Re: cannot ping over frame relay

2000-05-25 Thread Brandon Carroll

You should make shure that your encapsulation is the same as the telco that
you are leasing the line from. Cisco defaults to HDLC and that doesn't work
for GTE circuits. For GTE it's Encapsulation frame-relay ietf, and lmi type
is ansi.

This is just an idea, but if you disabled port 23, and then enabled Port

that would work . I may try it in my lab later. Let me know if you can
figure something out.

2000-05-25 Thread Sammi

Please folks, let's not have this group degenerate into "papers" vs.
"hands on" ala the MCSE groups.
Of course real world is better, but paper can't hurt either.
Thing is not to project oneself as something they are not. I have my
CCNA and I readily admit I can't be thrown into the router world. But
that paper, along with my admin experience will get me into networking
I'm sure. And when I am hired on a network team I am fully prepared to
be at the bottom of the ladder doing grunt work again.

Also the router is smart enough not to dial a backup interface if you shut
the primary interface down on the router. You need to pull the cable or

Largest backbone.

2000-05-25 Thread NHK

Hi groups,

I just have this question in mind and would like to discuss it further
since public awareness is very little at this moment.

1) Who are the major Service Provider player which have the fastest (say
OC-255) connect to other regions like Asia, Europe and States other
than the mentioned SP here like compurserve, UUNET, AOL and AT&T?

2) Where and what are the backbone connection (or Exchange) does Asia have
to States (and other region?), where are they locate?

That's what I had in mind, but if anyone would like to add more interesting
Q&A to this discussion is much appreciate.

Thanks!

Hey,

Where can I find information on calculating the utilization on an
interface. Since I dont have any network management tools to use I want to
try to figure it out manually (if possible). Also are their any show
commands that show CPU and Memory resource utilization?

Thanks,

Pete

I just posted something else about this recently. One easy way if you
have expect installed is to run 'autoexpect', telnet to the router, run
one command, then exit. After that, exit autoexpect, and modify the
name of the command you ran with $argv. Then to run any command on that
one router, you'd just run

./script.exp 'some cisco IOS command here'

another way is to use an old livingston C utility called 'pmwho' still
available on their ftp site at

ftp://ftp.livingston.com/pub/le/contrib

or something very similar to that.

very strange that I've posted 6 answers now to the same two questions.
I think that was the last time.

Re: Calculating bandwidth utilization

2000-05-25 Thread David

you'll do it manually just like any network management tools would do
it. Take a timed snapshot from the interface counters (show interface)
to figure out bytes/sec. then you can divide that by the max bytes/sec
to get a percentage.

'sh proc' will give you a cpu usage line at the top.

'sh mem' shows various memory statistics.

RE: Backup interface never comes up.

2000-05-25 Thread Ryan Moffett

You could also shut down the serial interface on the far end of the link so
that the interface goes into a down/down state. Brad is right,
administratively shutting down an interface will not trigger the backup link
to come up.

the SHUT command on your primary interface will not bring the backup
interface up. so what you are seeing is definitely normal. if your backup
interface DID come up from a shut command on your primary interface, then
I'd say you have a broken router!

try using a floating static route instead...or pull the cable off the serial
port

RE: How to modify router's configuration with a script?

2000-05-25 Thread James Xie

Roger,

There is a perl module for cisco router configuration managment. It uses RCS
support version control, editing, pulling and pushing configurations.

You can either use the commands or call the modules in your own perl scirpts.

The module is located at: http://www.cpan.org/modules/01modules.index.html

Look for keyword cisco.

2000-05-25 Thread Arigo, Francis

"show int s0" or whatever interface you want to monitor.

There are two lines that say something similar to:

  5 minute input rate 216000 bits/sec, 27 packets/sec
  5 minute output rate 45000 bits/sec, 24 packets/sec

There's your 5 minute snapshot.

Routing Policy

2000-05-25 Thread Roger Lu

Hello,

I received a project from the managment team. Please see the diagram. They
want the network traffic between host A and B always cross the T1 line
between R1 and R2.

Host A connects to Internet through ISP1, host B connects to Internet
through ISP2. There is T1 line between router R1 and R2, which is inside the
Internet.

   __
Host A |--ISP1 R1---T1-- R2 ISP2 --|-- Host B
   |Internet_|

I have full control of router R1 and R2, host A and B, but have no control
over ISP1 and ISP2. I am not sure what is the best way to setup this kind
routing policy. Anybody has any experience/ideas, please shed some lights
here. Thanks!

PIX Firewall show connection counters

2000-05-25 Thread Cisco Wave

Hello There,

Is there any commands to clear the counters on a PIX ?
I amtrying to reset to 0 the numbers displayed by
"show connections".

It seems, the only way is a F/W reboot, to clear the
`show connections` counters in order to monitor max
number of TCP/IP connection through the PIX

Does anybody have a clue on this one ?

Thank you,

RE: CCNP and chances of finding a job

2000-05-25 Thread The Raven

Dollard,

You've got a point. I think everyone on the list would
agree that nothing can buy experience. It's
invaluable. But how do you expect one to get
experience when your job is limited to network &
desktop support with an ocassional router install? Do
you expect us all to get Cisco to employ us & give us
the experience? It's a catch-22. Employers only want
experienced people but not willing to give potential
employees with paper CCNA, CCNP, for example, a chance
to get that valuable experience. I guess that makes
privileged people like yourself more invaluable and
your job more secured.

update.

telnet a Cisco router and modify the configuration constantly according to
other condition. Anybody has any idea how to do it?

Thanks!

Calculating bandwidth utilization

2000-05-25 Thread mullanpw

Hey,

Where can I find information on calculating the utilization on an
interface. Since I dont have any network management tools to use I want to
try to figure it out manually (if possible). Also are their any show
commands that show CPU and Memory resource utilization?

Thanks,

Pete

Re: Backup interface never comes up.

2000-05-25 Thread Joe Martin

Since this is frame relay, an easy way to test it is to change your LMI type
on the interface to a type not being used and within 10/15 seconds the
interface will go down and the backup interface should go active.

Also, Backup does not work on multipoint sub-interfaces with the loss of a
PVC.

I think that this is a normal behaviour. The bri interface works until i put the
backup interface statement at s0. So it must be that the back up statment cause
the interface to be in standby

Re: Backup interface never comes up.

2000-05-25 Thread Brad Ellis

the SHUT command on your primary interface will not bring the backup
interface up. so what you are seeing is definitely normal. if your backup
interface DID come up from a shut command on your primary interface, then
I'd say you have a broken router!

try using a floating static route instead...or pull the cable off the serial
port

Subject: notebook PC as console

Sorry if this topic is way out of line and too stupid for most people, but
I'm really a Mac user, so I have an excuse. Because I will be teaching
Sniffer Pro classes, I have to buy a new notebook PC for taking on the
road. (Can't buy a Mac ;-()

My question: I want the PC to also act as a console port to Cisco routers
and switches. It seems from my cursory investigation that a lot of the
notebook PCs don't have a serial port anymore?? Or am I just not looking
hard enough at the spec sheets?

Many of them have a USB port. But does Cisco use USB for its console ports
yet? I don't think so!?

What do you all use for your PC console for a Cisco router or switch?

Once the router or switch is configured, of course I'll use Telnet to an
Ethernet port, but I'm worried about that initial config.

Thanks

Priscilla

Backup interface never comes up.

2000-05-25 Thread James Xie

Hi,

I am doing a study on DDR. On my router, I configured the bri0 interface, and
it works fine. The router can place a call to the other end and traffic
passes through
perfectly. (It means all the isdn interface and dialer configuration are
correct).

My problem is, once i placed the interface as a backup for another serial
interface
(frame relay ), the bri0 is placed in standby mode automatically and even
the layer 1
and layer 2 for the bri0 are administratively shutdown automatically. I
tried to shutdown
the primary frame relay interface and the backup bri0 never comes up.

I tried it on different routers with the same result.

Is this behavior normal or I missed something?

Thank you very much for advice.

Jim.

Attached is my configuration sample:

  int s0
encapsulation frame-relay
ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
backup delay 10 30
backup interface bri0
no shut

  int bri0
encapsulation ppp
ip address 10.1.2.1 255.255.255.0
isdn switch-type basic-ni1
isdn spid1 12345678 1234
isdn spid2 23456789 2345
dialer-group 1
dialer map ip 10.1.2.2 broadcast 6789
 no shut

Re: Foundry ServerIron

The company I work for just bought one. In my
opinion, it blows away the Cisco Local Director and is way cheaper.  We
purchased the 8 port Server Iron to load blance our Web servers.  It runs
the F5 load balancing software.  The Server Iron is Foundry's most
popular product, especially in the ISP market. They are usually on back
order though.

Re: Cat 1900 and Full Duplex

2000-05-25 Thread J Neib

Nevermind, I've discovered the answer. There used to be a model 1900C that
is half duplex only. That is the model most prevalent at our location.
That model is no longer available. The 1900 series now consists of the 1912
and 1924, both of which can do full duplex on their 10 meg ports. It turns
out that we have two of those, so I verified visually that the duplex
options is, in fact, in the port configuration section on the 1924 model.

RE: newbie purchase

2000-05-25 Thread Daniel Cotts

The two port serial network processor module has a different port than the
60 pin molex that you see on most newer routers. The cables are available.
>From specialty cable vendors (such as LoDanWest) if not from Cisco. The
Cisco part number for a V.35 DTE is CAB-NPV35TV2 and for a V.35 DCE is
CAB-NPV35CV2.

In a lab scenario you most likely will be connecting to a 2500 series that
does use the 60 pin serial ports. You have several choices on how to make
that connection. (a) Buy Cisco cables. One for the 4500 and one for the
2500. One will be DTE. The other DCE. The resulting cable is 20' long. (b)
Buy a specialty back to back cable.

What you propose is do-able. You will most likely pay a little more for the
odd cables. If you have additional budget, consider buying a four port
serial module instead of the two port. I've seen them on eBay in the
$600-700 range. It uses the 60 pin connectors. That will be your Frame Relay
switch among other things.

Around Y2K Cisco was providing free IOS updates to 11.0 or 11.1 for some
routers. Check to see if you can still get that. Anyone else know the
details??

RE: ISDN caller ID

2000-05-25 Thread Cohen, Michael

It is possible however not in the same way that IP address spoofing is.
ISDN/PSTN calls use out of band signalling to establish communications.
This means that there are totally seperate networks for actual voice traffic
and call signalling. The signalling network utilizes the System Signalling
7 (SS7) protocol suite. It is in the signalling network where caller ID
information is transmitted specifically in the ISDN User Part Initial
Address Message (ISUP IAM) which is sent to initiate a call accross the SS7
network. To answer your question, though I don't know exactly how one would
go upon manipulating the caller ID information contained in an ISUP IAM, it
is certainly possible to hack SS7. You would need access to a Signalling
Point (SP SS7 connection, usually a PBX) as this is where the SS7 network is
terminated, not at the local loop.

Thanks

Re: Percentage to success

2000-05-25 Thread John Dill

This is hard to quantify, if, you've taken the complete journey, you probably won't
have a great deal of recollection. Nevertheless, I'll take a stab:

Starting with not much experience but a good aptitude, I'd say that CCNP requires 10
times the effort of CCNA, while CCIE will ask about 10 times the effort of the CCNP.
So, by your numbers, I'd estimate:

CCNA is 1% to CCIE
CCNP is 10% to CCIE

- John

>>> "Hubert Pun" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 05/25/00 12:06PM >>>
Is it correct to say about the following:

CCNA is 10% to CCIE
CCNP is 50% to CCIE?

What I am looking at, is how far am I from CCIE when I obtain the CCNA
and CCNP.

I know that you can't get an exact answer. But I am just looking for
the time (in proportion) that I need to put to each certificate. Let
say I am starting from scratch.

If you can't find what you're really looking for (would
SnifferPro decode CDP packets ? Wassa Fluke say?), how
about a smaller switch/router ? A 1924, or maybe a SOHO
router; what's the smallest cisco box that'll go 100Mb ?

RE: Working it too hard?

2000-05-25 Thread Bartlett, DS1

Your DHCP requests are only going to be processed during startup. All the
router is going to do is handle a helper address, which means when a station
boots up it will send a broadcast asking for an IP. The router sees the
request and forwards the packet on as a unicast message. There is no real
impact on router performance for such a small task. Beware the idiot users
though who insist on shutting down their machine each time something
happens.

75 idiots can bring down any network. And remember all our jobs would be
real easy if only we could get rid of the users.

I'm trying to setup a temporary LAN and would like my router to
handle DHCP
requests.

My question is what if I'm asking the router to do too much?

I'm using a Cisco 1700 series router with about 75 computers running
win98.
The 1700 only has 1 static route to another router (no heavy
processing like
extensive access lists here) and nothing else. Am I asking this 1700
series
to handle too much?

How many PC's asking for IP's before it craps out? What if I use a
2600
series instead? How many PC's could it handle?

If it does crap out what can I expect as a reaction? It just
freezing or
something more sinister?

For every BYTE it sends. TCP sequences every byte. The sequence number in a
packet is the sequence number of the first byte in the packet. The ACK
number is the byte number that the receiver expects next. The window field
specifies how many bytes the receiver is ready to receive.

Other than that, your message is right on.

Re: CCNP and chances of finding a job

2000-05-25 Thread ken

the biggest problem I have, is finding a job where I can gain experience
with cisco routers. I have had 3 prior jobs dealing with PC's and internet
tech support but it's pretty tough to get my foot in the door with just a
CCNA. My goal here is to just be able to get a job, and what I'm wondering
is if a CCNP will land me one, because it seems like the ccna wont really
help much here. Not necessarily one that will pay me a good lump but one
where I can at least start to get some experience with routers. currently I
only have a 2501 here at home that my parents got for me.

Ken, WOW, congrats for that :) (thats the ken at cisco)

the other ken, yammy,
im sorry before hand, but im going to have to flame you before you do
something stupid.
DONT GET UR CCNP without exp. thats the kind of stuff, that ruined microsoft
certs, thats ruining the CCNA, and that will eventually ruin the CCNP. on
top of that, you'll have a much easier time passing the ccnp if you have
work experinence and get real life exposure to networking.
i worked hard to get my ccnp, and im going for the ccie now, and i'd love to
see my certs keep their value and not get devalorized because some ppl think
its the easy road to getting the pot of gold. its not, its a hard and
demanding job, theres always something to learn, and always networks with
problems. a CCNP is expected certain things, and in case you didnt know, if
cisco receives complaints about incompetent work on your part, they can
revoke your certification. please do yourself a favor by getting experience,
your employer might pay ur certs after that, with training, and you'll wa
ste less time on your own doing so.
Morgan
PS, any1 who wishes to flame me on this subject is free to do so, i
guarantee it wont look pretty in the end.
I've met one CCNP that had no exp and didnt know wtf he was talking about,
and i hope for the others out there i never meet one again.

Cat 1900 and Full Duplex

2000-05-25 Thread J Neib

Cisco's website documentation says that full duplex operation is available
on all ethernet and fastethernet ports. However, I have several 1900s and I
cannot see how to turn on full duplex operation on ethernet ports. The
fastethernet ports have an option under Port Configuration, but no such
setting exists for the 10baseT ports. There is also no mention when you
view the port whether it is running half or full, or if it autonegotiating.

Do only the new 1900 switches support full duplex on all ports?

Percentage to success

2000-05-25 Thread Hubert Pun

Is it correct to say about the following:

CCNA is 10% to CCIE
CCNP is 50% to CCIE?

What I am looking at, is how far am I from CCIE when I obtain the CCNA
and CCNP.

I know that you can't get an exact answer. But I am just looking for
the time (in proportion) that I need to put to each certificate. Let
say I am starting from scratch.

Thanks

Priscilla

RE: notebook PC as console

2000-05-25 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

Hi Priscilla,

If the notebook does not have any serial ports (9-pin-male or 25-pin-mail)
you can get a usb-to-serial converter. I do not know wheither you can get
Cisco USB console cables, but it might be worth a search.

A USB to 25-pin Serial can be found here:

Goto http://www.provantage.com and search for DLNK13U - they have 1 in
stock!!!

Ah, I just read that RFC. I see now that with the new QoS features, the
nationality and specific lineage of the avian carrier is not entirely
relevant...unless it's a penguin.

Re: CCNP and chances of finding a job

2000-05-25 Thread Billy Monroe

Well, what I am trying to do is get more theory doing the CCNP to have
chances to get a job like K Sacca described. I also got
a phone interview and I was successfull. During the face-to-face interview
with 7 persons I failed: most of questions were beyond CCNA level, and I
think that I could make it if I had achieved the CCNP knowledge. Of course a
degree and client-server experience and hands-on in the labs would be an
asset a job like that.

What should I ask for?

2000-05-25 Thread NeoLink2000

Hey Group,
Sorry for this not being a very technical question. I was just
wondering what I'm worth. I have been doing Network/Deskside support for 2
years now and I just recently acheived my CCNA. I had heard, when I first
started studying for Cisco Certs, that the average CCNA can start out aroung
55-65k. I am currently making around 40k and when a company asks me what I'm
looking for I don't want to cheat myself by giving a lower number than they
expected. Then again I don't want to give them too outrageous of a number and
lose my chance. Aftre all, I do understand that I am entry when it comes to
CCNA and would even be happy with 45k. Any idea's would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance all,

Just curious if anyone knows a good link for VoIP and VoIP management. I am

sure exactly how to integrate the voice management from PSTN to IP gateway.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

RE: CCNP and chances of finding a job

2000-05-25 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

There are three types of IT people: those with certs and no experience;
those with both; those without certs but with experience. Obviously those
with both will command the most responsibility and money; those with
experience/no certs will command a little less; and those with just certs
will command even less. Are you the kind of person that believes you should
be paid well for your certifications? Or are you a person who understands
that "everyone must pay their dues?"

A CCNP/no experience probably won't start at entry level but will be close.
A CCNA/no experience will be entry level. Either way, if you apply
yourself, you'll advance quickly (more quickly if you're a CCNP first).
What it's going to boil down to is, your girlfriend is right (in my
opinion): you should start as soon as you can gaining experience.
Experience only makes the certifications easier and job prospects brighter.
Now if YOU have a problem being known as entry-level (and some people
without experience do sometimes think they should get paid as well as those
with experience), then that's a personal issue you must deal with. And
that'll make your goals much harder to accomplish.

What are the chances of a CCNP finding a job without prior work experience
with routers and such? I'm debating this issue with my girfriend. She
thinks that job experience is more important, and that I should be looking
for a job to move me up. I, on the other hand, don't think I can find much
of a job with just a CCNA and would rather get a CCNP, but I'm not quite
sure if just a CCNP by itself can land me a job. Any help would be

Anyone wanna buy a sybex CIT study guide?
I'm gonna do the support 2.0 exam.
Just kidding but on this track doesanyone know what differences are between
the two exams, I am split as to which to do. Also any decent support 2.0
books out yet?
I have to say I was dissapointed with the wording of the CLSC exam and do
not want to go thro' that again with the CIT.

Thanks to all.
