[Ontbirds] Rondeau update
Hello Ontbirders. New for Rondeau Provincial Park's 2010 year list was a Yellow-throated Vireo on Tulip Tree Trail this afternoon. Also new were Canada Warbler and Bay-breasted Warbler on Spicebush Trail, and American Redstart as well as Ovenbird on South Point Trail. Our warbler count for today was 16 species. The Cattle Egret near the park mentioned in my previous posting was present in the same field at the intersection of Erieau Road and Bisnett Road up to at least 3:15 pm today. The bird was in full breeding plumage. It could not be found at that location at 4:30 pm. Observers searching for the egret managed to turn up a flock of 60 Pectoral Sandpipers. At the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons, a Sora was sighted. Good birding! [Ontbirds] Rondeau Update
Good evening Ontbirders. Birders at Rondeau enjoyed a bright sunny afternoon, and perhaps their first sunburn of the season. In the birding department, fifteen species of warblers, plus one hybrid were reported today. The best trails were South Point and Spicebush. Aside from warblers, noteworthy songbirds included Summer Tanager along Lakeshore Road and White-eyed Vireo on South Point Trail. Recently-arrived Wood Thrushes shared the birding trails with late-departing Hermit Thrushes. The Cattle Egret reported near Rondeau at Erieau Road and Bisnett Road has now been seen in the same area for a third day, up to early this evening. Look for a field just east of the intersection with a white fence. At times, the bird feeds in a low ditch alongside the field, so some scanning and patience (and luck!) may be required. Good evening Ontbirders. Late afternoon sightings at Rondeau featured two good warblers on Harrison Trail near the Pony Barns. A Prairie Warbler and an extremely early Blackpoll Wabler were well-seen and photographed. This evening's bird hike will visit the Marsh Trail. We will check on the park's nesting Bald Eagles as well as marsh birds - report tomorrow. Good birding. [Ontbirds] Rondeau Update
Good evening Ontbirders. Rondeau birders didn't have to travel far in search of good birds this afternoon. Just outside of the Visitor Centre, there were 2 Hooded Warblers, a White-eyed Vireo, a (presumed) pair of Tufted Titmice and an Orchard Oriole. Our final warbler count for the day was 24 species. Near the South Point Trail parking, a Yellow-breasted Chat may have established itself on territory. It has been singing persisently in the same patch of apparently suitable habitat for a third day. Also seen there today was a male Eastern Bluebird. On the Marsh Trail, two Forster's Terns were sighted. Good birding. Good evening Ontbirders. We have had no further reports yet of the Blue Grosbeak seen yesterday evening at Rondeau at the Pony Barn. I will send an update as soon as we have any news. Rondeau's warbler total for today was a bit lower at 17, with the low temperatures, high winds and periodic rain being more conducive to hypothermia than a big daylist. Our specials of the day were Golden-winged at the Pony Barn, Blue-winged on Tulip Tree Trail, and Prothonotary on Rondeau Road near Spicebush Trail. Other songbirds du jour included White-eyed Vireo and Eastern Bluebird on South Point Trail and Orchard Orioles on many park trails. Near the park, the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons were productive today. Shorebird sightings included 3 Wilson's Phalaropes; Dunlin; Semipalmated Plover; Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs; as well as Least, Pectoral and Solitary Sandpipers. There were was also a good variety of ducks: Northern Shoveler; American Wigeon; Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal; Ring-necked Duck and Lesser Scaup. Other species of interest included 2 American Coot; 4 Pied-billed Grebes; all six species of Swallow and 4 Bobolink. The Catte Egret continues to be seen at the intersection of Erieau and Bisnett Roads. Directions for Sewage Lagoons (courtesy of Irene Woods): Blenheim is on #3 H [Talbot Rd]. in Chatham-Kent. Take # 3 H West out of Blenheim, about 1 km. You will see a car wash at the corner of Lagoon Rd., turn right [ North]. Go about 1/2 km. and you will see a small locked gate [ see below]. Good evening Ontbirders. Our daily Rondeau warbler count reached 23 species, with the addition this afternoon of Prothonotary on Bennett Road (near the second bench from the parking lot) and Blue-winged Warbler on Harrison Trail. Good lists were recorded for the Maintenance Loop, as well as Tulip Tree, Spicebush, South Point and Harrison Trails. Of these, Spicebush was particularly lively, with small mixed flocks of warblers moving through. Recent arrivals in the park include Veery, Philadelphia Vireo and Chimney Swift. The bird garden and feeders at the Visitor Centre viewing window were very active. A total of 20 species were seen today. Recent highlights include Purple Finch, Lincoln's Sparrow, a pair of Tufted Titmouse, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, and both Baltimore and Orchard Orioles. Good birding! [Ontbirds] Rondeau Update
Good evening Ontbirders. An impressive count of 27 species of warblers was seen at Rondeau today. Top of the list were a Yellow-breasted Chat on South Point Trail (past post #7), a Prothonotary on Bennett Road, and a Cerulean on Spicebush Trail. The Chat has been singing in the same vicinity for two days now. Other good warblers included Golden-winged on Spicebush Trail and at Pony Barn, Northern Parula on Spicebush Trail, Blue-winged on Harrison Trail, and Orange-crowned at Pony Barn and Tulip Tree Trail. The best trails for warbler action were Spicebush and South Point, closely followed by Tulip Tree. Passerines of the non-warbler persuasion were also of interest. Both White-eyed and Yellow-throated Vireo were observed on South Point Trail. Orchard Orioles were seen on South Point and Tulip Tree Trails. Significant numbers of thrushes finally put in an appearance, with flocks that had apparently just arrived. Good numbers of Veery were seen in many parts of the park, plus late Hermit Thrushes on Tulip Tree Trail and South Point Trail. Shorebirds can be a challenging group to find in the park itself. Today's reports included 2 Willet north of the Beach 2 access. Other shorebirds were seen at the muddy shoreline behind the Park office, including 1 Semipalmated Plover, 3 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, and 2 Solitary Sandpiper. A Stilt Sandpiper was noted there yesterday. Raptors were also part of the show today. A Peregrine Falcon was seen on South Point Trail, and the Cooper's Hawk nest on Tulip Tree Trail near the Visitor Centre was still active. A flock of 5 Sandhill Cranes was observed over the Marsh Trail this afternoon. Near the park, a good variety of waterfowl and shorebirds are at the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons, including Wilson's Phalaropes. We have had no further reports yet of the Blue Grosbeak (first-year male) seen at Rondeau on the evening of Sat. May 8. I will post updates as soon as we have any further sightings. Good birding! [Ontbirds] Rondeau Update
Good evening Ontbirders. The Blue Grosbeak at Rondeau has been seen regularly visiting a feeder on campsite #67 up to at least 6:30 pm today. It has also been seen at site #69. Observations range from 6:40 am to 7:30 pm. After consultation with Peter Burke and other birders, and reviewing the available photographs, it appears that this bird is an adult female (Not a first-year male, as I previously posted). The bird shows considerable blue on the rump and tail, but almost none elsewhere. Visitors are reminded that only campers are permitted to drive into the campground. DIRECTIONS: After you enter the park, drive about 1 km, the turn left on Rondeau Avenue. Drive to the first road on your right, Harrison Trail, turn and park on the roadside in this vicinity. Just before / west of Harrison, there is a small path that leads north into the campground. Walk past sites #63, 64, 65 and 66 to site #67. Please be careful to stay off occupied campsites and not to disturb the campers in the area. Photographers are asked NOT to use flash, as this is disturbing both the bird and the campers. Good birds this afternoon included a Clay-colored Sparrow on South Point Trail past post #7 and a Hooded Warbler across from the Gardiner Ave. deer exclosure. There was an obvious influx of migrants into the park today. Warbler reports included sightings of "a number of Blackburnians on South Point Trail", for example, instead of just the occasional individual. There were so many Yellow Warblers that 23 were seen on a muddy patch of shoreline near the Park Office. White-crowned Sparrows have also arrived in larger numbers, with flocks of a dozen or two reported from South Point north to the park gate. BIRDING ETIQUETTE Birders and photographers are cautioned regarding the importance of following proper birding etiquette within Rondeau Provincial Park. Please refrain from any use of electronic devices or tapes to call birds, which harass our wildlife, while in the park. Thank you for your understanding, cooperation and compliance. My afternoon hike today visited the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons near the park. Many of the shorebirds seen earlier had apparently departed. We saw ~80 Dunlin and 2 Lesser Yellowlegs. Waterfowl included Ruddy Duck, Northern Shoveler, Ring-necked Duck and an American Wigeon. Other waterbirds observed were Pied-billed Grebes and a Black Tern. In the songbird category, 5 Bobolinks were found. Directions for Sewage Lagoons (courtesy of Irene Woods): Blenheim is on #3 H [Talbot Rd]. in Chatham-Kent. Good evening Ontbirders. Our final warbler tally for Rondeau today was an impressive 32 species. The Worm-eating was seen and photographed at a number of sites on Spicebush Trail up to at least 3:00 pm. A Peregrine Falcon was observed at the southern tip of South Point. Yesterday evening, 3 Whip-poor-wills were heard around the park from the campground to Spicebush Trail, plus another one at South Point Trail. Please note that the Yellow-Headed Blackbird reported at the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons is a female. The Red-necked Phalarope at the lagoons is a male. Sightings at Erieau included an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, which may possibly have been a hybrid, and a late Glaucous Gull. Reports from boating birders launching from Erieau and scanning the park shoreline included 500 Black-bellied Plovers, 20 Ruddy Turnstones, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, 1 Great Black-backed Gull and 'lots' of Bonaparte's Gulls and Forster's Terns. Good evening Ontbirders. The Worm-eating Warbler at Rondeau was seen again on Spicebush Trail early this afternoon, near the corner farthest from the entrance. A good variety of warblers was reported from Tulip Tree, South Point and Spicebush Trails. On South Point Trail, a number of Red-headed Woodpeckers were seen, including one apparently excavating a nest hole. One bird also visited the feeders at the Visitor Centre. Near the park, reports from Blenheim Sewage Lagoons included 1 Red-necked Phalarope, 200+ Dunlins, 6 Lesser Yellowlegs and 1 Least Sandpiper. Observers saw no sign of the female Yellow-headed Blackbird seen there yesterday. At Erieau, the Glaucous Gull was seen again. Many thanks to all of the birders who have taken the time to report their sightings in our Bird Sightings Book at the Visitor Centre, or to email observations and photos to me. Good evening Ontbirders. This afternoon at Rondeau, several shorebirds were reported from the mud on the shoreline near the Park Office, including a large flock of Dunlin, and singles for Semipalmated Plover, Semipalmated Sandpiper and Least Sandpiper. Four Ruddy Turnstones were seen from the beach on South Point Trail. Foggy conditions for a significant portion of the day were not especially helpful in the search for migrating Whimbrel - the tally for today was a disappointing zero. Yesterday, observers reported seeing 3 Green Herons on the Marsh Trail. A surprise on my bird hike this afternoon was a Brown Creeper on South Point Trail. This is presumably a breeding / summer resident bird - this species has nested in the park. Near the park, the ongoing saga of the phalaropes continues at the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons. Yesterday's installment featured 3 Red-necked Phalaropes, (2 females and one male), and one Wilson's Phalarope (quite pale). Stay tuned. Good birding! Good evening Ontbirders, Our final total of warblers at Rondeau for today was 22 species. A welcome late afternoon addition was the Yellow-breasted Chat on South Point Trail. The Prothonotary seen on Tulip Tree Trail this afternoon turned out to be colour-banded, which will help with the ongoing assessment of the status of this species. On my 1:00 pm bird hike, I found a nightjar perched on a branch on Harrison Trail midway between Maintenance Loop and Pony Barn. Opinions as to identification varied (but no violence ensued!) and photos will tell the tale soon enough concerning Common Nighthawk versus Whip-poor-will. Other noteworthy birds found later in the day included a late Hermit Thrush on Harrison Trail and a Yellow-throated Vireo, both south of the Group Campground. Outside the park, a flock of 200++ Black-bellied Plovers was seen in a flooded field about 5 km east of Port Alma. The Eared Grebe was observed again today at Blenheim Sewage Lagoons. All addresses are on Lakeshore Road. The first site , #17372, is the sixth cottage north of the Visitor Centre, just a five minute walk from the VC. All of the other cottages are located some distance to the south of the Visitor Centre, The birding hotspot this afternoon was the sloughs along Bennett Road. From a single convenient bench, you could view 3 Northern Parulas and 4 Black-and-white Warblers,as well as American Redstart, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler and a pair of Black-capped Chickadees excavating a nest cavity in a short stump projecting just two feet out of the water. Good evening Ontbirders. At Rondeau, the mini-invasion of Yellow-throated Warblers has apparently expanded from one to two birds. At the same time that one birder was watching an individual YTWA eating suet at the Visitor Centre (12:10 to 1:00 pm), his friend was observing a YTWA visiting cottages some distance away on Lakeshore Road. The cottage bird was moving around the eaves trough of one cottage after another (at least 4 in succession), apparently searching for insects and spiders. This individual was seen visiting cottages from approximately #17238 to approximately #17260. It was presumably this same bird that had been seen previously moving about the walls of cottages, searching for food. The bird at the Visitor Centre suet feeder was seen at 7:15 am, 12:43 pm, and 3:45 pm. It will be interesting to assess/guess just how many birds showed up in Southern Ontario during this spring migration ... would make fascinating reading in Ontario Birds. Keep your device tuned to this station for more breaking news! In addition to the White-eyed Vireo on South Point Trail, a second bird was noted at cottage #17238 Lakeshore Road. We also received a report of a Louisiana Waterthrush at Spicebush Trail this afternoon. In the late migrant category, we had at least 2 Hermit Thrushes on Tulip Tree Trail and a dark phase Rough-legged Hawk flying over the park gate. An adult Bald Eagle was also seen at the latter location. Outside of the park, visitors to Blenheim Sewage Lagoons today reported Pied-billed Grebe, Northern Shoveler, Ring-necked Duck, Ruddy Duck, American Wigeon, Green-winged and Blue-winged Teal, Least Sandpiper, Dunlin, Black Tern, Bobolink and Savannah Sparrow. Visitors to the lagoons are reminded that a permit is required. It is available online by contacting the Chatham-Kent offices or from the Rondeau Visitor Centre. A Louisiana Waterthrush was reported on Spicebush Trail on the boardwalk on the side of the trail farther from the road. A total of 24 species of warblers were seen in the park today. During today's bird hikes, we saw some interesting bird behaviour. On Bennett Road, a male Baltimore Oriole (likely with a nest nearby) was observed diving forcefully into a Blue Jay, producing an audible thump. On Harrison Trail, we watched a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak performing elaborate courtship displays for a female, including the "Adult Accompaniment Required" wing-droop-fluff! a la Stokes. [Ontbirds] Rondeau Update
Good evening Ontbirders. Rondeau birders will pleased to learn that the egret enigma has been resolved. The 2 Cattle egrets observed just outside the park on May 10 have now been relocated - they were last seen on the late afternoon of May 11 flying south along the Rondeau east beach. Our final wabler tally for the park today was 24 species. In addition to the Yellow-throated, Cerulean and Hooded mentioned previously, a number of other noteworthy species were reported, including Northern Parula, Pine, Blackpoll, Northern Waterthrush, Wilson's and Canada. The best place to see warblers, as well as other migrants, continued to be South Point Trail. We have had no further sightings of the Kirtland's Warbler reported at 10 am today on the Maintenance Loop, beside the fence. A Winter Wren on Lakeshore Road was quite late. Some lucky birders and photgraphers saw a roosting Common Nighthawk to the east of the Maintenance Loop. Shorebirds are generally difficult to find in the park, so a sighting of 4 Ruddy Turnstones and 20 Black-bellied Plovers on the beach on South Point Trail was significant.. Thank you to everyone who supplied Rondeau birding information for this report. Good birding - Directions: Take exit 101 from Highway 401 and drive South 16 km on Chatham Kent Road 15. Turn right and follow the signs to the park. The Bird Sightings Book, Bird Sightings Board, Bird Checklists and other relevant information are to be found at the Visitor Centre. To reach the Visitor Centre from the park Gate, travel 6 km South on Rondeau Road to Gardiner Ave., then follow it around the bend to the parking lot. With the weather turning from warm to cold, bird migration which just began, has ground to a halt. Warblers are being found in protected areas from the high winds. On May 11th, just before the weather turned a good migration occurred in the morning with the highlights being, 1 prothonotary warbler, 2 tufted titmouse, 1 yellow-billed cuckoo, 1 dickcissel, 1 Kirtland's warbler, 2 Louisiana waterthrush, 1 spotted towhee, 1 orange-crowned warbler and 1 hooded warbler. On May 12th, the prothonotary warbler was seen again on the Tulip Tree Trail, which has been the most consistent location to find this bird. Another report of a yellow-throated warbler had birders scrambling around the Maintenance Compound most of the day. Along the Harrison Trail south of the Pony Barns, a Kentucky warbler was seen with a yellow-breasted chat closer to the barns. In the evening a female hooded warbler bounced around the ground flashing her bi- coloured tail feathers as she searched for food on the Tulip Tree Trail. The three-toed woodpecker was reported being seen again on Thursday evening on the Tulip Tree Trail. This bird is moving around alot throughout the park especially near the burned areas. Today, May 13th, the birds are fewer and harder to find while they seek protection from the high winds. The prothonotary warbler as always is the highlight for anyone travelling to Rondeau. If one waits long enough on the bridges on the Tulip Tree Trail, it will appear usually at Bridge 7 or Bridge 9. Festival of Flight: The festival is over but good birding will likely continue in the weeks ahead. The last day was dampened by heavy rains in the morning but cleared in time for the afternoon hike. Good birds such as Gold-winged, Blue-winged and Connecticut warblers were seen on South Point Trail. Several Acadian Flycatchers were recorded along the western part of South Point Trail. The Prothonotary was a crowd pleaser for many days of the festival. It will continue to be an easy bird to see as it is nesting in two locations on Tulip Trail. The Yellow-breasted Chat was more consistently seen in early May but continues to pop up in different locations throughout the park. The White-winged Dove remains an easy find on Lakeshore Rd as it sits on chimneys and cars. Thanks to the Friends of Rondeau and the park staff for making my stay enjoyable. Hi The yellow throated warbler is still being seen It is less regular than before but it has been seen each day at the feeders on the road side of the cottage. It is definitely eating sunflower seeds and seems to hold his own against the other birds. On South Point there was little activity between the downpours. Common yellow throat blue grey gnat catchers ruby and golden crowned kinglets brown thrasher towhee were the most common. Spicebush was even slower Brown creepers blue grey gnat catchers black and white and a probably blue winged warbler right at the entrance to the trail. [Ontbirds] Rondeau - Western Tanager
Good afternoon Ontbirders, A WESTERN TANAGER male was seen at Rondeau Provincial Park this afternoon. The bird was found and photographed by Kyle Holloway. The photographs show the diagnostic field marks. It was first seen for a fairly brief period (? less than half and hour ?) near the South Point Trail Parking lot. The bird was last seen at ~2:40 pm. It was last seen where the paved trail leaves the parking lot. Note that recent rains have flooded this small portion of the trail, and you will need rubber boots if you want to access this immediate area. You can easily bypass the 'water hazard' by detouring around via the north exit to the parking lot, and circling back to the paved trail. The bird was first found just southeast of the parking lot on an unmarked trail that leads roughly towards the beach, between the parking lot and the first house on Lakeshore Road. The bird has only been seen within small, limited radius. Note that there are 2 parking lots for South Point Trail. The bird was seen near the southern parking lot, NOT the one to the west of the Visitor Centre on Gardiner Avenue. Good luck!
