Detecting Window Display Types

2008-05-29 Thread Jerry Niman
Hello folks.

I've not been able to track down an answer to this question in the fora.

Is there a way for workflow to tell if the current window display type is
"list", "split" or "detail only"?

Re: Crystal Reports in v7

2008-05-29 Thread Nyall McCavitt

Hi,

I have seen a similar one to this which was due to the V7 client being
installed over the previous V6 clients. Our solution was to uninstall
all Remedy clients and re-install the V7 clients. Perhaps there is an
old dll or registry entry that is causing the issue?

Hope that this helps.

After searching the archive here we tried to rename thfolder \common

in that case. Any ideas?

Jerry,

Not to my knowledge.

Nor is there a way to tell if:

) the Advanced Search Bar is visible
) any specific field is hidden or visible
) what other forms are open (but that may be possible with window
events, but is just should not be that hard)
) how many instances of each form(s) are open in the current session
) if the user is logged into more than one ARS server at the same time
) what screen resolution the user is using
) what fonts the client is using (that may effect the display)

( for the User Tool )
)Where the users cache folder is on the local system
)If the user is using a preference server or not

And I am sure there are other items on this kind of a wish list too...

Oh.. how could I forget this one...

What modified date is being used for a given ARS form. (AKA: When was

Accessing the View instead of the form over http

Is there a way to specify the view in the url so I can give that view
access to some users in URL? I donot see a seperate name for the view in

Remedy on a Blackberry

2008-05-29 Thread Gary Opela (Corporate)
I've never worked with a Blackberry before, but have had a question of if an
interface designed for a blackberry could be done in Remedy.

Does a Blackberry have IE on it? If so, can you just design a smaller, more

one master incident..

Is there any way to implement this? i saw that task templates are
useful for this kind of requirements. anyway, just want to check with
the listers to get any alternate and easy solutions?

I have seen a similar one to this which was due to the V7 client being

old dll or registry entry that is causing the issue?

Hope that this helps.

Mid-tier and internal network

2008-05-29 Thread Dwayne Martin
Dear List,

We have a Mid-Tier system on a web server that is accessible only to our
university’s internal network. That is, someone from within the University
can access the Mid-Tier, but someone outside can’t unless they have a VPN.

Unfortunately, we also have numerous regular web pages that we DO want
outsiders to be able to access. Has anyone had any experience setting up a web
server so that Mid-Tier is only available internally, but regular web pages are
available to the world?

(Mid-Tier 7.1 patch 2, IIS 6 web server, Windows 2003 machine, Tomcat servlet
server)

Perhaps you need to set up TWO MidTier servers:

   - One MidTier server for internal use only, located on the trusted
network
   - Another MidTier server for external access, along with serving web
pages, located within the DMZ

Dwayne,

This can be done but I cannot tell you exactly how as it has been a
while since I secured websites on IIS.

I believe the way to do this would be to create a separate website
on the IIS server for the AR Mid-Tier and add an IP Address range
restriction to it so that only users who have IP addresses in certain ranges
can access the page. You may be able to find some information on Microsoft's
site
(http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/WindowsServer2003/Library/IIS/

IIS and it will likely take some testing to get it to work properly with
ARS.

Look in your ar.conf for the referenced plugin file. If you are on
Windows, the file extension will be .dll, not .so. Also look in the
plug-in logs to see if arplugin is not finding a particular dll
referenced in ar.conf. If neither of the above is the case, then in
all likelihood, the ar.conf file is not referencing the dll that
provides this plug-in function.

The alternative would be to write your own filter...I've got no experience
in doing this but it may be possible to create an ISAPI filter
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISAPI) that checks for the arsys URL and then
compares it to a list of IP address ranges and only allows access under
certain conditions.

Good luck and please let us know which way you go and any pains you run
into.

Re: Mid-tier and internal network

2008-05-29 Thread Kaiser Norm E CIV USAF 96 CS/SCCE
If IIS is your web server, why not create two separate virtual
directories--one for your Remedy apps and one for your outside-facing
non-Remedy apps. Then you can set directory security individually for
each virtual directory (i.e., set up an IP range).

Then to avoid changing links, replace your actual .asp pages with pages
that do a redirect to the actual page. For example, suppose your actual
page is https://remedy.jmu.edu/whatever.asp and that page show a nice
list of professors or something.

Rename that something like
https://remedy.jmu.edu/virtualdirectoryname/professors.asp and then just
turn whatever.asp into a redirect to professors.asp. Thus, the change
would be invisible to the end user.

Re: Mid-tier and internal network

2008-05-29 Thread Rick Cook
What about creating a non-ARS web front-end that pointed directly to the
forms (menu? list of links?) you wanted to allow outside access to? That
should be pretty easy for a Java/XML programmer to do. The only other way I
can think of would be to create a separate mid-tier server that lives
outside the firewall, and redirect all the traffic that goes there to the
shorter list of forms (maybe put them in a separate application, and only

CI Relationship View Issue - What am I missing?

2008-05-29 Thread Kevin Pulsen
Hello ARSList,

This is for an issue with CMDB 2.1 (ARS 7.1, Mid-tier & ITSM 7.03 patch 7
Suite)

I am using the Remedy Windows client to run through a test and functionality.

When I select the CI Relationship Viewer, either from Asset or Incident a new
screen pops up - CI Relationship Viewer and it states - CMDB libraries are not
available.

I have looked through the documents and all I could find is to restart the
Mid-tier? Did that, didn't work.

I can't find anything on BMC's support site for this error.

Did I miss a configuration somewhere?

Thanks again,

Kevin P.

Or two virtual servers, each with its own IP. That way you could limit
access with NAT and firewall rules.

Re: Mid-tier and internal network

Thanks, Russel and Brad and JT.

The trouble with a separate website is that we have links to all these
websites that point to "https://remedy.jmu.edu/whatever.asp.";

Tracking all those links down and changing them, or changing our
Mid-Tier address would be a major pain, but that might be the way we
have to go.

You have to copy 3 files from the sdk>bin directory of CMDB installation.

cmdbapi21.dll
cmdbjni21.dll
cmdbapi21.jar

Copy these files in the midtier WEB-INF/lib directory and bounce your
webserver.

Server Group - Load Balancing Questions

2008-05-29 Thread Wilson, Bruce B
I read about specifying the "Share" option when specifying the AR System
database when installing AR System Server.

I want to use the "Share" option to configure two Remedy servers to
reside in a Remedy Server Group.

Can I put a load balancer on top of a Remedy Server Group?

What is the recommended load balancing technology?

Is there anything that is not allowed? We are considering using
"Windows Load Balancer".

Is there any special Remedy licensing to utilize Server Group
technology?

Thanks,

There are quite a few solutions, including Alteon, F5, and many others.
Use whatever your organization is familiar with. :-)

Each server in the group needs an AR server license, but can share
application and user licensing.

You don't mention what version, but I would recommend 7.1

- Yes

What is the recommended load balancing technology?

- Only requirement that I'm familiar with is that it have the ability to do
sticky bits

Is there anything that is not allowed?

- Not that I'm aware of

We are considering using "Windows Load Balancer"

Is there any special Remedy licensing to utilize Server Group technology?

- Depends on your version...in 7.1 you don't need any special licensing...in
previous versions you need to get a special key for your floating licenses.

Re: Server Group - Load Balancing Questions

2008-05-29 Thread Rick Cook
Something to know if you're new to Remedy LB is that it doesn't truly
load-balance, defined as keeping the load balanced equally between all
servers in the group. It's really load sharing. You might have 50 users
over 3 servers, and depending on when they logged in, what they're doing,
etc., you might have 13 on Server A, 30 on Server B, and 7 on Server C.

That's probably not a real problem for most of us, but you should know to
expect this going in.

Hi All,

On ARS 6.3 (Solaris, Oracle 10g), one of our developers added fields with field
ids 16 and 17 on the BMC:BMC_AssetBase form.

I am trying to delete these 2 fields, but since they are core field ids, it
does not allow me to delete the fields.

My question is:
Is there a way to get rid of these fields (core)?
Is there some documentation regarding the list of core fields with their usage.

Thanks

*Application-Query-Delete-Entry
"SHR:TmpMessages" (( 'Status' = "Sent") AND ( 'Send Time' !=  $NULL$ ))*.
The effect is to clear a form that contains records accumulated during the
day, but which are no longer needed.

Running this creates thousands of entries in the arerror.log file (roughly,
but not exactly, equivalent to the number of records in the form) that say
this: *Thu May 29 10:31:45 2008 390603 : Entry does not exist in database
(ARERR 302)*.

There are no errors that show up in the api or sql logs, and the records DO
get deleted. Any idea why these errors appear? I'm kinda stumped as to
where else to look for a cause.

I believe you have to use the Request ID field with this command. Since
you are not providing that, you get the entry error.

2008-05-29 Thread Carey Matthew Black
Rick,

If I had to guess the server is getting the list of entries (GLE
API call) then deleting each entry one at at time AND doing a GetEntry
_after_ it did the delete. (And the part that is producing the error
is the GetEntry call, but it is ignored and the deleting continues.)

I wonder if this is a known error in your specific ARS server version?
(AKA: It sounds like the bug is that the ARS server [Escalation
thread] is logging errors that are, and should be, ignored. It is not
an error to not find the data after you told the application server to
delete it. )

I would suggest that you open an incident with BMC tech support and
see what they say.

Re: Application-Delete-Query-Entry gives errors

2008-05-29 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
It sounds like you are running the escalation against the
SHR:TmpMessages form. What is happening is the list of records to
modify is being queried for and then the command is being executed
against each of the records. Since the command deletes all of the
records then the next record to process no longer exists. You should be
receiving the error for n-1 records (since it will fail for records 2
and up). I would recommend changing to the Application-Delete-Entry
command
  Application-Delete-Entry "$SCHEMA$" $Request ID$

The other possible solution is to run the escalation against a different
form that has only 1 record.

2008-05-29 Thread Rick Cook
OK, as I expected, some answers that make sense at various levels. Now that
I got answers unbiased by this next, let me drop the other shoe.

The exact same escalation runs on another 7.1 server using the same
environment (OS/DBMS/ARS) versions without the errors. In addition to these
two 7.1 servers, I have it running on two 6.3 servers without the errors,
too. That would tend to minimize the bug possibility, but it doesn't make
me understand why the servers are acting differently.

So what's different about this server? Beats me. I've looked at everything
in the install, running daemons, conf files, etc. that I can think of, and
there doesn't appear to be any difference. I'll keep looking, though.

Any new ideas?

As I understand it, using the call I'm using, (
Application-Query-Delete-Entry) is more efficient for multiple deletes than
Application-Delete-Entry. I haven't tested that, but it seems to make
sense. It is like deleting a list of entries on your screen at once instead
of one at a time. At very least, it should cut out the GLE call to refresh
the entry list after each delete.

Absolutely it would be more efficient and I agree that is preferred-the
trick is to figure out a way to simply call it once versus for every
record in the table. As mentioned previously, you could enable your
escalation against a one record table used specifically to issue single
commands like this against other tables but there should be a way to
handle this within the same table.

It is interesting that it appears to work on all of your other servers

In circumstances like this, I've always put the escalation on the Group form,
with a qualification of Group ID = 0 ("Public").  Since the form name in the
Run Process is decoupled from the form the escalation is attached to, this
works.  It has another benefit in that the Group form has few records, and is
usually pinned in memory in the database, so the query is low cost.

Or you can add a field to the form that says delete, then the escalation
will run and set the field to deleting. Then a filter that fires on
modify to delete the record. That way escalations are not tied up
deleting and the actual delete happens in filter which is fast.

database, so the query is low cost.

Absolutely it would be more efficient and I agree that is
preferred—the trick is to figure out a way to simply call it once
versus for every record in the table. As mentioned previously, you
could enable your escalation against a one record table used
specifically to issue single commands like this against other tables
but there should be a way to handle this within the same table.

It is interesting that it appears to work on all of your other servers
though without any problem so perhaps there is something set up to
handle this situation?

Actually the Delete still happens using the Escalation thread so it is
tied up while the delete is processing. You can tell this by looking at
the filter logs and seeing that the filter is running under RPC 390603.

Or you can add a field to the form that says delete, then the escalation
will run and set the field to deleting. Then a filter that fires on
modify to delete the record. That way escalations are not tied up
deleting and the actual delete happens in filter which is fast.

Re: Application-Delete-Query-Entry gives errors [pjm]

2008-05-29 Thread Michelle L
Hi, Rick:

I think you have the gist of what everyone's saying. You already know
that it is more efficient to point that escalation at the group form where
groupId=0 or 1...or whatever. I believe your question was related to the
error messages you're receiving. And although you understand that there
are different options for building the escalation, the point is that the
escalation fires in other environments without error.

Since I've seen this behavior before, I have to ask. This server doesn't
happen to be a part of a server group, where it is possible that the
escalations attempted to run on more than one server did it? A similar
phenomenon occurred here. We didn't usually see the Entry does not exist
in database error on this particular escalation that runs nightly; so we
knew something was wrong.

We found that the error was occurring in the arerror.log of one of the
servers and not in the other. We then found that for whatever reason
during the last update, the "Disable Escalations" configuration setting
was unchecked on two out of three of our servers. In our case, two
servers should have that option checked.

The same thing happened with Archiving. It should only be enabled on one
out of three of our servers.

Not sure if that helps or not.

Thanks,
Michelle

This is running on 390603, which is why we're multi-threading the
Escalations in real life.

I have to say that running this against another form is a new concept for
me, though it makes more sense as I think more about it. I must have missed
that day in training, because this is the first I've heard of it. :) I
have also just heard that running it in the Else action vs. the If action
will ensure that the action only fires once. Don't know why, but I'll give
it a shot.

No, Michelle, this is not part of a server group - yet. The error might
make more sense if it were, or if we were running Application-Delete-Entry,
which we're not. The error seems as if it's running a GetListEntry after
each delete, which I didn't think it was, and then reporting the error after
each of those Gets. I have more to noodle and test on tomorrow, for sure.

Thanks for your input!

Hey Listers,

I have several Data Exchanges that seem "stuck". I ran the
Verify and now they report on "EIE is busy verifying this dataexchange."
The button stays on Get Result too. I have restarted both the AIE and the
ARS. Even bounced the box. I started to trace the workflow, but I don't
have the luxury of that time right now. I'm hoping someone else has run
into this issue and knows. I can find nothing in the docs either.

Are you querying a value in an ARS form? AIE 7.1.00.002 introduces a
fatal bug that is not present in patch 001 that trashes the query string
rather badly. No exchange with a qualification on an ARS form field will
run. Try turning on debug and look in the debug log for the point of
failure. I had to wait for them to send me a fix before I could apply
patch 002; the fix will be in patch 003.

Hey Listers,

I have several Data Exchanges that seem "stuck". I ran
the Verify and now they report on "EIE is busy verifying this
dataexchange." The button stays on Get Result too. I have restarted
both the AIE and the ARS. Even bounced the box. I started to trace the
workflow, but I don't have the luxury of that time right now. I'm
hoping someone else has run into this issue and knows. I can find
nothing in the docs either.

Re: AIE 7.1 Get Results Stuck

2008-05-29 Thread Brian Gillock
Thanks Chris, but I'm not performing a query on an ARS form, just the
external DB. It also runs fine. I'm getting my data in no problem. It
only affects the Verify function and doesn't really prevent me from
continuing, it's just kind of an irritant. Thanks again for that info
though, I am probably going to need that in the not too distant future.

Are you querying a value in an ARS form? AIE 7.1.00.002 introduces a fatal
bug that is not present in patch 001 that trashes the query string rather
badly. No exchange with a qualification on an ARS form field will run. Try
turning on debug and look in the debug log for the point of failure. I had
to wait for them to send me a fix before I could apply patch 002; the fix
will be in patch 003.

Re: AIE 7.1 Get Results Stuck

2008-05-29 Thread Phil Murnane
Brian:
I've seen that happen in the past.  Restarting the AIE service on the server
seemed to solve the problem for me.  In fact, we had a reproducible situation
where the AIE service was set to automatically start on Windows, and it would;
but no matter what, clients couldn't talk to the service unless it was
restarted after the server booted.  That was AIE 7.x with ARS 7.1.0 patch 1 on
Windows Server 2003, and a remote SQL 2005 database.  The workaround that
customer used was to schedule a task to load the service about 5 minutes after
boot.

Re: Application-Delete-Query-Entry gives errors [pjm]

2008-05-29 Thread Steven Pataray
Hi Rick,I was getting the error's when I used that command. I just ended
up archiving the form and setting to delete. This is how I'm cleaning up my
email notifications since I don't delete after it sends. I'm running on ARS
6.3, so it was showing up back then as well.

Java 1.6 have never been tested with ARS 7.1 products - know issue with BMC.
Recommendation is roll-back to 1.5.0_15.

Hi all

Can anyone offer a solution as to how I can solve the problem below. When
Remedy starts I get the message

Action Request System(R) Plug-In Server Version 7.1.00 Patch 002
200802011900

(c) Copyright 2001-2007 BMC Software, Inc.

ld.so.1: arplugin: fatal: relocation error: file
/opt/arsystem/mssharap03/slm/bin/libomfobjiefilapi.so: symbol
__1cNIostream_init2t6M_v_: referenced symbol not found

(ARNOTE 0)

Tried 4 restarts in 30 seconds. I give up at Wed May 28 09:50:07 2008

Arserver actuall starts but when I log into Remedy and attempt to have a
look at say Server Information I get a "ARERR [8760] Cannot establish a
network connection to the AR System Plug-In server : mssharap03 (2011) :
RPC: Miscellaneous tli error - An event requires attentionError 0" message
and the system information form is not populated with data.

KM-00024024 - talks about unable to find the path the JVM.DLL

Env. - new install of Remedy

Solaris 10

Oracle 10g remote

ARS 7.1 P2

ITSM 7.0.3 unpatched

BMC_SLA_JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jre

JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jre

Java version is 1.6 JDK

I installed ITSM Asset, Change, Incident, Problem without incident. I then
installed (after many attempts) SLM (it's a beast because there is no
console install).

PATH is

/usr/java/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/dt/bin:/
usr/platform/SUNW,SPARC-Enterprise-T5220/sbin:/opt/sun/bin:/opt/SUNWvts/bin:
/opt/SUNWexplo/bin:/opt/SUNWsneep/bin:/opt/SUNWldm/bin

LD_LIBRARY_PATH is

/opt/arsystem/mssharap03/slm/bin:/opt/ar/mssharap03/bin:/opt/ar/mssharap03/a
pi/lib:/opt/ar/mssharap03/pluginsvr:/usr/java/jre/lib/sparc:/usr/java/jre/li
b/sparc/client:/usr/java/jre/lib/sparc/server:/usr/java/jre/lib/sparc9/serve
r:/usr/openwin/lib

So that would seem to be ok!
