Re: cannot ping over frame relay
You should make shure that your encapsulation is the same as the telco that you are leasing the line from. Cisco defaults to HDLC and that doesn't work for GTE circuits. For GTE it's Encapsulation frame-relay ietf, and lmi type is ansi. Please folks, let's not have this group degenerate into "papers" vs. "hands on" ala the MCSE groups. Of course real world is better, but paper can't hurt either. Thing is not to project oneself as something they are not. I have my CCNA and I readily admit I can't be thrown into the router world. Re: Calculating bandwidth utilization
you'll do it manually just like any network management tools would do it. Take a timed snapshot from the interface counters (show interface) to figure out bytes/sec. then you can divide that by the max bytes/sec to get a percentage. You could also shut down the serial interface on the far end of the link so that the interface goes into a down/down state. Roger, There is a perl module for cisco router configuration managment. It uses RCS support version control, editing, pulling and pushing configurations. Routing Policy
Hello, I received a project from the managment team. Please see the diagram. They want the network traffic between host A and B always cross the T1 line between R1 and R2. There is T1 line between router R1 and R2, which is inside the Internet. __ Host A |--ISP1 R1---T1-- R2 ISP2 --|-- Host B |Internet_| I have full control of router R1 and R2, host A and B, but have no control over ISP1 and ISP2. RE: CCNP and chances of finding a job
Dollard, You've got a point. I think everyone on the list would agree that nothing can buy experience. It's invaluable. But how do you expect one to get experience when your job is limited to network & desktop support with an ocassional router install? Do you expect us all to get Cisco to employ us & give us the experience? It's a catch-22. Employers only want experienced people but not willing to give potential employees with paper CCNA, CCNP, for example, a chance to get that valuable experience. It seems from my cursory investigation that a lot of the notebook PCs don't have a serial port anymore?? Or am I just not looking hard enough at the spec sheets? Many of them have a USB port. But does Cisco use USB for its console ports yet? I don't think so!? What do you all use for your PC console for a Cisco router or switch? Backup interface never comes up.
Hi, I am doing a study on DDR. On my router, I configured the bri0 interface, and it works fine. The router can place a call to the other end and traffic passes through perfectly. (It means all the isdn interface and dialer configuration are correct). My problem is, once i placed the interface as a backup for another serial interface (frame relay ), the bri0 is placed in standby mode automatically and even the layer 1 and layer 2 for the bri0 are administratively shutdown automatically. I tried to shutdown the primary frame relay interface and the backup bri0 never comes up. I tried it on different routers with the same result. Is this behavior normal or I missed something? Thank you very much for advice. Jim. Re: Cat 1900 and Full Duplex
Nevermind, I've discovered the answer. There used to be a model 1900C that is half duplex only. That is the model most prevalent at our location. That model is no longer available. The 1900 series now consists of the 1912 and 1924, both of which can do full duplex on their 10 meg ports. It turns out that we have two of those, so I verified visually that the duplex options is, in fact, in the port configuration section on the 1924 model. > Cisco's website documentation says that full duplex operation is available > on all ethernet and fastethernet ports. RE: newbie purchase
The two port serial network processor module has a different port than the 60 pin molex that you see on most newer routers. The cables are available. >From specialty cable vendors (such as LoDanWest) if not from Cisco. The Cisco part number for a V.35 DTE is CAB-NPV35TV2 and for a V.35 DCE is CAB-NPV35CV2. In a lab scenario you most likely will be connecting to a 2500 series that does use the 60 pin serial ports. You have several choices on how to make that connection. (a) Buy Cisco cables. One for the 4500 and one for the 2500. One will be DTE. The other DCE. The resulting cable is 20' long. (b) Buy a specialty back to back cable. What you propose is do-able. You will most likely pay a little more for the odd cables. If you have additional budget, consider buying a four port serial module instead of the two port. I've seen them on eBay in the $600-700 range. It uses the 60 pin connectors. That will be your Frame Relay switch among other things. RE: ISDN caller ID
It is possible however not in the same way that IP address spoofing is. ISDN/PSTN calls use out of band signalling to establish communications. This means that there are totally seperate networks for actual voice traffic and call signalling. The signalling network utilizes the System Signalling 7 (SS7) protocol suite. It is in the signalling network where caller ID information is transmitted specifically in the ISDN User Part Initial Address Message (ISUP IAM) which is sent to initiate a call accross the SS7 network. To answer your question, though I don't know exactly how one would go upon manipulating the caller ID information contained in an ISUP IAM, it is certainly possible to hack SS7. You would need access to a Signalling Point (SP SS7 connection, usually a PBX) as this is where the SS7 network is terminated, not at the local loop. I haven't seen a Laptop without a serial port of some kind yet, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. My company just got me a new Toshiba 2180CDT and it has one. This is hard to quantify, if, you've taken the complete journey, you probably won't have a great deal of recollection. Nevertheless, I'll take a stab: Starting with not much experience but a good aptitude, I'd say that CCNP requires 10 times the effort of CCNA, while CCIE will ask about 10 times the effort of the CCNP. RE: Working it too hard?
Your DHCP requests are only going to be processed during startup. All the router is going to do is handle a helper address, which means when a station boots up it will send a broadcast asking for an IP. The router sees the request and forwards the packet on as a unicast message. There is no real impact on router performance for such a small task. Beware the idiot users though who insist on shutting down their machine each time something happens. 75 idiots can bring down any network. And remember all our jobs would be real easy if only we could get rid of the users. Re: CCNP and chances of finding a job
the biggest problem I have, is finding a job where I can gain experience with cisco routers. I have had 3 prior jobs dealing with PC's and internet tech support but it's pretty tough to get my foot in the door with just a CCNA. My goal here is to just be able to get a job, and what I'm wondering is if a CCNP will land me one, because it seems like the ccna wont really help much here. Not necessarily one that will pay me a good lump but one where I can at least start to get some experience with routers. currently I only have a 2501 here at home that my parents got for me. - Original Message - From: "Dollard Morgan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "'K Sacca'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, May 25, 2000 2:24 AM Subject: RE: CCNP and chances of finding a job Ken, WOW, congrats for that :) (thats the ken at cisco) the other ken, yammy, im sorry before hand, but im going to have to flame you before you do something stupid. CDP for NT ?
Hi, Anyone out there know if I can get a copy of "sh cdp" for NT/98 etc ? I wouldn't mind one for my Laptop as it would save me currently trundling around with a 2924 under my arm. If your wondering, the Network I am working on has been going through Mergers and Aquisitions left, right and centre. So the topology/logical info that is documented is a little ropey. Cheers, Phil. RE: notebook PC as console
Hi Priscilla, If the notebook does not have any serial ports (9-pin-male or 25-pin-mail) you can get a usb-to-serial converter. I do not know wheither you can get Cisco USB console cables, but it might be worth a search. A USB to 25-pin Serial can be found here: Goto http://www.provantage.com and search for DLNK13U - they have 1 in stock!!! Re: CCNP and chances of finding a job
Well, what I am trying to do is get more theory doing the CCNP to have chances to get a job like K Sacca described. I also got a phone interview and I was successfull. During the face-to-face interview with 7 persons I failed: most of questions were beyond CCNA level, and I think that I could make it if I had achieved the CCNP knowledge. Of course a degree and client-server experience and hands-on in the labs would be an asset a job like that. What should I ask for?
Hey Group, Sorry for this not being a very technical question. I was just wondering what I'm worth. I have been doing Network/Deskside support for 2 years now and I just recently acheived my CCNA. I had heard, when I first started studying for Cisco Certs, that the average CCNA can start out aroung 55-65k. I am currently making around 40k and when a company asks me what I'm looking for I don't want to cheat myself by giving a lower number than they expected. Then again I don't want to give them too outrageous of a number and lose my chance. Aftre all, I do understand that I am entry when it comes to CCNA and would even be happy with 45k. Any idea's would be appreciated. oh, yet another spell checking maniac. im sorry, in the posting requirements for this site, no one ever mentioned spell checking as being required. dont mistake a typo for a spell check as well. and instead of talking about me being arrogant (which i am not) , prove to me that it isnt stupid. rip by default, since it wasnt specified, is V1, therefor no VLSM used, and since ospf does use it, it stands to reason it would be used, since it is on most networks today, so that means rip is gona find discontiguous networks left and right, great for the waste of your routers processing time. and your gona get rip chatting on your network for no reason, plus the endless routes unreachable you will get since rip's max distance for a reachable host is 15, add to that the fact that you might have nt stations or unix listening passively for rip updates to learn their gateway from, YES, IT IS STUPID! either prove me wrong, and flame at will, or keep your opinion about my personal characteristics to yourself. it wasnt meant as a personal insult to any1, it was more meant to in the nature of a little laugh. seriously, give me one good reason, why youd run both ospf and rip on the same networks, and the same routers. not talking about an asbr > -Message d'origine- > De: Richard Holland [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Date: jeudi 25 mai 2000 16:41 > À:Dollard Morgan; [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Objet:Re: Interview Question - OSPF > > > hmm, > > I find it's a bad idea to call somebody stupid. RE: CCNP and chances of finding a job
There are three types of IT people: those with certs and no experience; those with both; those without certs but with experience. Obviously those with both will command the most responsibility and money; those with experience/no certs will command a little less; and those with just certs will command even less. Are you the kind of person that believes you should be paid well for your certifications? Or are you a person who understands that "everyone must pay their dues?" A CCNP/no experience probably won't start at entry level but will be close. A CCNA/no experience will be entry level. Either way, if you apply yourself, you'll advance quickly (more quickly if you're a CCNP first). What it's going to boil down to is, your girlfriend is right (in my opinion): you should start as soon as you can gaining experience. Experience only makes the certifications easier and job prospects brighter. Now if YOU have a problem being known as entry-level (and some people without experience do sometimes think they should get paid as well as those with experience), then that's a personal issue you must deal with. And that'll make your goals much harder to accomplish. -Original Message- From: ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, May 24, 2000 2:19 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: CCNP and chances of finding a job What are the chances of a CCNP finding a job without prior work experience with routers and such?
