Re: [313] the Music Institute
Dan LKS- it doesn't help the 1315/1515 confusion factor that Chris J. (like i can spell a last name with two nonsequential zs in it!), who owns 1515, was also around parties way *before* 1315 hosted the MI (which was two blocks away). Dan's book hits on that relationship. NRR: The opera house parking garage sits on a block between both locations, accounting for all the 14xx addresses, including a people mover station, a printshop, and a wall street journal subscription delivery pick-up location. I worked in two of these businesses at one time or another. RE: [313] chris gray / deep4life; brett dancer
listening to chris's emotional distortion LP this morning, wondering what has he been up to, and deep4life, have there been any exceptional releases i should look out for? Yeah, a couple. :) Actually all of the deep4life's have been really good, I think that they're up to number 10 or so now. There have been EPs and mini-LPs from Chris Gray, Ricardo Dias, Sweet Abraham, Darand Land and a couple of others. All are very good, most are quite original. The best chris gray release IMO would have to be the moonchildren EP, it's one of the first few and it is in the same league as 'emotional distortion'. There has also been a CD compilation called 'the deeper side of the internet', which featured songs from a lot of obscure artists known to chris through the internet. Very nice. also brett dancer, was really interesting to read about his hookup snip are there other amazing songs like cosmic vibes in his back catalog? Yep - check out Trackmode records. That's Brett's label, as you know the vinyl of 'emotional distortion' was released on Trackmode a while back. Some essential Brett Dancer would have to be the Melodic Communications EP (I think that's what it's called). It's hot. -Dave __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! You don#8217;t have to be an academic to know that the civil-rights movement of the 1950s and #8217;60s is one of the most deeply complicated chapters in American history. Likewise, you need only a passing knowledge of this chapter to know that black music provided a crucial ROLE blocked by the governement, the establishment, the institutional economy, the media, and so on since then. But to take on the daunting task of definitively contextualizing the relationship between these two movements, you#8217;d likely have to be an academic and sadist. So when we hear and read that there are also black-related subjects in the music, in artwork, in lyrics and in interviews, I would think this is quite a good place to talk and learn about some of the background of this art - and so I will repeat this here - Just take a title of a record like - Ebonics - by Theo Parrish - the subject is in the title - you can hear the vocal-samples directly dedicated to the subject Now just count the postings done here about record-numbers and id´s of Mr. Parrish´s records and mixes (which is great) - but now put this amount against the number of people talking about the record-titles, the meanings of his art some including black related subjects- you come up with a number 100:0 = 100-mixes vs 0-messages ? now have you ever heard of a simple phenomenon called silent majority ? no no, not us here ?? - preaching to the converted ? how should I know, when I see the majority relation about 100:0 I would like to talk about the black messages in the art - to learn and understand - because some music in music-culture is also connected with sending information with teaching and communication in various ways - I would like to understand more - 4 some understanding it´s good to communicate - and this is what this list is made 4 - to chat and learn about the music and art some artists have a focus on non-messages - want the music to speak without words - others mix the music with other things and thoughts that move them - but all the people pushing the black messages into the racistic corner, by calling it off-topic, too heavy or too academic to talk about it, or keep preaching on it´s only music are making the debate very strange and this avoids getting closer to the art - this won´t help in the deeper understanding of much music-art coming from Detroit - still thanx 4 the books - m planetz2002 -- LoveThemPlanetZ peoplez plantz peaze pluz m GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet. http://www.gmx.net - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[313] DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin
Slated for release this week, a hearty congratulations to those who will be accepting a committee position in order to help Carol Marvin keep the magic going. Way to go team! Your 2002 DEMF Selection Committee! Kelli Hand DJ Bone Alan Oldham Mike Grant Mike Huckaby Eddie Fowlkes Juan Atkins One can only hope that this group of lucky individuals will make use of this opportunity to further their career based on the efforts and artistic vision of others! Just think, Kelli Hand can do another volume of Detroit history, DJ Bone can earn enough to officially change his name to Mike Banks, and Eddie Fowlkes can continue to do whatever it is he does in LA. I'm personally looking forward to the added bonus that maybe Juan Atkins will have a reason to actually show up on time, if at all! I'm psyched!
Re: [313] any mention of Carol Marvin = trolling

Re: [313] can't we all just get along?
I hear the upshot of what you're saying, but many of us have weathered the race threads to no end. I think it's generally a nonproductive topic for such a geographically diverse group on email. Sorry if I contributed to the fray in that nonproductive manner. However, the Theo to race discussion is probably more like 1:100 here. I recall a link to an interview with Theo Parrish from a number of moths back in which he was very candid about race relations in the underground media, and particularly the way that Moodymann has been portrayed. [313] John Selway @ Filler - DC and next weekend for those on the east coast
So I just got back from Filler @ the Blue Room in Washington, D.C. John Selway played the last set, which is a rarity. Typically, the night has 3 (or 4) residents, one of whom is Richard Chartier, whose work you may know from Mille Plateaux, etc. This was also a Ghostly International promo night although I missed the result of that. Anyway... the night was titled Proto-syntheseis and was themed as an old school meets new school electro convergance. Selway played maybe 2/3rds old, and 1/3 new electro to a great crowd response. They were showing Liquid Sky throughout his set on the DVD monitor, and one of the earlier DJs even played a track from that soundtrack. It was a very fun night! I think I've heard Selway is originally from DC, in which case it's a great month for DC, as Stewart Walker will be playing here for the first time *ever* next weekend, even though he used to live here. We also have Felix tha Housecat on Friday @ Buzz, which promises to be very interesting at worst (those who've been to Buzz will catch my drift). Also, Kent Williams AKA Chaircrusher and Stewart Walker will be conducting seminars at Metatrack Studios on the Saturday before the performance, one on Reaktor (Kent), and one on starting a label (both). Shawn Rudiman is playing live at the party with Stewart too! The entire weekend should be solid. If anyone can get here , let me know and I'll try to make things feel a little more at home. Re: [313] DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin
I just read this post of mine over and realised it was ambiguous. What I meant is I think it's cynical to pre-judge the members of this board, everyone there is worthy, and has something valuable to offer. I think it's important to have some faith in their collective abilities. I hope everything works out. Of course, after last year, there is a lot of work to be done before everyone feels happy with things, but just maybe this is the start of that dialogue. Incidentally, any updates on when the film on the first DEMF is coming out? Or has it shown already? -- From: Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 Detroit 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 7:33 PM That's a bit cynical! Heres my $0.02. If you read the link to the various reactions you will see that Kevin Saunderson makes a very legitimate point: No promoters. I have always been weary of having a DJ/producer book the event and was hoping that Carol would do the right thing and bring in people who are qualified to put this together. I can think of at least a half dozen people who have worked their brains out in Detroit over the last 10 years who have every right to be on the panel. Having an all musician panel could be more about personal tastes of the artists than the event as a whole. I guess we will have to see the lineup and whether or not Carol will give the panel the freedom it needs to save some face this year. Rita from Pilot Pictures responded to this question at the Cranbrook seminar a couple weeks ago. It seems that legal clearances are the last stumbling blocks to getting a distributor for The Drive Home (www.thedrivehome.net). When you have footage of a DJ spinning at an event like this, you need to get clearances from not only the DJ, but every owner of every track that is being played. Ever stop to think how many tracks got played at the DEMF? We saw a 15 min preview of the film, and it looks rewarding (although a bit more hip-hop was featured in that 15 mins. than I expected). RE: [313] DEMF
Personally, I don't care whether Sasha or Judge Jules or whomever plays. I have always though it silly that Europe has big, 3 day electronic music events by the dozen and Detroit (or just America in general) had next to none. The DEMF has inspired more of this in the US, with events popping up everywhere. The DEMF, of done properly, could stick around far longer than the likes of the St. Louis Electronic Music Festival or others. Diversity could be the key to that, but acceptance of such diversity (in Detroit anyways) may not happen quickly. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, February 18, 2002 10:05 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] DEMF Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers Start of message text What gives everyone the impression that the festival would have the likes of those people on though?? The panel is purely to decide the artistic content from what I understand. Not to book or plan. DJ/producers are perfect for that. Reading this article made me think of the current brokerage politics model that defines much of black politics and urban politics in general. The model posits that the central way that resources are allocated to dissident groups is through intermediaries. There are a few problems with this model: 1. it presumes that the dissident groups cannot somehow participate in the system themselves to get benefits. 2. there are no mechanisms of accountability to ensure that the brokers actually work on behalf of the group, and no mechanisms to ensure that the party the broker engages in negotiations with keeps up its end of the deal. 3. the benefits usually end up being selective...accruing to the brokers...rather than general. The quote that did it for me was Alan Oldham's...about how their being on the panel proves that the event won't be commercial. Granted the comparison I'm making above is real close to a position I don't believe in--that techno IS politics. BUT anytime there are resources distributed, there is political ACTIVITY. And here is no different. Now at this point...I'm NOT hating. I just thought the quote was problematic. peace lks - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] can't we all just get along?
Tristan, thanx and respect, but sorry again I got some more edits about it and sorry again this is becoming another long one including my style of writing :/ - after you said the amount of race-debates would be much higher then Theo-debates I just made a check with 3127 of the 313-postings I ´ve got in my account - Keywords - - racism - 12 - race - 71 - theo parrish - 119 - message - 1148 - black message - 5 - joke - 51 - funny - 58 and - - fun is mentioned 440 times (which I think is very important too of course) but - about the debate - I personally prefer mails as the one from Arne to the cynical or many missing reactions, when he was saying that it makes him sad, when he he remembers (I don´t) someone said that whites are not able to make this music - this crosses another deep going problem too - a problem related to the reflection of the racism - I´m sure many people feel this problem too - but see - there are so many problems like this, cauzed of a programmed world - we have so much corrupt information - hiding in the subconsciousness - but how can it get solved and understood by not communicating about it ? yes, there are also phenomenans as positive racism, victimising, or clichees connected to the matters - but I used to think we could isolate the faults and do something to try to make it better by digging as deep as much as the music does it too - but somehow the debate always get´s stuck - maybe also cauze of my faults - but the list could be here to reflect that - we can break up the monotony of shit-talking by talking about ourselves some more again..cant wait I see - so instead, there´s a constant mood of: finish it quick , this is off-topic, this is boring (ha) this is too offending, this is too much about us , I think, this is the main reason why the debate stays in a dangerous mood - - even in mainstream the debate is somehow more direct and visible at the moment when you take DMX ..they don´t know who we be or Mystikal for example - .. you keep bangin me against the wall did someone see the video ? - in the end he´s knocking on your door do some of you really think it´s just the US, that would need a change ? Even in nations where race-problems might seem less obvious, though they are also there, just look at the economic markets and how the doors are regulated - keeping Africa and other country´s in a safe distance to the game of global capitalism (unless it´s about selling weapons ) should the 313-list become the big hideout, where we don´t face subjects of life at all, though messages are included in much of the art ? Should we only go for the amusement only - pick out the serving elements instead ? Most people on the list are in an age, that they should have passed the innocent mind of a child - grown up men and women - I don´t want to join a talk about 313-music, as if it would be a talk about Playmobil only pleaze keep on the messages - as long as they are out there - reflect, correct, edit and flame my faults 2 with knowledge and some care don´t take the debate out m planetz2002 -- LoveThemPlanetZ peoplez plantz peaze pluz m GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet. http://www.gmx.net - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

we can break up the monotony of shit-talking by talking about ourselves some more again..cant wait I see - so instead, there´s a constant mood of: finish it quick , this is off-topic, this is boring (ha) this is too offending, this is too much about us , no i was referring to the posts about favorite colors, careers, etc from a couple weeks ago. that is too much about us. this isnt a chatroom... race has been talked into the fuggin ground as well, because yes it is a very essential and important subject. i'm not sure what is being argued here. actually, i see nothing being said at all, aside from some quotes from mainstream hiphop.. yes there is racism inherent in all societies and it is deeply entrenched in techno. and?? digging deeper..?? what are the issues being discussed, i missed something _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

From: Kent williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] Interesting to see if they can get anyone to do sound, since they apparently haven't paid the bill yet for the last two years. Not to mention all the artist reimbursements that slipped their minds. I'm very curious as to why the media has not menchened this? maybe the city should hire a cpa? see where the money for the artist has gone. _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] Fwd: STOP PRESS NEWS FROM DETROIT
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: undisclosed-recipients:; Subject: STOP PRESS NEWS FROM DETROIT Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 13:59:23 EST FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE--ALAN OLDHAM TO SERVE ON ARTISTIC COMMITTEE FOR DEMF 2002 DETROIT-- Former WDET-FM program host, international DJ, Generator/Pure Sonik Records producer/owner and most recently, Pure Comics writer/artist/publisher Alan Oldham (also known by his stage name of DJ T-1000) has officially been invited by Pop Culture Media, the producer of DEMF, to sit on the seven-member Artistic Committee of the 2002 Detroit Electronic Music Festival. The committee was formed by DEMF founder Carol Marvin. Each member of the Committee, which also includes Godfather of Detroit Techno Juan Atkins and Moods and Grooves owner/DJ Mike Grant among tohers, will have the opportunity to submit the names of people that they think should perform at this year's DEMF, discuss reasons why, and eventually vote democratically on the results. What a difference a year makes ! says a visibly-excited Oldham. Needless to say, I'm honored to have been sought out and asked to participate. I look forward to working together with all of my fellow Committee members to help map out the creative direction of this year's DEMF. What DJs and/or live acts are Oldham planning to propose to the committee ? Well, it's a little too soon to divulge that specific info, but I will say that my emphasis will be on a few Detroit people like myself who were overlooked in years past. Also, my personal criteria and logic is that you must have records out, or if you're a non-Detroit artist, you must have recorded for or have some connection to a Detroit label. I'd consider lesser-known talents also. Of course, that's just me. There are six other very esteemed opinions to take into account. And will DJ T-1000 finally get to rock the DEMF as a performer ? I'm proud to say that I'll be finally taking the stage as a DJ at the DEMF this year. It's been a long time coming.I've played big European parties like Mayday, Astropolis,Tribal Gathering and Love Parade, but this is home. I can't wait to bang it. Also due to this news, Oldham's new artist CD on Pure Sonik as DJ T-1000, Neutra, originally scheduled for late March, will be delayed to debut exclusively at the DEMF in May. The Neutra EP, the three-track vinyl preview of the album, is out on schedule in late February. All other details about this year's DEMF will be announced shortly by Pop Culture Media.
