Hello Jan, About the problem you mentioned: JR>>> Suddenly I can't delete msgs from any folder. If I click JR>>> on the waste basket icon or , the result is the same, JR>>> my system locks up for a few seconds. Did you try rebooting the computer? Also, check your hard disk space in that partition. If you're low, that could do it. If that's the case, kill all dupes and compress all folders and if needed, free up disk space by eliminating or moving something else. On this new machine I have TB! ALONE in a 3 gb partition, which should last me a while - but before that the kind of problems you describe occurred from lack of disk space. Hello again Jan, As I suspected, www.ontrack.com is a little closer to your location and http://www.ontrack.com/special/drquad1.asp is their Data Recovery Center. I see that what they offer is XP compatible so it shoukld work fine with NTFS, Ontrack says it can recover your data or sell you Ontrack EasyRecovery v6 and a few aother options for (I can't get into http://www.ontrack.com/buyonline/#RE7201 for some reason at the moment). There is a trial version that will let you see which files are salvageable once you cough up the cash. Spam filters
I could use some help creating a few more spam filters, currently I have a high ascii filter that works well. I'd like to add a filter that filters all messages that have more than one addressee in the To: or CC: fields. Anyone know if this is possible and how do I do it? Hi Douglas. At 3:18 PM on Saturday, August 03, 2002 you wrote the following about [a real mystery]: JR Suddenly I can't delete msgs from any folder. Also, check your DH> hard disk space in that partition. If you're low, that DH> could do it. [/...] Thanks for replying to my post. Yes I did reboot my system. I have a 60g HD w a single partition so there's plenty of space -- approx 45g so that shouldn't be the problem. I checked the OnTrack site. I think my problem is not so much one of data recovery but a utility that works with NTFS [not FAT32] which I could use to block the few bad sectors I have & fix the one file link which is what I think is affecting TB!. But to the best of my knowledge, I haven't lost any data yet. This problem may require me to remove TB! completely & re-install it in a different location but I should have a better utility that MS chkdsk anyway. I want to block off those questionable sectors. I had one person tell me that they had a similar situation which was solved by Norton systemworks 2001 [not 2000, not 2002 he said]. I've located a couple of pro versions of the program pretty cheap on ebay so I'm thinking about that but I'm not really a Norton fan. Also waiting for a Dell tech support reply. I'm game to try almost anything at this point except changing out my HD. Regards, -- Jan Rifkinson Ridgefield, CT USA TB! You should try to go to your disk manufacturer's website, and download it's recovery tool. Each disk has a few spare sectors, which aren't used by default, but can be mapped into usage, if your disk gets bad sectors (and, because of that, the bad sectors are mapped into unused space; this is better than just using a disk-checking tool to mark the sectors as bad, as you'll be able to use the space those sectors would occupy this way). -- Jernej Simoncic, http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/ ICQ: 26266467 [The Bat! v1.60d on Windows 2000 5.0.2195.Service Pack 3] The inevitable result of improved communications between different levels in a hierarchy is a vastly increased area of misunderstandi -- Law of Hierachical Communications Current Ver: 1.61 FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto: Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto: TBTech List: mailto: Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

I'm not really a Norton fan. Aside from OnTrack (who supplies the installation disks that come w/ many if not most hard drives purchased separately), among the people who have hard disk control down pat are PowerQuest (PartitionMagic & other utilities) www.powerquest.com and relatively recently I found two other firms that offer similar applications: Paragon and Acronis. http://www.paragon.ru/n_frame.htm and http://www.acronis.com I am using the Acronis OS Selector and Disk Administrator which has functions similar to PartitionMagic's. I've used it to partition, as well as resize and move partitions and change partitions from one file system format to another, with data and all already installed on the drives. It's worked well for those tasks, but didn't recognize a version of XP Home that I had installed on another hard drive that is there as a slave. So I can't recommend it as a boot manager (until I get that detail resolved after installing another OS like Linux when I have a little more time) but there are a lot of things there that might be useful and the people I dealt with were quite helpful and pleasant to deal with. Take a look at all three sites and you just might find what you're looking for on any or all of them. I'm sure you won't be afraid to use a program from the ex-Soviet Union (Paragon is in St. Petersburg). I was already trying out the Acronis OS Selector when I ran into that one, but what I saw on the website looked very complete. If you need any info regarding the Acronis OS Selector I can check on it's functions for you, since I have a fully functional copy. For instance: I could make a NTFS partition and try to change it to FAT32. Would that help? Acronis also offers something called "Acronis Recovery Expert" for $29.95 but you might need to have it installed before your problem occurs. Is it OE or is it USA programming? I prefer top-replying, don't often re-read the original post, dislike the colorization that must be waded through in a reply to read the the current (answer) post. If I can't remember the original post, dropping to the bottom to read the original is nicer than wading, especially since I often don't maximize emails as I go through them. The reason I ask about "American" is because I believe Netscape, Eudora, Pegasus, web services, etc., all may use top reply. Please explain about the signature problems you mention. You can find Build 08 and 09 here: http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~irfaiad/ In the middle of the page under "Site News" you should download and install "Build 08 Binary Distribution". After you have installed Build 08, install Build 09... but you must first have Build 08 installed as Build 09 is only a mini-installer and requires a previous version installed. Build 09 will automatically install the latest TB/PGP Plugin. After Build 09 is installed, go to Tools/OpenPGP/Choose OpenPGP Version and choose the 6.5x version. That should be all there is to it. > that's all, I just get no err, I can't import my key, I've no idea of > what the problem is... Try PGP 6.5.8ckt and then report back if you run into any problems. Well it is not entirely just Outlook, but it has been spawned a lot by outlooks default behavior. Netscape does it I believe, and I think Pegasus and Eudora can have it customized. > Please explain about the signature problems you mention. I am not > certain I understand. If you look at a majority of the emails posted on the list, they have a signature delimiter in the format of "-- " (mine has one too). TB!s behavior to stop over-quoting, and inclusion of pointless signatures is to strip everything that appears *after* that delimiter. Now with the method that KoMpLoT used, the whole original message/reply would be snipped if I were to try replying (from TB!). This can make it awfully difficult to follow long threads in conversations if there is no context for a reply. This is another reason that top quoting is often avoided. In some cases (I accept) that bottom quoting is prefered, and I do use it myself to particular groups of people, but any lists I am on, or news groups, I use quoting where it is necessary. Notice how I had snipped out the irrelevant part to my reply (just as you did in yours), and quoted what was needed. I also put the details about the signature cropping *after* your question. This makes it easier (generally) to establish which question I am referring too when I answer. -- Jonathan Angliss () PGP Keys : mailto:?subject=SendKeys Current Ver: 1.61 FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto: Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto: TBTech List: mailto: Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

I mean, if I didn't have a clue what this thread was, then I'd have to read down just to get an idea, then read back up to work out your reply again. You'll probably find a majority of people on this list prefer top quoting because it leads to easier to understand threads, making things easier to follow... but that is my view anyway. I cannot tell you what you should do ;)) Another problem with bottom quoting is it often leads to over quoting, and includes a whole lot of unimportant text that your reply doesn't even reference. Take for example, the reply to my message, you could have cut it down to maybe the first two lines of my reply, and everybody still would have got the idea, but the whole email was quoted... but I'm getting off-topic, so I'll let it rest. -- Jonathan Angliss () PGP Keys : mailto:?subject=SendKeys Current Ver: 1.61 FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto: Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto: TBTech List: mailto: Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

I'm not 100% sure on this, maybe one of the more technically users could correct me here. Try a regexp to filter it. In the filter string, put something like: ^CC:.* Then in the advanced tab (I think) turn on regexp matching. I cannot 100% remember the name of it off the top of my head, I'm at home, and use TB! at work... not got TB! running on linux yet ;) As a side point, unless the mail client is severely broken, there is no BCC field shown in the email, but you can match in the kludges for your email address. -- Jonathan Angliss () PGP Keys : mailto:?subject=SendKeys Current Ver: 1.61 FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto: Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto: TBTech List: mailto: Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

E> If I can't remember the original post, dropping to the bottom to E> read the original is nicer than wading, especially since I often E> don't maximize emails as I go through them. There are some things you need to consider here: a) You're writing to others and not yourself when you reply to a post. The formatting should therefore be in a way that the recipients prefer and not you. b) In a democratic environment as this list, majority rules. If most of the membership prefers a certain type of formatting, then that's the one that should be used. You're the first person I've read that actually defends top replying the way you did. It's certainly a genuine one and I can understand the basis behind your preference, though I'm surprised that the disadvantages of such a method doesn't outweigh the advantages you stated. c) The list promotes and prefers that members format their mail in a particular way (contextual, nested replies, rather than top or bottom replying) with the knowledge that it will not please everyone (I don't know if everyone will ever be pleased about anything except having their own way which just cannot happen on a moderated, and hence, more orderly list). This is so because the preferred format offers the following advantages: i) It avoids over-quoting since the original message is broken up into parts and the various segments/paragraphs directly answered beneath. ii) Misunderstandings about what the replier is answering to is minimised if what he's specifically answering to is quoted above. iii) It helps to minimise missing out pertinent material that needs to be addressed in the original message. I always left things out when I was forced to use top quoting while I was away for a couple months in Japan. My wife always accused me of not answering questions she asked. :) I guess I'm accustomed to contextual nested replies. iv) It does make for easier reading and understanding of the replies for most in that it avoids having to scroll back down to the original message to reread what you are replying to. You're an exception which I accept. However, please consider what your recipients want to see in your replies. If I have to send private mail to you, I hope that I'll remember to top quote for you. :) E> Please explain about the signature problems you mention. I am not E> certain I understand. You don't use a signature delimiter so your messages don't pose this problem. However, if you reply to messages that contain the signature delimiter, dash, dash, then all the text below the delimiter will be stripped from the reply. If you top reply, insert your signature with the delimiter and then quote the original message below this, all the original message will not be quoted in the reply. This can make contextual replying difficult for those who wish to do so. - -- -=Allie C Martin=- List Moderator | TB! v1.61 | Windows XP Pro PGP/GPG Public Key: mailto:?Subject=2B0717E2 _ -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.1.91 (Win32) iD8DBQE9TJyYV8nrYCsHF+IRAq46AKCpNorKQVEdb8MRjL25gy9Dj3t1nwCgg+sJ 6iLZZFHH6tAYS+zTdd37C4M= =PM53 -END PGP SIGNATURE- Current Ver: 1.61 FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto: Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto: TBTech List: mailto: Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

Is this a country thing? IMO, I don't see how one can compare e-mail replies to filing papers away. Unlike stored documents, e-mail offers you the ability to make things contextual. I wish I could with documents. Since I can't really cut them to pieces and graft the pieces into other documents, I have to stack them, one on top of the other. - -- -=Allie C Martin=- List Moderator | TB! v1.61 | Windows XP Pro PGP/GPG Public Key: mailto:?Subject=2B0717E2 _ -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.1.91 (Win32) iD8DBQE9TJ+3V8nrYCsHF+IRAhw2AKDy8t3tq35PU/MaHjhPLTn6W+Wr+gCeMThD MySbldAAjuQFI7AW3fkEU1o= =qrot -END PGP SIGNATURE- Current Ver: 1.61 FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto: Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto: TBTech List: mailto: Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

You should ACM> post in a format that most of your recipients will prefer. >From http://www.river.com/users/share/etiquette/ Post In-line for Context (up to table of contents) When you quote, you're doing it to provide context. Requiring your readers to scroll down and then back, repeatedly (as they attempt to figure out what the heck you're talking about), is a rather difficult way for you to make the context available. Providing the context up-front will get you better results. It is far easier for your recipients to follow the ongoing conversation in a message that uses quotes in-line like this: > Quote (pruned properly) Your response > Quote of another point (pruned properly) Your response to the second point than it is for your readers to follow along if you use top-posting like this (thanks to Adam Brower by way of Patricia Shaffer): Oh! Now it makes sense to me. Okay! No more top-posting for me! > It's annoying because it reverses the normal > order of conversation. In fact, many people > ignore top-posted messages. > > What's so wrong with that? > > > That's posting your response before > > > the message you're quoting. > > > > People keep bugging me about > > > > "top-posting." What does that mean? or as in this touching example (from Clifton Sharp): "I'll see you at Linda's wedding." "Well, see ya soon." "Congratulations!" "Ten thousand a year." "How much?" "Got a really big raise this time." "Sorry to hear it. How's the job?" "She's not feeling well. Flu, I think." "Same as ever. How's yours?" "How's your wife?" "They painted her purple. They should call her the Prune Fart now." "Good. Did you hear what Martin and Sheila did to the Sea Breeze?" "Good, and you?" "Bill! How the heck are you?" Top-posting makes your message incomprehensible to many of your readers. In normal conversation, after all, you don't answer to something that has not yet been said. Replying at the top confuses your readers, making any point you're trying to get across very unclear without them scrolling down and back repeatedly, searching to re-integrate context. That extra, wholly unnecessary work leads to reader irritation, or worse, to readers just not bothering with your words at all. Since your object is to get your message across, help your readers follow by placing your words in context, not prior to the context. Doing otherwise, forcing your readers to go to extra work unnecessarily, is usually considered insulting. Delivering your words in an insulting manner certainly doesn't help your case. Instead, post in-line to preserve context and respect your readers. -- 04 August 2002, 04:35 [ Adam Rykala : ] [ [new-wales] project : www.new-wales.net ] [ Public key : ] Absence makes the heart grow fungus. On Saturday, August 03, 2002, ETM wrote in <">mid:>: E> Is it something in TB that bothers people and I E> am not catching on to what it is? ETM, No, it's the people in the TB! mailing list who are guarding the gates against the heretics :-) I agree with the general approach here, that snipping is good, and that interspersing one's response within the appropriate part of the previous message is good. However, Outlook and Notes top quote for a reason: it preserves the entire record of the thread. A user can still snip and intersperse a response. Plus, it's easier to read in many cases. This is, however, a situation where what has become standard practice for most people (in email, not in newsgroups) is nevertheless considered bad practice by many. Netiquette generally favors bottom quoting. With TB!, it's easy to set up templates that automatically provide bottom quoting. -- JN Current Ver: 1.61 FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto: Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto: TBTech List: mailto: Bug Reports: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/

Enable regular expressions in the filter options and use the string: ^CC:.* Location: Kludges Presence:Yes You cannot filter on BCC at the TB! level since there's no BCC field but you could do it indirectly. However, you can achieve the same effect by using this: String: Location: recipient Presence: No (If the message isn't addressed to you directly then it must have been BCC'd) Use the second string as an alternative string, i.e., set it up under the alternatives tab so that a match will occur if a message is either CC'd to you or if it's not directly addressed to you. No the problem is that with top posted threads it is very difficult to enter into a discussion that has already started. One must go to the bottom and scroll up to the start of the last section to read it, then scroll up to the section before that, then the one before that. The parts of the message are ordered backwards from the top. In addition, top posting clients such as Lookout Distress ignore the "-- " sig delimiter convention and leave way too much extraneous text in the e-mail or USENet post. We are not speaking of national styles, but common sense and experience with this form of communication. In short, top posting and over quoting are as much an abomination as HTML or rich text formatting in a plain text medium.
