I posted this to other groups without adequate response... So, I have a customer who wants to put in a CUE at every remote site for VM, but use CUCM for call processing (so the CUE would work in SRST, but be connected to CUCM via JTAPI). We have demo gear from Cisco and we have the CUE7 working with CCM7, in SRST, we have most functionality, but MWI does not work... (in ccm mode, everything works...) I have found lots of documentation saying it is supported, but none saying how to do it... From the SRND: Although MWI changes are not supported in SRST mode with previous releases of Cisco Unity Express, voice messages can be sent and retrieved as during normal operation, but the MWI lamp state on the phone remains unchanged until the phone registers again with Unified CM. At that time, all MWI lamp states are automatically resynchronized with the current state of the users' Cisco Unity Express voicemail boxes. Cisco Unity Express 3.0 and later releases support MWI for SRST mode http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/srnd/6x/unityx.html Anyone see this work? [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Impression of V3 - My two cents worth.
This was my third time around, twice with v2 now once with V3. Yes it was very challenging but completely doable. The big thing was the items that none of the prep material out there covers in-depth, including Cisco own SRND (it makes a good start). Sort of got blindsided by those items. Some hints: Do not waste too much time or money with the prep material from anyone at this point, they still have not got it together. Read the SRND word for word several times!!! If a rack provider cannot get the CUE loaded with CUCM version of the software do not buy from them Find the advanced dial plan presentation from Networkers 2009 and study like it was your bible Keep in mind 60% of the material from IPexpert, CCbootcamb, and Internetwork Expert will help, but is not complete enough especially in the advanced dial plan area and CUE with CUCM. I came close but could have used more study material on the dial plan, did not see the Networkers presentation until the day after I came back from my test. Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Impression of V3 - My two cents worth.
Look, I gotta say it. If you post NDA stuff, Cisco just makes the test harder and harder. The end of the v2 run was DISGUSTING. It wasn't a test--it was a puzzle. I might have done better with the nail puzzle or a Sudoku puzzle. I might have done better finding the holy grail. CUE with CUCM load probably breaks NDA. It was covered in IPexpert's v2 stuff somewhere anyways so it's not a surprise, we know to study it as well as anything else that was in the old stuff. So you are not doing *US* any favors. We bought the old stuff, we have the new stuff and are studying BOTH. The prep material is not a waste of money--IPExpert is not selling a brain dump. I started studying for v3 before IPExpert came out with any of the V3 stuff and I gotta say, it's a LOT easier to understand and gives a different perspective for solving some of the cisco documentation woes. They have also included stuff that I haven't come across in the documentation or everyday life (such as question 9.1 for sip hunt). The other stuff, *I* don't see a problem with. Yea, study the FS guide, the system guide, the CCME Admin guide, the IPCC guide, etc, etc, etc. also. -Original Message- From: ccie_voice-boun...@onlinestudylist.com [mailto:ccie_voice-boun...@onlinestudylist.com] On Behalf Of Sean B Davis Sent: Monday, August 10, 2009 1:10 PM To: ccie_voice@onlinestudylist.com Subject: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Impression of V3 - My two cents worth. That's why I'm not rushing to take the exam. We had one fellow last week mention that he had passed the exam, but it was his 6th attempt, I imagine his study habits changed quite a bit over time so I'm sure he's an exception and not the rule. No vendor is going to be up to speed on what's needed, the exam came out a barely a month ago. Strategically, it's better to wait a few months at least before taking the boot camp and/or take the exam, even if it means that the exam will become harder as time goes on (personally, I think it's a bad idea for Cisco to ramp up the difficulty before a year has lapsed. Everyone is trying to catch up as it is.) If Cisco's decided to start testing for knowledge and relevant skill, taking some time to master the topics on a fundamental level is a benefit to the market and themselves. Which part? I am completely disappointed with all the training providers lack of prep for the new version. I do not see any thing in my comment that is NDA. I have given no details and will not, I am just saying there are technologies in the blue print that are not covered fully in the Workbooks out there. I am also not seeing how every impression posted does not even mention this. It's time someone spoke a little truth on this list. It's also time the the training providers started getting out from behind the 8 ball. Yeah, sorry, Sean's right. And, btw, everyone knows about the NDA and he didn't voilate it with material details. Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Impression of V3 - My two cents worth.
My own feeling about this is; 1) Pass or fail, just like Jim said, we should be grateful for the age we live in. I'm pretty sure that if I were born 100 years ago I would not be doing anything constructive with my life. Today - tons of technology, all of it is accessible. I can walk into a bookstore and buy a book on any tech I'm interested in. That's not an accident, companies have smartened up. 2) Man, how's IPX supposed to have the material for this test together so quickly? What is this, a race?! 4 weeks have passed since the new exam started and candidates were running like hell to get their number. The process of professional progress has become so absurd. Don't forget, guys, you're supposed to know this stuff fundamentally. If you play your cards right, there'll come a day when you'll face deployments a HELL of a lot more difficult than 8 phones in a lab. Great training programs, great vendors, a profession that's in demand. Presumably, we're all in the VoIP profession already. I, for one, am not doing this to move on from what I'm doing, I'm doing it to improve - and I will. And I'm sure it'll be painful. Guys, one more thing; I can't tell you how many CCIEs I know that are out of work. The CCIE is not a guarentee of anything. Good engineers are lucky to be hired by good organizations that value their body of work and track record. This is one more step in a long effort of development. If you focus on the failures that happen because of bullet points on a test, you're missing the point. Keep training. Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Impression of V3 - My two cents worth.
I never said the CUE/UCM was on the test it's just a spot that seams to be lacking on the training material. It is something I would like to be prepared for! I am not looking for a brain dump I am looking for training on the stuff that those of use working for small partners will never in the field, that is what my company is paying for when they buy this stuff. So I guess you have no problem going out and buy a car that is 80% built? Same thing, as a consumer I expect my money or the companies money to go for something better. Yes IPExpert does cover allot little stuff like the sip hunt, but missed the big one. All they and the other had to do was look at Cisco's direction on certain technologies to figure out what needs to be covered, that what we pay them for not brain dumps! My company paid of 5k for another guy to go thought the boot camp and get the all the work books. They did not get there moneys worth, there should have be a big huge disclaimer that said, do not even think about buying this unless you plan on taking you lab next year! I understand updates are always necessary but none should not be so major so soon. I am not picking on any one provider, I giving a warning to others about the industry as a whole. This is been my experience and frustration. For all of those who keep pressuring them to release the V3 stuff before it was done, this is your fault as much as theirs for giving in. Here is a novel business plan, Technology workbook - 25 chapters released only when all chapters are done and tested with full starting configs for each chapter . Lab workbook - 15 labs released only when all labs and explanations are done and test with full starting configs, including the publicly announced UCCM/UCCX/UCUC integrations done, with the user names done. This was announced at networkers. Racks with on the necessary equipment all software and necessary IOS's loaded on the test PC with FTP/TFTP/SFTP loaded. Full acces to all routers equipment including the PSTN/WAN. Yes in lab you do not have access to these, but when training it's really nice to to be able to verify and try. Full VPN access not easy VPN, rack with public IP's with the ability to do a point to point tunnel. Would be nice to use what ever phone you have with out NAT in the way! Anyone what to start a new company? Sean Michael Ciarfello wrote: Look, I gotta say it.
Michael, Are you sure CUE/CUCM was covered in the v2 material? Which module? Also, how would Proctorlabs accomodate this? You need to apply a specific license file during installation of CUE to get it to work on either CUCM or CME (can't do both, from what I've seen.) CUE with CUCM load probably breaks NDA. Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Impression of V3 - My two cents worth.
One week lab experience, lab 4. Not sure if proctorlabs could test it at the time. Only logged in twice for CatOS QoS and vg248 stuff. Yes, you have to change the license, (reinstall, whatever it was.) No one said the CCIE exam can't integrate CCME with IPCCX, so maybe try that also. That's a reinstall also. Same for the IVR license for CUE Outbound preview dialer, etc, etc etc that no one is also testing. IPExpert isn't testing a LOT of stuff that COULD be on the exam. So try it yourselves. I still find the IPX stuff valuable. [OSL | CCIE_Voice] V3 notes, etc. HTH
All, As promised here are the questions and my answers, and also since several list members asked about strategy I’ve added a couple sections on both study and lab. Finally I have included a lessons learned section. All of the following is based on my experiences preparing for, and sitting the exam and are in no way representative of what someone else should necessarily do. If they help you, great. If you have a better or alternative method, by all means please help the other list membership by posting it. This is what finally allowed me to pass the V3 lab and hopefully it will aid others in their efforts to do the same. QA I have rec’d and responded to: 1. q. How have the proctors adjusted to the V3 lab content? Are they familiar with it or has anyone encountered confusion or bewilderment on behalf of the proctor due to the new content in lab? a. I asked a few questions of one proctor – none were terribly technical that I can recall, but he was able to answer them immediately and clearly, which implied to me that he was quite familiar with what I was asking about. 2. q. Do you work with Voice more than any other area of Cisco technology? a. Yes I have worked voice - primarily Cisco voice products since 2000. In the last two years it has been exclusively voice. Working with it in the field helps develop troubleshooting techniques and a deeper understanding of the product set system wide, but you also develop habits that don't necessarily transport to the lab well. 3. q. Your history is much like mine, I've taken V1, V2 and now heading toward V3. Can you tell me what you changed in studying that allowed a pass this time? a. I will cover this below in the strategy section below 4. q. I do want to know how long you studied every day, my family is starting to get annoyed by my lack of just being there (lights on but nobody home) when I’m home labbing. How did you cope? Lots of coffee, monster drinks, redbull? a. This is a tough subject and I had it easy by comparison to many on this list. Since it spanned five years it went in spurts and starts – and yes my family did get annoyed at times, but luckily my employer was supportive through the entire gig and when I wasn’t billable I was able to study during the day. Towards the end they also took me off of availability and allowed me to prepare full time. Generally I would lab for about eight to ten hours starting at 6:00AM and then do another 2 to 3 hours of research and technology work after that – or until my brain shut down. Let's face it - what you ask about is time management - it's a big part of the lab preparations as well as the lab itself. I don’t consider myself an expert on this at all – perhaps other folks can contribute thoughts/strategies? 5. q. What is the equipment list of you home lab? a. Please see below – I have no home lab. Training Resources I used IPExpert/Proctorlabs and this list as my sole providers of certification materials and instruction other than materials on CCO. I signed up for their end-to-end program last year and sat two of their instructor led boot-camps (the second time free – per their guarantee). Both classes were very valuable in my overall preparation – not only for the technical information gathered but for the lab strategies and information/analysis of the CCIE Voice sections of Cisco Live. I attribute a good deal of my success in passing this round (V3) to the materials and instruction from IPExpert, as well as all of the V2 materials that are still applicable. I also would like to recognize Vik Malhi for helping me adapt my field deployment habits to effective lab execution routines. Equipment I utilized a mix of Proctorlabs racks and a shared company rack that had 2800s, 3800s, a 3745, UC500 and a 7845 with 8gig fully loaded disk and VMware ESX for the five servers needed for V3. For some exercises the proctorlabs racks were more appropriate. We are utilizing our old Unity 4 box from the V2 lab for the AD/LDAP integration for V3. I had no home lab since my V1 attempts. Preparation Strategy etc. 1. If you haven’t already, figure out your weak points. Mine are speed and stress related mistakes. I never conquered my speed issues but the new lab has some aspects that I will delve into that helped reduce the need for brute speed on the console – for those of us lacking that talent. I took other measures to mitigate my stress related problems, but they still plagued me. 2. When I came to the conclusion I was not going to get one last chance at V2 in late May I concluded that I would need to reset my study habits significantly to account for the change. The first thing I did was to get OFF the gear and read – the SRND, the CCM7 System guide, Features and Services (FS) guide, and the CME Administrator guide. Along with these add a number of other documents like the SIP SRST administrator guide,
