Little by little, the OSM map is getting as and more attractive than Google. What is a pity is that out of a tennis court, a mini-golf and a kayak boarding place, this map shows only the tennis. I made a RENDER suggestion to solve this globally and the general opinion was against it. Some call getting mini-golf and kayak visible tagging for the renderer and I call it tagging for the tourist. Google translated: These are our districts. Those terms are unfortunately translated from English, and are not dependent on the country. Thus in our admin_level = 9th district, but it is displayed as village (and village Kortrijk sees kinda weird out). For admin_level = 7, there is apparently no translation (or even no English original), and it would be difficult to translate, because the term in the Netherlands is probably different. Well, on the Belgian mailing list you will reach anyone who could change something about the functionality you have to probably implement. higher, and the self When I made some corrections to Brussels, I had pinpointed village Brussels which is the former municipality. In fact, I have a theory that boundaries should be much more simply defined by nesting subareas (UK = England + Wales + Scotland), which would make the set of borderlines easily automatically computable, but still continued to be tagged in the boundary relations as a cache. In that framework, admin_level=X would be totally superfluous because the nesting determines which boundary relation is higher or lower in the tree and it could be replaced with sort of admin_level=municipality, admin_level:fr=commune, admin_level:nl=gemeente, admin_level:ge=gemeinde, admin_level:ru=город. This would put two relations of the tree at the same level when in-between levels are missing, such as between Belgium and Brussels capital. But I know it's time lost presenting that to the Tagging list. The wiki is disparaging subareas in the first place. Another nice change is that such names are now written on the sides of the borderlines. One no longer heads to the wrong direction ;-) But, because of what we just wrote, when you see Liège next to a border, you cannot know if it's the (old) town, the municipality, the arrondissement or the province. [OSM-talk] Status of Field Papers
Hello from India! As part of a national digital literacy program my team has been experimenting with using fieldpapers[1] to introduce mapping to students from rural areas. However it looks like the service is currently down and atlas generation has not been possible over the past few days. This has brought our training program to an abrupt halt. Given the tremendous educational value of field papers, it would be welcome if the OSMF could support running such a service to make it more reliable and an integrated part of the osm.org homepage. Unfortunately we don't have the technical resources to fork the project at the moment, but it would be greatly appreciated if anyone can provide alternate solutions in the short term to continue to use field papers or a similar service to get more people to map. It's the votes cast divided by the number of seats plus one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_transferable_vote#Setting_the_quota So in this case we have 219 divided by 4 which is 54.75. If you think about it in terms of an ordinary single person election that means the winner has to get half the votes as you would expect with the quota reducing as the number of seats increases so that for a two member election you need to get a third of the votes, for a three member election a quarter and so on. Re: [Talk-in] Introduction
Hi, I've re evaluated the satellite imagary .. the MapBox one is far better in regard to paralellex errror being more directly overhead. So I've tried to use that for location, but it does not have the detail of Bing Satellite so I've used that for detail. I think that gives a fair result. At least until some on the ground survey. I'll look at it agin once I've 'finished' eleswhere and downloaded a new map. So I downloaded a map of India (OSM sourced of course). I was dissapointed by the auto routing .. so I looked at the OSM source to find that quite a few roads were not correctly connected. So I've been doing some 'editorials' or 'housekeeping' as I call it. Basicly connecting roads together, adding bridges (using bing to check them first of course). For 'error' checking/indication I use http://tools.geofabrik.de/osmi/?lon=75lat=28zoom=6 .. you have to use the left side box to check various things .. it comes up in default as 'geometry' .. 'routing' is what I use .. it is not infallable but a good indication. 'Highways' is also usefull. I use JOSM as my editor and use its validator to obtain the places where things are not connected or crossing. - I also looked at the Red Fort in Agra .. one contributor has used one offset in their mapping, while another has used a different offset (comparing using bing). I do realise that there is a shadow effect due to the side ways look of bing there. But even so they don't match up. I'm thinking of trying to tide it up. Unfortunatly neither contributor has detailed the source of their information so I cannot judge which is better. Thus I'm inclinde to simple go with Bing .. with no offset. I've made few additions in places of interest to me. One road I have deleted -- it was not conneted on either end and went through some tall buildings .. an obvious error. But mostly connectinmg roads and adding brigdges. Oh .. and a few railway crossings. Erano contenti come bambini. Sorry for the wrong format, html instead of txt. The best thing is to think befor you, or somebody else, uses a routing App, Site, etc. So when you view the route, you will see that a immidiate crossing would be shorter than the showen way. I always thought deleting correct data in osm is kind of forbidden. So i would recommend to leave it in there, its not destroying anything or? [Talk-ca] mystery opendata:type numeric tags popping up in Ontario
In editing data around Toronto, I'm seeing a bunch of entities with numeric opendata:type tags. They seem to have some kind of relation to the type of feature being mapped, but only a loose one: * 109001 → amenity=place_of_worship * 107009 → amenity=library * 104008 → building=office (though sometimes building=yes) * 12 → building=apartments There's nothing in the wiki, and they don't correspond to a field in any import I've seen. http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/?key=opendata:type shows that there are nearly 8,000 of them. [Talk-ca] Municipal data source attribution
What is the current procedure for meeting the attribution requirement of a municipal data-source released under the 'Open Government Licence ? Do I just need to add the source to the list at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Contributors ? I would like to take some of the data for Oakville released http://oakville.ca/data/catalogue.html , licensed under http://oakville.ca/data/open_data_licence.html. My understanding is that this is the Canadian OGL only v2.0 changed to list 'Town of Oakville' as the copyright holder instead of the crown. I am NOT planning an import, at this time, or any automated conversion of the shapefiles to OSM files.
Exemples de lieux à mapper (vulnérables et cartographie peu complète) #749 Missing Maps: Bangassou, Central African Republic [affected by violence in March 2013] #746 Mount Rokatenda/Paluweh/Palu'e [volcano with signs of a pending eruption, causing the mountain to be placed under alert status] #736 Missing Maps: Lulimba, Democratic Republic of Congo [region hosted more than 800,000 displaced people escaping violence elsewhere; Unlike HOT's disaster response activations, the Missing Maps tasks facilitate preemptive mapping of priority countries to better facilitate disaster response, medical activities and resource allocation when crises occur] Exemple de lieux de résidence des mappeurs à distance (apparemment sont visés les pays développés, vu les lieux de rencontres pour les évènemenets 'launch events', avec 'remote volunteers', donc 'armchair mappers').

Official results will be on the Foundation web site in future. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Foundation/AGM14 I've added some background on STV (voting method) because it is the first time I have been involved in it. Learn along with me at my site http://weait.com in several recent articles and several more on the way. I hope that you have found some inspiration and motivation from the election cycle. if so, please act on that new energy and contribute to the project by: * mapping your neighbourhood. :-) * starting a regular local event for (new) mappers * writing and publishing some awesome code * writing and publishing some awesome documentation * joining a Foundation Working Group to act on behalf of groups of mappers None of these require standing for election or waiting for another election cycle to complete. Best regards and happy mapping, Richard ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
[Talk-us] zip-city mappings
actually, it wouldn't be terribly hard for me to knock together a simple web page for looking up/entering zip code to city mappings, so i think i'll look into doing that. anyone who wants to save up shopping/credit card receipts so that they can enter the data should feel encouraged to do so. it may not happen right away because i'm pretty busy with other admin boundary stuff, but i'll try to have it in a week or two. if i include existing OSM zip-city mappings, it would need to be ODbL. some geocoder projects insist on public domain data (will CC0 do for these geocoders?) this is a detail that would need to be worked out. richard -- rwe...@averillpark.net Averill Park Networking - GIS IT Consulting OpenStreetMap - PostgreSQL - Linux Java - Web Applications - Search ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] zip-city mappings
Just keep in mind that some ZIPs cover multiple cities. The one I'm standing in now is found in parts of at least 3 different cities that I know of. Others cover both (parts of) cities and unincorporated areas outside of the city whose name they are associated with. -Nathan On November 9, 2014 11:00:42 AM EST, Richard Welty rwe...@averillpark.net wrote: actually, it wouldn't be terribly hard for me to knock together a simple web page for looking up/entering zip code to city mappings, so i think i'll look into doing that. anyone who wants to save up shopping/credit card receipts so that they can enter the data should feel encouraged to do so. it may not happen right away because i'm pretty busy with other admin boundary stuff, but i'll try to have it in a week or two. if i include existing OSM zip-city mappings, it would need to be ODbL. some geocoder projects insist on public domain data (will CC0 do for these geocoders?) this is a detail that would need to be worked out. richard -- rwe...@averillpark.net Averill Park Networking - GIS IT Consulting OpenStreetMap - PostgreSQL - Linux Java - Web Applications - Search ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

Feature thread, discusses this: as for that many to one mapping that isn't, basically, for each zip code there is a primary city and potentially a number of secondary cities. the primary city is the city name of the post office that serves the routes; the secondary cities are generally traditional place names within the delivery area; for example, for years i lived in the Lansingburgh neighborhood of Troy NY, and the post office would deliver mail for either city name. any effort to crowd source this data would need to take care of that detail. richard -- rwe...@averillpark.net Averill Park Networking - GIS IT Consulting OpenStreetMap - PostgreSQL - Linux Java - Web Applications - Search ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
Re: [Talk-us] OSMF AGM election results
Richard, thanks for the great work you and the other election monitors did to make this election run so smoothly. And thanks particularly for your series of blog posts explaining how STV (the Single Transferable Vote) works. I’ve been a supporter of election reform for a long time (something acutely needed in the US, Canada, and the UK) and STV is by far the best and most practical system I’m aware of. It was a pleasure to get to use it in this OSMF election. I’m fascinated by the chart you posted [1] that shows how the votes transferred through each round of voting. It’s interesting to compare the candidates’ manifestos and look for “coalitions of voters who transferred their votes between candidates with similar platforms. One of the great things about STV is that similar candidates don’t have to worry about stealing votes from one another. STV also discourages negative campaigns, because candidates want to gain their competitors’ 2nd and 3rd votes (and so on). Therefore, candidates are less likely to make personal attacks against their competitors. Given all the other chaos and strife that was going on with the OSMF leading up to the election, and also because STV is a new addition to OSMF’s electoral process, it’s too hard to say if STV had any meaningful positive impact on the tone of this election. Maybe we can say more in future years. I would love it if we adopted STV for the OSM US elections. Has there been any discussion about that in the past? Re: [Talk-us] State highway refs (was Re: New I.D Feature)
I know of no place where the state name is spelled out in the ref=* tag on any way or relation. Only in the 'is_in:state' tag on RELATIONS have I seen the state name sometimes spelled out. As for states that have just '123' on the way ref tags. I know of only two that have that happening in masses. And that is Florida and Georgia. Most of this was done by NE2 to make the tags 'render' back when only a limited number of characters would render on the map (since changed). In those states, people have been starting to fix those 'tags' to add in the proper state abbreviation. So, if you see a tag like ref=US 17;25 in either of those states on a way, go for it and fix it for the better (ref=US 17;GA 25). Just don't do anything automated without talking about it here on [talk-us] first of course. -James From: skqu...@rushpost.com To: talk-us@openstreetmap.org Date: Sun, 9 Nov 2014 03:10:19 -0600 Subject: [Talk-us] State highway refs (was Re: New I.D Feature) On Sun, 2014-11-09 at 03:56 -0500, James Mast wrote: Just wanted to throw this out there in case you guys have forgoten, but we also use the two letter abbreviation in almost all relations for highways in the USA (however, there are a few that do spell out the state). There are still a few places that use a convention like SH 123, SR 123, or even (horrors) just 123 by itself to denote a state highway. Currently, I refrain from making changes of this sort if it appears most of a state uses this convention. So, a couple of questions: 1. What, exactly, is fair game to change to a state abbreviation reference? 2. Which states spell out the name in the ref? I know Kansas uses K-123, and Michigan uses M-123. Are there any others to be careful of?
