Re: (313) have we run out of music?

2007-11-01 Thread dave cronin
Dead on, MEK.

I got dragged out to a dancehall/soca/dubstep/whatever night the other week by
an out of town guest, and it was a ton of fun, and there were some cool sounds
going down, for sure. and i have to say that i wrote off dancehall years ago.

I'm actually pretty excited by music these days. I agree with Tom's comments
about the revolutions coming from people fxking stuff up, and while I'm not
sure how much that is going on, I do feel like there is a new virtuousity with
electronics and grooves in a live or semi-improvisational context. It's all
across the board, and not really genre-specific. It's not new per se, but I
feel like folks like Animal Collective, Sunroof!, Matt Dear's new Big Hands
thing, Kieren Hebden & Steve Reid, The Books and even Soil and Pimp Sessions
are all pushing stuff forward in pretty exciting new ways. I feel like I can
even hear a connection to this in the 313 world in that new KDJ track and the
Terrance Dixon thing on Yore.

Excellent quote (or paraphrase) Ken. It sums up how I feel about the
subject.

Suggestion: If anyone is tired of music, take a vacation. Go
 somewhere
you haven't been before
and don't ask ahead of time "where can I find Detroit techno" being
 played
there.
Go discover the local flavour. Don't listen to what you listen to at
 home.
Give it up for a week.
I promise you when you get back you won't be "tired of music" anymore.

anyone catch that dj pinch set on mary anne hobbs?

(if not, it's up on themixingbowl)

interesting sound, and i like the mixed up rhythms. i'd certainly love to hear
someone play this style on a proper rig.

seems like there's something going on in this little area right now, with the
sleeparchive dubstep release, the villalobos remix on skull disco, etc...

there was a also cool Kano mix last year that had some ruff raga stuff mixed
with LFO, etc.

he and Dirtybird definitely have a following here in
San Francisco with the whole Kontrol scene.

in fact i got in a little discussion with some kid at

but i do like his sound and "who's afraid of detroit"

Re: (313) techno w/flecks of jazz

2007-02-02 Thread dave cronin
in a kind of kompakt flavored minimal tech jazz style, i'd recommend:

dell & flugel - superstructure
(on laboratory instincts)

and if you feel like chasing down something rare-ish, there's the jimi tenor,
mika vaino collaboration:

kosmos - kosmos
(on sahko or puu)

this one is a raw blend of proper minimal techno and jazz.

if you haven't checked them, some of the the compost black label releases have
both jazz and techno elements. i don't recall which...

and i'm personally loving the new(ish) dimlite album, has a bit of this flavor,
but is more of a sampler workout. totally brilliant, though.

Happy Friday everyone!

Doing a bit o'shopping and I'd like some suggestions. Would like to find
some deep melodic techno stuff - Delsin, Arne, etc. with some jazz
influences - O'Brien, As One, etc.
Something overlooked or not on a label that usually does that? Anything
that combines electro with jazz without being electro-jazz? Faster but
slower? ;-)

I've got MONEY people! Help me spend it!

Re: (313) Carl Craig :: The Workout

2007-01-31 Thread dave cronin
in the multiple "studies" i've read, they're typically
compared by phase inverting one of the tracks and
mixing them. in every case that i've read about,
they've summed to silence, which means the tracks are
identical.

i actually feel like i can hear what Martin's talking
about, so I keep looking for the reason, myself (I'd
love to avoid rewiring all my tracks through Logic,
because that basically means I'll have to buy a new
computer to finish my current batch of tracks).

thinking through the math, it seems that the
difference would either be a loss of detail through
the summing algorithm, or a difference in frequency
response. the latter seems really unlikely. don't know
about the former. they say its 32bit float but there
could be something weird going on there.

i know this is ot, but if any heads on here actually
know some science about this, i'd love to hear it.

(313) Stacey Pullen last night in NYC

2007-01-14 Thread Dave Pinter
So some friends were in town and wanted to go out and were excited to hear that
Stacey was in town for a night at the Sullivan Room. The five of us got there
early and luckily avoided the $15 admission (saved $75) The Sullivan Room is
closing for a bit to do some renovations, I think a new sound system is on
order. So this was billed as a pre-renovation blowout bash. There were even 2-1
drinks till midnight...sounds pretty good right?

The unfortunate thing about it was everyone who spun sucked. It could be I'm
suffering the let down from expecting too much. The opening dj's; Function
(Infrastructure), Victor Ridi & Fong (Minitek), Sleepy & Boo (Basic NYC) played
not one interesting track. The sets sounded like a mix of minimal tracks from
the sale bin and a few old Transmat and Rob Hood numbers thrown in because
Stacey was there. I was ready to leave more than an hour before Stacey started.
But I decided to stick with it and have another drink. (more alchol seemed to
help)

'Do NOT miss this rare NYC visit from the techno innovator on this very special
night.' Said the flyer. As soon as Stacey took to the decks, I thought finally,
amateur hour is over. Stacey started with a vocal sample of a guy talking about
soul. Good sign eh? Well that was the last bit of soul I heard in the half hour
before I gave up. Maybe it was that Stacey forget to restock his record bag
with something new and ditch the pounding NYC house tracks circa 2000.
Reguardless the New York University frat kids who showed up seemed to like it.
Hope that gives you an indication of where the bar was set.

I would have been mad if I'd parted with the $15 to get in, instead it was
rather sad that there is still such a shortage of challenging and INNOVATIVE
music in NYC.

Re: (313) different rhythms?

ok, i'll bite.

i totally love non-four-on-the-floor techno. per MEK's comments, it's what i
love about the more stripped down side of brokenbeat.

what are folks' favorite records in this vein?

off the top of my head, there's Si Begg's Opus EP (Tresor) and some of Inigo
Kennedy's gear like (I've bought a lot of his 4/4 bangers because the inside B
track has some weird off-kilter shxt, like Pumping Numbers on the The Bigger
Picture). Archetype's Glyph series was cool, and of course, there's the UR
electrofunk and techno-latin-swing styles...

what else?

Isn't the point that at the moment there's a lot of minimal releases that
sound like a lot of other minimal releases? And of course if you're not
super into minimal then the 'subtle nuances' that differentiate each minimal
release are kind of evasive...

I liked that quote from that berlin/party dvd "they'll dance if you bang a
spoon on a pan" or something along those lines...it sort of fits with what
MEK finds unfathomable about this genre...

i like minimal straight hats and kicks as much as the next man, but to me
theyre most effective when mixed up with other beats and rhythms. a minimal
acid cut sounds good all the time, but it REALLY sounds good when youre
mixing it into some weird electro or disco cut. too few people are out there
switching up the rhythms. detroit deejays are usually good for that kind of
thing though, derrick may, shake, and theo parrish are extremely notable
cats who will play all sorts of different rhythms and make the "boring"
techno beat sound so good because of the juxtaposition.

yeah. burial is awesome. for those not clocking this,
it's slowed-down two step with some basic channel-type
crackle and hiss (though the producer claims not to be
aware of BC). a couple of the tracks have some nice
vocal elements reminiscent of the early (i.e. good)
days of dnb.

but as much as i like it, i don't see how it's new or
revolutionary. to my ears, it's quite similar to
photek's modus operandi except the drum programming
isn't quite as intricate. (i read somewhere that the
burial guy actually cuts and pastes snare sounds into
loops in sound forge or something.)

and there's certainly some other good dubstep worth
buying, but i have to say that on my last couple trips
to london, i had to listen to a lot of really boring
records to find a couple gems. (though who knows--
those boring records might be ace on a proper rig.
it's tough to spot a cool subbass line over headphones
in a loud record store.)

it's all about the mixes anyways...

(313) HIGH TECH SOUL DVD

2006-07-18 Thread Dave Barnett

HIGH TECH SOUL DVD

Directed by Gary Bredow, HIGH TECH SOUL is the first film to to tackle
the deep roots of techno music and the city that spawned it: Detroit.
With Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and many more.

"Bredow's cast of alumni -- the holy trinity of Atkins, May and
Saunderson at the front -- fill out this tale with passion, pride and,
oddly for music of the future, nostalgia too." - Dazed & Confused

HIGH TECH SOUL is the first documentary to tackle the deep roots of
techno music alongside the cultural history of Detroit, its birthplace.
From the race riots of 1967 to the underground party scene of the late
1980s, Detroit's economic downturn didn't stop the invention of a new
kind of music that brought international attention to its producers and
their hometown.

Featuring in-depth interviews with many of the world's best exponents of
the artform, High Tech Soul focuses on the creators of the genre -- Juan
Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson -- and looks at the
relationships and personal struggles behind the music. Artists like
Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Eddie Fowlkes and a host of
others explain why techno, with its abrasive tones and resonating
basslines, could not have come from anywhere but Detroit.

With classic anthems such as Rhythim Is Rhythim's "Strings of Life" and
Inner City's "Good Life," High Tech Soul celebrates the pioneers, the

I purchased Blue Potential CD/DVD a couple of weeks ago, I also recently
picked up the UR/galaxy 2 galaxy compilation. both the jeff mills
project and the UR comp have restored my faith that there is still good
techno being made.
(Even though a lot of the tracks on the UR comp go back to the early
90's! it is still better than most of the rubbish passing itself of as
techno these days).

i know its preaching to the converted here on 313 but if you haven't
seen the dvd or heard the cd check it out.

looking forward to jeff's next dvd project. It would be cool if the UR
guys could release a live dvd of Galaxy 2 galaxy project.

Speaking of Recloose and cassettes - I heard that Recloose worked in a sandwich
shop which Carl Craig used to frequent. Apparently he got his break by putting
his demo tape in Carl's sandwich one day!

Can anyone confirm/refute this?

you picked a good time to visit!

Laurent Garnier's supposed to be playing live at Berghain on Thursday 18
May (it's not on his website though so not sure if it's confirmed yet).

Andrew Weatherall's at Weekend on Friday 19 May.

Theo Parrish is also at Weekend on Saturday 20 May.

also on the Saturday Berghain/Panorama Bar have Vitalic (live), Fidel,
Ben Clock, Booka Shade (live) and a few others - even if that's not your
thing you should still go as the club is one of - if not the - best in
the world. it also gets going late (4/5am onwards) so you can check
Theo first.

on the Sunday Berghain/Panorama have an outdoor Hardwax party with
Rhythm & Sound feat. Paul St.Hilaire, DJ Pete, Ricardo Villalobos,
Soundhack and a very special guest from Detroit who they're not
announcing.

Also, anything happening club/partywise?

Any tips would be appreciated!

Lifesaver's the best vinyl specialist - www.lifesaver.net

Stupido is a more general store - mainly CDs but a few bits of vinyl -
www.stupido.fi - check the recent Uusi Fantasia EP
(www.discogs.com/release/539143) for some great slo-mo disco.

DubJazzSalsa - specialises in dub and jazz (as you may have guessed!).

Dis 'n' Dat - a small store in one of the underground train stations in
the city centre (i forget which) - limited stock but still a few good

There are a few different types of live PAing. You've got an Ableton
live
arrangement/dub, or something like Stewart Walker where he uses an MPC +
his
other kit where he will have most of the patterns sequenced in advance,
but
he'll play some of them live on the MPC pads, and then trigger the
sequences
from the MPC as well (although I vaguely recall hearing he's using a
laptop
now)? Herbert will have most things pre-sequenced, and then he'll sample
the
sounds live. Then there's an entirely different level of liveness where
almost all of the music is created on the fly a la Ayro and John Arnold,
or
Shawn Rudiman, where they play multiple instruments or machines in real
time, have the seuencer take over for some of those parts, then move on
to
something else, only relying on a few bits of pre-arranged material. I'd
say
this last type has the most bang for the buck for sure. That Sendex show
I
was talking about on Sunday was sort of a cross between Stewart Walker
and
Shawn Rudiman styles maybe. Oh, and I was corrected after my last post
that
he actually had an 808 as well if anyone cares.

X-Factor finalists in 2004, the Non Stop DJs' energetic scratch routines are

ok, i'll bite. who would you book instead of these

have critical opinions, it's just that you could
probably put them in a more positive manner. even if
you didn't mean it as a personal attack, it kinda
sounded like it.

maybe think through the situation greg and the rest of
the kontrol krew are in-- they've been throwing this
night at a personal financial risk. i know they're
trying to book acts that represent the music they
love, but they also want folks to show up, so they
might book artists that are also a bit "trendy." oh
well-- it's still been high quality music, with lots
of pretty boys and girls dancing. does the trick for
me.

if you think that it's possible to throw a techno
night in SF with even more out-there talent, step up.
i'll come check it out. (but don't come cryin' if the
crowd is 75 chin-strokin dudes, all of whom dj or
produce.)

everyone take it easy and eat some friggin turkey
already.

hey now. no one says you have to love the music, but

Re: (313) Arnold und Ayro in SF + Konoko #1

2005-11-07 Thread dave cronin
Yeah, Misters Ellis and Arnold certainly were a hoot.
I would have liked a little more of the Ayro keyboard
action, but that was some crazy science on the MPC
(their fingers looked kinda sore at the end of all
that). Once again, respect to Fresco for bringing in
some great talent for a fun night.

So I obviously didn't catch Recloose, but did see
Konoko No. 1 at the Jazz Fest last night, and they
were totally incredible and quite techno-relevant,
actually. There was a drummer on a kit, a guy on big
hand-drums playing the bass pulse, 3 guys on the crazy
home-made electric thumb pianos (into Fender amps,
with distortion), a cow-bell/clave and a couple
vocalist/dancers.

The beats were in a very minimal polyrhythmic afro
style-- stripped-down and repetitive (in a good way),
with a lot of nuance in the timing and phasing. A
couple of the songs were over 30 minutes.

The thumb-piano sounds reminded me a lot of the the
afro side of Heiroglypic Being and the whole thing was
totally rockin. Check them if you can-- underground
sounds from the Congo.

(313) [London party] Soundslike Werk: Party #5 // Saturday 3 December

Accidental Records & Werk

Present

SOUNDSLIKE WERK 5

Saturday December 3rd

10pm - 6am

@ an unmentionable underground citadel of rave somewhere south of the river

For those that haven't yet punctured their Soundslike Werk cherry, allow us to
perform the deed this December. This is a party with no line-up, no address and
minimal promotion. In fact, we won't even let ourselves know who's playing and
where the venue is until the very last moment.

What we do know is that it's a musical smorgasbord across three rooms, with the
meat and two veg of house, techno and hip hop sharing a mouthwatering menu with
the cheese, port and cigars of jaunty electronica, and perhaps a few lashings
of jungle pie for dessert. The previous few line-ups, disclosed on arrival,
have included Matthew Herbert, Four-Tet, Kode 9, Patrick Pulsinger,
Modeselektor, Dani Siciliano and Anthony 'Shake' Shakir. And we have an inkling
that some heavyweight presences at December's shindig will make you soil your
rave-pants in sheer joy.

So whether the line-up stars Jimmy Edgar, Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Nail, we hope
you'll join us and chip to the chop, frug to the frick, and generally howl with
primal glee as you spend yet another sleepless night dancing in a sweaty
warehouse to the sound of Soundslike Werk.

It seems like L.A. actually has some pretty heavy jazz

Anyone else read the there will be importing support for iTunes? Wonder if this
will save burning and importing runaround.

Also is Beatport very 313 stocked? I've not taken much time to see what labels
are on it. Anyone got anyone good recommendations from that site?

One more thing...Satellite here in NYC was looking like it was going to close.
I stopped in a few days ago and there is a new dj supply partner in the space(
can't remember the name). The record stock seemed really thin and there wasn't
many shopping in the store. I remember it used to be crowded pretty much all
the time. Seems much more house oriented now, much like the old Eightball shop.
Buying techno in NYC is really a challenge now sad to say.

i have to say that i'm generally in the grumpy old man
camp: "i've heard this before-- can't you kids play
something new?"

but one positive side effect of the New Old Music
phenomena right now is the reintroduction of grit into
some of the music. even though most of the neo-acid
and neo-punk funk are waaay to clean for my taste, the
revival has had the effect of dirtying up a lot of
stuff. here in san francisco, the ubiquitous disco
house sound has become a lot less sterile and is (can
be) more distorted and dischordant.

another good side effect is that as much as i love my
80's punk funk, LCD Soundsystem sounds much better on
a modern sound system than A Certain Ratio.

In recent years, a tight-knit core of producers and labels have made Holland

RE: (313) Music I've heard this week

2005-07-19 Thread dave cronin
Since it's a little quiet round here today, here's
what's new my uptempo crate:

Henrik Schwarz - Leave My Head Alone Brain
This cool little groover features some dubby sounds (a
la deepchord), yummy organ, funk bassline and bluesy
soul vox. A variety of mixes range from pretty rootsy
to a bit more tech-house. Would work well the new Dark
Comedy bizness, and is way more dynamic and varied
than some of the more stripped-down Henrik gear.

Domu - Discotech EP
Yeah, yeah, I know I'm always on about Domu. This one
is pretty cool-- he takes his more freestyle/bnb
approach and applies it to house music. The results
are a bit Theo/KDJ, complete with samples all over the
place, off-kilter beats, and satisfying basslines. B2
is a bit different with a bit more of what you expect
from Domu-- nice detroit-ish moody pads, brokenbeats
and some dnb influences.

Kid Sublime - Bassment Works Vol. 4
More lowlands minimal deep house with prominent KDJ
influences. For me the real winner is the Side B.
Totally grrooovy with good builds and changes,
featuring a nice little vocal loop ("keep on doing
what I'm doing"). I also just picked up Basement Soul,
which is a full-length R&B/Soul album-- very nice, but
much more song-oriented.

Spymusic - The Start of Something Big
This 6 track mini album features warm, organic sounds
(electric guitar, electric piano), a smattering of
synth tones and nice beats ranging from house to
downtempo. The overall effect is funky and musical but
with a serious groove.

Joakim - Teenage Kiss
Well-moving vocal number with an acidy punk funk
groove combined with some glitchy sounds. B/W Volga
Select - Transe, which is kind of a proto-techno slash
punk-funk thing that would sound great in a set with
the Black Devil Disco Club records. Would love to hear
this on a proper rig.

Also loving (in the jazz/downtempo crate):

Dwight Tribble & The Life Force Trio
Malik Flavors - Ugly Beauty
Ammon Contact - New Birth
Luke Vibert - Lover's Acid

Yes. As has been amply demonstrated here in the past
day, there is undeniably a strong connection.

I was a bit sloppy with my earlier post. The specific
connection drawn by the author of the article was that
Cybotron was "inspired by Chicago house."

While there is a much stronger connection between
Chicago house and some of the early Detroit stuff, I
think it's fairly safe to say that Cybotron is much
more part of the whole electro/hip-hop/bass thing.

Re: (313) Re: Galoppierende Zuversicht or Nobody Listens to Techno

2005-07-05 Thread dave cronin
in some ways, you're totally right (and for the
record, i'm not in any way doubting that you know what
you're talking about)-- the boundaries of genre,
especially for the prototypes, are pretty hazy and
tend to be post-facto critical handles rather than
distinctions intended by the artists

but.

i'm not so much pointing out the distinctions between
hip hop and disco because as you point out with the
elloquent example of grandmaster flash, he was just
flipping disco cuts much like a house record ("...on
the wheels of steel" opens with the chic samples, case
in point), but rather different approaches within hip
hop (for example).

mantronix, arthur baker, bambataa,
egyptian lover, dynamixx II, etc were, as they say, on
some different shxt. and definitely a far cry from
disco at that point. (though there were certainly some
euros going there with the disco sound, or ymo, or...)

i can't quite put a name on the distinction i'm trying
to make, but it's something having to do with the
robot/mutant vibe rather than a strictly party thing.
ask Kodwo... he know's what i'm talking about.

and speaking of crazy mutant sounds, i just watched
"Brother from Another Planet" last night. how techno
is that movie?

jeez. where did they find that guy? that's like the
worst music journalism i've ever read.

the article is pretty much pointless, and basically
only good to point out how misinformed the author is
(techno ranges in bpm from 120-125 bpm? techno is an
offshoot of chicago house?)

ammon contact - new birth

thanks to tristan for the recommendation. this is
awesome-- been on repeat all day. nice techy
down-tempo gear with a dose of the afro-black 70's
jazz vibe. perfect.

Re: (313) SF techno Renaissance weekend review....

2005-06-22 Thread dave cronin
yeah, i was really suprised that Kontrol was such a
rockin party-- went down because i was intruiged by
all the Mutek reviews for Galoppierende Zuversicht,
fully expecting a bunch of non-dancing chin-strokers,
and lo and behold it was packed (to capacity) with
attractive people up for a good time.

THoughts on Galoppierende Zuversicht:

They were quite competent and fluid with their (huge
pile of) gear and did a nice job keeping the party
moving despite getting spending some time in the
broken-down, not-entirely-straight-ahead zone, but the
bulk of the set was pretty stock minimal tech house,
with some acid and microhouse sounds in there.

and despite the fact it was a fun, rockin party, i
have to admit that for the first three quarters of the
set i was a bit disappointed with the music-- i was
hoping for something a little more interesting/novel
after all the Mutek reviews (including someone quoting
Ricardo Villalobos as saying they were they best act
in live minimal techno right now).

...and then the last couple "tracks" were fantastic--
much more of what i was expecting out of the set--
cool arpeggios and chords with more of that raw
jarre/jamal moss sound, more interesting drum
programming and a great touch with the sound.

i wonder if the early stuff was pandering to the SF
crowd, or what, because i sure would have loved 2
straight hours of the kind of sounds they ended
with...

RE: (313) the orb on kompakt??

2005-06-08 Thread dave cronin
I really dig some of the earlier stuff that has an
almost broken tech-house vibe. There's definitely some
similarities to Theo (eg Dusty Cabs, etc)- both
rhythmically, in the voicings and even in the ways
that tracks build "energy" in a really minimalistic
way.

See:

Michael Mayer - 17&4 (KOM 4)

Sascha Funke - Safety First (KOM 19)

In terms of more recent stuff, I really like Justus
Kohncke's stuff, esp. "2 after 909."

And then there's Closer Music's "One Two Three (No
Gravity)" which has a groovy SF dub house vibe but
rolls at like 135, so despite the fact it's a really
cool track, I have no idea how to play it.

I thought as much... I can unterstand then getting away with doing boots of
the BUZZ and PHEERCE CITI records, both labels are defunkt and there would
be no one to complain about it (apart from a few folks and purists on this
list). But a Planet-E release! Such a classic album! Carl must be aware of
this?

(313) Planet-E Bootlegs?

2005-06-08 Thread Dave Parsons
Have the very same bootleggers also repressed the classic 'intergalactic
beats' album on Planet-E? Or is that an official Planet-E release? It is
available on the HTFR site but I have not seen it anywhere else yet. I have
acquired a copy and it looks suspect! I am aware that the CD has been
officially reissued.

ok, i know it's a bit OT (though GP def has shown some
serious support for Detroit artists), and outs me as a
bit of an acid jazz wanker (i'm actually pretty much
every kind of wanker), but I'm looking for a better
way to listen to some of these GPWW shows without
dealing with the total crxp BBC player (or Real, in
general-- I have a hard time getting the stream going
well).

i've been trolling slsk and done OK, but there are a
lot I haven't heard...

so, if anyone UK-side records em' or knows of a way to
get my hands on, i'd really appreciate the hook up.
(i've got plenty of great sets to trade.)

(313) FAO: London 313ers - Soundslike Werk, 28 May

2005-05-09 Thread Dave Stenton
i'm unable to mail the full press release through to the list, for some
reason (please hit me back if you'd like to see it in its entirety).

so, in short, here's the deal:

- Soundslike Werk is a collaboration between Werk Discs and Accidental
Records
- Soundslike Werk is back on Saturday 28 May, across three different
rooms, between 9pm-6am
- once again the line-up and location will not be announced until the
day
- previous guests have included: Herbert, Rob Hall, Mr 76.ix, Four-Tet,
Martin Rubadub, Sir Real & Brooks
- this time we have a very special 313 guest playing and also a rare
London appearance from one of Europe's premier DJs/producers
- entry is by advance ticket only and there are only 350 tickets
- tickets are eight pounds until 10 May and ten pounds thereafter
- email back for ticket details or call into Sounds of the Universe,
Smallfish or Selectadisc record stores

Re: (313) piccadilly records. Any good?

2005-04-22 Thread dave cronin
Back before the dollar dropped to 50p, I used to order
from Picadilly all the time and have found their
service to be pretty much impeccable.

Great selection, too. Generally, their "in stock" is
accurate for everything but the hot limited stuff,
which you really have to move on if you want.

(Kind of genius, actually. It's what always motivated
me to put together an order...)

Shipping's a bit pricy to the states, but it basically
comes out the same as buying an import in the shops.

yeah, that's pretty much the call.

go to the haight, get a shirt and then lose it (by
spending 4 hours and $400 at Amoeba). If you want
313ish mix CD's, Amoeba's pretty much the only place
you'll find a decent selection. If you want local
house mixes, you should check out Tweakin (in the
lower haight) and BPM (which just moved and i'm sorry
to say that i can't recall where).

frankly, i'd be a lot more excited to go see them if there was even
the slightest chance of them playing something besides the obvious
hits. why not play "europe endless" or "antenna"?
I saw them a couple of times when they played Australia (2002). And
have seen

'Expo 2000' It was always

the UR remix version ("detroit..electric..").

Any idea who is supporting them in Detroit?, (who should?) - Galaxy to

don't know what to credit the silence to, but it's
certainly not to a dislike or lack of interest. i
guess there's recently been a bit of slagging of the
stars release, but i think alex is prepared to wrestle
anyone in re: sandstorms (which i still haven't heard
as it wasn't released when i was last in the shops.
we'll see, i'm in tokyo right now and am headed down
to cisco this afternoon for a looksee).

however... during last year's remix and reissue
flurry, it was a friggin CC lovefest on (313).

i saw him dj in san francisco sometime last year and
his set was pretty much a compilation of the 2003/4
remix action including the cesaria evora, beanfield,
busted trees, which was absolutely amazing (for one
thing, all that bizness sounds just great on a decent
system). i think he also played throw, some 69,
demented drums, etc. he's a dead solid dj, and while
he keeps it pretty cool up there, he certainly knows
how to use the faders to get it going.

i certainly wouldn't miss him in a good venue with a
good crowd. (though given his name, he's also apt to
play at big nightmare clubs. noticed he was at
turnmills when i was in london a couple weeks ago.)

(313) [London] Soundslike Werk >> tomorrow night!

2005-03-04 Thread dave stenton
tried to remind peeps about this earlier in the week but don't think email
made it through (apologies if it did and i missed it!).

Soundslike Werk is a collaboration between Matthew Herbert's Accidental
label and the Brixton-based Werk Discs.

the party takes place in a 3-room studio complex in south central London
(Zone 1). the line-up is a closely guarded secret but you can expect guests
from the Skam, Warp, Soundslike and Werk Discs labels. we also have two
very special Gallic guests hopping on the Eurostar. oh, and a 313 regular
will be holding court in the Vangelis suite.

i know a lot of London 313ers are already coming but if there's anyone else
out there that wants a ticket you can still get them from Smallfish and
Selectadisc record stores for the remainder of today. from tomorrow onwards
tickets will ONLY be available from Selectadisc. if neither of these stores
are convenient you can email us on [EMAIL PROTECTED] (you can also
request location and directions through this email) to make alternative
arrangements.

(313) via FREEP. Detroit, videogame and submerge!

2005-02-25 Thread Dave Barnett

http://www.freep.com/entertainment/videogames/club24e_20050224.htm

Rockstar Games, maker of the blockbuster "Grand Theft Auto" series of
video games, is about to put Detroit on the map -- the game map, that is.

Detroit is one of just three locations to be featured in its upcoming
"Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition," the latest game in the incredibly
popular street-racing series that is all about cool cars and even cooler
places to be. This is the first time that Detroit will be featured so
prominently in an A-list video game. And it's not just the city's
streets in a starring role: About 20 songs by artists from Detroit's
revered underground electronic music scene are used in the game's
soundtrack.

"Since 'Midnight Club 3' captures the current scene in America, we
decided to have the game take place in the three cities most important
to American street racing: San Diego, Atlanta and Detroit," said Jay
Panek, game producer for Rockstar San Diego. "Detroit is the birthplace
of the automobile and where this country's love for cars originates. Of
all the cities, Detroit has the best appreciation for muscle cars, like
the '69 Charger, a personal favorite."

It's unusual for games to feature cities like Detroit in such realistic
detail. Most driving games focus on coastal cities, such as Washington,
D.C., Los Angeles, New York or San Francisco, or feature swanky overseas
locations. And though the "Midnight Club" series focuses on a typically
illegal activity -- street racing -- it's been largely controversy-free,
thanks mostly to the fact that it doesn't feature the kind of
antiestablishment violence (smooshing pedestrians, battling police
officers) that has gotten Rockstar Games like "Grand Theft Auto" into
trouble.

The "Midnight Club" series has been a consistent best seller, thanks
both to the production quality of the game -- it looks and drives so
smoothly you really feel like you're hurtling down city streets at 100
m.p.h. -- and the attention to detail in its cityscapes. Rockstar reps
spent some quality time in Detroit getting the look and feel of the city
and even consulted with top members of Submerge, a Detroit-based company
that is known worldwide for producing and distributing electronic music.

That said, don't expect a slavish reproduction of the Motor City.

"We don't re-create exact city layouts," Panek said. "They're
architectural caricatures of the cities they represent. The basic street
layout and key landmarks are there, but the cities have been modeled to
maximize the driving experience.

"For example, in Detroit, you can race through Greektown, but it won't
be a street-for-street replica. Unfortunately, real cities don't have
the sort of shortcuts and jumps we want to offer gamers. We take the
real city and apply imagination to it. For example, we'll make it
possible for you to do things like hit a jump and land on an elevated
train track, then as you continue to race you might have the train
coming up behind you so you have to quickly find a stairwell to drive down."

Detroit's techno music scene is what initially attracted Rockstar Games
to the city. The gaming company originally wanted Underground Resistance
-- a local collective that has been making electronic music for nearly
20 years -- to be featured on the soundtrack of another game, "State of
Emergency."

Rockstar games approached Mike Banks (also known as Mad Mike), who
founded Submerge and is a member of Underground Resistance, commonly
called UR. Submerge does just about everything: recording, management,
distribution, licensing and publishing.

"The founder of Rockstar Games ... came here when Mike Banks was working
on construction of the Submerge building. And basically, Mike Banks is
not really down for commercial exploitation of his music whatsoever. So
he gave him the big Mad Mike UR speech and kicked him out," said Ade
Henderson-Mainor, president of Submerge Recordings. "But J.D. Simpson,
our general counsel for Submerge, kept the relationship alive for years.
When I came on board in 2002, we were able to rekindle that relationship."

"So we said we will do this deal if we have Detroit in the game," said
Henderson-Mainor, who also will be a key player in this year's Memorial
Day weekend electronic music festival, which was announced Wednesday.
"And they said OK, only if you let us use the music."

Among electronic music aficionados, UR is known for its spare and
hard-driving beats and strong anticommercial stance. This is the sound
of secretive dance parties, not mainstream radio music. And it's not the
kind of stuff usually featured in video games.

"It's more mainstream, club and television dance music,"
Henderson-Mainor said of typical video game fare. "It's not underground
dance music. It's not like the stuff that we make. So they get cool
points having us being a part of this game."

All of the music was preexisting, not created for the game, with
