(313) end of the night

2002-12-12 Thread Matthew MacQueen
 well that wasnt very nice.
 maybe he needed a hug.

Nahh.
He just NEEDED to play the last track. There's few things as frustrating as
feeling the flow of your set lead you to a naturally fitting ending track, the
one you most carefully must select, to end with this perfect track to end a
perfect set flow -- only to have the very last transition or track cut short by
someone shutting down a sound system, (often because they lied about the end
time). Or worse, some bartender getting on a mic and blathering on obnoxiously
to hurry everyone out. Djs who play sets that go somewhere over time need
that ending closure, at least I do, when I've got (or so I think) the very best
final track to close an evening out with. When I read that I felt his pain. ;)

Matt

ps - would this dovetail nicely into other peoples top 5 tracks to wind down a
night? Some of my favorites, depending on the mood:

The Choice - Acid Eiffel
Mr. Fingers - Can You Feel It
Sun Palace - Rude Movements
69 - microlovr
Detroit Escalator Co. - anything off Soundtrack [313]

...and when you've gone completely off the deep end:

Yes, Sonar was an all encompassing set for me, but when he played Lost about
5 months ago he played a much more straight techno set than I had
anticapted. Many grumbled wanting a 'Body Soul' vibe, but I thought it was
well put together. How often does he get to play music like that? It's like
Mills, I would like to see Mills play a set of a different type and I am
sure so would he, but I bet he doesn't get much chance. You only have to
listen to the mixes he puts together on his electronicdir site to see what I
mean. It would be nice if a promotor gave him the chance. Maybe when my
budget is bigger I'll offer guys like them the platform.

 Hi Guys,
I played last week in Barcelona and Mr François K was on the line-up too,
he
played 2 hours of Hard techno loops. Well mixed, no complaint on it but I
was really disapointed about the track selection...
Does someone heard this kind of dj set from him before ???

 * I have to say he had to play in the techno room...and his set this year

2002-12-12 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I think he wants to be perceived as more than Body Soul, which possibly
explains the club's hiatus in part.
He adores Mills! And he can't speak more highly of Derrick, with whom he has
just toured under the Cosmic Twins banner. He likes techno. He plays here on
NYE and says he will play 'something different'. I heard a rumour the
promoter requested he play house and not techno but I suspect Francois does
what Francois wants - bless him!

End of the night -ooh - some of my favorite tracks get played right at the
end. If these aren't at the very end they are somewhere within the last
three or four records

1. Digital Justice - It's all gone pearshaped
2. Ken Ishii - Iceblink (vocal version w/Inner City)
3. Ian O'Brien - Dayride
4. DJ Dozia - Pop Culture (DJ Dozia's deep journey mix) - who ever did
the vocal on this (sample?) sounds a bit like Carl Craig to me
5. Carl Craig's Bug in the Bassbin
6. anything Afrobeat for a return to the roots
or
7. John Tejada/Detroit Escalator

if it's an electro set then it's got to be Kraftwerk

(313) New Copyright Wrinkle

2002-12-12 Thread Tristan Watkins
I'm forwarding this article because I think it's an interesting new twist on
the long-running property rights debate re: the Internet, which always
inspires some lively debate here. I 'd hope we don't have to go through all
of those 'I think you should be able to copy anything' v. 'Copying anything
is theft' arguments which have all been covered here 12 times over and are
probably unresolvable through a public email exchange. Maybe just look at
this article as a new piece of info in this tangentially relevent ongoing
discussion. This could affect the future of Internet radio. Basically, it's
just a good article illustrating the administrative difficulties of
protecting intellectual property post-internet.

ISPs buckle under copyright cases

The law is a (pain in the) ass...

Internet service providers (ISPs) are reporting rapidly increasing
incidences of take-down notices for copyright infringement material in
contrast to a diminishing number of requests to remove defamatory material
from sites they host.

As the burden on ISPs increases, it is becoming increasingly difficult for
them to deal fairly with cases where people or companies feel their
copyright has been infringed, or where they feel they have been defamed.
While ISPs have a duty to remove offending material, they say that because
they also have a duty to their customers, the current situation in which
they have to act as judge and jury is untenable.

Complaints related to copyright infringement now account for 54 per cent of
take-down notices issued to ISPs based in the UK, according to a preliminary
survey by the UK's ISP Association (ISPA), which is being conducted as part
of a bid to rationalise the process of removing possibly illegal material.
Twenty-seven per cent are related to defamation complaints.

ISPA is gathering the data to illustrate the growing problem in a bid to
persuade the government to publish a code of practice that, it says, should
effectively remove liability from ISPs. The work is being done by ISPA's
sub-group on content liability. Sub-group spokesman Mark Gracey, who is also
legal liaison manager at ISP Thus, said take-down notices are a huge burden,
with each case costing between £50 and £1,000 to deal with.

Anybody can put us on notice of take-down, said Gracey. There is no
standardisation of processes - a ten-year-old child can do this by writing
the notice on the back of a cigarette packet. At Thus, said Gracey, the
number of take-down notices for alleged copyright infringement is going
through the roof.

But removing content - whether because it is said to infringe copyright,
defame somebody, be criminally racist or break laws such as the Obscene
Publications Act, is not a simple process and can lay ISPs open to legal
action.

ISPs are rarely aware of the full facts of the case and could easily make a
wrong decision, said Gracey. ISPs are at risk of liability from the person
giving notice and from their customers. Do we take down the content when
asked by a complainant and if so, should we put it back when our customer
who posted the content in the first place tells us to? We are the piggy in
the middle. We are playing judge and jury.

ISPA is trying to encourage complainants to make contact with the person or
organisation who posted the material in question, rather than the ISP. But
there is an urgent need for a code of practice that would create a standard
form for take-down notices and dictate who can issue them, sad Gracey. It
should also address the issue of how and when content should be put back on
the internet if the ISP's customer is able to prove that it does not
infringe any laws. Rights holders do have rights, but we also have to
consider the rights of our customers. Infringements are not always what they
appear to be.

There is also the notion of a safe harbour for ISPs, to provide freedom
from liability, said Gracey. That's what we need the government for.
However, he said, any code of practice would take some drafting. It has to
be fair to ISPs, to their customers and to the complainants.

Gracey said the DTI does appear to be receptive to the idea, but the
government is still saying it is not convinced there is sufficient reason to
go ahead.

ISPA hopes to use the results of its survey to get across the fact that
there is a big problem, and ISPs interested in filling out the survey or
contributing their own horror stories should contact ISPA (www.ispa.org.uk )

2002-12-12 Thread Brendan Nelson
I record directly to my hard drive these days, and it's definitely made
me a lot more productive. You don't end up having to reuse media if you
get the levels wrong or cock up the first mix, you don't have to
scrabble around to find a blank tape if you've suddenly got the urge
to do a mix at 2am and the shops are shut, and having 79 minutes is a
bit of a benefit too.

I've definitely found that I do a lot of mixes these days which I never
bother releasing to the world at large, but instead just use for my own
listening enjoyment. These will often be slightly more experimental, or
just funny juxtapositions of different styles that I like...

My number one end of the night track is Drexciya's The Journey Home,
but there's also:

UR - Amazon
808 State - Pacific 707
Planet Patrol - Play At Your Own Risk
Dick Hyman - Topless Dancers of Corfu

Obviously it all depends on your set and the general tone of the night,
but The Journey Home is what I'd generally go for!

RE: (313) [313] mixtape of a different media.

2002-12-12 Thread Graham_Bergdahl

I was experimenting last night with two tunes which I recorded into Cubase
on seperate tracks, one being an Acapella vocal which I chopped up and was
laying over the other. The only problem with working in that way and within
the Cubase protocol is keeping both audio tracks in Sync. I matched the
Cubase click as closely as I could so I was still working in 'sequencer
mode' but found things still started to drift occasional. Has anyone else
worked in this way and found ways of syncing an audio track so it can be
quantised etc? I shoved the vocals into Halion sampler so had pitch control
but it's obviously still not an ideal way of working.

Also I have found a great piece of software called 'Restorer' made by Waves
that removes vinyl hum, pops and clicks if anyone's interested in cleaning
up their mixes once on the hard drive.

Sorry if this is a little off topic, I heard there's a more technical 313
out there if someone could let me know.

Thanks,

Bergz.

I used to, but I'd always end up recording them from MD to the computer
anyway (so I could burn CDs etc). Then one day me and my minidisc player
got caught in a rainstorm, and my days of portable digital music came to
a moist and soggy end! The minidisc player is now completely senile - it
is still alive, but can't do anything and the things it says make no
sense.

Anyway, it was then that I rewired everything to my decks go through the
PC, and now I can cut out the middle-man by recording straight onto hard
drive.

I record to MD as a backup while recording direct to HD in case anything

Personally I like cooledit pro2 as I like the keyboard shortcuts and 'save
selection as...' feature.

I record a lot of mixes direct to HD and I've found that setting the temp
folder of the recording software to a mapped network drive on a different
machine dramatically increases speed and responsiveness for recording,
saving and any post production. This can be especially beneficial with the
large files produced by recording mixes at a high quality. If you don't
have a home network then having the OS swap file on a different drive to the
one you are recording to can also help.

I use Wavelab Lite - not so many features that it loads slowly or is
difficult to use, not so crap that you can't do things like save
selection as. I have other wav editors but the simplicity of Wavelab
Lite means that it suits me down to the ground for recording mixes. If I
want to go and do anything fancy like compression later on I'd use
Soundforge, but for staight recording it's always Wavelab Lite!

Re: (313) [313] mixtape of a different media.

2002-12-12 Thread Eric Scuccimarra
I have been doing that for about two years now. I have a Mac G4 with a
Midiman Delta 44 sound card and I plug the record outputs of my mixer
directly into the machine and record to hard drive. My only frustration has
been that a CD is limited to 79 minutes whereas with tapes I used to be
able to get close to 2 hours by recording straight through both sides.

However some advantages of doing stuff on the computer that I see are that
I can do mastering directly on the computer. If there are any big mistakes
I can smooth them out, I can do editing, put on effects, etc on the
computer (though I don't do that very often).

Some of the disadvantages are that I used to record to tape and then listen
to the tapes in the car. My car doesn't have a CD player so I can't listen
to my mixes there anymore. And the biggest disadvantage for me is that if I
am spinning and like what I am playing I can't just hit record on the tape
deck - I need to go into the computer room, turn on the computer, load up
Peak and hit record. Kind of ruins the moment for me.

Unfortunately my computer room is now located two floors up from my tables
so I can't record to hard disk anymore so am looking into getting a
Minidisc or stereo CD-Burner so I can still do my mastering on the computer.

Most of my mixes are for my ears only and I record them and listen to them
at work. Occassionally if I like a mix I will post it as an MP3 to my web
site (www.skooch.com) and if I really like it I will officially release
it and send copies out as demos. Most of my personal mixes are just me
grabbing random records and playing them or just playing whatever I feel
like playing as opposed to a planned out set.

when the spirit moved him and he really was feeling the tune, off came
the headphones and he'd do the disco shuffle from side to side in the

At any rate, I'm jealous and would love to go to this event. For free

There will be a heavy 313 presence at Slices next weekend - it's
Saturday 21st December, and is happening at Public Life which is just
near Liverpool Street. I think there are three or four 313ers playing,
and there will be many more than that on the dancefloor!

the mixes can be found at http://www.microlovr.com/313party/.

the files are quite large because i encoded them at a decent quality and
unfortunately my server and adsl connection can't handle too much traffic so
please be patient if you do try to download anything. when i get a chance
i'll re-encode the files at a lower quality so that i can attempt to make
them available for streaming and also lessen the burden on my server.

Wow, this interview is fantastic. About this part--

I used to drive Derrick and we were really good friends back in those days. We
all basically hung out and lived together. I was in Chicago at that time.
Things weren't going well for me with Dj International. Derrick was delivering
records for Metroplex and he was like : 'Come back to Detroit, we have a new

So does anyone know if Blake ever got anything released on DJ International?

maybe/hopefully richie will put it on his website since there are so many other

and if you have not been to the minus website as of late you should check it
out there are loads of new mp3's and some videos. one of the videos has a short

2002-12-12 Thread joe ruster
i liked the MD route for a couple years, but was always frustrated by the
optical IN/analogue OUT. so i opted for a 'stand-alone' CD burner
(pioneer) - now i record directly to CDRW, then if i like the mix, burn the
RW to a CDR using another CD player. the CDR copy is now a perfect recording
(using an optical cable) from the original RW.

the downside is that copy cannot be copied due to factory encoding (i
believe this is the result of a deal w/major label record companies) -
however, you can always use the original RW to make repeat digital copies
(without the track marks that were so thoughtfully put onto the CDR
copy!)...another minor problem is the CD burners are very sensitive to
record volumes (not like tapes that can be pushed)...if you go over too
much, the result is an unpleasant distortion.

...not perfect, but not bad.

Re: (313) list members music and trance...

2002-12-12 Thread fabrice Lig
Completely agree with you Aril...Q1.01, Hood tracks,Vapour space (I like to
finish a set with that or Innercity goodlife/Big fun...), Red Planet stuff,
its really close to trance border, or completely trance, finaly whats the
difference, its good tracks and thats the most important...finaly there is
only tracks we like and other we dislike, depend of our sensibility, our
taste. If a cheesy trancy tracks or Pure hard Rock track can give some good
emotions to someone, its good too...I spoke to an Hard Rock fan this year
and before he told me that I've never imagine we could have emotions on this
kind of music, of course its different that what we feel on techno music but
it gives some pleasure to some other people and finaly its the magic of
music, everyone has a different taste but everyone can find is way...Just
look how big is the country music in U.S ;-)
Also, I noticed in another message that we said that 313 is the only place
where we can find good producers...oh fortunately not...there is lots of
other place to find some, there is sooo much

And finaly... As we know how much is difficult today to find a good
distributor for techno vinyls...who will have the good idea to create a 313
distribution ;-)

i love your music to fabrice :)

regarding that whole trance thing...i´d choose a proper trance/trancey
track any day infront
of a progressive track...which in my own (mark my own) opinion is way
much

cheesier than trance.
maybe it´s because of my background of synth-music but i love when a track
flirts with trance but
never goes over the line to being trance-music. i love that track hawtin
started his first demf set,
i think it´s juno reactor...oh man i was going nuts when he played that
track with the looong intro :)

i´ve been listening to several mixes of it´s more fun to compute with
kraftwerk all day (i really should
get something to eat) and it´s 13 minutes of good trance which for me is
something repetitive but not
monoton in a boring way. i love plus and rek with hood on internal empire,
i

love Q 1.01 (i think the name is)
with basic channel...what it all comes down to in any case of labeling
music

is your own taste and that´s my
or your problem, not for anybody else to judge.

peace,

aril

Hi Guys,
Who is not agree to say that if we are on this list its because we love
electronic music, Detroit techno or every kind of nice music.
Who is more into the music than the producers, label managers or djs
themselves ?
Who likes to talk about music more these people?
Personaly I love to talk about music producers/dj/labels I really like...
And where is the best place to exchange our feelings our reviews...
And we have lots of nice producers/djs/labels here...
Do we have to forget them because they are on the list ... NO
I love Stinkworx music, I love Delsin Music, I love Modarator Music, I Love
Groundzero/keynote Music, I love Aril Brikha Music, I love Iridite Label, I
love Arne Weinberg Music, I love most of the people music from this list,
its also why I'm here.
I'm also here because I'm a dj and Sometimes some of you are talking about
records I din't see or catch in my records shop and it also help me in my
quest...we are also here to talk about records from list members or not...
If you're not agree with that, I don't understand why you're here... ?

I heard a funny store about abelton (well not funny for the artist).
 Apparently
there are abelton software police that go to gigs and look over the
 shoulders
of artists during performances. If it's an unlicensed copy, they stop the
 show!

This happened to an artist in Berlin, Germany. Beware software crooks !

I'm generally typecast as an end-of-the-night (or 10 am, depending) dj,
although I think of myself as more the 4 am type ...

Anyway, there are a bunch of these over the years. Some of the best:

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Passenger (llloco-motion mix 12)
Boiling Point - I Am
Model 500 - Ocean to Ocean
Dubtribe Sound System - Do It Now
Orbital - Impact (or anything on the 'brown album' really)
Alice Coltrane - Firebird

i now use the crack on my laptop. there's been times where i've had to
reinstall software before a show, and don't have internet access. it only
made sense for me. but since i paid for it, are they going to come after
