many songs loved by masses (and critics) e.g., Tere bina,
Mayya mayya, Barso re (Guru), Pappu, Aditi, Kahin to (JTYJN) etc etc.

Agreed. So?

Furthermore the fact remains that Yuvvraaj does not have even a single
song which can be called just mibdblowing or plain awesome as per the
 ARR standards etc.

Hmm. I thought about it and I find that I have to agree with you.

So, I also concede that even though Yuvraj is an album for the masses
and it has good softer songs also (manmohini, zindagi), still, I have to
agree that there is no mindblowing song AS PER ARR STANDARDS.

I think that is the area where the freedom ARR gets makes the whole
difference. Mani gives ARR complete freedom, so ARR's every Mani album
has one or more mindblowing songs. Deepa mehta gives ARR complete
freedom, so ARR's every Deepa album has one or more mindblowing songs.

But, even though Ghai's inputs have done wonders in Taal and Yuvraj,
those have restricted ARR from giving a mindblowing song in Yuvraj.

But, I would not complain. ARR is operating in a commercial world, and
Yuvraj is having all the potential of becoming the biggest commercial
hit of ARR's career. That would help him. And it would help us fans also
when we get ridiculed by ARR's detractors who never fail to highlight
when Pritam or Himesh's songs top the chart.

And, me think, that is what Ghai wanted - compromise on mindblowing song
and give an outright commercial hit. And ARR/Ghai have succeeded like
anything in this album.

comparing to Taal it still remains a HUGE
disappointment, if not for us (ARR fans) certainly it is for masses.

Why are you so inclined on keeping us fans in a separate category apart
from masses? Does it satisfy your ego that you are on a higher ivory
tower as a fan compared to lowly, meanly, measly masses. It is not so.
We are all humans, made equal by our Creator.

This album is going to bring millions of new fans to ARR's fold. Masses
will become ARR fans after listening to this album. You think that is
going to dilute the superiority of ARR fans. I differ.

the weakest songs of Dil se, Taal or Bombay are still better than
 strongest song/s of Yuvvraaj.

That is going to personal taste now.

I have written that I personally found Ishq bina a tad too sweet,
sacharine sweet, for my liking. I didn't like any remix, and western in
Taal. My find in that was Ni main samajh gayi, Nahin Samne, jangal mein
koyal bole, taal se taal mila, etc.

I am not able to compare Taal with Yuvraj. They are different genre of
songs.

And, for Dil Se and Bombay, or even Guru, or Yuva: well, Mani is Mani,
yaar. Add, 1947 Earh, Water: Well, Deepa Mehta is Deepa Mehta. Ghai is
different.

The only album of ARR that I outright disliked is Love Bird.

lets analyze it. Mastam mastam is good, it grows, melody is Rahmanish,
Sonu is perfect, but again it is not something instantly loved by
 masses.

here, you lost me.

Mastam is the so cathy, yet soothing. It is going to be loved by masses.

Zindagi is again good but nothing exceptional. it heavily
relies on vocals, too little music, no traditional ARR interludes etc.

So? It is a different song. It has its own style, its own ingredients.
That is how ARR gave this song, and it is great in its existing form. If
ARR has changed a single thing in it, that would have become a different
song.

too little music? Seems you have forgotten Khamosh Raat of Takshak
that would hold the ARR's all time record for minimal music, me think.

Man mohini is very good but alas too short, which is completely un-
understandable, why did not ARR put a few more minutes to it???

Now, I would say your think line is irrational. ARR has capability to
make Manmohini 2 hours song, but Ghai wouldn't put a 2 hours manmohini
in his film. So why make it 2 hours?

Ghai has taken a liking for pure classical for some time, for a change,
for some reason. Kishna had Kaahe Ujadi Mori neend (ID), and he wanted a
short piece having pure classical. That is what he got.

strange. Dil ka risha is very good again, orchestra is great. it would
be loved more than Zindagi, Mastam, Man mohini by masses. however it
is a very situational song, not something you will find people humming
 or playing on streets etc.

Exactly, and you should have left Mastam out of this logic. Mastam is
what people can humm out all day.

Shano shano is one of the weakest songs of
 ARR ever, people will not

[arr] [Semi-ARR] - ARR's influence

2008-10-21 Thread Anil Nair
  From a blog
http://gordongartrelle.blogspot.com/2008/10/music-gang-gang-dance.html

Its amazing how many people ARR has influenced over the past 2 decades
and will continue to do so forever. Every now and then you see his name pop
up on some random webpage citing his brilliance and exemplifying his
stature as one of the greatest names in the realms of the musical world.

Yet another example .this one
*When asked which musicians influence their current sound both DeWitt and

Tuesday, October 21, 2008 Music: Gang Gang
Dancehttp://gordongartrelle.blogspot.com/2008/10/music-gang-gang-dance.html
 http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/10/21/arts/gangspan.jpg
GordonGartrelle super-favorites Gang Gang Dance were featured in the New
York Times yesterday. Lizzi Bougatsos drops some knowledge about being in
New York in the early 2000's and not feeling dudes on Ludlow in leather
jackets letting the Strokes be the official New York reppers.

Like Yeasayer's music with their brown guitar dude Anand Wilder (which is
really his government, holy shit), Lizzi's vocals have always reminded me of
Bollywood music. I wasn't sure if I was going crazy or if the melodies seem
inherently Bollywood to me. I thought maybe I was being a race dude who
wanted to take Indian credit for something that may have not been Brown at
all. Thankfully I'm not insane as the article sheds light on Lizzi's
appreciation of pygmy, Ethiopian and Bollywood music. Also, it points out
that this ain't no Brooklyn band, they rep Manhattan.

Upon further digging I found an article in from Drowned in Sound that sheds
more light on their taste for BrOWnSOundZ, as I call it. *When asked which
musicians influence their current sound both DeWitt and Bougatsos strike in
agreement over Indian composer AR Rahman*. Rawwar unashamedly documents
their applying a particular focus on a newfound pop sensibility, with Rahman
amongst many other Bollywood influences applied, acting as a signal of
intent but with each element of the quartet suitably splintering violently
against one another. Sonically, the sounds are all over the place. There is
a lot in there that inspires as a producer and relates to what we do.
Bougatsos snaps her head with agreement: There is common cinematic quality
between our sound.

Hell yeah. Please cop Saint Dymphna as it's probably the most accessible
their music has been and I dig it for that. Probably top 5 on my year.

Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/21/arts/music/21gang.html
Drowned in Sound: http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/2321363

Kind of related, I've been thinking about music a lot lately and more
specifically my own music. I want to start working on a new project thats
spaced out as shit, involves sampling Bollywood tunes to the point where
it's not clear where the samples come from, singing sparsely in autotune
only to be heavily delayed and not really singing at all, with some bassy
ass drums. On some Koushik, El Guincho, Panda Bear type jumpoff
conceptually. Conceptually, I mean, that's the concept right there. But how
I'm gonna do that though?

Re: [arr] Re: Rediff Review - Yuvvraaj - followed by idiotic comments

2008-10-21 Thread Alfa Andrews
I havent written a lot in this group but that doesnt mean i dont like Rahman.
To me, he is the BEST THING EVER that happened to Indian Music.

The first time i heard Yuvvraaj music, i felt that was a load of crap. But hey,
thats what i felt when i heard Kaadhalan first. Same with Dil Se, or Taal. I
cant remember one of Rahman's that i liked the first time. But Dil Se and Taal
went on to become my all time favourites. He makes this wierd kind of music
that grows on you then makes you go crazy over it. Thats one of the things that
makes him a music director different from others. He doesnt bring out stereo
type music lik Pritham does or stupid Himesh Reshamayya does. (God, im
comparing Ferraris to Maruthi 800s. Pritam and Himesh should be proud that at
least i said their name in the same breath as Rahman's). A good critique finds
the strong points of a piece that he is critiquing. The main point my brother
Jehanzeb missed out here is that, the music is different from what bollywood is
churning out day in day out. It takes time for someone to get used to that
music. That never means the music is
bad. Your ears are atuned to mainstream Himesh, Pritam or whatever. They may
give you short time ecstasy But Rahman brings that mystique to a song which
makes you want to listen to it again when you havent actually liked it the
first time. Then you listen it a second time and think Thats not bad after
all. The third time you go I kinda like it. Then after a few time you go,
Wow! thats wonderful. I have gone through that phase with every one of his
compositions. So my point is even if Yuvvraaj ends up being Rahmans weakest
ever, it is better than the rest out there... (Its my opinion and solely my
opinion)..

Jahanzeb,

The true fact is you are disapponinted with the music but its only
you..but there is something called difference of opininion!!!

a lot of people both here and orkut ARRahman communitiy.. liked the
music. well you can always compare with Taal, Dilse, Rangeela. but
really you should spend some time reading the reviews came out when
those were out.

2.Big deal producers still trying to get ARR as their film music
director. They wait more time than even a ARR-Fan waiting for ARR's
release.
Do you think the producers like ARRs divine feelings??.. or they like
his recording theater,or place where he lives or they liked him
because he composed Roja, Dil se, Rangeela(hahaa) . na na
na..this aint joke!! they go to him because of the MASS, CURRENT
MARKET not the 1996 popularity. .and these cant be given only by
Fans but a lot lot more people need to like the music.

but here is the catch with ARR - The MASS you are talking about is

Rahman cant put a Chhaiyya Chaiyya or Ghagan Ghagan in Yuvraaj.
Songs are
strongly based on Script and related to Western musical raagas [
Though I
dont know much about it ]

*Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter.

Please dont
take this an offensive mail. I am just curious... I just try to do

somehow or other, it will resemble to any other songs of Rahman or
the
 other.

No body is perfect. Rahman is also a human being. Errors can occur.
But in
rare case Rahman went wrong. So just relax, hear good music... If
you really
didnt like this, wait for another Rahman release or switch to any
other
Bollywood albums :) Movie Fashion has some really good music

 Salim Sulaiman.

Anyhow, I strictly think that when it comes to picturization of all
these

Man mohini is very good but alas too short, which is completely
un-
understandable, why did not ARR put a few more minutes to it???
strange. Dil ka risha is very good again, orchestra is great. it
would
be loved more than Zindagi, Mastam, Man mohini by masses. however
it
is a very situational song, not something you will find people
humming
or playing on streets etc. Shano shano is one of the weakest songs
of
ARR ever, people will not find anything special in it. it is not
very
different than dozens of Pritam and others' songs releasing every
day.
even Pappu (JTYJN) was far far far far far far better. so at the
end
the only song remains is Tu muskura which will be liked by the
masses
but again there is nothing very special in it. it is likable but
not
something blockbuster etc. it is in the league of recent Tu bin
bataye
(RDB) and Milo wahan wahan (Ada) though the two were far far
better.
just think of some of ARR's biggest hits and ask yourself honestly
can
we compare any of Yuvvraaj's songs with Satrangi, Dil se, Chaiyyan
chaiyyan (Dil se) Taal se taal, ishq bina, ramta jogi (Taal),
Kehna hi
kya, Hamma hamma, Tu hi re (Bombay) and those from Rangeela,
Saathiya,
Lagaan, Roja, Sapnay etc etc or even recent lesser hits rang de
basanti (RDB), khwaja mere khwaja, azeem-o-shaan (JA) etc and
those
from Guru etc. and you will get the answer.

hence i am certainly not surprised by the reactions of masses. ARR
here really disappointed, because of Ghai-ARR combo people were
expecting something as fantastic as Taal, but there is no
comparison
between Taal and Yuvvraaj. at least if you ask me if i give 10/10
to
Taal i will give only 4/10 to Yuvvraaj. ARR should have
experimented
in some other low profile album but certainly not in Yuvvraaj.
also a
film solely based on music certainly required some instantly
classic
  music, like Taal.

discussing.

they go to him because of the MASS, CURRENT
MARKET not the 1996 popularity..and these cant be given only by

of course i and everyone here knows this. the point here what we are
discussing is that with yuvvraaj ARR could not deliver an album which
is as highly liked by the masses as taal, dil se etc.

here is the catch with ARR - The MASS you are talking about is
the FANS. If ARR fans like it then it already reached the mass. be
 assured about it.

i don't agree. the masses are not fans. there are lots of his albums
which were not liked by masses but of course were liked by his fans.

If you dont like it guess what? I pity you. You are
one of those small..tiny winy group who doesnt likes this..
 sorry!! no Offense

i never said i am not liking it, i am only saying it is not one of
ARR's bests. and disappoints as album of a Ghai-ARR combo especially
after masterpiece Taal.

[arr] Ghajini Music - Rhythm and Blues

2008-10-21 Thread Chord
Here's a reminder to everyone about the article giving us a glimpse
into Ghajini's music. Look for influences such as soul, gospel, and
funk. I hope Blaaze and rap is not included. I expect lots of bass
guitar, synth, heavy beats with little or no ethnic percussion.

http://rahmaniac.wordpress.com/2008/05/17/ghajini-music-of-rahman-a-little-bit-hatke/

If R and B is going to be in Ghajini, here's a bit of history and info
on R and B if anyone is interested:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm_and_blues

Seems like Rahman is really trying to stand out from the crowd and be
different as much as possible. He's doing a good job at it!

Totally agree! Guess what? This is the first song in the album that
took me by storm. As you said, something very addictive, very
seductive - you can't help shake a leg or twitch your body to those
steps...MAN, what a song... and the rap version is astounding too!

But I thing this is one of the greatest song which will create great
history It has got some strange tune built inside which is
compelling to
go to floor every time...same reaction I got in the song
Maramkothiye from
 Ah Aha...

Shano Shano is taking me in trance while the female voice is
rendering a
 beatiful tune.

I heard the same kind of critisism for Rukmani Rukmani, Humba
Humba, to
some extent Chaiyan Chaiyan (voice doesn'r suit Sahrukh etc), and
more
recently Pappu and Taxiall these songs proved Rahman's
capability to
get everyone on the dance floor all these tunes has something

that is
