Frame Relay with back to back serial cable

2000-06-16 Thread Zach Stewart

Omer,

Here is a good URL to accomplish this.

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/125/26.html

Here are a few hints...

1. encapsulation frame-relay cisco, ietf Which is the default?
2. frame-relay lmi-type ansi, cisco, q933a

*If you don't specify lmi-type and your code is 11.2F and above what will
the IOS do?

3. sh controll ser 0 or 1 the DCE side needs what?

If you really want to have some fun, turn one of the routers into a
frame-relay switch. Connect the spokes to serial 0 and serial 1 if you read
through the above URL you will be able to come us with the rest, if not let
us know. Have fun!

Re: Equipment

2000-06-16 Thread Richard Holland

2500 series routers are fine, I just bought two for my home lab. They're
cheap (in terms of Cisco hardware) and easy to find, especially on ebay.
2600's can get expensive. The main thing to remember is: get IP enterprise
IOS, and make sure the routers you get have the interfaces you want. If you
do that, you can't go wrong. My routers use 11.3 and 12.0, try to stick
with 11.2 or 11.3.

Subject: Equipment

 Hi,

I have a question about equipment. I just recieved my copy of routersim in
the mail. Still trying to figure out what kind of shoddy routers it
actually
 simulates.
Anyway I was going to buy the real equipment anyway, pick up a couple
2501's. A co-worker had said to get the 2600 series instead because it is
newer and would be easier to sell later on. Personally I'm not to worried
about loosing $$ because I get lots of enjoyment out of this sort of
thing.
Anyway he had also told me not to buy routersim so I'm wondering if he's
right about the 2600's also. So I'm asking the list for advice on this.
 Thanks!
 James

Version 1.0 or version 2.0

2000-06-16 Thread JohnMail

Folks:

Recently I completed CCNA 1.0 (822). My plan is to complete CCDA 1.0 before
the July 31 changeover to CCDA 2.0.
Does this make any sense ? Will I have to do them all over again after July
31 when CISCO switches to VERSION 2.0 ?

I bought lots of CCNP 1.0 books a few months ago and I am now beginning to
use these books. Will they be of any use for CCNP 2.0 or should I throw
them out and get the CCNP 2.0?

Thanks for all comments and suggestions in anticipation.

I had talked to Cisco about this, because at one time they had claimed thier
VPN software was 2k compatible. Well I was told that their software wasn't
compatible (they imediatly removed the claim from their site) and that the
PIX would support the MS 2k VPN client in the summer. At this time I was

on June 9th. While browsing through the 5.1(2) release notes I noticed no
mention of Win 2k compatibility. 8(

CCNA 2.0

2000-06-16 Thread BB

Hi,
I'm planning to take it next week.
I had go through the Office Exam guide for CCNA 1.0 and took some sample
test questions on it.
Also, I've read the ICND text book.

I don't know how much difference between 1.0 and 2.0.
I'd like to ask if it is enough to take it now.

If not, what else should I read?

Thx

security expert, help!

2000-06-16 Thread zhencai

Hi,

I have users dial in to AS5300s, using Cisco Secure as first authentication,
AXENT token server as second authentication. When users (using token cards)
dials in, they are chanllenged by AXENT. The problem is sometimes, they are
prompted to enter username and password after token authentication (but they
don't have any username or password). Somestimes, they don't have any
problem and can log in after the token authentication. I have AXENT tech
come check our configuration but they can't find anything wrong. Any
recommendation is highly appreciated.

Your guys "in the field" are using dialup and are getting
a dynamic addy via DHCP ? What's the DHCP server ?
Cisco or M$ ? No error msgs, and plenty of address space?

I am using Eigrp 109 for my routing protocol.

OK^2, tho we don't care about the 109

 Here is is my setup?

  distribute-list 6 out Serial0.3
  distribute-list 6 out Serial0.4
  distribute-list 6 out Serial0.5
  distribute-list 6 out Serial0.6

Um, the rest of the config may be important :-)
Hey, if you're RFC1918, you don't even need to be embarrassed
about posting it ;-)

Why is it we have to clear the Arp tables so the 192.168.1.0
can come inbound to the 10.X.X.X network.

Dunno.
Does it *ever* work ?
Do you just 'clear arp' sometimes when it breaks ?
Or do you have to 'clear arp' to get it working at all ?
Did you try clearing out just /some/ arp entries ?
Who figured out that clearing the arp cache would help,
and how did they figure that out ?

(I used to work w/ JPMorgan. Whenever I called the NOC w/
a networking problem, the tech would say, "Hang on, I'm
gonna clear the arp cache." If that didn't work, he'd
flush the routing table. Then he'd call an operator. Hmmm...)

Any ideas what I should try?

More description of the problem.
A sniffer.

Re: CCNP tests

2000-06-16 Thread John Huston

This doesn't answer your question directly but might give your some insight.

Dear Group:

You are receiving this message because you expressed an interest in joining
a CCNP study group.

The message below is from the author/owner of Winflash. He has agreed to
host our questions to make it more convenient for us to up/download them.
The only prerequisites are that you 1.) Buy the Winflash program at
www.openwindow.com and 2.) Contribute 20-30 questions and answers per
chapter of the book that you are of studying in. Questions and answers can
be accompanied with sounds, hints, graphics, etc. You are only limited by
your imagination. The folks at Openwindow cannot monitor who contributes and
who doesn't. THEREFORE THIS IS AN HONOR SYSTEM.

If we think of contributions in the same way that the various programmers
have provided code and programs for the Linux operating system I think you
will agree that the potential for certification becomes more efficient.
Please send any other suggestions and soon as you can so we can get to work
and start making the big bucks. Below are suggested guidelines to keep in
mind about contributing questions and answers. They are not the law, only
suggestions to help keep us organized.

1.) Do not plagiarize anything. The best thing to do is make up your own
questions and

answers.

2.) Do not so anything violate that might jeopardize your non-disclosure
agreement with

CISCO.

3.) Try to contribute some of the more obscure information that that we
might be tested over.

4.) Contribute as much as you can.

5.) Do your best and don't worry if everything isn't perfect. Provide as
much as you can and

don't bite off more than you can chew. Also please commit to a due date as
to when

will have your QA's done by.

6.) Compliment your peers often. They will contribute more if they think it
is appreciated.

My Roles and Responsibilities

I will personally provide 300-400 questions for the CLSC exam
640-404(http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/pdf/
clsc.pdf) and will have those ready for download no later than June 23.
Attached is a sample of questions that I have started for this exam. I know
this exam expires in July but I do not have any other course study material
at this time.

Your Roles and Responsibilities

Please submit to the group what you are willing to work on and when you will
have it done by via an email AND to the groupstudy.com message group.

Good luck to everyone taking the tests and I hope that you will enjoy
working with the group.

Tom,

Mark.

Mark,

Thats is not quite all that you have to do. In order to get onto the CCDP
exam track you have to be a CCNA and CCDA. From that point you must then
pass either the FRS or ACRC, CLSC, CMTD once you have done that then you
should take the CCDP. You cna verify this on Cisco's website:

Tom

Which tests should I take after I got my CCNP in order to achieve CCDP? Is
CID the only test I should take care of?

Typo in config...

2000-06-16 Thread Keith Woodworth

A while back I was working in getting a 2502 up and running. It had old
boot proms in it, 8 meg flash and 8 meg of ram. The old boot roms did not
recognize the flash.

I managed to get it going by getting it to boot via tftp via a unix box,
going through a 1005 first to get to the unix box.

My first attempt I made a typo that I cant get rid of now. Well its not
really a typo but a backspace that came out w/ an esc char first.

boot system c2500-is56-l_112-21.bin^[OD 255.255.255.255
   ^
this was about 6 months ago. In that time I got new boot roms for it and
have a new image written that boots from flash now.

If I remember right this was a back space that I did and thats how it came
out. As its the first line in the config for booting it times out the
boots from:

boot system flash c2500-is56-l_112-21.bin

How can I get rid of the first line above with the special characters?

Thanks,
Keith

re: OSPF correction

I may have to abdicate the throne:)

The correct formula for OSPF's calculating cost is 100 Mbps/bandwidth.

You are the OSPF king, charles :)
Load balancing with ospf happens automatically, assuming the two
interfaces
have the same cost.
The fact that they are load balancing per packet or per destination
depends
on the switching mechanism on the router.

Last note, if you want a router not to be a DR , set the priority to
zero, I
believe the default is one, the decision if both routers have the same
priority will go the router with the highest IP (router ID) address,
this is
another good reason to use loopbacks with OSPF.

Elias,

I am going to display my awesome lack of OSPF knowledge in public, so
bear with me:)

The ip ospf cost and ip ospf priority are interface specific
commands:
unless something drastic has happened at Cisco, you can not enter them
under the ospf process configuration mode as implied here.

Priority only affects DR elections: it has no impact on route
selection.

Cost is a trickier one, but generally speaking, it does affect route
selection. If you have two routes to the same destination, you can set
the cost of one higher than the other, and the lower cost one will be
preferred (assuming it is up and operational, of course).

OSPF calculates the cost of each interface using the formula of
interface bandwidth/100Mbps; the resulting number is the cost of the
interface by default.

You could also indirectly set the interface cost by setting the
bandwidth of the interface higher or lower using the the bandwdith
command: OSPF will then calculate based on that.

I am not going to get into load balancing between interfaces to the
same
destination because, frankly, it's beyond the scope of my brain. I hope
the previous info helps even a little bit.

Why do you want the CCNA certification? Are you

working in the networking arena? If not, my

hanging on your wall and
i think that's what most of us would rather not see
happen. Or maybe it's
too late for that...

On the other hand, if you're serious about becoming

Re: Making a switch behave like a hub

2000-06-16 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

Hello,

This may sound like a silly question bear with me for a moment...

Is it possible to get a 24 port L2 switch instead of 4 different hubs to
have 4 different networks?
The reason why I don't want to use a hub in the first place is because I
don't want any changes made to the frame as it goes thru the switch
fabric. Does this make sense or 4 hubs is the only way to go?

Thanks in advance.

--Manny

Simple answer: usually yes.

More complex: what problem are you trying to solve? Even in a hub,
the bits that come in on one port are not the same physical bits that
exit on another port. They will be regenerated, so it's arguable if
the frame changes or it's simply a frame copy.

When going through a bridge/switch, the FCS will be recomputed,
although it may have exactly the same value as on the input.

I'm having surgery today and may be offline for a couple of days to a week.

I really thought that this was an easier test then the CCNA exam. I'll

RE: connect routers together with Token ring interface

2000-06-16 Thread Glenn Flood

Daniel,

Yes, you need what is called a MAU or Multistation Access Unit.

I have two on eBay that I am selling. They are both IBM 8228's and are in
perfect condition.

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=357452542

You will also need some cables to connect it all together. Sorry, but I am
still using all mine. But, if you do a search on eBay under the networking
category for "Token Ring", you will find everything else that you need. You
might also want to consider getting a couple of TR NIC cards so that you can
put a few PC's on the ring.

Hope this helps.

Re: Back to Back router DCE/DTE question

2000-06-16 Thread John Neiberger

Everyone can ignore this one. This is a post I sent several days ago and
i've already discovered the cause of my confusion! :-)

John Neiberger

I seem to remember that Chuck tested this but I can't remember the
outcome.
The question was this: if you have two routers connected back to back,
one
is physically the DCE while the other DTE and this is determined by the
cable end connected to the router. But I seem to remember that it didn't
matter which side provided the clocking, which made us think that there
is a
physical layer DTE/DCE pair, as well as a distinct datalink layer pair.

Is that the case? I don't have the means to test this at the moment or
I'd
  just set it up myself.

  Thanks, as always!

Some of its output is easy to understand, but it uses a lot of

You must have the same revision of code on both routers or you might get
garbage for VOIP. The data will still flow, but for some reason unless the
routers are on the same revision then VOIP will not work right. I would
recommend 12.0.7 IP PLUS or later. Some of the earlier releases of VOIP
have many bugs in them.

Folks,

Thanks for all that have replied. One thing to mention that Charles was the
only one to mention that " ip ospf cost and ip ospf priority are interface
specific commands " Nothing drastic changes at Cisco Charles. It was just Me
and I (brain was hurting ) putting the config together on top of my head...

But thanks for mentioning that and my problem was resolved by using the
bandwidth command and playing with the some of the metrics.

Thanks all
Elias

"Atif Awan" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Cost does affect route selection. OSPF determines the best route to a
destination based upon the metric called cost. By default cost is calculated
using the formula :

Cost = 10exp8/ bandwidth of the interface ( i think so :) )

You need to set the correct bandwidth for serial links using the bandwidth
command. Make sure you understand that the bandwidth command is just an
informational command that tells the different routing protocols about the
actual bandwidth of an interface. This command has nothing to do with the
data transmission rate.

The 2948G-L3 runs IOS and is really a 50 port router. The 2948(I believe)
runs the cat 5000 firmware. I'm not real sure exactly what you are trying
to do, but if you are wanting VLAN information you will need to do either
ISL or 802.1Q. To use the 2948G-L3 as a "switch" you will have to configure
BVI interfaces and bridge groups.

I just discovered this undocumented command and I'm wondering if anyone
 else
knows anything about it, like how to interpret its output. This looks
 like
it might be helpful for troubleshooting purposes, but I found ZERO
references to it on CCO except for in some IOS release notes stating
that
there was a bug involving this command that could cause some routers to
crash. Nothing else about it. zip...nada.

Some of its output is easy to understand, but it uses a lot of
 abbreviations
gets to be cryptic fairly quickly.

  Anybody seen this?

  Thanks,

Mpps

2000-06-16 Thread Eduardo Negreiros

Hi, people!
A design question: What means pps?
Cisco 3660 have 100.000 pps of routing performance. What means this?
Could I think:

100,000 pps (x64) = 6,400,000Bps (packets to bytes)
640Bps (/100) = 6.4 MBps (bytes to Mbytes)
6.4 MBps (x8)= 51.2 Mbps (Mbytes to Mbits)
51.2Mbps (/2) = 25 serial ports of 2 Mbps (Mbits to 2M ports)

Could I conclude that Cisco 3660 can process the data of 25 2Mbps
serial ports?
Or I have to get a half of this result (IN/OUT) and find a maximum of 12
serial ports of 2Mbps?

Best Regards,
Eduardo Negreiros

DSL router with dialup backup

2000-06-16 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

If I get ADSL Internet access with my local telco, the DSL can run on one of
my existing phone lines, and by using VPN I can create a connection between
a branch office and the head office.

If I choose to have route redundancy by using a DSL router that have the
ability to use a modem, and then setup an additional 56Kbps modem route with
a higher cost, it should dial my head office in case the DSL route goes
down.

BUT, has anyone ever seen the ADSL being down but the phone line still up?

Also, how often does it happen that a DSL connection is down?

A third (off topic / off the subject) question:

I currently have a mixed Novell NetWare 4.1 and Windows NT 4.0 network with
HP printers connected to the network with HP jetdirect nic's. I am currently
using Novell's print queues for the net print services (which is working
very well), but I would like to use my Novell server as a boat anchor, and I
have not had to good experience with NT's print services, and I would like
to be able to print directly to the printer at my branch offices, instead of
having the data sent over and back the WAN first. Using Windows 98
workstations, what would be a good way of solving this problem?

Thanks for any comments on this,

Ole

RE: IPSec and W2K Client?

2000-06-16 Thread Diegmueller, Jason (I.T. Dept)

I did a post to one of the Cisco newsgroups recently about the CVPN3005
(formerly Altiga C5). Here you go:

== SNIP ==
Well, I have to hand to to Cisco. Good choice on the purchase of
Altiga.

I've done VPNs off of the PIX before, and can't say it was the easiest
thing I had ever done. My company was looking to roll out VPN on a much
larger scale, and my Cisco AM recommended against not sticking with the
PIX as 1) it's an older PIX (PIX1), 2) it's also playing firewall for
our entire network, and 3) Cisco seems to be tossing most of it's
development in to the new unified Altiga/Compaitble Systems stuff.

So I went ahead and purchased a CVPN 3005 (formerly Altiga C5). I must
say, I'm quite impressed. Configuration is a little bit different then
I'm use to (the CLI isn't really CLI; it's more or less text-based menus),
and I normally cringe at the thought of an http-based configuration tool
.. but in this case it wasn't so bad.

The unit itself and the documentation still say Altiga all over (no Cisco
rebranding yet). IMO, the documentation sucks (more or less every command
gets an "overview", but not really a good explanation) but after 2 hours
of dinking around I now have a working VPN Server that supports IPSec and
PPTP (so I can continue to support our legacy NT PPTP RAS clients while
migrating them to the new 3DES IPSec client).

Other then a bug I ran in to in the first 3 minutes (trying to create
static routes from the console), I had no problems. I was able to create
static routes via the web interface, and a call to TAC revealed it indeed
was a bug. He made 2.2.1 (the patched 2.2.0) available for me on CCO, and
this immediately resolved the problem.

If anyone else is evaluating VPN solutions, make sure to take a look at
the Cisco CVPN3000 series. Neat little boxes, very scaleable .. I'm quite

basket--they're promising merging the features of the Compatible Systems
(another VPN company Cisco recently bought) such as Linux, Solaris,
Windows 2000 support in to their new "Unified" IPSec client (one client
with the capability of connecting to whatever you have on the
backend--router, PIX, VPN Concentrator) in the very near future, so it
should be fun.

Not a Cisco employee obviously, just wanted to give you guys some insight
in to my experience with a new one of their toys. Next step: Migrating a
router we have terminating to the PIX over to the CVPN3005. Maybe I'll
let you guys know how that goes.

OT: Database/Software for documenting WAN infrastructure?

2000-06-16 Thread Kristofer Arthur

I have been looking high and low for something that I can use as a
database/repository for all my WAN information. I'm looking at about 100
sites and need circuit info, frame relay dlci info, site contacts, router
maintenance contracts, PVC information, etc.

I have attempted a database in Notes - which failed.

I am attempting a database in Access now - which is on the way of failing.

I am no database guru by any means.

Isn't there a product out there that allows for a repository/database of all
your sites with all the related WAN stuff including PVC, DLCI, WAN LAN IP
addresses, etc.?

I do not want to use Visio Enterpise as that is a visual tool. I need
something I can create reports on as we are throwing out new sites and PVCs
all the time.

Any help? What do you guys/gals use?

Thanks!

ios 9.21

2000-06-16 Thread John F. Davis

Hello

I am using ios 9.21 and I enabled encrypted passwords. Now,
I can not use my password.

I used the cisco documented method to see my password via
the diag mode and the password is indeeed what I set it to.

However, when I enter the password, it doesn't work. What gives?
Someone on the net told me that in ios 9.21 you need to enter your
password "encrypted", but I didn't quite follow him. i.e,
if you want your password to be "foo" you need to enter "8yx" or
some such nonsense.

Any help would be appreciated.

Guys, be very careful with advice on access-list on production routers. The
best practice for adding or changing access-list is to remove it from the
interface before modifying it. The implicit deny all can be a real disaster
with typos and the like when working from remote location. Be sure to remove
the old access-list with a no access-list # before pasteing back the new
one.

Use a terminal emulator (I know Procomm Plus does this) and cut the access
list. Put it to notepad and edit the list just the way that you want it
in
 the correct order.

You will need to prepend to this list the correct access list command and
access list number that you want to use. Then paste this back into the
router config mode command. This will add in the new access list, in the
correct order...Or you can rewrite the whole list manually again.

I am sure that there is an easier way to do this again.but that is the
 way that we do ours.

The deny all is implicit...and is applied at the end of your access list.

 Subject: Access-lists question??

 Hi,
I am trying to understand something with access-lists. They
 say that when
you put in a new entry to an existing access-list, it will
 be written at the
end of the existing list. So If I have a deny any any at the
 end of the list
and I add a new entry that says permit 10.20.16.20, this
 will not work as
this entry will be added at the end of the list. But when I
 do a sh
access-lists or a sh run, I see that the new entry is not at
 the bottom of
the existing list. I am trying to understand, even though it
 is not at the
bottom, when the access-list is read, will it find it before
 the deny any
any or not? Moreover, I have read that the Cisco IOS will
 rearrange the
list. Is this the reason that the new entry does not show at
 the bottom but
will work as entered in the end?
 Please advise.
 Thank you.
 Kind regards,
 Niraj

You could wait until it reboots again (if you're aware of exactly when it
occurs) and then telnet in yourself if see if he's using the console port.
If so, send him a message via telnet to get the heck off of there. Catching
him in the act would probably be a good deterrent. I believe the command is
"send line #" to send a message. This all is assuming that he's not
changing the vty passwords while he's in there.

Good luck!

Need for two hats?

2000-06-16 Thread Montgomery, Robert WARCOM Contractor

As I finish my Solaris certification (and continue on with CCNP), I still
wonder if there is really a need for the two skill sets (at once).

I want to work in and with a Cisco world so I wonder if having and
maintaining the two certifications (as opposed to just maintaining and
growing one) is "worth" it. It helps in salary, yes, but also take a lot of
time and effort.

Any thoughts or more specifically, any real-world examples on how the two
combined are being used?

Run NOCOL or similar to track when the router goes down and call
them or attempt to telnet in (which will likely be unsuccessful).

Change the console port parameters to an oddball speed.

Install a UPS.

Set up an SNMP community with appropriate filters so you can put things
back to normal.

Does other gear on the same circuit also have these "power problems"?

Is this on a production network?

Why hasn't this individual been fired yet?

Dear George,

Don't panic, just approach the task seriously. You've got a good reference in the
Sybex book. As a CCNA, the DCN is doable in 9 days. The CCDA test is among the most
failed in the certification track; I think it's because it's not taken seriously

The Sybex book will help focus you on the material. In addition, there are good tips

I work in Telemedicine research for Dpt of the Army and we have a groupt that
is looking at many different uses for wireless technology and PDA computing
in the medical environment. We now even have a Wireless Medical working group
focused primarily on that. Reference material, drug calculators, soon patient
data entry, electronic patient records and many more are all being looked at
to make medical decisions more accurate and the patient process more
efficient. There are quite a few medical PDA sites out there doing alike and
some pretty ingenious apps available.

That's mostly what I use mine for -- that and appointments. Which
was irritating in the hospital, because I couldn't find phone numbers
 and calling card numbers.

Actually, my cardiologist uses his in ways we might want to look at
for networking. He has it maxed out on memory, and also has some
reference books on ROM. He can, for example, pull up drug doses and
 also check for drug interactions.

It isn't hard for me to picture putting the IOS command reference,
perhaps some lists of ports and addresses, error codes, etc. on a
 pocket-sized device.

I vaguely remember someone saying they had configured one as a TFTP
server through the serial port. Not sure how much memory you could
 put in one.

On a somewhat related note, the Navy has been working with putting
documentation on CD-ROM, and putting it in a Walkman-style player
connected to a heads-up display. This has the advantages of reducing
what often are tons of documentation carried on shipboard, and also
allowing hands-free use of documentation. It's hard to turn pages

RE: Help me catch a Hacker

2000-06-16 Thread Rahman, Abdul

If you are using some snmp trap agent
like openview you can narrow the time that that the
box goes down. Then if you are motivated you can
assign that specific snmp trap to attempt to run
a set of diagnostics against the box to be able to
determine its exact state. That is, can you telnet?
If so can you log in, etc, etc. If you are using
openview on unix, then a shell script using an 'expect'
type of script or perl would accomplish this in a very
nice fashion.

Also:

How is he actually getting into the box? If it is
across a network then perhaps you can add a router between
his subnet and the 7000. Then you can log, i believe,
routes from his ip address across that router; correlate
to the down time that you get from openview. Using these
two you can get some data on "attacks" on the box.

If he is using a console type connect then perhaps you need to
think about securing the area and making sure that policies are in
place to guard the box.

Hope this helps.

I don't know how much difference between 1.0 and 2.0.
I'd like to ask if it is enough to take it now.

If not, what else should I read?

RE: port-forwarding

2000-06-16 Thread Daniel Cotts

Rather than NAT is sounds more like PAT when one address is used for all
translations. There is no consistent port to port mapping used in PAT. It is
not my experience that an outside computer can reach a specific inside
machine. Generally you need additional ouside addresses to static map to the
inside (server) boxes. The single PAT address is used by all other inside
boxes for traffic that they originate.

You have probably already received responses but here's my take (I'm
scheduled to take this one at the end of the month).

The new exam doesn't cover NEARLY as much hardware specific topics as the
1.0 exam did. For example, you won't get questions asking about
 how many of
what type of blades a certain chassis will hold or what is the maximum
amount of memory a switch can be upgraded to. Rather, this
 test covers
the technology. Stuff like VLAN, ELAN, VTP, ISL, EtherChannel, Spanning
Tree, etc. This test is supposed to be written much better as well, with
 little or no ambiguous questions.

Me personally, I have the Sybex CLSC book, which I don't find
 very good (no
offense Todd). I have heard nothing but rave reviews (5 stars on Amazon)
about the LAN Switching Cisco Press book, which I have ordered.
 Of course,
the best material, albeit the toughest to find and organize,
 comes from CCO.

 Good luck!

it is plugged in. If anyone can tell me what to look for in a sh
controllers or has another way I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

RE: port-forwarding

2000-06-16 Thread Stull, Cory

With the Cisco 700 series you can do this using pat porthandler,
unfortunately with all other boxes you have to setup the static nat, with a
pix its called a static pipe and then you open up a conduit to allow traffic
through it.

Is there a way to do a similar thing with a PIX?
If you have two separate boxes. One doing SMTP mail and the other doing
WWW.
Can you make the pix differentiate by port number and send to different
inside devices?

I have an issue that I have been mulling over for a while and have arrived
at no conclusions. I was wondering if anyone here might be able to help.

I have a 2611 routing 3 computers to a DSL connection. The router is running
NAT since I was only allocated 1 static IP. All internal systems are set to
192.168.X.X class IP's. Is there any was possible to set up any sort of
port-forwarding that would, for example, take any external ssh request (port
22) to my static IP and forward it to my internal FreeBSD box?

Thanks

Difference between OSPF on NBMA Broadcast and Point-to-Multipoint?

2000-06-16 Thread Yonker Bonk

Could anyone clarify for me the difference between OSPF on NBMA Broadcast
and Point-to-Multipoint? The configuration looks the same to me. I'm using
the All-in-One CCIE Study Guide as reference, lab 37 or something. I know
that with P-to-M, that no DR is elected and whatnot, but could you give me
something more concrete? What is real world difference? When would you ever
run an NBMA network as broadcast? To cut down on configuration?
Thanks.

Michael

RE: Cisco Documentation CD

2000-06-16 Thread Ledwidge, Feargal

The CD's search engine uses Verity's search engine. This is waht their FAQ
says:

No, the current release of CD Web Publisher will not work on Windows
2000. Windows 2000 has significant architecture changes from its
predecessors. As a result, your current CD Web Publisher application will
not work. Support for Windows 2000 is planned. This support will require
the creation of a new application (i.e.: you will not be able to addthis
functionality into your existing application).

So ... we'll just to wait and see

Anyone get a recent version of the Cisco Doc CD to run under Win2000 and use
IE instead of Netscape? I tried the Jan2000 version but it doesn't seem to
want to run under Netscape and IE. Anyone?

Russ..
