[AsburyPark] Jersey Girl Atkins talks up Asbury Park in Boston
Atkins: a different type of Jersey girl Singer reflects on her home, her ‘City’ and the Boss Nicole Atkins’ debut full-length, “Neptune City,” canonizes her New Jersey hometown. But it couldn't be further from the rock bravado precedent set by Jersey boy/god Bruce Springsteen.… Full text at http://tinyurl.com/57nchj ] (Photo Caption) Rising: Atkins has come to terms with her regional roots. She lives two miles away from Neptune City now, in Asbury Park. “It’s all these beautiful 1920s seaside facades, all broken down ghost town, ” she says. “It’s gorgeous. But it used to be Dogtown — lots of gang activity and surfers. The gay community moved in and now it’s all artists and upstarts. It’s gone through a nice revitalization.” Atkins has also come around — on a guy who, rock-wise, put Asbury Park on the map. “I grew up in a town where every band in town wanted to be Bruce Springsteen and everybody had a story and was like, ‘I know Bruce Springsteen, man,’” she scoffs. “I didn't like the whole ‘Rosalita’-era. But I never heard him do it — I just heard bad imitations.” Then she read an article on the making of “Born to Run” while recording her album. She turned the corner. “Now I love him,” she says. “I see him in town from time to time, and we'll sit and have a drink and talk. ... He’s seriously the coolest guy ever made.” It’s hard to resist giving Atkins a hard time, now she’s “that guy” who brags about knowing Bruce Springsteen. “Oh, yeah,” she coos. “He'll come into my friend’s bar and ask about me, and I won't even be like [casual]. I'll be like, ‘Me? Really? Tell me! Tell me! What'd he say? Is this Juicy Jen from the lanes? Funny you should bring up rape. Last year some time I was at the lanes watching a band, and on the screen behind the band you guys were showing clips of rape scenes. It was really strange. I was exhausted so I wasn't reacting, but I remember thinking wow, if i had been raped, this would be really disturbing to me. Pretty sure a woman who was there complained. I saw her talk to some of the women there and the film was changed. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to be ok with footage like that shown in a place I worked or ran. Sorry this discussion has bored you. It does get that way. I just like to get to the bottom of things, like why does Tommy try to divert potential discussions of the city budget into personal brouhahas. What would you like to talk about since we are boring you? --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, juicy jenn [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: wow- Snore..snore..wake us up when we are back to talking about things that matter to the 75% of the people that are on this group.. Yes, Bush the reason that Americans bought houses they couldn't afford and then used them like ATMs. He is the reason Americans used their charge cards until they couldn't anymore. No one is responsible for their own actions anymore. It isn't going to make a difference who is in the White House now or in two years the results will be the same. Our economy is based upon Americans spending and we can't anymore so how can it recover? Provide MORE credit for people so they, and the country, can get deeper in the hole? We don't manufacture anything here anymore what we have for industry is like a third world country. [AsburyPark] Council Meeting - Budget
At last nights CM the sale of City issued Bonds came up. I don't know the details, however the discussion was about selling approximately $2.7 Million worth. Councilman Keady asked what the impact would if they could not be sold. After a several round-about non-answers he pressed the issue of what would be the negative consequences to the City financially if they were not sold. Final Answer - Not good. The attitude displayed by the rest of our leadership was disturbing. As if asking questions was somehow anti-something That any hint of a potential problem should not be discussed I raised a budget issue also --- (separate topic) Werner Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: It's Official: Help to Homeowners Now Completely Out of Bailout Plans
Ok, I hear you. Keady has never condemned the acts of Karenga. I don't really care about Councilman Keady's personal opinions on Columbus day or Kwanzaa. I care that as a councilman he treats them with fairness and a sense of responsibility to the city. Given what he has posted here, that seems to be the case. I have never seen Keady bash Columbus day from the dais. Perhaps it is not wise for councilmen to meld their personal passions with duties as an elected official. As a voter, his attention to transparency and communication with the community trumps that lack of wisdom. I understand your gripe and I don't think its that way off. I just don't share your personal offense and it really seems you have a personal issue with Keady. If you are going to comment on what I write, please read it first. I said that He is unsupportive of the City's Columbus and Kwanaa celebrations. Not in general, the City's celebration. That's what he opposes. That's His position, and you can't change that. That being said, he actually does oppose Columbus Celebrations in general, evidenced by his past vitriolic attacks on the celebration in public, not printed here. He wants Columbus celebrations infused with bad stories of Columbus. He does not similarly insist those who celebrate Kwanzaa infuse their ceremonies with terrible crimes of Karenga. That is His hyporcrisy which I've repeated over and over that neither He nor you nor any other of His supporters will comment on. Now go ahead and reply without again commenting on that differing treatment by Him of the two groups. Comment on something else so you don't have to face that he's wrong. I'll just cite it again after that, and you can ignore it again and 'll ask you again and you'll ignore it again and it will never end. Let's not do that. [AsburyPark] Council Meeting - Lighting Costs
At last nights CM the budget/bond discussion led me to make comment about the large waste being displayed by both the City and the Developers in electric consumption. I brought to their attention the large number of industrial light fixtures that are on utility poles, City property and the ConHall. My point was that there are a lot of redundant, unneeded fixtures that are costing everyone $$$ to operate. Some utility poles have 3 separate lights on them in the same location. The ConHall has beautiful 1930s lighting that is being drowned out by unneeded flood lights. I asked who is responsible for the costs of publicly located fixtures, my 3 minutes were up and there was no answer, on to business. Later on during one of the Ordinance hearings I raised 'point-of-order' and demanded an answer. Finally got one.. The City pays the costs of lighting. That would be the taxpayers. It would reduce our budget deficit to remove redundant lighting and use only energy efficient fixtures. The developers would benefit financially also to follow the same path. Again, no comment or discussion from our leaders... Blank Stares. Werner Yahoo! Juicy Jen don't sweat it I think the discussion has ended. Sorry it bored you. To me the real topic was the claims of those on this board that they are in Asbury Park because of a great respect for diversity and tolerance for people who belong to groups other than they do. I learned a great deal about those who post here regarding those claims. I'll keep in mind always what I learned here about watching them try to put those ideas in practice, contrary to the flowery language they type when they discuss diversity and tolerance in the abstract. I don't want to start a conversation with you about Columbus, but since you opined, please do some reading about a guy named de Bobadilla. The bad stories of Columbus came from him - Columbus' enemy who wanted Columbus' job as Governor. His claims were first accepted (after his full 2 week investigation) but then debunked 500 years ago. Folks who want Columbus to look bad have resurrected his debunked claims. They bury in a footnotes that the claims were debunked 500 years ago. I'm changing the topic heading so we don't see that whole Lie thing posted any more. Gabbi my answer to your budget question was not flippant. I was moving the discussion along by narrowing the focus. Much of the budget is mandatory spending. You can't touch it. It's mandatory. The three large areas of discretionary spending are Police, Fire and Public Works. That's where you have to look to save money. You could throw in Administration too. My point last time was that I doubt anyone in AP is going to want to cut the police and fire budgets (I could be wrong). Those are the areas that you are likely to spend the most time looking at. I'm not being flippant and trying to end the discussion. I'm trying now like last time to get it going. If anyone wants to get the budget I'll pledge the use of my equipment to turn it into a pdf and put it online so we can see it and discuss it. But I know this board - all talk no action. That being said, he actually does oppose Columbus Celebrations in general, evidenced by his past vitriolic attacks on the celebration in public, not printed here. [AsburyPark] Re: Council Meeting - Lighting Costs
As obvious as dealing with your personal electric consumption habits. Another reason to get a formal citizen discussion of the budget together. line by line as keady suggested. Or at least get some kind of report from the citizen budget committee. isn't there one? have any idea how much AP spend on electricity? how does it compare to other comparable cities? --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, wernerapnj [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: At last nights CM the budget/bond discussion led me to make comment about the large waste being displayed by both the City and the Developers in electric consumption. [AsburyPark] Re: Budget
Awesome. But the budget as it looks now is pretty incomprehensible. There must be a way to simplify it. Though maybe a first step is to simply create a PDF of it. The city should have it in that form. I am willing to put in some time to do data entry into a spreadsheet out of which something could be created, but someone who knows this stuff is going to have to oversee what I do to make sure it is accurate. There is surely a way to break it down into simple categories to give people an idea of what is being spent where. you throw as many insults as anyone. making fun of the lights is a perfect example. and I assume that is part of public works? You can't really make fun of the suggestion we cut energy usage in this day and age. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm changing the topic heading so we don't see that whole Lie thing posted any more. ---how to create a PDF file from every professional accounting package. Select the type of report you want in this case someone create one for the asbury park yahoo group then select create pdf They (the council) are simply overwhelmed by the complexity of running a municipality and so probably are some of the staff who are in over their heads. Just a guess. I just left another town's inpsection office as I have an inspection coming for some work that was done. I figure I'd go there in person to simply ask what time will they be there - just tell me am or pm and I'll be ok... The response, between 9 and 2:30.. Ok, can you please have them call me 15 minutes before... No, but you are on the list...6th you know tehy can't do that many inspections quick so figure later then sooner... Whew. So back to the budget - you have to look at what's coming in, taxes, state aid, what HAS to go out, what the wish list is and then go hunting for credit to cover the basics. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] banks cannot forgive credit card debt
An agency official said the government objects to allowing banks to defer losses for several years on the forgiven debt, as would occur in accounting by lenders under the special program. The agency does not consider any plan that defers the timely recognition of loss as prudent, and any such proposal cannot be viewed favorably by us, Timothy Long, senior deputy comptroller for bank supervision policy, said in a letter to the two groups dated Monday and made public Wednesday. But the fed is allowing banks to hide foreclosures. It's just easier on the system. Yahoo! Give me a break. You don't live in AP, and those ridiculous lights aren't blaring into your home at night when it's supposed to be dark. All of the homes that boarder the boardwalk area are lit up like daytime every single night, whether there is an event or not. The lights near the Casino are blaring away every night, flooding the living rooms and bedrooms of people in nearby Ocean Grove. It's absolute overkill. It would make much more sense to use the lighting on demand, when there's an event that warrents it, but to have them on every single night is a huge waste of electricity that we are paying for. Werner is 100 % right about how inappropriate the fixtures are. Also, crime isn't down in the city because of the lighting, in fact, the area where they are being used isn't really an area of the city that has been a hotbed of crime. Posts like this one are a good example of why so many people have a love/hate relationship with you. You are self-righteous, and feel the need to argue a point, no matter how wrong or ludicrous it is, right into the ground until you either feel that the people think you are right, or like in most cases, people stop paying attention... --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer hinge98@ wrote: You are a hypocrite. [AsburyPark] buy high on west side .......sell beachfront cheap
One does not have to be a real estate expert to see how suave the current leaders of Asbury Park are. Last council meeting in October, the public was told the beachfront triangle was sold to Asbury Partners for $490,000 with a minimum fee of a dollar a year for the new mansions to have patios on public green space. The ten multi-- million tri-plexs will have views of the ocean, lake and sewage plant. Reading this article, it seems like Uncle Phil screwed Asbury Park tax payers once again from the grave. Anybody else want to buy or sell land to people in charge of running the city. Thank god the state of New Jersey believes in Asbury Park leadership and keeps giving state aid. My other comment, would less expensive, out of county, lawyers have gotten us the a higher price for the beach front and retrieved the Springwood Ave lots free with eminent domain or time of essence letters for lack of payment in full. Does anybody know why the lots of Springwood Ave became the subject of a long law suit? Was it the past city leaders or the city lawyers who dropped the ball. In any case, at least the Westside will have fresh start, even if the tax payers don't know what going on. ASBURY PARK — The city and the company of the late power broker Philip Konvitz have reached a court agreement for Asbury Park to pay $700,000 to get back 50 vacant Springwood Avenue lots on which Konvitz failed to build on from 1990 until his death at age 95 in 20 05. Superior Court Judge Louis F. Locascio oversaw the settlement between Asbury Shores and the city, which was agreed to late last month and the City Council approved Wednesday night. The city will tap into the $2 million it has received so far for affordable housing and community projects from beachfront developer Asbury Partners, to buy back the land located on approximately three blocks of the Springwood Avenue corridor. The vote you just witnessed is a historic resolution for this city, said City Manager Terence J. Reidy. Since July 4, 1970, Springwood Avenue has either been blighted or underdeveloped, and this had a significant social impact on our city, Reidy said, referring to the date of civil disturbances. Councilman Ed Johnson said, This settlement is living proof that the past is over and we are moving on to the future. There could be a holdup on the sale going through if a third party, Somerset Development Corp. of Lakewood, decides to pursue an appeal of litigation over the Springwood sites that started in 2002. Somerset had contracted to buy the property to build market rate housing. But Asbury Park residents in 2005 objected to the plan and the city developed a new Springwood Avenue Redevelopment Plan under Councilman Johnson for the entire seven or eight block-length of Springwood from Memorial Drive to the Neptune boundary. Robert D. Broege, the attorney for Konvitz's estate and companies, said Somerset has 45 days to make an appeal. Ralph Zucker, Somerset's president, declined20through a spokeswoman to comment. I do think everyone's happy that it's done, Broege said. We hope it will do some good for Asbury Park. When negotiations to settle the continuing litigation began in September in Locascio's chambers, it appeared at first that Somerset might make a new deal to pay off Asbury Shores and start building on the land according to the new city plan. But the city responded with certain financial and performance assurances for such an agreement and Somerset walked away. Somerset had sought in 2007 to get Superior Court Judge Lawrence M. Lawson to force the city to transfer Asbury Shore's rights to Somerset. But Lawson ruled against Somerset. It is that decision, after a series of mediation and negotiation attempts, Somerset may still appeal. We want to get construction going, said Deputy Mayor James Bruno. Now that we've got the land, it's time to do the plan. Konvitz, a friend of the late Asbury Park Mayor Thomas Smith, started building small two-bedroom town houses on Springwood in 1990. He built 15 of 75 homes priced in the neighborhood of $75,000, but could not sell them. He shut down his efforts and said many years later he had lost more than $300,000. Konvitz was to have paid the city $750,000 for the land, but that never happened. Instead, he was given a credit for infrastructure work to offset the price of the land. He certified in April 1998 that the amount of money he had spent for infrastructure was $139,848. Asbury Shores did start payi ng taxes on the 50 lots after they were transferred to the company in 1999 in anticipation that Konvitz would build. In the 1990s, when Konvitz did not build, the barren landscape of the once-popular Springwood continued to be marked by poverty and drug dealing. It is only in the past few years that the avenue is taking a new direction under the city's new development plan and the interest of such groups as Interfaith Neighbors and its partner

[AsburyPark] Re: buy high on west side .......sell beachfront cheap
From the info in the article, Somerset's plan sounds best. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: One does not have to be a real estate expert to see how suave the current leaders of Asbury Park are. ASBURY PARK â The city and the company of the late power broker Philip Konvitz have reached a court agreement for Asbury Park to pay $700,000 to get back 50 vacant Springwood Avenue lots on which Konvitz failed to build on from 1990 until his death at age 95 in 20 05. It

I live in AP and I don't agree. All the lights have scared away the hookers that use to walk up and down the street. I think people can now see what they are getting, and are running away fast. I disagree. It's not the lights that scared the prostitutes away, it's our PD and other task forces that did it. But there are still prostitutes on Kingsley. [AsburyPark] Stand Up For Asbury!
Our Attorney Ron Gasiorowski has submitted a final bill for his legal services. We need to raise $5,000 as soon as possible to pay his legal fee. As many of you know, Mr. Gasiorowski successfully argued the appeal before Judge Lawson in Freehold. As a result, Judge Lawson affirmed the Asbury Park Zoning Board's decision to deny Market Street Mission their variances as well as the city's decision to shut the Mission down. Had the Market Street Mission remained open, approximately 1,000 homeless men would have been brought to Asbury Park every year. These men would eventually have been left to fend for themselves on Asbury's streets. This would have been disastrous to the city's safety and quality of life and would have placed substantial financial hardship on our town. Please be as generous as you possibly can by donating to our legal defense fund so that we can pay Mr. Gasiorowski for his fine work. He has been there of us since the beginning, now it's our turn to show our support for him. Yeah, I could see it. A red light district just like in Amsterdam. Why fly to Holland, or Hamburg, when you can come to AP for all your adult needs. But seriously, the hooker probably has diminished big time, and at the moment, it's looks like there may be a maximum of three of them patrolling Kingsley these days. One of them appears to keep being sent away, and keeps popping back up. I encountered her back in the spring. She's a big fan of my dog, and one day, she started telling me about how many times she'd been to rehab, and how many days she was sober, and about all the tragedy in her life, but somehow, she can't escape the drugs and prostitute life style. It's incredibly sad. There's another new one, very young, who always has a pimp looking guy trailing behind, usually on a bicycle. That's probably the one Oak made reference too. She's way too young, and way too attractive to be out there. All I can think that there must be a drug habit that she is feeding. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Gabrielle Obre [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: hey maybe that's the answer to ap budget woes. legal prostitution. what with the economy tanking there are surely some game chicks. just the other day while discussing the spitzer saga a very respectable looking guy said to me hey we all pay for it. not in my immediate realm, but who am i to bash the other options in the noosphere. there's all sorts of prostitution going on anyway. i never get to see ap hookers. how much do they charge? --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf oakdorf@ wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer hinge98@ wrote: I disagree. Military retirees, were hoping to use this housing. I had friends living there, while on duty and these places were top shelf and in mint condition! On the Post itself, there are brick homes built in the 30's and 40's, fully rehabilitated and are for officers only, but with the BRAC, the jobs are hopelessly going to Maryland. (Aberdeen Proving Ground). The CECOM building across from the HEX cost millions of dollars, built during the Reagan Administration in 1981 is scheduled for demolishing. Your tax dollars at work! It's a seaside town thats more residential then tourism oriented. When the tourists go away after the summer is done, that gives the rest of us, WHO LIVE HERE, 9 months to deal with the lighting. Now you are on the issue. The philosophy of the Redevelopment Plan is for year-round activity, not the seasonal tourism of the past. The airport analogy is relevant. Buy shades - probably the most ridiculous statement you've ever made here. When I lived in AP there was a streetlight on the pole right at my bedroom window, and the Freddie's Pizza sign right under that. I didn't complain to the City or Freddie. I bought a thick shade. Not a black-out shade. Just a normal thick shade did the trick. I put it up in the morning, pulled it down at night. I understood I lived in a small City. Yahoo! When you were growing up, it was a very nice neighborhood. We spent our 10th Wedding Anniversary at Freddies and Fredas, was right around the corner! Well, the building is still there. Freda's became Mishepo's and it's a restaurant, now or was. You could walk to Mt. Carmel! I attended a wedding this past Saturday down in Camden County, at All Saints Church. There's nothing like a Catholic wedding with the Mass. The bridesmaids wore chocolate taffeta dresses, (strapless), with Fall Bouquets. The reception was at Luciens Manor in Berlin, NJ. Beautiful fresh seafood, oysters and clams on the half shell, jumbo shrimp, hot and cold buffet, open bar throughout, sit down dinner, filet mignon and boneless fish. The dessert room was filled with miniature Italian pastries, fresh fruit, hot parfaits. You name it, they had it. A New York style wedding in NJ, (they're from Staten Island). The only comparable pizza I can find now is TJ's on Main Street, which I love. Pizza in Howell sucks. Most of the food in Howell sucks. We drive from Howell to TJ's when we want pizza. Later on Friday nights was the Friday Fish Fry at the Elks on 8th Avenue. A good inexpensive dinner served cafeteria style with all the comraderie of old time Asbury folks. After dinner we retired upstairs to the bocce court or out the bar. I'm getting misty eyed here. Sometimes I feel like I'd give anything to be back home like that. Yahoo! I thought that this discussion board was a nice place to keep up on current events and also to talk, discuss, and debate things that matter to all of us, in a city, that we all chose to live in...But instead these debates go on for days, with the same 6 people, that tend to attack each other on this forum..It feels more like a gossip column that most people dont understand..Thats whats boring.. And as far as your rape statement, and for calling out the Lanes, you should just ask me what the film was, and I would have let you know that if you saw something that looked like rape on the screen that offended you, it would have been taken off the screen. Bands tend to bring films that fall into the genre of B films, or off the wall artsy things..We do not censor what they chose, and if anyone, complains, of course we take it off. If you did in fact know me, or anyone that works at the Lanes, you would know how silly your paragraph was..Now I am boring myself.. Thanks for the perspective! xoxo Yahoo!
