Ben, I played with a couple of images. First, I added a note symbol to the Music Folder. I didn't clean it up, but was wondering what you thought of the idea. Second, I created a New Music image. I thought of those cheesy New! starbursts you see in magazines. I haven't decided how much I like the idea, but thought I'd toss out something for you to play with. As for the Power On/Off code, the Default skin provides this ability. Go to Start - Run and type: services.msc I'm not on my SlimServer computer right now, but I believe it should either be called Slim or SlimServer. Right-click on it. Either select Stop, then Start or try Restart. However the abnormal starting problem may need more troubleshooting - someone else will have to comment on that. Try to start it normally again though. [slim] OS X User Switching Problem When Installed For All Users
I'm sorry if this is discussed elsewhere, but my search didn't yield similar threads. I have SlimServer installed for all users, yet when I'm logged in as my wife the following happens: * SqueezeBox (1) shows the clock as it should * Menus seem to work to get through the index * When I hit play on a song, it seems that SlimServer can't play the song and it cycles through all in the album. * If I log-in as myself (even with her still logged in) the music starts immediately if play were pressed before. SlimServer seems to work properly from this point forward For your reference, I'm running the latest build of public 10.4.x on a G4/733 with the music library located on a secondary volume/disk, and I'm running 6.2b1 - 4687. But if you're ripping a CD, you should be ripping in FLAC anyway. Reserve MP3 ripping for portable devices. There are many more tutorials that can be found using google. Mp3tag is simple enough that no tutorial is really required. One hint though - remove ID3v1 tags and only write ID3v2 tags. Otherwise entries will be limited to 30 characters. I don't use MoodLogic so I can't help there. Regarding downloading MP3s, use Mp3tag to check and correct tags. Be consistent so that SlimServer will handle it consistently as well. Thanks to KDF and Grotus on helping me debug the two things that were giving me the most grief with the skin-- identifying radio streams when playing and getting a player chooser pull-down menu to work on every page (for those streaming to more than one player). I checked in several notable changes over the last few days. If you are using this skin for work or play, I suggest you get the new daily on Monday, or update your svn tree. -- now playing page has a custom layout when playing remote streams -- added a radio URL tune-in form on the browse radio page -- misc layout improvements -- player chooser pull-down shows up in upper-right of nav bar on all pages (when using more than one player) -- home page layout changes -- the top nav no longer has the back button, and I added a browse radio button. I was resistant to remove the back button, even though it was redundant with the Nokia's HW back key, because I'm left-handed and find those buttons fairly inconvenient for me. However, Dean @ slimdevices convinced me that using a javascript:history.back() button was problematic when interfacing with the slimserver, so away it goes. I'll just have to start learning to use that HW key I guess... There's still a lot to do, but I think the skin is in pretty darn good shape now. [slim] Re: Synchronization should use fine-grained network clock
In order to maintain sub-ms clock accuracy, ntp requires significant support from the host operating system, which the squeezeboxen may not have in place. Under linux, there is an entire kernel process devoted to system time, with a corresponding API for slewing the time in a gapless fashion to maintain a highly accurate system time (which is NOT based on the RTC, but the processor clocks while the system is running--the RTC is read/set only on system startup/shutdown). ntp may have impose too much overhead for small embedded devices; not positive though. -- mikew mikew's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3250 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19466 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The library stats also update in real time which is nice when watching a rescan to see when it will be done :) More details and the download are here: http://www.adamreeve.com/software/ Note - this is a beta and so comes with no guarantees! A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19736 Question: "gapless" crossfade type would be useful - Yes - I'd use it - No - not interested I'm not convinced that slimserver is the way to solve this problem. To understand why, understand that there are (at least) 4 sources of gaps in mp3 playback. 1. Silence in the original material (which should be left there). 2. Silence that the encoder put there (either out of a misguided sense of "needing it" or because of an idea that "padding" was harmless). In some subcases there, there are also tags attached to the file to show how much was "incorrect" silence. 3. Silence that the SB hardware imposes in a song transition. It's my understanding that this is quite small. 4. Silence that occurs because of a network problem just as the buffer for the old song runs down and the buffer hasn't started to fill yet for the new song. 5. Silence that occurs because, in a synched playback environment, all the players stop and wait for them all to partly fill their buffers before starting the next track. There may be other sources I don't know about, but let's start with these 5. Which one are you asking us to vote on? Because my answer isn't the same for all. I believe slim should work on 3-5, in order to make the hardware output as faithful to the original as possible. I don't think anyone should automatically be removing silence from (1). The problem is, it is indistinguishable from (2) without intensive scrutiny. I would agree to Slim interpreting the silence tags if the encoder put them in. But I don't think Slim should act automatically, at run time, as if it knows better. This sounds like the right place for an off-line program, that lets you listen to the tips and tails of a song and decide where the song should begin and end playback and tag the files appropriately. In fact, I'd go further and say that support should be added to SB2/3s to send them a file and a set of start and end timestamps. That could be used for trimming silence (in this case) but also for playing a file fragment. For instance, if you don't like the applause at the beginning or the end of a live track, you could say by tagging that you don't want in general to hear it. That would not remove the sound from the track, it's still there in case you want to hear it, but in general, when it's played, it's left out. I can see where you are coming from, it's one of my biggest pet hates. But can you name a device in the same league as the SB3 that can? Not even the latest almighty Ipod cant do it -at all-. The problem is the MP3 format (and WMA/AAC for that matter), not the Squeezebox. Foobar does it well with a clever bit of cross fading 'workaround', which the SB3 could do with an update to Slimserver. But if you have ripped your MP3's using a later version of LAME, without the padding frames that historically have always been added to MP3's, you should find you get pretty good gapless playback. It's not 100% perfect, but nothing will be if people insist on sticking with MP3. However, i will say that i firmly believe companies like Slim Devices do need to take this more seriously. People around here already have one and not many people around here wont be buying one, because like you say, they find out MP3 gapless playback it not very good and move on. The number of people who really want a good gapless playback solution for MP3's are vastly underestimated It's al very well for people like me to say use a better format, but many people have massive librarys of existing MP3's they need gapless playback for. Really though, you are missing out. [slim] Re: Synchronization
I have released a new version of Softsqueeze 2.3. This will be in the 6.2 nightlies or you can download it from Sourceforge (http://softsqueeze.sourceforge.net). Later in the week I'll release a new version on the trunk. This fixes (for me anyway!) sync. I've been listening with out problem for nearly a couple of hours now. Gapless flac playback should also working again, but I have not tested this (please let me know). Several times people have asked how the buffering / sync works, so if you interested in what the problems were please read on. Three audio buffers are used in Softsqueeze; the decoder buffer holds encoded audio (mp3, flac, etc), the output buffer holds pcm samples, finally the small javasound buffer holds the samples written by Softsqueeze to the audio device. When two or more players are sync'd then the slimserver starts streaming the encoded audio but leaves all the players paused. The players send status information back to the slimserver reporting how fully the audio buffers are, when all players have enough data in the decoder buffer then the unpause command is send to all payers. The first problem was a recently introduced typo that caused a block of silence to be written into the output buffer when a new track started to be decoded in Softsqueeze. This also broke gapless flac playback. Doh! The Squeezebox decodes audio a few bytes at a time so it does not take long for the decoded pcm samples to play out of your speakers following the unpause command. In Java the most efficient to stream audio is to decode blocks of audio data, Softsqueeze uses a block size of 128000 bytes. It takes too long to decode a full audio block and start playback compared to the process in a hardware player. So Softsqueeze cheats, it starts decoding while the player is paused to reduce the latency when playback starts. The second problem was that sometimes the decoder buffer had reached the playback threshold and the unpause command sent but the first block of audio had not yet been decoded. This made Softsqueeze play behind the Squeezebox. To fix this Softsqueeze now sends zero buffer fullness until some samples have been decoded to the output buffer, causing all players to wait until Softsqueeze is ready to start playback. The opposite problem also exists, if the hardware player is slow to buffer (say working wirelessly) then Softsqueeze might have decoded lots of pcm samples. I then found that the first write to the javasound buffer could take too long, again causing lack of sync. Now to help smoothly start playback both the decoder and output buffers are filled using an exponentially increasing block size, starting with 4096 bytes until the maximum block size is reached. This helps control the playback latency, but this approach does increase the risk of an audio buffer underrun at the start of a track. Only with wider testing can we be sure the balance here is correct. I hope this now works for everyone!! I looked at the batch file and saw that it expect the JAVA_HOME environment variable to be set. %JAVA_HOME%\bin\java -classpath ..; (more) That variable is not set on my XP system. The Java runtimes were installed with the standard installer. Softsqueeze works w/o the JAVA_HOME variable. I can set the JAVA_HOME variable but I think you should check your assumption. Next problem In the Batch file you need to enclose the command name in quotes. A space in the path name of a command ends the command name. Since "C:\Program Files\..." is the standard place to install s/w under windows, you need to fix this. - Next problem I started softsqueeze and got a message saying that I should click on the up or down arrow. When I did, I got two menu lines: "random play" and "albums - sorted by Artist(0)". If I click on "albums ...", I get a blank 2nd line. If I go back to the previous menu and click on random play, I get a display showing "00:00" followed by what looks like a speaker symbol and a bar. Dead end. I guess Slightserver didn't find my music library. --- next problem Ending execution of Softsqueeze caused an exception. See attached screenshot. - I'm done until Slightserver is a bit farther along. [slim] Backing Up the Slimserver Database
Having just had an 'accident' I've restored my SlimServer program directory but am having to re-scan my music tracks to rebuild the database. The reason for that is that Slimserver runs 24/7 and SecondCopy (a Windows back-up program) says it can't back-up the database file as it in use. Are there command lines I can use to tell SlimServer to shut down and restart that I can set up in Windows Scheduler? If I can do that I can schedule the back-up as well. SecondCopy does actually have an option to try to ignore whether a file is in use but when I set that SlimServer stops whenever the back-up kicks in and doesn't restart. Thanks. Thanks for the info. No, no crash log. The thing is, slim doesn't crash. It just becomes unresponsive. When I issue the "service slimserver restart" I am told that it ends "ok", rather than receiving any "service wasn't running" messages. That's what's so frustrating, it's as if it gets into a loop. I'm not sure you're going to find a "solution". It should never happen. It appears to be a bug, so no one's likely to tell you to just turn off some feature. There seem to be one to several ways to trigger this white noise problem. iTunes volume adjustment is one, but there are other people who have had this problem who have been listening to the radio, so we likely have several causes for the same symptom. The problem until this point is that no one could reproduce it - it seemed to happen at random. Now that you have a reproduceable case, you (or someone) needs to file a bug report, in order to get the bug squashed. Can you do this? If you don't feel up to it, I could help you through it. [slim] Re: Special characters (accents, etc)
Alex: I got your file and it plays on my machine. Doesn't crash the server. Now it plays a little oddly, because the title shows up as Andúrilúúú by Howard Shoreú. I'm not sure I got the right number of trailing 'ú's. That needs to be fixed. Whether fixing this will fix the crash on your machine ... well, it's hard to predict. I can tell you, just from the left hand pane in the slim ui that you have both id3v1 and id3v2 tags in this file. That may be a good thing or it may not, depending on whether you're happy the erroneous padding stopped at 30 characters or not. There are some other odd things about these tags. This claims to be track 255, which seems unlikely but I don't think anything in slim cares, except for sorting purposes. According to Tag & Rename, the title really is stored as Andúrilúúú and also Howard Shore's name was similarly butchered. This is in both the id3v1 and id3v2 tags. Also the comment field is a string of what look like hex digits. Tag & Rename, for the v2 tags, shows a longer string of hex digits in the comment field. Slim doesn't show the comment field, although I'm not sure why. And in the V2 tags, it puts 255/-1 for the track #. I've never seen that before. I'll have to look at the actual tag encodings to see what's going on there. Someone has put a BPM tag into this file. 135.18. Did you do that? Does this file you sent me still crash your system? If so, I'll need more details of when it crashed, what player(s) you have tried to play it on, when the server crashes, how you have your display set up, what operating system, etc. Triode: you wrote: > The display is built up from 6 components: > > Line1 - left justified text on top line > Line2 - same for bottom line [this bit can scroll] > > overlay1 - right justified text on top line [normall used for progress > bar/count] > overlay2 - right justified text on bottom line [normally used for > arrow/notes symbols] > > center1/center2 - centered text on line 1 or 2 > > Now only line1 has the code to protect against utf8 strings being sent > to the display code. Did you really mean only line1 has code to protect it? Or did you mean line 2 (according to your naming system). AFAIK, nothing from the song goes into line one. The Slimserver web > page is showing 'Alien Afternoon by Genersis from Calling all Stations'. Yes, there are two display modes - paths and tags. In paths mode it assumes the parent folder to the currently playing track is the album name, and the parent to that is the artist. If this isnt how you have your music arranged, click on the 'Viewing:Paths' button at the bottom and it'll show you the tags instead. I dont think it remembers which mode it's in for next time yet though.. NB: It also toggles these two modes when you click anywhere on the now playing background. [slim] Squeezenetwork versus Slimserver - Could they be friends?
I have just upgraded to an SB3 (very happy with that) and have now got access to Squeezenetwork. The concept looks pretty good and might be the seed of some serious market uniqueness for Slimdevices. The current implementation, though might have have a missed a trick. Essentially, the SB3 is either logged onto Squeezenetwork, or onto my server but never both. Wouldn't it be better if the box could (optionally?) use Squeezenetwork for some things (such as the clock display and alarms) and stay logged in to my local server? I could use the SB as an alarm, for example, without having to leave my server on or explicitly log between Squeezenetwork and my local server when I want to stream music. There are heroic efforts underway to make it work with SlimServer with sometimes limited success. IMHO iTunes is the problem - it just likes to take over systems and do things its own way, not caring about how other software programs might interact with it. It wants to do everything on its own and expects the user to stop using anything else. I call that rude software behavior in my book and classify it as malware. I use EAC for ripping and Mp3tag for tagging. EAC, in particular, can be complicated and intimidating at first but once you get it configured properly (there are lots of guides on the net) it is far, far more powerful than iTunes, and 100% accurate. I used dBpowerAMP for a while. It's more user-friendly than EAC but it does not make 100% accurate rips and the MP3 encoder is on a 30-day licence. __ Find your next car at http://autos.yahoo.ca ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] What's the minimum slimserver version required for SB3?
Hi all, Does anybody know what is the earliest version of slimserver which will work on the SB3? I used to have an SB1, and version 5.x (5.4.1?) worked very reliably. The service (on Linux) would run happily for weeks on end. I've never had much luck with 6.0/6.1/6.2.1 (or later - I'm on nightly builds at the moment). But I could live with it, just having to issue "service slimserver restart" every couple of days. Now that I have the SB3, with its inherent wireless issues, it's a nightmare. I've just spent 20 minutes getting the thing to connect to my wireless LAN again, after the slimserver software failed again. (It never fails as such, e.g. the service is still running, but the hardware cannot connect to the service and the http://ipaddress:9000 requests just freeze). I've just issued two "service slimserver restart" messages and now it's responding again, which then enables me to connect the ahrdware. So my question: can I use 5.4.1 with my SB3 and still retain fucntionality? I only play MP3 files and listen to shoutcast, I don't (and won't) use the squeezenetwork stuff as my server runs 24x7 so I have no need. Any advice? Will 5.4.1 do what I need? many thanks! [slim] Re: NAS JUST for file storage?
Happy New Year to you too! I think you misunderstand the architecture of the Slim products. The "Slim" in slim devices comes from the concept of a slim or thin client, a music player that contains only the bare minimum needed to get the job done. Everything else is on the network, meaning it profits from economies that come down the pipe in later years without locking you into the ones in the client. For instance, cheaper hard disks, etc. In practical terms, what that means is that the squeezeboxes contain very little. They have the hardware and firmware to play music from the network, display text and graphics on the display, receive remote control codes and send them up the network. Now, there is also limited firmware to display messages during client bootup, to handle network setup, and to handle a few remote codes (like reboot the client). But it's pretty limited. So when you send CLI messages, you are sending them to slimserver, who interprets where they need to be sent, and sends them there. That's why all those people were looking for NASes that could run slimserver. Because it has to be running *somewhere* just to work at all. There is also slimnetwork, where a web site on the internet substitutes for slimserver and sends you music (but only from internet radio stations, not songs on your own hard disk). There is a project under way to break up the slim server code into several smaller pieces. Because I think most people recognize that the low level stuff that keeps the boxes supplied with audio and display stuff is quite different in nature (and dispatching priority) than the stuff that scans your music library and handles the web interface. Then the different pieces could run at different priorities in the same processor, or on totally different processors (if they communicate via a network protocol). Some people, like me and I gather you, want to actually drive the music selection in a different way or by using different software. Then we could leave some pieces of the supplied software out and substitute for them ourselves. -- Michaelwagner Michaelwagner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19839 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Update On White Noise Bacground Issue/Bug
This may be related to bug 1718. I reported a while ago occasional unbearably loud 'background' noise that happens occasionally when starting a new song on my system, usually when synched with SoftSqueeze. I uusally have to restart Slimserver to get rid of it. I was at a friend's house the other day with whom I 'shared' some files recently, when it started to happen on all my songs, and only my songs - he said that this had happened occasionally. The only unique feature of my songs as that I always set the MP3 vilume to MAXIMUM on iTunes to get round the iPod EU volume restriction. On a whim I selected all songs in iTunes and set them back to NORMAL volume. It worked, and the problem has not recurred. Version 0.2 of SlightServer available here: http://www.sendmefile.com/00220355 >From the README: THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER. Especially due to the fact that I have included Windows binaries of flac and metaflac from the "FLAC frontend" project, and vorbiscomment from the website "rarewares.org". Consider these binaries to be untrusted and act accordingly. Please send any constructive feedback to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To set up, edit the file slightserver-0.2/config/slightserver.properties. Tell it where your music files are, and where you want the server to store it's own files. By default, it searches your home directory for music, and stores its files in ~/.slightserver. On Linux, make sure you have installed metaflac, flac and vorbiscomment. To run, cd to the directory slightserver-0.2/scripts, and run slightserver.sh [linux] or slightserver.bat [windows]. You MUST be in the scripts directory, or the classpath will be wrong. Connect the squeezebox2/3 (or softsqueeze) to the server as normal. When the squeezebox connects, it will initially show how many tracks it has scanned. If it doesn't find your tracks, fix that now. To change the amount of output, edit config/log4j.properties. In general, use INFO for less output, or DEBUG for more. SlightServer has 2 modes: the "Now Playing" screen and the browser. In the "Now Playing" mode, the screen shows the elapsed time, shuffle icon, volume icon, repeat icon, and track rating on the top line. Pushing buttons 1 to 5 will set the rating for that track. (To be used eventually for smart playlists). The second/third lines show the artist/album/tracknumber/trackname. To get to the browser, press Up or Down. The menu structure is defined in config/menu.xml, so it should be reasonably easy to define menus based on composer, artist or whatever. Currently, it has "random tracks" and "album (sorted by artist)" in it. Known bugs: * Poor error handling. Be prepared to restart the server and/or the squeezebox * Sometimes, the squeezebox gets in a state where it won't play any more music (it displays "initializing"). I don't understand the slim protocol well enough to unbork it * Files that are transcoded from .ogg to .flac never get deleted. This will fill up your hard drive eventually * Should cancel a transcode when skipping tracks - skipping 10 tracks in quick succession will result in 10 transcodes all running to completion, and bogging down the server * Some files are not scanned properly and end up with empty tags * Very simple tag handling * No FFWD/REW support * No web interface * GIJ crashes with a NullPointerException deep in a library New and Noteworthy since 0.1: * Volume now is at the correct scale * Correctly handle repeated IR codes (e.g. holding down the volume button) * Transcoded files start faster * MP3 support * Configurable menu system * Random tracks are selected much more efficiently +---+ |Filename: slightserver-0.2.gif | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=644| +---+ -- clumsyoik clumsyoik's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1997 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19843 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Help required
Hi, Apologies for the dumb Q's, but I am just getting started and am having trouble with the basics of managing my music files. Set-up: SB3, SS 6.2 (on P4), I-tunes 1st Problem: So far I am in the exploatory stages. and have ripped a few CD's using I-tunes, however I am finding that I-tunes is putting songs randomly in different places. For example, if I rip one album, some songs show up as seperate albums on slim-server, in parallel to the album that the song comes from. 2nd Problem: I have subscribed to 360 share, which appears to be excellent for downloading MP3's. However, once I have down-loaded the songs, I don't know how to store them. When you download music, they end up in a shared directory. I have tried creating a short-cut to that directory, but that's not really working. Also, if i copy all of the songs, and paste them into a new directory so I-tunes can look at them, they end up being poorly tagged, and creates a 'flat file of songs' with no particular order, which clearly is unmanageable with 1000's of songs etc. If anyone can help, i'm looking for some really basic steps on how to get started, ie, 1. What s/w packages should I use 2. How to Rip 3. How to TAG/Manage 4. AS above for MP3's downloaded from the internet. Many thanks for any help you can provide. -- Badger Badger's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3037 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19842 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: SB1 & SB3 out of sync with FLAC tracks
To add some more detail - if, when they are out of sync, I unsync and sync them, then they play the current FLAC track perfectly together, so it isn't an issue with FLAC per se, but something to do with changing tracks. I'll try to do some more experiments. -- mecouc mecouc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=227 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19812 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] NAS JUST for file storage?
Hallo and Happy New Year to everyone. I read all the posts about the problems users have using NAS Storage with Slimserver. However they were all refering to using NAS for RUNNING Slimserver. I would like to ask if a different approach would be possible. That is, using NAS just for storage, and run slimserver on another networked PC (a small touchscreen PC for example). >From the touchscreen PC I'm only interested in sending CLI commands to the squeezebox. Like "add file xxx.mp3 to the queue". Since I have my own database I don't care about the database features of slimserver. What I do care about is that the file go directly from the NAS to the squeezebox and not through the touchscreen PC. That way I can even shutdown the PC after loading a playlist and music would keep playing. Would something like that be possible (with maybe nslu2)? sorry for the long post pulp -- pulp_136 pulp_136's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3274 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19839 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: How to play songs with no gap
oh, i thought the SB could deal with the gapless MP3 hacks.
