Re: (313) No Movement 2005?

2005-01-27 Thread kj at technotourist dot org
I think that one of the best thing that happened thanks to
DEMF/Movement is that people in the US and foremost in Detroit suddenly
realized that they had this music that was completely unknown to them
but is so popular in the rest of the world. Without the festival
Derrick, Juan and Kevin probably never got the Michichan Governor
Award, there would never be a techo exhibit in the Detroit Historical.
I can remember that at the first DEMF people looked at me like i was
some mental patient just because i was in Detroit for this music fest.
I personally would not mind paying for the festival but i think the
strength for the local community is the fact that it is free, it is for
Detroit and not only the freaks. We have lots of funny pictures of
people who normally would never have visited the festival but got
exposed to it just because it was free.

Just my 2ct...

Martin,
Honestly, the reasons for the sucess of the festival have already
been
presented by Ian and others. They lie not in the numbers, or the
money,
but in the ability to share the experience with someone you may have
never
been able to share it with, in a manner that NO ONE saw coming. That
very
first festival was clouded in doubt, almost didn't happen right up
until

the very day it happned, and was there not just for the true
techno-warriors, but for those who may or may not have ever been
introduced to techno at all. It was an ambassadorship for the sound
and
the freedom of expression that we all promote on a daily basis,
wrapped up
into a weekend in the city that incubated it, for those who may not
have
experienced it before... I think one of the best things about the
DEMF,
was the fact that it wasn't happening after midnight, in some stinky,
wet

warehouse, but rather, in an open place, in the middle of the day. It
attracted those uncommon to the subculture BECAUSE of the way it was
different from a european MASSIVE, or from a rave...

:D ense.

3. Are we on the list doing what we can to help make sure it happens?

4. Would it be better to start again and just continue to build on
what

we make than suffer at the hands of people who don't care?

5. If we feel the numbers would be low in Detroit, why not put it on

Surgeon - Dynamic/Downwards/Counter Balance
…like better moments of The Orb, but more edgy.

Ian O'Brien- Peacefrog
I love The Black Dog record - can't believe they are back! Excellent.

Dan Moore - Superconductor
A beautiful return to form from The Black Dog with great atmospheric
electronics as only they can.

Rob Da Bank – Radio 1
The pioneers are back, praise the lord!

MixMaster Morris
… a new EP and it is the best solo thing he's [they have] done I think
...three of the four tracks could definitely be described as chillout
music, they certainly aren't going to be on the Judge Jules show… this

Mark Broom - King Of Snakes/Pure Plastic
Perfect for Sunday afternoons reading the Essex bible!!!

Tom Magic Feet - iDJ
Musically, suffice to say, this record is strange and wondrous.

Sorry Ken but Kingdom's not the type of place you're going to hear
the

deeper MG tunes. Hardcore techno? I don't believe there were any

Glenn

Wilson tracks; more like UR - Timeline, Abe Duke/Blake Baxter - What
Happened (which started this all), Rob Hood - The Vision, Jeff
Mills,

Mike

Grant and some other funky techno. I'm working on one of those MG

nights

so we'll see what happens..

Mike Grant isn't going to like that mate, I heard he was in the

bet he's pretty hard.

I've seen him play in Holland few months ago, he's massive, I only

didn't

like his dj set at all,
it was way to simple and almost hardcore techno (it wasn't 3 o'clock

sorry Mike, but I expected some moods grooves / trackmode vibes...

Maybe

it was because the dj who played before him, he played worse!

Well the problem is that when you try to start a threat about a techno
record people ignore it. The reason that this list is so off-topic
sometimes is not that there seems to more detroit house then techno,
the subscribers are more into house then to techno. Which is fine be me
but if you are not looking for good techno you probably won't find it.

I have to admit that these ongoing discussions about the latest KDJ
re-re-re-re-re-release or that Theo Parrish cut-up is really boring,
actually it is one of the reasons why i am on and off this list. A
couple of years ago the most reoccurring discussions on here were a)
Jeff Mills is not God, b) Who is Drexciya and c) What is Red Planet.
Lately this has become a) Have you heard the latest KDJ b) have you
heard the latest Theo Parrish c) Who the hell can Alex Bond post so
much.

And yeah some people do mention new techno records here but if no one
responds to that people stop mentioning them because they think this
lists doesn't care about that.

I really like these vocal tracks, and even the first O1 track had
vocals on it. This version of Someday is totally different, it is an
extremely typical Octave One track with vocal from Ann Saunderson on
top. I personally like the fact that they did put it on there, that is
what is going to sell it to the audiences outside the underground scene

Over all, Im looking forward to the release, I certainly won't pass it

recent eps, this release hasn't convinced me that its of quality equal
to many of 0-1s previous releases, or the RNG releases (the live mix
on the Mills DVD was incredible). Perhaps because the increased
involvement of Lorne. Lorne was 9 years old when he watched his older
brothers create Day by Day, it's obvious that the real talent flows
within the older brothers. I'm not hating, but I just wouldn't put him
alongside his brothers in terms of having the gift. At least not from
what I've already heard by him, but maybe he'll surprise me on this

(313) [Dutch Spam] The Optic Nerve

2004-09-02 Thread kj at technotourist dot org
For those of you who have not listened to this already, the new album
from Keith Tucker's The Optic Nerve on Puzzlebox is really good. If
you did enjoy his album on Delsin you will enjoy this one. It does
sound a lot like Model 500 to me, really nice.

Also on the Puzzlebox tip: The Optic Nerve mix album by Das Closer is
enjoyable to for Keith Tucker fans. One of the members of AUX 88, Black
Tony, also released an album on his new label Dark Audio Conceptions.
If you like Tucker his material you will enjoy this one as well.

Press Release

From: MagicMikeYoung WRCJ 90.9FM
RE: Stick It In Your Ear
AUGUST 23, 2004

As you well know WDTR is now WRCJ. This is the first step in a change
of format that will include Classical, and Jazz music as the primary
programming. This change of format was to have started in June 30th.
Then said format change was to start August 30th. But because of
circumstances unknown to the producers and staff the date of this
format change is unknown.
For the last 10 years I have produced “Stick It In Your Ear”. I
thought it was an outrage that in the city that (“Detroit’s Gift to the
World”) this music we call Techno was not heard on Detroit radio. I
thought that it was an outrage that our homegrown musicians who are
considered STARS in other parts of the world had no opportunity to have
their music heard in the city they LIVE, WORK, and LOVE.
Friday August 27th, 2004 will be the last “Stick It In Your Ear” show.
I do not know what the future will bring. I will always support Detroit
music, and musicians. At this point I don’t feel that WRCJ will have a
place for this show. I also can no longer take the UNCERTENTY that
surrounds my roll as producer, employee and representative of this
radio station. The stress on me has been too much for me to take.
Thank You all for the support and LOVE you have shown me, Alesia and
WDTR. WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU ALL.

 ONE LOVE

Hrm... here in Cleveland I'd have to say Devo, they're the

closest thing

to techno that's come from here and been influential (yeah, they're
actually from Akron, but it's close enough, mmm-kay?)

There were certainly other influential artists, such as Pere Ubu

 The

Dead Boys, but I don't think they had much impact on the techno

scene. :)

Every City/Town has one, but which one do you think has had

the most

influence on the scene we now love?

From Sheffield, it has to be Cabaret Voltaire, their BBQ's

and Party's

influenced everyone here and for many it was the first time

anyone had

heard Kraftwerk on a big rig - god bless Mal and Richard.

You're joking, surely? Its long established that you can't use a name
that's already taken to release records (for both legal and moral
reasons).
Would it be ok for a rock band to call themselves U2, as long as they
don't mention Bono or the Edge on the label?

The Los Hermanos of Rolando and Mitchell is trademarked as the label
name, this is an artist who calls himselves Los Hermanos.

H, in dance music terms the distinction is a little vague at
times, no? Underground Resistance is a good example...

Well i didn't want to turn this thread into a discussion about
trademarks. I tried to say that it looked like it wasn't a Detroit Los
Hermanos record and that people use same names all the time. Yes that
isn't nice, some where in the mid-ninties i recorded some stuff for
Djax under the name of Dash, 2 or 3 years later a Tresor Dj called Dash
showed up... well sh*t happens :) Just recently I-F stopped his
residency at club Nitsche (SP?) in Barcelona and a few months later
another DJ from that club starts playing under the name of Ferenc and
recording records, lame thing to do but hey it happens and isn't there
a canadian guy who makes techno under a name that looks a lot like
Derrick May? There is also an IDM artist called Donna Summer :)

Besides from that I-F thing, i really don't care that much, i would be
to busy being angry about those thing, rather listen to good music :)

From what i can remember from this is what they played:

- Return of the Dragons
- The Final Frontier Numbers
- Electronic Warfare
- Cybotron/Clear
- Analog Assasins
- Mi raza
- The Tokin (i think that is the 'Lawrence of Arabia track)
- First Galactic Baptist Church
- Soul Saver (with thank you from MM)
- Millennium To Millennium
- Hi Tech Jazz
- Transition speech with Inspiration
- The Punisher with Sonic Destroyer

I might be wrong on the order but this is what i think they played that
night. I know i am repeating the 500 other listmembers who where there
but i want to say it anyway that it was an amazing liveset! I wished
more people danced instead of stood in front of the gear and looking
:-/

Still an amazing night, was this the first time in 12 years thar UR
played live in Detroit?

Other tracks I remember hearing were 'First Galactic Baptist Church,'
'Soulsaver,' ‘Sonic Destroyer’ and did some else mention ‘Hi-Tech
Jazz?’

There were also numerous shots of the D, some robots that were
fighting during Sonic Destroyer, Bruce Lee and Jazz Musicians that I
didn’t recognize on the projector.

Truly one of the greatest live performances of music I have ever
witnessed. On the drive home we just sat there in awe, no words, no
music, just the tires humming on the road.

The most funniest thing i got was this sticker Tom Linder gave to me
with the 2 words

Jit Happens

On it. Simply brilliant because it is oh so true. I was hoping to see
some jit during the liveset from electrofunk though. Musical highlights
for me this weekend at the festival: Duplex, Orlando Voorn, Amp
Fiddler, Mike Grant, Ron Trent, Terrence Parker Maurice Turner
tagteaming at the mainstage Buzz Goree.

Some new trends we saw and i now need to copy to be cool:
- People tripping over a step-up at the 7th city party at a
3-per-minute rate and trying to cover that up by doing an extremely
cool dance move

- Holding a record in the air while dancing
- Female house dj's who look like f*cking hippies

The best afterparties for me where the For Those Who Know III and the
Green Lights GO!!! party. On the last party there was not time to dance
i ran into friends everywhere :) i was a bit dissapointed by Shawn
Rudimans liveset though. His records do sound so much better :-/ Claude
Young surprised me by playing a brilliant set and same goes for Jeff
Samuels.

Let's back up for a minute.

houseman04: Did you grow up in Southeastern Michigan? You mentioned
that you work in A2, but are you originally from the area?

I can understand that, if you're not from the area, you could see this
as a potentially divisive and confusing issue. But it's really very
common for anyone from basically east of Jackson to the lake (not to
mention north of Toledo to basically...well, the lake) to refer to
themselves as from Detroit.

It's not meant to be deceiving. It's just that the so-called metro
Detroit area really is thought of as that - satellites around Detroit.
And the area in question is REALLY large.

When people ask me where I'm from, I tell them Detroit. (I was born in
Warren and grew up in Sterling Heights.) If they then make it clear
that they're actually familiar with the area, I go into suburbs-level
detail.

2 more cents,

track. It certainly does sound like an older UR record because of the
spaced out vocals and bouncy bass lines that sound kind of similar to
transmat records. Anybody know the name of the equipment i'm talking
about? This track is really politically motivated, etched in the
inside run out gooves you will read The needs of many are greater

sentiment. 313er ryan burns concurs that this record sounds a bit
dated BUT in a good way. I would recommend picking it up if you like
nation to nation, pre-industrial sounding UR. Free as you want to be
isn't as fun for me. Sounds kind of half completed, like the start of
a good track. Its only a few minutes long.

The Theory is an old track. This version originally appeared on Equinox

'The needs of the many, outweighs the need of the few' is taken from a
Start Trek movie (The wrath of Kahn). The other sample where they talk
about the Genesis device is also taken from the same movie.

I love this track btw. this definitely one of my favorite UR tracks...
