RE: an AppleTalk question

The G means that the route is good. You should either see a G, S, or B.

G-Good
S-Suspect
B-Bad

hi,everyone!
I have a question about AppleTalk when I show the AppleTalk route.
for example:

RTA#sh appletalk route
Codes: R - RTMP derived, E - EIGRP derived, C - connected, A - AURP
   S - static P - proxy
4 routes in internet

The first zone listed for each entry is its default (primary) zone.

C Net 400-499 directly connected, Ethernet0, zone accounting
  Additional zones: 'service '
E Net 500-599 [2/G] via 600.2, 104 sec, Serial0, zone sales
Additional zones: 'service'
C Net 600-600 directly connected, Serial0, zone wan1
E Net 700-700 [1/G] via 600.2, 605 sec, Serial0, zone wan2
RTA#

what mean of the letter "G" in the [2/G].

thank you very much and please write a mail to me.

Do you have a router there to route between the VLANs? How are you pinging

Re: 7505/7513 MIX bus enabled?????

2000-10-19 Thread Albert

MIX-Enabled - the chassis will handle the new Digital-signal Processor which
is coming out. The old/current 7500 series will not accept the new DSP
modules. By putting the this feature in, the router can act terminate POTS
and connect to PBX for complete VoIP setup. Think of a 3662 with more power
and capability.

Dual Bus - 2 bus (backplane channels) for 2 gigabits of bandwidth. Kind of
backup also, if one bus fail (rare), the unit will still function with one
bus. I don't believe Cisco is still offering single Bus 7500 anymore.

Re: [IOS Version]

2000-10-19 Thread Erick B.

Hi,

You can go to the cisco web site and browse through
the release notes/order by product # pages. These
pages contain many tables cross referencing features
to which feature set they are in.

Or you can use Feature Navigator (need CCO) to choose
features you need and it will tell you what IOS has
them. On the last page, if you select ALL release, the
output will contain the feature set name, image name,
and memory requirements. As well as a link to find out
what all the features are in a particular image.

I agree that Ciscopress books are better than other publishers I've seen.
When I was studying for CCNA I bought a book by Global Knowledge titled

Beta Results areout on Cisco Secure VPN..

2000-10-19 Thread Nigel Taylor

Hi All,
Just a quick note to let everyone(those interested) know that the
"Cisco Secure VPN" results have been posted a the tracking site.

With the newly posted format of the MCNS as of Jan 01, these Channel Partner
exams will serve a purpose in the long run.

By the way I passed, I'll have to get the slyvan report to see how this exam
was broken down. Lots, and lots of Cisco specific VPN stuff on this
exam..along with a mix of IPSEC and general VPN theory.

I just couldn't find it in the release notes/docs on cisco. From what I
could see, Frame Relay switching was introduced in 11.2, and AGS+ will
only goto 11.0.

I just double checked CCO. Release notes for 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 and
11.0. None of them support Frame Relay switching..

But I would be very interested in doing FR switching on an AGS+, so if you
can point me to something that shows I can do this, please, that would
make my day (And save me some money!!)

It might be cheaper out of the pocket but after 2 months or more , a
simulator is cheaper since you can sell it (if it's in decent shape) for
about 80% of the price you had paid for at ebay. A teltone simulator can be
bought at ebay at around $1850 and you can probably sell it back at around

The AGS is perfect for the Frame-Switch role. For the money you can't beat
it. If you ever get a chance to check out CCIE Bootcamps, they use this
router in their dial-in lab racks. 10.0 & up support DLSW, Frame-Relay

Use the command: terminal monitor

That should do the trick.

If you have a $25,000 limit, then go with a 7202/7204/7206. Should fall
within budget, fast, nice, well supported boxes. The 7000's get a little
crazy. You have older cards, and then you have newer cards that need the
RSP7000 and VIP's installed. This can get expensive. Even FE for a 7000
can get expensive, and you may end up wishing you went the 7200 route.

Hi everyone!

I search for a solution, that can log all commands a user put in at CLI. I
want set permission for some commands. The program must be run on a Sun
Solaris.
I will log, what Command a User executes. For example "int atm0/4.0 -> atm
pvc 10 10.
I tried it with Cisco Secure, but with this application I can log only
when the user get via telnet to the router.

Any idea?

T3 & FastEthernet Bridging Question

2000-10-19 Thread Andre Fecteau

Hello,

I need:
Min: 1Fast Ethernet port
Min: 1DS3(T3) port 45Mbps
unchannelized
A CAM big enough to accomodate these high speeds.

I heard the 7020 & 7040 have the ability to use a T3(Route Switch
Processor) and FE (no scalability from there, but that's OK). How will
the performance compare to using a dedicated switch, like a cat 5500 or
6000 with a DS3 and FE? My boss says that the cam on the 7020 or like
router would be too small to accomodate the high speeds, is this true?
I have to have a DS3 or T3 and FE in the same box and I need to bridge
them. This is part of a project and I need to know the best way of
doing this. I have a 25K cap! Otherwise this would be much easier.

Another idea I had was to get the 7020 with a T3 and FE, then have
another switch and put that and the 7020 in the same vlan. I thought
maybe this would compensate for the small CAM in the 7020. If what my
boss said is correct, will this work?

Please excuse my little knowledge and experience with the subject! If
I'm way of base feel free to tell me where I'm ignorant!!! Can somebody

Re: 7505/7513 MIX bus enabled?????

2000-10-19 Thread John Deatherage

>From CCO (the 7200 VXR series also supports this):
(this is also vaporware for now - "future voice applications")

MIX-Enabled Chassis
The new Cisco 7500 MIX-enabled chassis is identical to the current Cisco
7500 classic chassis plus the addition of a new multiservice capability: the
Multiservice Interchange (MIX) backplane. Future voice applications will
provide seamless, end-to-end call management in both the packet and digital
voice domains. A Cisco 7500 series router with the MIX-enabled chassis and
the DSP-farm capabilities of the digital voice port adapters provides a
high-density voice and fax gateway solution to connect private branch
exchanges (PBX), the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and the WAN to
create a multiservice network. In addition, MIX-enabled multichannel port
adapters will combine digital voice channels with packet channels on a
channelized access link to achieve access cost savings, without requiring a
separate time-division multiplexing (TDM) multiplexer. This will allow DS0
channels to be switched from a channelized WAN link to interfaces connecting
to PBX, video CODEC, or other TDM-oriented devices. These multiservice
capabilities give customers a manageable migration path to robust,
cost-effective, multiservice networks.

A few things before I present the solution. If you are trying to do Web
Cache redirection/transparent proxying, you really should be using
WCCP. If you give us more detail about why you are doing this and what
applications you are doing this for, a better solution can be
provided. But without knowing, I can only offer policy routing, which
will work regardless:

Ok, for this I will assume 172.16.1.0/24 is your network. 172.16.1.3 is
your router, and 172.16.1.163 is your web cache:
!
interface Ethernet0
 ip address 172.16.1.3 255.255.255.0
 no ip directed-broadcast
 no ip mroute-cache
 ip policy route-map proxy-redir
!
access-list 110 deny tcp host 172.16.1.163 any eq www
access-list 110 permit tcp any any eq www
route-map proxy-redir permit 10
 match ip address 110
 set ip next-hop 172.16.1.163

then on the linux server, you will need to capture port 80 and conver to
port 8002:

in rc.local just put like:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

# Accept all on loopback
/sbin/ipchains -A input -j ACCEPT -i lo
# Accept my own IP, to prevent loops (repeat for each interface/alias)
/sbin/ipchains -A input -j ACCEPT -p tcp -d 172.16.1.163 80
# Send all traffic destinated to port 80 to cache on port 8002
/sbin/ipchains -A input -j REDIRECT 8002 -p tcp -s 0.0.0.0/0 -d 0.0.0.0/0 80

if your using an older version of Redhat which is based on ipfwadm rather
than ipchains, you would do:

# ip forward
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

# Accept all on loopback
/sbin/ipfwadm -I -a accept -W lo
# Accept my own IP, to prevent loops (repeat for each interface/alias)
/sbin/ipfwadm -I -a accept -P tcp -D 172.16.1.163 80
# Send all traffic destinated to port 80 to cache on port 8002
/sbin/ipfwadm -I -a accept -P tcp -D 0/0 80 -r 8002

setting up VLANs servers and clients don't talk but switches can still ping.

Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,

RE: here's a challange....

2000-10-19 Thread Iohan Reyes

The
default route for your default gateway should be the PIX and that should do the
trick.  Otherwise, if you just want port 80 and nothing else, you'll need
to use route-maps.  Personally, I would put the PIX in front of the default
gateway (router) rather than beside it.

Here's one for all you Cisco Mentors out there. I have
recently installed a Catalyst switch 6500 here in the hospital. I have a
direct T1 from my local ISP to this site. My Challange is to:
Route all HTTP traffic from my client p.c's via default gateway
172.16.1.3 (port 80) to my PIX Firewall(linux server/ Red Hat)172.16.1.163 (port
8002) in other words, every p.c. that has internet access will go
directly to default gateway then to the firewall and gain access to the local
isp. I am playing around with access-list / extended access-list
welcome any solutions / resolutions to this problem.

Re: redundancy question

2000-10-19 Thread Brian W.

Lots of questions to ask here, but primarily, the answer is to provide at
least 2 paths to each destination. Spanning tree is somewhat
intelligent in this situation, just set arp timeout according to your
preference. Are there servers, and if so, are you doing multiple nics in
each, or multiple servers.

Re: CCIE Lab - ISDN Simulator

2000-10-19 Thread Rodgers Moore

An Adtran Atlas 550 is alot less expensive and you only loose the ability to
have DS-3 interfaces. But you'll still spend more than installing a couple
of BRI's for 6 months. I doubt you'll find any Atlases on the used market.

Mark,

Maybe I'm missing something, I gather the gateway
and the PIX are not the same box.  So you need a route in the gateway to
the PIX.

AGS+ as frame switch

2000-10-19 Thread Brian

Can the AGS+ run as a frame-switch? I mean does the IOS's that run on it
support frame relay switching? Would make a real nice cheap frame switch
if it did. If it does, then any caveats of using an AGS+ vs. say a 2520
etc?

it is possible that the IOS version of your switch do not have those
mibs

like router the mibs is also IOS base, in version 11, you couldn't get
stat by sub-interface on frame-relay interface, in version 12.0 you can
do it.

so check the version of your cat.

redundancy question

2000-10-19 Thread jason yee

Hi,

Does anyone know how do I go about providing
redundancy in a pure
switched ethernet environment.

The ethernet environment contains different switches
mainly Catalyst
3500 series. I need to propose a redundancy solution
for all the
switches. I am wondering does that mean I need router
to provide
switches redundancy or replacing switches with layer 3
switches (swiches

that routes)

Have you seen the new ones?

They are still triangles but with the addition of the words "Cisco" and
"Certified" at least now they are identifiable.

Before all you seen was CCNA <- like, what's that mean to someone who
doesn't have those initials?

Anyway, I think the new ones are "presentable".

Re: Cisco certification logos on resumes....

2000-10-19 Thread Frank Wells

Hey Lance,
Save your logos for your business cards. Logos on resumes are tacky at best
and will often p-off recruiters because their resume scanning devices spit
them out, forcing them to request a text copy of the resume or having it
faxed over etc. Just make sure your resume has your certs listed in the
appropriate field on the resume.

The last thing you want to do is go into an interview blaring 'I am
certified in this and that'. Go in with the tone of confidence that you can
perform whatever the job description meets, and bring lots of great
additional qualities to the position.

The subject of your certifications will already be known to the interviewer
and will be brought into conversation, at which time you can explain how
your certification experience/level would be most beneficial to the position
blah blah blah.

Use your big guns for the salary negotiation!

Re: figuring out ip on other side of router

2000-10-19 Thread Michael Le

If you have access to the router you could check the
WAN interface and infer from there if it is /30. If
ISP has Cisco router, maybe CDP is enabled and you can
see it that way. Not probable though. You can
traceroute from there too. If you can't access it and
you also have firewall, then I don't know. If you
don't access, maybe there's a reason why you shouldn't
get the ip address. Hehehe.

Access-list and switching

2000-10-19 Thread Deloso, Elmer G (WPNSTA Yorktown)
Title: Access-list and switching

Hi, group.
Is there a way to implement access-list type of security on Catalyst 2924?
I know that to do Layer -3 switching will need at least the 4000 series.
Short of implementing a VLAN, is there a way I can tell the port or switch to allow only certain IP address to go to certain servers connected to a specific

switch in the intranet? I would think that this is possible considering that these
switches are assigned an IP address.
NOTE: the CLSC book actually mentions that "LAN switches may use custom filters to provide access control based on source/destination address, protocol type packet length..."

Please someone tell me what I'm missing.

Sincere thanks to the forum.
Elmer

RE: Summarization

2000-10-19 Thread Brian W.

yes, the correct answer here depends on ypur level of precision
desired. It depends on whether or not you want the 172.16.0.0 to be
included. Many routing protocols auto summarize, sometimes to the
detriment of precision. I personally do not like to include routes in a
summary that are not present, put this is due to my isp experience.

no special part numbers or setup. If you have a 2524 ISDN S/T module then

RE: Route Map was Configuration help.

2000-10-19 Thread Daniel Cotts

Use a route map. This is a newer feature. Check that it will work on your
version of IOS. It is also known as policy based routing.
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/12cgcr/qos_c
/qcpart1/qcpolicy.htm#5351

Create a route map.
router#(config) route-map A permit 10
router#(config) set interface s0/0

Apply it to an interface.
router#(config-if) int fa0/0
router#(config-if) ip policy route-map A
router#(config-if) ip route-cache policy
router#(config-if) exit

I haven't tested this but it should work for your first condition. Create a
similar one for Fa0/1.

Cisco certification logos on resumes....

2000-10-19 Thread Lance Hubbard

Just sifted thru the certification logo usage guidelines The way I
understand it, we are not allowed to use the triangular logos on printed
resumes. Does anyone percieve this otherwise or is the triangle only
allowed on business cards and web sites...?

Cheers,

Lance

RE: Summarization

2000-10-19 Thread Daniel Cotts

Implicit in the concept of summarization is that all possible subnets are
included in the sumarization. A summary of 172.16.0.0/22 would include four
subnets (172.16.0.0, 172.16.1.0, 172.16.2.0, 172.16.3.0). The first 22 bits
of all addresses are the same. Only the last two change. (00, 01, 10, 11).
172.16.1.0/22 is not correct. BTW since summarization works on powers of two
the beginning address will always be an even number.
172.16.0.0/22 works but does not include the first subnet. Geoff's answer
covers only the stated subnets.

Re: Summarization

2000-10-19 Thread Frank Wells

The key is to answer the question. A supernet route refers to a single
route rather than the complete set of aggregate routes. While Geoff is
correct and technically more accurate, the better answer belongs to Thangs
who is also correct.

Ok, I am joining in a little late since the answer to the question is

The rest of your explanation is also not understood.

BGP prefix-list help needed

2000-10-19 Thread Michael Fountain

Hi all. I need some help with a BGP prefix list. A consulting group has
recommended the following prefix list in order to deny learning networks
that should not be learnt from the internet. I don't entirely trust these
guys to know what they are doing, so I would like to see what you all say
about this before I ask them specific questions.

For simplicity, the first part of each line -
 ip prefix-list seq deny
has been left off. All of these lines are deny statements

0.0.0.0/32
0.0.0.0/8 le 32
0.0.0.0/1 ge 20
10.0.0.0/8 le 32
127.0.0.0/8 le 32
128.0.0.0/2 ge 17
128.0.0.0/16 le 32
172.16.0.0/12 le 32
192.0.2.0/24 le 32
192.0.0.0/24 le 32
192.168.0.0/16 le 32
191.255.0.0/16 le 32
192.0.0.0/3 ge 25
223.255.255.0/24 le 32
224.0.0.0/3 le 32

I've tried to work my way through this, and this is what I've got so far:

These I understand:
10.0.0.0/8 le 32= 10.x.x.x (private 10 networks)
127.0.0.0/8 le 32 = 127.x.x.x (127 loopback addresses)
172.16.0.0/12 le 32 = 172.16.x.x-172.31.x.x (private 172 addresses)
192.168.0.0/16 le 32= 192.168.x.x (private 192 addresses)
224.0.0.0/3 le 32 = 224.0.0.0-255.0.0.0 (class D & E addresses)

Are both of these statements necessary?
Doesn't the second one include the first?
0.0.0.0/32 = 0.0.0.0
0.0.0.0/8 le 32 = 0.x.x.x

I think I can understand this, I've heard that anything less then /19 is not
advertised across the internet. But, if that is true, what about the rest
of the networks?
0.0.0.0/1 ge 20 = 0.x.x.x thru 127.x.x.x, with mask /20 or more

Do these have somehthing to do with the above statement?
128.0.0.0/2 ge 17 = 128.x.x.x-191.x.x.x, with mask /17 or more
192.0.0.0/3 ge 25 = 192.x.x.x-223.x.x.x, with mask /25 or more

What the heck are these addresses?
128.0.0.0/16 le 32 = 128.0.x.x
192.0.2.0/24 le 32 = 192.0.2.x
192.0.0.0/24 le 32 = 192.0.0.x
191.255.0.0/16 le 32= 191.255.x.x
223.255.255.0/24 le 32 = 223.255.255.x

Any help would be appreciated

RE: CCIE Lab

2000-10-19 Thread Louie Belt

While I have not been through the lab yet (I face that challenge in 10 days)
I have read and learned enough about it to know what some of the general
challenges are.

What can be said about the CCIE lab is very limited due to a strictly
enforced non disclosure agreement. However, what can be said is that
anything that a Cisco Router or Switch can do is fair game on the CCIE lab.
The lab consists of a series of instructions and each section is worth a
number of points. In order to receive those points your configuration must
be 100% correct. Cisco's policy on this is 99% right = 100% wrong.

The Cisco CCIE blueprint lists the equipment you will see in the lab.
Currently the PIX is not part of that equipment and therefore is not on the
lab. However every capability of that equipment is a possibility, so you
had better know DECnet, IPX, IP Appletalk, LAT, IS-IS, ... You had better
know Token Ring, IRB, CRB, RSRB, DLSW+, Frame, ATM, ISDN, Voice,... VPNs,
access-lists(yes even for DECnet, NetBIOS and MAC addresses),
access-expressions, route-maps, queuing, ... you name it will all be seen
(Don't forget about NTP).

Also keep in mind that you will not be asked to perform tasks in the usual
manner. If there is an alternative method to accomplish a task, you could
be strictly limited to it - they could explicitly forbid the primary method.
An example (not from the CCIE lab) would be: Configure Frame-Relay
point-to-multi on Serial 0/0.2 of RouterA, connect to the physical Serial
0/0 interfaces of RouterB, RouterC & RouterD. Without using ANY Frame-Relay
Map statements and only 1 IP OSPF network statement, configure routing
between all of the routers so that RouterB can ping any interface on any of
the other routers. (your frame switch is not fully meshed, it's spoke and
hub)

Hope this gives you a general idea of what to expect.

LAB

Subject: CCIE Lab

Hi All,

I would like more information on the CCIE lab (R&S). If anyone has
attempted/completed the lab, can you please tell me more about the two day
experience. How much detail do they ask you to configure on the network?
How do they evaluated what you have done/created on the first day and fixed
on the second day? Do they include DECnet, IPX, IP, and AppleTalk? Will
they add a PIX firewall, CiscoSecure or any other Cisco software running on
a server to the equation ?

If anyone is looking for a (almost)CCIE in the US please take a look at my

Re: CCIE Lab - ISDN Simulator

2000-10-19 Thread Brian

Personally, the simulators seem too expensive. For example, you *might*
be able to get one for like $1500.00. Well to get an ISDN line at your
house is probably only about $200.00 install and maybe $70-$80 a month.

You only need 1 ISDN line. It has 2 channels. You just use an external
NT1 and S/T interfaces on your routers, and you can place calls between
the two. Is cheaper imho.

Question regarding IPSEC and PIX

2000-10-19 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

I have been looking for information regarding order of operations within a
PIX (5.1(2) code) when terminating an IPSEC tunnel and then filtering and
natting the untunneled packets. I have to assume that it goes something
like this:
Tunneled packet enters the outside interface and is unpacked
The new packet with its different properties is then handled as
mandated by the rule set
I have had little luck finding anything on CCO that spells this out in
detail and in a linear manner particularly the filtering and natting
processes. Any help will be appreciated greatly!
Thanks in advance,

Nathan Miller

Many thanks.

Re: figuring out ip on other side of router

2000-10-19 Thread Ejay Hire

Go to www.samspade.org, and use the web interface to traceroute to your ip.
Assuming you firewall eats ICMP echo messages, your router will be the last
ip before the trace vaporizes. Your ISP's router will be the one before
that.

I'm not sure if it's possible on a Cisco Catalyst, but I have configured it
and had it working on a FORE Systems PowerHub 7000. In theory, it should
work on the Catalyst too.
