Also, no amount of skill could convert Transporter's digital audio path to 32-bit, unless you redesigned nearly the entire product from scratch. I.e., it is utterly impossible to do it by soldering on some components, regardless of skill level. I could not do it by swapping components, and I have full source code to the entire system and know every proprietary detail of the design. Besides the fact, what benefit would it have? Likewise, claims of being able to reduce jitter to 3ps are complete cockamamie. That is about the amount of jitter introduced by the clock signal traveling across the PCB from the CPLD to the DAC, never mind propagating through the logic itself. Even a theoretically perfect oscillator having 0 jitter (which does not exist) could not reduce the level at the DAC below about 7 ps. And that is completely ignoring the fact that you could never install such an oscillator properly without, again, a board respin. Sorry but you are crazy to accept these claims at face value. If you understood the technology, you would find them just as ludicrous as the lacquered knob and other audiophile jokes. I don't accept anyone's claims at face value, including yours. Unless you truly understand the design and where critical voltages really matter (and are probably reregulated where they need to be) you're just shooting in the dark throwing Better Power supplies at it. Reducing PSU noise is not just shooting in dark. AP understands the critical voltage requirements in the TacT gear. His PSUs have also improved the performance of Meridan equipment. Upgrading the $40. off the shelf SMPS in a $20K digital processor isn't the same the engine in a $70K Porche. I think this is going to turn out pretty sweet. I even bought a lighted remote to go with the new unit. Quite frankly, my current stock SB3 with custom DIY power supply and DAC60 sounds pretty sweet as it is. But the adventurous in me is eager to work on a new project. It will surely keep me busy in the months to follow. Stay tuned for updates on this Super SB Regards, crooner I'm sure the thick brushed aluminum front panel and the larger Condor MD5-12-OVP-A medical grade linear supply, will make a big improvement in SQ. You are still sending the clock across a transmission line, significantly degrading it from what you would have with the clock on-board close to the DAC. If i2s were a good way of doing an interconnect, lots of devices would use it. There is no reason to speculate about this stuff. With the right equipment it is very easy to see exactly what is going on. 325xi;184393 Wrote: This eventually became rather pointless... Try to analyse why can two digital sources sound differently, assuming both are in working condition, so data stream is bit-accurate? One simple word - jitter. Applied to various parts of spectrum in different amounts your chains may sound somewhat different. If the effect is well pronounced, your DAC doesn't have a good jitter rejection mechanism, although the latter can never eliminate jitter in full. If so, I would be looking for another DAC - or stick with very low jitter sources. Now, SB is confirmed to have reasonably low jitter, and transporter - even lower. If your Pioneer sounds vastly different, it can mean that it has either significantly higher jitter, and then it can be considered flawed; or it's low, but applied to the part of spectrum where it more audible (the same could be valid for SB as well). Important thing to consider - sometimes, quite rarely, jitter can cause delusion of better sound. I don't know if this is the case. My Pioneer and every transport/CDP I've ever owned or tried sounds better than the SB. Higher jitter can never give the delusion of better sound, unless you like glaring highs, reduced soundstage/separation of images and reduced dynamics. Like I said, something must be wrong with your chain, if you can't hear this. seanadams;184485 Wrote: Oops, I mis-read your question...I thought you were asking what _I_ could hear. But basically the answer is the same. If you are comparing two devices whose output jitter differ by a few tens of picoseconds, I would not expect you to be able to detect a difference simply by listening to the output of a DAC fed by s/pdif. The interface could easily be adding _another_ 150ps RMS by the time the signal gets to the DAC chip. Although the clock jitter is ~30ps RMS lower in Transporter than in Squeezebox, I would consider both products to be practically ideal *as plain s/pdif sources*, because there's only so good you can get anyway with s/pdif. The jitter that s/pdif adds will dwarf whatever a high quality source is generating. That is why Transporter incorporates an extremely high quality _internal_ DAC, and _also_ supports external word clock sync in either direction. An absurdly low-jitter clock is of little benefit if you're just going to send it over s/pdif. However, I would love to be proven wrong. Thanks for your corrected response. FYI- the clocks in my DAC are +/- 10ps. I never said the SQ differences I'm hearing are jitter related, that was 325xi's call. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: A Cut-Rate Audio philes Experience With a Linear Power Supply
Thanks for the feedback. With no load, I measured the wall wart's voltage at 5.18vdc. I've build/modified a number of power supplies, both linear and SMPS, and my experience has been that they do improve after being powered up for 48 hours or more. For example, the makers of Black Gate capacitors feel performance improves after 30 hours of use, see: http://www.blackgate.jp/english.htm My linear psu doesn't run hot. If I put my ear right next to my linear psu, I can hear some noise, but I can't hear anything in my very quiet dedicated listening room's listening position. You can also hear noise, if you place your ear right next to the stock wall wart. I'll bet you can also hear noise with your ear right next to your Arcam amp, or any other piece of electronics that has a power supply linear or SMPS. I agree that some people may not hear any improve when they try an off the shelf linear psu. Be well. mick_w;171641 Wrote: Yes I did test the voltage (spot on 5V), yes I did wire the unit correctly, and yes I did have it running for over 4 weeks constantly before I tried the A/B test. Like I've said above, I couldn't tell the difference even though I really wanted to believe the linear PS was better. My initial impressions that the new PS was better was a pure placebo effect. Is everyone else on this thread using linear power supplies? and are you claiming yours doesn't get hot or hum ? BTW, parallel really means parallel! You need to tie the ground interconnects to physically follow the digital interconnect. What possible effect could this have on the ground path? FYI- the shield/ground connection on the TacT's analog inputs are isolated from the chassis ground by a resistor. I think you have other noise issues in your system. (However, I run the SB3 on battery -so it is not stock.) 3. My more expensive Krell FPB-200 has been retired in favour of my much older Krell KSA-50S. I discovered that the KSA-50S sounds a lot better than the FPB-200 with my current speakers! 4. My temporary arrangement for SB3 battery supply has been replaced with a nicer DIY control box which charges one unused battery while the other is being used. The batteries hang off an umbilical, and the control box has a local 1 Farad supercap before the regulator (which has its own caps). The battery are regulated down from 6.4 volts to 5.18 volts. Swithover is still manual (for now), but the simple throw of a switch swaps charging and listening batteries. (And the charging circuit is totally disconnected from the listening circuit, including neutral.) At the moment the sound is scarily good. Unnaturally so... ;-) Compliments to Slimdevices for making the humble SB3 so competent (if the SMPS is junked). Ideas for the future: Get Transporter and use directly into the power amp. Route A/V and other secondary stuff via the TacT (for A/D) and then via Toslink to the Transporter. My TacT 2150s are used as power DACs and don't need any preamps or volume controls. Yes, I believe the Transporter would be a better value, if it was exclusively dependent on a remote control with a display, but if you and George like playing with the knob and buttons, it's your money. The $25. remote for my TacT gear, DL and transports works just fine, would a more expensive one make my system sound better? Are you saying the Transporter isn't revolutionary? -- jhm731 jhm731's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30243 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I haven't seen any volume knobs on DVD players, most power amp don't have any volume controls and my TacT S2150 amp's volume is controlled by a remote. I've also got a Genesis Digital Lens that has no buttons or knobs, it's totally controlled by a remote. I've got all my gear controlled by a single universal Sony remote($25. at Wallmart). IMO, the revolutionary Transporter should have been packaged in a plain 1U case with no knobs or buttons controlled by a programmable remote with a display like the Sonus and offered in a basic digital only version, with expansion slots to add daughter cards for a DAC, ADC, etc... -- jhm731 jhm731's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30243 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter review
Gary G. posts that he's having his Transporter modified and the SD's CEO and one of his dealers, highdudgeon (George Day), attack the guy. Why shouldn't he mod it? In the review that started this thread, J.Bray- said of Transporter: But it isn't,alas, as good as a traditional CD or SACD player of similar price. In back-to-back listening sessions against a Unison Research Unico CD player, which incidentally sells for £100 less than the Transporter, it lacked the punch, presence and sheer excitement on offer from the humble disc spinner. Where the Transporter was clinically accurate, and revealed as much detail, it simply didn't project the music into the room as much as the CD player did. I'm sure Gary G's modified Wadia sounds a lot better than a Unison Research Unico CD player Then acm said it's doesn't sound as good as his stock Denon 5910. KimR said the Transporter doesn't sound any better than his SB3 off the digital outputs. If all the parts in the Transporter are so good, how could this happen? IMO, it's Gary's unit and he can do whatever he wants to it, and he doesn't owe anyone an explanation. PS- IMO, the SD's Transporter marketing statement- And performance that is not matched by ANY product that we've been able to find. Here's a quote from modifier/designer Alex Peychev(APLHIFI)'s forum about your smoking measurements: Those guys will never learn. At -60db you will need to go and put your ear on the speaker driver in order to hear something, so who cares about -130db noise floor of your digital source which, for example, is usually brought 60db up with a regular tube amplifier. Here is the puzzling thing; the NWO-2.5 has barely -105db noise floor and barely -86db (0.0056%) THD+N. Note the tube stage is non-NFB. According to Mr. CEO, his Transporter should sound around 2 times better than the NWO-2.5 WOW! To prove your statement isn't pure hype, why don't you contact Mr.Peychev and one of the audio clubs on audiocircle.com and arrange for a shootout with his NWO-2.5? Invite the other modifiers to bring their modified Transporters too. seanadams;158255 Wrote: To be clear, I am talking about objectively measurable performance (SNR, jitter, dynamic range etc), which admittedly is not the be-all-end-all of perceived sound quality. However, it's a lot better than nothing! I will happily eat my hat and retract that statement as soon as I (or anyone else) can find anything that performs better than Transporter. Also, all of the test data that I post here on the forums includes all the necessary setup information for anyone with similar measuring equipment to independently verify. For example, here is the Transporter smoking the Benchmark DAC1 and the dScope's built-in signal generator in a noise floor and jitter measurement: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28126 I will _never_ expect you to take my word for it. Go ahead and try these tests for yourself - you don't need a $13K analyzer, you can also get useful comparative measurements with a good sound card and the RightMark software. Try blind ABX listening too. If you're going to shoot down my claim as pure hype then I hope you can back up your position. I've done my best to articulate mine. -- jhm731 jhm731's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29450 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
