Re: [313] SL-1200 FAQ?
here's my thoughts on all the needles i've used/tried: 1) Stanton 500AL/505SK-great budget needle, best for the money, sound ok, long life, won't break. MAY have a hard time finding replacement needles (everybody uses them). can scratch on them, can mix on them, they do everything ok, burns your records slightly but not as bad as some others... keep the tracking at 4g 2) Shure M44-7-best scratching needle, will never skip and doesn't eat your vinyl, but they're fragile, and expensive 3) Ortofon Nightclubs-best sound quality needle, good skip protection, eats your vinyl about the same as a Stanton, VERY expensive though. get the OM version, the pretty ones have a channel go out occasionally. 4) Stanton Trackmaster/Groovemaster-if you're paying this much for a needle get the Ortofons instead good luck Mike From: Super Coffee Beans [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Recoil [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] SL-1200 FAQ? Re: [313] fuel to the fire : was hawtin hawtin everywhere
this should really be in a magazine somewhere... a website essay/bulletin, something. Mike From: Dale Lawrence [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] fuel to the fire : was hawtin hawtin everywhere Date: Mon, 22 Oct 2001 14:15:10 -0400 I have to agree with you. It seems whenever a new technology is introduced, the status quo immediately feels threatened by it and does everything in its power to slag it--methodically. The funny part is that usually the bigger the stir about something new, the more you can count on it becoming an accepted new medium for creation. It happens in both the audio and visual arts. A simple example would be the camera. When the camera first came around the painters of the world united and screamed Blashpemy! That 'device' is doing all the work! All they do is press the button and the image is recorded!... Now how many people on this list believe that the camera does all of the work in the creative process of photography? Those painters were fools... Back to recent modern times. How many people here use drum machines? How many of our favorite songs use drum machines? Would our music not exist without the drum machine? But when they were first developed the 'real' musicians, who had been doing it 'the correct way' since 'back in the day' screamed Blashpemy! That 'device' is doing all the work! Just press the button and the beats just come pouring out of it! Where is the creativity in that? Is it the device, or what you do with it? Next on the electronic musical timeline: The Sampler. Oh no! Here is a piece of equipment that all you do is press record, and it allows you to replay whatever it was that you recorded, spread out across your keyboard-- including other people's music. Hell, you don't even have to program beats anymore. In fact, even the users of the drum machine, who's rhythm devices had just recently gained acceptance as a justified creative musical instrument were screaming, Blashpemy! That 'device' is doing all the work! Just press that button and it plays back whatever they recorded from somewhere else! Now, eventually everyone realized that while the P.Diddy's chose to capitalize on the misuse of the technology, the majority of sampler users were keeping it real, and expanding their creative realm the old fashioned way, through inspiration. Except, maybe by now it was 10% inspiration to 90% perspiration, compared to the old 1%-- terrible odds huh? After the sampler what happened? A sh|tload of PC's started appearing in everyone's home and software based music creation avenues soon followed. You could get a program that did almost anything, simulated analog keyboards, simulated digital keyboards, simulated drum machines, and *gasp* samplers even. This wave is very recent over the past few years, but do you think it was a smooth evolution? Absolutely not. Who screamed the loudest? Come on, fill in the blank right here ___. That's right, the owners of the samplers and drum machines. After all, they had just invested all their hard-earned money-- thousands and thousands of dollars-- into their gear, and now any kid with a home computer could jump on hotline and have a complete musical studio set up inside their PC within hours? They had just recently --finally-- been recognized as the true innovators and then the next wave comes along and threatens their livelihood. Blashpemy! That 'device' is doing all the work! Just press that button and the computer writes the entire arrangement from start to finish! Where is the creative process in that!? This is a cycle that will never end. It is human nature. The irony here is that this music was inspired by technology-- in fact, they called it

i second (and third) the recommendation for Groovetech. great service, great selection, good prices, can't say enough about them. i've dealt with PlanetXUSA, they don't tell what's in stock on the website but if your order gets denied then they will tell you which ones they do have in stock. best bet with PlanetX is to just buy the new records they get and don't bother with the older ones. if you search the DJ Shoppe by genre, it'll give you the listing in newest-first order, and if it's less than a week old you'll probably be able to get it. peace, Mike From: Dennis Donohue [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313]online record stores Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2001 11:53:27 -0500 I've had similar experiences with satellite - I had to wait 3 1/2 weeks for a record, and then I was overcharged (on a debit card - which cost me money for overcharged account - which was severely overcharged (not jsut $2 or something)). I have had good luck with sixeleven records 611records.com though they never tell you if they're out of a record, neither does sonicgroove (www.sonicgroove.com) - groovetech is easily the best online record retailer - as planetx (planetxusa.com) and sonicgroove start charging premiums for sought after records, and never tell if they are in stock or not (though planetx sometimes did - and they may have changed since i ordered from them 1 1/2 years ago) You can also try large record stores with online presence - gramaphone records in chicago has a deep back-catalogue of house (though I'm not sure how much is advertised online) but they only advertise records that are in-stock. You can always call them as well. Disadvantages to large record stores include sales tax, large shipping fees, and having to deal with people that don't want to be on the phone. I've also found that you must know where your online shop is, as some are in teh uk (or even germany) and you might think you're getting a good deal on imports, but you're getting charged for it in shipping. Hope this helps a bit! Cheers! Dennis no offense to anyone who may be satisfied with satellite records, but I and many other people I've talked to about them have had nothing but problems. Problems range from over charging accounts all the way down to a month or two long wait for shipment of records that should be available immediately. I've had the later happen to me the few times I did order from satellite. I would suggest trying www.planetxusa.com for any online record orders. They were one of the pioneers in online music shopping and have been around long enough to have built a solid reputation throughout the industry. I only talk highly of them because I personally, as well as a good majority of their shoppers have had nothing but solid performance by PX. just thought i'd throw in my experiences danny - Original Message - From: Thomas Van Steen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, September 19, 2001 8:54 AM Subject: Re: [313]online record stores Hi, I do several order at Satellite Records ( http://www.satelliterecords.com ) .. A great many producers (hip-hop, trip-hop, breaks etc.) consistently use this process to create tracks, Richie has simply made 31 tracks in the same vein, segued them together and called it 'innovation' (His publicist spin I'm sure..). I've listened to the recording alot lately, it sounds like an experiment, no flow, just tracks, intended for the mind to bounce along too. The Gescom MD was certainly much more interesting, this still posseses linearity. Rich uses what seems like a lot of Perlon (I know two or three for sure), but in the most linear fashion possible. He could have made some awesome breakdown edits (to let the music breathe), or to give it an added 'wanna-bust-a-move' attitude, but instead he kept it pretty thumping (making it seem tracky, and boring). Re: [313] ANyone know about Finalscratch (maybe OT)
i really don't think FinalScratch is the next level. until it can do things that normal turntables and a mixer can't do, then it hasn't really done anything except make it a little more convenient on the current level. i'm sorry to say this, but i think the future of DJ'ing will be computers beatmatching for you... which will probably spawn even more uninspired DJ's. but the true testament i guess will be track selection, working of the EQ's, faders, cutting, etc., which is really what it's all about anyway, right? there will still be plenty of room for creativity, and although most of us hate the thought of a computer beatmatching for us (me included), wouldn't it be nice to not worry about it? :) saves the 10-30 seconds or so beatmatching, saves the corrections... could worry more about other things instead. i think that in addition to the digital sound flie there should be some sort of additional information file... such as BPM's, accurate to the thousandths, and a whole lot of other things that we haven't even thought of yet, in order to do something new with the DJ'ing rather than just emulating a fifty-year old practice. From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] ANyone know about Finalscratch (maybe OT) Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2001 03:28:55 EDT hello- i'm new to the list here, but the topic of FinalScratch caught my eye. There seems to be a lot of worry with people feeling threatened by new technology and the repercussions one such technology may have on the vinyl industry as a whole. times are changing, but I myself am a true vinyl addict. there's nothing better than digging through bins and bins of old records and finding that one gem. and the same holds true for new vinyl. listening to all the new music coming out, and then owning it. there's really no words to describe it. which leads me to mp3's and such. in case anyone hasn't noticed, look at the number of CD djs that have just popped up over night. Napster, a new technology, spawned loads of overnight DJs who don't take the time to seek out the music...rather their form of seeking the music out is by them passing hot tunes to one another and also downloading them. One record i've been seeking now for years is a Number of Names 'Sharevari'. Can't find it. But do a search on Napster...or better yet, Audiogalaxy. It's there. But owning some MP3, is that special? It somehow makes it all less exciting downloading an MP3. FinalScratch atleast designed a form of technology that allows DJs to play the MP3 file the way they'd spin a record. And I have to say, that's clever. I'm all for taking it to the next level and things of that sort, but is MP3 technology, distribution, and so forth the Final Answer -Kered - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] Save the vinyl info
also, look at how many Swedish imitation records come out. they sound the same, no new ideas, more than half of the Swedish sounding records are garbage. i mean, do these records really need to be released constantly? They found an idea (copying Mills) and made a formula out of it. Of course there's no need for all those releases, but that's what brings the food on the table, it's no secret at all. It's so sad the state of TECHNO, the early 90's innovative years seem light years away. I mean who of the old guys listens to techno anymore? No one, they've all gone house or to more sophisticated genres. yeah. formulaic is one step away from dying. look at trance... totally rejected by most of the underground DJ's now. a lot of these drum tracks aren't that far off from trance, not by how they sound, but by how they're made and what their goals are. trance is becoming big here now, but i wouldn't be surprised if pop music spits it out after a few years just like disco... maybe that'll be a good thing, so trance producers can start taking their sound underground again and start making better tracks, and the no-talent asses who ride the coattails of others' success will move on to some other genre. yeah, but how many other people here are sick of listening to 50 bad records to find 1 good one? That's why I called it the jungle, because you have to wander thru the bushes and all the bad sh*t before you find a new rare species or the golden treasure:) touche. :) Mike _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Factories would have to close down their businesses when there wouldn't be enough work (records to make) and thus cause the pressing prices go higher and higher, making it useless to release this music on vinyl when at the end a record could cost you twice as much as it does now. Only the strongest pressing plants would survive, and eventually there'd be only 2 or 3 pressing plants IN THE WHOLE WORLD. Not much choice there. I think this effect is already showing the way average record price has been steadily rising in the last 15 years, and the amount of new dance releases per month should now be higher that ever? i think that's mostly due to inflation. i mean, nobody claims the reason for higher burger prices is due to mad cow disease, right? higher cost of operation, higher prices to the consumer. price of a Big Mac combo meal 15 years ago sure wasn't over $4. i also don't think it would be that big a deal. i'm no economics expert, so maybe my opinion isn't as valid as yours, but there are so many horrible records coming out and so few pressings of good ones in comparison. why not just make MORE copies of good records? i don't think you'll have problems selling reissues of classics, look how fast Cybotron - Clear went. okay, maybe it might take a little bit of creativity out of the equation if everybody has the same records, but i've seen horrible records sit in shelves for years. a pressing plant may be pressing it, but if nobody buys it, somebody's got to pay for that. also, look at how many Swedish imitation records come out. they sound the same, no new ideas, more than half of the Swedish sounding records are garbage. i mean, do these records really need to be released constantly? if you miss one, you can find twenty others the next week that sound just like it. on a big system, it's REALLY hard to differentiate between two tracks a lot of the time because they're so similar. (note: i'm not trying to say all Swedish techno sounds bad, a lot of it is quite good, but you all know the imitations i'm talking about) i really wish record pressing plants would concentrate on making more copies of good records, and reissuing good older records and classics that they KNOW will sell, rather than pressing the latest record that nobody will remember or care about two weeks after its release. because people who are relatively new to record buying, like me, can find the good stuff and buy the classics up on sight. It's a sort of Amazon jungle this dance music business; you have to have as many species as possible in order to keep the ecological balance. yeah, but how many other people here are sick of listening to 50 bad records to find 1 good one? bad not as in missed the boat, but bad as in copycat bullsh*t records that you can't imagine anybody (with any reasonable amount of taste) buying? Fabrice Lig mentioned record pressing plants having way too many records to press. i think the constant onslaught of garbage records has something to do with that. how about cutting down the number of bad releases instead? ;) maybe raise the bar for record labels so we don't have to search through mounds of crap to find something good... Mike From: fabrice Lig [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] Save the vinyl info Date: Tue, 07 Aug 2001 22:10:10 +0200 Hey guys, I just though about it because someone in this list signed by 'Save the vinyl I talked several times to some people from Vinyl pressing factories and eachone told me that they are really really busy and always too much records to press. Some of them are trying to buy old machines in Africa, East Europe... to be able to press more and more vinyls. In the same time, they need a serious maintenance and its not easy to find some guys who are really into this kind of machines. They are thinking to build new machines when everyone will be broken. (they stopped to produce pressing machines several years ago) So I think that vinyl is not ready to die ! Thats true that for each labels the number of copies is going down but there is more and more labels so more and more vinyls. so... The most obvious way to physically protect things like turntables, mixers, and recording gear is to purchase protective cases and racks. This is a relatively small investment, compared to what you'll have to pay to fix a broken turntable or a shattered LCD on your digital studio. Remember, you may successfully lug your gear without cases to 100 gigs, but it only takes one careless move at gig 101 to do some major damage. Thankfully, ProSound carries travel cases and racks in all sizes and shapes, making it easy for you to armor up. http://www.pssl.com/s/05.tpl Another type of protection that's often overlooked comes in the form of surge protectors and power supplies. It goes without saying that you should NEVER use a power supply which was designed for any product other than the one you're using. And if your keyboard, mixer or workstation has a three-prong plug, trust us, it's there for a reason! Don't ever break the ground pin off to fit a two-prong outlet, unless you want to sound crappy, shock yourself, or perhaps even worse. From: Leif Anderson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Electro pointers Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2001 21:05:54 -0400 You might want to check out Music Instructor. They're a Berlin based outfit that puts out some very nice retro-electro sounds. I just got their album Electro City recently and I've really been digging it. Great vocodored vocals over smooth electro beats. Not so much electro, but I recently discovered Bolz Bolz. I can't believe I never picked up on this guy sooner. Absolutely wonderful 80's sounding techno full of soul and great melodies. I really love this vintage analog sound. i took a listen the other day too, and i must say it's absolutely brilliant too, but the lack of danceable tracks and the really low BPM of most of the tracks (i'd say less than 110 bpm) made me pass... lots of beatless vocal tracks, really beautiful material. a couple of those vocal cuts are just DYING to be laid over a house beat. Hang on, don't tell me - Zombie Nation! I don't know if you can pick up a copy of Jockey Slut but D.C explains that whole episode in there. Personally, I think Dave plays the best selection of records out of any Techno DJ I've heard. When I go to a club, I want the DJ to rock the dancefloor, to make me dance. I don't want to stand by the DJ box with a notepad saying ooh, that's an interesting obscure techno record, what an un-obvious choice. You've gotta understand that party energy is what he creates!! (sorry :) Seriously though, even Mr. C who doesn't like D.C as person (who does - he sounds like a complete a**hole!) was saying to me at Headstart what great energy he creates. Dave has some excellent, dark electro, brilliant Chicago house, hard minimal techno, housier record like Compass, basically anything with originality that rocks a dancefloor. Dave is like a full-on, no-holds barred speaker assault. What really sets D.C apart from other DJs for me though is his mixing ability (how anyone can doubt this amazes me.) Personally, I think he's the best I've ever heard. I've also heard D.C more than any other DJ. I don't actually give a f*ck what he's like as a person as I don't go to Headstart to have a chat with him. Derrick May described D.C as having the biggest balls in Techno. Dave also won Essential Mix of the year for 2000. Explain to me how he could win that if he doesn't know how to mix? The fuse club CD is brilliant, the Electro Boogie CD is brilliant, his Essential Mixes are brilliant, nearly everything he's produced is brilliant and I'm sure his new CD will be, erm brilliant! : ) GG - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Furthermore, this relative usually prefers music with vocals. What three or four 313-sensitive (loose definition) tracks might be good for an introduction to the current sound? Well, I heard some Kit Clayton samples as well as Monolake. I can't say I'm compelled to buy any of their stuff. It sounds too experimental to me right now. Whereas Maurizio, Vainqueur don't sound experimental. They don't sound like intelligent techno. They don't resemble Aphex Twin. I know quite a few people like monolake and kit claytonthe latest Clayton CD was much different than what I've heard in the past. I remember he had some good stuff on the Organized Noise comp CD, but his stuff from the Nek Sanelet sounded different. I'm not saying it's all that bad, it's not what I want now. Both of them are very diverse producers. Monolake has not made a lot of straight dance tracks ever, but my favorite of his dancier stuff is Tangent and some of the stuff on Hong Kong. Can't believe I forgot to mention Monolake... Kit clayton has some stuff that's more on the minimal tip - not as noisey or ambient. Moles and Avacadoes on Background is his closest to the Maurizio sound in terms of dubbiness but really more in the world of minimal techno. I love his live ambience too, but I think it's better suited to the context of his live sets, where he really shines IMO. I wish he'd release a live CD. His betalounge set from October is still doing it for me, especially the 2nd half of it once he gets through the noise. Seeing him live on the Formless Form tour was a real treat. For more of a beat treatment from these two, check out the Revenge of the Nerds set at http://www.monolake.de which is the two of them live. You can also hear most of Monolake's output including Tangent. I fail to see the Aphex Twin comparison. If only the Maurizio-type producers would start making tracks again, that would be awesome. I want to hear a bunch of that stuff, I'd like to have more than 5 hours worth. They have been making new tracks. Check out the new Rythm Sound that was posted last week when it comes out. They've been making tracks this whole time, just slowly. Also check Deep Chord for quality stuff that's pretty similar (not to re-hash that debate). Anyone else notice Psion on the thedrivehome trailer? Wonder if that'll get corrected... this would most likely, in effect, damp the resonances. in other words, making sure the table is very heavy would most likely damp a lot of the vibrations (although the bricks most likely would transmit a lot of it). i say isolate the table as well as possible. while a trick like that might be cool nothing is worse than having a needle jump. Re: [313] vinyl: not for me; but mp3 cds are. your answers
uhh, no. no, no, and no. the 24-bit sound is NOT kept when pressed to vinyl, because the quality of sound is only as good as the weakest link, and that would be the quality of the vinyl press itself. the speakers don't do any conversions. the D/A converter in your electronics will do that (most D/A converters are in the cd player's circuits itself; if it has an analog output (RCA, XLR, 1/4, whatever) then you know the conversion already happened. digital reproduction is 'nearly' perfect. the level of distortion produced by quantization and filtering is so small it's not even funny. worry more about speaker distortions. what this has to do with 313 i don't know, but it had to be said. :) Mike From: Joel Reitzloff [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: --autopilot-- [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] vinyl: not for me; but mp3 cds are. your answers Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 13:23:38 -0400 actually, the machines producing your favorite sounds are producing AT LEAST, and DONT ARGUE 24bit sound, sometimes even at 48000 or higher khz. when this is mixed down professionally and PRESSED (NOT BURNED, DIGITALLY) to vinyl, that sound is kept, because of it's format. speakers are analog, and they must put out analog sound. therefor, when your CD plays, the data is converted by the speaker so it can play. when you burn higher quality music to a cd, the quality is automatically dithered to 16bit, sometimes with adverse effects. the vinyl produces a sound for the speakers, that digital can only emulate, and can for the most part only reach 16bit quality. say you like the quality of the cleanest CD you've ever heard, now imagine TWICE that quality! kinda hard.. huh maybe that's why people tend to go crazy to the vinyl - Original Message - From: --autopilot-- [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, April 11, 2001 5:58 AM Subject: Re: [313] vinyl: not for me; but mp3 cds are. I think alot of the quality of the audio goes out the window after digital quantizantion. Something I don't understand here - so much music is made with samplers and other digital devices, so presumably the sound coming out is quantised to 16-bit/44.1KHz by definition anyway - how can writing that quantised sound onto vinyl suddenly give it a better dynamic range / quality ? I suspect there's a bit of retro-fetishism going on here (not that there's anything wrong with that - just that vinyl rules for reasons other than sound quality). Debates r.e. the quality of mp3 files are mainly irrelevant at present since the primary point of mp3 files is swapping, i.e. you take what you can get in terms of bitrate. Sure, higher bitrates sound better, but most extant files are lower bitrate. Since it's a lossy compression system there will always be a difference, and the louder the P.A. the more audible that difference will be. Personally I'm not ready to make the switch yet, though I do play with WAVs off a puter. :-) (-: Ash --autopilot-- [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.autopilot.co.uk - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

RE: [313] the race debate
if you have a hard time believing this, just think about women in the workforce as an analogy. a good parallel. do just as good a job a lot of the time, get paid less and don't get the promotion. Mike From: laura gavoor [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] the race debate Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2001 17:40:52 With a tag line of: Ford Focus...Detroit Techno sponsoring a Moby tour...what do you suggest? Shall a Mike Banks or a Juan Atkins for example, sit back and let someone else make his money and benefit from their efforts while they are quintessentially excluded and pushed aside. What kind of juveniles do you all think created this music and mentality? These are grown men and women, with families to support and REAL bills to pay. Are our dreams of financial success and acclaim to be kicked to the curb for the greater good? What the f**k are you all saying ANYWAY? It is simply not in our nature, nor in the nature of the culture of aggressive creative individualism/techno to simply lie down and take a fist up the rump. Can we try at least to approach this as grown business people. After all, 313 CREATED this business and now the majors and stupid, tagalong bad white people wish to exploit it and us for the sake of the dollar. I'm disgusted with the apathy being exhibited in this thread. Life is not E based. That is simply NOT REAL y'all. Parties that bring all the races together are incredibleBUT THEY ARE JUST PARTIES. Party life and the esoterics of the music are NOT what we are discussing here at all. How would any of you like it if you busted yo ass 24-7 for 10+ years and someone else got paid for your work. Would this not raise your ire?? Come one kiddies, let's talk reality here. A trance rip-off of Jaguar was just the tip of the iceberg. If you truly believe in this music and culture perhaps you might like to join in the fight for its defense and longevity. If this does, in fact, occur as it has been outlined to me, the global family...and I mean the FOR REAL mugs-- the world over-- will respond. Try to take over, white wash, distort, divert or dilute any of our accomplishments or economics and there will be consequences. We are a force to be reckoned with when unified and I cannot think of a better opportunity! Or we could just ignore them and keep doing it better, action not reaction you know? Mike From: Robin Crampton [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] Jet Set and song id Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2001 12:03:13 +0100 What do people think of the Jet Set EP by Jeff Mills? I finally got around to picking it up on Saturday and I'm not very impressed. Is it me or is he just churning 'em out these days? And now on to the song id. Preacher-style acapella vocals (in the same vein as those on Mr Fingers, Can You Feel It?) ending with and they (we?) still teach kids (children?) to play house. Or something. Thanks in advance. Re: [313] DEMF mills?
i'm not about to put words in his mouth, but i remember him saying that he REALLY likes to keep low-key in the place of his home. which is understandable. i think his words were something to the effect of not having people stop him in the street all the time after they saw him at a gig the past weekend... maybe not great for people in Chicago, but the man has to do things the way he feels most comfortable. Mike From: Dave Knapik [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] DEMF mills? Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 17:11:54 -0600 I see this point well, and I agree that he should hop on those European gigs to make money, but it would just be nice if he showed a stronger desire to give something back to someone near to his origins. I regret missing the Wizard gig at the start of the month, but in the end I'm glad I worked harder to get to that Plus 8 party on 10/28 because time and again I've seen Richie pour his heart into Detroit with no signs of letting up. Jeff played for the first time in 10 years in the city that started him? And that was supposed to excite us? I live in Chicago and I take it Jeff lives here, too, but I haven't seen him give us a thing, not even one performance, and there are plenty of places for him to play besides a dirtylittlerave. ;) I love his music and think he's a wonderful and innovative artist, but I just wish he played around here more often, both to see him and for the statement that performing in your home town or town-of-residence makes. DEMF wish list -- agree with that Stewart Walker idea and would love to see DJ Ferenc/I-F -- I look forward to the TBA. Should be a fun time! I've only seen Kooky once (at the Plus 8 party), but it was phenomenal -- I'm psyched for a repeat. the Orb's Little Fluffy Clouds... maybe even Acid Eiffel if you dropped it at the right time (probably more of a down-time in the dance floor) Mike From: Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Dave Clark [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] i have to dj and i'm scared. Anyway I thought it was a good question. I think that with a careful touch, you could blend our music well and maybe provide some real emotion to offset the blandness of hands-in-the-air trance. My first track would be the original Knights of the Jaguar. Then I would check out: -Red Planet (Stardancer, Ultra Violet Images, Sex in Zero Gravity, etc etc etc) -Derrick -Stacey Maybe drop 'Good Life' at the appropriate moment and watch the crowd go off. Yeah, or the Ian Pooley's 'It's an Honour' remix of it, for a somewhat more trance-acceptable feel (and still a very nice track IMO). Great recommendations! I suppose the majority of the message is pretty topical, isn't it? Stardancer is definitely your best bet, although not 'last 8 months new'. Fading the Edges by Claude Young on his Deta label would make an interesting mix, particularly the track Angels. I'm convinced minimal techno can be mixed out of anything at the same tempo, so hunt down the more recent Hood. His Technatural EP is still in the crate. The Francois K remix of Kraftwerk's Expo 2000 would probably work nicely towards the beginning of the set too. It has a couple of nice places to pull off an abrupt transition. You may also want to try and break up the tag team into every 2nd or 3rd record, so you only have to worry about a few tracks to mix out of the trance with.
