Re: [313] Amsterdam/Belgium questions

2001-02-06 Thread Phonopsia
I hear Dave Angel's mixing is quite good. I've enjoyed his contribution to
the X-Mix series (#4) for a number of years but I've never seen him live.
It's tight, diverse and he manges to keep a consistent feel while covering a
lot of ground quickly. Good stuff! At worst, the track selection should be
excellent. If you're into this series at all, I thought the video portion
was somewhat weak relative to volumes 2 and 3. If I remember right, the CD
has more songs anyway. I traded in my video for the CD.

Sounds like a fun trip. Have a blast!

Hi. I'm going to be in Amsterdam from March 20th through the 26th. Anyway,
I was looking for info on clubs and record stores (preferrably ones that let
you listen before you buy) in the Amsterdam areatechno-related, of
course. :) Never been there before, so I'm pretty clueless about where to
look. Also, I noticed Dave Angel is playing at Fuse that weekend, and was
thinking of taking a side-trip down there to check it out. I've heard his
production work, but I was wondering if anybody has heard him spin, and what
their opinion was of that. Thanks!

This is extremely cheeky, but I have decided to auction off my spare copy of
this on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1408147459 - there is
also a Dopplereffekt 12 and an early Romanthony 12. Sorry for the blatant
self advertising, at least you know it is all for a good cause ;) I redeem
myself (I hope) with recommendations below...

Night Time World 1 (Cheap) is the best techno album ever, IMO. Everybody
should own a copy of it. I am also a big fan of the more stringy stuff on
Duet. The recent Night Time World 2 is not quite as good as the first
instalment, but it is still worth picking up. The last slice in particular
is an excellent extension of the Detroit Techno blueprint in a way that
actually retains it's honest soulful element. Conjures for me a kind of Mobb
Deep from Neptune sound.

Jonny.

Metropolis at Berlin Film Fest/Jeff Mills on Premiere World TVCheck it out
(below). And on the subject of the new KMS, having now listened to it, I'd
have to agree with Marsel, it's not all that. But the Shake mix is
interesting, as you'd expect.

Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS at Berlin Film Fest:

The Berlin Film Fest/Berlinale RETROSPECTIVE this year is dedicated to FRITZ
LANG. Born in Vienna, Lang moved to Berlin after the First World War,
working later in the USA and later becoming Germany's best known motion

METROPOLIS - in a restored and digitally edited version.
The 2 1/2 hour version will be shown on Thursday the 15th of February.

The feature will include an interview with musician JEFF MILLS: -composer of
the 21st-century electronic soundtrack inspired by METROPOLIS (Tresor and

interpretation of METROPOLIS

Jeff Mills' METROPOLIS at Berlin Film Fest (BERLINALE):

Jeff Mills' METROPOLIS will be shown at the reception the German Government

Definitely go to Rotterdam -- short trainride south of A'dam. It's
beautiful, quiet, and has great record stores. It's the home
of Clone Records, one of the nicest record stores in Europe, and home
of Clone Distribution. There are also several other record stores
along the same street that are wonderful -- not all techno, but cool.
I picked up all sorts of cool used records ...

I'm sure you'll hear from some lowlanders about this trip, but that's
my 2 cents...

I saw Dave Angel in Detroit and he played hard, fast techno, so I spent
most of my time in the study with Hannah.

In the Dark We Live - Aphrohead (Bush Records)

The one to get is the release on emotive records, 1994, it is full of
interesting titleing and remixes. The main version, the one that *everyone*
played is actually a remix by Dave Clarke(according to the record); In thee
Dark We Live - dave clarke's 312 mix. Then, there is another remix by dave
clark on the flip side, dave clarkes 313 mix, that sounds like it
*massively* influenced another record from about 95; The Storm - Surgeon
Dub, (dub?!?!?!? Its one of the roughest records I own!!), released as a
bonus type track on Dave Clarke's Southside release on Deconstruction -
1996.

So here we have an interesting thing. The version of In The Dark that is
known by everyone. *Is* it really a Dave Clarke track?

Since I can think of this record on at least 3 labels (Bush, Reload,
Emotive) with the same info it's safe to say it's Dave Clarke. Personally,
I never found the correlation that huge between the 313 mix and Surgeon.

list, I have some 40 or 50 records of him...)

The Radical Fear label used to be a really good label. It's a shame it ain't
around anymore. So many good records came out on that label (Markey, K-Hand,
Professor Traxx). One of my favorite being DJ Sneak's 'on a Sneak tip' and
of course all the Armando records.

Additionally I believe that the Clasbackk label is Felix's doing... I
believe I've got a couple of 12's by LA Williams and Bryan Zentz on that
label. Is it still operating.. was there a Harrison Crump involved in
there too.. believe i saw his name popup only a few weeks back.

For those who have yet to view them, Joe Vaughn's Visions of the First

his vision included _three_ photos with richie as the subject matter..since

represented more than once i was really put off by this choice...

The reality is because Rich is more photogenic, that impish little grin!

serious and not-so-serious stuff. And what's more, it's free!

Distribution is by Integrale Muzique, Infectious Metropolis in the UK and

I heard Dave Angel @ The End in London last December and he absolutely rocked

techy House tracks, I remember Hatiras Spaced Invader being played. I was
impressed as it had been a few years since I'd last heard him.
I noticed he's playing Fabric on 24/02/01 along with Marco Carola and Terry

Last year the line up was not announced until a
little less than a month before. I kept telling people
that when Carl Craig is in charge of booking talent,
there should be little doubt left that any of the
talent will be any where less than par. And if you
think its easier said..I lost the possiblity of having
a full camera crew with me because I didn't get
spefics in time. It's hard to prove a budget worthy
when you have nothing to give but your word to a bunch
of clueless connect-i-cut suit dorks.

Know this (other than what Kyle said), it will be
different, it will be good and put a little faith in
Carl and his remarkable taste and talent and the city

Last year I don't think the lineup was even announced until the beginning of

no one should be afraid of detroit

2001-02-06 Thread Kent williams
Detroit is a large american city, meaning normal big city precautions
should be taken -- stay in a group, stay on main streets, don't flash
cash, yadda yadda. But no one should be afraid to stay downtown for
DEMF. I didn't hear about any problems at last year's show, and I don't
expect any this year.

And you won't be able to turn around on the Plaza without seeing a policemen.
That's good news in terms of personal safety, bad news if feel like sparking
up a blunt ;-)

And going back and forth to Windsor would be a horrible pain in the ass.
The Canadians are mellow, but American border guards can be right bastards.
And they'll be especially surly during DEMF with all the extra traffic.

Amen to that. some parts may feel a bit reminiscent of a third world

I lived in Detroit from '85 to '92 and never had many problems. Same as
Dharma, my buddy's car was broken into and our jackets were stolen (cell
phones and radio left intact) while we were at the old Currency Exchange a
back in '96. My Car was broken into back in '91, but otherwise, nothing
eventful.

True there are som areas of the city that I wouldn't hang out in (Cass/MLK
Blvd area, Warren Ave/23rd, ect...), but that goes for any major city
across the globe.

Fear not travelers, tha D is a cool place to be.

RE: [313] DEMF 2K1 ?!?

2001-02-06 Thread Carissa Tintinalli
Haha, I'm from Windsor, and actually live right by the bridge so it only
takes me 10 minutes to get to Hart Plaza. But last year I got a room at the
Renaissance Centre. It was just a lot more convenient than crossing the
border everyday, especially considering between the festival and dozens of
afterparties, there really ouldn't even be time to do that.

As for being scared of Detroit, Windsor has a lower drinking age and is
swarmed by thousands of out of control Americans every weekend, so Detroit
might actually be less chaotic than Windsor :)

Also, being Australian, staying in Canada, and crossing the border to the
U.S. every day for the festival may cause them delays and hassles at the
border, so it probably isn't worth the trouble for them to stay in Windsor.

2001-02-06 Thread Carissa Tintinalli
When I checked the rates at the 3 hotels in the area last year, the
Ponchartrain was the most expensive at around $150 US for a double room. he
other one (I think it's called Courtyard or something) was around $130,
and the Marriot in the Renaisance Center was on $99.00.

From: diana potts [EMAIL PROTECTED]

that's rediculous. If they stay in Windsor they'll
have to deal with tunnel traffic and customs every day
.If they stay at the Ponchatrain (spelling?) they'll
be with in spitting distance of everything or even at
the RenCen.

Further the vibe that the DEMF is there to convey and
stay in Detroit.Book their rooms soon.

Detroit is a place to live in like any other big city. Residents obviously
have their run ins with problems, but in all honesty, things have gotten
much better. I moved out of the area due to my father getting a different
job in a very different locationfrom Detroit to the thumb area (you ever
heard of Frankenmuth?!?!)...for y'all that know, the two don't compare in
any aspect.
Also, people should stay wise of city statistics. Ever look at crime and
murder rates for Flint or Saginaw? These cities have their merit, but
still, I wouldn't want such an event as the DEMF to be held, under a
different name of course, in either of the two. For such small cities, they
just keep gettin meaner and meaner
I don't know where this all came from...I am sick today, and I had to do
something.

 My two cents,

A lot of the Prescription records don't have titles
from what I can tell, and even the ones that do don't
always have song titles. Basically, there was a good
deal of redundancy in the earlier releases, like I
think I have about 6 or 7 versions of I Feel the
Rhythm spread out across the releases up through
maybe 111? 100-111 were the earlier releases, and
after that they seemed to get less redundant. That
said, there's something uniquely valuable on each of
the records that will make you want them all. I think
I have the entire catalog from when they were under
Cajual, but I'm really not sure. I get the feeling
there may not be a discog due to the lack of info on
the records.

The Cajual website is still down, so no clarification
there. I'll try and piece together some Prescription
Essentials sooner or later. Can't promise it
immediately though.
