[Ontbirds] OFO Big Sit Point Pelee May 11,2019
Hello Ontbirders Tom Hince, Paul Pratt, and I had lots of fun on our Big Sit fundraiser for the Ontario Field Ornithologists. We used the same location as last year, west side of the tip of Point Pelee National Park. Park staff (especially Sarah Rupert) kindly allowed early access to the Tip and were very supportive. Again, many friends dropped by through the day offering support and even adding a bird or two to the list. Unlike last year’s unsettled weather it was a beautiful sunny day; not the best for an exciting birding day. Kathi Cavanaugh Hince brought us hot coffee and snacks plus enough food for an army! Greatly appreciated by the team. Jeremy Bensette made sure we didn’t miss anything! Our final total was 108 species. Last year we recorded 110 species. The top bird was a Yellow-billed Cuckoo which landed briefly in a tree beside the van. Thanks to all those who contributed to the OFO fundraiser (visit www.ofo.ca to contribute). It was again a wonderful experience! [Ontbirds] 100th Ottawa-Gatineau CBC preliminary results
The 100th Ottawa-Gatineau Christmas Bird Count took place on Sunday,December 16, 2018. A total of 75 species were reported (average count 72 species). Highlights included Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (2nd record) and Rose-breasted Grosbeak (4th record). It was a pleasant day weather wise with an overnight low of -5c and a daylight high of +2c. With only a few centimeters of snow left on the ground the overall coverage was good. The Ottawa and Rideau Rivers were still mainly open but since the deep freeze during the latter part of November, a number of waterbirds were absent and late lingering land birds disappeared. Fortunately most species of winter finches were found in varying numbers. Other notable species included 4 Barrow's Goldeneye, 3 Belted Kingfisher, 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker, 1 Winter Wren, and 1 Swamp Sparrow. There were a number of species missed including Gray Partridge, Great Horned Owl, and Northern Flicker. I'd like to thank the co-compilers, Bernie Ladouceur and Daniel Toussaint, the sector leaders Quebec side: Aylmer: Rod Dubois, Hull:Daniel St. Hilaire, Ontario side: Britannia: Bruce Di Labio, Ottawa: Aaron Hywarren, and Gloucester: Bernie Ladouceur and feeder coordinator Lorraine Elworthy. Finally, on behalf of the Ottawa Field Naturalist Club I'd like to thank the Club des ornithologues de I'Outaouais for organizing the amazing dinner and celebration of both the 100th Ottawa CBC and their club's 40th anniversary. The weather was a challenge but we sheltered under the tailgate of the van when the rains came and Kathi Cavanaugh Hince brought us hot coffee and a hot lunch to keep us going. Michael A. Biro brought some hot potatoes and a gnatcatcher. Mike Runtz snagged the only Bay-breasted Warbler of the day. The top birds were a heard only Smith's Longspur (rattle call), six Red-throated Loons, 20 species of warblers, and all three scoters. Big misses were American Crow, Chimney Swift and Red-bellied Woodpecker. And drum roll please.. the grand total was 110 species smashing the previous Pelee Big Sit record! [Ontbirds] Ottawa: Black-throated Gray Warbler update
Hi Everyone Sadly this morning I found the Britannia ridge Black-throated Gray Warbler near death. After searching for a while I noticed a bird laying motionless at the base of a tree. I picked it up and held it in my hands to warm it up. Unfortunately it did not make it. The specimen will be donated to the Royal Ontario Museum. This individual was first observed on November 2 and was seen most days until December 2. After a week of absence it was back on site December 10-12. This warbler was enjoyed by many birders and photographers over its lengthy stay. Unfortunately insectivorous don't do well in the winter. [Ontbirds] Ottawa area: Carleton Place: Anna's Hummingbird
Hi Ontbirders There is an immature female Anna’s Hummingbird visiting a feeder in Carleton Place which is located west of Ottawa. This is the first accessible Anna’s Hummingbird for southern Ontario and one of the few for Ontario. This bird will generate lots of interest. The hummer was first observed on November 3 and I was asked to view it on November 10. On this date I determined it to be an Anna’s Hummingbird. A few small groups were able to view it on November 11 and 13 but due to the sensitivity of the situation, it wasn’t until November 16 that an agreement was arranged for a general alert. This could change at any time resulting in the homeowners removing the feeder from their premise. The homeowners do not want anyone on their property, but it’s possible to view the feeder from Mackenzie St, between Dufferin and Thomas. Look southeast opposite #61 Mackenzie over two backyards. The third yard has a wooden fence with a standard hummingbird feeder on it. The hummingbird shows up early, usually shortly after 7:30 and feeds a few times every 10-20 minutes depending on the temperature. A scope is necessary to identify the bird. Please park on Dufferin or another nearby street but not Mackenzie. You can view from the edge of the road, at 60 Mackenzie. Please do not go onto the lawn. Neighbours have been very pleasant to birders who have seen it and we would like to keep this as a positive experience for them! Good luck, Bruce Di Labio Carp, Ontario 613-715-2571 Directions: From southern Ontario you can take Hwy 401 to exit #544 and go north to Hwy 7 via Tweed. Turn right and drive east towards Ottawa. [Ontbirds] Ottawa: Razorbill and migrants
Hi Ontbirders Well it was another exciting day in Canada's capital! The Razorbill was found today by Jon Ruddy and Ottawa birders experienced another fallout/flight from the north. After a few days of good birding a number of us were stationed at various vantage points along the south side of Lake Deschenes (Ottawa River) and we weren't disappointed. With the continuing unsettled weather there was a good movement of waterbirds. Highlights included a small flight of Brant, likely 400+, 1 Purple Sandpiper, 4 Red-throated Loons, 250+ Dunlin, 1 Black-bellied Plover and 1 Greater Yellowlegs. So in general, lots of waterbirds on the move south as temperatures drop in the north. Lots of possibilities. With Jon Ruddy at Dick Bell Park, Mike Tate at Andrew Haydon Park and myself along with others at Britannia Pier it was a interesting time and lots of texting to keep up with all the observations. What a change in birding! The highlight of the day was the Razorbill observed in flight by Jon Ruddy as it landed off Dick Bell Park. The word went out and numerous birders got to see this rarity. This represents the second record for the Ottawa-Gatineau 50 km district and one of the few records for eastern Ontario. There is a specimen record from October 14,1950 in Big Rideau Lake,Lanark County, a photographic record of a specimen from Wolfe Island on November 29, 1984, a record from Lake Dore, Renfrew county, December 1-5,1989, and another sight record from the St. Lawrence River at Cornwall on November 27, 1987. The first record for the Ottawa District was found on October 22,2011 by Mark Gawn and was last observed on November 1, 2011.I would watch out for anything along the Ottawa River since these birds are likely from the Gulf of St. Lawrence. [Ontbirds] Ottawa area: Razorbill, Purple Sandpipers, and Golden Eagles
Hi Everyone Great day birding the Ottawa River with numerous highlights. This morning at around 8:00 a.m. while birding Dick Bell Park I observed 3 Purple Sandpipers. There were a number of small flocks of Dunlin over the river as well as 2 Sanderling, 2 Pectoral Sandpipers and 4 Brant. The Purples were very nervous and didn't land on the rocky point but continued flying west. There were a number of scoters on the river including 40+ Black, 4 Surf and 2 White-winged along with 18 male Long-tailed Ducks. At least one late lingering Great Egret was present at Andrew Haydon Park. Late morning I birded Constance Bay. With the changing weather conditions I headed to the point area to view the Ottawa River/Constance Bay. Within a few minutes I spotted my first Golden Eagle migrating south overhead and after an hour I observed 6 Golden and 1 Bald Eagle. My highest one day count ever for Golden's in the Ottawa area. This once rare species has been been increasing in numbers over the past 3 decades. At around 12:30 pm I spotted a Razorbill offshore. The bird disappeared twice for a period of time but fortunately was present when the first group of birders from Ottawa arrived but later disappeared offshore again for any late arrivals. This represents the second record for the Ottawa district. A total of 9 Purple Sandpipers were found during the day. Good birding, Bruce Di Labio Directions: Constance Bay is located NW of Ottawa off Dunrobin Road and Point Restaurant is off Bayview Drive. [Ontbirds] Eastern Ontario: Cobden: Thick-billed Murre
Hi Everyone First and foremost I'd like to thank Burke Korol for finding the Thick-billed Murre and getting the word out. I was birding along the Ottawa River when the news hit. I headed straight to Cobden followed by Tate and company. Fortunately the murre was still present and we had good views and managed a couple of distant photos. If you are considering venturing up to Renfrew County tomorrow Muskrat Lake is at Cobden. It’s a long somewhat narrow lake with only a few public access points. So far the murre has been staying at the south end of the lake which is where the town is located. The first location to check is the public boat launch which is signed off HWY 17. A scope is definitely helpful for viewing over the lake. During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s flights of Thick-billed Murres appeared almost every few years along the Ottawa River and nearby inland lakes during mid-November to late December. Sometimes large numbers were sighted and occasionally hundreds were reported. Since the early 1950s there has been only a few documented records in Ontario including one along the Ottawa River at Deschenes Rapids, Ottawa on December 5-6, 1995, and another more recent record from the Kingston waterfront on December 3-4, 2013. Based on the recent records these birds did remain in the area overnight. Good luck, Bruce Directions: Muskrat Lake at Cobden is easy to find. If you are coming from southern Ontario you can either take Hwy 401 to Hwy 416 and west to Hwy 17 to Cobden. If you are more adventitious you can cut up from HWY 401 and work your way to Cobden overland. [Ontbirds] Ottawa: Red-throated Loon Fallout
Hi Everyone Today, November 25 I spent most of the morning birding Lake Deschenes-Ottawa River. It was a great morning and I observed 226 Red-throated Loons (counted them all!) in 4-5 flocks with a few singles too. At first the loons were resting but as the weather started to clear, a small number began to take flight and fly around between Britannia Pier and Deschenes Rapids before settling back on the lake. As the morning progressed the visibility improved and though distant you could see them well and they appeared to be all winter adults. Since the early 1980s I've encountered RTLO fallout/flights a number of times on Lake Deschenes, (1983-2010) between October 27 to November 23 with the largest fallout, 2000-3000 birds on November 12,1984. Today's fallout/flight is the latest date, the previous late date for a Red-throated Loon fallout/flight was on November 23,2010 when Tom Hanrahan and I observed a flock of 120+ on Lake Deschenes. The origin of these fallouts/flights is still somewhat of a mystery. Are they birds coming out of Hudson/James Bay due to a freeze up or from the St.Lawrence River? I'm sure weather plays an important role with the combination of low cloud ceiling, fog and precipitation. Good birding, Bruce Directions: There are a number of vantage points along the south shoreline of Lake Deschenes/Ottawa River including Shirley's Bay Boat Launch, Dick Bell Park, and Britanna Pier. [Ontbirds] Presqu'ile Pr.Pk.: Hudsonian Godwit, Red Knot and warblers
Hi Everyone A group of us spent part of the day birding the park. Despite the rain the birding was excellent. Shorebird watching was very good with a total of 13 species including 1 Hudsonian Godwit, 2 Red Knot, 1 American Golden Plover, 78 Sanderling, 6 Baird's Sandpiper, 1 White-rumped Sandpiper, and 1 American Golden-Plover. These birds were located between Beach #1 and Owen Point. The highlight of the outing was an amazing movement of land birds, mainly warblers at Calf Pasture. Over 500+ warblers were observed, 18 species, as they passed through the area moving north. It was reminiscent of a spring Pelee reverse migration. It was an incredible sight as the birds quickly moved south to north through the vegetation. High counts included Black and White Warbler 20+, Bay-breasted Warbler 20+, Black-throated Green Warbler 50+, Nashville Warbler 50+, Northern Parula 50+, American Redstart 20+, and 130 unidentified warbler. We also recorded Red-eyed Vireo 70+, Warbling Vireo 6, Philadelphia Vir eo 2, and Blue-headed Vireo 3. With all of the activity we also a number of birds of prey including 1 Peregrine Falcon, 1 Merlin, 1 American Kestrel and 1 Red-tailed Hawk. Good birding, Bruce Directions: Courtesy of Fred Helleiner: To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton. Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid that is available at the Park gate. [Ontbirds] Kingston Area: Snowy Owls
Hi Everyone Spent most of the weekend birding the Kingston area including Wolfe and Amherst Island. The Snowy Owls continue to dominant the winter birding scene with 15+ on February 8th on Wolfe Island, mainly the west end of the island and 11 on February 9th on Amherst Island, with at least 5 out on the ice along the south shore. There were very few hawks observed, 2 American Kestrel on Wolfe and 3 Red-tailed Hawks on Amherst Island. One Northern Shrike was observed at the east end ( Martin Edwards Reserve) of Amherst Island. Overall very few land birds on either island but did see a couple of small flocks of Snow Bunting on Wolfe Island. There was virtually no water birds due to the ice conditions except a small number in the ice chocked ferry channels. At the Kingston ferry dock a flock of 110+ Greater Scaup, 3 Lesser Scaup,1 Red-breasted Merganser,6 Common Merganser, and 2 Common Goldeneye were crammed into the limited open water. At the Millhaven dock a flock of 6 Red-breasted Mergansers w ere dealing with a similar situation. Watch for Snowy Owls on the ice when crossings. The road into the Owl Woods is impassable with amazingly high snow drifts but there is a well packed path you can follow to the woods. I haven't seen snow banks so high on Amherst Island in years! Interestingly we observed a group of 4 Ring-necked Pheasant (3 male,1 female) and 1 female feeding on the remaining Wild Grapes that were still on the vine in a Hawthorne tree. This is likely due to the deep snow this winter. I've only observed pheasants in trees once, back in 1972 at the Arboretum in Ottawa. The warm water lagoon at the Invista/DuPont Plant had 200+ Mallard,15+ American Black Duck, 7 Gadwall, and 6 American Coot. Please review the OFO Birding code of ethics at http://www.ofo.ca/ofo-docs/Code_of_Ethics.pdf Good birding, Bruce Directions: Amherst Island: Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off Hwy. 401 at exit 593 (County Rd. 4, Camden East) and drive south to the very end (Millhaven). Turn right on Hwy. 33 and drive 100 meters until you see the sign for the Amherst Island ferry. The ferry (20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is $9.00 Canadian round trip. There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on the ferry, and at the island ferry dock. The East End K.F.N. property ( Martin Edwards Reserve) is at the easternmost part of the island on the east side of the Lower Forty Foot Road. To reach the Owl Woods, turn left (east) at the four-way stop sign by the general store and drive 3.4 km along Front Rd. to the (seasonal) Marshall Forty-Foot Rd. [Ontbirds] Eastern Ontario: Snowy Owls and Northern Shrikes
Hi Everyone Just back from a weekend of birding various areas in eastern Ontario. The Snowy Owl continues to be found through most of the region in suitable habitat. Today on Wolfe Island we counted 13 Snowy Owls all on the west side of the island. All individuals appeared to be juvenile birds and very nervous. Most individuals flushed easily. Though the winds were out of the southwest at 30-35 km's with blowing snow most birds were perched on telephone poles, farm buildings and a few on the ground. Also saw 650+ Snow Buntings and a couple of Horned Lark. There was no open water except for the ice choked ferry channel. Most side roads had numerous snow drifts. On Saturday out in the Ste. Rose area there were 10+ Snowy Owls including a very tame individual that didn't flush even with 20+ photographers around it. This is likely one of the regularly baited Snowy Owls. In the Chesterville area another 5+ Snowy Owls were observed. It appears that many of these owls have set up a winter territory sin ce they were using the same perches back on December 28th. At the DuPont Plant's warm water lagoon there were 2 Mute Swan, 40+ Gadwall, 1 male Ring-necked Duck, and 8 American Coot. If you're still looking for Snowy Owls check your local airport! While leading a birding tour in Newfoundland and not seeing any, I finally got my Snowy Owl for NL while taxiing down the runway. When we landed home 3 were present! [Ontbirds] Eastern Ontario: Snowy owl irruption continues
Hi Ontbirds The Snowy Owl southward movement continues with more sightings from various areas in eastern Ontario. Today I observed 10+ in the Winchester area and yesterday 5 were found behind the Ottawa Airport. On the Massena -Cornwall CBC at least 3 were found. The overall total for eastern Ontario is now reaching 150 birds. This is unprecedented as far as I know for this region. Over the years there has been concentrated areas or hot spots like Wolfe or Amherst Island. With all of the sighting south of eastern Ontario there must be 100's of Snowy Owls in Ontario. I have found the best time to look for these owls is late day or on overcast days. Check all the telephone poles, fence posts, buildings in open farm land areas and tree tops. [Ontbirds] Eastern Ontario: Snowy Owl irruption
Hi Everyone The Snowy Owl southward irruption continues in eastern Ontario. Since early December the numbers have been slowly increasing with a noticeable movement on December 8th when a combined total of 25 individuals were observed in the Richmond and Casselman-Hawkesbury areas. Sightings continue to be reported all over eastern Ontario including concentrations in the Kingston area including both Wolfe and Amherst Island, Presqu'ile Provincial Park, Cobden, Winchester-Chesterville and along the St.Lawrence River from Cornwall to Brockville. This is likely the largest southward and most widespread movement of Snowy Owls in the past 4 decades. Based on reports, I estimate between 100-130+ Snowy Owls are either present or have passed through eastern Ontario moving further south in search of food. This movement coincides with a large movement in Newfoundland and in northeastern United States. Please remember to review OFO's birding code of ethics. http://www.ofo.ca/ofo-docs/Code_of_Ethics.pdf Good birding and Merry Christmas! [Ontbirds] Renfrew County: Lake Dore: Long-tailed Jaeger, Parasitic Jaeger, Little Gull, Northern Mockingbird
Hi Ontbirders Today, September 22nd, I spent 5 hours this morning birding the Lake Dore area. There were lots of flocks of Canada Geese migrating along with a few species of both diving and puddle ducks. Both the previously reported Long-tailed and Parasitic Jaegers were still present at 7:45a.m. but disappeared to the south after about 30 minutes. No Sabine's Gulls were found but a winter adult Little Gull was observed resting with 50+ Bonaparte's Gulls. At 11:15 a.m. a juvenile Long-tailed Jaeger was chasing Bonaparte's Gull off the boat launch at Biederman Park and disappeared at 11:30a.m. I left the area at noon without relocating any jaegers. An adult and 2 juvenile Northern Mockingbirds were observed feeding in an apple tree near Biederman Park. Other species of note included 4 Red-necked Grebe, 2 Horned Grebe, 1 imm. Bald Eagle, 30+ Palm Warbler, 2 Orange-crowned Warbler, 150+ Rusty Blackbird, and 8 White-crowned Sparrow. Directions: From Ottawa take 417 west to the second exit to Renfrew. [Ontbirds] Ottawa: Sabine's Gull
Hi Everyone This afternoon at 1:00pm I observed two juvenile Sabine's Gulls at Shirley's Bay. As I was scanning the limited mudflats, suddenly the 2 gulls appeared. I watched them briefly as they quickly passed over the area. I managed to take a couple of distant photos, then put out a local alert. Unfortunately they disappeared as quickly as they arrived. I spent the next 45 minutes scanning along the causeway but no luck. A group watched from the parking lot/boat launch too. Since they vanished so quickly I suspect they moved overland heading southwest. This is one of the earliest records for the Ottawa-Gatineau district and is 1 of the approximately 15 records of juveniles. Interestingly the majority of records have been recorded between September 12th and 25th.
