Hi,

I have two questions:

1 Can we expect to see a rollback to a single httpdconf file in the
future? The current setup when this config file is splitted all over the
place is very annoying to me

2 I wonder why nobody has contributed with a httpd 2x rpm yet, is
there any reasons not to?

At the time I thought it was another new kernel bug, but it now occurs
on all tested kernels (see the above thread URL) so this indicates to me
that it may be a bug in KDE itself, or the bug was fixed in early 2.4.17
 mdk but broken again later.

Again, anyone know if I can get the kernel RPM's from early 2.4.17 patch
levels to properly test this and the reboot hang bug?

 Thanks again,

Oops, I forgot to mention the actual symptom.

The battery indicator always displays either fully charged or 99%
charged. It knows that the AC power is plugged in and displays the
right icon of power or battery, but when running on battery power the
indicator does not decrease.

 1. Is there a way to leave the same background on the other consoles?

Not that I know about (at least not easily, but it must be possible either
with some bootsplash kernel code modification, or mingetty replacement)

 2. Can I configure the text color anywhere?

As far as I can see in the bootsplash kernel patch, the text color is
not configurable, but this could certainly be changed, not for 8.2,

This email is subject to the disclaimer set out below

This is probably slightly off topic for this particular thread which is
addressing PCMCIA LAN card issues, but please don't forget that the
various experienced laptop problems do not just relate to LAN cards, nor
are they consistent across laptops ! I can insert and remove my two
PCMCIA LAN cards all day, but touching the modem results, not in a
reboot, but a complete system lockup. The same applies to removing or
inserting the power cable and trying to resume from either Suspend to
RAM or Suspend to Disk. I think there are more fundamental problems
surrounding the later kernels and laptops in general. Getting it to work
for one model by modifying pci.agent will surely leave the rest of the
laptop users exactly where they are now ?

I inserted the card and while on console F12 and
watched the messages. Since networking was not enabled
at the time eth0 was not brought up. However it still
 crashed and rebooted upon suspend/resume.

I have just about eliminated everything I could... so
it may be down to something in pci.agent. The only
thing I have been able to do so far to keep it from
not crashing is to disable pci.agent but that also
prevents it from being recognized, so I don't know how
 much help that is.

I feel we are fairly close to resolving this
problem... if anyone has some ideas on how I can
research this better I am open.

There is a difference that might be of some help
If I have inserted the pcmcia lan card before suspend,
then the system locks up and reboots shortly after
XFree comes back up. However, if the pcmcia lan card
is inserted after a successful suspend/resume then
there is about a 1-2 minute delay between resume and
the crash and reboot. By this time all processes
 associated with pci.agent, net.agent and resume.d have
been run and there is an extended quite time (on the
logs) before the crash and reboot.
 Hopefully this helps some.

I have narrowed it down a bit. I have linked it to
either the network card, or more likely networking
  in
general. I have discovered that if I do not load my
pcmcia lan card (I tried 2 different brands), then I
do not run into the instability problem. I even had
  a
modem in as a test (but did not run networking
  through
  it.)

However, even long after I had suspended/resumed, if
  I
pop the lan card in, after about a minute the system
will crash and reboot itself. During this time I
watched the log on console F12. net.agent does its
thing successfully and the network is brought up.
  Then
I wait, and sure enough after a minute or two the
computer crashes and reboots. There were no log
messages that happened on Console F12 after
  net.agent.
The crash happened about a minute after the last log
  message.

Is there some kind of trace I can run so that I can
watch what is happening right before I get to the
  point where it crashes?

Nor do I,
but, and there's always a but, if you compare mandrake to the other
distros ,ie redhat, Suse, (no personal experiance of slackware and
debian) at the moment the install is easier and less likely to fail
Redhat dos'nt always detect the users harwdware, and suse's is a pain in
the butt to install, keep changing the cd's every few mins !
Mandrake is not usually the first OS a newbie will try, its often the've
tried redhat, screwed up the install, cant get something to run and end

Its at this point if some developer keeps putting his/her personal

So everyone loses !

less users , more attitude by the major s/w players that its not worth

This is probably slightly off topic for this
 particular thread which is
addressing PCMCIA LAN card issues, but please don't
 forget that the
various experienced laptop problems do not just
 relate to LAN cards,nor
are they consistent across laptops ! I can insert
 and remove my two
 PCMCIA LAN cards all day
so can I, I only run across this problem after a
suspend/resume. Power management is a pretty important
thing for a laptop though most defaults in the
bios has the system suspend when the system has not
been used for a while, so losing all of your work
because you had to make a pit stop is not a way to
create happy users. :-{

, but touching the modem
 results, not in a
reboot, but a complete system lockup. The same
I can also verify this. I have not researched it since
I do my networking over a lan most of the time. This
does seem to be a kernel related issue at first glance
though...I got a kernel oops. I think I even took a
picture of it and relayed some of the info back to
this mailing list.

 applies to removing or
inserting the power cable and trying to resume from
 either Suspend to
 RAM or Suspend to Disk.
I believe that this problem has been resolved with the
latest kernel (thanks to the fine work of Juan
Quintela.) You simply add append=noapic to the kernel
in lilo.conf (search the archives for a more in depth
description and instructions). I also believe that
Juan may be trying to set it up so that during initial
install it will recognize certain laptops
automatically and apply the noapic to those in
question. I have sent him some id info on my Dell
Inspiron 8000, if this resolution also works for you
and you have a different laptop, I highly encourage
you to also send him the info again check the
archives for more info.

 I think there are more
 fundamental problems
surrounding the later kernels and laptops in
 general. Getting it to work
for one model by modifying pci.agent will surely
 leave the rest of the
laptop users exactly where they are now ?
Not necessarily, if it is a pci.agent issue, I suspect
that a little clean-up of the code should help quite a
few people. Whatever is causing this crash can not be
beneficial to keep in there. Also, Dell is a major
player, so there are many benefits to getting these
basic things to work properly out of the box. Mandrake
is trying to cater to average users, I know that I
could not install mandrake on our office laptops if
something as basic as suspending can cause the system
to reboot.

I inserted the card and while on console F12 and

 still

I have just about eliminated everything I could...

it may be down to something in pci.agent. The only

I feel we are fairly close to resolving this
problem... if anyone has some ideas on how I can
research this better I am open.

There is a difference that might be of some
 help
If I have inserted the pcmcia lan card before
 suspend,
then the system locks up and reboots shortly after
XFree comes back up. However, if the pcmcia lan
 card
is inserted after a successful suspend/resume then
there is about a 1-2 minute delay between resume
 and
the crash and reboot. By this time all processes
  associated with pci.agent, net.agent and resume.d
 have
been run and there is an extended quite time (on
 the
logs) before the crash and reboot.
  Hopefully this helps some.

In this kind of situation, download the md5sums files in the same
directory as the ISOs, and use the md5sum utility to check that the
ISO you've downloaded are correct bit for bit

Then: if the md5sums correspond, it's your burner/system fault if they
can't burn it, and you'll save time and bandwitdh avoiding a useless
transfer again Just burn it at a lower speed and/or with simulated
burning

If the md5sums are wrong, the problem was in the transfer
and/or is in the mirror You may then want to report the problem to the
ftp server maintainer

I experience the same problem VESA BIOSes tend to default to 60Hz
refresh rates for any resolution AFAIK there is no option to change
this directly from linux But there are two possible alternatives
You can use accelerated fb driver specific to your video card (if such
driver exists in kernel) You should be able to set yuor timings to
whatever you want then It's cool if you set up exactly the same
timings for both X and console which allows switching from text to X
and back w/o monitor voltage chandes and blanks
If your card is not supported you may try to find some dos utilities for
your card that allow you to set up refresh rates For example, both my
card and monitor claim to support DDC and there is a dos program shipped
with the card which is supposed to adjust video mode timings for DDC
monitors If such program works for you, you may set up a small dos
partition where you put this program with your kernels and boot using

I have the same problem on a local hard drive. I use mp3s. It
segfaults on many different mp3 files. I realized that it
doesn't always happen after the third load, it happens at various
times, from the 2nd load to the 10th load.

What output plugin are you using? E.g. normal OSS, artsd,.. ?

OSS. 1.2.7pre1, I think I got it from your web page.

Wait... does it only segfault with 1.2.7pre1 or also with 1.2.6

other sound apps have any problems. mp3blaster runs for hours. It
kinda seemed like just the GUI that was locking up, so I tried exporting
it's display to another machine, and just hiding the main window. No

I've compilied 3 different older versions of xmms using gcc-2.95.3,
2.96, and even 3.0.3. Still no love. I might try installing 8.1 and
 see if it still happens.

Can you try to rebuild disabling the compiler optimizations?

The two machines are running *identical* up-to-date cooker, but they are
totally different hardware. I can't figure out if it's a hardware
issue, kernel, glibc, oss drivers, or even an X problem. Any ideas anyone?

I passed to the hardware team asking them to test on the P4 they

Fair enough. Perhaps the installer could warn when the display parameter

It just tries to honour it without handling potential errors.

Now, it quits with a Could not open display ... message, which might leave
a user confused as to why the display couldn't be opened.

We can't gracefully handle errors in stage1, diskspace is a

[Cooker] gurpmi and deps location

2002-03-05 Thread Bill Greenwood

Is it possible to *simply* make gurpmi look first in the directory that
you may be in, for deps for a given file you are trying to install

In other words, I don't want to have to go into rpmdrake to setup my
directory locations for gurpmi to have to find deps that are right there
in the directory I'm already in

For example: I wanted to install gpr I changed directory into my RPMS
directory I typed in gurpmi gpr* and it came back that it needed to
satisfy some deps, ok to install? After clicking OK, it started to
download the deps from the Cooker site I previously had set up in
rpmdrake for updates This was stupid because the deps were already
right there in that directory

It would have been simple if gurpmi would have simply looked in the
default directory that I had started it from first Or, it could bring
up a dialog box asking if the deps are already located on your system
(if it didn't find them in the default directory that you are in), and
if yes, ask where they are located (and then remember that location to
look in if it doesn't find them in the default directory that you are in
when you run gurpmi again for another install), and if no, ask if you
want to download them

2- LVM on / is possible but currently not supported (AFAIK, drakx

i know that
and i didn't mention anything about / ( my / is normal partition )
the thing is that mkinitrd checks only for /etc/raidtab and not for
/proc/mdstat
so it doesn't add the raid modules and thats the cause for missing PV's
( raids) and VG's

after installing ( and booting ) the 2418-1mdk i had no raid and lvm
devices
and i had empty /proc/mdstat and /proc/lvm/global

I found
ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/sunsite.uio.no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrake/Mandrake-iso/i586/
to be in the ~200kbps AND one of the few to have all three iso images.

The faster we get the RPMS, the faster the turnaround on bugs/features

I'm right now downloading from sunet.se with ~100k. Also Esslingen

gcc-296 is the system compiler, thus meaning that everything was built

You are definetely in trouble if you want to mix gcc3 C++ code with gcc2

I can contribute the patches to mandrakesoft if you are interested in

rebooted after installation After running drakenet again, and cancelling

Mandrake 80 onwards in Dell latitude and know that this is supported Then
can't we get this added to the supported hardware list and drakenet

Even I had the problems with getting audio working with Xmms But after
loadeing maestro driver and letting xmms using oss driver as audio pluggin,

[Cooker] Latest Cooker install on Gateway 9150XL notebook

2002-03-05 Thread Robert Fox

Install went flawless - but then again I don't test all the install
features I simply blow away the root partition but keep the /home
partition every new install

I'm sorry to repeat myself, but there are consistent annoying problems,
little stuff - but the devil is in the details

1) Sound appears to broken again (after fresh install) - it was working
for a short period from the last few weeks ago - and works fine in 81 -
please see attached install logs for clues It's actually hit or miss
because it sometimes works, but sometimes not Funny thing is - when I
launch noatun with an MP3 file - the sound springs to life!!!

2) hostname is still messed up - which consequently throws squid off
the entry in /etc/hosts doesn't reflect the found hostname from the
DNS

3) two floppy icons for the LS-120 drive shows up on the desktop

4) The Xircom Realport Cardbus (RBEM-56G) network card still shows up in
half-duplex after the install (but during the install it is full-duplex)
I have to mention this again because in all previous Cookers (especially
81 and halfway through 82) it always worked fine

That's it - this is a great release!!

This change is to keep compatibility with Ximian GNOME.
Ximian GNOME is a popular _distribution_ of GNOME. Mandrake is also a
popular distribution of GNU/Linux. Distributions that have such
popularity should not have a granular compatibility issue IMHO, and IMHO
it does. It has gotten better on both sides over the few years, but it
 needs to get smooth IMHO.
Some people love Mandrake GNU/Linux, but they also prefer Ximian gnome.
Installation and removal of both sets of packages (libs and all) that
consist of that desktop should be a breeze, and so should building
packages that depend around those desktop packages (libs and all).
Anyway, here's the patch, nice and small : )

This is beyond my own competence so I've asked fcrozat@ who is
maintainer for all gnome stuff and he said this is needed for
rebuilding for mandrake-8.1, which I'm not really interested in..

[Cooker] DivX video

2002-03-05 Thread Michal Bukovjan

Is there anything capable of playing OpenDivX video format in Cooker /
upcoming Mandrake 8.2?

I could not find anything. I know there was a discussion about this, not
sure about conclusion.
In any case, trying to compile MPlayer now, as the XMovie package that I
could find is too old (DivX is supported from version 1.9.5 up, only 1.9
in cooker).
Is there any other app I missed that can handle that or is this just
*not yet* ?

I also found a xmms plugin for this, but it is not in cooker as well.

And I will try to have more _verbatim_ output but has it is an old
bug
reported by many I would have thought that it would be fixed now

What bug? I have just added FTP source without any problem

It may be that site is busy (as is sunsiteuiono now) I agree that not
showing error message is not nice Can you suggest how to do it given
that we may use two completely different download programs?

It may be that firewall does not allow incoming FTP DATA connections I
am not going to debug anybody's stupid firewall setup If somebody does
not know that FTP requires incoming connection it is not my problem If
you _do_ debug it and _does_ turn out FTP DATA problem - please tell so
and I look what can be done to add need passive FTP to urpmi/rpmdrake

It may be that you have proxy that needs authentication Yes, it is
currently not supported

It may be something totally unrelated In this case please, debug and
tell us what the problem is

It is development list People are expected to debug there problems and
come here with at least suggestions what has to be done to fix them not
coming here ranting and wining There are enough other places for it Or
at least report problems in such way that makes it possible to track
them down (not that I am always doing it this way myself :-)

[Cooker] samba-2.2.3a-6mdk and hung mountpoints

2002-03-05 Thread Brad Felmey

-Uvh'ing to this build is causing smb mountpoints to hang permanently
I've verified this on seven separate machines so far If a share is
mounted via smbmount, and anything happens to that mount (network drop
or whatever) during access That mountpoint hangs _forever_ It's
impossible to kill it with 'kill -9' It's as bad as NFS It used to
time out and give up after a while, and you could certainly kill it, but
this is no longer the case

Even better (worse?), any process trying to access said mountpoint when
it hung is also un-killable, even by killing the parent shell

I can't just bounce servers whenever samba gets cross to clear the hung
mountpoints and release all the fried processes Perhaps a rollback to a
stable version of samba (222 or so) is in order unless and until =
223 is stable
