If you dont have a fast ethernet interface you will have to use a one-to-one
ratio of vlans to ethernet interfaces on your router i believe.

i think he said config. that goes to nvram
not ios if he didn't have enough room to load two images he could erase the
old. that goes to flash
i believe there is a difference
every time the router recycles the image loads but probaly all his config
changes go away (i.e. ip addr)
I think you may have some bad memory spence

I think he is talking about the config (i.e. ip addr). That resides in =
nvram
Not the image (i.e. 10.3) which is in flash.
there is a difference.
I f you didnt have enough room you could erase the old image. Why would =
you want the old image anyway.
I think you should check the nvram it may be bad Spence
Don

It might not save due to lack of mem. Make sure you have enough room to =
hold
both the current IOS as well as the one your trying to upgrade. =
Otherwise
you will need to delete one of them first. Being that your on IOS 10.3 =
tells
me that probably you don't have enough memory.

And I see your title." LAN Engineer". I'm not picking on you, but it
just seems that for the question you just asked, its not one that =
someone
would ask in your position. This goes back to the paper cert thing

you may want to volunteer at a more traditional agency.
like the red cross or local library or college or hospital.
these use IT and you may get some experience working on their
networks/computers while you answer phones or something.
just don't be too aggressive if they have paid staff doing this.
take it slow make friends and prove yourself.
after a year you should be running the place

Re: Cisco Certs Becoming Paper CCXX

2001-03-20 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

ccna is a major accomplishment,
it teaches things like the
OSI
IP addressing/protocol
LAN/WAN concepts
IPX Protocol
bridging and switching concepts
routing concepts
all of which are not cisco specific

router ios configuration
router management
access lists
maybe queueing too
don't remember been a paper too long to remember if queueing is on the ccna
but i know it is on bcran just papered that last year
these, which are cisco specific
sounds like alot.
oh by the way most colleges will articulate a certification into some credit
hours. if you fight hard enough.
but that is just paper as was eloquently stated previously.

by the way my employer puts much value on certification almost as much as a
degree.
reason being i graduated HS in 80 college in 85 how relevant is that
compared to today's technology,
but my first cert is from 96 and my last is from 2000 with something to fall
in 2001 much more relevant
that is good enough for me.

If you have a CCNA v1 you will be a CCNA until your recert comes up in 2 or
3 years from the date you certified.
if you are a CCNA v1 and you go and acquire a CCNP (either all v1, all v2 or
a mix) you will be a CCNP v1 and your CCNA and CCNP certification will be
active until your recert comes up in 3 years. At that point you will have
to recert to keep your certification, I have not heard if you will still be
called a CCNA v1 or what.

Yeah but the transcenders are new and unproven, expensive, and
only cover ccna. Here we are late in 2000 and all they can come up with is one
ccna test. Makes me wonder about their writing staff. And as far as typo's maybe

Re: garbage in hperterminal ?

2000-11-29 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

I had the same problem with a 1600. Did you recently upgrade the flash.
If so that may be the problem.
I loaded an image with ip/ipx/at/appn and the image was to big for for the
amount of ram I had, I had 12mb and the image needs 16. There was not enough
memory for the console. I could telnet in and the router still routed. This
was a case that was resolved by cisco officially and that was their story.
Funny aint it that the flash will hold the image but the memory wont support
it.

Click on the  Q1  Directly from Cisco at the Learning Store.

I recommend using this for the ISBNs only and a pretty
complete list of titles, some are missing. Shop the web with the isbn for the
best price though unless you like paying full price for something besides

Re: O/T ballots-per-second musings

2000-12-01 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

I disagree with you william, an off topic discussion is a welcome change
from the routine questions on testing software, books, where do I find?...
and I think that was a good question anyway what IS the bps, well it was
connection oriented trasmission, ton of overhead, and some latency for
refueling, but i heard on NPR they were above the cir doing about 75 in a 70
mile/h zone.
That said, I have been on this site for about 4 months and enjoy all the
different personalities. If we were all at a party and just hanging out we
wouldn't want to listen to the same questions. I think the technical term
for that is dribble. I know what you are going to say, this is a site
dedicated to cisco certification and support and that is correct, but we are
all different people with different personalities, and since we all come
here every day shouldn't the regulars get to know each other. Another line
of reasoning is, all three of the names in this send (you, chuck, pris) have
contributed much lucent and accurate information on various topics, I feel
that gives some topic freedom. It is not the ranting of a guy who wants to
know what is a good book for CCNA studies.
There was a question the other day on "Is there anything after CCIE
comparable to achieve". What are your goals, maybe seeing a movie, taking a
bowling lesson, sanding wood, collecting seashells, I swear I could open a
clinic for CED (certification egress disorder) and make a fortune. have a
little sylvan prometric in the back, just to play both ends while you are
recovering. :>)
Disclaimer: This is not a comprehensive list of accurate and lucent
regulars, so if you aren't mentioned please don't take offense, you know who
you are.

I don't believe tftp allows directory browsing. You would have to set the

Re: What to know, all night long . . .

2000-12-18 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

If you are talking about BSCN then there is nothing on the CCNA v2.0 test
that is absolutely necessary. All of the new switching concepts and
configurations are covered in more detail in the BCMSN the switching test
for CCNP. The first test I took was the BCMSN so I covered it. Cisco moved
alot of their test objectives from one test to another going from CCNP v1 to
v2 but if you have a good general understanding of networking you will be
fine. An example of this would be queueing was moved from ACRC v1 to BCRAN
v2. Either way you cover the topic of queueing cause it is still around, but
the body of each individual test has changed. In my opinion CCNA v1 is
enough foundation to take on any CCNP exam first except maybe CIT unless you
have a fair amount of real-world troubleshooting then go for it.
Here was my order if it helps:
CCNA v1
BCMSN
CIT
BCRAN
DCN
CID 3.0
BSCN
CCIE written sometime before 3/01
CCIE lab sometime before 3/02
any combo gets you there, but this made most sense considering the work I
do.

seperate designation. Seems like what ever is hot cisco puts in the R&S
cert. I don't think that Layer 1 and 2 should be a big part of the R&S
except for general connection requirements. That should also be a
designation.
There sould be at least 10-12 maybe 15 designations not just 5.
The wider in scope the subject matter the less of an expert you become so I
feel that adding too many topics to a designation dilutes its impact.

ccie lab

2001-01-03 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

I don't see a problem with the lab being so booked.
So many people taking the exam and the number of ccie's being so low. Is a
good thing. If someone qualifies and feels they are ready let them go. You
should schedule your lab at the next available time and go take it. If you
fail then tell me how long would you want to wait. Myself I will schedule
the next available time and take it again until I pass. Most great battles
have been won by attrition, since Moses to CCIE.
Duck

I certainly agree with all the points Chuck made. One thing that Cisco could
do is
change the requirements to take the lab besides just passing the written
exam. I am not
saying by any account that the written is easy, but I know people that have
passed it by
pure luck and really don't know a darn thing. I know a person right now that
has passed
the written by getting the passing score on the dime, and he is taking the
lab soon. I
wish good luck to him, however he is walking in blindly with out EVER
actually
configured a router. He has no internetworking design or troubleshooting
experience in
the real world, however he is going to go and take the lab exam just to "see
what it is
like"

I don't think Chuck's ideas are cruel and unusual. I think they really need
to make this
tougher then it already is. Who wants to put "CCIE #102,000" after their
name? If they
just open more racks it may get to that point. I believe the written exam
should be
scratched with a new format with a higher passing score. Truly the money
issue sometimes
makes little difference. If someone has 30,000 grand to spend on equipment,
classes,
books etc., a few more grand can't hurt. And if their company is paying then
who cares
right? I know a company that has spent countless dollars actually flying a
guy to
Canada, putting him up in a hotel...and paying for his labthey did this
5 times
before he passed his lab. Those slots could have been used for someone that
actually
knew what they were doing and had a chance to pass. It would be nice if
they had a 4
hour lab prequal after taking the written. Something that would not require
a proctor to
pass. You would be given many different scenarios at Sylvan and require to
configure
them with a virtual IOS. The configs would be sent to an evaluator at Cisco
and then you
would be contacted a week later concerning scheduling your real lab date.
This could
weed out some of the flunkies.

If Cisco ruins the value of this exam, they are not going to have any future
revenue
from it.

if you are looking for an entry level job i would dumb down your resume

Re: Disappointed with CCNP --Original poster - Should be our poster child

2001-01-11 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

I started in this industry in 95 after a career change, I was a Chef for 12
years, and taught music for two years before that. Third career working with
computers. I want to be a lawyer next, fourth career. Whatever!! A friend of
mine had a family member who had a small consulting business, and I started
working with them when they needed a grunt. It was during the Win95 buzz
when people would pay for you to upgrade their OS. They used to get 179$ to
upgrade a computer with a licensed copy of Win95. Unbelievable!!! The
consultant company also did a lot of rewiring too, used to be a lot of Cat3
in those walls. So we would install Cat5. I swallowed a lot of dust bunnies
in the day. Got paid 7$ an hour but it was a start, and I would do it all
again because like you, I (and many here) love it. Now I have a great
position and great pay, the best part is, it's like I don't have a job, but
am getting paid for my hobby. So good luck Jeongwoo you will find something,
I know how you feel I was there. With the attitude you expressed in your
last post, you should be the poster child for all that is good about this
group, and certification, and this profession.

Re: cisco switches

2000-09-13 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

Oh yeah I just remebered I got a 934 on that switching test my finger got
stuck. I'll scan it and post if anyone doubts it.
I know there was a chuckle there, bordered on belly roll.
Bingo priscilla if you know what vlans are and multicasting is a STP is HSRP
is
My mother says: Donald time for dinner
My brother says: yo duck lets eat
My father says: Buddy-Boy don't make me call you again!!
either way i get my belly full cause I understand that concept of dinner.
all those commands work.
what do you think i,m brain dead i wouldn't tell anybody if I got a 347. I'm
not going in there with a Jedi send in a droid.
Pricsilla thanks for coming to the defense of all those that turn it on and
make it work. Looking forward to reading your work, it is on my reading list
and about fourth in the queue. Working on Doyle right now. I'd shoot you a
resume but I got a good ride right now.
I apoligize to the group but I don't think cisco even cares which runs on
which, that's just extraneous stuff that you read in study guides.
If the test is truly adaptive I'd give a question like that a one, and a
question about routing between VLANS or configuring a router for a
dense-mode network a tad higher in the score count.

See what I'm talking about. You don't get 300 points. That attitude is not
the good attitude Neil. I was joking you guys are serious you think you get
300 points. No. That is just a scale in the adaptive testing format. You
mean to tell me if you answer 1 question right get a 333 you are 1/3 of the
way to a 1000. Novell pioneered the adaptive testing technique, you people
should read that to get a clear understanding on adaptive testing.

This is not a flame.
I think we all learned something.
I tried to show someone not what to learn but how to learn. granted I used a
little humor and hyperbole but some people got what I was saying.
it is important to memorize indiviual stats like which switch runs IOS, but
i think it is more important to tell people that what ever the command set
if you know what the thingie can do you will be all right.
Now ain't that better than asking which switch runs IOS any study guide will
tell you that. That ain't learning that is memorizing.
I personally started one of those strings and I don't feel like I was being
flamed we was just funning we all love each other group hug!!

This is used to set a default gateway

This is used to define a static default network. It is used in tandem with
the ip route command
ex.
ip route 15.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 20.20.20.1
ip default-network 15.0.0.0
now instead of sending traffic to an interface you are sending traffic to a
network this would be used to direct traffic along a certain path
this is used when you can't get individual subnets into a routing table such
as with rip. a packet with an address for the 15.15.0.0 255.255.0.0 subnet
would use this route because 15.0.0.0 would be the longest match in the
table. once it reaches the 15.0.0.0 network it could be routed because an
interface knows its subnet
>
> ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 x.x.x.x - this would be the interface to use
This sets up a default route because it would be the longest match and any
traffic not matched in the routing table would use this.

Re: Report - Global Knowlege BGP class Training nightmare

2000-09-19 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

I agree totally, that instructor should have his feet held to the fire.
I just had a bad experience at some training and I hit the roof. The course
outline was not followed and the portions I really needed were just glossed
over because of time restraints and instructor stupidity. The worst part was
that the organization giving the training had internal people in the class.
It was supposed to be a network boot camp to support a Digital TV headend
which included the OSI, TCP/IP, Cisco routers, Unix Administration, and ATM,
all of which are used to support a Digital headend. Of course these recent
collage grads just hired by this organization had no clue so we spent three
days going over the OSI and IP addressing AGAIN A. Best
part the instructor was dead wrong about some major things but was unwilling
to budge when reasoned with. He said that physical addressing does not
happen at the Data-link layer and then used Frame as an example but then
said the data-link handled error-correction and I said not frame-relay, he
didn't get what I was trying to say. I believe on an Ethernet network
physical addressing happens at the data-link layer. I don't think he
understood the concept of the OSI. It is just a MODEL. So this is how it
went for three days, which in the course outline said was to be about 1 and
1/4 days to end at 10:30 am of the second day, not 8 am of the forth day.
Instead of showing us where the app's loaded and how to configure them for
the system and what processes are loaded and why and when they should be
stopped and where the logs were and what they mean, all good stuff for a
Unix admin supporting the DTV platform, the Unix training consisted of CD,
LS and VI again!!AHH what a moron!!!
I've seen better sales presentations of ATM than his training, unbelievable.
The best part was that I was the only outside customer there and I came with
a solid data background, the internal people, it was the first time through
and they lapped it up like puppies. Nobody talked to me during break cause
they thought I was the bad guy because I could only sit there quietly so
long before I had to call him on his huge errors. Oh another big one was
that he said that OSPF uses STP algorithm and there is a root router. I
tried to reason with him that, that would defeat the purpose of the SPF part
if all routers had to check in with a root, no all routers run their own SPF
tree with themselves as root. I think he was confused with a DR, nothing to
do with each routers path selection just a way of managing the topology
database on multiple access networks (ie. Ethernet). When I tried to explain
this I thought his head was going to pop. Enough for now Thanks for the vent
space. My company paid for this training but I view it as though it is my
money, that is why I have such a good ride here.

Re: CCIE Questions...

2000-09-19 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

Wrong again john some of us beleive in the certification process. We work
hard to acheive the cert and don't want the process tainted more than it is.
Seems to me the only people that don't care about the nda ARE THE PAPER
TYPES and the ones who have no experience in networking but think they
should get a job because they remembered some facts. Thats what we like
about the ccie program, no pretenders just the lab and those standing. when
i pass it will be because I qualified, me "Donald B Johnson Jr" not because
I broke the nda.
hey here is a good question
Any CCIE that passed the lab without any hands on experience please tell us
how you did it not what was on the test?
And actually we did not initiate the certification process we inherited it.
I think from the boy scouts, you know all those badges. god I loved that
handbook.

You got to be tight on HSRP, multicasting, multilayer switching, bridging
and vlans know campus design, switch architecture, cablining and modules
have taken a back seat to more relevant info.
Know campus design too!!! which switch goes where.
Earl - deals with addresses
Saint - manages ethernet
Sage manages other
Samba - manages the bus
Pheonix - manages the backplane on cat 5 1.2 gb x 3 equals 3.6 gbits
backplane
that is all the architecture you need.

Well the past couple weeks have been fun but
reading through over 100 emails a day is too much.  I thought this list
might have helped me along but mostly it just wasted valuable time.
There is never a shortage of stupid questions and people that don't know how
to read the archives to get 80% of the questions answered.  If I have to
read one more question asking what book to read for the CCNA or some other
  test I'm gonna be sick.

In the span of 6 days I read all the books and
passed the pathetic CCNP.  What a joke that test was.  For those of
you that asked me about the Foundation test it was terribly easy.
Anyone that even reads the material and half understands it will pass.

As far as the whiners, snitches, and morons you
know what I think of you.  People like you allow me to command a
higher and higher rate every few months cause no one wants to work with
someone like that.  Keep it up.  I even had one crybaby by the name
of Louie Belt tell me he was going to have me removed from this list and have
my hotmail account terminated.  LOL.  Apparently he thought he was
so influential that he had the power to terminate my accounts just cause I
called him a name.  :)  Nice try.

For those that I've had positive interaction with
feel free to email me if you have questions or want to chat.

you could by a linksys dsl/cable modem router that has 4
ethernet ports, about $150. if you put a hub behind it you can do up to 254

I ordered an IDSL line for my house and the ISP tells me that
I will receive a Copper Mountain bridge (router not available for residential
service).  Does anybody know what possible bad things could happen if I
quietly remove the bridge and replace it with, say, a Cisco 804?  I sure
would like to use the 804, but since one of the interfaces is IDSL, I can't
leave the bridge inline and there are no "low" cost (~$400) options for dual
  Ethernet interface Cisco routers.
If this is a bad idea, please tell me your thoughts via direct
email.  I know very little about xDSL, so any help is
  appreciated!

No, 2 router ports cannot be on the same subnet.  You
can, however, setup HSRP (Hot-Standby Router Protocol), which will give you
the redundancy you need.  This requires 2 routers but gives you
complete router redundancy and not just port/link redundancy.  Search
for HSRP on www.cisco.com.

Re: CCNP CERT !!

2000-10-13 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

Actually studying, preparing, and taking a certification examination is a
great expreience both professionally and personally. Unless you have
extensive experience working in the field you should take your time really
learning each subject. Anyone that learns the body of skills that are needed
for say the BCMSN test in three days, unless you are working with the
technology you will forget most info in about three days after the test.
They may remember to how to issue a sh vlan command but probally not much
good in a large multicast campus environment. If you have a lot of
experience bang it out, if you are new or learning take your time and enjoy.
Nobody would brag about about a 25 minute ski trip to Vail or a 3 minute
love, well lets not go there.

I don't think that anyone should be thrown off the list for how they feel.
If you read what is stated it makes sense, I would add, that if you can't
find something on the net you probaly ain't CCIE material. But here is a
hint on that free site, it is a little out of the way site called

Paul,

I personally am offended with this kind of abusive post and I suspect
others are too. My vote is to please remove this person from the list.

Re: Has anyone used Boson's CCIE Written Exam Prep?

I would not recommend the BFQ a total rip off in my mind.
I have used Boson in the past for other exams and found them excellent. They
usually reference a cisco press book or the cisco link for there questions.
An excelent feature. Have not used the CCIE software but if their past track
record is an indication well worth the bucks.

2000-10-16 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

Ton of errors objectives not clearly covered an example the bcmsn objective
clearly states that there is no atm but the test goes on and on with ATM
lane questions.
Also there must have been 20 questions on switch architecture saintsage and
all that, not even on the test.
HSRP and multicasting, mls, not even mentioned.
This doesn't even count the typo's and out right mistakes.
But the worst of all is the poor explanations and all questions point to the
Cisco Internetwotrking Technology Overview web page and the glossary on the
Web site.
Example of resources

ATM lane uses one LECS per ELAN

Re: Summarization

2000-10-20 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

Sorry for the html but I thought color would allow you to
visualize.
22 would be the answer. A 0 is still a bit so they would
be common. ( red is the same - black is not) if you used a /12 that would be a
major aggregate and you would loose a lot of address space.
a /22 would be a good answer for advertising out of an area a
/12 would be better suited for an Autonomous system
all this red is common all the black is different looks like a
/22 to me.
> 172.16.1.0 in bin -- 10110110.0001.0001.> 172.16.2.0 in bin-->10110110.0001.0010.> 172.16.3.0 in bin-->10110110.0001.0011.

if you used a /12 you would lose all this address space
(marked in green) that you could use elsewhere.
all the red is common all the green and black combined is
different but you could lengthen the mask to make better use of vlsm.

> 172.16.1.0 in bin --
10110110.0001.0001.> 172.16.2.0 in bin-->10110110.0001.0010.> 172.16.3.0 in bin-->10110110.0001.0011.
So the real answer is they will both work but what do you want
to advertise to and will you need the address space

Then after this blather you make the brilliant statement this is what the

You were playing with the network and you brought down the firewall and you
want to check somebody elses credentials.
Or maybe there is a valid reason to ping a large number of hosts

Re: VLSM Problem

2000-10-24 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

Ted you cant troubleshoot vlsm without configs.
Some things to remember are subnets are different networks, and need a
router.
VLSM is just a way to effectively use available address space. But they are
still subnets and need to be routed.
1. Find out if you can ping local addresses.
2. Find out if you can ping remote addresses and which ones.
2a. Routes have to be coming and going.
3. Also which type of routes do you have. Static/Default/Dynamic
4. Which type of routing protocols are you using. Distance Vector won't
work.
5. What do you care! If you are just the "Server Guy" if your services are
running then your done. Let the "Networking Guy" figure it out.
You ain't getting paid to do it. We on the list are not getting paid to
trouble shoot major VLSM problems either. This is more a group study/help
site.

Re: Online training

2000-10-25 Thread Donald B Johnson Jr

Well as someone that has taught along as engineered I couldn't agree more.
If you understand the theory you will easily implement commands.
Keep this in mind though without detailed debug and show commands it is a
long way to acheive cert. Example. It is one thing to know the theory of how
the routing table gets populated but is another thing when you start to have
static/dynamic routes redistribution and then a route goes down what happens
next. You better have a grounded knowledge of sh debug commands.
