Re: Cisco 2524 Vs AGS+
The AGS is perfect for in Frame-Switch role. For the money, you can't beat it. If you ever get a chance to check out CCIE Bootcamps, they use this router in their dial-in lab racks. 10.0 & up supports DLSW, Frame-Relay Switching, & X.25. This router is best is a lab setting, when used as a Telco cloud. If you have any further questions, contact me offline. I don't fuss with AGS's much anymore, but configuring & building them is how I got into the business... Al Gore thought up the 53-byte cell after he invented the Internet :-) Honestly- the best ATM books I've read (that were readable & not a bunch of algorithms) were Global Knowledge's beginner series. They explain international agreements between cell sizes, echo, QOS, etc., etc.,. The best ATM working explanation I've ever read, is Chapter 7 in the CCNA WAN Quick Start book (& I usually don't like Cisco Press :-) Good Luck !!! I just passed the CCDA exam this morning. As said so many times before, ambiguous questions made this a somewhat difficult test. On the other hand, the technical content was fairly basic, so being a CCNP before taking this one certainly helped. Overall, common sense, experience, and previous studies made the difference for me. Top Down Network Design is a fantastic book (thanks Priscilla!) and highly recommended. I had 4 case studies, 72 questions, and 2 hours. Re: Why 53-bytes for a cell & AL GORE
Hi All, There were several different reasons for choosing such smaller size of payload carrier some of them as follows : Why such a small-sized packet for ATM? Why not larger than 48 bytes in the payload (48 bytes is very, very small)? The answer to that is simple. ATM and the inventors of ATM targeted the single challenge-to reduce delay in the network. If we have large packets they take a long time to assemble. For instance, we know that a DS0, Plain Old Telephony service is running at 64,000 bits per second. If you take that 64,000 bits per second and divide it by 8000, which is an 1/8000 of a second, you end up with 8 bits every 1/8000 of a second. That's very repeatable; its going to be the same in any country. If we know we're getting 8 bits, or 1 byte every 1/8000 of a second, we know that filling up a packet is going to take a measurable amount of time (1 byte every 125 microseconds). If we make the packet long, it's going to take a long time to fill it up. This is called cell assembly delay. In order to maintain delay constraints that were targeted towards ATM, they decided to make these packets very, very small. It would have been better for file transfer for data application to have a longer packet, but they erred on the side of voice-to maintain a Quality of Service for voice in a packet network, similar to today's TDM networks. That's why it was so small. It's all about that cell assembly delay. Voice and video applications are sensitive to delay, especially when it's interactive. When you're talking to someone on the phone, and they're talking back at you, this is where delay becomes very important. We have a test that we often do for this kind of thing: if I were to say "one," and then you were to say "two," and I were to say "three," and we were to go back and forth as quickly as possible, we would be able to understand exactly how much delay exists in this interactive conversation. It's a great test for delay. For non-interactive, for instance, when I'm just speaking to you, and there's no real interaction with me, delay isn't as important. Perhaps we could have gotten away with longer packets for this type of application. ATM elected to default to the best performance for interactive voice. hope this helps everyone... regards rahul. © 1984-2000 TRA. 300/1000 scale (correct me if I'm wrong butt...)
Hey Group, I always wondered when taking my tests what they meant when they said that there would be a 300/1000 scale. Then somebody on the list explained that you start out with 300 points automatically. This is nice. I just tried to figure out how many could be gotten wrong on the BSCN and came up with something that I don't believe. Follow me on this one... 61 questions, 690/1000 to pass. You start out with 300 so there is basically 700 points for a perfect score with 61 questions. Now, 700 points divided by 61 questions breaks out to something like 11.48 points per question. Then I take 1000 - 690 and get 310 points. This is how many you can miss and still pass. Finally, I divide that 310 points you can miss, by the number of points per question (310/11.48) and get this as the number of questions you can miss and still pass...27.003 (27 basically). I may be seeing it wrong in the area where I divide the 700/61 to get the number of points per question. It may be that even though you get 300, you still divide 1000/61, which would give you 16.39 points per question which in the end would allow you to miss 18.9 (18 basically) questions. This sounds alot more like it. This confuses me. If my initial calculation is the correct one, what this shows me is that on a test that has only 61 questions, somebody can get 27 (almost half) of them wrong and still pass the test. Does this just sound too easy to anybody else? Am I not understanding that 300/1000 scale thing, or is this test just soo damn easy? Don't get me wrong, I never go for the bare minimum. In fact, I don't believe anything under 800 is satisfactory (B basically), I just like to know all factors before a test. Thanks for responses guys/ladies... Re: CAT 5000 can't set system name
that's because the command "set system name" is for the SNMP variable and not the prompt. if you want to see that name as a prompt then use the command: set prompt switch will do it. If you give the command "show system" you'll see what you're changing with the "set system name" command. Kevin Wigle CCDP/CCNP - Original Message - From: "Steven V. TCP/IP Sliding windows measurement
Someone on this post wanted to know if Sliding window size can actually be monitored. The reply is yes , it can be . I used Ether peek to do the same. Start the Ether peek capture. Stop capture.Double click on any one entry of the packet table.Under TCP, look for " window" . This is the window size and it will vary as the tx-rx between a sending station and receiving station takes place. I am attaching one sniffed packet showing the same. I was trying to troubleshoot a cookie server when I ran into this. Kumar ___ Visit http://www.visto.com/info, your free web-based communications center. Visto.com. Strange Encryption Problem
All, We have a PRI line running CET encryption between two 7206s both have 11.2 version. The strange thing we found out is that we put the 'crypto map xxx" under the pri interface, we started a extended ping, everything was okay, after 3 or 4 mins, the it started loosing pakets, then the ping could not make at all.(but sometimes, we could get one pakets out of 100 pings) Without encryption, everyting is okay. When this happens, the CPU utilization of both the routers are just about 2%. The production crypto access-list is a huge one, I created a testing one just has one access-list, and put it under the pri, everyting was okay with this one, but as soon as we put the production encryption on, the strange thing happens. I was told that this configuration was working for a while and then all a sudden it just has this problem. We opened a case with TAC, have not got any response yet. Any suggestion will be appreciated. Jack _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The 2924XL. like all Cisco switches, employs store and forward switching. There are good reasons for this and I know of no way of changing. Re: 2511 access server configuration help
Steven, I'm assuming you're using a 2511RJ series. If that's the case, then you're lucky. Just plug a straight-through cat5 cable from the 16 async ports on the 2511 to your routers or switches console port. Then on your 2511, setup a loopback interface, giving it an ip like 1.1.1.1/32. So for example if your switch's console port is attached to the first port on your 2511, you can access the console of your switch from the 2511 by typing "telnet 1.1.1.1 2001". If you have multiple sessions, you can switch screens by breaking out "Control-Shift-F6 x" and then type another session number to get into that session. If you still have problems, feel free to call me up during business hours.. I can walk you through. :-) Cheers, Frank Kim, MCSE, CCNA Comegetus Technologies Phone: 858-831-0296 Fax: 858-831-0687 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.comegetus.com Cisco Training in San Diego On Sat, 21 Oct 2000, Steven V.
