Re: [313] Detroit Techno Art
Not sure how relevant all of these are to detroit techno, but here are some of more recent artists i was looking at in my 4+ years of art school, most are recent enough to be contemporary but old enough to have big glossy books published on their work: bill viola - video gary hill - video matthew barney - video/film moriko mori - video tony oursler - video/sculpture mona hatoum - video/sculpture mike kelley - sculpture/painting (went to Univ. of Mich. and is friends w/ sonic youth) charles long - sculpture (did a cool sculpture installation w/ music of stereolab) jessica stockholder - sculpture/mixed media dennis oppenheim - sculpture/mixed media donald judd - minimal sculpture (but wont call it minimal) richard serra - minimal sculpture robert morris - the granddaddy of modern minimalism robert irwin - light based sculpture/installation james turrell - light based sculpture/installation dan flavin - light based sculpture gerhard richter - painter ross bleckner - painter howard hodgkin - painter sure i'm forgetting a lot since i've only been following music lately. i've also always thought that early detroit techno had a lot in common w/ the italian futurist art movement of the 1920's. They had a big manifesto about how art needed to embrace technology and they were always working with themes of industrialization, motion, autos/transportation, time and space. also maybe check out some of the printmaking of max ernst (source of the brinkmann moniker)- thats some pretty crazy stuff. -p On Wed, 21 Jun 2000, jes wrote: Mark Rothko. Re: [313] [was] Innovator Vs. Red Planet [now is] manners, andhodge podge
As early as the thirties and forties, film sound was progressing in this direction. One of my film professors who specializes in sound actually played me clips of imageless films (if you will), where people made music by mutilating and tapeing objects to film. They would paste on leaves, cut rhythms into it (ala Brinkmann) and record ambient sound to make experimental music. I can't say much of it was particularly pleasant to listen to, but it was probably the first. Re: [313] Passion and Survival
No one is dismissing the legacy of New Order or Depeche Mode, et al. I wasn't a fan but of course New Order were important. If you read the NME and those Brit rock rags in the 80s NO were deified. Yet the NME and Melbody Maker, which set up the tradition for rock (and later dance journalism), privilege white usually heterosexual males making punk/rock-inspired music (albeit they embraced Morrissey) at the expense of others and Joy Division/NO came from that, so they were appropriated in that context. NME pretends to be so left wing yet it's bullocks, taking the piss out of the Wu-Tang and Drexciya and jumping on dance and hip-hop just because it's a novelty to them. NO dominated that Dancing In The Streets series and had more coverage than Prince! I don't mean to butt in on this one, but being a long time fan of New Order, I have to comment that any kind of media coverage that they've recieved througout the years relative to techno concerns has almost been secondary and at times dismissive. When they have talked about their influcences, the early 80's NYC electro scene is often mentioned Their dance sensibility is very much derived from an African-American-centric viewpoint/influence.

RE: [313] Mille Plateaux
4. Mille Plataux. Clicks and Clacks is very interesting. I'm keen to hear opinions on other MP releases. The Porter Ricks self-titled LP from a couple of years ago is quite interesting. If you're familiar with their work, this album maintains their dubby, underwater soundscape feel but uses differing styles throughout the tracks, which makes for interesting listening. I wasn't too sure about this when I first got it, especially the track which uses distorted guitar and (perhaps?) live drumming, but it didn't sound like anything I'd ever heard before, so I stuck with it and it still gets a regular workout on my stereo - one of my favourites to turn out the lights and turn up the volume. I love albums that challenge your preconceptions, they seem to be the ones that really stand the test of time. Respect JasonB
the monkey speaks!
June 2000 Daniel Monkey here reporting from The Habitat. We've been very busy lately preparing the label for a big change. We recently signed an exclusive manufacturing and distribution deal. This process has delayed us, but now everything is getting back on schedule. What this means to you is better distribution, larger pressings and more releases. We are very excited by this because we get to do what we love. That is, to put out interesting music. So here is what to expect in the months to come: July 15 2000 -- official release date of Merrick Brown vs. T. Millar 12 (MTEK 01). This is a co-release between MMR and Tektite Recordings and our first foray into techno. It is intended primarily to be a DJ release. Distribution has been secured so keep an eye out for it. Copies will be available through the Mad Monkey website starting on July, 15 2000. To be released in Late Summer/Early Fall: Repressing of Neutral - Font Translation Errors CD (digi-pak) We are repressing a larger quantity and will get much wider distribution. Neutral has been getting a lot of attention lately. Look for features on Neutral in upcoming issues of XLR8R, URB and CMJ. For more info on Neutral take a look at http://jega.madvision.co.uk (look at Planet Mu artists and 20 questions -- look for the Nicole Elmer sections) Burning Rome - Whistler's Bombardier CD. This is the follow-up to Senseless on Mindfield Records. Whistler's Bombardier is an evolution of the ideas explored in Senseless with a much looser and experimental direction. It is another sound for MMR and it has been getting heavy rotation here at The Habitat. This release also contains a remix by Atom Heart. For further info on Burning Rome check out http://www.burningrome.com We have a few more artists lined up for forthcoming releases but we will have to keep that quiet for now. As we get closer to release dates we will update you. for a sneak at what is planned see http://www.metarc.com (look under the news section) Other interesting news: We are arranging a showcase for Mad Monkey in New York City in October. This is part of a 4 day festival put on by Safety In Numbers (http://www.safetyinnumbers.net). Labels involved include (but not limited to) Carpark, Isophlux, Inzec, Merck, Krackfive, Hydrant, Tigerbeat, Obliq and Toshoklabs. Many of our artists will be there. We will keep this list updated with details when they are available. Lastly, an exclusive 'Army of the 23 Monkeys' MP3 for everyone. Point your browsers to http://www.madmonkey.org/pointless.mp3 Thanks and remember: THINK SIMIAN! P.S. Also the relation between music and art.. very interesting. the obvious connection here is graffiti in hip hop - isn't it unusuall that no other art forms have really been spawned as a close relation of another musical style? Thoughts? I don't know how new this is. If you look at the history of visual art (i'm really no authority) it seems like most of the established artists draw from current philosophical/critical discussions, the social moment and other forms of art for inspiration pretty often. I think what's interesting about graffiti in terms of this discussion is that both graffiti and hip hop come about almost at the same time and work hand in hand, both completely rejecting the means and methods of nearly all that precedes them, and doing so in a very counter-cultural or subcultural way - outside of the music and art mainstreams. That probably isn't new either, but the extremity of the change and the availability to low income participants is a pretty drastic change. then again, I'm really not an authority, I'm sure others know more about it than me and can expound upon that. Not completely related: Futura 2000's work for Mo' Wax seems pretty nice to me, especially Heads Vol. 2. Not sure if this is original work for the label, but there's a strong relationship there. His stuff is on a good deal of their releases. Two anecdotal notes: I saw an exhibition at the Chicago MOMA with a weird huge styrofoam looking ball with headphone plugs all over it. The headphones played Stereolab's Aluminum Tunes. Nice... The San Francisco MOMA recently had it's (10th?) anniversary party featuring the work of Sol Lewitt (?) with Mark Ambrose and Stacey Pullen spinning. The exhibition was open til 2am and Stacey Pullen DJed until 4am. Re: [313] Detroit Techno Art
Into this techno related art discussion i would also like to throw chuck close... upon seeing his work, the first thing that i thought (after wow) was how much it looked like music to me... how the individual pieces containing their own design all come together to make one large image... and from afar it look like on piece, and you don't see all of the pieces until examined more closely... also, the methodology of how most electronic music is created, piece by piece and then assembled to form a whole... also, after becoming paralyzed i think that he had to use some technology to get him around his works or a computer if i remember correctly... the exhibit was a few years ago, so i don't remember the details about the work creation... http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/Exhibitions/Close/default.htm if you go to the link and click on techniques, and then oil, you will see a detail of what i mean... i am referring to most of his work since 1986.. also... bill viola would have to be at the top of my list for integrating art and technology... as far as drawing a connection between rothko and techno, to me it seems obvious that the hard shapes and lines and color contrasts have blurred edges, which i think is reflected in the subtlety of a lot of techno... oftentimes the most important part of a song is the subtle one, not the immediate kick or melody, but the slight changes that merge the two into a piece... ok, enough art crap from me... peace, holly
Re: [313] Detroit Techno Art
I think Mondrian and Kandinsky are good representatives, both express links to music and structure, in particular with Kandinsky's theories (see his book, Point and Line to Plane). Much of the Bauhaus artist speak and call for modernism, but are more structured forms. What is great about Bauhaus is that it spoke to several forms from architecture to art to all forms of design. Also look at Futurism which though mainly associated with the visual arts has great manifestos. Though looking back on all these it may seem dated. How about Hans Hoffman, Howard Hodgkin, Jackson Pollock to be a little more now? They are all painters so again it may seem dated for Techno. Alot of these visual elements however have good associations to music. Take a look at Jazz art, especially the stuff for Blue Note (see Blue Notes' book on Jazz cover art). Samy rhythmic reflection of music based on repetition of shape, expressive use of color. But again is it dated? Should we be associating it more with newer media like video and computer graphics? Maybe Nam June Paik, video artist? Personally I don't necessarily feel the 3D computer graphics reflected the music. The stuff I recall from the Mindvision and other video cassettes were cheesy and in my opinion didn't capture the music. It was just decoration. I do however like the snippets I've seen of Jeff Mills videos done by Pilot Pictures (www.pilotpictures.com). These are more in line of what I was thinking of when listening to the music. Re: [313] Detroit Techno Art
I think the abstraction when you get within a foot of a Chuck Close portrait certainly could be seen as music. The whole less so because it is more figurative. I think another to check out is Richard Diebenkorn (check http://www.jpmorgan.com/CorpInfo/Sponsorship/Diebenkorn/) with his Ocean Park series, figurative in reference, but abstract in reprsentation. Again structure and rhythm. I also think of the San Francisco Bay Figurative Art, like David Park. Alot of their paintings were abstract figurative works revolving around jazz clubs and musicians. To bring it back local, what about Diego Rivera's work at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Working class. The DEMF poster (was done by a local artist I believe) art has elements of futurism/cubism done in a Diego Rivera theme. It's all about movement. Holly C MacDonald-Korth [EMAIL PROTECTED] - 06/22/00 10:41 AM Into this techno related art discussion i would also like to throw chuck close... upon seeing his work, the first thing that i thought (after wow) was how much it looked like music to me... how the individual pieces containing their own design all come together to make one large image... and from afar it look like on piece, and you don't see all of the pieces until examined more closely... also, the methodology of how most electronic music is created, piece by piece and then assembled to form a whole... also, after becoming paralyzed i think that he had to use some technology to get him around his works or a computer if i remember correctly... the exhibit was a few years ago, so i don't remember the details about the work creation... http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/Exhibitions/Close/default.htm if you go to the link and click on techniques, and then oil, you will see a detail of what i mean... i am referring to most of his work since 1986.. also... bill viola would have to be at the top of my list for integrating art and technology... as far as drawing a connection between rothko and techno, to me it seems obvious that the hard shapes and lines and color contrasts have blurred edges, which i think is reflected in the subtlety of a lot of techno... oftentimes the most important part of a song is the subtle one, not the immediate kick or melody, but the slight changes that merge the two into a piece... ok, enough art crap from me... peace, holly - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Detroit TechnoArt (Spaces)
Two spaces that come to immediate mind are the now defunkt Critical Space and the CPop Gallery. Critical hosted numorous young, talented Detroit artists -both experimental and traditional- and DJs. SK-1 (tad mullinex-SP?) had a residency there and so did Jerry Abstrakt. Though the nights were never packed, it was still a very cool place to hang out, hear music and see art and meet the artists. Ghost 2000 showed alot of work there as well, his art is incredible if you haven't seen it. Though the people who laid down the influence, those who continue it should be recognized and given the correct forum to do so. The space was also host to one or two parties for MotorMouthMagazine. CPop, Ive been in once or twice and though Im not familiar with it, has given younger and old artist a chance to show their work in Detroit ina more formal gallery setting. And shall we NOT forget Subculture Media located upstairs:). thats my .10 on this one. diana Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Software question revisited
A while ago I posted a question to the list about the merits of Cubase vs. Logic audio and vice versa. Based on the discussion, I decided to go with Cubase because it would be easier to learn. Besides, I don't really want to do anything all that advanced, just sequence wave files along with some MIDI data to run an outboard anaolg synth via a Kenton Pro 2000 MIDI to CV/Gate controller. Well, things seemed to be going pretty smoothly until I realized the MIDI output seems to be lagging a bit. That is, the timing of the notes coming out of my synth (a Roland MC202, by the way) is off. I remember someone on the list mentioning that they had experienced a similar problem with Cubase, so that is why I decided to pose this quesiton once again. Should I just scrap Cubase and go with Logic? I have cracked copies of both. And on that note, could this be a software problem due to the crack? A friend of mine mentioned that cracks are not always that reliable, that sometimes the software does not run properly. Also, I know this is all slightly OT and I was thinking about taking this discussion to the creators list, but I've seen posts on some of the other lists I'm on that said the creators sux? Any feedback on that? Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

I also so saw Carl Craig at Cranbrook a few summers ago, it was pretty interesting, especially seeing all those old flyers. I saw groove at a film festival in minneapolis. It follows the story of a rave in san francisco in that hip fit 4 or 5 mostly unrelated stories into one movie style. It follows the experiences of various party-goers as well as the promoters as they perpare for the party, try to find the map-point, do drugs for the first time, end up playing in the main timeslot cause the headliner hasn't shown up yet, save each other from overdoses and acid freak-outs, leave when the party gets busted, come back in after the police leave, and dance till dawn. While it's pretty well-made, I'd say its main value is that it'll give you a good laugh. while everything about it is incredibly cliched, I suppose it captures the essence of raves (at least raves circa 1992-95 or so) pretty well. So yeah, i'd reccomend it. But it is pretty silly. check it out at www.groovethemovie.com chris

Re: [313] FW: Groove
i saw it this week. it thought it a was a piece of crap. i saw it described in flyer as as a meg ryan movie set at a rave. another way of putting it, aaron spelling productions present...it was a turgid and conventional plot that happend to involve a rave. as a piece of film making it was it plain dull. the plot plodded along, with large sections of tedium. but what are you going to do. the fun and excitement of a rave is the personal experience of dancing your arse off. as it sas at body and soul 'dancing is not a spectator sport'. it's something which is pretty much innefable in the language of film. i think it's telling to compare it to the welsh movie human traffic which was which was quite enjoyable light entertainment. i guess it's the 'saturday night fever' of rave. unfortunately it justn't doesn't come anywhere near 'snf'. just remember when disco's utter commercialsation resulted in a backlash and the death to disco movement, the beats just went underground mutating into house. it's time again to submerge... btw, i'm no fan of trance and so haven't listened to any of it for quite some time (since the early days of harthouse/eye q). the music that digweed played, is that representative of the stuff he plays? is it representative of trance? james John Bush [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 06/22/2000 02:13:41 PM To: 313 313@hyperreal.org cc:(bcc: James Bucknell/Magazines/Hearst) Subject: [313] FW: Groove Groove is coming to the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor July 28-31, and will be showing at 9:30 p.m. each night. Re: Detroit records
This is a nice thread. 1) The rarest record I own (of all records) is the Buka / Cicciolina split 7, which has to also be the coolest record I own. It's a split 7 between a Croatian noise/grind band doing odd rock music and a bootlegged side of Italian ex-porn star / member of government (?) Cicciolina performing Sexy Porno Star (disco) live with presumably the Buka guys talking dirty in some Balkan tongue over the recording they're making. The cover is _extremely_ vulgar. I guess there were something like 50 or less of these given out to friends of Dave / Psycho Mania records out of Scotland and friends of Buka. I also have a near complete Patareni discography (making me one of about a hundred people on Earth who know who the Patareni are and one of I think three outside of Croatia who have almost all their records.) 2) The rarest Detroit techno record I own is probably Plaid's Scoobs In Columbia 12 on GPR. I guess there are only 200 of those, very rare and very cool as well. The rarest truly awesome record I own is The Philosophy of Sound and Machine CD which is limited to something like 500 and is one of the biggest treasures in IDM/313. I also have all that old Detroit and Black Dog stuff that most other fanatics have but no crazy rare but crappy white labels. 3) Favorite record? Argh. Tough one. Favorite 12 is Underground Resistance's Punisher. Favorite CD is probably Innovator but the Martian, Depth Charge 1, Autobahn and 76:14 all come very close. Matt

Re: [313] Detroit Techno Art
I think Mondrian and Kandinsky are good representatives, both express links to music and structure, in particular with Kandinsky's theories (see his book, Point and Line to Plane). Kandinsky was a russian artist but the russians hated him because they were all gung-ho proletariet socialists and had really strong opinions about what should be considered art (i.e. suprematist and constructivist movements fronted by kasmir maleavich). Kandinsky was into more expressionist stuff that the russians considered totally frivolous, so he ended up spending most of his life in germany. But what I thought was coolest thing about his work was trying to capture music and sound in painting. he also did some work with russian comoposer Alexander Scriabin. Scriabin had some really interesting ideas and for a while was trying to create music that crossed the human senses. sounds that invoked a sense of color rather than sound- i.e. controlled synesthesia. he also started a project to build a big color organ that played lights along w/notes - like from the end of Close Encounters movie except some 50 years earlier. I'm not even all that familiar w/ his music, but he had some really interesting ideas and theories- would recommend looking him up sometime. -p
