John Carpenter - Assault On Precint 13.. (is that right?) Essential That's the one, the main theme is wonderful, also check the soundtrack to his second film 'Dark Star'. Mostly sound clips, but heavily sampled and quite surreal. The film itself is worth checking too, one of the best endings ever. What about the Blow Up soundtrack.. with THAT Herbie Hancock track? The whole soundtrack is Herbie Hancock apart from a Yardbirds track I think (?), the track you're probably talking about is 'Bring Down The Birds', as sampled by Delite for 'Groove Is In The Heart'. Great track, but frustratingly short. Another Herbie soundtrack worth checking is 'Deathwish'. If you're into something more ambient, check Vangelis's score for 'Antarctica', The Edge's (yes, from U2) soundtrack for 'Captive' or Peter Gabriel's soundtrack for 'Birdy'. On the Phillip Glass tip, his track 'The Grid' from Koyaanisquatsi is awesome - totally blows my mind every time I hear it.

Hi I'm going for the worlds longest topic title. Will I win? However Had a couple of records lately that sounded pretty cool, except for some wally chatting rubbish over the top. Example: Blake Baxter Abe Duque What Happened : Well, I dont know, but I dont want to hear your thoughts on it on some club record, thanks. Get a webpage and tell us or something. Kerri Chandler Back To The Raw. Nice fingers bassline, raw house track, duly ruined by Kerri giving it the big one What happened to house music that was raw dark and hard blah blah blah etc. Dunno mate, but for starters you've been playing wally style bongo house for a while, so why dont you work it out. DJ Deep saves us on this occasion with his edit, by getting rid of the spoken word vox and leaving the raw, good house track as it should be. This track is RECOMMENDED btw! Check piccadilly for clips. Can I put forward the motion that any one chatting over their records should receive a poke in the eye? Mike Grant isn't going to like that mate, I heard he was in the army too, bet he's pretty hard. I've seen him play in Holland few months ago, he's massive, I only didn't like his dj set at all, it was way to simple and almost hardcore techno (it wasn't 3 o'clock yet), sorry Mike, but I expected some moods grooves / trackmode vibes... (313) A possible reason for so much off-topic...
I would like to hypothesize that the reason there is so much off-topic posting here in the last while is because 313 techno is no longer being made in an amount worthy of generating a focussed discussion. I'll wait for half of you stop seeing red... I don't buy records, and rarely CDs. I'm just a hanger-on, so my perspective is not one based musically. But as an observer of this list I can say that the amount of on-topic postings as of the last couple years has gone down greatly. Why? The most plausible reason is that the availability of topic to actually discuss has gone down. Again, I'm not at the shops so maybe I am missing the wealth of new 313 techno that is there, pardon my ignorance. From my persepctive this looks more like a list of mostly like-minded people sharing stuff that catches their fancy which is somehow loosely related to 313 techno. This isn't bad. I like chatting with people who I can share ideas and stuff with. But the question still remains: has the availability of topic to actually discuss has gone down? RE: (313) Good records with stupid social commentary about the state of house music or whatever on.
Mike Grant played a solid set for us when we booked him last year. I've also seen him in Fabric where I enjoyed him less. But I think that might be more due to the stultifying effect of that 'Fabric Main Room Vibe/Policy'. In that case, it's hardly a roomful of headz. I can't blame the guy for taking the money and running really (and playing the records which that crowd might prefer). I mean, I've never heard a bad Mike Grant/MG/Afrosyntrix/End2End record, and I have heard good MG sets. If the commercial sets subsidize the good ones (perhaps like his last T-Funk shun one by the sound of it) and some good records, then it's fine by me. Mike Grant does Music full time, as far as I know. (313) Soundtracks/Off Topicness
I think I am probably one of the main culprits here but I always think my things are somehow relevant. ;) Seriously though many of the DJ/producers listen to (and are so influenced by) a very wide band of music, so it's hard to delineate. This soundtrack topic has been inspired by an excellent QA session with Jeff Mills for Three Ages (which I still need to summarise when I can here!) and an excellent interview with Philip Glass on soundtracks in the new ABC magazine Limelight (Aussies should check) which raised some similar issues. One thing I may have mentioned is that before Metropolis Mills recorded a soundtrack of his own for Bladerunner which remains in the Axis vaults but would be fascinating to hear I think. Also he has made a record called The Healing Channel which was inspired by a TV channel in Japan and is calming music. Some may recall many years ago Mike Banks talking of frequencies and their effect on the brain (I can't recall where I read this) and it's something that Mills seems to be exploring with this project. He has played it in a spa to text its affect. I posted my last Mills interview on www.inthemix.com.au if anyone wants to know more about Three Ages (this story was done before I saw the project).
(313) Exploration of Frequencies/Rhythms (was Re: (313) Soundtracks/Off Topicness)
Cyclone, you need to listen to the recent interview with Mike Banks on Liz Copeland's show in Detroit... He talks for about ten minutes on the whole idea of experimentation with frequencies and their effect on humans, in relation to early UR when both he and Jeff Mills were collaborating in this experimentation. He mentions how he would play a particular jazz chord on the guitar and Jeff would hear it and get excited, asking him what it was - and Mike would say, That's the chord they play near the end of a funeral service, right before they shut the casket... Actually, I got incredibly excited when MB started talking on this subject. I ALWAYS suspected this from when I had first heard some of Mills' music - I was more into experimental jazz than techno at the time. But I got this feeling that there really was something intangible that was interesting about the music, and I began to wonder if different frequencies and rhythms might effect the brain in specific ways. Like it was an update of the techniques that tribal societies used to bring about particular brain states during rituals, but in a more controlled and technological fashion. Also, although I am not a drummer I have had some lessons with jazz drummer Billy Hart, an amazing musician who has performed with Pharoah Sanders and Herbie Hancock, among others. Mr. Hart has some fascinating ideas on the history and genealogy of rhythms, and he is particularly interested in exploring the idea the idea that there might be certain rhythms appropriate to dancing, some that are specifically sexual, some more conducive to spirituality, etc. I've always wondered if this is only cultural or if there might be aspect to this, like the possibility that exposure to different rhythms and tempos can have cause specific brain states. When I started getting into techno, I thought of it as a way to experiment with this idea by exploring particular rhythms for long stretches of time. I still think that is a pretty fascinating idea. ~David -- Original Message - Subject: (313) Soundtracks/Off Topicness Date: Fri, 10 Dec 2004 10:08:55 +1100 From: Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 Detroit 313@hyperreal.org I think I am probably one of the main culprits here but I always think my things are somehow relevant. ;) Seriously though many of the DJ/producers listen to (and are so influenced by) a very wide band of music, so it's hard to delineate.
