John Carpenter - Assault On Precint 13.. (is that right?) Essential

That's the one, the main theme is wonderful, also check the
soundtrack to his second film 'Dark Star'. Mostly sound clips, but
heavily sampled and quite surreal. The film itself is worth checking
too, one of the best endings ever.

What about the Blow Up soundtrack.. with THAT Herbie Hancock track?

The whole soundtrack is Herbie Hancock apart from a Yardbirds track I
think (?), the track you're probably talking about is 'Bring Down The
Birds', as sampled by Delite for 'Groove Is In The Heart'. Great
track, but frustratingly short. Another Herbie soundtrack worth
checking is 'Deathwish'.

If you're into something more ambient, check Vangelis's score for
'Antarctica', The Edge's (yes, from U2) soundtrack for 'Captive' or
Peter Gabriel's soundtrack for 'Birdy'.

On the Phillip Glass tip, his track 'The Grid' from Koyaanisquatsi is
awesome - totally blows my mind every time I hear it.

I think we should ban edits from the top tens!

Also, I'm no good at these. I cant even remember what I did last week, let
alone what records I got this year.
Oh, and some of my top ten for this year is stuff that isn't out yet, so I
can't include that either.

and they're in no particular order either.

this chart is dedicated to Maarten Beute, dis-illusioned with techno music
at the ripe old age of about 24!
Maarten - have you checked any of these? Surely some of these are worth
your euros?

Techno/House 10:

Juan Atkins I Love You New Relgion
Mr Shifter Ratios New Religion
Ross 154 Till My Heart Stops MOS
Max Berlin Elle Moi - Joakim Mix Eighttrack
Clashing Ego's Aminjig Nabere - Joakims Afrobot Mix Life Enhancing Audio
Carl Craig Sandstorms Planet E
Jamal Moss From Beginning To Eternity Axis
Ultradyne Cities In Retro Black Label - is this allowed? its a reissue I
guess
Kraftwerk Tour De France LP EMI
Metro Area 5 Environ

Anyway, I've missed tons out, I'm sure.

2004-12-09 Thread alex . bond
Hi

I'm going for the worlds longest topic title. Will I win?

However

Had a couple of records lately that sounded pretty cool, except for some
wally chatting rubbish over the top.

Example:

Blake Baxter Abe Duque What Happened : Well, I dont know, but I dont
want to hear your thoughts on it on some club record, thanks. Get a webpage
and tell us or something.

Kerri Chandler Back To The Raw. Nice fingers bassline, raw house track,
duly ruined by Kerri giving it the big one What happened to house music
that was raw dark and hard blah blah blah etc. Dunno mate, but for
starters you've been playing wally style bongo house for a while, so why
dont you work it out. DJ Deep saves us on this occasion with his edit, by
getting rid of the spoken word vox and leaving the raw, good house track
as it should be. This track is RECOMMENDED btw! Check piccadilly for
clips.

Can I put forward the motion that any one chatting over their records
should receive a poke in the eye?

Thanks

(313) A possible reason for so much off-topic...

2004-12-09 Thread Tosh Cooey
I would like to hypothesize that the reason there is so much off-topic posting
here in the last while is because 313 techno is no longer being made in an
amount worthy of generating a focussed discussion.

I'll wait for half of you stop seeing red...

I don't buy records, and rarely CDs. I'm just a hanger-on, so my perspective is
not one based musically. But as an observer of this list I can say that the
amount of on-topic postings as of the last couple years has gone down greatly.
Why? The most plausible reason is that the availability of topic to actually
discuss has gone down. Again, I'm not at the shops so maybe I am missing the
wealth of new 313 techno that is there, pardon my ignorance.

From my persepctive this looks more like a list of mostly like-minded people
sharing stuff that catches their fancy which is somehow loosely related to 313
techno. This isn't bad. I like chatting with people who I can share ideas and
stuff with.

But the question still remains: has the availability of topic to actually
discuss has gone down?

2004-12-09 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Mike Grant played a solid set for us when we booked him last year. I've
also seen him in Fabric where I enjoyed him less. But I think that might
be more due to the stultifying effect of that 'Fabric Main Room
Vibe/Policy'. In that case, it's hardly a roomful of headz. I can't
blame the guy for taking the money and running really (and playing the
records which that crowd might prefer). I mean, I've never heard a bad
Mike Grant/MG/Afrosyntrix/End2End record, and I have heard good MG
sets. If the commercial sets subsidize the good ones (perhaps like his
last T-Funk shun one by the sound of it) and some good records, then
it's fine by me. Mike Grant does Music full time, as far as I know.

Agreed but..

i'd be happy to discuss dj bone or gary martin or any other of the
more 'electric' releases coming from the d tho. both of whom have had
some great releases this year.

just had a thought: maybe the fact that UR have gone off the boil in

lack of focus?

Well i still love most of the UR releases :) but besides that. There
has been enough detroit techno, only no one hardly mentions it on this
list. People keep on discussing house no one hardly ever mention
Puzzlebox releases here or Tunnel 7 or that new label Plan A etc.
There is still a lot of good techno coming out lately. Almost no one

100% pure (yes back in business).

2004-12-09 Thread MTAURIELLO
thanks for all the feedback. so i think it' s gonna be
ken ishi, since it's been pointed out that he
probably won't come back to SF anytime soon after
this, and it's the first time he's played here.
aquaviva, i'll probably get a chance to hear again
someday. and i don't know about clubby house...
not quite my style...

anyway, i'm giddy because i get to hear both
matthew dear, and ken ishi, and maybe christian
bloch next week. i don't usually get multiple techno
events in one week way out here on the far west
coast of the u$a

take care,

...my personal top ten of releases from 2004 :)

1. Moodymann - Black Mahogani 3-LP [ Peacefrog ]
(probably the most rememberable release of 2004?!?!)

2. 3 Chairs - LP - [ 3 Chairs ]
(proper quality deep house from the D + much more than just
loops ;) )

3. Moodymann - Untitled [ KDJ 16 ]
(too underated release from the mann)

4. Theo Parrish - Twin Cities [ Harmonie Park 007 ]
(oh my god, THAT's Theo)

5. C2C4 - Specimen 4, 5 6 [ Moxie 004 ]
(... especially that Carl Craig Edit of Hit'n Run!!!)

6. Kenny Dixon Jr. - Should've Known [ Private Collection ]
(... just unique)

7. Kenny Dixon Jr. vs. Mike Huckaby (Picture Disc) [ Deep
Transportation
02 ]
(ok u got it, I'm a KDJ nerd, hehehe - but this a beautiful
record and
great tracks!)

8. Mike Clark - Disco Re-Edits [ Whitelabel ]
(...uhhh yeah)

9. Classic Series Vol. 1 [ Funky Chocolate 09 ]
(... I'm the baddest bitch MOODYMANN MIX!!!)

10. Omar S 02
(... delicious!)

i have all of those so you know i agree. i just didnt count edits
and reissues so thats why a bunch of those werent on my list. the
theo on harmonie park was on my top 10 from last year which is why
it wasnt there this year. and i totally forgot about KDJ 16 that
record is the business. good choices though.

(313) Soundtracks/Off Topicness

2004-12-09 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I think I am probably one of the main culprits here but I always think my
things are somehow relevant. ;)
Seriously though many of the DJ/producers listen to (and are so influenced
by) a very wide band of music, so it's hard to delineate.
This soundtrack topic has been inspired by an excellent QA session with
Jeff Mills for Three Ages (which I still need to summarise when I can here!)
and an excellent interview with Philip Glass on soundtracks in the new ABC
magazine Limelight (Aussies should check) which raised some similar issues.
One thing I may have mentioned is that before Metropolis Mills recorded a
soundtrack of his own for Bladerunner which remains in the Axis vaults but
would be fascinating to hear I think.
Also he has made a record called The Healing Channel which was inspired by a
TV channel in Japan and is calming music. Some may recall many years ago
Mike Banks talking of frequencies and their effect on the brain (I can't
recall where I read this) and it's something that Mills seems to be
exploring with this project. He has played it in a spa to text its affect.
I posted my last Mills interview on www.inthemix.com.au if anyone wants to
know more about Three Ages (this story was done before I saw the project).

(313) Exploration of Frequencies/Rhythms (was Re: (313) Soundtracks/Off Topicness)

2004-12-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Cyclone, you need to listen to the recent interview with Mike Banks on Liz
Copeland's show in Detroit... He talks for about ten minutes on the whole idea
of experimentation with frequencies and their effect on humans, in relation to
early UR when both he and Jeff Mills were collaborating in this
experimentation. He mentions how he would play a particular jazz chord on the
guitar and Jeff would hear it and get excited, asking him what it was - and
Mike would say, That's the chord they play near the end of a funeral service,
right before they shut the casket...

Actually, I got incredibly excited when MB started talking on this subject. I
ALWAYS suspected this from when I had first heard some of Mills' music - I was
more into experimental jazz than techno at the time. But I got this feeling
that there really was something intangible that was interesting about the
music, and I began to wonder if different frequencies and rhythms might effect
the brain in specific ways. Like it was an update of the techniques that
tribal societies used to bring about particular brain states during rituals,
but in a more controlled and technological fashion.

Also, although I am not a drummer I have had some lessons with jazz drummer
Billy Hart, an amazing musician who has performed with Pharoah Sanders and
Herbie Hancock, among others. Mr. Hart has some fascinating ideas on the
history and genealogy of rhythms, and he is particularly interested in
exploring the idea the idea that there might be certain rhythms appropriate to
dancing, some that are specifically sexual, some more conducive to
spirituality, etc. I've always wondered if this is only cultural or if there
might be aspect to this, like the possibility that exposure to different
rhythms and tempos can have cause specific brain states. When I started
getting into techno, I thought of it as a way to experiment with this idea by
exploring particular rhythms for long stretches of time. I still think that is
a pretty fascinating idea.

Do you know if this got a release? Can't find it on discogs, though
of course that doesn't mean it's not there...

Hey KJ.

Well. point taken.

I thought I banged on about that 154 lp enough! Owww. The Sun What more
can I say? It would have been in my top ten, but only one track by each
artist was my rule. But anyway, you're right. But there's things you gotta
remember. Like being where you are I think its better for getting good deep
techno records on small labels. So us guys are relying on you, so why didnt
you post more about them? !!! Ok, we're quite spoiled here in Manchester,
but it aint that good for this sorta stuff.. I was hunting about in Manc
for those eargasmic things the other day, no where had 'em... Also labels
like delsin, nwaq, mos, downlow, the rachmad labels etc only really just
started filtering through. If you can't order from the net, you miss
out..(or used to). I guess its even worse for the majority of subscribers
to this list. So, anyway, I'm blaming all the lack of techno talk on you.

; )

teehee only kiddin. but you know what I mean right?!
