The fact is that I do not have ownership on the LDAP directory, and I have to
use the dn. I cannot add any sn or uid, and the process owner will not make the

Amanullah,

If the form has Public view access then you should see it in the Object List.
I don't like to add objects to OOTB forms but you could add a single button
that performs an Open window action against the ARCHIVE:HPD:Help Desk2 form in
search mode. Then when a user needs access to the Archived data they only need
to click the button and then do a search in the archive form.
You could get fancy and actually let the user enter the incident number and
grab it for the open window action in modify mode so their search is performed
in the active link.

Be aware of what Gavin said about the attachments not being archived. You may
only get to see your archived Helpdesk records.

Good luck,

Yes - they trial last for 30-60 days, and I want to be able to develop without
using my client's server.
Kind of like in the old days when we had UNLIMITED access under demo.

I wasn’t making up something, that was your quote.

But looking back in the archives I see that you called yourself a “Newbie” in a
post dated Feb 2009. By your own words, you’ve only been around this product
for about a year, so you know nothing about the “old days”.

You need to distinguish between DEMO and TRIAL.

DEMO mode offers year round access, full ARS functionality with slight
restrictions, those being 2000 records PER FORM (not total) and 3 fixed
licenses.

TRIAL is completely unlimited access, unlimited records, full functionality,
without fee. Thus TRIAL has a time constraint.

Again:

· If you’re just doing independent development of custom apps, your
technical needs are met. Year round access with full ARS functionality but
limited licenses and limited to 2000 records per form is plenty (the community
has been doing it for years) and you’re just complaining to complain.

· If you’re developing for a legit client who has implemented the ITSM
Suite, they need a licensed dev server.

· If you’re developing independently against the ITSM Suite, you have a
valid complaint with regards to the fact that you can’t install it at all and
do anything with it on the development side and I agree with you. BMC should
offer some sort of developer access to the suite.

Lastly, if you’re truly the type of person that makes decisions and advises
clients based on the fact that a company got on your nerves because they don’t
have the exact developer format that you “need” instead of being based on the
real power and long term benefit of the product line, then I feel sorry for
your clients; glad to see you moving on to other products and I wish I knew
your real name so I wouldn’t accidently hire you in the future.

I am not looking for an unlimited Demo. This is not a sales issue. My
technical needs are: a demo with access all year round with a reasonable level
of records. (not 2000) I wish BMC would have consideration for the developers
(i.e. a Developer's Edition so developers can work it). If they offered a
Developer's edition for a reasonable price, I would buy it. They just get on
my nerves - which is why I am looking at other products.

In a message dated 4/19/2010 7:08:42 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time,
timothy.pow...@pbs-consulting.com writes:

But Oracle referred to the needs of his “clients”.

With the BMC Apps statement, you’re headed back to Joe’s point. “if you cannot
justify buying a product in about 60 days, then you do not need the product”.

If you have a client that has the need for an app like the current ITSM Suite
AND they have a need to add custom development to it, then they will have a
development server that is fully licensed and purposed for just that type of
effort. If they don’t they’re fools.

I’ve been with the Remedy line since 3.0 and I don’t recall there ever being a
fully “unlimited access” DEMO version that let you do anything without
restriction.

I do recall that with Helpdesk 4.0 and 4.5 (not sure about 5.0) you could
install that Helpdesk (as well as Change and Asset I believe) with the 3 fixed
license capabilities and 2000 record limitation. The HD installer added 3
application licenses to the mix that could be used with the 3 ARS fixed
licenses. So you could develop against it.

Now if WE want to develop against the current ITSM Suite on our own for OUR
purposes (not a client’s purpose), then I agree that even if you could get the
current suite installed on a DEMO account, it wouldn’t work right or for long.
But I don’t think you can even add the required additional licenses needed for
an install on a DEMO acct.

I am a strong proponent (as many other Listers are) that BMC should add 3 of
all the licenses for the current suite upon installation (like they did in HD
4.x), make sure the default config records are well below 2000 (or increase the
2000 record limit somewhat), so that it can be installed and then developed
against with the DEMO license restrictions. That way we could develop generic
add-ons or enhancements, but still limit the suite so it can’t be used for real
business purposes.

So the main points are:

1) Who has the need

2) What is the need

If a client has the need to develop against the ITSM Apps, then they will have
the dev server resources to do the development (if th

I'm curious about one thing you just said.

One peculiar thing active links can do that filters can't is that if you
want to take the current (transaction) value of a diary field and change it
in any way other than adding to the end, active links are the way to go.
Filters can't do it.

I may be off base on this one.but if you take the proposed action, what
happens is you take the current transaction value and modify
it..true.essentially doing "some string" + "TR.work log"..diaries are
treated as char strings essentially via AL's..but once it hits the
filter.what's in the worklog is already there, so the best you can do is
append to the end.is that what you meant?

One common issue I have seen in a lot of custom Remedy code is the use of
Active Links to enforce business rules, data validation etc. Not always a
good idea, because if the client is not Remedy User, these rules will be
bypassed.

Think API programs, Web Services, Remedy Import, runmacro.exe, DSO and also
transactions initiated by Push Field actions (and macros as well??).

Active links exist/run in Remedy User only (and thru browser/mid-tier, of
course), so unless a record is being created or updated because the user
clicked on the Save button on that very record on Remedy User, active links
(that are set to execute on, say, submit/modify) will never get to execute
on the record.

It still makes sense to write rules/validation using active links, to
provide immediate feedback to the user based on her actions, before the
record is saved. But if the rules need to be enforced all the time, you want
filters as well, as a foolproof gatekeeper. No transaction can bypass them.

--
One thing I learned the hard way (on my RAC exam), was that filters can
throw a message, but not an actionable prompt, such as a Yes/No question. I
had to redo a lot of my code on the exam because of this surprise.
In my defense that was many many years ago and I didn't fully understand how
transactions were processed.

Now I understand that filters can't in any way cause anything to happen at
Remedy User, other than pop a message box after the transaction has
completed (or errored out).
All the messages from that transaction are lumped together in that one pop
up, and the only choice is to click on the "Ok" button. It's not going to
affect the transaction in any way, because it already processed.

For example, you can do this in Active links
Work Log = "Some string" + Work Log

But if you do the same thing in a filter, the result is
Work Log = Work Log + "Some string"

Not a big deal most of the time.

Jason,

I always try and expand the question when I answer because
often the real answer is part of the bigger topic
and just answering the details obscures the real best
practice.

So, as you note in your message, often there are requests
to do things "just because".  Not for any clear
benefit or business value, but just because it might be
cool or someone heard something that they thought
sounds interesting -- regardless of value.  So, first,
it is to remind the requestor that things really should have
uses and clear value before just adding things.
Otherwise systems get out of control, slow, and unwieldy.

This is the
hardest thing for many developers to do because they know that they could just
do it and it is
easier to just do
it than to really work on trying to do it right/best.

However, you always have a case where they say -- just do
it.

So, for these cases, I suggest falling back on the simple
rule:

Active links are for managing the current screen for the
user.  Whether that be messing with visibility or
loading data values or pushing data values to
somewhere.  It can be for pre-validating or pre-checking to
give
more timely messages.  It can be for giving lists of
values to select from or auto-filling related fields based
on
the response to one field.  It may be to start an
operation or to trigger an activity.  At the end of the day, it
is
all about helping the user interact with the current
screen.

Filters are for everything else that is transaction based

I am not looking for an unlimited Demo. This is not a sales issue. My
technical needs are: a demo with access all year round with a reasonable
level of records. (not 2000) I wish BMC would have consideration for the
developers (i.e. a Developer's Edition so developers can work it). If they
offered a Developer's edition for a reasonable price, I would buy it. They
just get on my nerves - which is why I am looking at other products.

With the BMC Apps statement, you’re headed back to Joe’s point. “if you
cannot justify buying a product in about 60 days, then you do not need the
product”.
If you have a client that has the need for an app like the current ITSM
Suite AND they have a need to add custom development to it, then they will
have a development server that is fully licensed and purposed for just that
type of effort. If they don’t they’re fools.
I’ve been with the Remedy line since 3.0 and I don’t recall there ever
being a fully “unlimited access” DEMO version that let you do anything
without restriction.
I do recall that with Helpdesk 4.0 and 4.5 (not sure about 5.0) you could
install that Helpdesk (as well as Change and Asset I believe) with the 3
fixed license capabilities and 2000 record limitation. The HD installer added
3 application licenses to the mix that could be used with the 3 ARS fixed
licenses. So you could develop against it.
Now if WE want to develop against the current ITSM Suite on our own for
OUR purposes (not a client’s purpose), then I agree that even if you could
get the current suite installed on a DEMO account, it wouldn’t work right or
for long. But I don’t think you can even add the required additional
licenses needed for an install on a DEMO acct.
I am a strong proponent (as many other Listers are) that BMC should add 3
of all the licenses for the current suite upon installation (like they did
in HD 4.x), make sure the default config records are well below 2000 (or
increase the 2000 record limit somewhat), so that it can be installed and
then developed against with the DEMO license restrictions. That way we could
develop generic add-ons or enhancements, but still limit the suite so it can’
t be used for real business purposes.
So the main points are:
1) Who has the need
2) What is the need
If a client has the need to develop against the ITSM Apps, then they will
have the dev server resources to do the development (if they have half a
brain).
If “we” have the need/desire to develop against the ITSM Apps
independently, then I agree that “we” have no avenue for that effort.
If “we” have the need/desire to develop custom workflow independently
just using the AR System, then we do have an avenue for that effort.

Re: {Remedy ARS} Re: Active Link External $PROCESS$ on AR Server 7.5

2010-04-20 Thread Juan Ingles
Does it still exit with status 0x86 even after adding exit 0?

If so, that means your script is not getting to the exit statement and
exiting out with that exit code.
You might not notice this on the command line, as the command line
doesn't really care what the return code is.

ARS uses the exit code to test for errors. If it is anything but 0,
you will get the "Error while performing active link action" message
even if the script was "successful."

Re: Default Web Views

2010-04-20 Thread josepht
You could create the Web View as a Web Alternate (Fixed) view type, and then
set the Default Form View to the view that you want to be reached by the
User Tool (which should be a Standard view). Then have a general rule that
always opens that form in the Web View. What will happen is users using the
MidTier will be taken to the web view, but users on the User Tool will not
be able to reach the Web View so they will be automatically directed to the
Default Form View.

I am not sure if you would get the same results from setting the Web View as
the Default Form View. It seems like open the first available Standard view,
so if you only have the two views would work. But if you have more than just
the Web View and the User Tool View, it might open a view that you don't
want. Again I haven't tested this way it just occured to me as I was typing
this reply.

I think you would be better off creating workflow that opens these views
based on how user is logging in, but I guess that is a matter of personal
preference.

Hi Fred,

Removing the space after the colon was exactly the same thing I did
after starting to receive errors. I also used the exit(0) line :-)
I have no idea why it fails, the only way left seems a restart as

Re: {Remedy ARS} Re: Active Link External $PROCESS$ on AR Server 7.5

2010-04-20 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
I may be picky here but when I do an external $PROCESS$ from an AL I don't put
a space after the colon
  $PROCESS$ @@:/mypath/script -p1 parameter1 -p2 parameter2

The 0x86 is what the script is exiting with as a status. On scripts I don't
want to return an error to Remedy I exit them with an exit 0 line.

AW: {Remedy ARS} Re: Active Link External $PROCESS$ on AR Server 7.5

2010-04-20 Thread Conny Martin
Koray,

when you restart arserverd in your shell and then execute the AL with run
process you will perhaps see some helpful error-messages.

I think it's something related to the environment (ENV-Vars like
LD_LIBRARY_PATH or something like that).

To execute your script with the same env. as arserverd do the following.

//bin/arsystem env /mypath/script -p1 parameter1 -p2 parameter2

Kind Regards Conny

I am trying the -o (output to file) option, which may work (working on

I am considering a Perl script that will take a ticket number and
simply respond with something like yes or no. I will likely turn it
into an .exe using perl2exe. We use a lot of Perl, but all of it is on
the server side and on Solaris. This will be the first time doing it

Before I go that route, I want to pick your brain and see if I have
overlooked any other simple solution.

Thanks in advance.

Script's working quite perfect. I tried copying&pasting "/mypath/ script -p1
parameter1 -p2 parameter2" to UNIX shell and it returns as expected. So it
can't be the syntax.

How can an external program query to see if a ticket # exists?

2010-04-20 Thread Rabi Tripathi
Hi all,
I need to provide a way a program can ask Remedy if a ticket number exists.

Web services is out (mismatch of Mid-tier and ARS versions). I am looking for
any other simple solution.

I tried a query with runmacro.exe, hoping i can somehow trick it into letting
me know if the query matched any record or not, but it turns out its not
designed to output anything to standard output, other than "macro xx processing
completed".
I am trying the -o (output to file) option, which may work (working on getting
the query criteria right), but appears to be very slow.

I am considering a Perl script that will take a ticket number and simply
respond with something like yes or no. I will likely turn it into an .exe using
perl2exe. We use a lot of Perl, but all of it is on the server side and on
Solaris. This will be the first time doing it on Windows, so I wish I could
avoid having to open this can of worms to build and maintain.

Before I go that route, I want to pick your brain and see if I have overlooked
any other simple solution.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure why, but we had to use an Active Link to set a customQual to do

Active Link External $PROCESS$ on AR Server 7.5

2010-04-20 Thread koray
Hello together,

I have upgraded my ARS servers from 6.3 to 7.5 and facing with some
major problems since then.
The previous syntax to run an external process via an Active Link was

$PROCESS$ @@: /mypath/script -p1 parameter1 -p2 parameter2

and it worked perfect. But since the 7.5 upgrade I have been receiving
errors:

-> Passed qualification -- perform if actions
  0: Set Fields

 Process: /mypath/script -p1 parameter1 -p2
parameter2
Error while performing active link action

Do you have any idea? What am I doing wrong here?
I even tried double-quoting the parameters but nothing seems to work.

Also removing ":" character from active link results with no error but
returns null.

Thanks in advance!

Having worked (for almost two and half years) in the group which has

it is a moot point as this position was recently filled with someone who

Re: COLSUM

2010-04-20 Thread Guillaume Rheault
LJ,

This is definitely a very good example of why sometimes you have to bypass the
ARS layer and go straight to the database, and take advantage of the broader
functionality available at the database layer; SQL functions is a perfect
example.
I don't think ARS will ever provide all the functionality that you can have at
the database layer, since anyway database functionality keeps evolving as ARS
is evolvingfor instance, in Oracle 10g and 11g, you can use regular
expressions in SQL statements...very powerful. Will ARS provide regular
expressions in SQL statements? probably not, not until DB2 and SQL server can
do that; and that's OK, 'cause you can execute direct SQL from ARS.

Hi,

I now understand what you are saying.

I guess that when it reads for example 3000 records, it just drops record
1-2000 and uses the trailing 1000 records.

So for you, this results in a massive number of SQL-searches instead of
reading through the table once.

In this case, I guess a direct SQL call would be only workable solution...

I think that the best way for BMC to handle/implement this would be to use
the chunk-size you specify for the table-field, with a possible
maximum-limit equal to the system wide max-entries-returned-by-get-list...

I must confess that I typically work with fewer records in filter-tables.

Data Visualization - Report Question

2010-04-20 Thread mathew thomas

Hello Remedy Users,

I am trying to use the Remedy Data Visulization Field to display some Remedy
Reports.

When I run the report from the Report Selection form it uses the Report
Qualification, however if the Report is launched on a DV field it does not use
the Qualification and does a 1=1.

Any idea why would that be?

Thanks

I have not done this recently.

My experience was that you needed to add a unique attribute to the
directory that could be used to retrieve the actual record.

If you are only doing a table-refresh to load data, you will not need
this, as the system only performs a single "search".

If you are using set-fields or push-fields, the unique max-15-character-key is
needed.

Re: ARDBC LDAP

2010-04-20 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
I have not done this recently.

My experience was that you needed to add a unique attribute to the
directory that could be used to retrieve the actual record.

If you are only doing a table-refresh to load data, you will not need
this, as the system only performs a single "search".

If you are using set-fields or push-fields, the unique
max-15-character-key is needed.

Re: COLSUM

2010-04-20 Thread Misi Mladoniczky

That's the thingthe table itself isn't set to chunkthe chunking is
happening at the server and affects ALL tables the server needs to read.
The table in question has 4 columns, all that need to at some point have a
colsum done on them. Based on my reading of the server side table chunking,
it's designed to keep the memory usage down by handling x records at a
time...but in this case that's not what it doesit simply causes the
server to increase the chunk size by that amount until it's dealing with the
entire tableand it does this automatically when you ask for a
colsumit knows that all you want is a sum of the values, yet it does
massively more work than is necessary to get the information and ends up
taking massively more time than necessarythus I was looking for Doug's
view on the subject as he seems to always have an eloquent response to such
design questions.

Hi,

I seems to be doing what you asked it to do.

The way both client and FLTR tables work, is by filling the table with
data (in memory).

If you tell it to chunk, it apparently reads it that way.

Create a new table-field without chinking, with a single column, and do
the COLSUM there instead.

2010-04-20 Thread Reiser, John J

Good luck,

I guess the only option then is to look at a database back-up! Guess
this shows the value of testing, testing, testing.

Once an entry has been deleted, then it's over to the database guys for

you specifically did not archive these along with the main incidents,
then I suspect that OOB workflow will have deleted these entries...

Re: how to retrieve incidents which are already been archived

2010-04-20 Thread Coleman, Gavin
Archiving in ITSM is a complex operation. The first thing to define is what
data do you want to archive? To determine this, you need to speak to your user
base (Do they want just Incidents, or Incident Work Logs, or Incident
Attachments - what do they expect to happen if you want to archive an Incident
that is associated with another ticket?

Once you have determined this, then you can begin to plan how to archive. This
is a very rough plan of how we did this here:

1. Determine the archive qualification for the base form.

2. Determine the relationship between the base form and child forms
(Worklogs, attachments etc)

3. Write a SQL update that will set a flag on the child forms when the
base form tickets are ready to be archived.

4. Archive the child forms - using the Archive flag

5. Using a SQL update, set the archive flag on the base form

6. Archive the base forms - using the Archive flag

This method was determined to be the most efficient. This way you can keep all
your relationships between Incidents, and the SQL updates are used because if
you have significant numbers of records to archive, setting the Archive flag
using Remedy workflow uses a significant amount of Filter processing.

Hope this helps anybody who is thinking of archiving anything in ITSM.

I guess the only option then is to look at a database back-up! Guess
this shows the value of testing, testing, testing.

Once an entry has been deleted, then it's over to the database guys for
back-up retrieval...

BTW - please send all replies to the arslist. I don't need to be copied

Good luck with getting those attachments back. If the attachments were
stored in HPD:Attachments or HPD:WorkLog (Depending on ITSM version) and
you specifically did not archive these along with the main incidents,
then I suspect that OOB workflow will have deleted these entries...

Hi Jack,
Archive information.
Select archive option of the form HPD:Help Desk then select Archive
Type: Copy to Archive and Delete from Source
Archive to Form: ARCHIVE:HPD:Help Desk2
Qualification
  'Status'="Closed"
By using the above method I successfully archived incidents.

Now remedy user needs attachment of some incidents which are archived.
That's why I need to retrieve some incidents.

Re: how to retrieve incidents which are already been archived

2010-04-20 Thread Coleman, Gavin
Good luck with getting those attachments back. If the attachments were stored
in HPD:Attachments or HPD:WorkLog (Depending on ITSM version) and you
specifically did not archive these along with the main incidents, then I
suspect that OOB workflow will have deleted these entries...

Thanks,

Gavin Coleman

Hi Jack,
Archive information.
Select archive option of the form HPD:Help Desk then select Archive Type: Copy
to Archive and Delete from Source
Archive to Form: ARCHIVE:HPD:Help Desk2
Qualification
  'Status'="Closed"
By using the above method I successfully archived incidents.

Now remedy user needs attachment of some incidents which are archived. That's
why I need to retrieve some incidents.

Thanks & Regards

Retrieve them for what use (who, how, for what purpose, etc)? Also, how
did you archive them?
