Getting tired of pushing the clutch and shifting gears with the Richmond 5

transmission. Totally bullet proof. It has been a great combo with the
2.73 gears. I think it is time to part with it and go with the 700 R4.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good source. The ol BB has about

This led me to think unsufficient caster or too much negative
caster, but that is not the case. Chevelle caster specs are

Insufficient caster causes wander, road shock, and a light feeling in
the steering. Excessive positive caster can cause hard steering,
shimmy, and tire wear in extreme cases. Unequal caster causes the
vehicle to pull or lead toward the side having the least positive
caster.

A small amount of toe-in is required for optimum vehicle handling and
to prevent steering wander.

Hi Larry,

It’s good to hear you got it taken care of and it
was simple. My old-car-guy mechanic had the
alignment done by an outside shop and I suspect
the alignment people had no clue. I need to call
him and get it over for more caster. In the '50s
and '60s many vehicles with power steering had
much more caster than the manual version.

Took the car for a short ride back to the shop to retrieve the stock sway
bar (like I really needed more old parts). The car did wander, and I
noticed about 1 1/2 to 2 play in the steering wheel. I remembered that
the mechanic stated that he tightened the steering box. This was going
thru my head as I'm driving to the shop. Part of the work order was for
them to weld the coupler to the steering column where it connects to the
rag joint. This piece is pressed on at the factory, and was loose. I
actually had the car towed to the shop because of this. Drivable but
dangerous. If I fails you crash. When I picked the car up I didn't look
at the coupler to see if it was welded. When I arrived back at the shop,
I opened the hood and didn't see any weld. I scooped up the sway bar and
asked the mechanic about the welding and got a blank stare. He asked the
shop owner and he didn't know if it had been done. I dung out the receipt
and the welding was the second item on the instructions. The owner said
he dropped the ball and appollogised (sp).
The mechanic welded up the piece and I went on my way. The car drove
perfect. Will I go back to the shop? Yes. Why? Because I like them and
they are honest. But I will go elsewhere for alignments.

Today is cruise day. It's a beautiful day in the Calif central valley.
But first I'll put the car on the lift and check some bolts...

Hi Larry,

My '65 also came back recently from getting all
new front end stuff and it also wanders. It feels
like I'm driving down the center of a high-crowned
road and whenever you turn a little, it wants to
turn even more and it does not return to center.

I suspect the alignment folks dialed in too much
negative caster, the spec for a '65 SS is 0 to -.5
degree. For other '65 Chevelles it is -.5 to -1.5
degrees. More caster makes them track straight.

Been working on the Chevelle.

All new front end bushings, new 14 wheels from Wheel Smith
that fit over the new disk brakes, new Firestone whitewalls that
look correct, and a much lighter wallet. The new wheels have 1
less backspace so the track is 2 wider. The tires fill the
wheelwell better and the look is good.

The 14 effort was to retain the original SS full wheel covers.

Simply cut off the flares, slide on the male ends and re-flare. You may
already have the male ends on the lines they have just slide down the
lines.
You may also buy premade ends that can be spliced on to the old lines with
a

coupler. Any trans shop, brake or radiator shop can do it for you.

Frugal did not list it, but you caused me to take another look at

It was a little pricey at $30 including freight but it seems to be a rare

Just a little caveat emptor... When I built the engine for my El Camino 4
or 5 years ago, I put one of those shiny chrome thermostat housings on
it. It rotted from the inside and developed a hole, which caused a bad
leak. Today I bought the good old fashioned cast one and the walls of it
are substantially thicker. I was lucky not to get stuck somewhere. I
first noticed it when I was just moving the car from one side of the
street to the other for parking regulations.

No, I have a 180 degree thermostat and in three years it has never run

Hi Dan,

The radiator is a stock 3-row from Truck Shop in Orange, CA. The price was
good but a leak developing when two years old is very disappointing. The
original heater core leaking at 44 years old is not so bad.

You're right, I could bypass the heater but the real fix is to replace it.
I

converted the 16 PSI pressure cap into a 0 PSI cap which should slow both

2009-04-21 Thread dennis.mcgillis

Hi Guys,

My new in 2006 radiator has a small leak and Sunday, while attending the big
Orange Circle car show, it became obvious that my heater core is leaking.
Coolant soaked the padding between carpet and firewall, wetting my son's
foot.

Tonight I snipped the radiator cap to stop pressure from building so I can
drive about 100 miles to four Southern California car shows this weekend.

Now what? Replace the (original) heater core and repair the radiator? I
really know the answer, one should not have to ask the list, one should just
bite the bullet and Get 'er done.

Use a lot of rust buster like WD40 etc on the studs. Let
it sit over night then wack the side of the drum towards the

  Hullo Rick, Dennis and Dale,

After the American Chevies (Impala, Chevelle Chevy II and Corvair, South
Africa switched to the Holden vehicles Australia +- 1968 later named
Chevrolet; Kommando, Constancia, de Ville and Caprice de Ville and then to
the re-badged Opel Rekord Rangerwith the 4cyl 192ci Chevy 2 engine. Brazil
had the Opala as their re-badged Opel. The later Opel models became
Chevrolet 2.5, 3.8 and 4.1 models (American engines) and later as Chev
Rekord, Commodore and Senator with German engines. With Chevrolet back in
South African they are now selling Australian Holden as Chevrolet (Chevy
Spark and Lumina) and also have original Opel and Suzuki models on sale.

The mechanical parts are freely available but the trim parts must be
imported from the USA. All the exterior and interior trim on this Malibu is
still original 43 years old!
The carpet, rooflining and seats have been re-covered. I am looking for
full hubcaps to replace the original rims. I cannot import them as the cost
$400, is equivilant to R3200 (SA) and does not include import duties and
freight, more than triple the cost of a full set of tires or a set of mag
rims. Those mags on the Malibu set me back $240 new.

Visit Dayle Coombe's website http://www.moby302.co.za/ and you will get
the history of Chevrolet in South Africa. Locally (SA) made Chevrolets are
becoming very scarce and it appears that this 1965 Malibu may be the only
surviving one. I know of three Chevelle 300's that are stil around, all 1964
models. More detail of the Malibu is to be seen at:
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3134416

Many imported left hand drive vehicles (Malibu's included) are around and
available, but right hand drive Chevy's and Fords are few.

  Johann

I have a problem with GM SA as they have no inkling of the 60's and cannot
assist me and the US site cannot recognise my details as it is not American.
I would dearly like to get hold of the free Chevrolet restoration pack!

RESTORATION PACK

Is everyone aware that our friends at
Chevrolet will mail you a free Restoration Pack containing much of what
is in the assembly manual, plus a lot more? Call 800-222-1020. For 1967
and earlier have your serial number ready, for 1968 and later they'll
want the VIN.

Holley Idle Setting

Hi Guys,

Everything I have read about setting the idle speed on my 650CFM Holley 4160
with electric choke and vacuum secondary says to adjust the primary and
secondary idle screws in equal amounts.

There is no visible secondary idle screw but the data refers to one under
the carb body. I understand about showing .020 of transition slot primary
and secondary initial throttle blade settings. Is it then necessary to
remove the carb every time you adjust the idle speed?

Thanks for any help.

[Chevelle-list] Hot Restart

2008-06-08 Thread dennis.mcgillis
  Hi Guys,

My hot restart problem happened again Saturday while on a VCCA club tour.
Needless to say I was not pleased when my 2005 crate 350 with HEI cranked
strongly but refused to start. In two previous episodes it started 20
minutes after opening the hood. This time I waited 30 minutes and when it
still wouldn't start called the Hagerty service folks and had it flatbedded
the 13 miles to home. Naturally it started instantly after being deposited
in my garage.

Today I replaced the HEI module and coil for the awesome total of $38 from
my local Kragen/Shucks/Checker store, drove it 30 minutes, shut it off 30
minutes and it started just fine. Cured? Maybe.

  Thanks for the help.

Flooding was my best guess, that's why I cranked it a while with the

Do you have an electric fuel pump? If so, it could be vapor lock. Even
if not, it still could be vapor lock but is less likely. Just a guess.

If leaving it sit w/ the air cleaner off helps it sounds like
flooding, in which case pumping the pedal will not help.

Have you tried letting it sit w/ the pedal to the floor or a
screwdriver holding both the choke and the throttle plate open? If
that works, it's also an indication that your engine is flooding and
needs to evaporate the excess fuel.

What CFM carb do you have? Maybe it's too big for the engine.

It is a possibility. Seems odd it would only do it twice in two years of

Good thoughts from John. Maybe the needle is sticking open or float
sticking allowing excess fuel in the carb from pressure in the line when

the kit, I ordered one for a 69 El Camino not 2-3 weeks ago. Hmmm.

That indicates to me they must have some way of verifying at least some
VINs if they can come back with a registered owner's name.

Do you live in Michigan by chance? Maybe they can check Michigan records
since they're located there. Very interesting indeed.

Hey guys I got ready to fire the 350 tonight that I built for the 71 and I
ran into a little problem. First off when I heard they were changing the
formula of diesel oil I ran out and bought a few gallons a few months ago to be
able to break in a few last engines with it before I had to go with something
else, its Rotella 15W-40 so anyway I topped off the motor and started
priming... about 5 minutes into it all of the drivers side bank was well
oiled. 25 minutes later there is still no oil coming from the passenger
side! What could I have left out to cause this? I poured a little oil down that
side to see if anything would pick up and I primed for awhile longer but still
nothing. The oil pump is pumping at a steady 45 psi with the 1500 rpm drill I
was turning it with. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

My own fight with pre-oiling took days. I tried using the blade from my

need a primer which covers oil ports in the distributor hole. Bought one and
got pressure but like yours, the oil came up through the rockers on only one
bank. Another list member pointed out the trick of turning the crank, I assume
flow is metered by one of the main bearings.
This list is a great resource.

  Subject: [Chevelle-list] Oiling Problem

Hey guys I got ready to fire the 350 tonight that I built for the 71 and
I ran into a little problem.

[Chevelle-list] 283 Flexplate Removal

Sometimes you might need to squirt a little lube on the center to get it loose.
I prefer PB Blaster, great stuff. Try twisting it as you are removing it but
you might also have to resort giving it a few love taps with a rubber mallet.

Tonight I'm trying to remove the flexplate on the original 283 from my 1965

I received the plastic shipping crate ($220 from www.scribnerplastics.com)

wrestle it to the storage place.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Hello? / Engine Storage Box

2008-02-14 Thread dennis.mcgillis

Hi Jim,

Is it the plastic storage box or the $220 that is overkill? The 283 will be
stored outdoors and even with our temperate southern California climate it
would rust badly if just sitting on the pallet so I found the box and also
an engine bag from Eastwood which is supposed to minimize corrosion. And
yup, I did all the normal things to preserve it.

Thanks,
Dennis

Isn't that overkill? Did you flush the cooling system and change the oil?
Spray the cylinders down to keep the rings from rusting?

My first thought is one of those plastic shipping containers. I'm pretty sure
some people make and ship thier engines in themthat way it would be sealed
from anything. I'd spray some oil over everything, wrap it up in a thick
plastic storage bag(they sell these), put in that plastic shipping container
and call it good.

Buy a reproduction Tach specific for your car and RPM range of your motor
from True Connections in Riverside Calif. The repro's look just like the
origional - and work out of the box. They stock and sell parts for just
Chevelles. They can help make sure you are getting exactly what you want and
the tach will work. I would be very careful about buying used electrical items

Longer manifold or head bolts at front and rear will work. New crate engines
come with lifting tabs that bolt to holes on the front of the head on driver

I'm having some bad luck w/ starters. They seem to just burn up if try
to start the engine when it's hot. I hear 1 click, and then that
starter never works again. I replaced one on July 5th and it's already
fried (and I hardly ever even drive the car).

This is a 1969 EC w/ 283/TH350 combo stock x-mans.

I also have always had a problem where the yellow lead to the solenoid
is hot any time the key is in the run position. Because of this, I
can't hook up the starter wiring properly. Instead I have a lead
running from the battery to the cab and another going from the cab to
the solenoid. To start the engine I have to have the key on and then
short the two wires. I have always assumed that this is caused by a
bad ignition switch. The wiring harness was purchased new from MH and
shouldn't be the problem. The battery was replaced in August '07.

Any thoughts on why I'm burning through starters so quickly or why my
solenoid wire is hot while in the run position are appreciated. I need
to get this sorted out because I have gotten stuck twice now with dead
starters.

Also, does anyone know the length of the positive battery cable? I
want to replace mine while I have the starter out.

Thanks,
John Nasta

I guess without a doubt I should be getting one at least for the '70

running soon. The '69 has stock x-mans but the pipes still come very
close to the starter.

Agreed. When bolting a 350 GMPP crate motor in my '65 SS the original cast

Available? Yes in the aftermarket, no from Chevrolet. Tire sizes for 1965
Chevelles included 6.95x14, 7.35x14 and 7.75x14. The full size car had 15-inch
wheels (15x5 or 15x5.5 for police cars) in 65 according to my parts book. There
was also a 3-bar spinner wheel cover available on the full size SS.

The best way to remove old heater hose, in my opinion, is to (1)
loosen/remove clamp then (2) with a box cutter type knife, slit the hose
lengthwise while it's on the heater core bung. Slitting the hose also makes it
easier to remove from the fittings on the intake and/or water pump as well.

Hi Guys,

   1. Was there a 15 wheel available for 1965 Chevelles?

   2. If so, was there a 15 wheel cover for it?

   3. You knew this was coming: If so, does anyone know where to buy them?

Thanks,

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I've
been out of town for a couple days and am just now checking back. I have
thought about cutting out articles, putting them in plastic sleeves, and
cataloging them in the computer. That's a project for a slower
time. I think I'll get the magazine binders and put an index or
inventoryin my computer. As time permits article details
  could be added.

Sounds like the publishersshould offer an
index. I know a mag called ShopNotes offered one with a subscription
renewal and PCWorld or PC Magazine had oneyears ago. I wouldn't
think it would be difficult or expensive for them to do it. They should
  have all the info needed.
  Thanks again.

2006-06-23 Thread Dennis.McGillis
Jim, that is a terrific story. My recent experience with Danchuk in Santa
Ana, CA was not nearly so friendly.

Last November I bought a new SBC short water pump for my crate motor
installation. By April 1 it was finally running, but with an occasional
whine at idle. I recently found it to be the water pump, by using a
stethoscope. When I told them about it they said it was too bad but the
warrantee is only 90 days. The solution: I bought another one and will
return the faulty November pump in the June box.

I bought those at www.summitracing.com The part number
  for mine is RNM-1102P.

If you do a search with just RNM- in the search
box, you will see them all. They come in polished, red or blue for all kinds
  of applications.

To install, you just back out two of your valve
cover bolts, match up the holes and put the bolts back in.

  It costs around $40.

Hi Ryan,

Even more important than the gear ratio is engine RPM at a given
speed. 60 MPH is popular because it is also Revolutions Per Mile.

My 1965 Malibu SS with 14" wheels, Powerglideand 3.31:1 gears (it's
an A/C car) turns about 3000 RPM at 60 MPH. Much more desirable for use on
the highway would be 1800 to 2200 RPM at 60.
