Terry, I agree totally, wander and a light feeling describe what I have. And the steering wheel does not return to center. Re: [Chevelle-list] Alignment Question-Follow up
Hi Larry, It’s good to hear you got it taken care of and it was simple. My old-car-guy mechanic had the alignment done by an outside shop and I suspect the alignment people had no clue. I need to call him and get it over for more caster. In the '50s and '60s many vehicles with power steering had much more caster than the manual version. The car did wander, and I noticed about 1 1/2 to 2 play in the steering wheel. I remembered that the mechanic stated that he tightened the steering box. This was going thru my head as I'm driving to the shop. Part of the work order was for them to weld the coupler to the steering column where it connects to the rag joint. This piece is pressed on at the factory, and was loose. I actually had the car towed to the shop because of this. Drivable but dangerous. If I fails you crash. When I picked the car up I didn't look at the coupler to see if it was welded. When I arrived back at the shop, I opened the hood and didn't see any weld. I scooped up the sway bar and asked the mechanic about the welding and got a blank stare. He asked the shop owner and he didn't know if it had been done. I dung out the receipt and the welding was the second item on the instructions. The owner said he dropped the ball and appollogised (sp). The mechanic welded up the piece and I went on my way. The car drove perfect. Will I go back to the shop? Yes. Why? Because I like them and they are honest. But I will go elsewhere for alignments. Today is cruise day. It's a beautiful day in the Calif central valley. But first I'll put the car on the lift and check some bolts... Larry
Re: [Chevelle-list] Alignment Question
Hi Larry, My '65 also came back recently from getting all new front end stuff and it also wanders. It feels like I'm driving down the center of a high-crowned road and whenever you turn a little, it wants to turn even more and it does not return to center. I suspect the alignment folks dialed in too much negative caster, the spec for a '65 SS is 0 to -.5 degree. For other '65 Chevelles it is -.5 to -1.5 degrees. More caster makes them track straight. Been working on the Chevelle. All new front end bushings, new 14 wheels from Wheel Smith that fit over the new disk brakes, new Firestone whitewalls that look correct, and a much lighter wallet. The new wheels have 1 less backspace so the track is 2 wider. The tires fill the wheelwell better and the look is good. The 14 effort was to retain the original SS full wheel covers. [Chevelle-list] Coolant Leaks!
Hi Guys, My new in 2006 radiator has a small leak and Sunday, while attending the big Orange Circle car show, it became obvious that my heater core is leaking. Coolant soaked the padding between carpet and firewall, wetting my son's foot. Tonight I snipped the radiator cap to stop pressure from building so I can drive about 100 miles to four Southern California car shows this weekend. Now what? Replace the (original) heater core and repair the radiator? I really know the answer, one should not have to ask the list, one should just bite the bullet and Get 'er done. With Chevrolet back in South African they are now selling Australian Holden as Chevrolet (Chevy Spark and Lumina) and also have original Opel and Suzuki models on sale. The carpet, rooflining and seats have been re-covered. I am looking for full hubcaps to replace the original rims. I cannot import them as the cost $400, is equivilant to R3200 (SA) and does not include import duties and freight, more than triple the cost of a full set of tires or a set of mag rims. Those mags on the Malibu set me back $240 new. Visit Dayle Coombe's website http://www.moby302.co.za/ and you will get the history of Chevrolet in South Africa. [Chevelle-list] Hot Restart
Hi Guys, My hot restart problem happened again Saturday while on a VCCA club tour. Needless to say I was not pleased when my 2005 crate 350 with HEI cranked strongly but refused to start. This time I waited 30 minutes and when it still wouldn't start called the Hagerty service folks and had it flatbedded the 13 miles to home. Naturally it started instantly after being deposited in my garage. Today I replaced the HEI module and coil for the awesome total of $38 from my local Kragen/Shucks/Checker store, drove it 30 minutes, shut it off 30 minutes and it started just fine. Cured? Maybe. HTH Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi Guys, Thanks to those who were big help when installing a new 2005 GMPP crate 350 in my 1965 Chevelle Malibu SS. It's been running perfectly for 6,000 miles but twice in the last month refused to start after being driven more than ten miles and stopped for 20 minutes. It cranks fast but does not fire. Fuel comes from the accelerator pump and the choke is open. I tried cranking ten seconds with the accelerator on the floor and tried pumping a couple of times. No go. After letting it sit 20 minutes with the hood open and the air cleaner off it fires instantly. My guess is there is a temperature related ignition problem but for every time it doesn't start it starts just fine dozens of times. Has anyone else had this problem? Or know a solution? Re: [Chevelle-list] Oiling Problem
My own fight with pre-oiling took days. I tried using the blade from my favorite long screwdriver - no pressure. A list member pointed out that you need a primer which covers oil ports in the distributor hole. Bought one and got pressure but like yours, the oil came up through the rockers on only one bank. Another list member pointed out the trick of turning the crank, I assume flow is metered by one of the main bearings. This list is a great resource. Re: [Chevelle-list] JUNK Sanderson headers
Agreed. When bolting a 350 GMPP crate motor in my '65 SS the original cast manifolds were the easiest thing to use, particularly for mounting the original alternator and A/C compressor. When I was 21 years old and wanted the fastest car in my neighborhood, headers would be mandatory, but since I was 21 in 1965 it is less important now. The full size car had 15-inch wheels (15x5 or 15x5.5 for police cars) in 65 according to my parts book. There was also a 3-bar spinner wheel cover available on the full size SS. The best way to remove old heater hose, in my opinion, is to (1) loosen/remove clamp then (2) with a box cutter type knife, slit the hose lengthwise while it's on the heater core bung. Slitting the hose also makes it easier to remove from the fittings on the intake and/or water pump as well. Re: [Chevelle-list] Satisfaction Guarantee
Jim, that is a terrific story. My recent experience with Danchuk in Santa Ana, CA was not nearly so friendly. Last November I bought a new SBC short water pump for my crate motor installation. By April 1 it was finally running, but with an occasional whine at idle. I recently found it to be the water pump, by using a stethoscope. When I told them about it they said it was too bad but the warrantee is only 90 days. The solution: I bought another one and will return the faulty November pump in the June box. In the '50s, '60s and '70s glasspacks and turbos were popular. Long glasspacks give a low rumble, short ones can be loud. Turbos are not so low pitched and have a mellow sound. Hi Ryan, Even more important than the gear ratio is engine RPM at a given speed. 60 MPH is popular because it is also Revolutions Per Mile. My 1965 Malibu SS with 14" wheels, Powerglideand 3.31:1 gears (it's an A/C car) turns about 3000 RPM at 60 MPH. Much more desirable for use on the highway would be 1800 to 2200 RPM at 60.
