Re: [313] SL-1200 FAQ?

2002-02-06 Thread Michael Kim

here's my thoughts on all the needles i've used/tried:

1) Stanton 500AL/505SK-great budget needle, best for the money, sound ok,
long life, won't break. MAY have a hard time finding replacement needles
(everybody uses them). can scratch on them, can mix on them, they do
everything ok, burns your records slightly but not as bad as some others...
keep the tracking at 4g

2) Shure M44-7-best scratching needle, will never skip and doesn't eat your
vinyl, but they're fragile, and expensive

3) Ortofon Nightclubs-best sound quality needle, good skip protection, eats
your vinyl about the same as a Stanton, VERY expensive though. get the OM
version, the pretty ones have a channel go out occasionally.

4) Stanton Trackmaster/Groovemaster-if you're paying this much for a needle
get the Ortofons instead

good luck
Mike

I was browsing the net to find some collected info on 1200s, but the
Hyperreal FAQ:s are dated in 93, 94 and other material is spread quite
 far wide.

well since the 1200 hasn't changed much since the 70s, i think FAQs from
93/94 will still be on point =) i once found a good website, though i
don't
have the link anymore. it was when i was considering jacking up the
pitch

on
 my decks

Would anyone know where to find a good set of information about Ortofon
Shure cartridges styli that are used mainly for djng?

i use Ortofon Niteclubs on two of my decks and SHure SC35Cs on the other
-

i
find the ortofons are really really good. the Shures are scratch
needles.

they don't skip, but they are heavy and will eat up your vinyl like
nothing
if you cue up a sample repeatedly

well, Global Underground is probably the best DJ advertisements i've ever

I have to agree with you. It seems whenever a new
technology is introduced, the status quo immediately
feels threatened by it and does everything in its
power to slag it--methodically. The funny part
is that usually the bigger the stir about something
new, the more you can count on it becoming an
accepted new medium for creation. It happens in
both the audio and visual arts. A simple
example would be the camera. When the camera
first came around the painters of the world
united and screamed Blashpemy! That 'device' is
doing all the work! All they do is press the
button and the image is recorded!...

Now how many people on this list believe that
the camera does all of the work in the creative
process of photography?

Those painters were fools...

Back to recent modern times. How many people
here use drum machines? How many of our favorite
songs use drum machines? Would our music not
exist without the drum machine? But when they
were first developed the 'real' musicians, who
had been doing it 'the correct way' since 'back
in the day' screamed Blashpemy! That 'device' is
doing all the work! Just press the button and the
beats just come pouring out of it! Where is
the creativity in that?

Is it the device, or what you do with it?

Next on the electronic musical timeline:
The Sampler.

Oh no! Here is a piece of equipment that all
you do is press record, and it allows you to
replay whatever it was that you recorded, spread out across your
keyboard-- including other people's

music. Hell, you don't even have to program beats
anymore. In fact, even the users of the drum
machine, who's rhythm devices had just recently
gained acceptance as a justified creative musical
instrument were screaming, Blashpemy! That 'device'
is doing all the work! Just press that button
and it plays back whatever they recorded from
somewhere else!

Now, eventually everyone realized that while
the P.Diddy's chose to capitalize on the misuse
of the technology, the majority of sampler users
were keeping it real, and expanding their
creative realm the old fashioned way, through
inspiration. Except, maybe by now it was
10% inspiration to 90% perspiration, compared to
the old 1%-- terrible odds huh?

After the sampler what happened? A sh|tload of
PC's started appearing in everyone's home and
software based music creation avenues soon
followed. You could get a program that did
almost anything, simulated analog keyboards,
simulated digital keyboards, simulated drum
machines, and *gasp* samplers even. This wave
is very recent over the past few years, but
do you think it was a smooth evolution?
Absolutely not. Who screamed the loudest?
Come on, fill in the blank right here ___.
That's right, the owners of the samplers and
drum machines. After all, they had just invested
all their hard-earned money-- thousands and
thousands of dollars-- into their gear, and now
any kid with a home computer could jump on hotline
and have a complete musical studio set up inside
their PC within hours? They had just recently
--finally-- been recognized as the true innovators
and then the next wave comes along and threatens
their livelihood. Blashpemy! That 'device'
is doing all the work! Just press that button
and the computer writes the entire arrangement
from start to finish! Where is the creative process
in that!?

This is a cycle that will never end. It is human
nature. The irony here is that this music was
inspired by technology-- in fact, they called it

the one that's most prevalent now is the Joey Negro mixes. it's got the

the Negro mix is very clubby, imagine early 90's keyboards. the dub version

incident.

I wondered if anyone can recall the recent Inner City 12 as I can't find
its name anywhere. Also on the AMG bio for Kevin it cites Kevin as being
the

youngest of nine which conflicts with other biog info so if anyone can
indicate the source of this that would be great.

I hear that Slam's Virtuoso (nicest track on Alien Radio, very Detroit
influenced) is being released with mixes by Laurent Garnier and DJ Rolando,
which sounds good to me.

This is my first post for a while as I am very distressed over the US

Yes that party happened last friday w/ Hawtin + Joel Mull + Derrick Carter.
We raised 11K ;) It was great seeing the fireman dancing and drunk off
their

arses. Most of the men from Ladder Co. 11 died, which is right down the
street from guernica :(

Also, I just heard that Kevin Saunderson's benefit party last night raise
almost 8K!

Wow. I just saw Victor Mizo from Tronic Treatment in NY interviewed on CBS
2

NY about the benefit party they did at Guernica for Ladder Co. 11. The
segment showed Victor et al going down to the firehouse, eating food with
the firefighters and what not. I didn't catch the exact number, but
apparently they raised a good deal of cash for the FDNY. Good work!

Re: [313]online record stores

2001-09-19 Thread Michael Kim
i second (and third) the recommendation for Groovetech. great service,
great selection, good prices, can't say enough about them.

i've dealt with PlanetXUSA, they don't tell what's in stock on the website
but if your order gets denied then they will tell you which ones they do
have in stock. best bet with PlanetX is to just buy the new records they
get and don't bother with the older ones. if you search the DJ Shoppe by
genre, it'll give you the listing in newest-first order, and if it's less
than a week old you'll probably be able to get it.

I've had similar experiences with satellite - I had to wait 3 1/2 weeks for
a record, and then I was overcharged (on a debit card - which cost me money
for overcharged account - which was severely overcharged (not jsut $2 or
something)). I have had good luck with sixeleven records 611records.com
though they never tell you if they're out of a record, neither does
sonicgroove (www.sonicgroove.com) - groovetech is easily the best online
record retailer - as planetx (planetxusa.com) and sonicgroove start
charging

premiums for sought after records, and never tell if they are in stock or
not (though planetx sometimes did - and they may have changed since i
ordered from them 1 1/2 years ago)

You can also try large record stores with online presence - gramaphone
records in chicago has a deep back-catalogue of house (though I'm not sure
how much is advertised online) but they only advertise records that are
in-stock. You can always call them as well. Disadvantages to large record
stores include sales tax, large shipping fees, and having to deal with
people that don't want to be on the phone.

I've also found that you must know where your online shop is, as some are
in

teh uk (or even germany) and you might think you're getting a good deal on
imports, but you're getting charged for it in shipping.

Hope this helps a bit!
Cheers!
Dennis

no offense to anyone who may be satisfied with satellite records, but I
and

many other people I've talked to about them have had nothing but problems.
Problems range from over charging accounts all the way down to a month or
two long wait for shipment of records that should be available
immediately.

I've had the later happen to me the few times I did order from satellite.

I would suggest trying www.planetxusa.com for any online record orders.
They were one of the pioneers in online music shopping and have been
around

long enough to have built a solid reputation throughout the industry. I
only talk highly of them because I personally, as well as a good majority
of
their shoppers have had nothing but solid performance by PX.

just thought i'd throw in my experiences

I never had problems with this online records shop. They have big
catalogue

They answer quickly to email if you have problem or you want to have

On the other hand, I have never to control with UPS.

For French who would to order with satellite. Be Carefull, made not

The French customs stop 2 parcels that contains almost 20 each one.

required that I pay the TVA taxes)
I never had problems with small the parcels (less than 10 Vinyls).

 Richie takes of the
main room with accompaniment from Detroit's hottest new star DJ Magda.
Is Magda really Detroit's hottest new star??

Richie has taken quite the liking to her lately. To be honest, i can only
assume that he has a huge crush on her. she IS quite good looking.
However, i find her dj skills lacking immensely. She is merely and AVERAGE
dj, where 90% of the bedroom hacks in detroit could spin a better set than
her. Great track selection by itself a good dj does not make. She notice
her lukewarm skills even more when you see her tagteam, and the other dj
simply blows her off the decks.

There's nothing next level about DE9 'Closer to the Edit', only the fact
that all the people who have done it before him
have either 1. Never been noticed in the first place. or 2. Got noticed
 but
 have long since been forgotten.

A great many producers (hip-hop, trip-hop, breaks etc.) consistently use
this process to create tracks, Richie has simply made 31 tracks
in the same vein, segued them together and called it 'innovation' (His
 publicist spin I'm sure..).

I've listened to the recording alot lately, it sounds like an
experiment,

 no
flow, just tracks, intended for the mind to bounce along too. The
Gescom

 MD
was certainly much more interesting, this still posseses linearity.

Rich uses what seems like a lot of Perlon (I know two or three for
sure),
but in the most linear fashion possible. He could have made some
awesome

breakdown edits (to let the music breathe), or to give it an added
'wanna-bust-a-move' attitude, but instead he kept it pretty thumping
 (making
 it seem tracky,
 and boring).

Like the last DE9 this one won't be in my collection, though I'm sure
I'll

hear enough of it everywhere I go.

I thought that was the point of this release, to inspire volumes of
 mailing
list discussion attempting to catalogue all of the samples and loops
that
 he
uses, and what track they came from. Gotta catch 'em all or somesuch
 thing.

The DE9 record reminds me a bit of the Minidisc project that Autechre
did
under their Gescom alias. It was a collection of 88 small snippets of
 tracks
and samples that was intended to be played with the shuffle feature of
 your
Minidisc player. So each time you played the disc it would result in a
 new
  listening experience.

I found the new DE9 to be very interesting. I can't say that it's my
favorite Hawtin record, but I definitely respect him for trying to
take

  Techno to that next level.

   Hello.

To my knowledge there is no 'track listing' per se, because of the
 nature
  of
the mix. Lots of track titles are included as points of reference,
but
  the
order in which they are listed is not the order in which they are
 played.
There is also nothing that subscribes to the traditional
 track-after-track

   Makes sense, right?

I attended this concert. It wasn't really what i was expecting though.
Since

I haven't really had a chance to listen to her latest cd except for the
singles that have come off of it I heard alot of new material. It was a
great show although I didn't know that she had picked up playing the
gutair.

The Stardust/Holiday track was really put together well. I was rather
impressed with the Kraftwerk reference also. I also expected more dancing
and some older songs but oh well It was a great show. I couldn't believe
all the limo's outside on Sunday night at least there must have been like a
thousand +. The crowd was rather eccentric and since I took my mom it was
a

huge but entertaining culture shock for her. I wanna know though what city
exactly did she grow up in I heard both Waterford and Rochester Hills but
I'm

just curious.

Please can i HAVE A FEW MINUTES OF YOUR TIME , im shooting this IDEA to a
number of detroit promoters .

A BATTLE OF THE TECHNO BANDS what do you think , I think everyone would
really be suprised at how many artist who would choose not to be a part of
it for fear that they would get showed up by lesser known artist. If you
can

have rap battles and rock battles why not so that we could see the real
talent in techno music.

Re: [313] Richie Hawtin - DE909

2001-08-16 Thread Michael Kim
the Detroit Symphony Orchestra plays music, notes. every time i've heard
Richie on the 909, it just sounds booring. he doesn't really seem to
program any sort of danceable rhythm.

the 909 is a great tool to make a track, but it doesn't make a track by
itself. i'm sorry, but those damn handclaps and snares do sound old after
about ten seconds if there's nothing else happening in the 'song'.

the 909.

Agreed. I stopped going to see the Detroit Symphony Orchestra because I
just
go so sick of all those overused brass and woodwind instruments. You've
seen

one person play an oboe, you've seen them all.

(note: by using the detroit symphony orchestra I have kept this post 'on

Re: [313] Essential Jeff Mills?

2001-08-16 Thread Michael Kim
Mecca is Axis 004. recently been reissued, pressing is pretty good quality,
pick it up.

purpose maker is axis 011, and kat moda is pm-002 i think. in my opinion,
both are not so essential. good tracks but a little overplayed...

i'd look into:

growth - axis 010
the other day - axis 015
lifelike - axis 021 (i think)
skin deep - pm 008
if - pm 009
axis 009 + axis 009b
seawolf - it's on wpa (i think this was done by him?)
the other day compilation - axis something, it's on cd.

btw, this reminds me... does anybody know if sleeping giants was ever
released on vinyl, and what label+cat# it is? it's the 3rd track on the
other day compilation. beautiful beatless techno, my 2nd favorite Mills
track

I suggest the following:

Mecca (Axis I htink #8), The Purpose Maker (I tink Axis 11 or 12, not to
be confused with his label of the same name), Kat Moda (Purpose Maker 3,
this is the record with the Bells)

These three are my favroite, though I really like AX-001 The Tranquilzer
EP, and his latest release UFO. There is a lot of other good stuff
too, i suggest listening to them all if you have a chance.

Re: [313] ANyone know about Finalscratch (maybe OT)

2001-08-16 Thread Michael Kim
i really don't think FinalScratch is the next level. until it can do things
that normal turntables and a mixer can't do, then it hasn't really done
anything except make it a little more convenient on the current level.

i'm sorry to say this, but i think the future of DJ'ing will be computers
beatmatching for you... which will probably spawn even more uninspired
DJ's. but the true testament i guess will be track selection, working of
the EQ's, faders, cutting, etc., which is really what it's all about anyway,
right? there will still be plenty of room for creativity, and although most
of us hate the thought of a computer beatmatching for us (me included),
wouldn't it be nice to not worry about it? :) saves the 10-30 seconds or
so beatmatching, saves the corrections... could worry more about other
things instead.

i think that in addition to the digital sound flie there should be some sort
of additional information file... such as BPM's, accurate to the
thousandths, and a whole lot of other things that we haven't even thought of
yet, in order to do something new with the DJ'ing rather than just emulating
a fifty-year old practice.

hello-

i'm new to the list here, but the topic of FinalScratch caught my eye.
There

seems to be a lot of worry with people feeling threatened by new technology
and the repercussions one such technology may have on the vinyl industry
as

a whole.

times are changing, but I myself am a true vinyl addict. there's nothing
better than digging through bins and bins of old records and finding that
one

gem. and the same holds true for new vinyl. listening to all the new music
coming out, and then owning it. there's really no words to describe it.

which leads me to mp3's and such. in case anyone hasn't noticed, look at
the

number of CD djs that have just popped up over night. Napster, a new
technology, spawned loads of overnight DJs who don't take the time to seek
out the music...rather their form of seeking the music out is by them
passing

hot tunes to one another and also downloading them. One record i've been
seeking now for years is a Number of Names 'Sharevari'. Can't find it. But
do

a search on Napster...or better yet, Audiogalaxy. It's there. But owning
some MP3, is that special? It somehow makes it all less exciting
downloading

an MP3.

FinalScratch atleast designed a form of technology that allows DJs to play
the MP3 file the way they'd spin a record. And I have to say, that's
clever.
I'm all for taking it to the next level and things of that sort, but is
MP3

technology, distribution, and so forth the Final Answer

also, look at how many Swedish imitation records come out. they sound the
same, no new ideas, more than half of the Swedish sounding records are
garbage. i mean, do these records really need to be released constantly?

They found an idea (copying Mills) and made a formula out of it.
Of course there's no need for all those releases, but that's what brings
the

food on the table, it's no secret at all.

It's so sad the state of TECHNO, the early 90's innovative years seem light
years away. I mean who of the old guys listens to techno anymore? No one,
they've all gone house or to more sophisticated genres.

yeah. formulaic is one step away from dying. look at trance... totally
rejected by most of the underground DJ's now. a lot of these drum tracks
aren't that far off from trance, not by how they sound, but by how they're
made and what their goals are. trance is becoming big here now, but i
wouldn't be surprised if pop music spits it out after a few years just like
disco... maybe that'll be a good thing, so trance producers can start
taking their sound underground again and start making better tracks, and the
no-talent asses who ride the coattails of others' success will move on to
some other genre.

yeah, but how many other people here are sick of listening to 50 bad
records to find 1 good one?

That's why I called it the jungle, because you have to wander thru the
bushes and all the bad sh*t before you find a new rare species or the
golden

treasure:)

Michael Kim:

how about cutting down the number of bad releases instead? ;)

well i was just kidding (notice the wink sign), but i'll continue this
discussion for the hell of it... read on

I think cutting down the number of releases would eventually be
catastrophic

for this music scene.

Factories would have to close down their businesses when there wouldn't be
enough work (records to make) and thus cause the pressing prices go higher
and higher, making it useless to release this music on vinyl when at the
end

a record could cost you twice as much as it does now.

Only the strongest pressing plants would survive, and eventually there'd be
only 2 or 3 pressing plants IN THE WHOLE WORLD.
Not much choice there.

I think this effect is already showing the way average record price has
been

steadily rising in the last 15 years, and the amount of new dance releases
per month should now be higher that ever?

i think that's mostly due to inflation. i mean, nobody claims the reason
for higher burger prices is due to mad cow disease, right? higher cost of
operation, higher prices to the consumer. price of a Big Mac combo meal 15
years ago sure wasn't over $4.

i also don't think it would be that big a deal. i'm no economics expert, so
maybe my opinion isn't as valid as yours, but there are so many horrible
records coming out and so few pressings of good ones in comparison. why not
just make MORE copies of good records? i don't think you'll have problems
selling reissues of classics, look how fast Cybotron - Clear went.

okay, maybe it might take a little bit of creativity out of the equation if
everybody has the same records, but i've seen horrible records sit in
shelves for years. a pressing plant may be pressing it, but if nobody buys
it, somebody's got to pay for that.

also, look at how many Swedish imitation records come out. they sound the
same, no new ideas, more than half of the Swedish sounding records are
garbage. i mean, do these records really need to be released constantly?
if you miss one, you can find twenty others the next week that sound just
like it. on a big system, it's REALLY hard to differentiate between two
tracks a lot of the time because they're so similar.

(note: i'm not trying to say all Swedish techno sounds bad, a lot of it is
quite good, but you all know the imitations i'm talking about)

i really wish record pressing plants would concentrate on making more copies
of good records, and reissuing good older records and classics that they
KNOW will sell, rather than pressing the latest record that nobody will
remember or care about two weeks after its release. because people who are
relatively new to record buying, like me, can find the good stuff and buy
the classics up on sight.

It's a sort of Amazon jungle this dance music business; you have to have
as many species as possible in order to keep the ecological balance.

yeah, but how many other people here are sick of listening to 50 bad records
to find 1 good one? bad not as in missed the boat, but bad as in copycat
bullsh*t records that you can't imagine anybody (with any reasonable amount
of taste) buying?

Fabrice Lig mentioned record pressing plants having way too many records to
press. i think the constant onslaught of garbage records has something to
do with that.

Hey guys,
I just though about it because someone in this list signed by 'Save the
vinyl
I talked several times to some people from Vinyl pressing factories and
eachone told me that they are really really busy and always too much
records

to press.
Some of them are trying to buy old machines in Africa, East Europe... to be
able to press more and more vinyls.
In the same time, they need a serious maintenance and its not easy to find
some guys who are really into this kind of machines.
They are thinking to build new machines when everyone will be broken. (they
stopped to produce pressing machines several years ago)
So I think that vinyl is not ready to die !
Thats true that for each labels the number of copies is going down but
there

is more and more labels so more and more vinyls.
so... Save the vinyl pressing machines !
;)

RE: [313] Moby

2001-07-20 Thread Michael Kim
lemme remind you that the best things in life are free... cars and money
are necessary, and nice, but i don't think that's the _artist's_ intention
when he puts out his _art_ (not tracks) to the world...

anyway, enough of this sh*# from me, the bandwidth is getting clogged as it

kind of pain on a repeated basis...

which is worse?

being booked alongside dj supahcheese under the title the innovators

or

not being booked at all?

I understand where everyone is coming from on this issue, but as for the B3
being completely downtrodden is quite a bit of a myth. I don't see any of
them driving rusted out minivans and eating bakes beans out of a can. Last
time i checked, they were getting pimped out Ford focuses at cPOP.
downtrodden? i think not.

RE: [313] Moby

2001-07-19 Thread Michael Kim
it's not really hating on Moby/Oakenfold whatever... they can do their
thing, every type of music needs its mainstream counterpart, and the
underground for those who know.

okay, hype up Moby and Oakenfold to bring people in, but to not even
|mention| the three guys who SHOULD be getting the most love from this city
just pisses me off, although this is hardly anything new

got an analogy for you, seeing your email addy... how would you feel if you
came home from a war and your own local newspaper, in their welcome-home
article, mentions some dildo who cleaned toilets during his stint and not
you? same deal. it's gotta hurt... i know that the B3 is probably used to
it, and probably don't even know or care that they're not being promoted,
but i could never deal with that kind of pain on a repeated basis... so
i've gotta give Detroit DJ's who put up with this major respect

yes...promoted by ford.
the flier for LA has Juan Atkins name on it for that show.
the ad in URB has a whole little square with Juan, Kevin, and Derrick's
names in it.
i don't see what the big deal is with everyone hatin on moby. if i
remember

right (sometimes my memory is a little off) but alot of people consider Go
(not the frickin movie) to be classic. I don't think that Juan, Kevin, or
Derrick, would have joined on for this tour if they didn't have some kind
of

respect for him. or maybe they just want to see Outkast for free.

jeff

ps please note that i NEVER said i am on moby's dick. just shouldn't talk

I'm looking for the name of an artist that was represented by one piece
in
the gallery. It's a long horizontal painting, very architectural. In
fact I

believe the title is called Blue Buildings? I remember it was a
commissioned piece for a record cover for a Detroit artist (Duvante
maybe or
 T. Parker?). I've been looking on the CPop website for it but I can't
find

 it or the artist.

the poster was artwork for the new detroit escalator company album, but I
don't know the artist's name. it was really nice stuff, though.

TECH TIP: Protecting Your Gear*

Learning to mix records, play keyboards, run live sound and produce
tracks is all well and good, but there's one thing that we
DJs and musicians always seem to learn the hard way-namely, how to
protect our gear!

The most obvious way to physically protect things like turntables,
mixers, and recording gear is to purchase protective cases and
racks. This is a relatively small investment, compared to what
you'll have to pay to fix a broken turntable or a shattered LCD on
your digital studio. Remember, you may successfully lug your gear
without cases to 100 gigs, but it only takes one careless move at
gig 101 to do some major damage. Thankfully, ProSound carries
travel cases and racks in all sizes and shapes, making it easy for
you to armor up.
http://www.pssl.com/s/05.tpl

Another type of protection that's often overlooked comes in the
form of surge protectors and power supplies. It goes without
saying that you should NEVER use a power supply which was designed
for any product other than the one you're using. And if your
keyboard, mixer or workstation has a three-prong plug, trust us,
it's there for a reason! Don't ever break the ground pin off to
fit a two-prong outlet, unless you want to sound crappy, shock
yourself, or perhaps even worse.

On another power-related note, in these hot days of rolling
blackouts, it makes sense to purchase power strips with built-in
surge protection-or even regulated rackmount power supplies which
will ensure that your gear receives a continuous supply of just the
right power. These products also come in a variety of
configurations with distinct features, so check us out and see how
you can start protecting your gear today!

You might want to check out Music Instructor. They're a Berlin based outfit
that puts out some very nice retro-electro sounds. I just got their album
Electro City recently and I've really been digging it. Great vocodored
vocals over smooth electro beats.

Not so much electro, but I recently discovered Bolz Bolz. I can't believe I
never picked up on this guy sooner. Absolutely wonderful 80's sounding
techno full of soul and great melodies. I really love this vintage analog
sound.

1) i just gotta say that i think that the best laugh
i had all of demf was seeing boo williams getting
freak-nasty while dancing with some girl during glenn
underground's set.
2) laurent was absolutely amazing. i was really
happy to see him get some extra time and give that
shoutout to carl.
3) jak was absolutely the most surreal experience i
have ever had at a party. richie kept banging till
8:30. he had total control of the room. he
controlled the mood with music, lights, fog. the
sound was so loud that my girlfriend who left the
party early said she could hear the party on the 11th
floor of the ramada hotel (where we stayed). how
long has it been since richie has performed as
plastikman? although i can't confirm this, i got the
feeling that all those cd's he was playing was stuff
of his album that's coming out this summer.
4) i had a complete blast the whole weekend! i just
gotta say that back stage at the focus mainstage
seemed really disorganized. also...was it just me or
did the sound system seem to crap out monday

it (Big Corporation Lots of Money)... So what next year Sony will run it?
No

matter what, they find a way to control us and we give in happily? I am

receive, real f**king nice. Soon all of our music will be owned and

John Jelinek (Ford Mo. Co.) and Brian McCollum from one of the papers

Your letter was much nicer than mine, I think that's why I got the

that I should visit some of the Focus-themed activities they have

Can you say in one ear and out the other?

i just recently relistened to Dave Clarke's I Love Techno mix, and i agree
it's pretty bad, not to my tastes and doesn't show anything of his skills.

more, all around a good mix. he also mixes electro for a good 30 minute

Max, Max, Max *sigh*. What in your opinion is an obvious record? Hang on,
don't tell me - Zombie Nation! I don't know if you can pick up a copy of
Jockey Slut but D.C explains that whole episode in there.
Personally, I think Dave plays the best selection of records out of any
Techno
DJ I've heard. When I go to a club, I want the DJ to rock the dancefloor,
to
make me dance. I don't want to stand by the DJ box with a notepad saying
ooh,

that's an interesting obscure techno record, what an un-obvious choice.
You've gotta understand that party energy is what he creates!! (sorry
:)

Seriously though, even Mr. C who doesn't like D.C as person (who does - he
sounds like a complete a**hole!) was saying to me at Headstart what great
energy
he creates. Dave has some excellent, dark electro, brilliant Chicago house,
hard

minimal techno, housier record like Compass, basically anything with
originality that rocks a dancefloor. Dave is like a full-on, no-holds
barred

speaker assault.
What really sets D.C apart from other DJs for me though is his mixing
ability
(how anyone can doubt this amazes me.) Personally, I think he's the best
I've
ever heard. I've also heard D.C more than any other DJ. I don't actually
give a
f*ck what he's like as a person as I don't go to Headstart to have a chat
with

him.
Derrick May described D.C as having the biggest balls in Techno. Dave
also
won Essential Mix of the year for 2000. Explain to me how he could win that
if

he doesn't know how to mix?
The fuse club CD is brilliant, the Electro Boogie CD is brilliant, his
Essential Mixes are brilliant, nearly everything he's produced is brilliant
and

I'm sure his new CD will be, erm brilliant! : )

This oughta be interesting.

Suppose you had a friend or relative whose only exposure to techno was
top 40 radio (?), TV spots, and the ubiquitous flash intros on dot.com
websites. Furthermore, this relative usually prefers music with vocals.

What three or four 313-sensitive (loose definition) tracks might be good
for

an introduction to the current sound? I guess I'm looking for those tracks
that might do well in mainstream clubs that still capture the real feel?

All suggestions welcome via reply or reply all...

Well, I heard some Kit Clayton samples as well as
Monolake. I can't say I'm compelled to buy any of
their stuff. It sounds too experimental to me right
now. Whereas Maurizio, Vainqueur don't sound
experimental. They don't sound like intelligent
techno. They don't resemble Aphex Twin.

I know quite a few people like monolake and kit
claytonthe latest Clayton CD was much different
than what I've heard in the past. I remember he had
some good stuff on the Organized Noise comp CD, but
his stuff from the Nek Sanelet sounded different. I'm
not saying it's all that bad, it's not what I want
 now.

Both of them are very diverse producers. Monolake has not made a lot of
straight dance tracks ever, but my favorite of his dancier stuff is Tangent
and some of the stuff on Hong Kong. Can't believe I forgot to mention
Monolake... Kit clayton has some stuff that's more on the minimal tip - not
as noisey or ambient. Moles and Avacadoes on Background is his closest to
the Maurizio sound in terms of dubbiness but really more in the world of
minimal techno. I love his live ambience too, but I think it's better
suited

to the context of his live sets, where he really shines IMO. I wish he'd
release a live CD. His betalounge set from October is still doing it for
me,

especially the 2nd half of it once he gets through the noise. Seeing him
live on the Formless Form tour was a real treat.

For more of a beat treatment from these two, check out the Revenge of the
Nerds set at http://www.monolake.de which is the two of them live. You can
also hear most of Monolake's output including Tangent.

I fail to see the Aphex Twin comparison.

If only the Maurizio-type producers would start making
tracks again, that would be awesome. I want to hear a
bunch of that stuff, I'd like to have more than 5
 hours worth.

They have been making new tracks. Check out the new Rythm Sound that was
posted last week when it comes out. They've been making tracks this whole
time, just slowly. Also check Deep Chord for quality stuff that's pretty
similar (not to re-hash that debate).

Anyone else notice Psion on the thedrivehome trailer? Wonder if that'll
get corrected...

Let me say that I like the Maurizio, Vainqueur, and
Deepchord CDs I have. The Delay Product CD fits in
well with these guys too. But what next? I seriously
feel like there is more, but I can't seem to find it.
I've listened to a bunch of the Chain Reaction CDs
listed at groovetech, but I like only a few. Can
anyone point me to what they consider great examples
 of the maurizio/vainqueur/deepchord/delay_product
 sound?
Stefan Betke (correct me if I'm wrong) goes by the name of Pole and is
Mauritz von Oswald's follower... released a quantity of EPs and 3
magnificent LPs, the first (blue) may be the best, the third (yellow) the
easier to approach... He runs the ~scape label, where Kit Clayton released
his Nek Sanalek LP. I also tend to classify along the Chain Reaction people
the Sabres of Paradise stuff - they'd be somewhere between electro and CR
sound, maybe you should have a listen to Haunted Dancehall (on WARP)

Actually, coming from a 'journalist', 'Millsian' is a very fluid term - it
doesn't mean hard techno, it means what it says.

Also, people move on to new things. It's called 'growth'. :)

no real standouts probably but every track is usable in a
harder set. and as for emulating mills i just wish he was
making good hard music aswell these days and not the
rubbish that's been out on purpose maker recently.
lazy journalism (sorry tom) and done by so many, to
describe hard minimal techno as like mills, millsian etc.
more like mills plays than actually makes.

anybody ID that next track for me? the beat kicks in at 10:35.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the DJ Shufflemaster LP out through

I pretty much agree with Tom Magic Feet's review in Jockey Slut that he
emulates Mills very, very closely. It's OK but maybe not innovative.

Also does Ade Fenton have any material available on CD format (or even a
mix-CD)?

Final question: is Gayle San currently based in Singapore or the UK? I note
that she has a new release on Black Nation - Backbone EP. How much has she
produced prior to this and what are her productions like? Is there any info
on her online?

this would most likely, in effect, damp the resonances. in other words,
making sure the table is very heavy would most likely damp a lot of the
vibrations (although the bricks most likely would transmit a lot of it).

i say isolate the table as well as possible. while a trick like that might
be cool nothing is worse than having a needle jump.

I can make a nice drawing of this but it's actually true
I've tried certain setups where it came clear to me that
resonace injected from the speakers react different to the needle through
wood, metal or bricks.
just make shure that the table you place you're 1200's on is heavy with
lot's and lots of bricks

But maybe you can tell me something about th'm different frequenties the

Re: [313] vinyl: not for me; but mp3 cds are. your answers

2001-04-14 Thread Michael Kim

uhh, no. no, no, and no.

the 24-bit sound is NOT kept when pressed to vinyl, because the quality of
sound is only as good as the weakest link, and that would be the quality of
the vinyl press itself.

the speakers don't do any conversions. the D/A converter in your
electronics will do that (most D/A converters are in the cd player's
circuits itself; if it has an analog output (RCA, XLR, 1/4, whatever) then
you know the conversion already happened.

digital reproduction is 'nearly' perfect. the level of distortion produced
by quantization and filtering is so small it's not even funny. worry more
about speaker distortions.

what this has to do with 313 i don't know, but it had to be said. :)

actually, the machines producing your favorite sounds are producing AT
LEAST, and DONT ARGUE 24bit sound, sometimes even at 48000 or higher khz.
when this is mixed down professionally and PRESSED (NOT BURNED, DIGITALLY)
to vinyl, that sound is kept, because of it's format. speakers are analog,
and they must put out analog sound. therefor, when your CD plays, the data
is converted by the speaker so it can play. when you burn higher quality
music to a cd, the quality is automatically dithered to 16bit, sometimes
with adverse effects. the vinyl produces a sound for the speakers, that
digital can only emulate, and can for the most part only reach 16bit
quality. say you like the quality of the cleanest CD you've ever heard, now
imagine TWICE that quality! kinda hard.. huh maybe that's why people tend
to

go crazy to the vinyl

I think alot of the quality of the audio goes out the window after
digital
 quantizantion.

Something I don't understand here - so much music is made with samplers
and
other digital devices, so presumably the sound coming out is quantised
to
16-bit/44.1KHz by definition anyway - how can writing that quantised
sound

onto vinyl suddenly give it a better dynamic range / quality ?

I suspect there's a bit of retro-fetishism going on here (not that
there's

anything wrong with that - just that vinyl rules for reasons other than
 sound quality).

Debates r.e. the quality of mp3 files are mainly irrelevant at present
since
the primary point of mp3 files is swapping, i.e. you take what you can
get

in terms of bitrate. Sure, higher bitrates sound better, but most extant
files are lower bitrate. Since it's a lossy compression system there
will

always be a difference, and the louder the P.A. the more audible that
difference will be. Personally I'm not ready to make the switch yet,
though
I do play with WAVs off a puter.

Back in 1991-1992 a rumor floated around that if you colored the edge of
your cd's with a green marker, they would sound better. Car audio nuts were
buying into it until someone proved it false. When I worked at Jam Sounds
during those years, lots of people tried it and said to me ... the music
sounds the same, what's the big deal?

This is similar.

The data on a CD is still going to be the same, cold or warm. It'll sound
no different.

While we're on the subject, does anyone have any idea why freezing cd's

I
 just don't understand why!

Basically, you put a cd in the freezer for 48 hours, then slowly warm it
up
by putting it in the bottom of the fridge and then the top, for
something

like 12 hours. It makes such a huge improvement to the sound, try it.
But
 why?

Most people understand how a record player works, basically.
The same people have no clue how a CD player or MP3 player

hi 313'rs

You always hear names mentioned like May, Atkins,
Suanderson, Craig, etc in detroit techno. There have
been so many other producers that have contributed to
detroit tech with releases on compilations and one or
two 12 etc. It just interests me that u dont hear
much about these people. I guess the various names
used by single artists doesn't help either.

Anyway, my question is where r they now???!!!

I'll start with a Planet E compilation called
Elements of and experiments with sound released in
1994.

Mode Selector-F.Flowers

Moodring-K.Tertzag

Flexitone-G.Donald, B.Gillen

The Connection Machine-N.Hagemeier, J-Brandjes

Enhanced-T.Sines (KNOWN)

Hani-Hani

Quadrant-Quadrant

Paperclip People-C.Craig(KNOWN),M.Gottsching

If u have any producers to add or any info on the
above we will somehow solve this mystery.

thanx

of
classics - no Black Lives though :o( (or was that played at the start?
I
missed the first 10 mins) I think Bone plays quite similar to Rolando

I also
rate as one of my favourite DJs - good stuff! :o)

Besides the smaller stores in windsor and Toronto like songbird music etc.
which have good prices, I would use gearprice dot com. It scans the majors
for the lowest prices.

I've found the web to be just the place however, to find stuff second hand
and save a pretty penny, as I'm sure many others have. Some people have no
idea what they are buying or get a divorce after they've sunk ten grand
into

gear, and sell it in box for half off. For that go to harmonycentral
classifieds and other used gear pages.

Hope it helps.

do want all us white kids to leave the list? to stop listening to techno?
to
pack our vinyl up and send it back to detroit?

i hope not. and the weirdest thing is, after working for years as a
welfare

advisor in one of the most underprivilaged areas of the UK, this is the
closest ive ever come to someone accusing me of being racist.

and i only came here to talk techno.

if you have a hard time believing this, just think about women in the

With a tag line of: Ford Focus...Detroit Techno sponsoring a Moby
tour...what do you suggest?

Shall a Mike Banks or a Juan Atkins for example, sit back and let someone
else make his money and benefit from their efforts while they are
quintessentially excluded and pushed aside. What kind of juveniles do you
all think created this music and mentality? These are grown men and women,
with families to support and REAL bills to pay.

Are our dreams of financial success and acclaim to be kicked to the curb
for

the greater good? What the f**k are you all saying ANYWAY?

It is simply not in our nature, nor in the nature of the culture of
aggressive creative individualism/techno to simply lie down and take
a fist up the rump. Can we try at least to approach this as grown business
people. After all, 313 CREATED this business and now the majors and
stupid,

tagalong bad white people wish to exploit it and us for the sake of the
dollar.

I'm disgusted with the apathy being exhibited in this thread. Life is not
E

based. That is simply NOT REAL y'all. Parties that bring all the races
together are incredibleBUT THEY ARE JUST PARTIES. Party life and the
esoterics of the music are NOT what we are discussing here at all.

How would any of you like it if you busted yo ass 24-7 for 10+ years and
someone else got paid for your work. Would this not raise your ire?? Come
one kiddies, let's talk reality here.

A trance rip-off of Jaguar was just the tip of the iceberg. If you truly
believe in this music and culture perhaps you might like to join in the
fight for its defense and longevity.

Some of you will be the first in line to buy your tickets,
 but I caution
you. If this does, in fact, occur as it has been outlined to
 me, the global
family...and I mean the FOR REAL mugs-- the world over-- will
 respond. Try
to take over, white wash, distort, divert or dilute any of our
accomplishments or economics and there will be consequences.
 We are a force
to be reckoned with when unified and I cannot think of a
 better opportunity!

Or we could just ignore them and keep doing it better, action not reaction
you know?

What do people think of the Jet Set EP by Jeff Mills? I finally got around
to picking it up on Saturday and I'm not very impressed. Is it me or is he
just churning 'em out these days?

And now on to the song id. Preacher-style acapella vocals (in the same
vein

as those on Mr Fingers, Can You Feel It?) ending with and they (we?)
still teach kids (children?) to play house. Or something.

Thanks in advance. Back to lurking...

Re: [313] DEMF mills?

2001-03-30 Thread Michael Kim

i'm not about to put words in his mouth, but i remember him saying that he
REALLY likes to keep low-key in the place of his home. which is
understandable. i think his words were something to the effect of not
having people stop him in the street all the time after they saw him at a
gig the past weekend...

maybe not great for people in Chicago, but the man has to do things the way
he feels most comfortable.

I see this point well, and I agree that he should hop on those European
gigs to make money, but it would just be nice if he showed a stronger
desire to give something back to someone near to his origins. I regret
missing the Wizard gig at the start of the month, but in the end I'm glad I
worked harder to get to that Plus 8 party on 10/28 because time and again
I've seen Richie pour his heart into Detroit with no signs of letting
up. Jeff played for the first time in 10 years in the city that started
him? And that was supposed to excite us? I live in Chicago and I take it
Jeff lives here, too, but I haven't seen him give us a thing, not even one
performance, and there are plenty of places for him to play besides a
dirtylittlerave. ;)

I love his music and think he's a wonderful and innovative artist, but I
just wish he played around here more often, both to see him and for the
statement that performing in your home town or town-of-residence makes.

DEMF wish list -- agree with that Stewart Walker idea and would love to see
DJ Ferenc/I-F -- I look forward to the TBA. Should be a fun time! I've
only seen Kooky once (at the Plus 8 party), but it was phenomenal -- I'm
psyched for a repeat.

Cheers,
Dave

The way I see it is... most promoters in the US dont want to pay that much
for Mills.. in Europe... its no problem. Why on earth would he want to
come to the US to make less then he can in Europe, but then again.. its
not

about the money.. its about the music.. right?

Anyway I thought it was a good question. I think that with a careful
touch, you could blend our music well and maybe provide some real
emotion to offset the blandness of hands-in-the-air trance. My first
track would be the original Knights of the Jaguar. Then I would check
 out:
-Red Planet (Stardancer, Ultra Violet Images, Sex in Zero Gravity, etc
 etc etc)
 -Derrick
 -Stacey

Maybe drop 'Good Life' at the appropriate moment and watch the crowd go
 off.

Yeah, or the Ian Pooley's 'It's an Honour' remix of it, for a somewhat more
trance-acceptable feel (and still a very nice track IMO).

Great recommendations! I suppose the majority of the message is pretty
topical, isn't it? Stardancer is definitely your best bet, although not
'last 8 months new'. Fading the Edges by Claude Young on his Deta label
would make an interesting mix, particularly the track Angels. I'm
convinced minimal techno can be mixed out of anything at the same tempo, so
hunt down the more recent Hood. His Technatural EP is still in the crate.
The Francois K remix of Kraftwerk's Expo 2000 would probably work nicely
towards the beginning of the set too. It has a couple of nice places to
pull

off an abrupt transition.

You may also want to try and break up the tag team into every 2nd or 3rd
record, so you only have to worry about a few tracks to mix out of the
trance with.
