RE: HSRP question

2000-11-22 Thread Taiwo Adeshugba

Here is the official answer:
The standby router automatically assumes the role when the active router
fails or is removed from service. This new active router remains the
forwarding router even when the former active router with the higher
priority regains the service in the network.
The former active router can be configured to resume the forwarding router
role from a router with a lower priority. To make the router resume the
forwarding role, you must enter the PREEMPT COMMAND this will make the
former router assume its previous role. I hope this make sense.

Re: Load-Balancing of two serial via same ISP

2000-11-22 Thread Shahir Boshra

Mostly right, except the following:
* The router will have 2 default routes and will load-balance between the
connections regardless any difference in bandwidth, delay, etc.. Default
route is a special case of static route after all.
* For the inbound traffic, most probably the ISP will also add a new static
entry for the new path, hence load-balance between 2 links, BGP is not
recommended in this case, where the 2 links are connected to the same ISP.

I'm sure the guys on the list will correct me if I am wrong, but if you
have
2 serial connections on the same router, with the router having 2 default
routes (0.0.0.0/0), then it will load-balance between the connections,
provided the serial links are identical (bandwidth, delay, etc...) this
scenario of process-switching takes to most CPU utilization, so keep that
in
mind... This will also only work for outbound connectivity... inbound
load-balancing requires the use of an EGP, like BGP4...

 Hi! Everyone...
I have something to ask you guys... If you have any information for this,
please don't hesitate to reply to me.

I'm using the 2M Internet circuit via ISP, but I'm gonna add extra 2M
 circuit via same ISP.
As you know well, we're subject to ISP config. ISP made "STATIC" config
for
their customer, customer is only to
config "Default route". Consequently, I wanna use this two serial-line at
 same time in "LOAD-BALANCING"
So, I wonder even though I make config for default route with new IP
Address
 whether no problem in LOAD-
 BALANCING or not.

If you have another good knowledge, could you reply to me ?

Is there any specific ODIs available for the same?

If any one can help me to find how to integrate the ODIs with MRTG or send me

Catalyst 2924XL Config question

2000-11-22 Thread John Neiberger

Is there a way to configure a group of switch ports at the same time if they
are all changing in the same way? For instance, let's say that port 1-20
are to be set to 100/Full and to VLAN2. Repeating the same config lines 20
times is annoying. it would be nice if we could specify a range of ports to
apply config changes to.

It even appears that they may have a way to do this, but I haven't figured
out the syntax. If you type "int fa0/0?" it leads me down a path to
frustration. It appears as if it's going to let me set a range, but it
doesn't act how I assume it's going to.

Do any of you know if there is a way to do this?

TIA,
John

c d,

because EtherChannel improves both performance and availability. It gives
additional bandwidth, by bandling up to 4 (2x or 4x) continuous for
"simple" switches,
or up to 8x non-coninuous on Catalyst 6000 both FEC or GEC interfaces,

2000-11-22 Thread xndr

Hi!

X.25 is a set of CCITT recomendations for transmitting dato over PDNs
protocol suit, including OSI Layers: Physical, Datalink Network.

The speed is on Physical Layer. At the physical layer, the X.25 standard
assumes an X.21 interface, but can also support V.35 and the EIA RS232-D
interfaces.

X.21 bis is up to 19,2 Kbps, V.35 is up to 2Mbps, and RS232 is up about
115,200 or something like this.

I have a question about x.25 transmit rate as following:
What is the maximum transmission rate for X.25?

 A. 56 Kbps
 B. 64 Kbps
 C. 128 Kbps
 D. 1.544 Mbps

RE: Fast EtherChannel question

2000-11-22 Thread Tomaz Klemencic

Strictly speaking load balancing is not feature of fast etherchannel. Fast
etherchannel can only perform load sharing of traffic between bundled links.
It looks at last bit (or last two bits on four port bundle) of mac
addresses, performs xor and uses one link for entire traffic flow between
that source and destination.

RE: Trunking--

2000-11-22 Thread Taiwo Adeshugba

Stuart,
There is a possibility that all links to a router can be a trunk but why do
you want to do that?. You would only need a trunk link to a switch if you
have multiple vlans and are using the router to route traffic between them.
A link would not be a trunk if is an access port in which the port belongs
to only one vlan. The port can't receive information form other vlan's
unless the information has been routed.
Secondly an Hybrid link is where the link is both a Trunk and Access link.
These carry both frames, with Tagged frames for Vlan information and
untagged frames without vlan information. Therefore it will receive both
Tagged and untagged frames.
To answer the third question. There is nothing much to consider except the
fact that to configure HSRP over an ISL link between vlans do the following
1. Define the encapsulation format which in your case will be ISL
2.Define the IP address and enable HSRP. However remember that you are
configuring this on the sub interfaces not the primary interface
i.e.
Interface fast Ethernet 1/1 .20
encapsulation isl 20.
The 20 in the first command is for the sub interface 20.
I hope this helps and is not misleading.

 Yes!!!
Compared to Routing and Switching i found this exam fairly easy. There
were like 20 choose-IOS-command-from-list questions. The
 following subjects were covered:
 - Frame Relay
 - X25
 - AAA/Security
 - ISDN
 - Dialup, Modem Config
 - Router and Connection Deployment
 - PPP
 - NAT

I took the Boson #1 and COLT test and read the Ciscopress BCRAN book by
Paquet (except for the chapter dealing with the 700's). The
list, off course, is also a great resource.

Re: Catalyst 2924XL Config question

2000-11-22 Thread Nigel Taylor

John,
On way would be to use CWSI. Another would be to use the web based
java management tool found on CCO to manage all you switches. Now the
switch can be a standalone or member(s) of a VTP domain, the latter giving
you the ability to manage all of your switches from the Master/management
switch you will have defined...

Subject: Catalyst 2924XL Config question

Is there a way to configure a group of switch ports at the same time if
they
are all changing in the same way? For instance, let's say that port 1-20
are to be set to 100/Full and to VLAN2. Repeating the same config lines
20
times is annoying. it would be nice if we could specify a range of ports
to
 apply config changes to.

 TIA,
 John

Re: CCIE Written Passed!

2000-11-22 Thread Stevan Pierce

Tim,

I have been advised that the CID 3.0 exam is a really good starting point
for passing the CCIE written. If so, what would you advise brushing up on
for the written, without violating the nda?

I passed my CCIE written exam today. It was a very frustrating exam. After
I
failed it the first time, I purchased the Boson CCIE practice Test. Boson
had helped me before to prepare and pass CID and complete my CCDP track.

If not for these, I might be re-taking this exam until this time next
year.
It was the best investment I ever made. The good thing about it is that,
it
is more like a tutor than a practice test. It clarified lots of areas that
I
 had problems with.

My other advice: go to http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/CCIE
It is the blueprint of the things that you should know. Cisco is not
kidding. You must know whatever is mentioned here.

Sorry, I can't provide more info (NDA), but study hard because the test
content is broad, test questions ambiguous.

RE: corp. restrictions workaround?

2000-11-22 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Typical layer 8 problem..

The department managers should be discussing this through their regular
channels, working on changing policy. Instead they are asking you to "fix"
something, hoping you will.

Tell me something. If you were to circumvent company policy, were
discovered, and fired, would those who involved you care?

On the other hand, there may be things you can do to optimize traffic flow,
and that in turn might improve internet performance. So you may want to look
at this as an exercise in network optimization, rather that an exercise in
layer 8 politics.

Best wishes

Chuck

Re: Asigning ip addresses

2000-11-22 Thread A. Geoffrey Cauchi

Different ports must be on different IP Addresses, which also implies
different subnet masks. For example, you could use

IP Address 207.102.99.125 Subnet 255.255.255.252 for their Serial
IP Address 207.102.99.126 Subnet 255.255.255.252 for distant-end Serial

IP Address 207.102.99.133 Subnet 255.255.255.192 for Ethernet
IP Address 207.102.99.134 Subnet 255.255.255.192 for host

The other way around this would be to use IP unnumbered ethernet 0 for your
serial interface

#1: The course "ACRC" is now retired, and the exam is no longer available.
The new course / exam is : BSCN (Building Scalable Cisco Networks) and the
exam is called Routing 2.0. This is your first step usually into CCNP/CCDP
after CCNA/CCDA.

#2: Whether you want to gain Design-based certifications is up to you.. what
kind of work do you do/want to do? Are you helping design / engineer /
provision / upgrade internetworking gear? Then by all means, take the
Design. I am finding that working for a Systems Integrator, that design
opportunities are coming my way quite often. I have studied for this exam,
just simply have not written the exam to get the paper. I have talked to my
employer about possible benefits regarding this cert, and they seem very
interested in me continuing my road to Cisco-dom.. as I am the only employee
out of 6 technical datacom workers, and 200+ employees (mostly telecom and
wireless cellular tower engineers) to be certified from Cisco.

The final answer is, "IT DEPENDS". Depends on what you want for yourself,

All five suborgs want to get around these restrictions but still have

Building is fitted out with Cisco Switches

any recommendations, proposals?

 A. 56 Kbps
 B. 64 Kbps
 C. 128 Kbps
 D. 1.544 Mbps

Passed CCDA, recommendations for BSCN ?

2000-11-22 Thread Bharat Suneja

Hi All,

I cleared the CCDA on Monday with a 912. Not too disappointed with the
score - I didn't study as much as I did for the CCNA.

I found the test wasn't as poorly worded as the CCNA. Had about 4 case
studies, but it seemed like every second question was a case study question.

I used Designing Cisco Networks (Cisco Press) and CCDA Exam Certification
Guide (Cisco Press), a little bit of Top Down Network Design (Cisco Press) -
not as exam-oriented as the former two books but a pretty good read
nevertheless.

On to CCNP next! I intend to take the BSCN course, probably from Global
Knowledge.

Any ideas on what to study for BSCN and recommendations for a home lab ?

Re: Asigning ip addresses

2000-11-22 Thread Kevin Wigle

it is a routing problem mostly,

Cisco will not let you put two interfaces into the same network.

Consider any routing process.

Normally you add a network with the command: network a.b.c.d (and more if
OSPF)

Say you were allowed to have 2 interfaces in a.b.c.d, a packet comes in for
that network - which interface does it go to?

How would you tell a packet from Int A to go to Int B in the same subnet? A
local host would consider that since the destination is in the same subnet
that it is local and it wouldn't even leave the segment. It
wouldn't go the gateway.

The "way" around this is to use different subnets for the wan and lan
portions of the network.

Hope this helps.

Access list help

2000-11-22 Thread Timothy Metz

All,

For some reason I am having problems with a seemingly simple access-list and
any help is extremely appreciated. When I applied the list, It blocked www
access (intranet www worked fine) to all except the BDC and the Exchange
server. I assume I made a mistake with the wildcard mask.

My stub of the intranet is 10.105.190.0
BDC is 10.105.190.10
Exchange server is 10.105.190.246
IP's authorized unrestricted access 10.105.190.8 thru 10.105.190.24
LAN is on e0, WAN on s0

Here are my guidelines in plain English
permit all to local intranet
permit our BDC to all
permit Exchange server to all
permit specific block of ip's to all (10.105.190.8 thru 10.105.190.24)
deny all others to www
permit ip all (for proprietary stuff some of our offices use and I don't
currently have the time to see what ports they need)

Here is the list I came up with:

access-list 101 permit tcp any 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 eq www
access-list 101 permit ip host 10.105.190.10 any
access-list 101 permit ip host 10.105.190.246 any
access-list 101 permit ip 10.105.190.8 0.0.0.16 any
access-list 101 deny tcp 10.105.190.0 0.0.0.255 any eq www
access-list 101 permit ip any any

apply to interface e0:

en, config t, int e0
ip access-group 101 out
ctrl-z

Thanks again,

Tim

The correct answer is C.

TACACS should usually be setup so that if TACACS is unavailable to the
device that the local password can be used. If you do not know the local
info then you will need to do a break as the router boots to get into rommon
and set the configuration register so the router does not load the startup

2000-11-22 Thread Evan You

Hi all,

I have a Cisco 805 router do router ISDN in my home. Having problem with it.

The SPID auto-detect detected the SPID and Switch type properly, but I still

I have both editions but haven't had time to read the new one. I found it
mismarked or what I think was mismarked at borders for 30% off. There were 5
there and all marked the same so I grabbed one, even though it is a few
titles down on my list. I did read the 1st edition and want to know the
differences. Duck

Re: How much GRE tunnel can supported on Cisco routers

2000-11-22 Thread Marc Giroux

We also need to know what processord you will use the 100 , 200 or 300.
What interfaces. The problem lies on the processing power needed to do this. If you
split
the GRE on multiple Interfaces all running CEF there will be less load on the processor
and therefore more tunnels will you be able to have. What else will you be running on
this
box ACL's and other commands utilize alot of processor. What type of cost are you
looking
at also do you want a 7200 or is the 3600 the max you are willing to pay for a router?

In the Second password prompt, enter the enable secret password and it
should let you in. If this is not the case, than simply do a password

So take your failure with a little grain of salt. Poor CID performance

Re: BSCN

2000-11-22 Thread David Armstrong

CIR is the Committed Information Rate which is determined by the Frame Relay
vendor. It is the rate they guarantee that they will move your data through
their Frame Relay network. Each PVC (DLCI to DLCI connection) can have a
different CIR.

From your example (I'm assuming that you are giving Port Access speeds) it
appears that there is a central router with a 128k Port Access and 2 branch
routers with 64k Port Access. The Port Access is the bandwidth/speed that
the router connects to the Frame Relay network. Data can possibly be moved
at Port Access speed through bursting above the CIR even though the Frame
Relay provider only guarantees the CIR.

From the information you gave the CIR isn't known; however, neither PVC can
move data beyond their Port Access speed which in your example is 64k.

Router(config-if)#no dialer callback-secure

This command ensures that the initial call is always disconnected at the
receiving end and the return call is made only if the username is configured
for callback. If the username (hostname in the dialer map command) is not
configured for callback, the initial call stays up and no return call is
made.

So if you want to accept callback clients as well as non-callback clients,
you will need to disable callback security

Re: IOS firewall SMTP question

It may function the same as a PIX with mailguard, in the sense that only
certain SMTP commands are allowed to pass...just the required 6 or
7 commands like RCPT To, MAIL From, DATA, etc. Perhaps the MTA that
connected sent like "vrfy" or "expn" or even "ehlo" and it doesn't want to
pass that so flags it as invalidmail would still work as expn,
vrfy, ehlo, helo, etc are all just optional commands.

I agree. Once you get the hang of it, subnetting is
pretty easy. The way to get the hang of it is, of course, practice, practice,
practice. My point was that, if you have trouble with the theory behind basic
subnetting, VLSM and summarization are going to be hard because they build upon
that theory.
