[MBZ] Sudden Acceleration Revisited
With your collective indulgence, I'd like to re-open the discussion of the topic "sudden acceleration". You may recall in mid february I opened the discussion with this submission in vol. 51 issue 39, or thereabouts: ( " So yesterday I heard what I believe was a public service announcement (by some automotive engineer, I think) on the radio saying that the least powerful brakes are going to easily overpower the most powerful engine. This suggests that applying your brakes firmly in an unexpected acceleration situation would prevent a catastrophe.") Responses from subscribers to this forum suggested that applying the brakes firmly and immediately to stop the car would be successful, regardless of the power output of the engine. Applying the brakes to merely slow down the vehicle, most concluded, would likely result in overheating the brakes to the point that they could be ineffective. The recent report of a Prius driver's scary struggle with sudden unexpected acceleration raises this topic again. I am taking no position on this issue. I am asking questions to better understand what is happening. Here are several questions that circulate through my mind. If a driver were to experience this phenomenon in a powerful car whose speed has gone well above 100 mph, would there be any hope of stopping the car using only the brakes? Can a Prius whose driver is trying to brake the car continue to accelerate? How powerful is the Prius engine? Can all cars be shifted easily into neutral in the event of this emergency? Is there any "down side" to turning off the engine in this situation? Having driven a 240D for many years, sudden acceleration sounded rather attractive . Now, not so much. I saw them when I was trying to figure out how to get the bracket off the front of the engine. They don't show the hydraulic lines' connections to the steering box (which is what I thought you said you found). http://www.w124performance.com/images/M119/PS_pumps/standard_pump/mounting_bolts2_rear.jpg says, "These are the two 6mm socket-head bolts which hold the pump to the bracket. It helps to remove the plastic air duct to the motor mount for better access and visibility. These bolts are easier to remove than the bolts which fasten the bracket to the engine block." I agree with removing the plastic air duct. In fact, removing it is mandatory. I found removing the bolts that hold the bracket to the block to be much easier than removing the ones that hold the pump to the bracket, however. http://www.w124performance.com/images/M119/PS_pumps/standard_pump/mounting_bolts4_rear.jpg says, "These are two of the three bolts which fasten the bracket to the engine block. The third bolt is at the bottom center." This is wrong. the third bolt is at the far right of the bracket casting and is a through-hole. This bolt goes into the engine block from the front. The two, threaded bolt holes with fingers pointing at them are the ones into which bolts thread from the rear. The stud at the bottom fastens the hydraulic fluid return line that plugs into the hole up on the cannister. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I tried the other evening to load up Netflix on it, and it kept telling me it couldn't work because I had an old OS (didn't) and old version of Firefox (didn't). Then I discovered I needed to load some MSFT viewer as a plug-in, which I did about 10 times and it wouldn't take. Another hour or so digging with google to try to find out why this damn thing wouldn't show a movie (Netflix "help" was useless), I found an obscure procedure wherein I needed to go create some new user profile and then try it again, which worked, finally. I am not sure who is the bigger idiot in this exercise, Netflix or Apple (not me) but it was a PITA. I did not go back to the original user profile to see if by doing the download in the new user "took" in the original user (it was just loading a plug-in to FF and I guess Safari, nothing very exotic). So 2 hours of screwing around with something about mac's peculiarities finally got me to be able to see a netflix movie at midnight by which time it was time to go to bed. "They are so easy" "Windows is abysmal" (OK, that is true, but I can't see where mac is particularly better, especially on some simple aspect like loading a plug-in in a browser) THough I will admit that plugging it into the Samsung LCD TV with a DVI<->HDMI cable took just a few minutes of fooling with output resolutions to get a half decent pic on the TV, which is what we wanted to watch a movie on. --R On 3/10/2010 10:02 AM, Alex Chamberlain wrote: On Wed, Mar 10, 2010 at 6:11 AM, Rich Thomas wrote: http://charleston.craigslist.org/sys/1637027253.html Those Lisas are worth a few hundred bucks apiece at least on fleaBay. Re: [MBZ] Spork plugs (380 SL)
Today it's a lot warmer outside, about 44 °F; somewhat more pleasant. I looked for C144, and found it buried underneath the washer reservoir. It's a big fat three-pin plastic barrel connector, and the brittle alignment ears finished breaking off as I played with it. With the ears missing it can be connected wrong if you're not careful, so I aligned to the sites of the missing ears and used a Sharpie to mark an arrow on the barrel that matches one molded into the plug, which should help. I measured the switch continuity, and found that both WOT and Idle settings worked correctly. On the engine side the Common and Idle pins were grounded, as they should be. (One hard ground, one grounded by the cold-oil sensor.) The resistance to ground of the Idle pin was 23 kΩ, for whatever that's worth. I rigged a wire from Pin 3 of the engine diagnostic connector into the passenger compartment so that I can watch the lambda valve duty cycle as I drive. (This is the BR/GN wire [ground switched] from the valve, not the BK/RD/WT [positive feed from the fuel pump relay].) I put the Fluke 87 in the car, as it has a backlight. On the way to work the Fluke 87 said 70% during warmup. While driving it was 65–82%, mostly hovered around 70–75%. Idling was 75–79%, I saw it get to 85% at the end. Idle RPM was lower, down around where it ought to be. This is pretty rare on this car, in my experience so far. I wonder if messing with the WOT/Idle switch connector affected this? On the way home I again saw high duty cycles. (Assuming that these are to be measured against ground and not across the valve, which would invert these numbers. [i.e. Wednesday's numbers.]) I checked the other vital statistics, and the RMS voltage (referenced to ground) was around 6.5–7.5 V, probably OK, but the frequency was very suspect: usually around 4,400 Hz, but ranging from 2,500–5,500 Hz! Some of my reading indicates that the 70 Hz range is more what it ought to be. I definitely think that it's time to haul that engine computer out of there and have a look at it. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I got Netflix working on the macbook, but downloading the Silverlight plugin did not take in daughter's user instance, I had to quit that user and log in to the new one I set up, and started FF and it ran fine. I think that is kinda weird as it should be running the same executable, but maybe profiles are stored differently for different users? I don't know enough about mac file structure to see if I can patch one profile over or something, I guess it really doesn't matter except for the pissoff factor. Plugged it into the Samsung LCD panel with a DVI<->HDMI cable, I had twiddled with display settings before so it all worked fine. Streaming seemed pretty good, there was only one stutter at one point, that might have been the file and not the stream. Watched Aguirre The Wrath of God. Was a very poor transfer, sound was bad but since it was in German with English subtitles it didn't really matter, and was in 4:3 for some reason not the original wide screen, but it was still an intense movie. I had not seen if for ages so was fun to revisit it. Or you can do like I do and use good-quality zip ties and small pieces of Sorbothane (the best vibration-absorbing material known to man, available in small quantities from McMaster-Carr) to attach the lines to the existing metal brackets. Or do like Jim C. does and use scraps of old bicycle inner tubes. I agree strongly that you need to do SOMETHING to dampen vibration of those lines (and a homebrew solution could definitely improve on the way it was originally engineered, pace Dr. Booth). I believe excessive vibration was the cause of the failure of #6 line on my '87---it cracked right above the connection to the IP. The only 617 I know of here with an injection pump by Mynä Diesel has an M pump from a euro 617, as the Mynä modifications do not work with the MW pump's governor.
