I've always given mine to the Salvation Army. Twice a year, I clean the closets out and good, clean, wearable garments, are accepted. You can also take a tax deduction. On the 1st Avenue side, is where you can take the clothing, shoes, appliances, knick knacks, aka dust catchers and Cha-chis, books, furniture, even canned goods, you don't want. Turned off by the food giveaway at St. Peter's Thrift Store, now, defunct, I began carting my stuff, over there, on Main St. Many staffers are volunteers and are very cordial and friendly. My organization, hosts, table sales, chinese auctions, etc., and I tend to buy the new things, like candles and gift sets. Many stores that have items they couldn't sell, wind up over there! Still in their packaging, brand new! I usually have 2 shopping bags, of new items, to generate sales. The money from sales, goes toward the general fund, that pays for postage, copy paper, etc. My organization, like the Salvation Army, is non-profit, all volunteer and lobbies for veterans issues. I collect white porcelain and have found really unusual pieces, over there, CHEAP! If you want to get rid of your stuff, take it to the Salvation Army. The clothing goes to families in distress, from fires, floods and other natural disasters. I had never been in the building on Asbury Avenue, until the fire, last month. I needed to get indoors, from the heat and found refuge there. I will never forget them, for the soft chair and the cold water. I wish everyone in this group, could send them a dollar! They really provided a safe place to congregate and rest, after standing outdoors, for hours. I think of the commercial played during Christmas, with their bell and donation holder. I'm so glad I never passed the pot by, without dropping something in. My daughter, who is 36, does the same, because I would always give her a dollar, to drop into the pot, when she was but a toddler. See, you have me all worked up, now! [AsburyPark] Re: I guess the war against litter in Library Square Park is...
Thanks Mario. I had 2 small victories this morning. One was a nice conversation with the assistant City Manager about fixing the lighting in the park. He said they'd look into it and get back to me later this week. Hopefully that will work out. The second victory went like this. I left my house to walk my dog, and encountered a nice couple who my dog wanted to say hello to. They were really nice, they petted my furry pal, and continued on their walk. A few steps later the guy just drops his giant styrofoam 64 oz. coffee cup in the middle of the street and keeps on walking. His girlfriend said something, and he mumbled and kept going. I then walked over and simply said Excuse me, why would you drop that there when there's a garbage can right there on the corner? He looked at me, said he's sorry, then very slowly walked over and picked it up. His girlfriend also apologized and said that he has a problem with this, and he needs to get over it and do the right thing. So, this time, he did the right thing. Maybe this is how to effect change, one person at a time. I understand that it would probably be hard for somebody to call someone out on littering, but if it worked for me, maybe it'll work for others. When I think back to the 70's while Nixon was president, I recall that there were frequent commercials on TV like Give a hoot, don't pollute and that iconic crying Indian. We don't have that anymore. i tend to think that it's not taught in schools anymore, or at least not in Asbury Park schools. I think that's a great place to start. Teach the kids not to litter, and teach them to pass that on to their parents. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: No need for second thoughts or apologies. I thought about deleting the post, but I figure it's better to be honest and let it stay. I guess part of the problem for me and litter is that I've never lived in a place where it's so prevelent. It truly disgusts me. The nearest local town I lived in prior to moving here was Allenhurst, which we all know is pretty spotless. Same goes for Edgewater up north. When I think back to around the year 2000, I was living in Allenhurst, and dating a girl here in AP. Occasionally, me and my dog would spend the night at her place, and I'd take my dog for a walk in AP and back then I vowed never to live in a place this dirty. So I guess I can only blame myself for moving to a place that had a problem I already knew about. Personally, I can't relate to the mentality of a person who thinks it's ok to just drop their trash anywhere they want to. I guess growing up in the 70's and watching that commercial with the Indian crying had an effect on me. Anyhow, I apologize to my friends here for my frequent rants on this subject. ** See what's new at http://www.aol.com Yahoo! It doesn't look like new windows are acutally going in. I think their building a dummy wall, with half tempoary windows. Not sure why they'd do that, but we will see what happens. I have no clue about the window on the sunset boardwalk building. Again, time will tell. I don't think they'd go thru the trouble to simply add light for workers. That one window wouldn't do much for the space that's in there anyway. charlie Yahoo! Give a hungry man a fishing pole and not a fish. Spend 40 hours 80 miles out on a 36' boat fishing. You can keep the $1000 reel and rod and I'll take the fish. Give that fishing pole here and that person would be selling it on the corner for $5.00. Plenty of poles have been given out in AP. Time to take the time and teach them how to use it. [AsburyPark] Its the Small Stuff ....Library Square, West Side, All Around Town...
Do some research into the success of Rudy Giuliani cleaning up NYC. Note: Public Space..Kelling Wilson... Here's an excerpt from an article about it: ... The solution lay in asking which crooks should be pursued, and what conclusions could be drawn from their activity. A revolution in policing had begun with a pair of academics, George Kelling and James Q. Wilson, and a handful of smart cops in New York and Boston. They emphasized the importance of recapturing the public space by nabbing petty offenders who often turned out to be major ones, and by tracking the ebb and flow of crime patterns daily, the better to react quickly. But you had to have your ears open to know this was going on. City Journal ran articles by Kelling and others on the new policing in the early '90s. Fred Siegel, America's only witty urbanologist, brought them to Mayor Dinkins' attention: He brushed me off. Not Giuliani. He is much more wonkish and intellectual than people give him credit for, Siegel says. Because of the tough-guy exterior, they don't notice. ... Yahoo! I'm sorry to say it, but those people, and the endless stream of cars that seems to be visiting there, are a bunch of slobs. Much of the daily garbage I encounter in my neighborhood is discarded liquor and beer containers. This happens every single day. I've never seen anything like it. 2 houses away from mine is a recently restored home that has a nicely landscaped yard, and they spent money to replace the depleted grass on both sides with sod. I'm close to giving up. But before I do, I'm working on a meeting on Sunday with people from Trinty Church, so hopefully something good will come of that. Maybe I could convince them that a good incentive for people looking to utilize their charity services would be to equip some of them as volunteers to help clean up the park on a daily basis. Give them some clean up supplies and send them into the park. Maybe it would be good for both the people seeking charitiable help, as well as keeping an otherwise beautiful park clean. Of course, I'm constantly reminded of how Europe deals with their parks and street cleanup. And of course it takes money that we don't have. Anyhow, in most European cities, you will see clean up crews every single night cleaning the streets and parks, and emptying the trash cans. It's almost like what happens at Disney everyday. And from what I've seen from my many years spent overseas, people are less prone to trash their cities, so theres less crap to clean up. Yahoo! I worked in the city when G was mayor then went out. It was a noticeable difference in the appearance of the city/streets - at least to an outsider like me. Speaking of City Manager, should I be dismayed that Reidy hasn't responded to an email I sent him nearly a week ago? Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Its the Small Stuff ....Library Square, West Side, All Around Town...
Having worked in the South Bronx for many years, I noticed much litter and graffiti throughout Boro especially in the poorest neighborhoods.??Once a slew of affordable and subsidized housing was built in vacant and burned out lots and made available to the residents,?the majority of residents?were now able to?purchase their homes from the government at a nominal rate, and the litter and graffiti practically dried up.? These new owners now took pride in their new homes and worked very hard in keeping the neighborhood clean.? My observation was, give people a stake in the neighborhood and they will keep it clean. -Original Message- From: oakdorf [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wed, 24 Oct 2007 1:10 pm Subject: [AsburyPark] Re: Its the Small Stuff Library Square, West Side, All Around Town... I did appreciate the cleaned up subways and summonses given for littering etc; but I didn't understand the uproar over the crusade against jaywalking -- I guess because I mainly used the subways or just walked. In Asbury Park, I don't feel intimidated by the jaywalkers-- just annoyed; but I suspect such behaviors do keep away some of the people businesses here are looking to attract. Quality of life issues need attention here -- that is, some leadership and a very visible public education campaign. NW neighborhoods are relatively tidy, but I've noticed that visitors entering and leaving via Sunset Avenue often throw litter from their car windows. I'll bet they wouldn't do the same traveling through Allenhurst and other surrounding towns. I know you can be stopped in those communities for throwing cigarette butts out your window. ** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

This is from a blog that I've never heard of, but at first glance I get the impression that the author is group member evosap also known as Gabrielle. Interesting, and sad how she views our group. And Gabrielle, in case you are just skimming this groups post, you probably missed the park about the park and it's lighting, and me finding a fully intact hypodermic needle there on Sunday. Sorry to hear that you are so bitter about people trying to make a difference in their LOCAL community. Jack Heartbreak Not the first time. Not the last. But it sucks. A gloom, slipping faith, anger. A desire to lash out, hit back, verbally pummel. Not a man. Those heartbreaks are easy. The heartbreaks that get me are the political and societal ones. People being greedy, selfish and stupid. Intellectually lazy. I know there are good things happening in the world. But right now I feel like I live in a boil of hatred, fear, anger and people that care deeply about minor inconveniences that confront anyone in an urban environment. I need to stop reading the AP list. DeSeno has been absent so it made me realize just how stupid the rest of the comments are. These people are obsessed with calling the cops, complaining about litter, blinking street lights, graffiti and construction noise. We live in a world where there is some extraordinary ugliness. Children being sold into sex slavery, parents being murdered in front of their children, US mercenaries murdering civiliansMyanmar, Sudan, Peak Oil, water shortages...take your pick. How does a streetlight stress you out when you know these things? I know a dark park in Asbury can spell trouble, but how much in comparison? (I know that cops patrol library park, I got busted for making out in a car there oncealthough now that I think about it, maybe they were called! Sex is so disturbing to the sexless.) What is missing from your life when homeless people disturb you; when you need to call the police because some kids are smoking pot or a dirty guy asks you for change. You can't possibly understand the depth of the problems in our world, or even our city. I have to wonder what it is like to live in that skin. This is my guess...lots of tv, SAD diet (standard american diet...the one that any thinking person understands is poison), dissatisfying sex life, if any...maybe only missionary, or they are always the bottom. Viagra. Allergy medicine. These are the folks that marketing wizards are made for. They believe commercials. Fear them. Need to be an us. The AP list has got me down and wanting to be a little mean. And I am still bummed about the rape scenes at the lanes. I know that every sentient being has buddha potential. You have no idea about the efforts I make in our city. Second - whining - next time you find a hypodermic needle any place in the city, buy all means, keep quiet about it. When there is a cleanup of the park, you are welcome to come. Currently Trinity Church runs a food pantry several days a week and a soup kitchen on Saturday. Most of the people using the program are truly in need and the church does a good job reaching out to them. However, the church also gives hand outs to substance abusers who loiter in Library Park and make life miserable for for those who live in the vicinity. Residents should lobby the church to change it's policy. A small percentage of Trinity's guests have no respect for public private property. In my view, the church has a responsibilty not to allow its guests to ruin the quality of life in our neighborhood. The church should identify who these people are and direct them to the substance abuse programs they really need. __ __ Email and AIM finally together.
